- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Coming up an NHL Unscripted.
- 0:23Speaker 1: You knew Pope Lea was a White Sox fan, Perhaps
- 0:24Speaker 1: he's also a Flyers fan. Nick Kirpriers is going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: join us to preview the NHL playoffs and plus no
- 0:30Speaker 1: no etro, what happened to that statue? Of course, it's
- 0:32Speaker 1: an exciting time right now if you're a hockey fan.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Nate Thompson, long for the ride.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm out named Burke, Jason de Murs, talpinchef'scare producer, maybe
- 0:38Speaker 1: some new listeners now at the playoffs right around the corner.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And before we get into it, you look at the
- 0:43Speaker 1: biggest surprises and disappointments of this regular season JD. It's
- 0:46Speaker 1: pretty straightforward to me as they look at the landscape.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Biggest surprise to me the Sabers in the playoffs first
- 0:51Speaker 1: time in fifteen years. Now you can point the fact
- 0:54Speaker 1: Utah's him first time since the team moved, Flyers first
- 0:56Speaker 1: time since twenty twenty, Ducks are in first times to
- 0:58Speaker 1: twenty eighteen, and the biggest disappointment of the season just
- 1:01Speaker 1: came back from Toronto happy birthday to my mom.
- 1:03Speaker 2: By the way, grew up for dinner on Sunday night.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Hey Mama, RK mama.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Rickets a happy seventy six. But the mainle Leafs the
- 1:09Speaker 1: biggest disappointment of the season. Okay, how else? How is
- 1:11Speaker 1: there any other answer?
- 1:12Speaker 2: They made the playoffs nine straight seasons. They didn't make
- 1:14Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Maybe you could say Panthers biggest disappointment, but they had injuries.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Easy answer for me.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Go ahead. Biggest disappointment for me probably would be the
- 1:23Speaker 3: Detroit Red Wings. I would say that firmly in the East. Firmly.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I think they were top spot in the Atlantic for
- 1:32Speaker 3: a little bit, and like they've done so many times before,
- 1:35Speaker 3: they've extended their playoff trout and they just fell out
- 1:39Speaker 3: in an awful way. We heard Todd mccollin talk. He
- 1:42Speaker 3: had a great speech just about this is hockey town
- 1:45Speaker 3: and these fans clamor for playoffs and they're they're so disappointed.
- 1:50Speaker 4: There.
- 1:50Speaker 3: There are a lot of disappointments though this year in
- 1:52Speaker 3: my mind, but I put Detroit at the Helm just
- 1:55Speaker 3: because you know, Toronto. I didn't like them, and they
- 1:59Speaker 3: kind of had all these injuries and we expected.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Companies missed the playoffs. Come one years, it seems gon
- 2:05Speaker 2: to miss the plas.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we fucking knew in the first twenty games that
- 2:10Speaker 3: they were done and they were just were kind of
- 2:12Speaker 3: hanging on. Detroit was firmly in it. So for me,
- 2:14Speaker 3: it's Detroit my biggest surprise, I got to say, and
- 2:17Speaker 3: I probably, yeah, my biggest surprise, it's got to go
- 2:21Speaker 3: I know everybody's gonna say Buffalo, but it's gotta go Philly.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I think Philly battling back, especially where they were in
- 2:27Speaker 3: the standings, And we did some metrics on them yesterday
- 2:32Speaker 3: on first shift was with EJ. Raddick was since the
- 2:35Speaker 3: Olympic break, like their first in rush differential, So how
- 2:39Speaker 3: many odd man rushes they get and how many rush
- 2:41Speaker 3: chances they deny? Their first in the league. So they
- 2:44Speaker 3: tightened up some stuff and like change their system. So, uh,
- 2:48Speaker 3: kudos to those guys for kind of clamping down. And
- 2:51Speaker 3: obviously Dan Vladar the star, as Kevin Weeks said, it's
- 2:54Speaker 3: just incredible run here in the second half. So Philly
- 2:58Speaker 3: biggest surprise, biggest disappointment Distois red Wings.
- 3:01Speaker 1: All right, Yeah, as far as the Flowers are concerned,
- 3:03Speaker 1: nine points. It will play but one point there a
- 3:05Speaker 1: three point eight percent. Obviously they played great and the
- 3:08Speaker 1: beneficiary is the fact that Islanders and Blue Jackets fell apart.
- 3:10Speaker 1: By the way, we are going to talk about Bluejackets
- 3:12Speaker 1: and Rick Bonus is fiery tired against his team.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Nate. For you, biggest surprise, biggest disappointment.
- 3:18Speaker 5: For me, it's Winnipeg. Biggest disappointment. I think you go
- 3:22Speaker 5: from Prion's Trophy winners to missing the playoffs next year.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Like I understand that there's some drop off a little bit,
- 3:28Speaker 5: but not that much. I mean, especially I know they
- 3:31Speaker 5: had some injury issues. Hellabuck was out, they out, They
- 3:34Speaker 5: got off to a decent start, and then the wheels
- 3:36Speaker 5: fell off and then you know, too little, too late
- 3:39Speaker 5: down the stretch. But Winnipeg for me is a big disappointment,
- 3:42Speaker 5: I think for that reason, biggest surprise I think for
- 3:46Speaker 5: my For me, I think just start of the season,
- 3:48Speaker 5: we didn't expect him to be in the playoffs and
- 3:50Speaker 5: almost one hundred points is a Pittsburgh Penguins I think
- 3:53Speaker 5: just with what Dan Mus has done, Dubis big Dick Dan,
- 3:58Speaker 5: big Dick Dan, They've had, they've had, they've had different
- 4:02Speaker 5: injuries along the way, with Malk Malking being out Crosby
- 4:06Speaker 5: and they just kept chugging along. So those two teams
- 4:09Speaker 5: for me are biggest surprise and disappointments for sure.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So since Demers brought it up, I do have to
- 4:15Speaker 1: bring up this beaus we all work at anytel network.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I don't realize the influence sometimes the host may have
- 4:19Speaker 1: in terms of sitting the tone. Jordan Schmaltz was with
- 4:22Speaker 1: me for the first time and off air when we
- 4:25Speaker 1: had the Penguins side off air, I said, big Dick
- 4:27Speaker 1: Dan Muse and he and Steve Grimson laughed like, oh,
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's Demrc's joke. I said, He's a small guy with
- 4:31Speaker 1: a big voice, so clearly must have be a huge wrench.
- 4:34Speaker 1: When we came out of break on television on Television,
- 4:38Speaker 1: National Television, Jordan Schwaltz when I asked him, Hey, what
- 4:40Speaker 1: do you make of the Buffalo Sabers and just the
- 4:42Speaker 1: great season they pass all they'veen pretty good? Go im
- 4:44Speaker 1: out to New York Islander's Matthew Shaffery, because honestly, I
- 4:46Speaker 1: think Matthew Shaver shoot up to training camp, pulled out
- 4:49Speaker 1: his wrench, put it on the floor and goes here
- 4:50Speaker 1: we go boys hop on.
- 4:53Speaker 2: This is live television. You can't say wrench. You can't
- 4:56Speaker 2: do you.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Could say wrench, I said popping cherries. You can say
- 5:00Speaker 3: whatever until they cut, until they fire you.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Yeah, and the usually just get a little warm first.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Right dropped his wrench. Matthew Shaver does pp wrench him?
- 5:09Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:10Speaker 1: I want confirmation now from Tomas Siki just how big
- 5:12Speaker 1: is the wrench?
- 5:13Speaker 3: Give him the shower. We need somebody, We need the shower. Chronicles.
- 5:16Speaker 2: One thing, that one thing that's the stute when you're
- 5:19Speaker 2: professional athlete.
- 5:19Speaker 1: These guys are naked all the time, like they just
- 5:21Speaker 1: we're just constantly naked with Peoplet's not even know exactly,
- 5:26Speaker 1: just walk around naked to have the conversation. All right,
- 5:28Speaker 1: let's get to the playoffs. It's that's some of year,
- 5:30Speaker 1: so Lightning halves. I will go to Quebec. Date of
- 5:32Speaker 1: Jason Demurz first first time these two teams meeting in
- 5:35Speaker 1: the playoffs is twenty twenty one Cup final. Lightning won
- 5:37Speaker 1: at four one to get their second straight Cup. The
- 5:39Speaker 1: teams split their first four meetings of this season, Tampa
- 5:42Speaker 1: wining the first two. In December, Montreal winning the last
- 5:44Speaker 1: two late in the season. Dopson's out for Montreal. No
- 5:47Speaker 1: update on Victor Hedman remains on leave from the team.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I'm a voter along with Andy Petrilla for the awards,
- 5:53Speaker 1: so I was going through I'm stuff to make my
- 5:54Speaker 1: final picks. But I've got Kurt Suzuki potentially winning the Selkie.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I got to potentially up for the Lady Bing. I
- 5:59Speaker 1: got Dobish on my first team All Rookie team. They've
- 6:02Speaker 1: had a great season, JD. I got the lightning when
- 6:04Speaker 1: he get in six?
- 6:05Speaker 2: How about you?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I will? I want to say seven. I want
- 6:09Speaker 3: to give Montreal a chance because they're exciting Brandon hockey,
- 6:11Speaker 3: and you know, you never know what a goalie can do,
- 6:14Speaker 3: and that's just kind of my safety pick. But I
- 6:16Speaker 3: just think with Dobson out and I don't know when
- 6:18Speaker 3: he's returning, I think they have the return set for
- 6:20Speaker 3: like eight Pril twenty six, that's about you know, four
- 6:24Speaker 3: or five games in so but I just no Adoptson
- 6:27Speaker 3: does everything for that team. I know they have David
- 6:29Speaker 3: Reinbacher up trying to kind of maybe fill the role.
- 6:32Speaker 3: They're going to see who comes in Arbajack guy maybe,
- 6:35Speaker 3: but I just think it's too big of a loss
- 6:38Speaker 3: on the back end, and that's so hard. He's he
- 6:41Speaker 3: has done so much for that team. He plays both
- 6:43Speaker 3: sides of the puck lane, is great at what he does.
- 6:46Speaker 3: But there's no more complete defenseman on that team, I
- 6:48Speaker 3: think than no Adopts and so for that reason, and
- 6:51Speaker 3: I think the way Tampa's just built, the way Vasilevsky's
- 6:53Speaker 3: playing right now Vezna like season, which I think he
- 6:57Speaker 3: might steal it from Sorokin here late in the season
- 6:59Speaker 3: the Vesna. But I gotta go Tampa in seven just
- 7:04Speaker 3: to give Montreal the Bell Center fighting chance because it
- 7:08Speaker 3: is so loud and incredibly insane in the best place
- 7:12Speaker 3: to have a playoff games in Montreal. So I think
- 7:14Speaker 3: they'll carry him to a couple wins. But I just
- 7:17Speaker 3: think Tampa will be too much in the end.
- 7:19Speaker 1: No better place to watch the playoff hockey game or
- 7:20Speaker 1: watch a hockey game period of the Montreal Nate.
- 7:22Speaker 2: What do you got?
