- 0:20Speaker 1: We have a lot to get to today. There's a
- 0:21Speaker 1: World Baseball Classic Championship game tonight, March is here, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: there's been a trade in the NFL. A lot of
- 0:32Speaker 1: things to get to.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Is he March has been here for seventeen days?
- 0:35Speaker 4: All right?
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but it doesn't Mark really doesn't start until this Thursday.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Happy Saint Patrick's Day.
- 0:41Speaker 1: To you the same to you? A thing to be uh.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I could walk in here on Hanukkah and you would
- 0:47Speaker 1: not say, hey, happy honoga.
- 0:48Speaker 5: Yeah you know, I'm just a little annoyed that I
- 0:50Speaker 5: forgot about it.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And I'm wearing a bunch of gray yes and no green.
- 0:55Speaker 1: So I got it. We'll get to waddle in just
- 0:58Speaker 1: a second here. Mark shlayriffs stink is going to join
- 1:01Speaker 1: us at about fifteen minutes. What's his name, Mark Schlayrith Ok,
- 1:07Speaker 1: not bad, right, It's a tough one for me. Not good,
- 1:11Speaker 1: not bad stink. That's why I call him stink. Yeah,
- 1:14Speaker 1: not Slareth. Speedy Claxton is going to join us. He
- 1:20Speaker 1: is the head coach at Hofstra University. They take on Alabama.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I like Houge. I'm telling you right now, I like
- 1:25Speaker 1: this team out of the I believe they're in the
- 1:28Speaker 1: South bracket, maybe the Midwest, but I like this team
- 1:31Speaker 1: to advance the second weekend of the NC DOUBLEA Tournament.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'm not certain they're going to a final four. They
- 1:37Speaker 1: are in the Midwest, and I'm not certain they're going
- 1:40Speaker 1: to the final four, but I do like them to.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Advance to at least the sweet sixteen. Who's their first
- 1:45Speaker 3: round opponent?
- 1:45Speaker 1: I have no Alabama? Alabama?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Wow, how about that. I have no idea though Alabama.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I only know that because there's a kid suspended on
- 1:53Speaker 1: the Alabama team. And that's why I like Speedy Claxton
- 1:56Speaker 1: to advance to the second weekend of the NC DOUBLEA Tournament.
- 2:00Speaker 6: Yes, Taylor Andzy. Once you get past that first round,
- 2:02Speaker 6: it's kind of all bets are off. You become the
- 2:04Speaker 6: new four seed.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Theoretically, Yes, yeah, true, absolutely, yes, it resets. That's what
- 2:10Speaker 1: March is all about Ryan Howard is going to join
- 2:13Speaker 1: us in the four o'clock hour as well. Former nlmv
- 2:16Speaker 1: P Able talks of World Baseball Classic with him. Okay,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Taylor says that the World Baseball Classic wasn't prepared for
- 2:24Speaker 1: Italy to be in a Miami semi final. Before I
- 2:28Speaker 1: get to Wattle, Taylor, please explain yourself.
- 2:31Speaker 6: So I get to the game yesterday, I go into
- 2:34Speaker 6: the team store because now I'm fired up. I'm like,
- 2:37Speaker 6: let's go, let's get a Vinnie Pasquatino Jersey.
- 2:39Speaker 5: All right, let back up a little bit, Taylor. Vinpillis
- 2:42Speaker 5: famously Italian. Yes, we didn't even know this until two
- 2:45Speaker 5: weeks ago. Right, and down here in South Florida, we
- 2:48Speaker 5: had You went to a previous game, right, it wasn't
- 2:50Speaker 5: This wasn't your first World Baseball Classic game.
- 2:52Speaker 6: No, this is my third or fourth game, and this
- 2:54Speaker 6: was not a date night.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Christ's just Taylor going.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Okay, yep, great, wow solo huh with the boys? What boys?
- 3:04Speaker 6: I mean my room ad Ian, my friend Alex there,
- 3:08Speaker 6: you know. Yes, Okay, So I get to the game
- 3:11Speaker 6: and I get to the team store, and is he
- 3:13Speaker 6: in the previous games I've been to? They never had
- 3:16Speaker 6: any Italian gear. So when I'm going to the game
- 3:19Speaker 6: at lone Depot Park, I'm like, okay, now they have
- 3:22Speaker 6: to have Italy gear in this team store. You get
- 3:25Speaker 6: to the team's store, every Venezuela players jersey was available
- 3:30Speaker 6: for purchase. I could have bought a jersey of Venezuela's
- 3:33Speaker 6: backup catcher from twelve years ago. Wow, not a single
- 3:37Speaker 6: not a single team.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Italy jersey, No passquatch, merch, nothing jerseys.
- 3:43Speaker 5: They had jerseys, always overpriced and never good enough.
- 3:47Speaker 6: Yeah, it was sixty five dollars for a get out of.
- 3:49Speaker 5: And then was there a music situation where they're not
- 3:51Speaker 5: giving you the proper Italian music options?
- 3:55Speaker 6: So they played one Italian song the entire game.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Was it? Wow?
- 4:01Speaker 6: I believe it was something Andrea Boceelli so cliche one yesh.
- 4:06Speaker 6: They played that one song in the eighth inning isy.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Every other song was a Hispanic song, and I have
- 4:12Speaker 6: no problem with Hispanic music. The crowd was eighty five
- 4:15Speaker 6: percent ninety five percent probably Venezuela, right, but give us,
- 4:20Speaker 6: give us a break. They took our crowd completely out
- 4:23Speaker 6: of that. When you say our crowd, what did you?
- 4:25Speaker 3: You said? It was ninety five percent Venezuela.
- 4:27Speaker 5: If it was a home game, you still might get
- 4:30Speaker 5: five percent Italians.
- 4:31Speaker 1: It's okay in Venezuela. So how was this different than
- 4:34Speaker 1: it seems a home game. It seems like it was
- 4:36Speaker 1: their crowd.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, but the Italians needed something to get juiced
- 4:41Speaker 6: up about. We already were juiced up that they moved
- 4:43Speaker 6: Aaron Nola up from the championship game to the semifinal game,
- 4:48Speaker 6: and then when Lorenz came in, it was kind of
- 4:50Speaker 6: like we're pushing all our chips in just to get
- 4:52Speaker 6: to the final, because Izy, those were the only two
- 4:55Speaker 6: starters the Italian team really had, and even if they
- 4:58Speaker 6: got to the USA game, we were probably Mario or
- 5:00Speaker 6: Luigi at that point.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Aaron Nola, of course from Baton Rouge. It's in
- 5:05Speaker 1: his last name. It's not Aaron Italy, it's Aaron New Orleans.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Perhaps all the Italy players were on USA jerseys. Did
- 5:13Speaker 1: you really examine the merchandise store or no.
- 5:16Speaker 6: And they had the Judge jerseys, they had the cal
- 5:18Speaker 6: Rawly jerseys. I didn't see any Jacob Marcy jerseys.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm pretty sure when they were thinking about this,
- 5:24Speaker 5: they were like all right, even if Italy makes it
- 5:27Speaker 5: to the semi final here, what percentage of South Floridians
- 5:31Speaker 5: are really going to be cheering for Italy?
- 5:33Speaker 6: So the only thing I was able to buy there
- 5:35Speaker 6: for the audio audience, I'm wearing an Italian baseball hat.
- 5:39Speaker 6: And this is further proof that I know that they
- 5:42Speaker 6: were not prepared because I bought this hat. At the game,
- 5:45Speaker 6: every team there that was represented had flags on their
- 5:49Speaker 6: hat of their country. Italy is the only one that didn't,
- 5:52Speaker 6: so I don't even know where they got the eyes.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yes, is their hat red white and blue, red white
- 5:58Speaker 1: and green? It looks blue.
