- 2:07It's time for the Plantangent Manner Parts one and two from Hollywood. It's time
- 2:15now for Johnny Dollar. This is mister Costello at the Plantagent Hotel in Vicksburg,
- 2:23Virginia. You left word. Oh yes, mister Costello. I'm acting
- 2:27for Eastern Seaboard Casualty Insurance, you know investigation. Who I understand you had
- 2:30a burglary down there? Are we sure did, mister Dollar. Well,
- 2:34the main reason I wanted to talk to you, mister Costello, was to
- 2:36let you know I'm getting the first plane out of Hartford as soon as the
- 2:38weather clears. You're coming here to Vicksburg. Yes, that's right. Easton
- 2:43Seaboard Casualties asked me to investigate the burglary for them good. And I'll expect
- 2:46you when I see you, and I'll be there tonight and every weekday night.
- 2:59Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of Demand with the action packed expense account.
- 3:02America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator was Truley Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by
- 3:21special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Chief accountant Eastern Seaboard Casually Insurance Company, Providence,
- 3:25Rhode Island. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of
- 3:30the plant Agent matter. Expense account Item one two dollars cab fare my apartment
- 3:38at the Hertford Airport. I had them two one hundred and seventy three dollars
- 3:43one airline ticket from Hartford to Vicksburg, Virginia and back again. We took
- 3:47off in ten below zero weather about one thirty in the afternoon. By five
- 3:51o'clock we circled into Vicksburg for a landing. It had them three five dollars
- 3:54cam fair to the Plantation Hotel, three miles outside of town, a pleasant,
- 4:00spacious, gentle old buildings set back among the wintry trees. Fifteen minutes
- 4:03after checking in, mister Costello appeared wrung my hand and reported that the Vicksburg
- 4:09police had apprehended the burglar who had rifled the hotel safe the night before.
- 4:12All of the loot had been recovered as a matter of form. I spent
- 4:15two hours with the police itemizing the stolen property, which was all intact.
- 4:19Then I returned to the hotel, assured mister Costello that everything would be all
- 4:23right, and got busy trying to make return reservations for Hartford. Now.
- 4:28The rest of this report is by way of apology for my tardiness in submitting
- 4:30the expense accounts. In between phone calls to the airport, I went downstairs
- 4:34to the bar for a drink, and then stepped outside for a walk in
- 4:39a breath of fresh air. In the back of the parking lot behind the
- 4:42hotel, a blond woman about thirty in a green suit was talking to a
- 4:45tall, tippitty dark man who had his back to me. They were arguing
- 4:49about something. As I walked past them, I couldn't help hearing too well.
- 4:54Please please help me. Are you talking to me? Yes? Please
- 4:58on your way, mister, This is private, you hear me. Just
- 5:00keep your hands to yourself, Bud, I'll keep rolling. Then we're having
- 5:03a little argument private. Please. I don't know who you are, but
- 5:06I shut up. She's had a little too much to drink, mister.
- 5:11That's all oh that's all. It doesn't look that way to me. What's
- 5:15this all about? I just told you and nosey she's had a little too
- 5:17much to drink. I'll go on, but get on your way. Wait
- 5:19a minute, I told you to keep your hands to yourself. Yeah,
- 5:27I don't want to keep it up. You hear me, Yes, I
- 5:31hear you, and I I let it go this time, mister, just
- 5:39this once. You want to have them haul in? Miss No, that's
- 5:44all right, it's all right, okay, then, okay, come on,
- 5:47beat it you. I'll listen, beat it. I said, she's
- 5:49tired of you, and so am I go on, beat it? Okay,
- 5:54Just remember Amy, I was only trying to talk some sense into you.
- 5:58So long, hero, Thanks, thank you very much. That was
- 6:09awfully kind of Yes, where it hurts the most. I guess I'll never
- 6:16get accustomed to being disappointed in people. Oh well, he didn't look like
- 6:20your type anyhow, So why isn't it just Oh I'm sorry, Hey,
- 6:26hey, look now this is just the end of everything. Yeah. I
- 6:32know, maybe it looks sad way, but but maybe it isn't. I'm
- 6:36sorry. I'm very sorry to have caused you all this trouble. That's okay,
- 6:43must look rather cheap and dingey. I mean, I don't know what
- 6:48that means. Well, look, let me ask you something. Did you
- 6:53really have too much to drink tonight? No? I only had one drink?
