ward: Back to the movie at hand, we'll be getting deep in the goo with you to discuss
• 1:03
ward: Gremlins 2, The New Batch.
• 1:05
ward: Released in 1990, like the first film, it was directed by Joe Dante and starred
• 1:09
ward: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, John Glover, Robert Prowski, Christopher Lee, and Robert Picardo.
• 1:16
ward: With me tonight are Bill and Evan. How y'all doing?
• 1:19
  bill: Doing okay.
• 1:20
  Evan: I'm good.
• 1:22
  bill: The goo,
• 1:25
bill: that was an uncomfortable intro.
• 1:28
ward: Yeah i like i i was reading it in prep i was like goo with you i was like he
• 1:36
ward: he was really going for that,
• 1:40
ward: he wanted the extra emphasis on goo i was like i'll give it to him i'll give it to him whatever.
• 1:47
bill: Gremlins also can't get wet or eat after midnight it's not just magui.
• 1:53
  Evan: Yeah that's That's true. That's true.
• 1:55
bill: I'm just saying, so if you're a gremlin, you won't listen to us anyway because
• 1:59
bill: you're a gremlin and gremlins don't listen to anybody.
• 2:02
bill: But, you know, we would request, please don't get wet or eat after midnight.
• 2:06
Evan: Just to the general well-being of the people around you.
• 2:11
Evan: And for anyone who wants to listen to an episode on the first Gremlins,
• 2:15
Evan: you can go back and do that as well from, oddly enough, October 7th,
• 2:19
Evan: 2025. And I think this might be coming out October 6th, 2026.
• 2:25
Evan: So, perfect. Boy, this is the first time you saw this, so I want to hear what you have to say first.
• 2:29
ward: This was a fucking trip. Yeah, I've never seen it. I've seen the first one quite
• 2:33
ward: a few times. Like, I wouldn't say it like I'm a Gremlins expert.
• 2:37
ward: it was like but oh this was just so wild just going into it it's like all right
• 2:41
ward: you know gremlins pretty easy concept shouldn't be hard this should be a layup sequel like,
• 2:48
ward: and then it just gets immediately taken so hard off the rails like halfway through
• 2:53
ward: i'm just like what the fuck just happened yeah.
• 2:58
Evan: The middle middle third to the final third are just yeah.
• 3:03
bill: I the entire film it's.
• 3:06
Evan: From the beginning it is.
• 3:08
ward: Like even from the beginning it's definitely over the top and you're like oh
• 3:11
ward: they're they're not going the exact same direction with this one than they did with the,
• 3:18
ward: first one especially like you get that revolving door bit like pretty much right
• 3:22
ward: off rip and you're like okay all right yeah.
• 3:26
bill: I think simply when he shows up at mr wing's building his his business with a TV VCR,
• 3:36
bill: to play a recording of the CEO of Clamp Industries, that is it.
• 3:42
bill: You're two minutes in. And then he just goes, you can keep the TV and leaves.
• 3:46
bill: Like right off the bat, it's just absurd.
• 3:50
Evan: The premise, the very baseline premise of this movie is it takes place a couple
• 3:55
Evan: of years later than the first one where we have the two main characters,
• 3:59
Evan: Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, have now moved to New York to work at this ridiculous
• 4:05
Evan: building called the Clamp Center where Zach Galligan is as an...
• 4:09
Evan: What would you say his job is exactly?
• 4:12
Evan: Concept designer. Concept designer. Yeah, that's the right one.
• 4:15
Evan: Whereas his girlfriend, or I guess they say his fiancée, Phoebe Cates' character,
• 4:19
Evan: Kate, she is basically a tour guide in the building and wears a funny hat of
• 4:23
Evan: the building. Oh, really demeaning.
• 4:24
Evan: Yeah, very demeaning. Her job is not cool. And they work in this building from
• 4:29
Evan: this billionaire, Daniel Clamp, who owns a company called Clamp Industries.
• 4:32
Evan: And let's, I need to throw out at the beginning what they're throwing at you
• 4:35
Evan: is you already said that he's trying to buy up all this part of Chinatown to
• 4:40
Evan: build his extremely racist Chinese concept building.
• 4:45
Evan: And the logo for his company is a sea with a clamp around like the United,
• 4:50
Evan: it's not the United States, the world globe.