- 6:01Speaker 6: It does look blue.
- 6:04Speaker 5: It should be red white and blue though, right, I
- 6:06Speaker 5: mean yeah, I mean they're on the ocean, so maybe
- 6:09Speaker 5: blue should be something that comes into play. But that
- 6:12Speaker 5: just has an eye on it. Now I want it.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Those look like Illinois hats that they colored in quickly.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Eye for Israel. Goody eras that's why he wants it.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yes, and it doesn't have the Italian flag on there,
- 6:24Speaker 5: so it would just be for me.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Correct?
- 6:27Speaker 1: Are you fired up for tonight?
- 6:28Speaker 4: Is he?
- 6:29Speaker 1: Are you fired up for this game?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Which game? What's tonight?
- 6:31Speaker 1: I mean the world?
- 6:32Speaker 5: The Hornets played the Heat again. Big time Eastern Conference matchup.
- 6:36Speaker 5: They're very close to each other in the standings. Huge
- 6:39Speaker 5: game tonight, so you're not. I mean, listen, if Taylor
- 6:46Speaker 5: texts me, let's say ten pm, and says you have
- 6:50Speaker 5: to turn on the World Baseball Classic right now, some
- 6:54Speaker 5: great stuff going on.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Maybe that's a maybe?
- 6:57Speaker 1: All right? So is he?
- 6:58Speaker 6: The pitching matchup tonight is Nolan McLain, a Mets rookie
- 7:02Speaker 6: versus Eduardo Rodriguez, who had a mid five e R
- 7:06Speaker 6: last year. If that doesn't get you excited, check your pulse.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Have allowed about to ask who who's starting for whom?
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yes, and put that on the poll. By the way,
- 7:13Speaker 1: if that doesn't get you excited, check your pulse.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Because Eduardo Rodriguez does not sound Italian either.
- 7:19Speaker 6: And it's basically a road game for the USA tonight.
- 7:22Speaker 6: This is like the USA. Sorry, the USA has played
- 7:26Speaker 6: three games this tournament, including tonight, where they're basically the
- 7:30Speaker 6: road team. They played Mexico in Houston and then they
- 7:32Speaker 6: played the Dominican Republic in Miami. So USA should be
- 7:37Speaker 6: pretty used to this. This atmosphere that they're walking into tonight.
- 7:40Speaker 5: That I'd be I'd want to watch, Like, I know
- 7:42Speaker 5: it's happened a couple of times, but I want to
- 7:43Speaker 5: see that type of reaction for a final if you
- 7:46Speaker 5: feel like you're a home in a home in a
- 7:48Speaker 5: road game on home turf.
- 7:49Speaker 6: Stu, Yeah, the best crowd I've ever been in really
- 7:54Speaker 6: last night last night.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Wow.
- 7:56Speaker 6: So it leads up to a thing or two to one.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Juhennio Suarez hit a home run at one point and
- 8:02Speaker 6: they get it. Venezuela stringing together a two out rally
- 8:06Speaker 6: and I'm the only Italian sitting in this section and
- 8:12Speaker 6: they are just stringing hit after hit after hit. Lone
- 8:16Speaker 6: Depot Park. It was shaking. It was so loud that
- 8:18Speaker 6: I was like, it does stink that my team is
- 8:22Speaker 6: on the receiving end of this. But it was cool
- 8:25Speaker 6: to just be in the building and see how fired
- 8:28Speaker 6: up everybody was.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Taylor put it on the pall after tonight. Will Loan
- 8:31Speaker 1: Depot ever shake again?
- 8:34Speaker 3: I mean, I'm just putting this together.
- 8:37Speaker 5: The US Venezuela and the sort of political situation going
- 8:40Speaker 5: on over here.
- 8:41Speaker 3: This could get ugly in this dance.
- 8:43Speaker 1: It could be a bad situation.
- 8:45Speaker 6: You're right, so, Stu, it's gonna shake again. It's just
- 8:47Speaker 6: gonna be three years from now, in the next World
- 8:49Speaker 6: Baseball Classic. In the next three years, Okay, rephrase it,
- 8:52Speaker 6: or if the Savannah Bananas come to town.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yes, Drew Brees played with him last night.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Did you see this shuck? Yeah, sod you do a dance?
- 9:00Speaker 1: No idea gimmick.
- 9:01Speaker 6: Get those gimmick guys out of here, gimmick.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Did you see the one dude who caught the baseball
- 9:06Speaker 5: mid backflip and then landed like a superhero. That is crazy,
- 9:11Speaker 5: one of the most impressive athletic feats I've ever seen.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's a gimmick.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I'm with Taylor, give me that gimmick all day.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 6: If you're over the age of eight and you're talking
- 9:21Speaker 6: to me about the Savannah Bananas and you're not bringing
- 9:23Speaker 6: your kids.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Get a life, Get out of here, get a life.
- 9:26Speaker 6: Get your gimmicks out of here. Baseball was meant to
- 9:29Speaker 6: be played the way baseball is being played.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Yes, Mike, Yeah, but you're taking your kids. You're taking
- 9:37Speaker 1: your kids.
- 9:38Speaker 3: No, not no choice. He's dragging his kids.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yes, get a life.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Nah, I'm all about it, Mike. You have fun.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Taylor also put this on the poll. Are the Chiefs
- 9:51Speaker 1: going to turn Justin Fields into a Hall of Fame
- 9:53Speaker 1: running back or wide receiver? I feel like they might.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Is he What were your thoughts here before we get
- 9:59Speaker 1: to stake on Jalen Waddle. It's weird. It's a rare
- 10:03Speaker 1: trade where I feel like it's good for both sides.
- 10:06Speaker 1: The Dolphins get a first round pick, they get a
- 10:08Speaker 1: third round pick, and they're clearly clearly starting over where
- 10:12Speaker 1: the Broncos are inside that championship window with a quarterback
- 10:15Speaker 1: on a rookie contract, and they get themselves a very
- 10:17Speaker 1: good wide receiver. Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 5: It is funny to me the people that are only
- 10:20Speaker 5: now recognizing that the Dolphins are tanking next year. I
- 10:23Speaker 5: saw something on a show earlier which just like, oh,
- 10:26Speaker 5: clearly the Dolphins are tank.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Yeah, no kidding, And we've known that.
- 10:30Speaker 5: It's just a matter of whether a chan's gonna be
- 10:32Speaker 5: gone too, I believe, even though he's not that expensive. Look,
- 10:36Speaker 5: it's interesting with Jalen Waddle because when he left Alabama
- 10:39Speaker 5: and they were in that he was in that group
- 10:41Speaker 5: with Devonte Smith and you know Ruggs was another receiver
- 10:45Speaker 5: he was out there with. They called him reportedly the
- 10:49Speaker 5: athletic one, which is crazy to think about when you're
- 10:51Speaker 5: comparing yourself to all these other athletic receivers. And so
- 10:55Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, this is gonna be lights out. This
- 10:56Speaker 5: guy's going to get open whenever he wants. He doesn't
- 11:00Speaker 5: strike me as the guy. You know, I play a
- 11:02Speaker 5: lot of football and there's guys that come in the
- 11:03Speaker 5: huddle and just say, trust me, I'll be open, just
- 11:07Speaker 5: throw me the ball, or I'll make the catch, just
- 11:09Speaker 5: throw me the ball.
- 11:11Speaker 3: He doesn't feel like that guy to me. He feels very.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Much like a system receiver where hey, like, I'm gonna
- 11:17Speaker 5: run my route amazingly and if the defense happens to
- 11:21Speaker 5: you know, have a hole right where I'm going throw
- 11:24Speaker 5: me that ball.
