- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, there's something going on. I want to bounce this
- 0:02Speaker 1: off you. And Peyton, I think you got more information
- 0:03Speaker 1: on this. Would you quit without giving two weeks notice? Apparently,
- 0:08Speaker 1: younger workers are questioning the traditional two-week notice is actually necessary,
- 0:12Speaker 1: especially when companies can fire you without giving you two weeks.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Lisa, what do you think on this?
- 0:18Speaker 3: I am the type of person that actually puts in
- 0:22Speaker 3: my two weeks.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And thankfully, no one's ever fired me.
- 0:26Speaker 3: When I put my two weeks in.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Just to give them.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Time to find someone, hopefully.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Because that's kind of the thing, right? People are saying,
- 0:33Speaker 4: I know a lot of Gen Z people, I've had
- 0:35Speaker 4: friends that have done this before. It's like, why would
- 0:37Speaker 4: I put my two weeks in when they don't give
- 0:39Speaker 4: me a two weeks notice if they're going to fire
- 0:41Speaker 4: me and now I'm out of a job? So that's
- 0:43Speaker 4: where people are saying is like, do I need to
- 0:46Speaker 4: give that courtesy of giving the two weeks, especially if
- 0:49Speaker 4: I hate this place?
- 0:50Speaker 5: I think it's more along the lines of like, you
- 0:52Speaker 5: don't really want to burn.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Bridges in business.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, no, you don't have to give the two weeks,
- 0:57Speaker 5: but if you are expecting them to ever maybe, I
- 1:01Speaker 5: don't know, give you a reference for another job or
- 1:03Speaker 5: if that person goes into another business and then recognizes
- 1:05Speaker 5: you and you're trying to get a job there, it
- 1:07Speaker 5: may reflect poorly on you.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I see it a little differently.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I don't think it's about, I mean, that's a positive too,
- 1:13Speaker 1: but I think it's the new company you're going, they're
- 1:16Speaker 1: watching how you quit. So they're going to be like, oh,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you left them, you hung them out to dry. We're
- 1:20Speaker 1: not going to invest too much time in you. We
- 1:22Speaker 1: saw the way you screwed them over. So before I
- 1:24Speaker 1: hire you, that's a big problem.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:26Speaker 4: It's valid, but I find that so on point, Kyle,
- 1:29Speaker 4: that you said, like, you don't want to burn bridges
- 1:32Speaker 4: because Gen Z is like, the bridge is already on fire.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Like, this place sucks. Yeah, you know, but you know.
- 1:37Speaker 5: This place sucks, but you don't know who's working at
- 1:40Speaker 5: that sucky place that is also going, oh, this place sucks.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm going to go over here and start this business.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And then you're like, I want to work there.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And they're like, oh.
- 1:46Speaker 5: Oh, no, but I remember how you were there.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Absolutely valid. And I'm on the older end of Gen Z.
- 1:50Speaker 4: I'm 28. I have a millennial sister. And so I
- 1:54Speaker 4: have given my two weeks. Whenever I've quit or quit
- 1:56Speaker 4: in a job, I give my two weeks. But there
- 1:58Speaker 4: was one time when I was working at Topgolf and
- 2:00Speaker 4: I told him, I said, I have my two weeks in,
- 2:02Speaker 4: but I also need this day off. I'm giving it
- 2:05Speaker 4: to you a month in advance. And they refused to
- 2:07Speaker 4: give me the day off. And I was so mad.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I was like, I'm not coming back here anymore.
- 2:12Speaker 4: It was my last day of work.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But I was like, if it was earlier, I would
- 2:16Speaker 2: have left. You know what's funny?
- 2:18Speaker 1: In the chat, I said, is not giving two weeks
- 2:23Speaker 1: notice bad? We're having a debate on the air. And
- 2:25Speaker 1: I said, we're having a debate on the air. So
- 2:27Speaker 1: the chat doesn't think that I plan on quitting. So
- 2:29Speaker 1: I had to be specific that we're.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Going to be on the air. And it literally said
- 2:32Speaker 2: exactly what Kyle just said. Almost word for word.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Not giving two weeks notice isn't necessarily wrong, but it
- 2:38Speaker 1: can burn a bridge.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Wow.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So, Lisa, you've never given a day notice.
- 2:46Speaker 5: I mean, there was once I quit because I told
- 2:50Speaker 5: them I.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Couldn't work on specific days because I have an internship
- 2:54Speaker 3: while I was in college. And they told me I
- 2:57Speaker 3: had to come in.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I'm like, no, no.
- 3:00Speaker 2: They're like, well, I'm going to write you up.
- 3:01Speaker 3: So I'm like, fine, I quit.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I was actually going to put my two.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Weeks in the next day.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Because my internship was giving me like full time after that.
- 3:12Speaker 3: So I decided to quit right there.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Yeah, it's different too. If they don't want your two weeks,
- 3:18Speaker 6: that's up to the company too. But you should at
- 3:19Speaker 6: least have the politeness and business to offer.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Especially if like you're really needed at your job. Like
- 3:25Speaker 4: I feel like when you have an important role and
- 3:27Speaker 4: you kind of just like flip the desk and you're like,
- 3:29Speaker 4: I'm done. Then you leave the rest of your team hanging,
- 3:31Speaker 4: which can be a bad look. Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 5: Cause a lot of times you might have to train
- 3:34Speaker 5: the next person. Some like, well, the majority of people
- 3:36Speaker 5: around you probably don't know how to do your job.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Has anybody here ever given outside of you paying less
- 3:40Speaker 2: than two weeks?
