- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Thursday. It's Oscar's week. That means it's time to
- 0:21Speaker 1: enter the Thursday Thunderdome. On today's show, our special guests
- 0:28Speaker 1: will compete alongside my co host, my bff, my companion
- 0:33Speaker 1: professional sports better Simon Hunter, in an epic test of
- 0:37Speaker 1: wagers and wits that will chew them up and spit
- 0:41Speaker 1: them out like a tainted batch of Bazooka. Hello Simon,
- 0:47Speaker 1: Hello chat. I'm I'm noticing a theme here. We had
- 0:50Speaker 1: a four twenties show and then today's Earth Day. It's
- 0:52Speaker 1: very uh, it's a hippie week for us here on
- 0:55Speaker 1: the Action Network. Totally tubular, dude, we are rat like that.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm four good Simon Today, You've got to really strong challengers.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Our first guest is a true Hollywood insider, a top
- 1:12Speaker 1: talent manager at Mosaic in Los Angeles and recently named
- 1:17Speaker 1: and I say recently, like you know, within the past
- 1:19Speaker 1: three years, one of the forty most powerful people in
- 1:23Speaker 1: comedy by the Hollywood Reporter. Also an Oscar savant. Michael Lasker. Welcome, Michael,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Thank you great, great to be here. Thanks that intro listen.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I could go on longer. I feel like if anyone
- 1:38Speaker 1: is laughed at anything on any streaming service in the
- 1:41Speaker 1: past thirteen months, there's a very good chance you are
- 1:44Speaker 1: involved in it, or someone you represent is involved in it.
- 1:47Speaker 1: That's how powerful you are. More important, more importantly, you
- 1:53Speaker 1: are something of an Oscar savant. Like if I asked
- 1:57Speaker 1: you to name the best picture non knees from a year,
- 2:02Speaker 1: random year, say like, could you do it? Yes, easily,
- 2:07Speaker 1: give me the best picture nominees from pureminees. Well, one
- 2:11Speaker 1: thing I want to be clear on because people debate
- 2:13Speaker 1: this all the time. When you say a year as
- 2:15Speaker 1: related to the Oscars, any true Oscar insider knows it's
- 2:19Speaker 1: the year the movies were released, So it's released years
- 2:24Speaker 1: that would be like Oscars technically because that's when the
- 2:27Speaker 1: show aired. So for ninety four it's of course Pull Fiction, Shoshank, Redemption,
- 2:31Speaker 1: Forrest Gump, Quiz Show, four Weddings in the Funeral, and
- 2:34Speaker 1: it's a legendary year because Forrest Gump one, and you know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you had two other candidates you know that are like
- 2:40Speaker 1: famous movies forever with Shaw Shank and Pull Fiction that
- 2:43Speaker 1: some people thought should have won so a great year
- 2:46Speaker 1: from movies. Regardless, you have proven your Hollywood insider nous
- 2:50Speaker 1: and your total geekiness all in one very technical my pleasure,
- 2:56Speaker 1: you are perfect for the Thunderdome. Our second guest maybe,
- 3:01Speaker 1: And I think I've told her this outside of my
- 3:04Speaker 1: family and sometimes including my family. My favorite person in
- 3:06Speaker 1: the world. She commands a cabal of hard working gambling writers.
- 3:11Speaker 1: She's the second most notable alum in the history of
- 3:16Speaker 1: AZUSA Pacific University. Katie rich Creek, Hello, Katie, Hello, Thanks
- 3:22Speaker 1: for having me, and I'm I'm honored to be right
- 3:25Speaker 1: up there with Christian McCoy a on this list of
- 3:27Speaker 1: APU alum. All right, here's how the game is played today.
- 3:31Speaker 1: You'll all answer two kinds of questions. First, traditional trivia
- 3:35Speaker 1: questions about sports, sports, betting, the world at large in
- 3:39Speaker 1: this case Oscar's. Second, completely subjective and totally assinine, open
- 3:44Speaker 1: ended questions or prompts that I alone will judge. And
- 3:47Speaker 1: a reminder for Michael and for Katie, I'm generally rooting
- 3:52Speaker 1: for Simon and I'm going to do my best to
- 3:54Speaker 1: make sure that he puts himself into position to win
- 3:57Speaker 1: um by the end of the show. To accumulate points,
- 4:00Speaker 1: you must answer the trivia questions correctly and also convinced
- 4:04Speaker 1: me that your responses to those open ended prompts are
- 4:08Speaker 1: better than the responses from your opponents, because, just like
- 4:13Speaker 1: sports betting, you can't get them all. Right, let's begin
- 4:16Speaker 1: Part one all things Oscars Today. We'll be celebrating the
- 4:21Speaker 1: nine presentation of the Academy Awards taking place this Sunday night.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And while American sports books taking bets on the Oscars
- 4:29Speaker 1: is exciting, those golden statues aren't the only Oscars worth
- 4:34Speaker 1: talking about. To prove who the real Oscars expert is,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'll ask you three questions, one about the Oscars the award,
- 4:42Speaker 1: one about sports figures named Oscar, and one about Oscars
- 4:48Speaker 1: in pop culture. Katie, here is your Oscars Award question.
- 4:53Speaker 1: This actor is one of the greatest film performers of
- 4:56Speaker 1: all time. He's been nominated for a Best Actor Oscars
- 5:00Speaker 1: six times and has one a record three times, including
- 5:03Speaker 1: in two thousand thirteen for Lincoln. He The answer is
- 5:09Speaker 1: not named Oscars, It's just Oscar topics. Yes, correct, So
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's Daniel day lewis very good. Also, I was gonna
- 5:16Speaker 1: be so embarrassed for you in front of Michael Lasker,
- 5:19Speaker 1: who's a incredibly powerful person in Hollywood and an oscar expert.
- 5:22Speaker 1: If on the first question, when we're touting you as
- 5:24Speaker 1: the Oscar expert at action and having listened to your
- 5:27Speaker 1: podcast about the oscars here you get that wrong, would
- 5:30Speaker 1: have been sad. Here your sports oscar question. This boxer,
- 5:35Speaker 1: oh my god, nicknamed the Golden Boy, earned Olympic gold
- 5:38Speaker 1: in ninety two, was the world's top rated pound for
- 5:40Speaker 1: pound fighter in Oscar Dalaya. That's so easy. That's that's embarrassing, Katie.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Here's your pop culture question. Renowned fashion designer Oscar Dala
- 5:52Speaker 1: rent A first rose to international fame as a coturier
- 5:56Speaker 1: for this iconic and fashionable first lady. No, it's not
- 5:59Speaker 1: jack Kennedy. It's totally Jackie Kennedy. That seems way too old, simon.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Director James Cameron shouted, I'm the chain the world after
- 6:13Speaker 1: winning Best Director for this film, which tied the all
- 6:16Speaker 1: time record with eleven total Oscar wins. Titanic. Very nice.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Why was that first pair of boobs? I saw you
- 6:27Speaker 1: always got something, don't you will? By the way, totally
- 6:30Speaker 1: appropriate you would say that, and I would say, I
- 6:33Speaker 1: saw that movie, walked out of the theater, it was
- 6:35Speaker 1: crying hysterically, and ran into a woman I went to
- 6:38Speaker 1: college with I hadn't seen in four years, Perfect Simon.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Four years ago this month, Oklahoma City thunder guard Russell
- 6:45Speaker 1: Westbrook logged his forty second triple double of the season,
- 6:48Speaker 1: breaking the year records set by this iconic star nicknamed
- 6:54Speaker 1: the Big Oh is it Oscar Robinson? Oscar Robertson. I
- 6:59Speaker 1: will give it to you because he was close enough,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and I know in your heart what you meant. Well,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'm here for you, buddy, Simon. The popular packaged meat
- 7:08Speaker 1: brand Oscar Meyer promotes itself with a fleet of these
- 7:11Speaker 1: iconic vehicles, first introduced in nineteen six. One summer, our
- 7:16Speaker 1: producer Matt Mitchell drove this vehicle around the country representing
- 7:21Speaker 1: the Oscar Meyer brand. Are you're talking about the Oscar Meyer?
