- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, Quinn Priester of the Brewers and joining us right
- 0:06Speaker 1: now and at the Quinn, we really appreciate the time.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us. Great season in the regular season,
- 0:12Speaker 1: now we're ready for the postseason. How's life this week
- 0:15Speaker 1: for you as one of the bye teams.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's fun. Thanks for having me first off,
- 0:22Speaker 2: but yeah, we've been staying ready. We got Monday off.
- 0:25Speaker 2: But now we've been at the field, you know, two
- 0:26Speaker 2: days in a row, you know, staying in tune with
- 0:29Speaker 2: with the other wild card games and and staying ready
- 0:31Speaker 2: as a group and trying to keep things competitive and
- 0:34Speaker 2: you know, as high intensity as we can.
- 0:38Speaker 3: But yeah, it's been fun. All right.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Before we dig into a other stuff, I know you
- 0:42Speaker 4: were raised outside Chicago, So were you a Cubs fan
- 0:45Speaker 4: or a white Sux fan.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I grew up a Cub fan. So now reviews, thank you.
- 0:52Speaker 4: He's gonna the Cubs win. He better slay the cub
- 0:54Speaker 4: that they win, Tomas, he better slay the Cubs because
- 0:58Speaker 4: because otherwise, man, we're gonna have some serious questions about
- 1:01Speaker 4: you know what we're people's fandoms.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Lie here you stop it.
- 1:05Speaker 4: I'm just I'm just kidding. Clearly, clearly just kidding, h
- 1:09Speaker 4: but no, seriously, you guys have had this off time.
- 1:12Speaker 4: How do you stay ready? I know you guys did
- 1:13Speaker 4: some you guys are doing some inner squad games. Do
- 1:16Speaker 4: you throw an inning in these innsquad just to stay sharp?
- 1:18Speaker 4: I saw Abner Reba yelling at the umpire yesterday for
- 1:22Speaker 4: bad calls, and I think, as like one of your
- 1:24Speaker 4: coaches or something is murf What is Murph doing during
- 1:27Speaker 4: these Is he practicing yelling at empires? How do you
- 1:29Speaker 4: guys stay sharp?
- 1:31Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:32Speaker 2: No, I think we're just trying to keep it, you know,
- 1:34Speaker 2: as fun as possible. I think it's fun to go
- 1:36Speaker 2: out and compete against your teammates that you've been with
- 1:38Speaker 2: all year, and I look forward to doing that. Stand
- 1:41Speaker 2: like you said, I'm gonna throw live today and just
- 1:44Speaker 2: to stay ready, stay on top of things, keep things crisp,
- 1:48Speaker 2: you know, while we do have a little bit of
- 1:49Speaker 2: a break here, So going against your teammates, I'm gonna
- 1:52Speaker 2: be excited to compete against them. Just being able to
- 1:55Speaker 2: get close with them all year, you know, granted didn't
- 1:58Speaker 2: have a spring training with the team. Uh, definitely is
- 2:01Speaker 2: something that you know, you kind of look forward to
- 2:03Speaker 2: in spring train and get to face your buddies. But
- 2:05Speaker 2: now you know, I get an opportunity to do it
- 2:07Speaker 2: today and then and then yeah, Charlie, our bullpen coach
- 2:11Speaker 2: is uh is umpiring, and there's some there's some really
- 2:15Speaker 2: good calls and there are some really bad ones. Kind
- 2:17Speaker 2: of shows how difficult it can be. And but I
- 2:19Speaker 2: appreciate his confidence.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Greenie.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Greenie doesn't know what he's doing out there, so make
- 2:24Speaker 5: sure you tell him that I said that. And who
- 2:28Speaker 5: are you looking forward to punching out the most? Is
- 2:31Speaker 5: there somebody in the position player or the guys you're
- 2:34Speaker 5: gonna face. I don't know if you're facing the whole
- 2:35Speaker 5: lineup that you're like, man, I would love he talks
- 2:39Speaker 5: so much smack or like he's a guy that I
- 2:42Speaker 5: would love to go in and have him sign the
- 2:44Speaker 5: baseball for me after I punch him out in the
- 2:46Speaker 5: inner squad.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, I've gotten to probably Sal sounds a
- 2:53Speaker 2: tough guy to punch out too, because he can just
- 2:55Speaker 2: battle and I mean he's following stuff off out of
- 2:58Speaker 2: the glove basically, and so.