- 7:24Speaker 5: I got to my former teams, I got Tampa and
- 7:26Speaker 5: seven as well. The big question mark for me for
- 7:30Speaker 5: Montreal in this and as the season goes a series
- 7:33Speaker 5: goes longer, is the depth of Montreal, like, is their
- 7:37Speaker 5: depth gonna be as good as Tampa?
- 7:39Speaker 4: Like?
- 7:39Speaker 5: I trust Tampa's depth players more than I do Montreal
- 7:43Speaker 5: because we've seen how much of a drop off there
- 7:45Speaker 5: is between their first line and everyone else. So on
- 7:48Speaker 5: Montreal that is. And I think the X factor and
- 7:52Speaker 5: the biggest edge that Tampa has is what Jad said
- 7:55Speaker 5: is Vasilevsky. I think that's the X factor at the
- 7:58Speaker 5: end of the day. So Tampa and seven. But this
- 8:01Speaker 5: is gonna be a knockout series. I think Montreal is
- 8:03Speaker 5: going to be a tough out and that place is
- 8:05Speaker 5: going to be rocking. I mean, I've played in Montreal
- 8:08Speaker 5: in the playoffs four and it's second to none.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Well said Flyers.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Penguins perhaps the best rivalry when it comes to first
- 8:15Speaker 1: round matches, Pennsylvania as they're calling it, cross state rivals
- 8:18Speaker 1: beating for the first time Pennsilmania.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it was credit Teut for that one.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Penguins won by the way of the season series four
- 8:23Speaker 1: to two way Storry back in twenty eighteen. The playoffs series,
- 8:27Speaker 1: they split their four games this season, and Philly won
- 8:29Speaker 1: both their games in the shootout thanks to Trevor Zegers
- 8:31Speaker 1: again Pittsburgh's firstlayoff appearance in four years.
- 8:33Speaker 2: It's Phillies first since twenty twenty.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Nate, It's been a great story for the Flyers again
- 8:37Speaker 1: as there were nine points out obviously went on a
- 8:40Speaker 1: great run.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Porter Martone has been a real story for them.
- 8:42Speaker 1: The nineteen year old rookie Tyson Forster they missed greatly,
- 8:45Speaker 1: perhaps their best goal scoring prospect fifty plus games he
- 8:47Speaker 1: was out. Added to that Zegras career season. Of course,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know what connecting me brings. Sanheimer's the line have
- 8:52Speaker 1: been very good in the back end, but Pittsburgh Crosby
- 8:54Speaker 1: back in the playoffs, Malcolm with him, and they've gotten
- 8:57Speaker 1: good contributions from their supporting lineup as well, the Brian
- 9:00Speaker 1: Russ and others. How do you see the shaping out?
- 9:02Speaker 1: It feels like Penguins and six. I'm gonna go Flyers
- 9:04Speaker 1: in seven.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Though, Oh Flyers in seven, I'll go, I'll go Pittsburgh.
- 9:11Speaker 5: I'll go Pittsburgh in seven. I wasn't gonna say six.
- 9:14Speaker 5: And I'm a former Flyer too, and I was watching
- 9:17Speaker 5: that game against Carolina and I could kind of feel
- 9:20Speaker 5: the you could feel the buzz in the excitement because
- 9:23Speaker 5: I mean I was on that team in twenty twenty
- 9:25Speaker 5: that was in the playoffs, the last time the Flyers
- 9:28Speaker 5: in it. So I think they're playing with houses money
- 9:31Speaker 5: right now, I really do. I think the way that
- 9:33Speaker 5: they played down the stretch, all the young pieces they have,
- 9:36Speaker 5: I mean Porter Martonami, he's like getting a deadline acquisition
- 9:40Speaker 5: for Philly. He really has been so. But at the
- 9:44Speaker 5: end of the day, I think that Pittsburgh with their
- 9:46Speaker 5: depth how good and obviously the two headed monster, three
- 9:49Speaker 5: headed monster, with all the guys they have, I think
- 9:52Speaker 5: they finish him off in seven quick thought.
- 9:55Speaker 1: By the way, on that shootout, jad, you saw that
- 9:57Speaker 1: Rod Britnenmoor, former Flyer great may have gifted talk a
- 10:00Speaker 1: little bit, did not put his top three guys by
- 10:02Speaker 1: the way out on that shootout. So I think he
- 10:03Speaker 1: was calling like, you know what, we got the point
- 10:06Speaker 1: go ahead, Philly, wait in your in. Let's not get
- 10:08Speaker 1: this down to Flyers and Aps, which the Flyers to
- 10:10Speaker 1: beat the Aps anyways, but nice, nice job.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I brought the butt go ahead.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Jity, hey, Philly, there ain't no three on three and
- 10:17Speaker 3: shootout in playoffs boys gets you ass is really? I
- 10:22Speaker 3: tell you what I am only keeping this somewhat close
- 10:26Speaker 3: because of Dan Ladar. Otherwise, this is an absolute boat
- 10:30Speaker 3: race by Pittsburgh in round one. The only thing that
- 10:33Speaker 3: could derail this is if goaltending Skinner or she Loves
- 10:38Speaker 3: falls flat on their face.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Because former teammates she loves Philly.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Philly has the clear edge in goaltending. But that is
- 10:46Speaker 3: where it stops. Everywhere else is going to be the
- 10:50Speaker 3: battle tested, veteran group in Pittsburgh. A lot of guys
- 10:54Speaker 3: on that Philly team do not have playoff experience. Mister mottone,
- 10:57Speaker 3: mister potomatone, NHL seems easy to you. Wait till the
- 11:01Speaker 3: fucking NHL playoffs, kid, Wait because now now everybody's clued
- 11:07Speaker 3: in on you, now that you've gotten your seven games.
- 11:09Speaker 3: He's very I love what he brings to this team,
- 11:12Speaker 3: and I think he's a he's a he's a future
- 11:15Speaker 3: top six for a long time in the NHL. He's
- 11:17Speaker 3: a great player. But now that you've had these games
- 11:20Speaker 3: and the NHL seems easy, and you're gonna go play
- 11:23Speaker 3: a Sydney Crosby that's gonna bite your face off. Oh,
- 11:27Speaker 3: it's gonna be very interesting. So I think they're gonna
- 11:29Speaker 3: make it interesting. I think it's gonna be a good series,
- 11:31Speaker 3: great rivalry. It's gonna be nasty, dirty. I expect a
- 11:34Speaker 3: lot of fights in the first game and maybe bleeding
- 11:37Speaker 3: into the second game. But there's just way more experience
- 11:40Speaker 3: on that team, and I think in a seven game series,
- 11:42Speaker 3: I think they will pull it out. And unless Dan
- 11:45Speaker 3: Vladar stands on his head and gives us a historic
- 11:49Speaker 3: first round playoff goaltending performance, I think it is Pittsburgh
- 11:54Speaker 3: in six.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Biggest concern for the Flyers, only the fourth team in
- 11:58Speaker 1: the last twenty five years to make the playoffs, wile having.
- 12:00Speaker 2: The league's worst power play.
- 12:02Speaker 1: But to JD's point, this is why the Penguin are
- 12:04Speaker 1: gonna lose their holes. They're goaltending team save percentage of
- 12:07Speaker 1: eight eighty seven since the Olympic break depends three point
- 12:10Speaker 1: five to six goals against per game is twenty sixth.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Goaltending's leaky.
- 12:15Speaker 1: That's why I think the Flyers will pull off the upisode.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We continue as your NHL playoff preview Bruins and Sabers.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Jady first playoff matchups is twenty ten. Boston won at
- 12:22Speaker 1: four to two. Bruins won three or four meetings the season,
- 12:25Speaker 1: two of them in overtime to the biggest surprise in
- 12:28Speaker 1: the NHL. We didn't mention the Bruins, but I got
- 12:29Speaker 1: who had thought one hundred points of this team. Marco
- 12:32Speaker 1: Sturm a quick retol in the fly props from the
- 12:34Speaker 1: entire Boston team postua ok to me, is a top
- 12:36Speaker 1: five player at least for the Heart Trophy, perhaps the season,
- 12:38Speaker 1: but no one can deny the mojo at Buffalo. I'm
- 12:41Speaker 1: thinking you're going Sabers and six go ahead to Mers.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Dude, I'm I honestly am going back and forth because
- 12:47Speaker 3: the more I think about this and the more I
- 12:49Speaker 3: kick this around. You got Jeremy Swayman, And here's how
- 12:53Speaker 3: I evaluate her. I know I evaluate a series. I
- 12:56Speaker 3: evaluate a series of like I go coaching. First. I
- 13:00Speaker 3: think Boston Sea as the edge with Marcos Sterm over
- 13:03Speaker 3: Lindy Rough. Say what you want, but I know some
- 13:06Speaker 3: stuff inner workings about Lenny Rough from the Buffalo Sabers.
- 13:09Speaker 3: I'm not going to get into it and I'm not
- 13:10Speaker 3: going to talk about it because I don't want to
- 13:13Speaker 3: throw anything anything under the bus. But I think Marc
- 13:15Speaker 3: os Serm's a better coach, they have the better goalie
- 13:18Speaker 3: I think in Jeremy Swaman, and Jeremy Swimming has that
- 13:21Speaker 3: game stealing capabilities. I think Buffalo has the edge up front.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I think Buffalo has the edge on the back end,
- 13:27Speaker 3: but I just don't It's gonna make it very interesting,
- 13:29Speaker 3: and I think Boston has some guys that have a
- 13:33Speaker 3: lot of playoff experience, and they have some veteran guys
- 13:36Speaker 3: that understand, and they play kind of a style that
- 13:38Speaker 3: can frustrate Buffalo because Buffalo wants to free wheel and
- 13:41Speaker 3: they're going to learn fairly quickly that you can't just
- 13:44Speaker 3: freewheel in the playoffs. And again, Boston had the edge
- 13:49Speaker 3: in season, but it's going to be a different game.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I'm still going with the Sabers and seven, but I
- 13:55Speaker 3: think it's going to be very interesting, and there might
- 13:57Speaker 3: be a little bit of fear at one point in
- 13:59Speaker 3: this playoff series where we're like, holy shit, Buffalo's down
- 14:02Speaker 3: like three to two and they're going back home and
- 14:05Speaker 3: they got to fucking wrangle this one back or they're sorry,
- 14:08Speaker 3: They're they're going to Boston. They got a winning game
- 14:09Speaker 3: in Boston, bring it back for seven, and they're fucking
- 14:11Speaker 3: doing in seven.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Donate Boston at seven. There it is maybe Boston and seven.
- 14:19Speaker 5: And Jay kind of explained all the reasons why. I mean,
- 14:22Speaker 5: you have swaymen, Marco Stern being the head coach, and
- 14:25Speaker 5: I think the big thing is the difference between Buffalo
- 14:29Speaker 5: and Boston is Buffalo, you know, and they had issues
- 14:33Speaker 5: down the stretch. Was their identity as a team. Where
- 14:36Speaker 5: Boston they know their identity, like they know exactly what
- 14:39Speaker 5: they are, who they're going to be, how they're going
- 14:41Speaker 5: to play. And I just think them bringing that and
- 14:44Speaker 5: willing like bring bringing their game to Buffalo over the
- 14:48Speaker 5: seven game series. I just think Buffalo, I don't know.