- 7:25Speaker 1: We are like hot dog car thing they drive around
- 7:28Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell? Can I give him credit for that? Absolutely?
- 7:31Speaker 1: And I need the proper name, Simon, the proper name
- 7:33Speaker 1: for that car, um the Wienermobile. Yes, well done? Oh
- 7:40Speaker 1: my god. Also one summer in the suburbs of Chicago,
- 7:43Speaker 1: where I grew up, I ran a hot dog cart
- 7:45Speaker 1: selling hot dogs, and it was Oscar Meyer. Chad Millman
- 7:49Speaker 1: is proud of himself. Michael, are you ready? You've been
- 7:52Speaker 1: very patient. This is tough. I mean, they just did
- 7:54Speaker 1: incredible work. They did incredible work. They are both nailing,
- 7:58Speaker 1: and it's the best Simon has ever done. I expect
- 8:00Speaker 1: did nothing. I also, I would like to point out
- 8:02Speaker 1: when I was a freshman at USC I was a
- 8:04Speaker 1: seat filler at the Academy Awards, which for the seven
- 8:08Speaker 1: movies was when Titanic One Love Titanic, Great Night, Great Oscars.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So you were in the building, Yeah, I watched it happen.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Whose seats did you have to fill? Who was the most?
- 8:20Speaker 1: That's a great question. So you know, they tell you
- 8:22Speaker 1: right as you line up outside of the auditorium and
- 8:25Speaker 1: right as the show starts, they say, you're just gonna
- 8:27Speaker 1: take any open seat you can find. I went about
- 8:29Speaker 1: fourteen rows back from like the right side facing the stage,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and I said, next to this older gentleman, and I
- 8:36Speaker 1: realized after about five minutes it was Army archer Army
- 8:38Speaker 1: Archerd is not alive anymore, but Army Archerd for every listening.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Was the most famous like variety reporter for this publication
- 8:45Speaker 1: Variety for like seventy years. So I sat with him.
- 8:48Speaker 1: The show started, You're like forty minutes in and I
- 8:51Speaker 1: started talking to him, and he told me that his
- 8:52Speaker 1: wife wasn't feeling well and his wife didn't come. So
- 8:55Speaker 1: I took him my like placard that they made you
- 8:57Speaker 1: wear around your neck. I took it off, I put
- 8:59Speaker 1: in my tuxied pocket, and I stayed the entire nights
- 9:02Speaker 1: with the Army Archer for three and a half hours. Now,
- 9:04Speaker 1: the downside of that is my buddy I went with.
- 9:06Speaker 1: He sat in like five different seats through the night.
- 9:08Speaker 1: He sat next to like Julie Christie and like all
- 9:11Speaker 1: these famous actresses. But it was super fun to just
- 9:14Speaker 1: like have a seat and be there. I was basically
- 9:17Speaker 1: sitting behind Matt Damon's parents the whole night. So that
- 9:21Speaker 1: is that's when Matt Damon and Ben affleck one for
- 9:23Speaker 1: good will hunting. I feel like that is one of
- 9:25Speaker 1: the most sought after positions as it comes around to
- 9:29Speaker 1: Oscar Week. You were a college student, you were a
- 9:32Speaker 1: seat filler, you were wearing a tuxedo. Yeah, did you
- 9:34Speaker 1: rent the tuxedo or did you own it? Great question.
- 9:38Speaker 1: In Tulsa, Oklahoma, where I am from, I worked at
- 9:41Speaker 1: a tuxedo shop, and so I was home for spring
- 9:43Speaker 1: break and I went to the tuxedo shop and I said, hey, um,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna go to the Oscars in two weeks. Could
- 9:49Speaker 1: I get a tuxedo from you guys? Then you can
- 9:50Speaker 1: say that one of your tuxedos was worn to the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Academy Awards. So that was the tuxedo I was wearing.
- 9:56Speaker 1: And they're in lies the early learnings of how to
- 10:00Speaker 1: be a manager and an agent? Uh. In nine, Michael
- 10:04Speaker 1: Alpaccino was nominated four but did not win the Oscar
- 10:08Speaker 1: for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Glen Garry
- 10:12Speaker 1: Glenn Ross, What's your hired? Four? Just to help us?
- 10:17Speaker 1: Does that seem clear to you? To help us, not
- 10:22Speaker 1: to funk us up? But he did receive his first
- 10:27Speaker 1: and only Oscar that same year, I mean the Best
- 10:29Speaker 1: Actor Oscar for his role in this film. Alright, so
- 10:33Speaker 1: the Son of a Woman. Now again technically that is
- 10:36Speaker 1: the year of n but it's the Oscars that that
- 10:39Speaker 1: aired in ninety three. Now, that was his eighth Oscar nomination.
- 10:43Speaker 1: If you want me to name the other six that
- 10:44Speaker 1: preceded Glen Gary Glen Ross, the Center of a Woman,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'll do it right now if I would like you
- 10:49Speaker 1: to do it, and I will give you extra credit, okay,
- 10:53Speaker 1: nineteen seventy two, Best Supporting Actor, Godfather nineteen seventy three,
- 10:57Speaker 1: Best Actor Serproco nineteen seventy four, or Best Actor Godfather
- 11:01Speaker 1: to nineteen seventy five, Best Actor Dogday Afternoon. Keep in
- 11:07Speaker 1: mind that is four straight years the guy is nominated
- 11:09Speaker 1: for an Oscar. I mean that's pretty unprecedented. Nineteen seventy
- 11:12Speaker 1: nine Best Actor nominee for Injustice for All, So that's five.
- 11:17Speaker 1: The sixth nomination is nine Best Supporting Actor for Dick Tracy.
- 11:22Speaker 1: The seventh is Glen Gary Glenn Ross, which is ninety
- 11:25Speaker 1: two Supporting Actor. The eighth is Sent of a Woman
- 11:28Speaker 1: Lead Actor. He wins ninety two, and then he finally
- 11:31Speaker 1: got his ninth last year or The Irishman. So he's
- 11:34Speaker 1: been nominated nine times now. I can't decide if you're
- 11:37Speaker 1: super fun at parties were totally insufferable your second question
- 11:42Speaker 1: after a network of gamblers bribed him with five thousand
- 11:46Speaker 1: dollars Star outfielder Oscar Happy Felsh became a key figure
- 11:51Speaker 1: in a plot to intentionally throw the World series a
- 11:54Speaker 1: massive scandal commonly referred to by this nickname. It's the
- 11:59Speaker 1: Black Sock right, the Black Sox Scandal? Very good? It
- 12:02Speaker 1: was a movie movie called A Men Out made by
- 12:05Speaker 1: John Sales. Third question, the classic preparation of veal Oscar
- 12:09Speaker 1: is veal cutlets topped with crab meat blanche asparagus. And
- 12:14Speaker 1: this more commonly seen on eggs Benedict oh so hollandaise sauce.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Part one. Here is the prompt. Ready, The prompt is,
- 12:25Speaker 1: since the dawn of the motion picture, professional athletes have
- 12:28Speaker 1: found their way onto the silver screen. And whether you
- 12:33Speaker 1: were moved by the seminal performance of Shaquille O'Neal in
- 12:36Speaker 1: Kazam or were overcome by subtle technical brilliance of Dennis
- 12:40Speaker 1: Rodman in Double Team, all American filmgoers agree we need
- 12:45Speaker 1: more film roles for athletes. Your task is to remove
- 12:49Speaker 1: an actor from a famous starring role, substitute in an
- 12:53Speaker 1: athlete of your choice, selling on why your choice would
- 12:56Speaker 1: achieve the most ridiculous results imaginable. For example, a young
- 13:01Speaker 1: Hayley Joe Osman from the sixth sense, take him out
- 13:05Speaker 1: and replace him with a fully grown Jerome Bettis as
- 13:09Speaker 1: the child who sees dead people. Are you ready, Simon?