- 3:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I have just one time and I still kind
- 3:45Speaker 5: of feel guilty about it, but I've, I've talked about
- 3:46Speaker 5: this before. I worked at a restaurant and I asked
- 3:48Speaker 5: for the weekend off to go to Vegas with my
- 3:50Speaker 5: girlfriends and they didn't let me. And then they called
- 3:52Speaker 5: me and I said, just so you know, like I'm
- 3:54Speaker 5: out of town this weekend.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And they're like, you're still on the schedule. And they
- 3:57Speaker 2: called me when.
- 3:59Speaker 5: They scheduled me and I was like literally at the
- 4:01Speaker 5: airport and I was like, I'm at the airport and
- 4:04Speaker 5: I'm not coming in.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And they're like, no show, no job.
- 4:06Speaker 5: And I'm like, good, then I'm quit. I gotta like,
- 4:07Speaker 5: I'm not coming back from the airport to come when
- 4:10Speaker 5: I told you I wasn't coming.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And I still feel kind of.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Bad about that no I've always given two weeks I
- 4:15Speaker 1: did my first job second job was at Carl's Jr.
- 4:18Speaker 1: and the guy was such a jerk he's like I'm
- 4:21Speaker 1: a jerk I know but he was using the a-hole
- 4:22Speaker 1: word I'm a big a-hole I know I am but
- 4:24Speaker 1: I need to do this I need to do that
- 4:25Speaker 1: and I was like okay and I took the box
- 4:27Speaker 1: I take these boxes out to the trash I took
- 4:29Speaker 1: them out of the trash and then I walked home.
- 4:32Speaker 2: In my Carl's Jr.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Uniform after I collected my check for $ 49 that would
- 4:38Speaker 1: be a magical place.
- 4:39Speaker 2: To work Lisa thanks for calling in thanks for listening
- 4:42Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You know, I asked Chachi Petit all this stuff, and
- 4:45Speaker 1: it's so funny because I said on the air, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: I think he knows what I do for a living.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It's come up with a whole thing. It's like, debate
- 4:50Speaker 1: of the day. Is quitting without two weeks' notice disrespectful,
- 4:54Speaker 1: or do you owe your employer absolutely nothing? Then Chachi
- 4:57Speaker 1: Petit goes on to say, my take. If the company
- 4:59Speaker 1: treated you well, give notice when reasonably possible. It's a
- 5:02Speaker 1: small professional courtesy that can protect your reputation, but I
- 5:04Speaker 1: wouldn't automatically label someone a bad person for leaving immediately.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 5:10Speaker 2: One important distinction.
- 5:11Speaker 1: In Arizona, two weeks notice generally isn't legally required or
- 5:15Speaker 1: for ordinary at-will employment, although a contract or particular circumstance
- 5:19Speaker 1: may change that.
- 5:20Speaker 6: Interesting.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Interesting. Dan. Yes, hello. Hey, so you got a quitting
- 5:28Speaker 2: in less than two weeks story?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Quitting in less than like two minutes story.
- 5:32Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 5:32Speaker 2: What happened?
- 5:33Speaker 3: So I was working for the sandwich shop. It was
- 5:36Speaker 3: like a mom and pop like cheesesteak place, right? And
- 5:42Speaker 3: I made sandwiches. That's what they trade me on. That's
- 5:45Speaker 3: what I knew how to do. And then it was
- 5:47Speaker 3: really busy. And our fry cook person who made fries
- 5:51Speaker 3: didn't show up. And they're like, hey, yo, can you
- 5:53Speaker 3: just jump on fryer? And I was like, I don't
- 5:55Speaker 3: know how to do this. Like, well, I don't. I
- 5:58Speaker 3: could burn myself. Like, what am I supposed to do?
- 6:01Speaker 3: They're like, just figure it out. And I was like, OK,
- 6:03Speaker 3: so I'm trying my best. I'm getting like undercooked fries.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I'm getting overcooked fries. The kitchen is Like, filling with smoke. And, like,
- 6:13Speaker 3: they're yelling at me. They're like, come on, man.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Where's those fries?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Like, hey, I needed these before.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Like, what are you doing?
- 6:19Speaker 3: And then at one point, one of my bosses goes,
- 6:21Speaker 3: this is not for you. This is not for you.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And I was like, you're right.
- 6:24Speaker 2: It's not.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Took off my apron, dropped it, walked out.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Oh, wow. Very similar. Very similar to my Carl's Jr. story.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Very similar.
- 6:34Speaker 6: It's a timeline.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It's a trajectory that matches. It's like a fast food thing.
- 6:37Speaker 4: But that feeling sometimes when you just stand on business
- 6:40Speaker 4: and you're like, I'm out of here. I'm tired of
- 6:42Speaker 4: people treating me like this. And you just leave that
- 6:45Speaker 4: power that you feel when you walk out.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I almost did that yesterday during Minute to Win It.
- 6:51Speaker 6: I don't think I grew up in a generation that
- 6:54Speaker 6: we thought we have an opinion on standing on business.
- 6:57Speaker 2: You just do what you're told.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Things have changed.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess so. All right, Dan. Thanks for calling in, brother.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Thanks for listening.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Thanks. Appreciate you guys.