- 14:51Speaker 5: I just when I see both teams and I think
- 14:54Speaker 5: of a playoff team, I think of a playoff upset.
- 14:56Speaker 5: I think Boston is just it's prime to beat Buffalo
- 14:59Speaker 5: in the first round because of that reason. Because of
- 15:01Speaker 5: those reasons, Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 1: A lot of good vibes as Buffalo, but we'll see
- 15:05Speaker 1: Boston might indeed be the better team. Sends and Hurricanes
- 15:08Speaker 1: nate first of her playoff beating between these two franchises.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Carolina won two or three between the teams this season,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Ottawa winning the most recent matchup six three April fifth.
- 15:15Speaker 1: How about this story Brady could check committing he lost
- 15:17Speaker 1: his vision crazy momentarily after getting injured the other day
- 15:20Speaker 1: against the Andanders, but typical hockey player.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Good to go for the playoffs. I can't see, but
- 15:25Speaker 2: I think I can do it. It's interesting for Carolina
- 15:28Speaker 2: and Nate.
- 15:28Speaker 1: They've always been that team bb ploss and then come
- 15:30Speaker 1: playoff ten they can't send to the next level.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Is this year gonna be different? Rod Brindanmore's team, Bussy
- 15:35Speaker 2: and Nett, Freddie Anderson. We shall see.
- 15:37Speaker 1: And with regards to Ottawa again, I love the Travis
- 15:39Speaker 1: Greens teams played with a ton of momentum. We've said
- 15:41Speaker 1: all year if they had mediocre goalten, they would have
- 15:44Speaker 1: been in the playoffs long ago. Stut's look at Chuck
- 15:46Speaker 1: making that push. Jake Sanderson, by the way, I was
- 15:48Speaker 1: looking at numbers potentially for a lady bing four penalty
- 15:51Speaker 1: minutes in seventy six games. That's unheard of for a defenseman.
- 15:53Speaker 1: So a great job by Jake dew back of this team.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I'd love to see Ottawa win it, but I think
- 15:57Speaker 1: it's Carolina and six.
- 15:58Speaker 5: What do you say, Nate, I'm going to Ottawa in
- 16:01Speaker 5: seven Yeah, two, I am. I know.
- 16:06Speaker 2: JD laughed at me.
- 16:07Speaker 5: I know, but it's wow, Carolina, if they're playing anybody else,
- 16:13Speaker 5: I don't know. It's just when you have Ottawa's a
- 16:15Speaker 5: first round matchup, the way they've played the last month.
- 16:18Speaker 5: On top of that, I know that Allmark hasn't been
- 16:24Speaker 5: great in the playoffs, but I would take all Mark
- 16:27Speaker 5: over Bussy or Freddie Anderson in the playoffs when it
- 16:30Speaker 5: comes down to whoever's playing well. And I just I
- 16:33Speaker 5: look at the depth.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I look.
- 16:34Speaker 5: I look at matchups too. I look at you know,
- 16:36Speaker 5: I look at Stutsla going against different guys. I look
- 16:39Speaker 5: at those and I just see Ottawa edging them out
- 16:42Speaker 5: in a seven games series, just basically because I know
- 16:45Speaker 5: Audawa is going to try and punch him in the
- 16:46Speaker 5: mouth every single game. So I don't know if Carolina
- 16:50Speaker 5: can get over the hump. And I just think it's
- 16:52Speaker 5: just because of the nastiness. I just think Autawa is
- 16:54Speaker 5: going to bring that nastiness more than Carolina is and
- 16:56Speaker 5: that might be the difference.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's tough, tough.
- 17:01Speaker 4: No.
- 17:02Speaker 3: You look at Carolina's you know, last couple of playoffs,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and you know, you know, probably them and Tampa benefit
- 17:08Speaker 3: the most from not having the Florida Panthers. But I
- 17:11Speaker 3: think like, if there's a moment and there's a series
- 17:14Speaker 3: where somebody can win a Cup and make it to
- 17:16Speaker 3: the Cup finals, it's it's it's there's one series that
- 17:20Speaker 3: tests you, and this is gonna be the Carolina series
- 17:23Speaker 3: right away, because I think after if they can get
- 17:25Speaker 3: through Ottawa, I think they handle Philly or Pittsburgh fairly easy,
- 17:30Speaker 3: and then I think they handle whoever comes out of
- 17:32Speaker 3: the East. It might be Tampa, might be a Buffalo
- 17:35Speaker 3: who knows or boss, you know, whoever it is. I
- 17:37Speaker 3: think they can take care of them and they'll have
- 17:39Speaker 3: momentum going downhill. But this is the test. This is
- 17:42Speaker 3: the tough one and all Mark five and ten career
- 17:44Speaker 3: playoffs eight and just sub nine hundred say percentages not
- 17:48Speaker 3: great in the playoffs. We know what's happened in his
- 17:50Speaker 3: history with mental health. I don't know if it gets
- 17:53Speaker 3: very stressful, if he can relieve the tension and be
- 17:56Speaker 3: able to get himself back if things go awry, the
- 18:01Speaker 3: Brady could chuck things. Scares the shit out of me too.
- 18:03Speaker 3: That's the only reason why I was on Nate's side
- 18:06Speaker 3: until this Brady could chuck I thing and I saw him.
- 18:09Speaker 3: He snapped his head to the left and then his
- 18:11Speaker 3: eyesight went. So that's a neck thing. I think he's
- 18:14Speaker 3: got some weird head thing. I know he's gonna try
- 18:16Speaker 3: to play through it. We don't know how healthy he is,
- 18:19Speaker 3: and I know he's gonna be super excited. He might
- 18:21Speaker 3: get injured early on and then they're gonna be in trouble.
- 18:24Speaker 3: So I don't think Ottawa is gonna be able to
- 18:27Speaker 3: sustain the constant pressure from Carolina over a seven games series.
- 18:31Speaker 3: But I do think if there is a team to
- 18:33Speaker 3: challenge Carolina, I think it's this team. So but I'm
- 18:36Speaker 3: going Carolina and seven.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And arguably the best matchup of any playoffs series. This
- 18:43Speaker 1: is easy to be a Cup final matchup Dallas and
- 18:45Speaker 1: Minnesota JD. It's gonna be unbelievable.
- 18:47Speaker 2: They last bet in the playoffs in twenty anymore well
- 18:50Speaker 2: the fact that Dallas won that series in six games
- 18:52Speaker 2: few years ago. They split their four meetings this season.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Mira Hastens availability no update, and Rupe Hints is out
- 18:57Speaker 1: for at least the first two games I saw. Originally,
- 18:59Speaker 1: I was saying wild and seven just because I love
- 19:02Speaker 1: Quinn Hughes so much and was hoping that Cariill, Caprice
- 19:04Speaker 1: and the great people of Minnesota would have a team
- 19:06Speaker 1: that go deep.
- 19:07Speaker 2: You don't think it's gonna be a great series now
- 19:08Speaker 2: because of those injuries.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Well, I think I think Miro I sent you guys
- 19:13Speaker 3: that clip yesterday. It looks like an mcl so depending
- 19:17Speaker 3: it happened what a week and a half ago. Usually
- 19:19Speaker 3: it's two weeks if he misses any kind of games,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and they got to rely on Thomas Harley again, I
- 19:26Speaker 3: just don't think. I know, they have the depth and
- 19:29Speaker 3: they have the they have the experience now the last
- 19:33Speaker 3: three years, and if Jake Ottinger comes out, and he's
- 19:36Speaker 3: usually usually round one, Ottinger is the best Jake Ottinger
- 19:39Speaker 3: and he gets progressively worse the as the playoffs get
- 19:43Speaker 3: go on. But I just think Mini might have the
- 19:46Speaker 3: better goaltending right now. I think Mini decour if they
- 19:50Speaker 3: can stay healthy, and I think they're heavy up front
- 19:52Speaker 3: with that addition of McCarran, the fucking Felino brothers and McCarran.
- 19:57Speaker 3: You start them game one, shift one and you are
- 20:01Speaker 3: it is and they are gonna murder are people? Like,
- 20:05Speaker 3: just think like they are going to destroy some of
- 20:09Speaker 3: these guys on Dallas. So I just think without rupe
- 20:13Speaker 3: Hints and without Hayskin in, they might be in an
- 20:16Speaker 3: O two hole early and I think it's gonna be
- 20:18Speaker 3: tough to get out of it, and especially if they
- 20:21Speaker 3: lose any at home. If they if they lose one
- 20:23Speaker 3: of the first two at home, I think they're in
- 20:24Speaker 3: big trouble. And I for that reason, I have to
- 20:27Speaker 3: go Mini and seven. Well.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I went back and forth on this one too,
- 20:32Speaker 5: because I wanted to pick Dallas and and the more
- 20:34Speaker 5: I thought about it, so do.
- 20:35Speaker 3: I I thought they winning the Cup?
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 20:37Speaker 5: No, the more I thought about losing both those guys,
- 20:40Speaker 5: which are probably the most influential guys in their lineup,
- 20:43Speaker 5: and rope Hints too, I mean, he's this guy's a horse,
- 20:46Speaker 5: he flies, he's big, he plays in every situation for
- 20:50Speaker 5: their team. So that's a massive loss. And I think
- 20:54Speaker 5: that JD's right. I mean, if if Ottinger doesn't go well,
- 20:59Speaker 5: then what you know, where many they have both guys,
- 21:03Speaker 5: Like if it doesn't go well for one of them, yeah,
- 21:05Speaker 5: they have another guy. So I have the Wild and seven.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I do I think that they they have a little
- 21:10Speaker 5: more depth now that Dallas has those injuries.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Keep her going here.
- 21:15Speaker 1: As far as the playoff preview is concerned, how about
- 21:17Speaker 1: the Avalanche and the Kings. We're not going to do
- 21:19Speaker 1: that one because again we don't really know the status
- 21:21Speaker 1: for the cards to some of these teams. Here just
- 21:23Speaker 1: just to let you know, we are recording this Wednesday
- 21:25Speaker 1: morning before officially the results been done. But the foreshadowing
- 21:30Speaker 1: about to say, but the Pillow fight JD. That is
- 21:32Speaker 1: the Pacific. I mean, it's exciting.
- 21:34Speaker 7: Now.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Edmonton's thinking Cup. We do know Anaheim is in
- 21:37Speaker 1: the postseason first time. This is twenty eighteen, and the
- 21:39Speaker 1: John Tortorella boosts the Vegas Golden Knights. I know the
- 21:42Speaker 1: division has been a little blonkey, so to speak, But
- 21:45Speaker 1: what do you just make of it overall and how
- 21:46Speaker 1: things are gonna go down.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I think Vegas will end up securing the top spot,
- 21:50Speaker 3: and I think it's gonna come down to it's on.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I think it's gonna come down to Anaheim in LA
- 21:56Speaker 3: and if we get a goddamn Edmonton versus Los Angeles
- 22:00Speaker 3: Kings again, which I think is going to happen for
- 22:02Speaker 3: some weird reason. I think Ducks are gonna fall into
- 22:04Speaker 3: the wild card two spot. I am gonna fucking puke
- 22:08Speaker 3: my guts out, and I'm gonna go fist fight everybody
- 22:10Speaker 3: down at the NHL off.