- 6:58All right? Then maybe you'll let me buy you one. How about
- 7:00it? You're very kind. You look like you should be with someone for
- 7:03a little while right now. So what do you say? How about it?
- 7:08You're a very kind man. And that's the way it began in the
- 7:17parking lot outside of the Plantation Hotel in Vicksburg, Virginia. She trembled a
- 7:21little when I led her back inside to the warmth of the bar and the
- 7:25people, and sat her down at the booth looking back into now. I
- 7:29guess we had a rather strain, one sided conversation. She did all the
- 7:32listening and seemed preoccupied with her problems, whatever they were. Even though I'm
- 7:36not the greatest wit in the world. I did manage to get a faint
- 7:39smile out of me. It was a nice smile from a warm, frank
- 7:43mouth. I had them four two drinks for us. You see there,
- 7:55next thing, you know, you'll be telling me it's Joe. Oh that
- 7:58reminds me. That reminds me of another one said. It's one of the
- 8:00oldest and most respected jokes in the country. You've probably heard it a thousand
- 8:03times. It seems ten men were standing in the rain under an umbrella and
- 8:07none of them got what Well, just about then a fellow walked up you.
- 8:13You've been very very kind to me. Thank you again. Well,
- 8:18I'm I'm glad you feel better, Miss h Are you from here in Vicksburg?
- 8:22No, my home's in Hertford, Connecticut. I flew down here this
- 8:26afternoon on business. I'm waiting for a flight out. Oh. What's your
- 8:31name, Johnny Dollar? Thank you again, Johnny Dollar. Thank you for
- 8:39not asking me my name, for not asking me about the man in the
- 8:41parking lot, for not asking me to explain what my trouble is. Thank
- 8:46you, mister Dollar, and thank you for sitting here with me this little
- 8:50while and trying to make me laugh. You really feel all right now?
- 8:54Huh? Yes? I think so. That's well, because I wouldn't want
- 8:58to let you go. Oh if I thought you were going to step outside
- 9:01and start crying again. No, No, I won't do that, I
- 9:05promise you. Sure positive, okay, Ah, you want one more for
- 9:09the road now, Oh, thank you, But i'd better not, mister
- 9:13dollar, I really should be getting home. Well, will everything be all
- 9:16right at home? What? Oh? Oh? Yes, he wasn't my
- 9:22husband or my boyfriend. Even he won't bother me. Okay, then yeah,
- 9:28let me help you out with your coaches. Thank you. Hey you
- 9:35have a car, No, I'll get a cab. There's always went out
- 9:37in front. Good, I'll help you. Thank you. Say, look,
- 9:43I'm going to tell you something. I'm staying here in Vicksburg at the
- 9:46Planetagent, and I doubt if I'll be able to get a plane out tonight,
- 9:48probably not until tomorrow sometime. So look, if you need me for
- 9:52any reason at all, why don't you just call me? Okay, yes,
- 10:00that's right, cam taxi. You're still worried about him, won't you?
- 10:05Why do you say that the way you looked around when we stepped outside
- 10:09here just now? Would you like me to see your home? No,
- 10:13thank you, you've done enough already. And about him, I made a
- 10:18mistake, that's all. Oh, we all make mistakes, so forget about
- 10:20it. Well, I'm afraid this one can't be corrected very easily. But
- 10:26here's my cab. Good night, mister Dollar. Good night. You and
- 10:33I will probably never meet again, but I shan't forget your kindness. Thank
- 10:39you. Okay, and I am downtown. Please. I hope you have
- 10:43a nice trip home, mister Dollar. Hold drive a hole? Hey,
- 10:50anything wrong? What is it? I know I have the strangest feeling.
- 10:58Look you feel all right? Just shivering? Sir? I know what hurts.
- 11:09I didn't think. What is it? What can I do? Mister?
- 11:20Let's go a driver. She fell back across the seat of the cab,
- 11:26riding with pain. I took her in my arms and tried to find
- 11:30out what it was, but by that time she wasn't able to speak.