• 4:53
  bill: The earth.
• 4:54
Evan: Earth, like squished. Like they are just destroying the world like most companies do.
• 5:00
Evan: And it just goes off from there.
• 5:03
Evan: Gizmo, who is still at this little shop in Chinatown, ends up getting picked
• 5:09
Evan: up by someone who works at a, what do you call it?
• 5:12
Evan: He works at the genetics lab. Yeah, genetics lab in the building.
• 5:16
Evan: So the building is not just an office building. It has a mall,
• 5:20
Evan: restaurants, bars, and just ridiculous tenants. And then everything goes off the rails.
• 5:25
  bill: It's a mixed-use complex.
• 5:27
Evan: A miss yes but the building is also residences in there yeah the resident and
• 5:32
Evan: and very specifically the building is supposed to be high tech like the the
• 5:36
Evan: everything is voice activated you get in the elevator you just say what floor you want,
• 5:40
Evan: You, you know, it's, and this is 1990. This is pretty advanced,
• 5:45
Evan: would be advanced for the time.
• 5:46
bill: Yeah. The, so I think one of the most important, I, I don't think watching this
• 5:54
bill: movie without knowing the backstory is an effective way to watch this movie.
• 6:00
bill: I think you need to know the meta, like behind this film to really understand
• 6:07
bill: what is like why it works.
• 6:10
bill: Like, if you don't understand that Joe Dante didn't want to make this movie,
• 6:15
bill: and then basically demanded full, complete creative control as a way to say,
• 6:20
bill: fuck you to Warner Brothers and CEOs in general.
• 6:23
  Evan: He had Final Cut.
• 6:24
  bill: And Final Cut, yeah.
• 6:26
bill: If you don't understand that, this hits way, like it has less of an impact.
• 6:33
bill: When you understand that, you're like, oh, all of the choices that he's made,
• 6:38
bill: are deliberate choices to mock people in power who are CEOs who work behind
• 6:46
bill: the scenes and have no concept of how the real people live or how anything actually functions.
• 6:52
bill: when you understand that you're like oh nothing about this movie is like this
• 6:57
bill: movie did not make its budget back but it was a success because joe dante did
• 7:02
bill: exactly what he wanted which was to skewer everybody in it.
• 7:07
Evan: The fact that this movie came out is the success yeah that's and then the other
• 7:12
Evan: thing too so one of the most hilarious scenes i actually tried to record it
• 7:16
Evan: on my phone or i did record my phone i was going to post it online,
• 7:19
Evan: but they have one of the appearances is a actual film critic named leonard malton who,
• 7:25
Evan: so part of this building is also lots of film studios doing different shows
• 7:30
Evan: which are all really funny but one is this film show where this guy is saying
• 7:35
Evan: basically this film critic is saying like why would they make this stupid movie
• 7:38
Evan: called gremlins about monsters that get wet and
• 7:41
Evan: no one likes this shit and then he gets like destroyed by a bunch of the the
• 7:44
Evan: gremlins like from behind and it's just yeah it's uh.
• 7:48
ward: I mean that seems great because he's like talking about like why would they re re-release.
• 7:54
  Evan: This on vhs.
• 7:55
ward: Like it wasn't that good of a movie in the.
• 7:57
  Evan: First place.
• 7:58
ward: Like oh is this just like a heartless.
• 8:00
Evan: Cash grab kind of thing.
• 8:04
bill: It's fantastic dante specifically like so for you know for those who are unfamiliar,
• 8:13
bill: So the original Gremlins was a financial success.
• 8:19
bill: Warner Brothers asked Joe Dante to make a sequel right away.
• 8:24
bill: Uh, Dante declined because he saw Gremlins is having a proper ending and he
• 8:30
bill: literally was like, the only reason you would make a sequel is as a cash grab.
• 8:36
bill: That's the only reason. And I don't see why it's necessary.
• 8:40
bill: We don't need this. The only reason you're doing this is because you want to make money.
• 8:44
bill: and as the creator you know the director i don't feel the point like and so
• 8:49
bill: he literally like malton actually if i remember correctly uh,
• 8:56
bill: let me look up real quick i believe malton also uh leonard malton also uh reviewed um.