- 22:11Speaker 8: You're gonna ken Holland specifically, you're gonna go after Oh
- 22:15Speaker 8: I just want, like, what this If this happens and
- 22:18Speaker 8: they play again for the fifth straight season, there needs
- 22:20Speaker 8: to be Me and Nate were talking about it before.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Either the points system needs to change or we need
- 22:25Speaker 3: to go we need to change the playoff form. And
- 22:26Speaker 3: I understand we want rivalries, but nobody wants this because
- 22:29Speaker 3: Edmonton's gonna steam roll them again. And then we're gonna
- 22:32Speaker 3: end up being like, oh la, what is where does
- 22:35Speaker 3: l A go from here? Kope's retired. It's like, just
- 22:37Speaker 3: let it. But you know, in hindsight, when you look
- 22:40Speaker 3: at it, you're like, well, l A is either gonna
- 22:43Speaker 3: get They're either gonna get Colorado or they're gonna get Edmint.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Nate and listen, we love the Kings Colorado, but Nate,
- 22:52Speaker 1: they're fucus fewest regulation wins in hockey history to make
- 22:57Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 22:57Speaker 2: That come on, dude.
- 22:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's gonna be that that points system.
- 23:02Speaker 5: It's either points or the one through eight playoff format.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Because JD's right as much as much as funny as
- 23:09Speaker 5: it is that they're playing each other, that could be
- 23:11Speaker 5: playing each other again.
- 23:12Speaker 3: They want five years in a row, but let's let's
- 23:15Speaker 3: change it up.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I want Colorado. We don't want to I don't
- 23:18Speaker 2: want David.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's it's got to change.
- 23:22Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 23:23Speaker 5: I I think when I look at this and I
- 23:25Speaker 5: see this division, I I mean, and who I think.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Anaheim has Nashville last two playing so I mean, and
- 23:32Speaker 5: they're not playing well. So this for sure, this is
- 23:35Speaker 5: gonna happen to l A, LA Edmonton, l A Edmonton.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Book it. If there's if Anaheim. If Anaheim gets Colorado,
- 23:43Speaker 3: that's kind of an interesting one. They're kind of like
- 23:45Speaker 3: a high flying free wheeling. That could be a tough
- 23:48Speaker 3: matchup for Colorado more so than l A. Because they're
- 23:50Speaker 3: not gonna so loose. Anaheim doesn't give a fuck. They're
- 23:53Speaker 3: just gonna go try to score seven goals and give
- 23:56Speaker 3: up eight and maybe get nine. I think it's gonna
- 23:59Speaker 3: be it's gonna be an exciting first round if it's
- 24:01Speaker 3: there and he can steal you games. He's been bad,
- 24:05Speaker 3: but he can if he picks it up. He looks tired,
- 24:07Speaker 3: but yeah, no, I'm with you. But I think it's
- 24:10Speaker 3: gonna be I think it's gonna be Vegas is gonna
- 24:12Speaker 3: get Utah, And I think I think it'll be Edmonton,
- 24:18Speaker 3: La Gosh so bad.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Where if Vegas gets Utah, that's gonna be a sneaky,
- 24:24Speaker 5: really hot, serious tough suits.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I watched Utah last night. They look very good.
- 24:29Speaker 3: They're so fast, they're humming. Yeah, and Vanelica's incredible.
- 24:35Speaker 2: One thought of the oilers. By the way, Leon Drysalis
- 24:37Speaker 2: packs and not yet confirmed for the start of the series,
- 24:39Speaker 2: but we'll see what happens there, all right.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Guys like Nate Thompson Jason Murs are no strangers to
- 24:44Speaker 1: coaches who can be hard asses, who can be tough,
- 24:45Speaker 1: who can be soft, et cetera. So when Rick Bonus
- 24:47Speaker 1: took over the Columbus Blue Jackets, you saw the Bonus bump.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Clearly a guy who's been beloved in the game in
- 24:52Speaker 1: his early seventies, he got the call on his boats
- 24:54Speaker 1: that took him about ten seconds to say yes and Nate,
- 24:57Speaker 1: we saw the bump there. For Columbus team played much
- 25:00Speaker 1: better Harvard down the stretch. The last thirteen games is undeniable.
- 25:02Speaker 1: The team was terrible, and Rick Bona buried his team
- 25:05Speaker 1: publicly called them out in a way that was very
- 25:07Speaker 1: unusual to see in professional sports, questioning their character.
- 25:10Speaker 2: When he was asked what happened? Because what got hard?
- 25:13Speaker 1: And they didn't want to push through me because I
- 25:14Speaker 1: don't know if I'll be back next year, but I
- 25:15Speaker 1: would change the culture of this team.
- 25:17Speaker 2: What do you make of him being that passionate and
- 25:19Speaker 2: that outspoken.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I loved it. I loved every second of it. I
- 25:25Speaker 5: thought it was I thought it was great. I think
- 25:28Speaker 5: the fact that he he he talks about how much
- 25:31Speaker 5: they don't hate to lose like that, that to me
- 25:35Speaker 5: jumped out, like you have to you have to be
- 25:37Speaker 5: so mad every time you lose, And he said, he
- 25:39Speaker 5: said it. He said that they just weren't they didn't
- 25:41Speaker 5: care enough about losing. And I know that sounds a
- 25:44Speaker 5: little confusing to some, but there is there. You You
- 25:47Speaker 5: you gotta hate to lose more than you like to win,
- 25:50Speaker 5: and that will get you somewhere, and I think for
- 25:53Speaker 5: the Columbus Blue Jackets, they realize that, all right, there
- 25:56Speaker 5: is another level to making the playoffs. You have to
- 25:59Speaker 5: reach another another, like I said, another level you have
- 26:03Speaker 5: to you have to dig in and and I loved
- 26:06Speaker 5: how emotional and how.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 5: I mean, I love how you mentioned they're lucky there
- 26:11Speaker 5: wasn't practice the next day too. I thought that was great.
- 26:15Speaker 3: No, no group of guys has ever dodged a backskate
- 26:19Speaker 3: like the Columbus Blue Jackets did this year. And honestly,
- 26:23Speaker 3: you know, looking at that, I kind of laughed a
- 26:25Speaker 3: little bit last night when I watched it, because you know,
- 26:27Speaker 3: he's like kind of sniffling and like you can see
- 26:29Speaker 3: the emotion and oh yeah, and I do have that
- 26:32Speaker 3: when I get very angry and emotional, like it's like
- 26:34Speaker 3: hard to control bacteers because you you care so much,
- 26:37Speaker 3: but you're also like I'm giving you all. And that's
- 26:40Speaker 3: the one thing you hear about Rick Bonus is like
- 26:42Speaker 3: he loves his teammate, the team he's coaching, He loves
- 26:45Speaker 3: the guys. He wants to help, he wants to take
- 26:47Speaker 3: care of, he wants to make you better. But don't
- 26:50Speaker 3: fuck him because if you fuck him and you somebody
- 26:53Speaker 3: that's like that, like very empathetic, you can see he's
- 26:57Speaker 3: empathetic when you mess with somebody like that like myself,
- 27:02Speaker 3: and I recognize that it hurts ten times more than
- 27:06Speaker 3: anybody else. So he is so deeply hurt by that
- 27:10Speaker 3: that he wanted to like murder these guys and murder
- 27:13Speaker 3: him out of love. And if I'm the Toronto Maple Leafs,
- 27:16Speaker 3: I'm looking at that and I am calling him tomorrow.
- 27:20Speaker 3: And if I am looking for a coach, I think
- 27:23Speaker 3: Rick Bonus is at the top of my list after
- 27:25Speaker 3: that speech, whether Columbus, anybody, I'm calling him because that
- 27:29Speaker 3: level of care from a coach to players. You got
- 27:33Speaker 3: to give that a shot in some respect because what
- 27:36Speaker 3: he did for this team. And you're right, Nate, it's it.
- 27:40Speaker 3: And you know that having played in the playoffs and
- 27:43Speaker 3: you know, been in the NHL for a long time,
- 27:46Speaker 3: it is hard to win. And as you get closer
- 27:49Speaker 3: to the playoffs, it gets harder. It gets harder, it
- 27:51Speaker 3: gets harder, and you got to keep elevating your game
- 27:53Speaker 3: and then once the playoffs sit, you gott elevate your
- 27:55Speaker 3: game more. I go back to the Philly game last night.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Garnet Hathaway. They're they're firmly in the playoffs. Garnet Hathaway,
- 28:02Speaker 3: Nick Steeler. These guys are blocking one time, off the back,
- 28:05Speaker 3: off the stomach. That is buy and that is what
- 28:08Speaker 3: it takes to make the playoffs. When they're firmly and
- 28:10Speaker 3: they don't need to do anything. Brian Bouche is on
- 28:12Speaker 3: the call going like fucking stop blocking shots. He's yelling
- 28:15Speaker 3: on the call, what are these guys doing? Stop blocking shots?
- 28:18Speaker 3: But that's what it takes to Rick Bonus, kudos to you.
- 28:21Speaker 3: I loved it. I love what he did. You see
- 28:24Speaker 3: the emotion, the raw intensity from him and just the
- 28:27Speaker 3: love that he has for his team. So I'd be
- 28:29Speaker 3: fucking calling him if I'm a team to bring him
- 28:31Speaker 3: on board. And there's a reason he's been a coach
- 28:32Speaker 3: for so long. But yeah, they survived the greatest bag
- 28:36Speaker 3: skate of all time because he would have Torrist strip
- 28:39Speaker 3: off them.
- 28:39Speaker 1: One coaching thought, we don't need to get into but
- 28:41Speaker 1: just happy trails and good luck to Avalanche coach Jared
- 28:43Speaker 1: Bedner did not accompany the team for their season ending
- 28:46Speaker 1: road trip through Alberta. Puck to the face in the face,
- 28:50Speaker 1: suffering facial factors and a corneal aberration. Show us some
- 28:53Speaker 1: nice battle scars. When Colorado starts to playoffs, Chief had
- 28:56Speaker 1: that plate fall in his head. So we suck Greig
- 28:58Speaker 1: Brupie stuff, man, these coaches are pretty tough.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Kid Bedner, Eh, he's ready speaking.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Of tough guys.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Coming up after this NHL unscripted Nick Kipriroos, who absolute
- 29:07Speaker 1: tough comany came to the NHL. He's got stories from
- 29:09Speaker 1: his time in the league and also his thoughts what
- 29:11Speaker 1: should happen with the mayple Leafs and Austin Matthews.
- 29:13Speaker 2: That's coming up next.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Right after this, our next guest collected forty six goals,
- 29:31Speaker 1: ninety points, most of portly one and ten penny minutes,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and four hundred and forty two NHL games with the
- 29:36Speaker 1: Capitals shout up to the Whalers, Rangers and the Mayple Leafs.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Won the Stanley Cup of the Rangers in ninety four,
- 29:42Speaker 1: and since retiring in ninety seven, has become a prominent
- 29:44Speaker 1: voice in hockey media, most notably on the Real Kuiper
- 29:47Speaker 1: and Born Shawn Sportsnet five ninety of the Fan it
- 29:50Speaker 1: is Nick Caprio's Nick great to see you again, man.