- 13:14Speaker 1: I am so looking forward to your answer on this.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Thanks sad. Yeah, And I also try to skew it
- 13:19Speaker 1: towards you because I know how much you love yourself,
- 13:21Speaker 1: So I know if I give it a little bit
- 13:22Speaker 1: into Chad's life, he usually gives me the point. So
- 13:25Speaker 1: I don't know, it felt pretty easy. The Fridge Perry,
- 13:29Speaker 1: I would love if he was the Terminator. Just the
- 13:32Speaker 1: thought of him on that motorcycle treated the shotgun with
- 13:35Speaker 1: a little white kid on his back would just be
- 13:36Speaker 1: amazing visually. So the Fridge is the Terminator to me,
- 13:40Speaker 1: it would just be amazing. Especially for that time period.
- 13:42Speaker 1: That just would have been an amazing combo. Here's what
- 13:45Speaker 1: I love about what you just did. You didn't just
- 13:48Speaker 1: take like an athlete of today and put him into
- 13:53Speaker 1: any random movie. You matched time period with very happy,
- 14:00Speaker 1: very smiley, wonderful athlete who would like be the perfect
- 14:05Speaker 1: comedy antidote to what the Terminator needed in that specific era.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Love it, Love it. What does William Refrigerator Perry think
- 14:16Speaker 1: of the Pontiac Resian. You open the door, the light
- 14:21Speaker 1: goes on. Michael and Katie, you guys are screwed. There's
- 14:23Speaker 1: no way you're topping that. But Michael, you can try. Well.
- 14:26Speaker 1: First of all, I'd like to point out, ironically, maybe
- 14:28Speaker 1: Simon knows this that in the original Terminator they wanted O. J. Simpson.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So speaking of you know, football players before they cast Arnold, Wow,
- 14:38Speaker 1: that I did not know. Oh yeah, oh yeah. So
- 14:41Speaker 1: I was thinking about this last night, and by the way,
- 14:44Speaker 1: can I say one thing? Can I just say one thing?
- 14:46Speaker 1: He would have killed that role. Shame on you. Okay,
- 14:51Speaker 1: So I see about this last night, and I was
- 14:53Speaker 1: trying to connect back to my youth and something connected
- 14:56Speaker 1: maybe to my family. So okay, my pitch is Bubba Smith,
- 15:01Speaker 1: who played High Tower in the Police Academy films, which
- 15:04Speaker 1: probably anybody or thirty has never seen. But you know,
- 15:06Speaker 1: he won a Super Bowl the Baltimore Colts, and he
- 15:08Speaker 1: went to Michigan State, where my father went to college.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And I thought it'd be funny if Bubba Smith played
- 15:13Speaker 1: now the Snacks back to the Oscars, if he took
- 15:15Speaker 1: over the role that Rob Williams played in Dead Poets Society,
- 15:18Speaker 1: which he was notmated for an Oscar for nine because
- 15:21Speaker 1: Bubba Smith like that cannot emote and only has like
- 15:25Speaker 1: one phase of his you know, speaking, I feel like
- 15:28Speaker 1: I'm in pretty good shape, but I have to work
- 15:31Speaker 1: hard on it every day. But remember, in order to
- 15:34Speaker 1: get to it, you've got to go through it. And
- 15:38Speaker 1: to see him play this incredible teacher who's inspiring all
- 15:41Speaker 1: the kids and so forth. And by the way, I
- 15:42Speaker 1: always loved Bubba Smith. He sadly he died um of
- 15:45Speaker 1: like hypertension in his house like ten years ago, Police Academy.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Those were all brilliant. Kudos for getting even closer to
- 15:55Speaker 1: my heart. Then Simon did um and uh seeing him
- 16:02Speaker 1: like trying to get ethan Hawk he spanned on a
- 16:05Speaker 1: desk in Dead Poet Society would be out standing. Captain mccaptain,
- 16:15Speaker 1: Mr Ndition, That's that's high comedy. So I mean, I
- 16:18Speaker 1: don't know, man, he's giving you a run for his money.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And I like he had many layers there. He he
- 16:23Speaker 1: connected it to his family, he connected it to sort
- 16:27Speaker 1: of what would be the complete antithesis of what that
- 16:30Speaker 1: role required. Katie. That's a tough one, I know, but
- 16:34Speaker 1: it seems like we might have saved the best for
- 16:36Speaker 1: last on this one. So the bar I was using
- 16:39Speaker 1: for this when thinking of an athlete was who are
- 16:42Speaker 1: athletes who obviously are very athletics skilled at their game,
- 16:45Speaker 1: but don't look like they are actually athletes? Nicola jokesch
- 16:49Speaker 1: for example, looks like he plays basketball in foot flops.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I'm not using him. I'm gonna use Vince will Fork
- 16:56Speaker 1: because I think he'd be funny and pretty much any role.
- 16:58Speaker 1: But the role I have chosen for him is as
- 17:01Speaker 1: Ralph Maccio. We're placing Ralph Maco in the Karate Kid.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I think that means I don't even know what to say.
- 17:16Speaker 1: That is, I'm in the middle of Cobra Kai right now.
- 17:20Speaker 1: All of a sudden, I started thinking about Vince Wilfork
- 17:22Speaker 1: as like the older dad in Cobra Kai. Oh my god,
- 17:27Speaker 1: Vince Wilfork getting lessons from Mr Miagi. Katie I would
- 17:32Speaker 1: sell out best seller. That is that is really good
- 17:38Speaker 1: coming on a strong simon, How do you feel about
- 17:41Speaker 1: Katie's answer? Honestly, like, I like both their hitcher is
- 17:43Speaker 1: better than mine. I would say Katie's is funnier. That's funny,
- 17:47Speaker 1: like Vince Wilfork, Like she said, he's athletic. You can
- 17:50Speaker 1: watch the hard knocks back in the day. He was
- 17:51Speaker 1: kicked the field goals and cowboy boots. He is an athlete,
- 17:54Speaker 1: So I like that. Pick a Vince Wilfork. Michael, I'm sorry, man,
- 17:58Speaker 1: she won the round the first of all. I thought
- 18:00Speaker 1: it was a brilliant answer. Love Kardi, kid, I have
- 18:03Speaker 1: finished Cobra Kai and Cobra Kai is amazing. And again,
- 18:06Speaker 1: as a kid from the eighties, what those guys Herds
- 18:09Speaker 1: and Slashburg and Josh Hield did to that actually really brilliant.
- 18:12Speaker 1: People talk about it in our business all the time
- 18:14Speaker 1: of like a new unique way of reinventing something really clever.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Katie wins that round. Nice Jack, Katie. Part two. All
- 18:21Speaker 1: sports betters know the phrase bad beats, but fans of
- 18:25Speaker 1: the oscars are also familiar with defeats pulled from the
- 18:28Speaker 1: jaws of victory. But whether it's awards season or your
- 18:30Speaker 1: favorite team's postseason, it feels like some bad beats made
- 18:34Speaker 1: everybody mad. Let's highlight a few Katie. Golfer John Daly's
- 18:39Speaker 1: began his golfer John Daily began his rise as the
- 18:43Speaker 1: PGA Tours Anti Hero with his win at the Championship.