- 3:00Speaker 3: He would be a fun one to have. And he's
- 3:01Speaker 3: actually got.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Me when I was with the Pirates, so I got
- 3:04Speaker 2: to get him back in some way, and so he'd
- 3:07Speaker 2: probably be the top of the list. But I mean,
- 3:09Speaker 2: any of those guys, it'd be fun to just have
- 3:11Speaker 2: that little, that little thing over him to mess with
- 3:14Speaker 2: them a little bit. But all in all, I mean,
- 3:17Speaker 2: just try and get my ground balls like I normally do,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and then sometimes I get a punch hup.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Now, I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I don't
- 3:24Speaker 5: think they're opening the gates up like they are opening
- 3:27Speaker 5: the gates for the Phillies. The Phillies sold out just yesterday.
- 3:31Speaker 5: They sold out for their inner Squad today. Would it
- 3:35Speaker 5: make it a little more exciting a little more fun
- 3:38Speaker 5: if you guys were sold out, if there was fans
- 3:41Speaker 5: just packed in America Family.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Field, Yeah, I definitely think it would be It would
- 3:49Speaker 2: be different. I think it'd be really fun. I know
- 3:52Speaker 2: our fans, you know, are the best. They would do
- 3:54Speaker 2: something like that. However, you know, our leadership thought that
- 3:58Speaker 2: doing what we're doing right now, be together as a group,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you know, being a team with you know, and really
- 4:05Speaker 2: you know, keeping each other, holding each other accountable, was
- 4:08Speaker 2: kind of the best way forward. And we're really enjoying
- 4:11Speaker 2: this time to like you, like we've been saying, is
- 4:14Speaker 2: to compete and get a little uncomfortable, put ourselves into
- 4:16Speaker 2: situations that you know are hard ones to navigate, whether
- 4:20Speaker 2: it's you know, second and third, nobody out bases loaded
- 4:23Speaker 2: with one, first and third, all those things, and so
- 4:26Speaker 2: we're able to control a lot more. But certainly having
- 4:29Speaker 2: some fans there would be an interesting factor, even though
- 4:32Speaker 2: it doesn't really you know, there's nothing on the line,
- 4:35Speaker 2: seeing seeing what they start cheering for and whatnot, it
- 4:37Speaker 2: would be kind of fun.
- 4:39Speaker 4: You know, front Row Amy would be there keeping score.
- 4:41Speaker 4: So let's also make sure that we know that front
- 4:43Speaker 4: would be their keep score with their scorebook, even though
- 4:47Speaker 4: she'd still be there.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Well, can you get.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Into your Yeah, I mean, if you don't know who
- 4:51Speaker 4: front Row Amy is, just googler anybody out there and
- 4:54Speaker 4: you'll know she's a legendary Brewers fan. Can you go
- 4:58Speaker 4: into your story a little bit about you were a
- 5:01Speaker 4: first round pick with the Pirates, you get traded to
- 5:03Speaker 4: the Red Sox.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Now you're traded.
- 5:04Speaker 4: What was it like coming up with the Pirates and
- 5:06Speaker 4: then boom, oh man, I'm on.