- 29:52Speaker 1: I was just back in Toronto for the finale Stars
- 29:55Speaker 1: and Leaves, which, as you know, is a meaningless game,
- 29:57Speaker 1: but something that was of meaning. We're seeing our buddy
- 29:59Speaker 1: Joe Bowen his final home game is the voice at
- 30:02Speaker 1: least forty four games emostly overcome a raucous ovation. We'll
- 30:06Speaker 1: get to the hockey in the plaids and all that,
- 30:08Speaker 1: but I want your best Joe Bowen story for me.
- 30:11Speaker 7: Oh gosh, best Joe Bowen story. I mean, listen, when
- 30:17Speaker 7: you're a journeyman like me, man.
- 30:18Speaker 6: You just suck up to everybody but Joe.
- 30:22Speaker 7: Joe Joe obviously you know from from my days of
- 30:26Speaker 7: starting at the NHL level and him already established and
- 30:30Speaker 7: calling the great rap around goal by Doug Gilmour on
- 30:35Speaker 7: Curtis Joseph. I mean, it's the one thing that you know,
- 30:39Speaker 7: especially in today's day and age, when you know you're
- 30:42Speaker 7: hard pressed to find a guy on the same team
- 30:45Speaker 7: for more than five seven years, ten years, to watch
- 30:49Speaker 7: Joe do it for forty plus years as a Toronto
- 30:51Speaker 7: may belief. Certainly not surprised at the accolades right now
- 30:58Speaker 7: going on for Joe and the Ovation that he had
- 31:02Speaker 7: the other night. From from your aim, Joe's a good
- 31:07Speaker 7: guy and he's a Leafer for life, and I think
- 31:10Speaker 7: it was great to see the fans recognize.
- 31:12Speaker 3: That amazing career by him. And Nick, you're in that
- 31:16Speaker 3: Toronto media market and you have some of the best
- 31:20Speaker 3: insight and knowledge. But for you, kind of what's your
- 31:22Speaker 3: impression right now with the Maple Leafs after this? You
- 31:25Speaker 3: know you can call a disaster season And I just
- 31:27Speaker 3: saw they hired a search party for the new GM three.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Keith Kelly, what do you make of all that? And
- 31:32Speaker 3: everything surrounding the Toronto.
- 31:34Speaker 7: Maple Leafs so well, Jason's quiet here. We might have
- 31:38Speaker 7: to sign up a search party to find the search
- 31:40Speaker 7: party right now. But all kidding aside, very unstable right
- 31:47Speaker 7: now in the organization from top to bottom, and they're
- 31:50Speaker 7: looking for a new leader. Brad Tree living out. Of course,
- 31:53Speaker 7: we don't know what's going to happen to Craig Breuby.
- 31:58Speaker 7: Lots of talk about Austin Matthews future and where he's
- 32:02Speaker 7: going to be in a couple of years and how
- 32:04Speaker 7: quickly does a new guy address it if not the
- 32:07Speaker 7: CEO Keith Pelly. A lot of questions right now that
- 32:12Speaker 7: people are asking that don't normally follow the end of
- 32:16Speaker 7: the season. So these are tough times for Toronto Maple Leafs,
- 32:20Speaker 7: the organization, but more importantly, they're fans who had to
- 32:25Speaker 7: endure a very frustrating season coming off less than twelve
- 32:29Speaker 7: months of winning an Atlantic Division title and contending for
- 32:34Speaker 7: a Stanley Cup.
- 32:37Speaker 5: Yeah, Nick, I mean they have they have their work
- 32:39Speaker 5: cutout for him, that's for sure. In this offseason, whoever
- 32:42Speaker 5: that may be that they hire with the playoffs looming,
- 32:46Speaker 5: Is there a team or teams you're looking forward to
- 32:49Speaker 5: watching and seeing what transpires as the playoffs is about
- 32:52Speaker 5: to start.
- 32:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I think there's obviously some great storylines, Nate. And
- 32:58Speaker 7: you know, however, we feel about Colorado or Tampa Bay.
- 33:07Speaker 7: When was the last time we could sit there and
- 33:09Speaker 7: look at sixteen teams in the Stanley Cup playoffs in
- 33:13Speaker 7: the first round and go, okay, how many could run
- 33:15Speaker 7: this thing?
- 33:16Speaker 6: Really?
- 33:16Speaker 7: I mean, do we really still believe it's three or four?
- 33:19Speaker 7: Or do we look at the goaltending right now and go,
- 33:22Speaker 7: oh whoa hold on for a second before we get
- 33:24Speaker 7: it to Colorado here or Vegas or Dallas. You know,
- 33:31Speaker 7: is Buffalo now in the mix legitimately, and I think
- 33:36Speaker 7: we can all answer yes, you know from my perspective. Anyways,
- 33:39Speaker 7: so we got seven eight teams. The Montreal Canadians. Could
- 33:44Speaker 7: they possibly be in a position like Patrick Wall was
- 33:49Speaker 7: many moons ago to win the Stanley Cup the last
- 33:52Speaker 7: time Canada won one in ninety three with their goaltending,
- 33:58Speaker 7: which looks pretty darn good right now as well. Listen,
- 34:03Speaker 7: it's white open. I think it's going to be a
- 34:07Speaker 7: great watch moving forward. The Boston Bruins I find very
- 34:11Speaker 7: intriguing because of course this is a team that should
- 34:15Speaker 7: be on the outside looking in. They got rid of
- 34:19Speaker 7: Brad Marsham. That was a turning point of rebuilding, and
- 34:23Speaker 7: it's like, hold on for a second. I mean, they're
- 34:26Speaker 7: in the they're in the mix here. Swainmon's had a
- 34:29Speaker 7: great rebound year, and some some kids that you didn't
- 34:33Speaker 7: necessarily thought you could could compete and contribute, like Minton
- 34:37Speaker 7: off the Leaf trade last year, all of a sudden
- 34:40Speaker 7: making some noise here. So it's gonna be a fun watch,
- 34:44Speaker 7: no question.
- 34:45Speaker 2: That's just a memory lane right now.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Kipper rookie season in Washington, the Capital's fire coach Brian
- 34:50Speaker 1: Murray replaced him with his brother Terry.
- 34:56Speaker 3: As a rookie too.
- 34:59Speaker 7: I think do the double take. You know, it's like,
- 35:04Speaker 7: you know, the crazy thing about it was that they're
- 35:10Speaker 7: very different guys, right, and Brian was like the motivator,
- 35:15Speaker 7: you know, the chirper that like, he was the ultimate
- 35:18Speaker 7: tough guy. If if there were coaches were allowed to
- 35:22Speaker 7: fight back, then I take Brian Murray, you know. And
- 35:27Speaker 7: I wouldn't take his brother Terry, for sure, he'd be
- 35:30Speaker 7: the last guy I picked. But Terry very methodical and
- 35:36Speaker 7: tactical and Brian Moore of a raw, raw raye, you know,
- 35:40Speaker 7: motivational guy. But like you know, we were asking, like,
- 35:46Speaker 7: you know, does your mom know about this, you know,
- 35:49Speaker 7: replacing you know, her other son with with yougiving right
- 35:54Speaker 7: giving it was. It was a strange one, but uh,
- 35:59Speaker 7: you know, we when Terry came in, we were able
- 36:01Speaker 7: to regroup there and we took the Washington Capitals to
- 36:05Speaker 7: their first conference final in their history. Some good times.
- 36:10Speaker 7: John Druce Drus on the loose. You guys are too
- 36:13Speaker 7: young to maybe remember that. Yeah, it was fun times
- 36:17Speaker 7: in Washington, and I like Washington. I know they didn't
- 36:20Speaker 7: make the playoffs.
- 36:21Speaker 3: This year, but five games.
- 36:24Speaker 7: I like where they're headed, and I like their goaltending
- 36:27Speaker 7: led by by Logan.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Five more games and I think Washington made it in
- 36:32Speaker 3: the playoffs there, I think if they had a little
- 36:34Speaker 3: bit more time. But I want to talk about you
- 36:37Speaker 3: winning the Cup ninety four. You mentioned it before how
- 36:41Speaker 3: the cup kind of got lost and that's how Phil
- 36:45Speaker 3: Pritchard ended up becoming the keeper of the Cup. Have
- 36:48Speaker 3: you ever talked to Phil Pritchard about that and and
- 36:51Speaker 3: what kind of exactly happened.
- 36:53Speaker 7: Yeah, in that in that moment, Jase, there's there's like
- 36:56Speaker 7: there's three or four different stories on how the real one.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Here, give us, give us the juicy to the best
- 37:05Speaker 3: job ever.
- 37:05Speaker 7: The worst one was Joey Kosher welding the cup back
- 37:09Speaker 7: on the base, you know, I mean, Joey, I don't know.
- 37:13Speaker 7: I don't know what what grade you got in industrial
- 37:17Speaker 7: arts in grade seven or if you even were paying
- 37:20Speaker 7: attention in a welding class. But you can't send the
- 37:24Speaker 7: cup back home to Montreal with like air bubbles all
- 37:29Speaker 7: over it.
- 37:30Speaker 3: You know you can't.
- 37:33Speaker 7: So you know, that's when the Hockey Hall of Fame
- 37:36Speaker 7: and the NHL and that I don't know. There was
- 37:39Speaker 7: like a guy like one hundred years old who's been
- 37:42Speaker 7: you know, maintaining the cup, and he almost had a
- 37:45Speaker 7: heart attack. We killed the poor guy almost, you know,
- 37:48Speaker 7: when he saw the cup come back. But that's that
- 37:51Speaker 7: was the last year that it went unsupervised. And and
- 37:56Speaker 7: you know, Phil should be thanking me because we gave
- 37:58Speaker 7: him a job for life, you know after that. But
- 38:03Speaker 7: fun times for sure. Uh, the biggest chick magnet in
- 38:07Speaker 7: the history of the world is that Stanley Cup. I
- 38:12Speaker 7: wasn't married at the time, so I took full advantage.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yes, after dark, that's the stories we did. Go ahead.
- 38:21Speaker 5: All I have is a visual of Joey Kosher welding
- 38:25Speaker 5: the cup together. Yeah, yeah, goggles the whole thing.
- 38:33Speaker 3: That's that's so good.
- 38:35Speaker 5: I want to go back again. You win the Cup
- 38:37Speaker 5: with the Rangers ninety four and Mike Keenan's a head coach,
- 38:39Speaker 5: and I'm sure you have a million Mike Keenan stories.
- 38:43Speaker 5: But he leaves for Saint Louis after you guys wins.
- 38:45Speaker 5: How how crazy did things get after that?
- 38:52Speaker 6: Really crazy for sure.