- 11:25Speaker 3: But I don't really have a history.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Of remembering him, you know, winning a bunch of fifty
- 11:30Speaker 5: to fifty balls, really just shaking his guy. Whether it
- 11:34Speaker 5: be on the line, whether it be on a move
- 11:36Speaker 5: or anything like that. He just seems like once he
- 11:38Speaker 5: is in open space, he's a good athlete. But it's
- 11:42Speaker 5: he a number one wide receiver that says I can
- 11:45Speaker 5: get that ball. Target him fifteen times a day a game,
- 11:48Speaker 5: and I'm gonna feel great about the end result.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Right, Well, the Dolphins got a number one pick for
- 11:53Speaker 1: a number two wide receiver.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Yeah, and I saw exactly and I saw you know,
- 11:57Speaker 5: they're even projected to possibly draft a wide receiver out eleven.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And if this is the way you're going, Yeah, you
- 12:02Speaker 3: get a guy who's not clearly a number one.
- 12:05Speaker 5: And you say, hey, I'll take my chances to see
- 12:07Speaker 5: if this next guy I draft can be a number
- 12:09Speaker 5: one at a lower cost.
- 12:10Speaker 1: The Dolphins have seven of the first ninety four picks
- 12:13Speaker 1: in this year's draft. Now do you trust them to
- 12:16Speaker 1: do the right things with those picks?
- 12:17Speaker 5: I mean, I do know these people have never drafted
- 12:19Speaker 5: for Miami before, so we'll see. This will be the
- 12:21Speaker 5: first chance that we get. But that having said that
- 12:24Speaker 5: about Jalen with Miami in terms of not being a
- 12:27Speaker 5: single like game breaking type of wide receiver, I do
- 12:30Speaker 5: think he's very good for bow Knicks and the Broncos
- 12:33Speaker 5: because bo Nicks is a system quarterback.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Right like.
- 12:36Speaker 5: He He's made some throws where I'm just like, man,
- 12:39Speaker 5: that's pretty impressive. But you don't leave him out here
- 12:42Speaker 5: to just sort of be the you know, the gun
- 12:46Speaker 5: slinging quarterback that you trust.
- 12:47Speaker 3: With every throw.
- 12:48Speaker 5: But if he sees a throw and it's there and
- 12:51Speaker 5: it's available, he can make that. So I think he
- 12:54Speaker 5: and Wadall are going to have a good relationship and
- 12:56Speaker 5: they're both going to, you know, benefit off of each other.
- 12:58Speaker 5: But I don't think it's going to be Waddle's going
- 13:00Speaker 5: to be my clear number one, fifteen to twenty targets
- 13:03Speaker 5: and we hope he catches like double figures.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I don't think it's going to be that.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Can you name a single wide receiver in the Dolphins
- 13:10Speaker 1: wide receiver room? Because Malik Willis cannot be happy with
- 13:13Speaker 1: the Dolphins getting rid of the one guy that he
- 13:16Speaker 1: may have come here.
- 13:17Speaker 5: For only because we just talked about him to too
- 13:19Speaker 5: at Well joining Warmer Bronco.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Yes, it's a very memorable name. But outside of that, no,
- 13:24Speaker 3: who else is in there? Malik Washington, Jalen Tolbert never
- 13:29Speaker 3: heard of him.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I'm reading here, by the way, I don't know this
- 13:31Speaker 1: off the top of my head. Terrence Marshall Junior, never
- 13:34Speaker 1: heard of him. THEO Weze Junior. A couple of juniors
- 13:37Speaker 1: cutting it up about that.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Wheeze is not a name I want from my athletic
- 13:41Speaker 3: wide receiver. He's out there wheezing.
- 13:43Speaker 1: No Taj Washington, A couple of Washington's cutting it up?
- 13:47Speaker 1: How about that? And of course a j Henning of course.
- 13:52Speaker 6: Poor Malik Willis. Oh my Malik Willison and Malik Washington.
- 13:58Speaker 6: A couple of moaks cutting it up.
- 14:00Speaker 5: H Hey, lot of cutting it up, but not a
- 14:02Speaker 5: lot of yards getting cut.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 14:07Speaker 2: Live WHEKDCID three pm Eastern twelve pm Pacific on Fox
- 14:12Speaker 2: Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 14:18Speaker 1: He was the Rookie of the Year, a three time
- 14:21Speaker 1: All Star, an MVP, a World Series champion.
- 14:24Speaker 3: He's done it all. Ryan Howard is with us.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You can check him out the six to one to
- 14:28Speaker 1: one podcast, which he co hosts with Jimmy Rollins, where
- 14:32Speaker 1: they talk to some of the biggest names and personalities
- 14:34Speaker 1: in sports, entertainment and culture. Ryan, are you enjoying the
- 14:37Speaker 1: podcast game?
- 14:39Speaker 4: Man?
- 14:39Speaker 7: I am. I'm loving it. I get to do it
- 14:41Speaker 7: with my boy young James Jimmy Rollins.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Uh.
- 14:44Speaker 7: We just continue to pick up where we left off
- 14:47Speaker 7: just clowning. You know. We get to include other people
- 14:50Speaker 7: along with that, so we're just we're having a lot
- 14:52Speaker 7: of fun doing it.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Is is Jimmy Rollins the most confident person you know
- 14:57Speaker 1: in your life.
- 14:59Speaker 7: That is going to be a very safe Yes, he
- 15:05Speaker 7: doesn't lack for confidence at all. Not a shy guy.
- 15:10Speaker 7: Not a shy guy at all, you know. But that's
- 15:13Speaker 7: just always been Jimmy, you know. I mean, obviously you
- 15:15Speaker 7: go back to when we were playing. He made the
- 15:17Speaker 7: prediction back in two thousand and seven of us being
- 15:19Speaker 7: the team to beat, and we followed it up. So
- 15:23Speaker 7: it's fun to be able to continue this journey with him.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:27Speaker 5: This has been driving me crazy ever since Perdomo struck
- 15:31Speaker 5: out against the United States the other day, where people
- 15:35Speaker 5: are discussing that you have to fight that ball off,
- 15:39Speaker 5: you have to with two strikes swing at anything near
- 15:42Speaker 5: the play. My thought process on that is the only
- 15:46Speaker 5: reason that's really a thing is because you're saying to yourself, well,
- 15:50Speaker 5: this umpire might be a dummy. He might not be
- 15:52Speaker 5: able to see that this is a ball, right, and
- 15:54Speaker 5: so I have to swing at that. But if you
- 15:55Speaker 5: have an eye, if you can discern what's the ball
- 15:58Speaker 5: and the strike and you let that go, oh you
- 16:00Speaker 5: have done your job. So you tell me, should he like,
- 16:04Speaker 5: let's say it was nineteen eighty and there's no idea
- 16:06Speaker 5: of ABS or anything like that, should he have swung
- 16:10Speaker 5: at that? Because I contend no, you just got to
- 16:12Speaker 5: trust that the umpire is gonna help good and do
- 16:14Speaker 5: the right thing.
- 16:15Speaker 7: Well, the first thing is is that you know the
- 16:18Speaker 7: umpires are human, and we talk about this a lot
- 16:23Speaker 7: where the action is happening so fast and it's it's
- 16:28Speaker 7: you know, less than a blink of an eye to
- 16:29Speaker 7: where these guys have to try to make you know,
- 16:34Speaker 7: in some instances kind of an educated guess, right, because
- 16:37Speaker 7: you know the ones that are right there, right down
- 16:38Speaker 7: the middle and you know belt high or whatnot, those
- 16:42Speaker 7: are those are gonna be pure strikes, balls like that
- 16:44Speaker 7: where it could be borderline where it's like where's the
- 16:46Speaker 7: bottom of the zone. You know this year for the
- 16:49Speaker 7: season coming up, you know, fortunately we'll have ABS and
- 16:53Speaker 7: that would be something to where Perdomo would be able
- 16:55Speaker 7: to go back and he would he would tap on that.