- 5:08Speaker 3: The Red Sox.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Wow, look at me? Go and you're thinking, all right,
- 5:10Speaker 4: I got a chance from the Red Sox and then
- 5:12Speaker 4: they shift you to Milwaukee and now here you are
- 5:14Speaker 4: in the playoffs. I mean, you have two shots at
- 5:16Speaker 4: the playoffs this year. But what was that journey like
- 5:18Speaker 4: from you from thinking I'm gonna be a pirate for
- 5:20Speaker 4: life and now I'm Red Sox and now I'm a Brewer.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a whirlwin.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It was crazy and to be so yeah, you know
- 5:27Speaker 2: at the end or in the twenty twenty four deadline
- 5:30Speaker 2: is when I got moved. I'd made my debut with
- 5:32Speaker 2: debut with Pittsburgh and like, really thankful for that organization,
- 5:36Speaker 2: just give me a chance. Obviously a ton of my
- 5:38Speaker 2: development within the minor leagues, have a ton of great
- 5:41Speaker 2: relationships over there, you know, up and down the Org.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And then things definitely didn't go the way anybody wanted
- 5:47Speaker 2: them to in the major leagues. Just was really inconsistent,
- 5:50Speaker 2: trying to find my footing, trying to find some confidence.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And then when I was moved to Boston, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 2: was optioned back down to Triple A, started to throw
- 6:01Speaker 2: a little bit harder with just a little some of
- 6:03Speaker 2: a couple like mechanical adjustments that were super easy and
- 6:07Speaker 2: athletic to kind of make that change. And so I
- 6:10Speaker 2: started to throw a little bit harder, and as I
- 6:11Speaker 2: did that, you know, I started to command the ball
- 6:13Speaker 2: a little bit better. And then I started to feel
- 6:15Speaker 2: this confidence start to kind of come back in a
- 6:18Speaker 2: way where it's like, oh, man, I'm doing what I
- 6:20Speaker 2: want to more than not, and so now I can
- 6:22Speaker 2: actually pitch and I can do use sequences because beforehand
- 6:26Speaker 2: just didn't feel like I was commanding the ball where
- 6:28Speaker 2: I wanted to, and so I was trying to execute sequences,
- 6:31Speaker 2: but I wasn't executing it. I wasn't executing them, so
- 6:33Speaker 2: it didn't really matter, you know, kind of what I
- 6:36Speaker 2: knew or what I was taking into the game if
- 6:38Speaker 2: I wasn't executing it. And then that's just kind of
- 6:41Speaker 2: what we've hammered as soon as I got traded to Milwaukee,
- 6:43Speaker 2: certainly something I didn't expect at the beginning of the year,
- 6:47Speaker 2: you know, didn't make the team out of camp with Boston.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Was really you know, definitely disappointed, but used it as
- 6:53Speaker 2: fuel to keep going and to keep you know, working
- 6:56Speaker 2: the processes that you know, I felt a lot of
- 6:58Speaker 2: confidence in and then you know.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I got traded to the Brewers.
- 7:02Speaker 2: It was a huge surprise, but it was cool being
- 7:04Speaker 2: traded so close to home, just being an hour and
- 7:07Speaker 2: a half south of American Family Field. I get a
- 7:11Speaker 2: ton of family to be able to come to games
- 7:12Speaker 2: on off days and be able to go home.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Me and my fiance are able to go home, so
- 7:16Speaker 3: we're both from that area. And then and then we
- 7:19Speaker 3: just hammered the execution of things here.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You know, how many times can we get our sinker
- 7:23Speaker 2: down in a way, can we get the cutter to
- 7:25Speaker 2: the top rail, can we get the slider's back foot
- 7:27Speaker 2: and under? And rather than kind of focusing on the
- 7:30Speaker 2: velo and the stuff of things, you know, trying to
- 7:33Speaker 2: let the iPad tell us what's good versus, hey, did
- 7:36Speaker 2: we execute a pitch and are we on time? And
- 7:38Speaker 2: then once that became the focus, and then winning games
- 7:41Speaker 2: became the focus rather than the stuff, I felt like
- 7:44Speaker 2: I was just really able to be free and really
- 7:47Speaker 2: compete on the Major league mound versus trying to tinker
- 7:51Speaker 2: and fix things.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Talk about hooky, talk about the pitching coach and what
- 7:59Speaker 5: does he bring a different than the other. While it
- 8:01Speaker 5: was small snippets of big lea pitching coaches, what does
- 8:06Speaker 5: he bring because you know the vernacular, you're using sinkers
- 8:10Speaker 5: down below the zone, you know, the cutter to the
- 8:12Speaker 5: top rail. All that stuff is quintessential Hooky. Does he
- 8:18Speaker 5: bring something different in a way that he tells you
- 8:21Speaker 5: how to do something or continues to encourage you and
- 8:24Speaker 5: make you a better pitcher.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 2: The thing that always like impresses me is we're when
- 8:31Speaker 2: we're throwing a bullpen and he's not looking at the catcher.