- 18:49Speaker 1: One man not celebrating was second place finiture Bruce Litzky.
- 18:54Speaker 1: It was the closest he'd ever get to winning a
- 18:56Speaker 1: golf major, although he was once on the winning side
- 19:00Speaker 1: of this by any old golf competition between Europe and
- 19:05Speaker 1: the United States, the Ryder Cup correct wrap it around Simon.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Many grown ups inside and outside of Hollywood were mad
- 19:15Speaker 1: when the Academy gave eleven year old Underdog and a
- 19:18Speaker 1: Pack Win the award for Best Supporting Actress in pac
- 19:22Speaker 1: Win's Underdog win came over the likes of Oscar winners
- 19:26Speaker 1: Emma Thompson and Holly Hunter, as well as this actress,
- 19:30Speaker 1: the only Oscar nominated performer on the Netflix show Stranger Things.
- 19:36Speaker 1: No way you're getting this. You are not even in
- 19:38Speaker 1: the ballpark of getting this. I should know because I
- 19:41Speaker 1: used to love Beetle Juice as a kid. Man, Like,
- 19:43Speaker 1: that was one of my favorite movies. Is that one
- 19:45Speaker 1: on a Rider? Oh my god, you totally got it. Yeah, dude,
- 19:50Speaker 1: I used to love Beetle Juice as a kid. I know,
- 19:52Speaker 1: Like I probably shouldn't been watching that as like an
- 19:53Speaker 1: eight nine year old, but oh my god, I love
- 19:55Speaker 1: that movie. Well done, Michael. The January NFC Championship became
- 20:02Speaker 1: one of the most devastating upsets in NFL history. Despite
- 20:05Speaker 1: a fifty one record and an electric offense led by
- 20:09Speaker 1: All Pro quarterback Randall Cunningham, this team lost to the
- 20:12Speaker 1: Atlanta Falcons after kicker Gary Anderson missed the field goal
- 20:17Speaker 1: for the first time all season. Okay, so nice see.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I was going to say, you would think it's the
- 20:25Speaker 1: Eagles because of Randall, but no, wasn't. At the Minnesota Vikings.
- 20:28Speaker 1: They were fifteen and one that year, and Anderson hasn't
- 20:32Speaker 1: missed in two years. That's a pretty good man. If
- 20:35Speaker 1: you say, do you think Harry Anderson bank this field goal?
- 20:39Speaker 1: The answers from yes, nine yards away, Pa, it was
- 20:46Speaker 1: the Minnesota Vikings. Look that that's a little you know.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Well you didn't know because my father is from the
- 20:51Speaker 1: Bronx is that we were big NFC East people, even
- 20:54Speaker 1: into well intul So, Oklahoma because of the Dallas Cowboys,
- 20:57Speaker 1: who we hated. But everybody in Tulsa in that area,
- 21:00Speaker 1: they all they all adopt the Cowboys. So we're rooting
- 21:03Speaker 1: for the Giants every Sunday just always hated the cowboys.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Here's my question. Your dad is from the Bronx. How
- 21:10Speaker 1: do you get ends up at Michigan State and then
- 21:13Speaker 1: goes to Tulsa the army. He was in the r OTC.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And then he went to Korea after the Korean War,
- 21:19Speaker 1: and then he still owed them like two years. They
- 21:21Speaker 1: sent him to Fort Sill, which I think is in Lawdon, Oklahoma.
- 21:24Speaker 1: So then in the early sixties, him and his army,
- 21:27Speaker 1: but he would go into Tulsa on the weekends to
- 21:28Speaker 1: like go to bars and meet girls. And you know,
- 21:31Speaker 1: he liked Tulsa. It's a really pretty city. It's kind
- 21:34Speaker 1: of like Pasadena for people in California. They're listening. And
- 21:38Speaker 1: he stayed. He got a job, and he stayed and
- 21:39Speaker 1: that was it. And then he met my mother through
- 21:41Speaker 1: his sister at a wedding like seven years later, and
- 21:44Speaker 1: she moved from Boston to Tulsa, and my brother and
- 21:47Speaker 1: I were raised there. And that's it. I've only been
- 21:49Speaker 1: to Oklahoma once. King Fisher, Oklahoma. Okay. Sure, I covered
- 21:53Speaker 1: a rodeo there. Okay, that sounds right, and it was fantastic.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I loved it. Yeah, Oklahoma, Oakland a city. I think
- 22:00Speaker 1: the babe a whole area where it's just Brick Road,
- 22:02Speaker 1: where it's all bars on this one street especially, I
- 22:04Speaker 1: went when the thunder were good where it was like
- 22:06Speaker 1: you went to a Durant see Westbrook, you just walked
- 22:08Speaker 1: to the bars. I was like, you know what. Oklahoma,
- 22:10Speaker 1: My one of my childhood best friends is this guy,
- 22:13Speaker 1: David Holt, who's the mayor of Oklahoma City, and we
- 22:16Speaker 1: sort of have this rivalry because I'm from Tulsa, he's
- 22:18Speaker 1: from Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City has just been laughing Tulsa
- 22:20Speaker 1: for the last fifteen years. They got the thunder obviously,
- 22:23Speaker 1: but they've also just done well you're referring to I
- 22:25Speaker 1: think it's called Bricktown, and they've just done all these
- 22:28Speaker 1: incredible projects in their city to like boost the city.
- 22:31Speaker 1: And you know, they've built a new convention center. So
- 22:34Speaker 1: it's a source subject for Tulsa's um. But David is
- 22:36Speaker 1: doing he will listen to this at some point. He's
- 22:38Speaker 1: doing an incredible job. David does what is right. Uh,
- 22:43Speaker 1: despite being the mayor in a red state. I'll leave
- 22:46Speaker 1: it at that. I feel like Michael is the Forrest
- 22:49Speaker 1: Gump of this podcast. Somehow he like is connected to
- 22:53Speaker 1: all of these things through the course of time and history. Uh,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and I think that's utterly arm Katie Europe. One of
- 23:02Speaker 1: the most bizarre out of nowhere wins in Oscar's history
- 23:05Speaker 1: occurred in two thousand and seventeen, when a film was
- 23:08Speaker 1: incorrectly announced as the winner of Best Picture on stage.
- 23:15Speaker 1: The embarrassed presenter was Warren Batty, one of the most
- 23:18Speaker 1: successful figures in Holliday history and the producer, director, and
- 23:21Speaker 1: start of Thism based on a comic strip, which was
- 23:26Speaker 1: nominated for seven Oscars. Guys, you gotta give me trivia
- 23:30Speaker 1: for the years I was alive for Nope, that's this
- 23:34Speaker 1: is your punishment for being and successful. You get harder questions.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I'd like to point out, if I've already named this
- 23:42Speaker 1: movie earlier, the podcast Yes You Did. Al Pacino was
- 23:46Speaker 1: nominated for an Oscar for his role in this movie. Oh,
- 23:50Speaker 1: I hate it here because wonderful phone a friend moment
- 23:55Speaker 1: and I have completely dropped the ball by having terrible retention.
- 23:58Speaker 1: So far, nobody's missed the questions, so you might have
- 24:01Speaker 1: to miss a question. I can't. I can't even give
- 24:03Speaker 1: any more clues. Comic strip movie. I have no idea,
- 24:09Speaker 1: doesn't work, could mean anything? Fibre. Have you no sense
- 24:12Speaker 1: of pride? Here? What's it doing? No sense? No such
- 24:16Speaker 1: up yesterday? I'm looking for get Why do I got
- 24:20Speaker 1: foot soldiers first? God, that's not even in my brain.