- 16:57Speaker 7: I will I will say there were calls you know,
- 17:01Speaker 7: both ways, you know, against both teams. That one obviously
- 17:05Speaker 7: is you know, having been a guy that's struck out
- 17:08Speaker 7: to end the game and into a big postseason game.
- 17:12Speaker 7: It's it's tough because you're you're sitting there and you
- 17:17Speaker 7: have a knowledge of what your strike zone is and
- 17:19Speaker 7: where the game is today. These guys with all the
- 17:23Speaker 7: analytics and all the information that they're given, you know,
- 17:26Speaker 7: one of the things they're told to do is not chase.
- 17:28Speaker 7: So they have a very good knowledge of the zone.
- 17:31Speaker 7: So for him to not go after that pitch, that's
- 17:34Speaker 7: whatever his zone was. And I mean, it's it's a
- 17:39Speaker 7: tough one. It's it's a very tough one. But you
- 17:42Speaker 7: know the umpires are going to make mistakes and you
- 17:44Speaker 7: know that's that's one now where you know, moving forward,
- 17:48Speaker 7: maybe the next WBC has the ABS and we don't
- 17:51Speaker 7: even have that problem.
- 17:52Speaker 5: But he sleeps fine at night, right, he knows he
- 17:55Speaker 5: did the right thing. Like I don't know if that's
- 17:56Speaker 5: happened to you in a decent spot or a big
- 17:59Speaker 5: spot or whatever, but you you gotta be comfortable with
- 18:01Speaker 5: your decision there, right, because you know who messed up
- 18:03Speaker 5: and it wasn't you who Perdomo.
- 18:06Speaker 7: Yeah, No, he don't sleep with No, he's not sleeping
- 18:08Speaker 7: They lost the game.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 7: Yeah, he's not sleeping good at all. He's not sleeping
- 18:14Speaker 7: good at all. I mean, you know, even if he
- 18:17Speaker 7: stayed within his zone, he stayed within what he was
- 18:20Speaker 7: trying to do in his approach, and to have something
- 18:24Speaker 7: like that happen, I mean, yeah, you're you're you're not
- 18:26Speaker 7: sleeping one because you lost the game, and two because
- 18:30Speaker 7: you know, you feel like you might have been cheated
- 18:32Speaker 7: or robbed of an opportunity to continue to try to
- 18:37Speaker 7: keep the ball game going.
- 18:38Speaker 6: Ryan, you had a thirteen year career in Philadelphia the
- 18:42Speaker 6: entire time. What is it like going through a slump
- 18:45Speaker 6: in Philadelphia with those fans sleepless nights?
- 18:48Speaker 7: I mean, wow, Wow, I'll tell you what, man, it's
- 18:52Speaker 7: it's Philadelphia is one of those places where the fans,
- 18:56Speaker 7: the passion of the fans, they want you to do well.
- 19:01Speaker 7: They want you to do well. They want you to
- 19:02Speaker 7: do so well that it hurts, and then when it
- 19:05Speaker 7: hurts you lash out sometime, you know, but they want
- 19:10Speaker 7: a blue collar effort. And I think like as long
- 19:12Speaker 7: as you can go out and try to give a
- 19:13Speaker 7: blue collar effort, they understand it. I mean, in years past,
- 19:17Speaker 7: you know, you got the whole thing. With throwing batteries
- 19:19Speaker 7: at snowballs at Santa Claus and you know, you get
- 19:23Speaker 7: booed here and there what not. And then the turnaround,
- 19:26Speaker 7: you know when when Trey Turner kind of came in
- 19:28Speaker 7: and he got off to a slow start, and you know,
- 19:32Speaker 7: the crowd decided to cheer him, you know, and then
- 19:35Speaker 7: he was able to turn it around. So, I mean,
- 19:38Speaker 7: it's it has its moments at times, but you got
- 19:42Speaker 7: to understand, Hey, that's what happens when you sign a
- 19:44Speaker 7: permission slip and you're playing in Philadelphia, you play in
- 19:46Speaker 7: that Northeast. You got to grow some thick skin. And
- 19:49Speaker 7: I say, if you can play in the Northeast starting
- 19:51Speaker 7: your season, your career out, then you can go play anywhere.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Speaking of guys playing in the Northeast, what do you
- 19:57Speaker 1: say to Yankee fans who are complaining that Aaron Judge
- 20:01Speaker 1: is not nearly as emotional or fired up to play
- 20:04Speaker 1: for the Yankees as he is for Team US at
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yankee fans want to see it all season, Ryan, You.
- 20:13Speaker 7: Know what, maybe we will. Yeah, maybe this is maybe
- 20:17Speaker 7: this is what gets them going, you know, for for
- 20:21Speaker 7: for those games. You know, he's just it's one hundred
- 20:23Speaker 7: and sixty two games, and with this WBC, I think
- 20:29Speaker 7: it's what it's maybe more like twelve, you know, like seven, eight,
- 20:32Speaker 7: ten games something like that. So it's uh, hopefully for
- 20:38Speaker 7: the Yankee fans and for Aaron Judge, you know, the
- 20:41Speaker 7: emotion that he's showing out here, he'll he'll carry it over,
- 20:45Speaker 7: you know, because this is a postseason, preseason, yes, the preseason. Yes,
- 20:49Speaker 7: you know what I mean. All these games me they
- 20:51Speaker 7: mean something. There, there's there's there's so much more to it,
- 20:55Speaker 7: and all these countries and all these players are putting
- 20:59Speaker 7: all this emotion into it, which I think is an
- 21:01Speaker 7: amazing for the game. We saw it in the World
- 21:03Speaker 7: Series last year, you know where you know, you had
- 21:07Speaker 7: the Dodgers and you had the Blue Jays going at
- 21:09Speaker 7: it last year and you could see the emotion from
- 21:12Speaker 7: both teams, and it's just just carrying over into this
- 21:15Speaker 7: World Baseball Classic, which hopefully you know, it'll carry over
- 21:19Speaker 7: into the season. But you got one hundred and sixty
- 21:20Speaker 7: two games, man, one hundred sixty You can't you can't
- 21:23Speaker 7: be like that every single day. You got yourself, Yeah, yeah,
- 21:27Speaker 7: you gotta pace yourself, pace yourself.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Did you find it ridiculous, like we did that. The
- 21:32Speaker 1: Italian team, all of them were from America.
- 21:39Speaker 7: But they represented though they represented they did Yeah, they
- 21:45Speaker 7: put they put Italy on their back, you know, and
- 21:49Speaker 7: they did a hell of a job. Man, they did
- 21:51Speaker 7: a hell of job. I mean, there's there's usually that
- 21:53Speaker 7: one Cinderella and the Italian team was that team. And
- 21:57Speaker 7: they played, they played hard, they played they played the
- 22:00Speaker 7: game the right way. That's that's the great part about
- 22:02Speaker 7: it is you're seeing different ways of how teams are
- 22:05Speaker 7: going about playing. And you know, Italy was able to
- 22:08Speaker 7: win their pool playing their way right. You know. Venezuela
- 22:13Speaker 7: obviously is one of those teams where you've got to, uh,
- 22:17Speaker 7: you have to put them away because that team, if
- 22:21Speaker 7: you let them hang around, they're gonna find a way
- 22:24Speaker 7: to to to hurt you. And they and they did
- 22:27Speaker 7: that against Japan and they did that against Italy.
