- 0:04Welcome to the CarCast. Today we are podcasting
- 0:08from my Subaru Outback. Complete with stuff in
- 0:11the backseat from having a lake day. I actually
- 0:14tried recording this out on the pontoon at the
- 0:17lake, but there are kids playing in the lake,
- 0:21there are pontoons going by, there are neighbors
- 0:23playing the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Insert
- 0:26clip of that here. The neighbors are playing
- 0:28the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I feel like
- 0:30I need to stop and salute and, like, if only
- 0:33we made Whitefish Bay. Should have just put 15
- 0:36more miles behind her. So I decided, you know
- 0:38what? I really want to get this episode done
- 0:40and I'm not going to let my environment stop
- 0:42me from creating this content that I want to.
- 0:45So I'm going to practice what I preach and I'm
- 0:47going to record in my car. So you're getting
- 0:49a car cast today as we are parked at my parents'
- 0:52lake spot as that is where I am hanging out.
- 0:55But today's podcast, I want to talk about Jimothy.
- 0:59jimothy the raccoon who is taking over my feed
- 1:02everyone's for you pages everybody loves this
- 1:04little weird deformed raccoon and i think that
- 1:08this little weird deformed raccoon can teach
- 1:11us a lot about podcasting. Like there are some
- 1:14hidden lessons in Jimothy's existence and popularity
- 1:17that we can apply to podcasting. So that is what
- 1:20we are going to do today is we're going to talk
- 1:21about lessons from Jimothy for podcasting because
- 1:25he is small but he is mighty. So the first lesson
- 1:28that we are learning from Jimothy the raccoon
- 1:30is that at first when you start something or
- 1:34you become something, in his case a small deformed
- 1:37raccoon, in your case a podcaster, it's gonna
- 1:40feel weird. It's going to feel weird and different
- 1:43and you might feel a little out of place because
- 1:45you don't necessarily know what you're doing.
- 1:48Whether that is learning how to navigate the
- 1:50world by missing half of your spine or if you're
- 1:53just learning how to podcast. If you're learning
- 1:55how to have a conversation with you and a camera
- 1:57or learning how to talk into a microphone or
- 2:00figuring out editing for the first time, you're
- 2:02going to feel weird. You're going to feel different.
- 2:04You're going to feel like you don't belong. But
- 2:07it's important to power through those feelings
- 2:10because life is all about getting past those
- 2:13and having new experiences and feeling a little
- 2:15out of place sometimes. That's what makes the
- 2:18human experience human is having those things.
- 2:21Like we don't all just naturally start out one
- 2:24day as experts. We don't come out of the womb
- 2:26as perfect podcasters. We don't come out of the
- 2:29womb as perfect raccoons sometimes. So what we're
- 2:32learning from Jimothy in lesson one is that it's
- 2:35going to feel weird. You're going to feel different,
- 2:37but you really need to push through that. The
- 2:39next lesson our dear sweet Jimothy is teaching
- 2:41us about podcasting is that when you first get
- 2:44started and you push past, people might double
- 2:48take when they find out what you're doing or
- 2:50what you're all about. Like, remember the first
- 2:52time you saw Jimothy and you're like, wait, what
- 2:55was that? Like what? You're confused. You didn't
- 2:58know what it was. You didn't know how to process
- 3:01what you're seeing, what you're experiencing.
- 3:04I think that we all had that with Jimothy and
- 3:06we have that with new endeavors, right? When
- 3:09we see our friend trying something new, we're
- 3:12all like, wait, you're doing what now? What?
- 3:14People are going to have that reaction to you.
- 3:16And it's important to not let that get to you.
- 3:19Because like we talked about in lesson one, you're
- 3:22having this new human experience. trying something
- 3:26for the first time. And the key word there is
- 3:28you're trying. You're being brave enough to take
- 3:30a bet on yourself and try something new. And
- 3:34people are going to go, wait, you're doing what?
- 3:35You have a podcast about what? What are you talking
- 3:37about? And let them have that reaction because
- 3:41they're not the ones putting themselves out there
- 3:43and being brave and being a cute little raccoon
- 3:46just existing in the world. You're going to get
- 3:48that double take, but don't let the double take
- 3:51stop you from doing what you believe in. And
- 3:54honestly, that double take might come with some
- 3:57judgments. People might be going, oh, oh, like
- 4:00once they double take and they get locked in
- 4:02on what you're doing, they might have some judgments
- 4:04about what you're doing. Like, who does she think
- 4:06she is? Who does he think he is? Why do they
- 4:08think they're the expert in something? They're
- 4:10not qualified for that. They're not an expert
- 4:13podcaster. They're not a real raccoon. Yes, you
- 4:16are. Yes, you are. You're being brave. You're
- 4:18taking a bet on yourself. You're putting yourself
- 4:19out there. They can double take. Let them judge
- 4:22you because it says so much more about them than
- 4:25it ever will say about you. The third lesson
- 4:29we can take from Jimothy is that people will
- 4:31watch you silently for quite some time. Jimothy
- 4:35has actually been around. Let's find out. How
- 4:37old is Jimothy the raccoon? Jimothy the raccoon
- 4:43is between one and two years old. Veterinarians
- 4:46and wildlife experts believe the Seattle -based
- 4:48viral star was born around the spring of 2025.
- 4:51He's famous for his rare spinal defect. He is
- 4:54super cute, but he's been around for a while.