• 9:06
bill: The original he he had denounced the original gremlins in real life like he had panned,
• 9:16
bill: it like dante held back nothing um,
• 9:20
bill: and for this for that scene particular dante has been credited by at least one
• 9:25
bill: person as one of contemporary cinema's great pranksters um literally everything about this so,
• 9:33
bill: this was in i mean not development hell because It really never got there,
• 9:38
bill: but it was, like, talked about for a while.
• 9:41
bill: And basically, even in the end, Dante agreed to do this because,
• 9:47
bill: like, this is—the level of pettiness is incredible.
• 9:52
bill: The reason Dante agreed to make Gremlins 2 in the end was because, in his opinion—,
• 9:59
bill: the public's attention or desire for a sequel to gremlins had so far gone that
• 10:06
bill: this was bound to fail like he was basically like all right fine i'll do it
• 10:11
bill: now because it's gonna suck,
• 10:16
  bill: you're.
• 10:16
  ward: Gonna.
• 10:17
bill: Eat this like he literally waited until it wouldn't be a success to do it.
• 10:23
Evan: Yeah they well and as we're recording this they've already released am i saying
• 10:28
Evan: by teaser it's like basically nothing they're making a gremlins 3.
• 10:32
ward: Yeah directed by chris columbus who wrote.
• 10:35
Evan: The original who people know from many many.
• 10:38
bill: That has been in production that is you could call that in development hell
• 10:43
bill: gremlins 3 has been in talks or like pre-production for,
• 10:50
bill: i think fucking like 20 years at least.
• 10:54
Evan: Easily yeah and didn't they make a tv show about the show about gremlins i never actually.
• 11:01
ward: So it's like an animated show i never saw it.
• 11:03
Evan: I didn't either but you're right though the third one has been yeah go ahead.
• 11:07
ward: Yeah no see i didn't know anything about that stuff that bill was just talking
• 11:11
ward: about like the whole background to this like i don't know,
• 11:14
ward: gremlins was cool i didn't wasn't overly hyped about it and then hopping into
• 11:18
ward: this like i could definitely tell that there was something going on and i was
• 11:21
ward: like i'm just gonna let it ride like this is this is a great fucking ride this
• 11:24
ward: is so funny like i'm not gonna sit there and try to,
• 11:28
ward: make sense of it all because this doesn't want me to but it it's a vehicle for.
• 11:33
bill: Dante to mock ceos and production companies.
• 11:38
Evan: But more than that, he mocks.
• 11:41
  ward: Does it well.
• 11:42
Evan: There's so many small little bits that probably the average person sees it.
• 11:47
Evan: And like, it's like, it's funny a little bit, but the first one,
• 11:50
Evan: well, there's a lot of bits.
• 11:52
Evan: One that like Billy's character played by Zach Galligan, he talks about like
• 11:56
Evan: how he can't get promoted.
• 11:58
Evan: And like, he's sort of the company just seems like it treats everyone like shit.
• 12:03
Evan: The CEO like doesn't even show up to the office. He's always sending people videotapes of himself.
• 12:09
Evan: Obviously, if this had been in like the era of Zoom, it would just be like him on a screen.
• 12:14
Evan: They also have the building has complete mass surveillance. Okay.
• 12:18
Evan: There's cameras everywhere, like the bathroom everywhere. There's just maybe
• 12:23
Evan: not bathroom. Well, there's a lot of cameras.
• 12:26
ward: Early up, it do be talking to you and in the bathroom.
• 12:29
bill: Yeah. I think the bathroom is the only place that there are not cameras because
• 12:33
bill: Billy does take Gizmo out of the toolbox that he hides in the bathroom.
• 12:40
ward: Yeah, it might not be able to see, but they replaced it that they can talk to you.
• 12:42
Evan: And then the maintenance guy is like walking along fixing the water fountain
• 12:46
Evan: when Gizmo gets wet for the first time.
• 12:48
Evan: And he's basically talking about how the fucking CEO of the company makes a
• 12:52
Evan: bunch of money just in the bathroom doing nothing while he makes shit.
• 12:56
Evan: that he's just throwing it in their face being like the ceo of warner brothers
• 13:00
Evan: or and it's not warner brothers for this case right it's um no he's warner brothers
• 13:03
Evan: warner brothers making millions of dollars and this guy on the set of this movie
• 13:08
Evan: in one scene got paid probably like a hundred you know whatever
• 13:11
Evan: whatever the lowest prices for someone.