- 22:29Speaker 5: The other night, Ryan, you and Chase Sutley were in
- 22:32Speaker 5: an episode of It's Always Sonny. I want to say
- 22:34Speaker 5: it was like their sixth season and they've been on forever. Now,
- 22:37Speaker 5: what was that appearance like for you? And like where
- 22:40Speaker 5: you are you?
- 22:41Speaker 4: Like?
- 22:41Speaker 3: Because that show's got.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Some some big time fans, are you like forever and
- 22:46Speaker 5: like embraced by the fans of that show.
- 22:49Speaker 7: You know what's funny is I'll have fans that will
- 22:51Speaker 7: come up and say they knew me more so from
- 22:54Speaker 7: that than which I'm like, you know what, I'll take it.
- 23:00Speaker 7: I'll take it.
- 23:00Speaker 1: No, you're a former MVP, get out of here. You're
- 23:03Speaker 1: an all time great.
- 23:04Speaker 7: You know what it's I don't. I don't count on
- 23:06Speaker 7: everybody to know who I am and that whole nine.
- 23:09Speaker 7: But if you come to me and say, oh my god, like, wait,
- 23:11Speaker 7: were you were you on? Are you on an episode
- 23:13Speaker 7: of It's Always Sunny or an episode of the Office,
- 23:16Speaker 7: or and it's like, well, yeah, it's like, oh my gosh, yeah,
- 23:20Speaker 7: and have no clue that I ever played baseball. So
- 23:23Speaker 7: it's uh. But it was a lot of fun. It
- 23:25Speaker 7: was fun being able to do it with Chase because normally,
- 23:28Speaker 7: like with Chase, everybody sees him, he's usually really quiet.
- 23:31Speaker 7: So getting for both of us kind of getting outside
- 23:35Speaker 7: of our box and our comfort zone, it was a
- 23:38Speaker 7: lot of fun to be able to do that.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yesterday on the show, it was a mount rushmore Monday,
- 23:43Speaker 1: and I want to explain the topic that we went
- 23:45Speaker 1: with yesterday and get your thoughts on this. Okay, Mount
- 23:48Speaker 1: Rushmore Monday, we each picked a Mount Rushmore of pictures
- 23:52Speaker 1: we would want to start.
- 23:54Speaker 3: In a game for our life. We drafted them. Yeah,
- 23:56Speaker 3: it was a draft, a.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Draft, So I just want Ryan Howard's Mount Rushmore of
- 24:03Speaker 1: guys he would want starting in a game for his life,
- 24:06Speaker 1: meaning you know, a game seven I must wouldn't get
- 24:09Speaker 1: m m m.
- 24:12Speaker 7: All right, I'm gonna go.
- 24:17Speaker 5: So I'll give you a second to think about it,
- 24:18Speaker 5: because when you name somebody, if we had them on
- 24:22Speaker 5: our Mount Rushmore yesterday, we are going to celebrate like crazy.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, right.
- 24:27Speaker 7: Yes, I'm going.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Bob Gibson he went, he went undrafted.
- 24:36Speaker 1: That is so unfortunate.
- 24:37Speaker 3: And immediately after the draft we all regretted it.
- 24:39Speaker 7: Yes, I'm gonna go Bob Gibson. Yep, I'm gonna go
- 24:48Speaker 7: Nolan Ryan.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Wow.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Yes, we drafted sixteen pictures.
- 24:54Speaker 7: Nolan drafted.
- 24:55Speaker 1: No, we drafted to almost sixteen pictures. No, Nolan, Ryan,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and so far.
- 24:59Speaker 3: I like your like your Mount Rushmore better than Yeah.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Ryan, You're winning by the way you are.
- 25:04Speaker 7: Let me see, I'm gonna I'm gonna bring it up
- 25:08Speaker 7: a little bit. I'm gonna go with my man, the
- 25:14Speaker 7: late great Roy Halliday. We got we got one, yes,
- 25:22Speaker 7: and the last, the last, but definitely not least. I'm
- 25:28Speaker 7: gonna bring back Satchel page Wow.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Off the board, have him go to Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I hear.
- 25:37Speaker 7: I want let Satchel do some work out there.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 5: You know what, if my life was at stake for
- 25:42Speaker 5: whatever reason, I'm going straight toward Ryan Howard's Mount Rushmore.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Those guys are going to kick some ass.
- 25:48Speaker 1: To say Bob Gibson, he cares yan.
- 25:52Speaker 3: On the top of the head.
- 25:54Speaker 7: If it's it's it's for my life. I know. Those
- 25:57Speaker 7: guys are not afraid they're hitting somebody. Yes, so some
- 26:00Speaker 7: going down.
- 26:02Speaker 1: They don't care about your life. They were just so
- 26:03Speaker 1: competitive that they want to win every time they take
- 26:05Speaker 1: them out, right, that's why you're facing them, right, yes, right, yeah,
- 26:09Speaker 1: we're bad at this.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Yes, that's the page. It's not even on the radar
- 26:12Speaker 3: over here.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Should have been Kurt Chilling. Not on the list for you,
- 26:16Speaker 1: all right? Come on, man, oh man, now that's it.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Okay, it's his list.
- 26:21Speaker 1: He gave us four. He's right, who is the guy
- 26:24Speaker 1: who is the person that you haven't had on the
- 26:27Speaker 1: podcast that you would most like to have on your podcast.
- 26:31Speaker 7: The person that I haven't had on the podcast yet. Yeah,
- 26:38Speaker 7: let's see, I would actually love I would love to
- 26:45Speaker 7: get man, there's so I mean, there's so many people
- 26:48Speaker 7: I'd love to get like a Michael Strahan on there,
- 26:52Speaker 7: you know, just just to be able to talk to him.
- 26:55Speaker 7: Met him before years ago and would love to get
- 26:59Speaker 7: him on there. Just he's just one of those guys
- 27:01Speaker 7: that you know, from the transition from football to all
- 27:04Speaker 7: the things that he's doing, you know, the from The
- 27:07Speaker 7: Morning America to his business endeavors. He's just such a great,
- 27:13Speaker 7: well rounded individual. So that's another person I would love
- 27:16Speaker 7: to be able to try to get up on the show.
- 27:18Speaker 5: I mean, there's just so many things to talk about
- 27:21Speaker 5: with him because he's done so many things you could
- 27:22Speaker 5: probably do.
- 27:23Speaker 7: Like he's like a Swiss army knife. He's a Swiss
- 27:25Speaker 7: army knife of greatness.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Yes, yes, a Swiss army knife of greatness. That is
- 27:29Speaker 1: well said. Are the Dodgers bad for baseball?
- 27:32Speaker 7: Oh? You know what. Look, we come from the era
- 27:37Speaker 7: of if you don't like it, fix it. It's one
- 27:43Speaker 7: of those things like you could say, are the Dodgers
- 27:45Speaker 7: bad for baseball? It used to be are the Yankees
- 27:46Speaker 7: bad for baseball? Right? Because every single year you looked
- 27:50Speaker 7: at the Yankees roster and on paper, the Yankees were
- 27:52Speaker 7: supposed to run away and win it. So I don't
- 27:56Speaker 7: think the Dodgers are bad for baseball. I think everybody's
- 27:59Speaker 7: You just have to figure it out. You got to
- 28:01Speaker 7: figure out what works for you. I mean, you can't
- 28:03Speaker 7: be mad at them because of the success that they're
- 28:06Speaker 7: having and how they're going about doing it. You've got
- 28:09Speaker 7: to figure out how to do that for yourself.