- 4:56And when is he going viral on the internet? Right
- 4:59now. It is July 19th, 2026, and this is the week
- 5:03of Jimothy on the internet. So people are going
- 5:06to sit and they're going to silently watch you
- 5:08for a while. How many videos have you seen lately
- 5:11of little itty bitty baby Jimothy? Like, sitting
- 5:15there with his mom taking such good care of him.
- 5:17She is such a good mom. And she's taking care
- 5:20of this small little rotund raccoon. people were
- 5:25just filming this silently. And now all of a
- 5:27sudden, because it's cool and popular, these
- 5:30videos are populating on the internet like crazy.
- 5:33So for a year and a half, we all silently watched
- 5:35Jimothy and his family existing in the world,
- 5:39not really sharing about it, not really doing
- 5:40anything about it. There's going to be a lot
- 5:42of silent lurkers when it comes to your podcast,
- 5:46your fan base. If you're not starting out with
- 5:48an already established audience, it's going to
- 5:51start pretty small. It's going to be a pretty
- 5:53tight circle, but When it expands and the right
- 5:57people start talking about it in the right rooms
- 5:59to the right people, sharing it with friends,
- 6:01sharing it with family, sharing it with colleagues,
- 6:04that's when that reach just continues to expand
- 6:07and expand and expand. So like Jimothy, it was
- 6:10a slow start. I didn't know about Jimothy last
- 6:12year when he was just an itty bitty baby, but
- 6:14now I know all about Jimothy because the right
- 6:17people were silently watching all this time and
- 6:21now finally sharing it with the right audiences.
- 6:25When you start your podcast, do not be discouraged
- 6:27if you're not getting engagement right off the
- 6:29hook, if you're not getting the downloads you
- 6:31want, if you're not getting the followers on
- 6:33social media that you want, if you're not getting
- 6:35the comments on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook,
- 6:38all the places, because it just takes the right
- 6:41person sharing it with the right platform for
- 6:44it to explode. Savor that silence, sit with it,
- 6:48be okay with it, and let people silently watch
- 6:51you. Because trust me, they're watching. And
- 6:54the last lesson I think we can all take from
- 6:56Jimothy and apply to podcasting is that you can
- 6:59become iconic just for being yourself. This is
- 7:03a vermin we are obsessed with. It is a raccoon,
- 7:07a trash panda. These things carry rabies and
- 7:11the internet is in love with Jimothy just because
- 7:15he's himself, because he's different. He is not
- 7:18your normal. run -of -the -mill raccoon he's
- 7:20got this stubby little tail his spine is a circle
- 7:23he's just this like lump of cute raccoon fur
- 7:27and it's just a raccoon like he is just a wild
- 7:30raccoon he's not in a zoo or anything we're just
- 7:33all obsessed with him because he is uniquely
- 7:36himself. And I think your audience is going to
- 7:39fall in love with you for the exact same reason.
- 7:41They're going to love your podcast because you
- 7:43are uniquely you. You are the only person who
- 7:47has your perspective on life. You are the only
- 7:49person who has lived your life, who has had your
- 7:52experiences, who can translate them into lessons
- 7:55or stories or entertainment. You are you. And
- 7:59there is only one of you. And you can become
- 8:02iconic just for being you. Think about any other
- 8:06famous figure in the past. Remember Punch, the
- 8:09little baby monkey who was getting bullied by
- 8:12all the other monkeys in that enclosure over
- 8:14in Japan? We all loved Punch because Punch was
- 8:18uniquely him. He was a sweet little guy who was
- 8:20getting picked on. He was the underdog. And we
- 8:23all rallied around him because he was him. Your
- 8:26favorite celebrities are the same way. Jenna
- 8:29Marbles is someone who comes to mind for me.
- 8:31She was a huge inspiration for me growing up.
- 8:34I loved her YouTube channel. I loved her Jenna
- 8:36and Julian podcast she did. She was just an amazing
- 8:39content creator. And what she did was just hop
- 8:42on the internet every single week and be herself.
- 8:45like almost to a fault. Like she shaved her eyebrows
- 8:49and dyed her hair so many times and did so many
- 8:51weird things to her face and body, but it was
- 8:54just in the name of being herself and being uniquely
- 8:58her. And it inspired an entire generation of
- 9:01people to also just be themselves. And share
- 9:05their experience with the internet. Share it
- 9:07with the world. And you find your audience by
- 9:10being truly, authentically, uniquely you. So
- 9:13that's my last lesson I think we can learn from
- 9:15Jimothy. And there might be more in the future
- 9:17if I come up with some and see things. But I
- 9:20think that is huge. You can become iconic for
- 9:23just... being you and sharing your experiences
- 9:27with the world. You will find your people if
- 9:29you put your story out there. So that's what
- 9:32I got for you this week for my podcast. This
- 9:33was not a planned episode. I had something totally
- 9:36different planned for this show this week. I
- 9:38had it edited. I had it scheduled the whole nine
- 9:40yards, but we're blowing it up to talk about
- 9:42a raccoon because I am obsessed with Jimothy.
- 9:46I think he is awesome. I just love that little
- 9:48guy so much. And I just hope that you... Take
- 9:52even one of these lessons and apply it to your
- 9:54own podcast, getting it started out in the world
- 9:57and just being true to yourself. And if you see
- 10:00any cool videos of Jimothy that you think I haven't
- 10:03seen or you think I should see. send them my
- 10:05way because I love animal videos on the internet.