- 11:33In another ten seconds, she was unconscious. The cab driver delivered us to
- 11:39an emergency hospital. Five minutes later. They carried her in through the ambulance
- 11:43entrance. I let the driver go and waited around the desk to see if
- 11:48I could learn what happened. Just waited. Vicksburg Emergency. Waited one moment,
- 11:52Please by it. Please Vicksburg Emergency out this time of the night,
- 12:01sir. You'll have to call first thing in the morning. I'd suggest any
- 12:03time after seven thirty. Yes, sir. Yes, hey, look,
- 12:09would it be all right to go back and talk to the doctor now,
- 12:11I'm afraid not, sir, Well, could you bring him out here I've
- 12:15been waiting for I'm sure he'll be out in a very short while. He
- 12:18knows you're waiting to talk with him. He thought maybe forgot me. No,
- 12:22sir, I just want to make sure she's all right. The doctor
- 12:24will be out Vicksburg emergency just a moment. I'll connect you go ahead,
- 12:31please. Has she had many of these attacks? Sir? M oh,
- 12:37I don't know. I just met her. Oh well, if you'd like,
- 12:41we could call you at home and let you know how she is.
- 12:43This isn't my home. I'm on my way out of town as soon as
- 12:46i can get a plane. I'll wait, certainly. Excuse me, Yes,
- 12:52doctor, Yes he's right here. Yes, sir, thank you.
- 13:00Doctor. You'll see an as good. Thanks. End of the hall,
- 13:03room, one eleven, Okay, thank you. I don't know what it
- 13:09was why that hallway looked so long to me? Call it an old fashioned
- 13:15premonition of what have you. That's what I had, walking down the hall
- 13:18to see a doctor about a girl i'd known only a few minutes. There
- 13:22were three people in the room, two doctors in their white clothes and the
- 13:24nurse. I can still see the light burning above their heads, the way
- 13:28they look tired, exhausted. All three of them had been working very hard.
- 13:35Doctor. Yes, oh, you're the man who was with her,
- 13:39that's right. How is she? When did this happen? About a half
- 13:43hour ago. I put her in a cab at the Plantation Hotel and she
- 13:46complained of feeling sick, so I brought her here, but she lost consciousness
- 13:48in the cab. See sit down please? Oh why some papers we want
- 13:54you to fill out? Just routine. Oh your name please, Johnny Dollar.
- 14:00And she is missus Dalla. No, oh, I see you're a
- 14:03friend of hers, mister Dolla. But yes, look what is it?
- 14:09Doctor? What's the matter with her? I can't exactly tell you that right
- 14:11now, mister Dolla. Well I wait a minute. Why don't have to
- 14:15contact her family first? Mister Dolla? This girl is dead now. If
- 14:18you're willing to pull up her picture, is yourself in my position? I
- 14:24mean I'd known the girl only a few minutes. I didn't even know a
- 14:28name. Yet somehow I'd become closely involved with her too much, so I
- 14:35guess all I knew about her was that she was someone who had died while
- 14:39asking me to help her. Under the circumstances, what would you do,
- 15:01Johnny Dollar? Are you the mister Dollar from hot That's right? Who's this
- 15:05Jim Aicin's Vicksburg Police Department. I'm sending a call for to pick you up,
- 15:09mister Dollar. Some questions. I want to ask you about that young
- 15:13lady who would last night? I hope you weren't planning on leaving town.
- 15:16Of course I wasn't. I canceled my plane reservations last night. You tell
- 15:20me where you're located. I'll come down by myself. No sense getting had
- 15:24up. You want in your own backyard, now you know, Dolla?
- 15:26I know where I am, the town where a girl died in my arms.
- 15:28If you can stop getting lazy with me for a minute, maybe you
- 15:31can tell me who she was why, because I'd like to talk to her
- 15:33family. I was the last one to see her alive. Who is she?