- 28:11Speaker 5: The only thing I have a question for you, because
- 28:13Speaker 5: I know he's been on the pod and I've always
- 28:15Speaker 5: been intrigued by him as a personality.
- 28:17Speaker 3: How crazy is Hunter Pen's actually, you know what, He's.
- 28:20Speaker 7: Got the eyes crazy, It's just the energy level is
- 28:25Speaker 7: always up there. He's such a great guy, positive guy.
- 28:30Speaker 7: The energy level. I'm like, if I had like just
- 28:32Speaker 7: a fourth of what he'd have, I mean I'd be good.
- 28:37Speaker 7: He's just one of those very good, high energy guys.
- 28:41Speaker 7: So yeah, Hunter is great man, He's awesome.
- 28:44Speaker 5: There's a phrase we just learned, is it beamed up
- 28:46Speaker 5: or beamed out? I think it's beamed up and he's
- 28:48Speaker 5: just probably naturally beamed up.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, but those eyes are crazy. He's got some
- 28:53Speaker 1: crazy in those eyes, doesn't he. I mean, have you
- 28:58Speaker 1: filled out an NCAA bracket, Ryan Howard?
- 29:01Speaker 4: I have not.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I have not.
- 29:03Speaker 7: I have not yet.
- 29:03Speaker 1: But you're planning. You're planning on it, right.
- 29:06Speaker 7: Probably going to try to throw one out there.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, I'm going to.
- 29:09Speaker 7: Try to throw one out there. It's tough, it's I mean,
- 29:13Speaker 7: there's there's a lot of good teams. There was a
- 29:15Speaker 7: lot of parody this year. You know, Arizona was looking
- 29:20Speaker 7: really really good early on, and then you had Houston
- 29:24Speaker 7: right there, Michigan, all those all the you know, those
- 29:28Speaker 7: squads there. It's going to be interesting because for whatever reason,
- 29:34Speaker 7: I always feel like Michigan's I haven't. I've been so
- 29:39Speaker 7: busy ripping and running around. I didn't even get to
- 29:41Speaker 7: see the election show yet. But State made it.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Michigan, Yeah, yeah, they made it.
- 29:48Speaker 7: It's more Michigan State to me. Man is always tom
- 29:53Speaker 7: Is like they always find a way to like make
- 29:57Speaker 7: it to the elite eight.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Every year they start.
- 30:01Speaker 7: Out hot, like they're in the top four. They disappear
- 30:04Speaker 7: in the middle of the year, and then all of
- 30:06Speaker 7: a sudden permanent time, right they find themselves in like
- 30:10Speaker 7: the Sweet sixteen Elite eight six.
- 30:12Speaker 1: One one podcast. Wherever you get your podcast, Ryan, we
- 30:14Speaker 1: appreciate the time. Go to United States. I have guys
- 30:17Speaker 1: here who are Yankee fans who aren't really rooting for
- 30:20Speaker 1: the US because they don't want to root for Roman Anthony.
- 30:22Speaker 1: It's absurd, I mean, it really is. Tell him it's
- 30:24Speaker 1: a third Brian, Tell tell Taylor right there, he's a jacket.
- 30:29Speaker 7: On the same team. Thank you, all the same team
- 30:31Speaker 7: right now?
- 30:32Speaker 1: Thank you?
- 30:33Speaker 7: The same team.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're not rooting for any Mets though, right,
- 30:36Speaker 1: I mean, thank you, thank you, Ryan. We appreciate the time.
- 30:43Speaker 7: Thank you guys.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Okay, well all right, thank you, all right.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 30:49Speaker 2: live weekday, said three pm Eastern, twelve pm Pacific.
- 30:55Speaker 1: It's March and the head coach of HOFTRA is going
- 30:57Speaker 1: to join us right now, Speedy Claxton. I'm so excited
- 31:00Speaker 1: for this.
- 31:00Speaker 3: I love this team coming out of the Midwest.
- 31:02Speaker 4: I do.
- 31:03Speaker 5: Just in case Speedy is confused, No, we're not going
- 31:05Speaker 5: to offer all one hundred names on that list, just
- 31:07Speaker 5: ten the time Speedy Colaxton is with us.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Speedy, thank you for joining us.
- 31:13Speaker 4: How are you good? Thank you for having me?
- 31:17Speaker 1: Speedy. I am wondering because I followed you during your
- 31:20Speaker 1: playing career. Uh when is it? Because it's such a
- 31:23Speaker 1: cool thing. You you were born in Long Island, you
- 31:26Speaker 1: went to school at Hofstra, and now you're coaching Hofstra
- 31:29Speaker 1: and you coached him into the NCAA tournament. Such a
- 31:32Speaker 1: cool story. When did you decide that head coaching was
- 31:35Speaker 1: going to be a thing for you?
- 31:39Speaker 4: It came later on in my playing days, my last
- 31:43Speaker 4: year when I was a Golden State done Nelson. At
- 31:46Speaker 4: the time, he's the only player in my head because
- 31:50Speaker 4: up until that point I had no interest of coaching.
- 31:54Speaker 4: But one day he pulled me to the stars and
- 31:57Speaker 4: he's like, Speedy, have you ever thought about culture? And
- 31:59Speaker 4: I got said it up until that point and he's
- 32:02Speaker 4: like I was like, no, not really, and he's like,
- 32:04Speaker 4: you should think about it. I think it would make
- 32:06Speaker 4: a hell of a coach. And you know here I here,
- 32:09Speaker 4: you have a Hall of Fame coach. Tell me I
- 32:11Speaker 4: shoul get into Colder. So that's what I told you
- 32:13Speaker 4: to give it some thoughts.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Speedy Israel Gutierra's here.
- 32:17Speaker 5: You just just researching this interview just brings me back
- 32:20Speaker 5: so many memories because you started in the league when
- 32:22Speaker 5: I started covering the league back in two thousand and
- 32:25Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm just looking at the game logs from
- 32:27Speaker 5: your guys's finals.
- 32:28Speaker 3: He was with the Spurs and three you guys.
- 32:31Speaker 5: Left or held the nets under ninety points in every single.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Game of that finals. Man, what a different time that was.
- 32:38Speaker 5: How much from Greg Popovich did you learn and you know,
- 32:42Speaker 5: just about coaching. I know you said it was later
- 32:44Speaker 5: in your career that you you sort of got the
- 32:46Speaker 5: itch for it, But how much did Greg Popovich help
- 32:48Speaker 5: you out there?
- 32:49Speaker 4: The biggest The biggest thing I've learned from post Top
- 32:54Speaker 4: was how to relate to people and how to treat everybody,
- 32:58Speaker 4: all your players to staying on if they start player
- 33:02Speaker 4: all the less man on your team, like include everybody,
- 33:08Speaker 4: because that's how you really, you know, gain the respect
- 33:11Speaker 4: of everyone on the team.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Who is the who's the coach you've leaned on the most?
- 33:17Speaker 1: You played for Jay Wright? Is that the guy you've
- 33:19Speaker 1: leaned on the most in terms of your coaching career.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Honestly, I will probably Fortunately, I was fortunate to play
- 33:27Speaker 4: for some Hall of Fame coaches and coach Right and
- 33:31Speaker 4: Pop and Larry Brown. But the person I lean most
- 33:35Speaker 4: on will be coach Shaul Maanhouse, who gave me my
- 33:38Speaker 4: first thought into this coaching thing. He's really he's the
- 33:43Speaker 4: one who really taught me the game to a coaching lens.
- 33:48Speaker 6: Hey Sweedy Taylor. I'm also from from New York. What
- 33:52Speaker 6: do you think Hofstra has to do this tournament to
- 33:54Speaker 6: take the New York's team label away from Saint John's.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Yes, uh, I don't know. Maybe win a couple of
- 34:02Speaker 4: games here in the tonament and have them get a uh,
- 34:06Speaker 4: you know, have them have an early exit.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Now that's a great answer. Just go further than Saint
- 34:12Speaker 1: John's and you will take the city over. Ye yes, yes, then.