- 38:54Speaker 7: But you know, both of you guys have been around
- 38:57Speaker 7: the game long enough that like, you know, whether you're
- 39:00Speaker 7: in a market like New York or l A, you know,
- 39:03Speaker 7: Florida or whatever the case is, that you know there's
- 39:08Speaker 7: outside noises and in some markets bigger than others. In
- 39:11Speaker 7: this particular instance in New York, the noise was just
- 39:15Speaker 7: off the charts, like Dephanie, and you just had to
- 39:20Speaker 7: shut it out at the time. And this was still
- 39:22Speaker 7: while we were trying to win the Stanley Cup. This
- 39:24Speaker 7: wasn't after. This was before when we heard all types
- 39:29Speaker 7: of noise about Keenan negotiating a contract with Detroit and
- 39:34Speaker 7: the fighting between our current general manager at the time
- 39:38Speaker 7: was Neil Smith and Mike and how the ownership at
- 39:44Speaker 7: the time, which I believe was paramount, was all involved
- 39:48Speaker 7: in all of this. And we had to stay on
- 39:51Speaker 7: the straight and narrow because we know that there's distractions.
- 39:55Speaker 7: You guys have lived it right, and it could come
- 39:58Speaker 7: from one individual in the room, It could come from
- 40:03Speaker 7: the manager jurial side, it could come from you know,
- 40:07Speaker 7: all all walks of life here. You got to you
- 40:09Speaker 7: gotta find a way to keep it together. And thank
- 40:11Speaker 7: god we had guys like Mark Messler Kevin Lowe to
- 40:14Speaker 7: sit there and go, don't worry about that. What matters
- 40:18Speaker 7: is how we control our behavior on and off the ice.
- 40:23Speaker 6: But you know, it was nuts.
- 40:25Speaker 7: It was nuts, and I think it's, you know, a
- 40:28Speaker 7: reminder that you know, just control what you can control.
- 40:33Speaker 7: And that's what I think most of us as pros
- 40:36Speaker 7: have tried to live by and some do it better
- 40:38Speaker 7: than others. And you know, for that there might be
- 40:42Speaker 7: more longevity as long as your head's in the right place.
- 40:46Speaker 6: But it was absolutely nuts then, and Keenan liked it
- 40:50Speaker 6: that way.
- 40:50Speaker 7: Like you know, he brought a lot of it upon himself,
- 40:55Speaker 7: and I think he was okay with that because he
- 40:58Speaker 7: thought that it brought edge out of people. You know,
- 41:01Speaker 7: it brought it can bring out the best, it can
- 41:04Speaker 7: bring out the worst of you. But he was lucky
- 41:07Speaker 7: he had great character. You know, we had great character
- 41:10Speaker 7: from top to bottom. And you guys have been on
- 41:12Speaker 7: successful teams and when you have great character, it can
- 41:16Speaker 7: come over, It can overcome a lot of things. And
- 41:21Speaker 7: I'm just still blessed. It's been over thirty years, you
- 41:24Speaker 7: win the cup, it still feels like yesterday. I'm gonna
- 41:26Speaker 7: watch the cup be presented as you guys will, and
- 41:30Speaker 7: it's a great feeling knowing exactly how that feels when
- 41:34Speaker 7: you see someone lifted this spring again.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Yeah, the camaraderie when you win those kind of things
- 41:40Speaker 3: is just lifelong. And you mentioned mess and Moose and
- 41:45Speaker 3: you know what, an amazing leader but also one of
- 41:47Speaker 3: the dirtiest motherfuckers around. Yeah, you had a tunnel penalty minutes,
- 41:51Speaker 3: but you're probably looking down the bench and being like
- 41:53Speaker 3: this guy just he's getting thrown roses at him. But
- 41:57Speaker 3: he is a dirty guy in the ice. And I
- 41:59Speaker 3: say that in the most endearing way because he played
- 42:02Speaker 3: the game hard. Like, at what point did you realize, like,
- 42:06Speaker 3: oh man, this guy, the edge that he has in
- 42:09Speaker 3: dragging the team into the fight is just next level.
- 42:13Speaker 7: So I go back to one night in Dallas and
- 42:19Speaker 7: it's getting goofy and greasy out there, and there's Me,
- 42:22Speaker 7: Joey Kosher, Jeff bu Ka Boom, and there's a few
- 42:25Speaker 7: of us, and like, I'm like, I gotta fight. I
- 42:30Speaker 7: gotta fight one of the big monkeys out here for sure, right,
- 42:35Speaker 7: and like messed up steps up and he goes, Okay,
- 42:39Speaker 7: stop it. We're not going after those guys. Let's go
- 42:44Speaker 7: after they're good players, Okay. One of the first shifts
- 42:52Speaker 7: he goes back out there, he catches Mike Madano, one
- 42:56Speaker 7: of the greatest American hockey players ever to play the game.
- 43:02Speaker 7: He catches him straddling the blue line, knocks him out
- 43:07Speaker 7: cold out, and we're like.
- 43:12Speaker 6: Did he just do that? And it's like, Yep, he
- 43:15Speaker 6: just did that. He just walked the walk.
- 43:17Speaker 7: Don't go after those guys that play four minutes a night,
- 43:21Speaker 7: go after their best player. And guess what I'm gonna
- 43:25Speaker 7: do it. So, I don't know if you've ever seen that.
- 43:27Speaker 7: The video of Mike Madado being stretched out of the
- 43:33Speaker 7: game and then getting put into an ambulance and the
- 43:37Speaker 7: camera on the jumbo tron is following through the zamboni.
- 43:42Speaker 4: And then they go to lift them up and they
- 43:45Speaker 4: drop them. He's got a neck guard on, he's barely
- 43:51Speaker 4: moved and he just just they.
- 43:54Speaker 6: Just drop them.
- 43:56Speaker 7: And it's like, you know, now you've been dropped twice,
- 43:59Speaker 7: one by Mark Messier and the other one by by
- 44:02Speaker 7: an ambulance.
- 44:04Speaker 6: You know, guy, So I mean, that's that's Mark. That's Mark.
- 44:10Speaker 6: It's like, just don't say it, do it if you
- 44:13Speaker 6: have to. Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 1: It certainly was a great leader, as was Doug Gilmour,
- 44:17Speaker 1: who we had on at Amazon Prime of Money for
- 44:19Speaker 1: the finale of course you're with Dougie in ninety three.
- 44:21Speaker 1: And I asked Killer, I said, you know, is ever
- 44:23Speaker 1: a day go by? Pel though mentioned ninety three, He's like, Nope,
- 44:26Speaker 1: at some point somebody.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Will see me, like hey, wrap around on Cooze. I'll
- 44:28Speaker 2: never forget it.
- 44:29Speaker 1: What I want to ask you about, though, is you
- 44:30Speaker 1: love talking movies, films, TV. The early days of HBO,
- 44:34Speaker 1: Nick was Larry Standers show in OZ and you appear
- 44:37Speaker 1: on the show artless.
- 44:38Speaker 2: I want your best Robert wools stories.
- 44:42Speaker 7: Yeah, like really good guy, really good guy, and uh,
- 44:47Speaker 7: you know they had called I don't know if they
- 44:50Speaker 7: called the least or someone got a hold of somebody,
- 44:53Speaker 7: but they called me up and said would you be
- 44:54Speaker 7: interesting coming down and and uh and having a short
- 44:59Speaker 7: uh cameo on the show. We'll put you on the ice,
- 45:03Speaker 7: We'll have Robert represent you. And I'm like, sure, no problem.
- 45:08Speaker 7: But I absolutely like loved it. Like, you know, if
- 45:12Speaker 7: they would have called again, you know, no problem. I
- 45:16Speaker 7: would have tried to be a movie star at that point.
- 45:20Speaker 6: Of my career. But they were really good.
- 45:24Speaker 7: It was an episode that also featured the late Kobe
- 45:27Speaker 7: Bryant as well, So I mean we're linked in some capacity,
- 45:32Speaker 7: which is amazing. Apparently I did my my my on
- 45:37Speaker 7: I scene so well. They they made another scene at
- 45:40Speaker 7: the back end before me in a in a off
- 45:44Speaker 7: off my press conference, but apparently not good enough. The show,
- 45:49Speaker 7: I don't know, lasted three or four seasons. You know,
- 45:53Speaker 7: did I help cancel it?
- 45:54Speaker 5: I don't know. I'm a big HBO guys, So that's
- 46:04Speaker 5: and I remember that. I remember the show Are List.
- 46:06Speaker 5: I didn't watch it a lot, but I watched a
- 46:08Speaker 5: little bit. Your last season in Toronto was the same
- 46:13Speaker 5: season Dougie Gilmour was traded out of there. What was
- 46:17Speaker 5: the mood in Toronto after that? Because I know how
- 46:20Speaker 5: much everyone loves Doug Gilmore.
- 46:22Speaker 7: Yeah, kind of similar to Nate to to what movie
- 46:27Speaker 7: fans are thinking and feeling today, is that, you know,
- 46:30Speaker 7: once you trade Doug Gilmour, once he got moved to
- 46:34Speaker 7: New Jersey, it was like, Okay, what's next? Starting over?
- 46:39Speaker 7: You know, how far is the rebuild going to be?
- 46:44Speaker 7: You know, it wasn't just Doug Gilmore, it was Dave Ellett,
- 46:47Speaker 7: it was Kirk Muller, it was Dave done Like We
- 46:51Speaker 7: had a veteran laden team back then and they had
- 46:55Speaker 7: great success of course in conference finals earlier against Vancouver
- 47:02Speaker 7: and Los Angeles. The famous Gretzky hat trick in Maple
- 47:06Speaker 7: Leaf Gardens that that knocked them out, and that was
- 47:09Speaker 7: the difference between a Toronto Montreal final or not. But
- 47:15Speaker 7: you know, Doug's another guy right that was can walk
- 47:19Speaker 7: the walk, willing to say something and be the first
- 47:22Speaker 7: guy to want to go out there and.
- 47:24Speaker 6: Do it himself.
- 47:27Speaker 7: And well, it was kind of it was kind of tough.
- 47:31Speaker 7: They didn't want to pay him. Uh, there was a
- 47:34Speaker 7: changing of the guard and ownership Steve Stavros as well.
- 47:38Speaker 7: They had to cut cut the budget down to reflect
- 47:42Speaker 7: certain criterias on selling the team. You know, it's the
- 47:48Speaker 7: business side of it. Unfortunately as players we have to
- 47:52Speaker 7: see sometimes and deal with it. But that's that's life
- 47:56Speaker 7: a professional hockey, right.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it certainly is. And you know you talk about
- 48:00Speaker 3: legacy and guys that jumping back into the current NHL
- 48:04Speaker 3: with Connor McDavid, you know, entering these playoffs signs that
- 48:08Speaker 3: to your extension and we might have talked about it
- 48:10Speaker 3: when I was on your show about just the clock
- 48:13Speaker 3: starting now. For them, and do you kind of is
- 48:17Speaker 3: this a make or break year for them? Do they
- 48:20Speaker 3: have to win it? Or do you think it's still
- 48:21Speaker 3: one of those things where there's a couple of years
- 48:24Speaker 3: and where do you see that outlook with him and
- 48:26Speaker 3: the Edmonton Oilers.