- 24:27Speaker 1: All right, there you go. Simon inside the Tokyo Dome
- 24:30Speaker 1: in a massive upset seemed to depress just about every
- 24:34Speaker 1: boxing fan in the world when this thirty seven one
- 24:37Speaker 1: underdog knocked out Mike Tyson, the undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion
- 24:41Speaker 1: of the world. Who is the underdog? Oh god, I
- 24:43Speaker 1: should know this because of the gambling aspect, and it
- 24:45Speaker 1: was like one of the biggest underdogs ever in boxing.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I know it's Buster is the last named Douglas Buster
- 24:51Speaker 1: Douglas it is. But I can't believe like that. It's
- 24:54Speaker 1: not so prominent in your brain. I was born in
- 24:58Speaker 1: I get it. I get it. But like you're you're
- 25:02Speaker 1: a sports fan, this is one of the most iconic
- 25:04Speaker 1: moments in sports history. I know it's depressing. I feel
- 25:07Speaker 1: you on that, But I can tell you about some
- 25:08Speaker 1: rapper right now and you'd be like, I know that
- 25:10Speaker 1: is I'm like that guy has been number one with
- 25:11Speaker 1: the Billboard for two years. So that's just how age works. Buddy,
- 25:14Speaker 1: don't try to make me feel uncol don't make this
- 25:16Speaker 1: about me. Okay, you two old, You're just an old man. Michael.
- 25:21Speaker 1: At the two n two nineteen Oscars, underdog Olivia Coleman
- 25:24Speaker 1: defeated minus four fifty betting favorite Glenn Close for Best Actress.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It was another close but no cigar moment for Gwen,
- 25:34Speaker 1: her seventh Oscar nomination without a win, including a Best
- 25:37Speaker 1: Supporting Actress nomination in this baseball film. The film is
- 25:42Speaker 1: The Natural. Now also Glenn Close, who like you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: been a stage actress, nominated for three Oscars in a
- 25:50Speaker 1: row as she like entered movies. So it's like nine
- 25:53Speaker 1: two world according to garb three The Big Chill nineteen
- 25:56Speaker 1: eight for The Natural, and then she gets nominated again
- 25:59Speaker 1: in eighties seven for Fatal Attraction for Best Actress and
- 26:02Speaker 1: then eight eight for Dangerous Liaisons. I think Olivia Coleman
- 26:05Speaker 1: is amazing. She won for the favorite, the favorite, which
- 26:10Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, despite sharing a name with this podcast,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I didn't love might might take on that, I mean,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I adore obviously, Glenn Close is amazing Levia Coleman is amazing,
- 26:20Speaker 1: incredible on the Crown and a lot of other stuff.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I think the thing would happen there is that the wife.
- 26:25Speaker 1: That movie was like being manufactured to win her an oscar.
- 26:28Speaker 1: The movie was good, it felt a little bit like
- 26:30Speaker 1: a TV movie, and the favorite I think was just
- 26:33Speaker 1: kind of greater than the sum of its parts because
- 26:35Speaker 1: of all the great acting and the filmmaking. I actually
- 26:37Speaker 1: in the Academy in that moment it sort of felt like,
- 26:39Speaker 1: we don't want to give it to Glen Close for this.
- 26:41Speaker 1: We want to give it to her for something that
- 26:42Speaker 1: is more deserving. And you know she's gonna lose again
- 26:45Speaker 1: on Sunday with Hillbilly Elogie, I mean, the Grandmother and
- 26:48Speaker 1: Minari is probably gonna win. So look, Glenn Close is
- 26:51Speaker 1: a legend. She seems from you know, she has got
- 26:53Speaker 1: a pretty public persona now on Instagram. She seems to
- 26:56Speaker 1: be really cool and really kind of get you know,
- 26:58Speaker 1: the joke, and she's fine. She will get an Oscar
- 27:01Speaker 1: for something she'll be deserving. And Olivia Coleman also up
- 27:04Speaker 1: against her again, this is right, that's right. Going Close
- 27:07Speaker 1: also the most dominated actress to not win an acting
- 27:10Speaker 1: award thus far. Yeah, I think that's right. Olivia Coleman.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I have probably watched Moura Olivia Coleman during the pandemic
- 27:18Speaker 1: between The Crown, The Favorite and broad Church than anything else.
- 27:23Speaker 1: She's amazing. She's everywhere, and she's on Fleabag in the
- 27:26Speaker 1: second season. I mean, she's right. Credible actors. All right,
- 27:30Speaker 1: here we go some Oscar winning for this is the prompt.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Some Oscar winning films age better than others, and some
- 27:36Speaker 1: just make people matter and matter. If you could go
- 27:38Speaker 1: back in time and hand one Oscar name and a
- 27:40Speaker 1: nominated film, it's rightful award. What would you choose? And why,
- 27:46Speaker 1: Michael your first? Alright? So I was when I thought
- 27:49Speaker 1: about this yesterday, I was going to, uh say, pull
- 27:53Speaker 1: fiction to win Best Picture over for Scump. And we've
- 27:55Speaker 1: kind of already discussed that earlier on the podcast. But
- 27:58Speaker 1: that you know, I was fifteen pull fiction change in
- 28:00Speaker 1: my life, and I Forrest Gump I thought was incredible too,
- 28:03Speaker 1: but it always bumped me out the pull fiction loss.
- 28:05Speaker 1: But I'm gonna I'm gonna augment the answer and it's
- 28:08Speaker 1: gonna connect back something to Chad we talked about earlier,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and I think people will be surprised by this. I'm
- 28:13Speaker 1: going to pitch something that actually wasn't nominated that should
- 28:16Speaker 1: have been nominated, and believe it or not, A Few
- 28:20Speaker 1: Good Men, which was the movie that like really changed
- 28:23Speaker 1: my life that I saw five times in the movie theater. Um,
- 28:26Speaker 1: Aaron Sorkin was not nominated for the screenplay, and I
- 28:31Speaker 1: was always like befuddled by that, you know, I mean,
- 28:34Speaker 1: I don't know if it's because it was his play
- 28:36Speaker 1: that he adapted and they thought, well, who cares, although
- 28:39Speaker 1: they made tons of changes to turn it from a
- 28:41Speaker 1: play to a movie. And I just remember thinking like,
- 28:44Speaker 1: how could this not be nominated for screenplay? Like it
- 28:47Speaker 1: epitomizes screenplay. All it's is people talking. Um. That whole
- 28:52Speaker 1: year was like a weird coming of age year for
- 28:54Speaker 1: me because I was like die hard. A Few good
- 28:57Speaker 1: Men didn't understand why I was losing No. Unforgiven, And
- 29:00Speaker 1: then in college at USC I wrote a paper Unforgiven,
- 29:02Speaker 1: and I was like, Unforgiven the greatest movie ever made.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Now now I get it because I had grown up
- 29:07Speaker 1: a little bit. But um that I'm still giving you
- 29:09Speaker 1: two answers. Pull fiction should have beaten Forrest Gum and
- 29:12Speaker 1: a Few Good Men should have been nominated for Best
- 29:14Speaker 1: Adapted Screenplay Night to Night two. You want answers. I
- 29:17Speaker 1: think I'm entitled. You want answer the truth. You can't
- 29:21Speaker 1: handle the truth. I like your creativity. I like your
- 29:25Speaker 1: You're going outside the box. I like that you're bringing
- 29:28Speaker 1: up Aaron Sorkin and a Few Good Men, uh, which
- 29:32Speaker 1: is an automatic must watch. I have a greater responsibility
- 29:35Speaker 1: than you can possibly fathom. You are going to be
- 29:38Speaker 1: hard to beat in this round, Katie. You can try,
- 29:41Speaker 1: you know. I don't feel super confident now with that intro,
- 29:44Speaker 1: but I'll do my best. So my personal answer to
- 29:46Speaker 1: this is that get Out should have be Shape of
- 29:48Speaker 1: Water in seventeen. That's the movie I feel like people
- 29:52Speaker 1: that has stuck with folks for the longest. And no
- 29:55Speaker 1: offense to Gamel del Toro, I just didn't think Shape
- 29:57Speaker 1: Water was the best of the year. Um. But my
- 30:00Speaker 1: actual answer, because I'm pandering a little bit to both
- 30:03Speaker 1: you and listeners, um saving private Ryan over Shakespeare and love.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I can't remember what year it was, it was like
- 30:09Speaker 1: ninety six, maybe listen. It's a good answer, but it's
- 30:17Speaker 1: a cliche. It's also very obvious. Yeah, it's a total cliche.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I can't give you credit for that, Simon. So we
- 30:25Speaker 1: actually already talked about this. Uh, Titanic. People love that movie,
- 30:30Speaker 1: but do people realize that con Air came out that summer?