- 34:16Speaker 4: They have no choice but to move for us.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Yes, uh, tell us about your team speedy and what
- 34:21Speaker 1: makes your team so dangerous in this tournament here?
- 34:25Speaker 4: What a funny, exciting and we play a fun random basketball.
- 34:30Speaker 4: I have two really really good guards. And college basketball,
- 34:35Speaker 4: you give yourself a high chance of winning when you
- 34:37Speaker 4: have when you get good God plays and I have
- 34:40Speaker 4: two of the best, you know, starting with President Edmey's
- 34:44Speaker 4: young calendar freshman who exceeded expectations. He's he's one of
- 34:50Speaker 4: our hardest workers, and he really truly loves the game
- 34:54Speaker 4: and that's why he's having the success that he's having.
- 34:58Speaker 4: And the pu's Davis, who will playing the year in
- 35:01Speaker 4: our conference, who didn't make any all conference teams last season,
- 35:07Speaker 4: and then you know, he came back and he worked
- 35:09Speaker 4: his butt off and you know he was playing the
- 35:12Speaker 4: year and he's anotherttle hard work. Like both those guys,
- 35:16Speaker 4: they come in and they post the game the right way, speedy.
- 35:20Speaker 5: I'm curious because you mentioned your freshman guard there, and
- 35:23Speaker 5: I've seen I don't know if it's just college basketball
- 35:25Speaker 5: getting more of my attention again or just sports fans attentions,
- 35:29Speaker 5: but I feel like there are a lot of like
- 35:32Speaker 5: really good players in places you wouldn't even think of,
- 35:35Speaker 5: and I'm watching a lot of highlights and I'm like,
- 35:37Speaker 5: that's an NBA talented player right there. I'm just curious
- 35:41Speaker 5: from your perspective, coaching at a school like Hofstra, but
- 35:43Speaker 5: seeing so many others, have you seen just more basketball talent,
- 35:47Speaker 5: just more spread out and is that just a factor
- 35:50Speaker 5: of hey, basketball is super popular, or do.
- 35:52Speaker 3: You think maybe nil or something like that has something
- 35:55Speaker 3: to do with it.
- 35:55Speaker 4: I see, I will n I have a lot to
- 35:58Speaker 4: do with it.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Had to do with it.
- 36:01Speaker 4: You know, these kids they gravitateds was anybody who gives
- 36:06Speaker 4: me the most money. So if you're a school that
- 36:09Speaker 4: has a lot of money, you do be successful. You
- 36:11Speaker 4: get really good play that you know in the past
- 36:15Speaker 4: you might not have been able to get.
- 36:16Speaker 3: It also cares because you got got Alabama in the
- 36:21Speaker 3: first round.
- 36:22Speaker 1: There.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Alabama famously high scoring team. They are going to be
- 36:26Speaker 3: without one of their better scorers there.
- 36:28Speaker 5: But your guys defense, I think it's top twenty nationally
- 36:32Speaker 5: when you get to tournaments like this, when you get
- 36:34Speaker 5: to this type of preparation, which one of those normally
- 36:37Speaker 5: wins out because obviously in the NBA people talk NBA
- 36:39Speaker 5: defense wins championships.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Well, I hope it's they have a high paying offense.
- 36:49Speaker 4: They like to get up and down the part and
- 36:50Speaker 4: playing really fast like the ship the three. So hopefully
- 36:55Speaker 4: they're having an off night, you know, all day come Friday.
- 37:01Speaker 1: What's the thing you have to stop Alabama from doing?
- 37:03Speaker 1: In order to advance in this tournament.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Shooting the fretball. We gotta, we gotta, we got to
- 37:10Speaker 4: go down that temple because they like to play gamely fast,
- 37:13Speaker 4: so we gotta play at al tempo and not try
- 37:15Speaker 4: to beat them at their gains and then after that
- 37:19Speaker 4: keep them off the less because they're they're longer and
- 37:22Speaker 4: athletic than us. You know, we gotta hit them before
- 37:26Speaker 4: they hit us and then limit them to one shot.
- 37:31Speaker 6: Speedy. Is there anything that you have to do different
- 37:33Speaker 6: as a coach going into this game knowing that for
- 37:36Speaker 6: your team, for your players, this is the biggest game
- 37:39Speaker 6: that they're gonna play in, and just trying to prepare
- 37:42Speaker 6: them for that.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Moment, how they have to do anything different. It's not
- 37:50Speaker 4: the first time we played against a high major opponent,
- 37:54Speaker 4: you know, bigger stage. But my guys are gamers. They're
- 37:58Speaker 4: not gonna be scared of the moment at all. Don't
- 38:01Speaker 4: I don't toplate.
- 38:02Speaker 5: That, you know what, I'm not gonna lie. I had
- 38:06Speaker 5: no idea the Hofster mascot was the Hofster Pride. I'm
- 38:09Speaker 5: guessing that's a pride of Lion.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 38:12Speaker 3: Yes, that's a heck of a mascot. Man, I love that.
- 38:15Speaker 3: There's no question there.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I'm just saying I love it island. Man, what you
- 38:18Speaker 1: mean tell him Speedy exactly exactly? What is the pizza
- 38:26Speaker 1: joint that on Long Island that Speedy Claxton goes to
- 38:29Speaker 1: when he when he wants a good slice of pizza?
- 38:32Speaker 4: Oh? Man, you gotta get me in trouble here, man.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Why I go to a bunch of spots and they
- 38:39Speaker 4: don't think they're my favorite?
- 38:45Speaker 1: Wait, there are ten pizza boilers on Long Island that
- 38:47Speaker 1: think Speedy Claxton is their favorite pizza boiler.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm a pizza so I eat pizza often, so
- 38:58Speaker 4: it kind of depends on Well. Man, if I'm around,
- 39:00Speaker 4: I like to go to the spot called Franktoni's. They
- 39:04Speaker 4: serve up a really good slave nice.
- 39:07Speaker 1: How do you feel about pineapple as a topping pizza? Yeah,
- 39:10Speaker 1: it's terrible.
- 39:11Speaker 4: No, no, no, no no. I'm a New York and
- 39:13Speaker 4: we won't do we don't do topping.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Really top.
- 39:20Speaker 4: Pepperoni.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Yeah, right, because the plain slice is so good on
- 39:25Speaker 1: Long Island and in New York that you don't need
- 39:26Speaker 1: a topping.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Right, No, exactly.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Yeah, man, that's such a great point because I think that, Yeah,
- 39:32Speaker 5: my favorite New York style pizza never has pepperoni on it.
- 39:35Speaker 5: But if you give me the little pepperonis that are
- 39:37Speaker 5: kind of cupped and they kind of save.
- 39:39Speaker 1: A little bit of oil in that, those are good,
- 39:42Speaker 1: I mean seedy. Those are good.
- 39:44Speaker 4: About the cup pepperoni?
- 39:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, Wait, so there are ten pizza parlors across
- 39:51Speaker 1: Long Island where you walk in they think that that's
- 39:54Speaker 1: your favorite pizza parlor. You're not paying for the pizza,
- 39:56Speaker 1: are you anywhere?
- 39:58Speaker 4: Oh No, it's it's fussly not this week I've been.
- 40:02Speaker 4: I've been. I've been here for all week. I love it.
- 40:08Speaker 4: I wear house, I've been in a house. I've been
- 40:10Speaker 4: wearing a house to a loud and proud this thing.