- 48:27Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I don't know about just make or break
- 48:32Speaker 7: win the Stanley Cup or bust. Like I get the
- 48:35Speaker 7: theory of it, and I get the the type of
- 48:39Speaker 7: cliche it is right now, but I'm also a believer
- 48:43Speaker 7: of just not if you lose, but how you lose
- 48:47Speaker 7: and whether or not you can still hang your hat
- 48:49Speaker 7: on certain things of how close we were and we
- 48:54Speaker 7: know where that line is sometimes between winning and losing,
- 48:58Speaker 7: and it's I don't know if people can truly understand,
- 49:01Speaker 7: like what a redirect, the puck spinning the other way,
- 49:07Speaker 7: Like there's so many factors of outside of whether you
- 49:10Speaker 7: deserve to win or lose. I mean, there is just
- 49:13Speaker 7: fate sometimes and the bounce of a puckh redirect, you
- 49:21Speaker 7: name it. But like, if it doesn't appear to be
- 49:24Speaker 7: that type of loss for the Edmonton Oilers and one
- 49:27Speaker 7: that says that they are truly trending in the wrong direction,
- 49:33Speaker 7: then these guys like Connor McDavid, Austin Matthews, Quinn Hughes,
- 49:39Speaker 7: they have so much power and they know they have power.
- 49:44Speaker 7: And even in my day guys when we talk about
- 49:47Speaker 7: Messier's and Gilmore's and like, they knew they had power,
- 49:54Speaker 7: but not the power that they could just really dictate
- 49:59Speaker 7: like and even if they did have power came much
- 50:01Speaker 7: later in their careers. These guys are twenty five, twenty six,
- 50:04Speaker 7: twenty seven. They can completely control their fate. Quinn Hughes like,
- 50:10Speaker 7: come on the way he way the way he just
- 50:15Speaker 7: totally you know, I don't want to say ran Vancouver Show,
- 50:20Speaker 7: but put.
- 50:20Speaker 6: It in their court. You know I'm not coming back.
- 50:24Speaker 7: You know I'm not resigning. You got you can hang
- 50:28Speaker 7: me around here for two more years. But the pitcher
- 50:31Speaker 7: is not going to get any better.
- 50:34Speaker 6: What do they do? They move him right away.
- 50:37Speaker 7: So Connor could be in that position if he doesn't
- 50:41Speaker 7: like what he sees, if he feels like it's not
- 50:43Speaker 7: trending by the end of this season in the right direction,
- 50:47Speaker 7: he will have that power to say, boys, move me now,
- 50:52Speaker 7: move me later, but you're gonna move me.
- 50:54Speaker 6: And Austin's in the same situation.
- 50:56Speaker 5: Guys here in Toronto, kipper, where do you I mean,
- 51:01Speaker 5: touch on a quip? Where do you think that Connor
- 51:04Speaker 5: McDavid or Austin Matthews should end up if they don't
- 51:07Speaker 5: end up with their teams?
- 51:08Speaker 6: Like where where they at?
- 51:10Speaker 3: You know what he wants you to say, l A.
- 51:16Speaker 7: I think I think all those places are possible. And
- 51:20Speaker 7: to sit there definitively say one or the other. You know,
- 51:23Speaker 7: it's just us guessing or for some people hoping.
- 51:27Speaker 6: But you know they.
- 51:30Speaker 7: They study now right, they look. They'll look at how
- 51:34Speaker 7: many assets you have. They'll look at what kind of
- 51:36Speaker 7: help there is once I get there, They'll see where
- 51:39Speaker 7: the trajectory is are they you know, where's Drew Dowdy?
- 51:42Speaker 7: If it's la where is Drew Dowdy?
- 51:45Speaker 6: And all of this?
- 51:46Speaker 7: Uh Rank Clark is a is a great defenseman? Is
- 51:50Speaker 7: he the guy that's going to help me?
- 51:52Speaker 6: Now? With a Stanley cup?
- 51:54Speaker 7: See you can sit there and you can talk about taxes,
- 51:57Speaker 7: and you can talk about cost of living, you could
- 52:00Speaker 7: talk about you know, community, But like Conradate McDavid right now,
- 52:06Speaker 7: he doesn't care about any of that. He didn't care
- 52:08Speaker 7: about getting a raise. All he cares about is not
- 52:13Speaker 7: being one of those best players in the world to
- 52:16Speaker 7: never win that. Yeah, that's all he cares about.
- 52:20Speaker 3: He is.
- 52:21Speaker 6: It's it keeps him up at night. You know.
- 52:25Speaker 7: It has to with his behavior, his mannerism, his body language,
- 52:32Speaker 7: the fact that he didn't take one dime. Tell me
- 52:35Speaker 7: what superstar on our planet in any form of business, medical, field, entertainment, sports,
- 52:46Speaker 7: in the prime of their careers doesn't get a raise.
- 52:51Speaker 7: It's crazy, nuts, it's nuts. And yet he said, I
- 52:58Speaker 7: want to win so badly. I'm leaving it all on
- 53:00Speaker 7: the table for you guys to make me better around me.
- 53:03Speaker 7: And if he doesn't see that happening after this season,
- 53:07Speaker 7: then it's it's up to him to decide.
- 53:11Speaker 2: Last thought, we'll let you get out of here.
- 53:12Speaker 1: I saw Steve Simmons back at the game on Monday
- 53:15Speaker 1: and he's I said, I let you know the office.
- 53:16Speaker 1: He goes, well, I always come to the first in
- 53:18Speaker 1: the last game, and I said, oh, just in case
- 53:19Speaker 1: players want to take shots at you because something you
- 53:21Speaker 1: might have said about them. He said, well, they don't
- 53:23Speaker 1: read the papers anymore because these guys say they don't
- 53:25Speaker 1: even know.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Yeah, they do.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Because he goes back in the day they uston.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I said, well, give me the best example of a
- 53:29Speaker 1: player most confrontational.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Who's most upset? He said, Tye Domy. I would have
- 53:37Speaker 2: said it for you, Kipper, he said, tie Domey.
- 53:41Speaker 1: He wrote in the column, if you rearrange the letters
- 53:43Speaker 1: of his name, you get me idiot.
- 53:49Speaker 6: Hey, hey, good line.
- 53:52Speaker 7: Don't ever say that with him in the room. Buddy,
- 53:54Speaker 7: you're done, You're done, I'm telling you.
- 53:57Speaker 3: He said.
- 53:57Speaker 1: He walks in the next day and Darcy Tucker immediately
- 54:00Speaker 1: says he's here, and ty Doe he makes a b
- 54:03Speaker 1: line for Steve Simmons and immediately starts talking about the
- 54:05Speaker 1: etymology of his name Albanian descept blah blah.
- 54:08Speaker 2: And Steve goes to his credit. I listened.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I wren't because it ended up being a wonderful three
- 54:13Speaker 1: decade friendship ever since.
- 54:14Speaker 2: But it's a good lesson. Don't ever fuck with a
- 54:16Speaker 2: guy's name you don't know what it's about.
- 54:18Speaker 7: Right, listen, don't even don't even mess with Tye at all.
- 54:24Speaker 7: Just you know, unless you want to be in a
- 54:25Speaker 7: headlock for the next three hours. Okay, fun teammate, Uh,
- 54:32Speaker 7: just don't don't get into a pissing contest with him.
- 54:35Speaker 6: You will lose. I guarantee you you will lose.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Always.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Women listening to Nick Kippros, make sure to check out
- 54:42Speaker 1: Real Kipper and Board Sports that five nine in the
- 54:44Speaker 1: fan give my best adjustin.
- 54:45Speaker 2: It's great to reunite.
- 54:46Speaker 6: Man.
- 54:46Speaker 1: You've always been nice to be, always great voice when
- 54:48Speaker 1: it comes to hockey.
- 54:49Speaker 2: A wonderful career in fact, keep it going. Thanks so much.
- 54:51Speaker 7: They need no problem and Nate and Jason happy to
- 54:54Speaker 7: pass that media torch to you. Guys, I am this
- 54:58Speaker 7: close to retiring. Go get him, boys, go get.
- 55:02Speaker 3: Him the coffers. He's off riding offrom at the sunset.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Thanks buddy, all right, thanks.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Once again to Nick, Heiprio, Cinephile and sixty. Before I
- 55:19Speaker 1: get into it, Tuth, did you see the finale of
- 55:21Speaker 1: DTF Saint Louis And if so, what were your thoughts
- 55:23Speaker 1: on it?
- 55:24Speaker 9: Didn't love it? It was kind of I thought it.
- 55:26Speaker 9: It kind of was a letdown in the end. I
- 55:28Speaker 9: was totally taking the words.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Out of my mouth. I textedg erratic and I go
- 55:31Speaker 2: huge letdown. Goh yah, I was.
- 55:33Speaker 9: It was a letdown. I didn't like how it ended.
- 55:35Speaker 9: I felt like who the writer kind of didn't know
- 55:38Speaker 9: how to finish it up. And yeah, I mean it
- 55:42Speaker 9: had me for the first three four episodes and then
- 55:44Speaker 9: it kind of just got away from me.
- 55:46Speaker 3: But a for effort.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Episodes two and three outstanding. I just thought the final
- 55:51Speaker 1: episode completely devoid of humor. I mean, there was no
- 55:54Speaker 1: laughs to be had in that last episode, and when
- 55:56Speaker 1: it comes to a murder mystery ended up being a
- 55:57Speaker 1: real piffle as to what actually when I fall down.
- 56:00Speaker 2: I did think Jason Bateman.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Terrific performance, especially that last episode when they're dance together
- 56:04Speaker 1: in their underwear, him and David Harbor.
- 56:06Speaker 2: I did think that was pretty notable.
- 56:08Speaker 3: Great cast, great actor. Can I can I give you
- 56:10Speaker 3: a cinefin on sixty for.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna save my because Tal's rushing us, So
- 56:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna save my bait on Amazon Prime for next time.
- 56:16Speaker 3: But go ahead and go ahead, can you go? Can
- 56:18Speaker 3: you go? I don't even know if I'm gonna get
- 56:20Speaker 3: the title right. We started. It's on season two. It's
- 56:22Speaker 3: the one with John Ham, your friend's neighbor, your friends
- 56:24Speaker 3: and neighbors, your friends and neighbor. Good good show.
- 56:26Speaker 2: You're liking it?
- 56:27Speaker 3: Yeah, take a peek at its interesting, very interesting Apple
- 56:31Speaker 3: on Apple TV.
- 56:32Speaker 1: Well, listen, I have obviously my wife's in love of him.
- 56:34Speaker 1: I loved him on mad Man. He's a huge Saint
- 56:36Speaker 1: Louis Blues Fanmi, we gotta get him on the show.
- 56:37Speaker 2: What's it about? It looks like one of these dark
- 56:39Speaker 2: anti hero show.
- 56:40Speaker 3: But he just a guy loses his job. He's a
- 56:42Speaker 3: big finance guy, lives in the rich you know, a
- 56:44Speaker 3: little bit like Desperate Housewives. Lives in a rich neighborhood,
- 56:47Speaker 3: and then he starts stealing these high end items from
- 56:50Speaker 3: all of his neighbors to basically pay and keep himself afloat.