- 8:34Speaker 2: He's just watching me and and you know, I'll miss
- 8:38Speaker 2: the ball arm side and he'll be like, you know,
- 8:40Speaker 2: he'll know immediately where it missed without even watching the ball,
- 8:43Speaker 2: just by watching you know, the body. And in the past,
- 8:47Speaker 2: I've had pitching coaches who you know, are holding the
- 8:50Speaker 2: iPad to see what the track men saying and and
- 8:54Speaker 2: you know, kind of referencing those things. Throughout my career,
- 8:58Speaker 2: I've also had coaches who and Hook's definitely one of
- 9:01Speaker 2: the guys that is really worried about the mechanic, like
- 9:05Speaker 2: the being on time and making sure we're getting to
- 9:08Speaker 2: the right spots in our delivery and knowing that if
- 9:11Speaker 2: we do that, then the iPad is going to show
- 9:14Speaker 2: what we wanted to show, and so we don't really
- 9:15Speaker 2: need to look at it as long as we're on time.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And when it's so focused on the body and so
- 9:21Speaker 2: focused on being on time, you know, I feel like
- 9:25Speaker 2: that allows my athleticism to kind of come through more
- 9:29Speaker 2: than if I'm trying to focus on a shape or
- 9:31Speaker 2: a you know, a number. And I feel like that's
- 9:35Speaker 2: one of the bigger things. And then obviously, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 2: every day, just holding us accountable to doing the little things.
- 9:41Speaker 2: You know, he's out there during our throwning programs and
- 9:45Speaker 2: even subtle differences. Hey, you know, you're you're tapping your
- 9:49Speaker 2: back foot, and it's some things that I don't notice
- 9:51Speaker 2: that they're kind of happening subconsciously, that he's able to
- 9:55Speaker 2: kind of essentially put the bumpers up if you're bowling,
- 9:59Speaker 2: and so it's like, hey, all right, bounce right back
- 10:01Speaker 2: to the middle. Bounce right back to the middle. He
- 10:02Speaker 2: doesn't he doesn't let us get too far away from
- 10:05Speaker 2: what's been working and what's what's you know, really good
- 10:09Speaker 2: what makes us major leaguers.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Quinn, are you a field guy?
- 10:12Speaker 5: Then?
- 10:12Speaker 4: Does that make you a field guy instead of an
- 10:14Speaker 4: iPad guy, because it's awesome. It's refreshing to hear someone
- 10:17Speaker 4: say the coach doesn't just stare at an iPad. So
- 10:20Speaker 4: are you a field guy, like when you throw a
- 10:22Speaker 4: bullpen are you more of a oh that felt really nice?
- 10:25Speaker 4: Or are you one of those guys that has to
- 10:27Speaker 4: grab the iPad and go, oh, it has twelve point
- 10:30Speaker 4: seven inches of inverted vert so I know I was
- 10:33Speaker 4: a little bit off or can you can you feel it?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's something that has been a change this
- 10:39Speaker 2: year that I think is again freed me up to
- 10:42Speaker 2: be competitive with a hitter rather than with myself on
- 10:45Speaker 2: the mound.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And yeah, like you're competitive with yourself over the week.
- 10:49Speaker 2: But sometimes I'd be in a bullpen session and I'd
- 10:52Speaker 2: throw a pitch that, you know, it's a change up,
- 10:54Speaker 2: that's a ball, you know, not competitive, and and we're
- 10:57Speaker 2: coming over like, hey.