- 30:34Speaker 1: And when I think about star power and great movies,
- 30:37Speaker 1: con Air man Nicholas Cage just using sex, I mean
- 30:41Speaker 1: all the actors in that. There's so many big names
- 30:43Speaker 1: in Conna, especially compared to Titanic. Sorry, boss, but there's
- 30:47Speaker 1: only two men I trust one of those main it's
- 30:51Speaker 1: not you, and I was shot the budget of it.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I know everyone talks about the budget of Titanic, let's
- 30:55Speaker 1: talk about the budget of con Air. Unbelievable. All the
- 30:58Speaker 1: stuff they did in that movie. So a name that
- 31:00Speaker 1: should have won the Oscars, it's got to be listen.
- 31:04Speaker 1: That is a really that's a powerful answer. I do
- 31:08Speaker 1: love it. I feel like Conair, like in the form
- 31:12Speaker 1: of air driven disaster movies, can't hold a candle to Armageddon,
- 31:18Speaker 1: which probably also deserved an Oscar. And so I'm gonna
- 31:22Speaker 1: have to give you no credit for that. And I'm
- 31:24Speaker 1: giving Michael the win because he pandered significantly better than
- 31:29Speaker 1: either of you. By the way for the Thank you
- 31:31Speaker 1: for the record, Katie. I did think about say in
- 31:34Speaker 1: Private Ryan, it's night. But I did think about that
- 31:36Speaker 1: last night because I do think, especially in the Harvey
- 31:39Speaker 1: Weinstein you Know Me Too era, like a lot of
- 31:42Speaker 1: people already felt like Private Ryan should have won. And
- 31:44Speaker 1: then because the interging thing, Chad if I might um
- 31:48Speaker 1: about the Oscars and there was there was an article
- 31:51Speaker 1: about this recently. Somebody's tell me about that is the
- 31:53Speaker 1: year they look back in history as that is when
- 31:56Speaker 1: like hardcore campaigning started, and it was started at Harvey
- 31:59Speaker 1: Weinstein where they were like not just getting people to
- 32:01Speaker 1: see their movie, they were poisoning the well about other movies.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I think Chase Turned Love is a brilliant film and
- 32:07Speaker 1: it won a lot of Oscars that night, so it
- 32:10Speaker 1: wasn't necessary undeserving. But I've watched them both since, and
- 32:13Speaker 1: same type of Ryan I think is a better film. Simon.
- 32:16Speaker 1: I couldn't agree with you more. I thought you were
- 32:18Speaker 1: gonna say l a Confidential because that lost the Titanic.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But coon Air is a masterpiece, so good on you.
- 32:24Speaker 1: That was a joke. I'm glad you told me. Now
- 32:27Speaker 1: I got to get back to the plane I would
- 32:29Speaker 1: love to get your take, Michael on Nick Cage, because
- 32:32Speaker 1: I have a friend who is presently watching every single
- 32:34Speaker 1: Nicolas Cage movie ever released, which is a surprisingly long list,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and now has the hottest take that Nicolas Cage is
- 32:41Speaker 1: the most underrated actor in history. So he's an incredible actor.
- 32:45Speaker 1: The weird thing about Nicolas Cage I gotta go on
- 32:47Speaker 1: YouTube and find this. He he wins the Oscar leaving
- 32:52Speaker 1: Las Vegas. He's like on a red carpet somewhere, it
- 32:54Speaker 1: might have been at the Oscars, and they're literally like,
- 32:56Speaker 1: what do you want to do next? And he says,
- 32:58Speaker 1: with the straightest deface, is I want to be an
- 33:00Speaker 1: action star. And then he goes to the gym, he
- 33:03Speaker 1: gets ripped, and then he does the rock um next,
- 33:08Speaker 1: which is a masterpiece. I mean one of I saw
- 33:10Speaker 1: the movie four times that week he came out. I mean,
- 33:12Speaker 1: it's incredible. It's the only movie to ever pull off
- 33:14Speaker 1: the die Hard formula. That and Speed are the only
- 33:17Speaker 1: two movies that kind of I think evoked die Hard
- 33:20Speaker 1: in the right way. But no, Nichols Cage is a genius.
- 33:23Speaker 1: He's I mean, you know, he's got his own issues
- 33:25Speaker 1: which have been heavily documented. But he's a great, great actor. Also,
- 33:29Speaker 1: he won an Oscar. You can't be underrated if you
- 33:31Speaker 1: win an Oscar. Yeah, that's right. He made a different
- 33:34Speaker 1: path for himself. Alright, Part three, Here we go. Good
- 33:36Speaker 1: sports pass. Sports movies are great. Sports are great. Unfortunately,
- 33:40Speaker 1: sports movies are not always great. I will ask each
- 33:42Speaker 1: of you two questions about a sports movie. One good,
- 33:44Speaker 1: one bad. Speed round here Simon. Remember The Titans is
- 33:48Speaker 1: a good sports movie. But in the film, Player Alan
- 33:51Speaker 1: Bossley is not good. Despite earning Player of the Week
- 33:55Speaker 1: five times, he gives up two catches on the first
- 33:58Speaker 1: drive of the season and get benched. For a guy
- 34:01Speaker 1: who's never practiced playing cornerback. The role of Bosley was
- 34:06Speaker 1: a big Hollywood break for this young heart throb, a
- 34:10Speaker 1: two time Oscar nominee and star of the movie The Notebook.
- 34:14Speaker 1: This is why I hate the thunder Dome is I
- 34:16Speaker 1: could I've seen this name a million times now I
- 34:18Speaker 1: can't remember it is Ryan Goslin. Beautiful. Thank God, I
- 34:25Speaker 1: fucking love you for knowing that Michael as an Oscar's
- 34:28Speaker 1: expert will make this one harder for you. The Champ
- 34:31Speaker 1: was nominated for Best Picture in the nineteen thirties. The
- 34:34Speaker 1: Quiet Man, a movie about a retired boxer, was nominated
- 34:38Speaker 1: in the fifties. Okay, Since then, the Academy has nominated
- 34:42Speaker 1: four boxing movies for Best Picture for one point, name
- 34:46Speaker 1: the two that one best picture for two points? Name
- 34:50Speaker 1: all four movies nominated? Okay, the two. The one best
- 34:54Speaker 1: picture was Rocky in nineteen seventy six, Million Dollar Baby
- 34:57Speaker 1: in two thousand and four. The third one is Raging,
- 35:00Speaker 1: which was nominated, and then the fourth boxing film. You
- 35:04Speaker 1: just have to think for a second. You want to hint, Sure,
- 35:07Speaker 1: I'll take it ahead. The win, the winner, the Best
- 35:09Speaker 1: Supporting Actor came from this movie in the last fifteen years. Oh,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I'm sorry, of course The Fighter Christian Bale for The Fighter. Yeah,
- 35:18Speaker 1: how about me knowing that clue without even getting anything
- 35:20Speaker 1: in the script from Matt Mitchell. Great question, because I
- 35:24Speaker 1: don't even know. I'm not knocking the question. I don't
- 35:26Speaker 1: even know if you think of The Fighter as a
- 35:28Speaker 1: boxing movie per se, because you think of the family,
- 35:30Speaker 1: you know what I mean, You think of the sisters,
- 35:32Speaker 1: and you think of the drug addiction. But it is
- 35:34Speaker 1: a boxing movie. You're right, It's a really good boxing movie.
