Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / American fighter jet shot down over Iran, search for crew member continues
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We're following reports that a US Fighter JED was shot
- 0:03Speaker 1: down in Iran, and that would make it the first
- 0:06Speaker 1: since the war began nearly five weeks ago. Iranian state
- 0:10Speaker 1: media has broadcast these images, which it says is the
- 0:13Speaker 1: wreckage of the aircraft. It comes just days after US
- 0:17Speaker 1: President Donald Trump said in a national address that the
- 0:20Speaker 1: US has beaten and completely decimated Iran and was going
- 0:25Speaker 1: to finish the job, and we're going to finish it
- 0:29Speaker 1: very fast. CBC Senior International correspondent Sasha Pettersik is tracking
- 0:33Speaker 1: developments from Jerusalem. Sasha, what more do we know about
- 0:37Speaker 1: this down to US aircraft?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Well, Sarah, as it turns out it's not aircraft one.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's actually it turns out that there's two that have
- 0:48Speaker 2: gone down earlier today. This started with news that an
- 0:54Speaker 2: F fifteen E fighter had been shot down by the Iranians,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and that set off race really to try to find
- 1:05Speaker 2: the two crew members who had ejected and were presumably
- 1:10Speaker 2: somewhere underneath somewhere in Iran, Southern Iran. The Americans almost
- 1:17Speaker 2: immediately had sent out their helicopters and other planes drones
- 1:22Speaker 2: as well, to try to find them. They did rescue
- 1:26Speaker 2: one of the two crew members within a few hours actually,
- 1:30Speaker 2: but the second one is still missing. Then we heard
- 1:33Speaker 2: a little bit later that among the aircraft that had
- 1:37Speaker 2: been sent out to try to find these crew members,
- 1:42Speaker 2: one was shot at and eventually shot down. This was
- 1:47Speaker 2: a Warthog attack plane which was shot down somewhere in
- 1:53Speaker 2: the area of the Strait of Hormuz, not too far
- 1:56Speaker 2: away from where this one where the first one went down.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We found out that two other helicopters, Blackhawk helicopters, had
- 2:04Speaker 2: also been shot at. Both of those managed to make
- 2:08Speaker 2: their way back to their bases and everybody on board
- 2:13Speaker 2: was safe. But it's really turned out to be a
- 2:16Speaker 2: very bad day for the US and for this military effort.
- 2:22Speaker 2: As you say, it's the first time that an aircraft
- 2:24Speaker 2: has been shot down by Iran, but really it's much
- 2:29Speaker 2: more complicated than that, and the political fallout for the
- 2:33Speaker 2: administration for US President Donald Trump could well be serious.
- 2:38Speaker 2: We're starting to get a little hint of that already today.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Here's a democratic representative and what he had to say.
- 2:46Speaker 3: We were told just a couple of nights ago, in
- 2:49Speaker 3: the President's twenty minute address to the country that we
- 2:53Speaker 3: owned the skies of Iran, and it looks like we
- 2:57Speaker 3: don't if this is happening. And this is the concern
- 3:01Speaker 3: with this conflict is that we have a president who
- 3:04Speaker 3: is completely unprepared for what's next, has no justification as
- 3:08Speaker 3: to why we are there, seems to have more plans
- 3:11Speaker 3: for a ballroom in the East wing of the White
- 3:15Speaker 3: House than a conflict in the Middle East as it
- 3:19Speaker 3: plays out right now.
- 3:23Speaker 2: So this is really turning into a bit of a
- 3:27Speaker 2: challenge for the administration, for the military as well, especially
- 3:33Speaker 2: since the message was that the US had everything under
- 3:38Speaker 2: control in Iran was effectively beaten militarily. If that turns
- 3:43Speaker 2: out not to be the case here and really Iran,
- 3:47Speaker 2: really all they have to do is to stay alive,
- 3:50Speaker 2: to stay effectively not be defeated, and that is what
- 3:56Speaker 2: they've considered their.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Bar well, and Sasha around continues to target oil and
- 4:03Speaker 1: energy infrastructure in the Gulf States as it's maintaining a
- 4:07Speaker 1: virtual blockade and the critical strait of Hormos. What's the
- 4:10Speaker 1: latest on that front.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. This is really turning into a real
- 4:19Speaker 2: challenge for the Gulf States on a couple of different levels.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Today we saw Kuwait facing not only attacks on a refinery,
- 4:30Speaker 2: but also attacks on its desalination plant, which is a
- 4:34Speaker 2: civilian thing and is very critical for drinking water in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the Gulf State. We've also seen a couple of other
- 4:42Speaker 2: gas plants over the past few days being hit in
- 4:45Speaker 2: the UAE and also in cutter and we've heard that
- 4:50Speaker 2: those won't be back up to full operation for three
- 4:55Speaker 2: to five years. That could be a big problem not
- 4:58Speaker 2: only for those states, but for the customers that need
- 5:01Speaker 2: the gas. So it's a big problem.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Thanks Sasha that CBC Senior International correspondent Sascha Petritick and