- 10:58Speaker 3: That one was the best one. It's like you no,
- 11:01Speaker 3: it wasn't.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It's a ball. Nobodys swinging at that. It's a bad pitch.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I don't care what the iPad says. And so and
- 11:07Speaker 2: then also it gets frustrating when people, you know, when
- 11:10Speaker 2: you when you throw a pitch and it's your body.
- 11:12Speaker 2: You're like, no, I can't repeat that, and then it's like, man,
- 11:15Speaker 2: this is look at this, this is exactly what we want.
- 11:18Speaker 2: It's like, well, I can't repeat that, So it doesn't
- 11:20Speaker 2: matter that that's what we want. Now it kind of
- 11:23Speaker 2: feels like what we're trying to do is a lot
- 11:26Speaker 2: more difficult than it really is. Like it should feel
- 11:29Speaker 2: it should feel athletic, it should feel smooth, and it
- 11:31Speaker 2: should feel explosive, and regardless of what the iPad says,
- 11:35Speaker 2: like all year, the hitters have been tonas that that's
- 11:37Speaker 2: it's playing late.
- 11:38Speaker 3: And so you know, it's definitely good to keep an
- 11:42Speaker 3: eye on things. You know.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Sometimes you know your slider can start to have more carry,
- 11:47Speaker 2: and you're gonna want to fix that because you know, honestly,
- 11:51Speaker 2: that's just going to improve how you can get to
- 11:52Speaker 2: that down in the way spot. If it carries, it's
- 11:54Speaker 2: going to stay up, you know, versus when it feels
- 11:57Speaker 2: the same. But using the iPad in the right way
- 12:00Speaker 2: been huge for me, but which is honestly not using
- 12:02Speaker 2: it a lot at all.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Are you the nicest person on earth? Or do you
- 12:06Speaker 5: put the best songs on the radio or something? Nineteen
- 12:10Speaker 5: straight wins. I mean, when it's Queen priesterday, the boys
- 12:13Speaker 5: just say, you know what, we're gonna hit, We're gonna
- 12:16Speaker 5: score more runs than the other team, and we're gonna
- 12:18Speaker 5: go out and get this w nineteen straight. Is that
- 12:21Speaker 5: just like a weird number to you or is it
- 12:23Speaker 5: something that you're like, yeah, I can see it because
- 12:26Speaker 5: everybody likes me.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I don't think it's because everybody likes me. You look
- 12:34Speaker 2: at it, and there was there's a couple of games
- 12:36Speaker 2: in there. There's a game in Miami where the offense
- 12:38Speaker 2: really really picked me up. I I, you know, lost
- 12:41Speaker 2: a ball over the first baseman's hat and kind of
- 12:44Speaker 2: let them start a rally. And then also against the Mets,
- 12:48Speaker 2: I gave up six and four and the offense comes
- 12:50Speaker 2: back in Nica cons hits a walkoff homer.
- 12:52Speaker 3: And that's just the kind of team we've been all year.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And certainly there's been games where you know, I've I've
- 12:57Speaker 2: contributed to the win more than others.
- 13:00Speaker 3: But I think, you know, one, it's a matter of
- 13:03Speaker 3: you know, the dice kind.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Of rolling your way, and and then also you know,
- 13:07Speaker 2: just being consistent, being sticking to our process, and and
- 13:10Speaker 2: also you know, staying within you know what we do well.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I think you know, times where strikeouts start to go up,
- 13:18Speaker 2: it's it is what it is, you know, that's.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Not happening because I'm chasing the strikeout.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I'm the most aggressive in the zone when I'm trying
- 13:25Speaker 2: to get out with every pitch. And and I think
- 13:28Speaker 2: a lot of times getting the offense back in the
- 13:30Speaker 2: dugout happens quicker if you're getting balls in play.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And and then when we're playing.