- 15:37We have not entified it yet. Uh she's still Jane Doe. Expense
- 15:46accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Vicksburg, Virginia to it's a
- 15:54special investigated Johnny Dollar. The following is the accounting of expenditures during my investigation
- 15:58of the Plantation matter, A real mystery about a very mysterious girl who happened
- 16:04to be dead. Expense account item five ten cents one morning newspaper, which
- 16:11carried a two inch story and a half in space about an unidentified girl who
- 16:17had died at Vicksburg Emergency Hospital the previous evening. I was reading it over
- 16:21in the lobby of the Plantation Hotel when one of the Vicksburg Police force stepped
- 16:23up to the desk and asked for my room number. He was a swarthy
- 16:26man in a black suit, plain clothes type. Wow, I big buddon,
- 16:33I'm Johnny Dollar. Oh, Jim Akins. We talked on the phone
- 16:37a little while ago. You said you were sending a car. You sounded
- 16:41so hugh hit about everything. I thought I'd drop over myself to say,
- 16:44hello, I got the car outside. Okay, okay, let's go.
- 16:47Where are you from, Dona Hertford, Connecticut. I'm an insurance investigator.
- 16:51Look, I talked to a man in your burglary division yesterday about the burglary
- 16:53they head at the hotel yesterday. I was sent down here by Easton Seaboard
- 16:56Casualty Insurance cause you got any identification? Yes here okay? Looked like who
- 17:07you say? Uh? Now? Just what was your connection with that girl
- 17:11who died at the emergency hospital. I met her outside in the parking lot
- 17:15last night, back of this hotel. She was with a man I don't
- 17:18know who he was. They were having an argument. I stopped when she
- 17:22asked me to help her. I got rid of the man and took her
- 17:25inside here and bought her a drink. Then I started to put her in
- 17:27a cab to send her home, but she got sick before the cab could
- 17:30take off, so I took her to the hospital. She died there.
- 17:36And that, mister Aikins, is it? How long did you know?
- 17:40About a half hour? I told her. She didn't tell you her name,
- 17:41no where she lived, no name of this man she was with in
- 17:47the parking lot. Who was he? I haven't the slightest idea well,
- 17:49what kind of trouble was she having with him? She didn't tell me that
- 17:52either. I didn't ask her. But you sat in the cocktail lounge over
- 17:56there, and you had a drink or two one one, no name,
- 18:02no address, no nothing. Well, maybe we better do a lot talking
- 18:06downtown. Anything you say, let's go. Higgins turned out to be a
- 18:15lieutenant, and it took him the whole ride downtown to thaw out and make
- 18:18up his mind that I was just as concerned about what had happened to the
- 18:21unidentified girl as he was. He rephrased, but asked me the same questions
- 18:26in front of a stenographer when we got down to his office. He was
- 18:30still asking me questions when he led me in the police stenographer to the basement
- 18:33of the building, the morgue. And she didn't say anything to you about
- 18:41herself before she collapsed. Uh no, all I know is what I've told
- 18:44you. You're sure positive. Hey, look, let me ask you one.
- 18:48I put up with yours for over an hour. Now, what killed
- 18:52her? Yeah? Well do you know? No, we're still trying to
- 18:55find out. What'd you talk about while you were having a drink? Was?
- 18:59She asked me for help, that's all. It seems she needed somebody
- 19:02else to do the talking at the time. So I did it. I
- 19:03meane chokes and try to get in a laugh. I was a great,
- 19:06big cut up it's ard me if you want it. It won't do much
- 19:08good. Still got some things to find out. Yeah, lows An,
- 19:25it sure is. This is the girl who were with last night. Yes,
- 19:30you're positive, I'm positive? Okay, Dollar, you want to sign
- 19:34this for the records. That's that's good, all right, Sam, you
- 19:41can send this on upstairs. We'll be up pretty soon. No, dolla,
- 19:45did anyone there at the hotel bar seemed to know her? I don't
- 19:49know, cocktail, wait for somebody like that, I don't know, well
- 19:53I do. We asked around, knowing that ever seen in the Plantation hotel
- 19:56before? Tell me something, doll, he ever worked on one like this?