- 56:56Speaker 3: So he goes to becoming a thief and a and
- 56:59Speaker 3: a burglar, and then all these things kind of nice
- 57:02Speaker 3: coincide and fall apart. Him managing a Family's a very
- 57:05Speaker 3: good show.
- 57:05Speaker 6: I like it.
- 57:05Speaker 3: I like it interesting.
- 57:07Speaker 2: Add to the list. Pope Leo Flyers fan. Wait what
- 57:10Speaker 2: I know? He loves the White Sox. What's happening now?
- 57:12Speaker 2: That's right, the Flyers doom into a playoffs.
- 57:14Speaker 1: But we want to thank fan Mike Coolan, who recently
- 57:17Speaker 1: gifted Pope Leo a personalized Flyers jersey, perhaps hoping to
- 57:21Speaker 1: curb some divine favor with the top guy at the Vatican.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Coolan was on Italian vacation with his family.
- 57:26Speaker 1: When they joined the audience in Saint Peter Square or
- 57:28Speaker 1: March eighteenth, handed over the jersey again.
- 57:30Speaker 2: Pope Leo J D is a Chicago guy, very well docked.
- 57:33Speaker 2: He's a White Sox fan.
- 57:34Speaker 1: White Sox said, I can't see him being a huge
- 57:37Speaker 1: Dravis CONNECTI fan.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe maybe maybe deep down on his
- 57:41Speaker 2: heart he loves Noah Kates. But what do you think?
- 57:43Speaker 2: Maybe the Flyers have what I'm over.
- 57:44Speaker 3: I think the Pope walked in with that jersey, said
- 57:47Speaker 3: thank you. He walked into his royal Vatican toilet and
- 57:51Speaker 3: he took a big old steaming dump on that Flyers.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Cheers, Rangers fans or Penguins fans would love.
- 57:57Speaker 3: And then he pissed on it too.
- 57:59Speaker 5: I think he lost the bet. I think he lost
- 58:01Speaker 5: the bet to one of his other buddies there, and
- 58:03Speaker 5: they're like, if the Flyers to get in, you gotta
- 58:05Speaker 5: you're you're getting a jersey. And then he's like, all right,
- 58:08Speaker 5: all right, I mean it makes sense.
- 58:10Speaker 1: The Chicago guy Blackhawks Flyers twenty ten Nate's right. Probably's
- 58:13Speaker 1: a buddy who's a Philly Dougy fs Win. Yeah, we're
- 58:16Speaker 1: getting your back.
- 58:17Speaker 2: He's got to be.
- 58:18Speaker 3: No, he's taking his dump on it all right.
- 58:21Speaker 2: Next up eachro Oh No.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Mariners fans in Seattle right to celebrate one of the
- 58:24Speaker 1: greatest hitters in baseball history of the team unveiled the
- 58:26Speaker 1: honorary statue for each rou on Saturday, but ceremony took
- 58:30Speaker 1: a turn.
- 58:31Speaker 2: The bat on the statue broke during the unveiling.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Nate, we hear the expression in baseball, you gotta take
- 58:36Speaker 1: your bat off the shoulder, but they don't mean this
- 58:37Speaker 1: when it comes to statues, Dwayne Wade's statue, Christiano Ronaldo
- 58:41Speaker 1: statues falling apart.
- 58:42Speaker 2: You're in LA, though, LA does it right.
- 58:43Speaker 1: You go, you got chick hern, you got all these
- 58:45Speaker 1: great Superstorty Gretzky out front.
- 58:47Speaker 2: I mean, LA does it right when it comes to
- 58:49Speaker 2: the statues.
- 58:50Speaker 5: Probably Copaitar soon to be Copaitar. Maybe, Yeah, they do.
- 58:54Speaker 5: They do it really well with the statues here. I'm
- 58:56Speaker 5: trying to think of bad statues I've seen that. I
- 58:58Speaker 5: can't think of any. I know the ones you mentioned
- 59:00Speaker 5: with Dwayne Wade. I've seen that one. That one's a.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Looks nothing like him at all.
- 59:09Speaker 5: Uh, it's pretty funny, JD.
- 59:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 59:12Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 59:12Speaker 5: You have you have any good statues that you've seen
- 59:14Speaker 5: that are terrible?
- 59:16Speaker 3: I mean no, I feel like they've all been awful recently. No. Yeah,
- 59:19Speaker 3: I feel like they can't get it right, and it's
- 59:22Speaker 3: like they're trying to go avant garde or abstract or whatever,
- 59:25Speaker 3: and it's just like, make make it look like the person.
- 59:28Speaker 3: I think the bobble heads too, it's just like, make
- 59:30Speaker 3: it look like the person that don't make it.
- 59:31Speaker 2: Yeah, don't overthink.
- 59:33Speaker 3: I just don't understand how we've we were this far
- 59:35Speaker 3: advanced technologically, but we can't make a goddamn statue, right Amen.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Emotional cloning Sheep Here was an emotional.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Statue emotional night Saturday, the King's captain and coopatar, who
- 59:49Speaker 1: Nate just alluded to addressing the crowd following his final
- 59:51Speaker 1: regular season game in l a King's all time leader
- 59:54Speaker 1: in points assists in games, visibly emotional.
- 59:56Speaker 2: A nice send off for the Kings great again.
- 59:59Speaker 1: For me, It's always gonna be Dave Taylor Marceldi on
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: but eventually we're gonna get a statue of guitar, it'said
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Crypto dot Com right and deservedly.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: So I was at this game and it was a
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: great hockey game they played. I mean, LA played great.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: But with Kobe, you know, I mean you saw his
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: speech after he got super emotional, just you know, like
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: I said, I think the best king of all time.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: I mean he just he just does everything the right way.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: I mean even the last four face offs of the
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: game and the dize and he wins all four of them.
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: They're just big face offs. There's little things like that that.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike Scully, Mike Scully ship talks me on Twitter?
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Did he Mike Scully? That was awesome? Do you see that?
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: He fucking I was gonna, I'm gonna come kick your ass.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: I didn't see.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: I didn't see what he said.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: You.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: I saw your response to him, which I I was like,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: I'm sitting at all and what this is.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: I gotta be I gotta be honest. I was kind
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: of like I was like honored.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: So here it was Mike Scully, recent guest Simpsons writer
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: wrote still not sure copy all time best king and
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: at j D four straight six on five D's on
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: face stuff wins and the file Man that makes twenty
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: thousand people cry, turn in your podcasting license JD exclamation point,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: but then give it a haha you respond, ha ha
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: ha ha Jesus Mike, coming from my head tonight, it's okay,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: wanton in thinking it bounced in the first round.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: And it's looking like they're gonna get bounced in the
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: first round again. And I'm going right back at Mike
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: Scully thought to turn in your podcast.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: Look, Mike, I was not expected.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: That was the first time we get is talking shit
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: after the event, like, Wow, I'm not even getting paid
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: for this, Mike Megan, give me a break here.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: It's five fifty, but it's not getting that Simpsons money.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Well that's true.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Last thought here, speaking statues, that's a crypto dot com
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Copeitar's goaltender in the King's Cup wins, Jonathan Quick, calling
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: it a career, the Connecticut product, retiring as one of
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: the greatest goaltenders of his generation. Nineteen seasons with the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: King's Golden Knights and Rangers, he won the Cup three
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: times when the William Jennings Trophy, twice finalist for the
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Vesna in twenty sixteen four hundred and ten career wins,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: ranking twelve all time. JD is Johnathan Quick the greatest
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: American born goalie.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: In hockey history. I'm going Mike Richtor at John Van Piastbrook, but.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Go ahead, Uh, I mean you gotta you gotta put Quick.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: He is the best. No, just I just think most wins,
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: right for an American born goalie. Uh, yeah, one hundred percent.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: I think he is a first ballot Hall of Famer.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: That that hug with Bobrovski was amazing. Hopefully they got it.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: Hopefully Bruce Bennett, fan of the show, got a nice
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: picture of that. But yes, two first ballot Hall of Famers.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: I mean the way he played, the style he played,
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: and also the human being he was and leader he was.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: I think is is just next level. So, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: congratulations to him in retirement, and I'm sure he's going
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: to handle it with uh the same dynamism that he
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: did when he played. That's a word. No, that was nice.
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: That was real nice. I echo what you said. J
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: He's yeah, I mean he is. He is the best
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: American goalie right now for sure. I mean I think
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: Hella Buck maybe have something to say with it at.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: The end of his career.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: Possibly, but yeah, he's he's the man. I think that
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: he uh, you know, when you look at his career
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: and you see what he's he's done, he like, there's
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: no other goalie like him. He was kind of one
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: of the one of his own, you know, own kind
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: of style, you know, the way he was competitive and aggressive.
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: So kudos to Quickie. I was lucky I got to
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: play with him and he could be him and Kopi
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: Inductor the Hall of Fame together at the same time,
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: which would be awesome.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: I'd love to go more on this topic, but tal
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: has got a hard out, So you got two minutes, Shad,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: and that's it. Ov sid finale a Veskan waving off
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: the handshake line, people burying him.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: I go, no, I don't think he knows.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: He's not sure whether or not he's coming back here,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: So why am I going to shake hands all this
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: pomp and circumstances. By the way, guys, I'm still coming back.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I worked at DeVante Smith Pelly and Bruce Boudreaux last week.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Both those guys again caps ties they go. Honestly, I
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: don't think Ov knows he loves Bruce.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Pudrocaus, he loves playing hockeyboll with anything.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: But as you guys know, nobody likes training camp, nobody
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: likes travel, nobody likes the other stuff.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: So I don't think people are criticizing for waving up.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Oh but he didn't know, how'd you take it?
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: I think Ovie's earned the right to if he wants
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: to leave in the middle of the night and not
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: to the Koche farewell tour, which again, Kope, you can
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: do whatever you want when you have that career. I
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: don't know if I kope doing a full year tour
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: of shaking hands and kissing babies the whole year is
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: a great thing, But does he earned the right to
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: do what he wants if the organization allows it. Same
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: thing with Ovi. I said at the start of the year,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: this is last year. I can't waiver. Now I think
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: it's his last year. I got to die in my
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: sword as a podcaster, So I think he goes back
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: to Russia one more year. But I think that was
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: his last game in the NHL, and I just think
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: that that would be perfect Ovie fashion to be like,
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: fuck you guys, am out of here, chewing gum thrushing
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: bud lights and just be like, see you guys later,
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: won a cup. We don't fucking suck.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: I swear god, I swear god. Nay, I think he
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: comes back for one more. What do you think? I
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: don't know.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: I don't have my podcast license, but I would say
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: that working on it, working on it, bender where you
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: are working on it. I still think there's a chance.
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: I think there's a chance he comes back. I think
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: he's going back and forth. I I agree with those guys.
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: I really think he doesn't know what he wants to do,
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: and he sees where this team's going, like they're gonna
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: be good again next year, they're gonna be good.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: So I don't know he's gonna he's gonna balloon to
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: about two seventy. He's gonna go, all right, I'm gonna
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: come back. He's gonna jump on the bike for one
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: air dine and he's going, you know what, fuck this, Yeah,
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: I'm done. I'm going to Russia and that'll be it, and.