- 13:34Speaker 2: As good as we were and as good as we are,
- 13:37Speaker 2: you know, just getting those guys you know who are
- 13:40Speaker 2: who are you know, ready to hit back in the
- 13:42Speaker 2: dugout and off their feet, but also ready for every
- 13:45Speaker 2: ball is just something that's just the way that I've
- 13:48Speaker 2: found success to help our team win. And you know
- 13:51Speaker 2: that might change as the future goes, but right now,
- 13:54Speaker 2: that's what it is. And and I trust every single
- 13:57Speaker 2: guy that that plays defense behind me, and and I
- 13:59Speaker 2: want the bomb play.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I want them to, you know, help me out.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Hey, Quinn, A couple of things, you guys, you guys
- 14:07Speaker 4: have family trips, right with the Brewers, you guys have
- 14:10Speaker 4: family trips. So yeah, here your uncle, your uncles are included.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Now so my uncle can fly on these family planes.
- 14:16Speaker 4: And when your uncle flies, does he get pocket pancakes
- 14:19Speaker 4: from Murph? Or is that restricted to players and reporters?
- 14:23Speaker 2: Well, they got to stay in the cockpit. So yeah,
- 14:26Speaker 2: my uncle and then his son, my cousin Alex, also
- 14:30Speaker 2: flies for United. And there's the way that it works
- 14:33Speaker 2: is they're able to pick up the charter trips, uh,
- 14:36Speaker 2: you know, kind of like a month out or something
- 14:38Speaker 2: like that in advance it and it worked out for
- 14:40Speaker 2: them to both you know, get our flight back from Texas.
- 14:44Speaker 2: We took a couple of pictures which was which was
- 14:47Speaker 2: really fun and obviously you know, my uncle came over
- 14:49Speaker 2: the intercom and and said a few things. It was
- 14:51Speaker 2: a really cool moment, you know, for all of us. Uh,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and came back and got a couple of wins, so
- 14:57Speaker 2: they might be good luck for us and and maybe
- 14:59Speaker 2: you know, they'll fly some more in the in the future.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Here and are your officially confirmed game two starter or
- 15:05Speaker 4: do we know that? Have they told you that or
- 15:06Speaker 4: do we know that?
- 15:08Speaker 2: We don't know that yet right now. I'm just staying
- 15:10Speaker 2: ready for whatever role that uh, you know, the team
- 15:13Speaker 2: needs me in and you know, absolutely you know, looking
- 15:17Speaker 2: forward to getting into my first postseason game and whatever
- 15:21Speaker 2: role that is. And you know, I've been opened for
- 15:24Speaker 2: this year. I've I've came in out of after three
- 15:26Speaker 2: innings I've started, and uh, you know, I feel prepared
- 15:29Speaker 2: and ready for whatever role. You know, Murph and Hookie
- 15:33Speaker 2: and Jim and everybody you know there thinks is going
- 15:36Speaker 2: to help us win a game.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Got it is a salo in the room. Is Mike
- 15:39Speaker 4: Baslo in the room?
- 15:41Speaker 3: Yes, he's sitting over there.
- 15:43Speaker 4: What thanks for coming out, because on Saturday when I
- 15:45Speaker 4: did your game, he didn't show up until the game started.
- 15:48Speaker 4: I know he had his appendix out, but nobody cares. Okay,
- 15:51Speaker 4: he was watching this. Yeah right, thank you. So I'm
- 15:55Speaker 4: glad that he could make it for the playoffs, but
- 15:57Speaker 4: not for a regular season meaningless game for you. So
- 16:00Speaker 4: tell him I appreciate his effort.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yeah he's laughing. He pointed at his appendix. But I
- 16:06Speaker 2: think we just stick with no excuses.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Thank you, Thank you.
- 16:09Speaker 1: You can get the Appendixiety said.
- 16:11Speaker 4: He was back the next day and then.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Go to the trainer's table and.
- 16:15Speaker 4: He's like, oh, I'm my appendix rupture there. Sake this
- 16:18Speaker 4: out for me i've done. Had to wait two days later.