- 20:03No, not quite. O kay. Then I'm gonna tell you what
- 20:07we're up against. All the clothes she was wearing was standard brand stuff,
- 20:11mostly come from stores downtown, some of them New York. Gonna take us
- 20:15a long time to check him out. We may not be able to trace
- 20:17him at all. We're gonna work on the cleanin marks too, and that'll
- 20:21take time. Now. For what you say, An, from what she
- 20:23said, and it wasn't much. He's probably a local girl. Somebody's wondering
- 20:27about it, But nobody come in make out a report asking for I hate
- 20:32to do it. I might have to take a picture, run it into
- 20:34night's paper. Just find out who she is. I could be pretty lousy
- 20:37for somebody. It's allows a business. I thought you could help men dolla.
- 20:42Oh well, two things. One that budge she was with, he
- 20:45was arguing without in a parking lot. You say that meant he must have
- 20:48had a car out there, but you didn't bother to take a look at
- 20:52nah all right? And another thing now wears her putting. I don't know.
- 20:55Well, she must have powdered the nose when she sat down and had
- 20:57that drink, WHI the every woman does. She must have reached for a
- 21:00cigarette or something in that pisce. So why is that puss? I don't
- 21:03know. Now you see, you see how much help you are to me?
- 21:08Or just second mark, Lieutenant Achoms, Oh yeah, put them out.
- 21:19While Lieutenant Agins talked on the telephone, I lit a cigarette. After
- 21:23that, I tried to interest myself in a calendar that was hanging on the
- 21:26wall. After that, I tried tying both shoelaces. But wherever my eyes
- 21:33rolled around that white chiled room, somehow they always came back to rest on
- 21:37the quiet, still form of the girl who had ask me for help.
- 21:41By any standard, she was attractive, fine golden hair spun out of smooth
- 21:45white skin. I remember her eyes had been very big and very brown.
- 21:52Now they were closed, But she looked more asleep than what she was.
- 21:59She looked as though she might wake up any minute and answer me if I
- 22:00sat out loud what I was saying to myself silently? How can I help
- 22:04you? Let's get out of here, dollar hope mean that was a lab
- 22:18on the phone. I had a little trouble with analysis. What analysis?
- 22:22What kind of trouble identifying? They called in a toxicologist from the university.
- 22:26A drug called Perry Mythol killed it. Parry Mythol. That's a new one
- 22:30on me, me too, Petrol based stuff. Now they figured it had
- 22:33been in her stomach an hour or so before she collapsed. Could be a
- 22:37suicide judge for the way she acted and talk to you. What about the
- 22:41boyfriend? Well, that seems to fit in, okay. Told you she
- 22:45was disappointed in him, didn't she. Well, sometimes women want to end
- 22:48it all in front of a guy they have in trouble with. It'll probably
- 22:52turn out. Ah, you talk like a copy and im so simple.
- 22:56Make it fit into your formula. This girl knocked herself off because she lost
- 22:59her boyfriend. This girl killed herself because she lost a job, filling in,
- 23:03filling in, giving off the boat. Dollar, whoa, what's the
- 23:04matter with you? What are you getting there? Oh? Oh, I
- 23:08don't forget what? No now, wait a minute, wait, just a
- 23:12minute. I'm not all cop Dollar. I saw her lay in that too,
- 23:18and I can see she was a nice girl, and something went off
- 23:19l wrong with him. If I'd been the last one to be with him,
- 23:22talk to her livewise. Probably be taking the same way you are.
- 23:27But take it easy, sorry, lieutenants. Man, I'll buy you some
- 23:33breakfast. He did, but it didn't help much. And after that we
- 23:40shook hands and parted. Expense account had of six two dollars cab fair back
- 23:44to the Plantation hotel. I went up to my room, packed my bags,
- 23:48called the airport and made arrangements to leave on the six o'clock plane.
- 23:52There's nothing more I could do about the case, nothing more at all.
- 23:55It was police business. I had time before the plane for a quiet drink
- 23:59at the hotel bar. What's your pleasure, sir, Oh some of that
- 24:04little water? Yes, sir, you were you want to do the last
- 24:10night? For any chance? Yes, sir, why you asked? I
- 24:12just wondered if you happen to remember me? No, sir, was you
- 24:18at the bar at that table over there with a lady, a blonde girl
- 24:21in a green suit. Well, I'm sorry, I just don't remember.
- 24:25Oh, there you go. Thanks, here keep the change. Well,
- 24:29thank you, sir. Now I probably waited on you, but well,
- 24:33so many people, you know. Yeah, sure, why you asked?