- 35:36Speaker 1: It's a great boxing movie. Katie. Airbud film about about
- 35:40Speaker 1: golden retriever who plays basketball. It's spurred four sequels, each
- 35:44Speaker 1: one more embarrassing than the last. I will now list
- 35:47Speaker 1: the whole franchise for fun air Bud, air Bud to
- 35:51Speaker 1: Golden Receiver, Airbud World, Pup Airbud, Seventh Inning, Fetch, Airbud
- 35:57Speaker 1: Spikes back the original film. Buddy a dog would be
- 36:01Speaker 1: game famous in real life, but appearing on this famous
- 36:04Speaker 1: Hosts Network TV show, which occasionally featured pets performing inane tricks.
- 36:15Speaker 1: But we'll find anything in there. If there's a dog
- 36:17Speaker 1: can't play, no roles for the dog can't playing basketball.
- 36:24Speaker 1: First of all, Airbud is right in my wheelhouse. I
- 36:26Speaker 1: was born in ninety four, so the Airbud franchise carried
- 36:29Speaker 1: me through childhood. Second, I have never really watched network
- 36:34Speaker 1: talk shows, so I have zero glue. Who has a dog.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I know it can't be Fallon. I know it can't
- 36:39Speaker 1: be Kimmel. I have to guess it's either j Letto
- 36:42Speaker 1: or um, Oh my god, Letterman? Is it Letterman? I'm
- 36:46Speaker 1: gonna go with Letterman. Oh my, I don't want to
- 36:49Speaker 1: give it to you because like Letterman is so anathema
- 36:53Speaker 1: to your ability to think about like late night TV shows.
- 36:56Speaker 1: But yes, it's a Letterman. Hey. His Netflix series was great.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Enjoyed that quite a bit crap. It was crap, It
- 37:02Speaker 1: was self indulgent. He wasn't the same Letterman. It was terrible.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Simon the two thousand one film Summer Catches a very
- 37:09Speaker 1: bad sports movie. This summary is quote a rich girl
- 37:12Speaker 1: summering and cape cud as a romance with a local
- 37:14Speaker 1: poor boy who hopes to become a major league ball player.
- 37:17Speaker 1: It starts Freddie Prinn's Jr. And this actress Esquire Magazine's
- 37:22Speaker 1: Sexiest Woman Alive in two thousand five and the wife
- 37:24Speaker 1: of Justin Timberlake. That's a horrible review. That's a great movie,
- 37:28Speaker 1: especially when you're in love and it's Jessica Bill. I
- 37:31Speaker 1: feel like that was her big sexual breakaway from Seventh Heaven,
- 37:34Speaker 1: so I definitely remember the shift of me watching her
- 37:37Speaker 1: on daytime TV to her making out the Freddie Prince Jr.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I was like, Wow, this is aggressive. We are learning
- 37:42Speaker 1: so much about Simon's history with the ladies through his
- 37:48Speaker 1: movies with Titanic and now Jessco Bill and seventh Heaven,
- 37:52Speaker 1: Michael should be right up your alley. The trade magazine Variety,
- 37:55Speaker 1: where Army Archard worked for many, many years, called the
- 37:58Speaker 1: nineteen seventy film Here Comes the Tigers, a direct rip
- 38:02Speaker 1: off of the Bad News Bears with dull directing and
- 38:06Speaker 1: awful acting. This g rated pile of crap was directed
- 38:10Speaker 1: by Sean Cunningham, better known for co creating directing this
- 38:14Speaker 1: famous horror film about an abandoned summer camp. Um, okay,
- 38:22Speaker 1: I mean that has to be Friday. It is Friday thirteenth.
- 38:26Speaker 1: That was a good question. That that was twisty. It
- 38:28Speaker 1: was the Yeah, Matt Mitchell's He's got a gift for
- 38:30Speaker 1: this Katie film. A League of Their Own is a
- 38:34Speaker 1: great sports movie and its poster features three of the
- 38:36Speaker 1: film stars. One is an Oscar winning actress. Oh my god,
- 38:40Speaker 1: this is great. One is a two time Oscar winning actor.
- 38:43Speaker 1: The other was an international superstar who performed the Oscar
- 38:46Speaker 1: winning song Sooner or Later from the movie Dick Tracy
- 38:52Speaker 1: that same year. Name all three stars. This is really embarrassing, actually,
- 38:56Speaker 1: because I did an oral history for A League of
- 38:59Speaker 1: Their Own at ESPN where we interviewed like the screenwriters
- 39:04Speaker 1: and a bunch of other folks, and I just you know, Okay,
- 39:07Speaker 1: it's Jeanne Davis. I know it's Madonna. And then who's
- 39:10Speaker 1: the third You're missing? Don't the third Tom Hanks? I
- 39:13Speaker 1: don't know the third. That's embarrassing. Yeah, that's probably the
- 39:17Speaker 1: easiest for anyone else. Now, I mean Tom Hanks might
- 39:22Speaker 1: have might have will be Orson Welles for you. But
- 39:25Speaker 1: you know, if it were Chet Hanks, I would have
- 39:27Speaker 1: got it immediately. That's true, exactly. So al right, here's
- 39:32Speaker 1: the prompt for the part three. Some of the worst
- 39:33Speaker 1: movies of all time have been based on a true story.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Give me your pitch for the worst sports movie imaginable
- 39:39Speaker 1: based on a true story from the last five years, Katie,
- 39:41Speaker 1: your first. The opening series between the Rockies and Dodgers
- 39:45Speaker 1: this season, there was a feral cat that ran onto
- 39:47Speaker 1: the field. There are tons of feral cats at Corus Field,
- 39:50Speaker 1: which I live like blocks from. So my idea is
- 39:53Speaker 1: to have a movie about the journey of the serial cat.
- 39:57Speaker 1: After it was collected by the security guards, apparently it
- 40:00Speaker 1: escaped from them. Where did it go next? Did it
- 40:03Speaker 1: hop on a train at Union Station right up to
- 40:05Speaker 1: the Rockies. I don't know. I'd like to find out, though,
- 40:08Speaker 1: I got a title for you. What is it? How
- 40:11Speaker 1: about the movie nobody's ever gonna want to see? No,
- 40:14Speaker 1: I saw it all over your face. It was not
- 40:16Speaker 1: it was not landing at all. Uh, signon, save us
- 40:22Speaker 1: from Katie's like horrible idea. This would this would get
- 40:25Speaker 1: her kicked out of a pitch meeting in two seconds.
- 40:28Speaker 1: That's the whole point. Though supposed to be the worst
- 40:29Speaker 1: sports movie, so I think she she knailed it. That
- 40:32Speaker 1: I was pretty it would be super boring. But also
- 40:34Speaker 1: everyone would take their children to see it, um so
- 40:38Speaker 1: for mine. I obviously I wanted to say with a
- 40:41Speaker 1: pandemic to like, that's too easy. So I would love
- 40:44Speaker 1: if they did a movie like a like a sad
- 40:46Speaker 1: story about feeling bad for the Huston Astros for cheating,
- 40:49Speaker 1: because remember Houston, like they wanted people to feel bad
- 40:51Speaker 1: for them. They're like, people are being so mean to us.