- 40:12Speaker 4: I'll tell you that everybody.
- 40:13Speaker 5: I was gonna say, do you wear all Hopster gear?
- 40:16Speaker 5: Do they just just wait for them to recognize you anyway?
- 40:19Speaker 4: No? No, No, I wear all house of gear from
- 40:21Speaker 4: head to toe.
- 40:23Speaker 1: I love it, speedy.
- 40:24Speaker 6: How do you kind of use a week like this
- 40:26Speaker 6: to kind of boost your program and set yourself up,
- 40:29Speaker 6: whether it comes to N I L or just the
- 40:31Speaker 6: exposure that you guys are getting playing in this kind
- 40:34Speaker 6: of tournament.
- 40:36Speaker 4: Oh yeah, definitely week maximized in the exposure. I think
- 40:40Speaker 4: my phone has been non stop ringing with you know,
- 40:43Speaker 4: anterview requests and you know, everybody just trying to reach
- 40:46Speaker 4: out and congratulate me. So I've been all over the
- 40:49Speaker 4: man doing interviews. It seems like I do an interview
- 40:52Speaker 4: every hour on the on the hour.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I texted Katie Nolan, who went to a hof Dra
- 40:58Speaker 1: media friend of mine, and I asked her her thoughts
- 41:01Speaker 1: on Hofstra basketball and this is what March is all about.
- 41:04Speaker 1: She said, in speedy Claxton, we trust. I mean, that's
- 41:07Speaker 1: all she has.
- 41:08Speaker 4: I like that. I like that. Yeah.
- 41:10Speaker 1: She also went on to say they haven't so excited.
- 41:13Speaker 7: Man.
- 41:14Speaker 4: I'm happy for myself, the program, but especially the university
- 41:17Speaker 4: in the community because they deserved this.
- 41:21Speaker 1: This is also very March here, they said. She said
- 41:24Speaker 1: they have a student named German, but that he's from
- 41:27Speaker 1: Belarus and so and I responded that means nothing to me,
- 41:30Speaker 1: and she said, March right, Yes, you're laughing, Speedy. I
- 41:38Speaker 1: have you penned in to my final four? Is he
- 41:40Speaker 1: look at my bracket now? I haven't filled out the rest?
- 41:44Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yes, I have you in ped not pencil. I can't
- 41:47Speaker 1: erase it. So it's in pen it's an ink. And
- 41:50Speaker 1: so therefore you guys, yes, yes, and I will be
- 41:54Speaker 1: behind you the entire way. I do have ten ten
- 42:00Speaker 1: favorite Beza joints across Long Island, and now all ten
- 42:03Speaker 1: of them they're they're my favorite. We have a mount
- 42:07Speaker 1: rushmore of Hofstra graduates for you. Would you be interested
- 42:11Speaker 1: in hearing that? Not sports, not athletes, just a mount
- 42:14Speaker 1: rushmore of people who have graduated from Hofstra University.
- 42:18Speaker 4: Of course, I I hope.
- 42:20Speaker 5: I'm a I was gonna say, if it was a
- 42:23Speaker 5: sports mount rushmore, it would just have the one face.
- 42:26Speaker 3: It would just be yours.
- 42:28Speaker 6: There are some names here, is he there? I want
- 42:30Speaker 6: to spoil my list?
- 42:33Speaker 4: We got we got the famous ones.
- 42:34Speaker 6: Now, yes, that's it, that's it, speedy, you know what
- 42:38Speaker 6: that was? That was a guy not from New York
- 42:40Speaker 6: talking right.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Yes, he doesn't realize the bona fides of Hofstra University.
- 42:45Speaker 1: He just doesn't. He doesn't get the history there, let's
- 42:47Speaker 1: hear it, Taylor.
- 42:48Speaker 6: So the first name up on my mount Rushmore of
- 42:50Speaker 6: Hofshare alumni actor James Kahn. Wow, dad from Elf.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Wow, that's a good one.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Dad from that's where you went.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Listen, Speedy better be on this Mount Rushmore.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Man, go ahead, we have a couple of known actors. Man.
- 43:07Speaker 6: Yeah, the second name is also a known actor. It's
- 43:10Speaker 6: Christopher Walking.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Oh wow, the way.
- 43:15Speaker 5: Speedy Stu Gotts does the worst uh impression of this
- 43:19Speaker 5: actor ever?
- 43:20Speaker 3: You ready to hear it?
- 43:21Speaker 1: The watch?
- 43:22Speaker 3: That's that's his, Christopher Walk.
- 43:24Speaker 7: It's always got.
- 43:28Speaker 6: The third name on my Mount Rushmore maybe my favorite
- 43:31Speaker 6: NFL player ever, Wayne Quebec.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Wayne, I know, I know you're going. Wayne.
- 43:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 3: The last good Jet.
- 43:42Speaker 1: I want to argue, I can't put it on the
- 43:44Speaker 1: poll was Wayne Grebett, the last good Jet. Fourth name,
- 43:47Speaker 1: Taylor better be Speedy Claxton.
- 43:49Speaker 6: The fourth name on my Mount Rushmore of Hofshore alumni.
- 43:52Speaker 6: It's Speedy Clax.
- 43:57Speaker 4: There we go, There we go. Yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Did he leave someone off? Speedy? Did he leave someone
- 44:02Speaker 1: off that is deserving of being on the Mount Rushmore
- 44:05Speaker 1: of Hofstra alumni.
- 44:07Speaker 4: Man, it's so many, Honestly, Francis Ford Coppola is Marcus
- 44:15Speaker 4: Colton could be up there.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, Okay, you're right. He left him out.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Bernie made off.
- 44:19Speaker 5: Although I don't think they want to put him on
- 44:21Speaker 5: the Mount rushmore anymore.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we're not going to promote that one Speedy.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Last thing for me.
- 44:28Speaker 5: For some I remember you mostly as a Philadelphia seventy
- 44:30Speaker 5: six er, and then I look at your career list
- 44:32Speaker 5: and I'm like, man, you played for a lot of
- 44:33Speaker 5: teams there, but you always brought value to every single
- 44:37Speaker 5: team you played for. I'm just curious. What did you
- 44:40Speaker 5: try to do every single time you went to a
- 44:42Speaker 5: new team, And just like a life lesson, you learned
- 44:44Speaker 5: from that ability.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Honestly, just try to be me. Always be positive, always
- 44:52Speaker 4: be upbeat, and honestly, just be the ultimate teammate.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Speedy, as Christopher Walkin read out to you, I mean,
- 45:01Speaker 1: just not yet.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Maybe maybe he will, though not yet, not as of yet.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Right beat Alabama. But if he does check his watch
- 45:09Speaker 1: right now, if he does reach out to you.
- 45:11Speaker 4: Don't watch, I'm sure he might. He might be at
- 45:14Speaker 4: the game everything.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Right only, but yeah, but he'll be on the bandwagon.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I mean, come on, let's go, it's it's March.
- 45:21Speaker 4: We'll we'll welcome in with open arms.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Though, Speedy, good luck to you again. I have you
- 45:29Speaker 1: penned into the final four. So I am expecting to
- 45:31Speaker 1: see you in Indianapolis competing for a national invested here Speedy, Yes,
- 45:35Speaker 1: we are.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Thank you all right?
- 45:38Speaker 1: If you win, you got to come back on Okay,
- 45:40Speaker 1: is that a deal? He's already Yeah, he knows, he knows.
- 45:44Speaker 1: That's why his name is Speedy.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Before you got to make a commitment.
- 45:48Speaker 6: So they're playing in Tampa. I might make the trip
- 45:50Speaker 6: after talking to you.
- 45:51Speaker 1: You're not going to make that Italian hat