- 24:37The lady lost a purse? Thought maybe it might have been turned in here.
- 24:41No, sir, we didn't get any places last night. A couple
- 24:45of money clips is on, not much in them either. Uh you're talking
- 24:53about the lady who died later on, ain't you so? Yeah? Yeah,
- 24:59I am. Police officers was in he asked the same questions. I
- 25:03thought they would be you policeman too. No, I was a friend of
- 25:10hers. Oh, well then you should call the police. They still trying
- 25:14to find out her name, saw my hm. Well, I thought you
- 25:19said she was a friend of you. I didn't happen to know her name.
- 25:22It didn't seem important to ask it. Last night. I just don't
- 25:26understand. I can tell you one thing. I might have saved her life
- 25:30if i'd asked her name, and some other things. Oh yes, sure,
- 25:42expense account had him seven three dollars three drinks. I sat there for
- 25:47almost an hour, talking to the bartender. Once when he stepped out of
- 25:49the kitchen, I went over to the booth where i'd sat the night before
- 25:52with the unidentified dead girl. I searched down on the cushions behind the table,
- 25:56under the chairs, hoping the missing purse might still be around. I
- 26:00found nothing. Then I had another idea. I left went out to the
- 26:03parking lot where I had first seen her at your cammister, No, I
- 26:10don't have one. Oh well, hey, look, last night I was
- 26:12out here with a lady. I met her in a man here in the
- 26:15parking lot about over there where that Chevy is. So what, well,
- 26:18the lady lost her purse last night. I just wondered if it might have
- 26:22been lost out here someplace. Well, it might have been. Nobody turned
- 26:25anything into me. Wanna take a look? Sure? All right? Well
- 26:29what time last night? All around ten, maybe a few minutes after huh.
- 26:33A lot of cars in and around that time of night. Did you
- 26:36look last night? I didn't know it was missing until this morning. About
- 26:40here, you say, huh, here's the chevy. Yeah, well let's
- 26:42take a look. Yeah, make it a good one. Yeah. Hey,
- 26:48I think you're a lot. Yeah Yeah, here's a purse. Hey,
- 26:52you're in real luck? Is that hers? It was hers, all
- 26:56right, a green Swede purse, the same dollars of green suit you've been
- 27:00wearing. It still carried the faint sweet odor of her perfume as I remembered
- 27:04it. I looked inside, but there was nothing to tell me her name,
- 27:08lipstick, calm, a ten dollar billons of small change, and one
- 27:12other item, a thirty two automatic recently fired. Now here's our star to
- 27:33tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow, a dead
- 27:37girl's thirty eight automatic comes to life. Join us, won't you yours truly?

- 28:08speaking, welcome back. Definitely starting out to be a very personal case that
- 29:18is a bit of a break from the insurance almost procedurals we've had so far,
- 29:25with a lot more of just a personal angle. And like I said,
- 29:33this seems like it'll be a very different type of case. So we'll
- 29:37be looking forward to parts three and four. We do have one listener a
- 29:42comment via email. Joan emails in and she asked regarding episode ten twenty seven,
- 29:51the Quaibaro matter, there was the salesman in Ladies ready to wear.
- 29:56The man's voice I heard many times, and I keep on thinking it is
- 30:00Howard mcnehir, who played Floyd the Barber on The Andy Griffith Show on tv
- 30:04AM. I right, he had a distinct voice, one that's hard to
- 30:07miss, you know. I thought Johnny was giving up a little too soon
- 30:10on this case between when along came the salesman and gave it the finishing touch.
- 30:18The salesman was indeed Howard mcneir, who from television is best known as
- 30:25Floyd the Barber, but really was one of those key character actors and we
- 30:30heard him a lot of times. I think particularly on. Let George do
- 30:36it as well as yours. Truly, Johnny Dollar managed to create a lot
- 30:40of great supporting characters and really was just invaluable in the days of radio.
- 30:47All right, well, that will do it for today. We will be
- 30:48back tomorrow with our next serial murder and mister Malone, and then join us
- 30:56back here on Wednesday as the plantagent matter continues. In the meantime, Sendor