- 40:53Speaker 1: People are bowing us at these away games, calling us
- 40:55Speaker 1: cheaters scum bags. We all hate them. I would love
- 40:59Speaker 1: if they did a movie a like feeling Bad for
- 41:01Speaker 1: the Houston Astros because people would just absolutely hate that movie.
- 41:05Speaker 1: It's not bad. That is a terrible idea. But now
- 41:08Speaker 1: that I think about it, is it worse than a
- 41:10Speaker 1: movie about Ferrell cats at at the Rockies home stadium.
- 41:14Speaker 1: I don't know, Michael, I feel like this could be
- 41:16Speaker 1: right up your alley. You've probably heard so many bad ideas, Simon,
- 41:20Speaker 1: You're gonna love this. So I was. I was going
- 41:22Speaker 1: through the internet last night and thinking about what are
- 41:24Speaker 1: some weird stories and what I decided cannot make this up.
- 41:29Speaker 1: I have a very good friend named Todd Waldman who's
- 41:31Speaker 1: from Houston and is the biggest Rockets fan of all time.
- 41:35Speaker 1: But my pitch was to do like almost a Robert
- 41:39Speaker 1: Altman style, you know, like thirty character, you know, five
- 41:43Speaker 1: year story spanning of all the woes of Houston sports
- 41:48Speaker 1: of the last five years. So you have three storylines.
- 41:51Speaker 1: You have the Astros getting found out for cheating, you
- 41:54Speaker 1: have James Harden being unbelievable but never getting over the hump,
- 41:57Speaker 1: and you have j. J. Watt being unbelievable but being
- 42:00Speaker 1: on basically a bad team. So my pitch was sort
- 42:03Speaker 1: of just like doing almost like a drama about like
- 42:06Speaker 1: the state of Houston fandom. Because of my friend Todd,
- 42:10Speaker 1: So It's so funny that Simon brought up Houston, because
- 42:12Speaker 1: I was just trying to think of, like, well, what
- 42:13Speaker 1: are the sad moments sadly of sports the last couple
- 42:17Speaker 1: of years, and the Astros, I mean, that to me
- 42:20Speaker 1: was a big deal because they were like, remember when,
- 42:22Speaker 1: like they were on the cover of s I and
- 42:24Speaker 1: they were like, you know, they're gonna be the best
- 42:25Speaker 1: for the next three years because they're scouting and blah
- 42:28Speaker 1: blah blah, and it was kind of all a lot.
- 42:30Speaker 1: I kind of love that answer because I know a
- 42:33Speaker 1: lot of folks from Houston too, and I can't tell
- 42:36Speaker 1: you how many times I've sat in a bar with
- 42:39Speaker 1: friends from Houston who, before the Astros won the World Series,
- 42:44Speaker 1: would talk to me about how I'm from Chicago, what
- 42:48Speaker 1: talk to me about? How anything they're going through is
- 42:50Speaker 1: Houston sports fans is worse than anything we ever went
- 42:52Speaker 1: through as Cubs fans. And it is unbelievably boring to
- 42:57Speaker 1: listen to uninteresting because Houston is not one of those
- 42:59Speaker 1: towns anybody cares about. So I feel like this is
- 43:02Speaker 1: terrible and nobody would want to see this movie, even
- 43:05Speaker 1: like people from Houston might not want to see this movie.
- 43:08Speaker 1: It would make Michael, I'm giving it to you. Thank you.
- 43:13Speaker 1: All right, we head into the final round. Katie, I'm
- 43:16Speaker 1: surprised that you're in last place with six points. I
- 43:20Speaker 1: can't quite believe you still have not taken into account
- 43:24Speaker 1: the human factor. You're this definitely like the smartest of
- 43:28Speaker 1: everyone on this this show, So this is weird to me. Simon,
- 43:33Speaker 1: you're normally in front. As we get into the final round,
- 43:35Speaker 1: you're only at seven. Michael, you're blowing the field away
- 43:39Speaker 1: with eleven, so I'm excited for you. This is the
- 43:42Speaker 1: last round. You guys each have to tell us how
- 43:46Speaker 1: much you would like to risk. So close your eyes,
- 43:48Speaker 1: very high tech, close your eyes, hold up your fingers
- 43:51Speaker 1: with your wager amount. Here we go. At the Academy Award,
- 44:00Speaker 1: the song Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now was nominated for
- 44:04Speaker 1: Best Original Song. It did inspire a number of sports
- 44:09Speaker 1: franchises on their paths to glory. One of those teams
- 44:12Speaker 1: was the Portland's Trail Playzers, who played it during home
- 44:16Speaker 1: playoff games on their way to the NBA Finals. Unfortunately,
- 44:20Speaker 1: something did stop them the Bad Boy Pistons, but the
- 44:23Speaker 1: song's biggest champions are the Montreal Canadians, who's coach heard
- 44:27Speaker 1: it on the radio during a losing streak and distributed
- 44:29Speaker 1: cassette tapes to every player. Just as the song promised,
- 44:34Speaker 1: nothing stopped the Canadians on their way to Stanley Cup
- 44:38Speaker 1: victory over this team, who were led by a player
- 44:43Speaker 1: known as the Great One. Please submit your answers while
- 44:48Speaker 1: we listen to the song. Our answers are in Michael,
- 45:09Speaker 1: your first, Your your first first. The Great One is
- 45:12Speaker 1: Wayne Gretzky, married to Janet Jones, who was in Police
- 45:15Speaker 1: Academy five when they go to Miami. I know you
- 45:18Speaker 1: know that yet better known for her role in what
- 45:22Speaker 1: other sports themed movie? Well it's is it? Vision Quest? No?
- 45:26Speaker 1: Maybe not Vision Quest? Janet Jones started an American anthem
- 45:30Speaker 1: co starring Mitch gay Lord and that was in nine.
- 45:35Speaker 1: That's right. Oh yeah, okay, mont Martreal Canadians beat So Gretzky. Um,
- 45:41Speaker 1: well at that time, I'm just gonna take yes here.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I mean he he played for the Kings, I thought,
- 45:46Speaker 1: so I'm gonna say the l A the Kings. You
- 45:49Speaker 1: are correct, the l A Kings. How much did you
- 45:53Speaker 1: wager five? So you are now at sixteen? Oh? I
- 45:58Speaker 1: also had l A Kings, but I put all of
- 46:01Speaker 1: it in. I think I only had seven points on
- 46:02Speaker 1: at fourteen. Uh, so you're at fourteen. Well, you always
- 46:06Speaker 1: go all in, so that's pretty good for you. Yeah. Finally,
- 46:08Speaker 1: this is the only one I've gotten right in six
- 46:10Speaker 1: weeks and I lost. It's totally true. By the way,
- 46:13Speaker 1: it is the first one you've gotten right, Katie, I
- 46:18Speaker 1: played scared. I only wagered five points. My answer is
- 46:21Speaker 1: also the Kings, which I only know. I'm not a
- 46:23Speaker 1: hockey man because I spent time working at l A
- 46:26Speaker 1: news stations and was forced to learn about the Kings
- 46:30Speaker 1: and the docks. Well. Listen, as any good Susan Pacific
- 46:33Speaker 1: grad should know, you do your time at l A
- 46:36Speaker 1: news stations and you get to know all about hockey
- 46:39Speaker 1: all around Southern California. Super popular, everyone loves it. Michael,
- 46:45Speaker 1: you are the winner, amazing highlight of my life. Thank you. Listen,
- 46:54Speaker 1: this has been an endurance test and we appreciate you
- 46:57Speaker 1: taking the time. Uh, and we appreciate you lay along
- 47:01Speaker 1: You Michael Ascar are the winner of the Thursday Thunderdome
- 47:05Speaker 1: Oscar's edition. Solomon and Katie put your ship in the box.