• 13:13
bill: The day right he got the day right.
• 13:15
Evan: That was the word i was trying to think of but they're just constantly just,
• 13:18
Evan: ripping on ceo and worker.
• 13:20
bill: More than that, though, it is also like, so this was, you know, it was released in 1990.
• 13:29
bill: So 1990, you know, was very early on in the computer era.
• 13:37
bill: Um, and this movie is incredibly prescient in a lot of ways in terms of mass
• 13:46
  bill: surveillance, building automation,
• 13:50
bill: um, the, and the man, the way in which companies use all those things,
• 13:55
bill: but also like this movie exists before the term and shitification like was coined.
• 14:04
bill: And it is already showing the concept of inshittification. It's basically, it's like, he.
• 14:13
bill: Basically, like, predicted the idea of inshittification within home, like, automation.
• 14:20
bill: And the way companies constantly shove this stuff into products and our lives without any say.
• 14:31
bill: and it doesn't work and it makes everything harder than it should be,
• 14:36
bill: and it's so prescient in the term you know like literally two days ago or a
• 14:42
bill: day ago there was a headline,
• 14:45
bill: which said uh consumers mourn the mourn spoiled food after samsung smart tv.
• 14:54
bill: Update bricks their their refrigerators samsung update bricks their refrigerators,
• 15:02
bill: and so it just shut off and all their food was destroyed,
• 15:05
bill: so everybody with the samsung smart refrigerator who got this update it bricked
• 15:11
bill: their refrigerator and they lost all their food and it's like,
• 15:14
bill: this is 1990 way before any concept like way before there was any notion of
• 15:21
bill: the smart you know like publicly like in like product, the concepts like smart,
• 15:26
bill: like utilities or the appliances or anything like that.
• 15:29
bill: And here's Dante and Haas, the writer,
• 15:33
bill: very, very presciently like predicting exactly the kind of shit that will be
• 15:40
bill: sold to us exactly the way it will not work.
• 15:45
bill: and how it will be used against the consumer and against the worker.
• 15:51
bill: It is, watching this today is incredible.
• 15:54
Evan: You don't, there's only, I think only two scenes in the entire,
• 15:58
Evan: maybe three scenes in the entire film that take place outside of the building.
• 16:03
Evan: And one of them is their apartment that, you know, they go home briefly because
• 16:07
Evan: the family who's in the original movie comes to visit them who had been terrorized
• 16:12
  Evan: by the original gremlin.
• 16:13
Evan: and then there's also a scene i think uh maybe in the fudermans yeah the fudermans
• 16:18
Evan: like there's also the scene where he gets attacked by the the the bat one in
• 16:22
Evan: the and like in front of the cathedral,
• 16:24
Evan: which i always was always like a scary scene to me as a child everything is
• 16:27
Evan: everything takes place in that building everything is within work you're you're
• 16:32
Evan: not allowed to really leave it feels like they're forced to
• 16:35
Evan: you know billy has to get sexually uh you know harassed or assaulted really by his boss,
• 16:42
Evan: at a weird restaurant everything feels yeah.
• 16:45
ward: Yeah no i like i like how it work it's just it's just like bill saying just
• 16:50
ward: so terrible it's like oh hey he has a nice drawing of where he grew up and it's like no no this is the.
• 16:54
Evan: Corporate approved art that scene is crazy.
• 16:58
bill: He has a plant and they throw it out.
• 17:00
ward: Yeah. Throw away the plant because it could have an aphid infestation.
• 17:04
ward: But at the same time, it's like what Bill's saying. It's like,
• 17:07
ward: oh, he tries to make a fucking call on the phone. Phones doesn't fucking work.
• 17:11
ward: Why does fucking Gizmo even get wet in the fucking first place?
• 17:14
ward: Because they didn't listen to the janitor, the subject matter expert on which
• 17:17
ward: fucking models they should fucking use for the water fountains.
• 17:21
bill: Yeah. And I think the fact that Gizmo, Gizmo has like three scenes.
• 17:27
bill: he's barely in it gizmo's barely.
• 17:29
ward: In this movie it's honestly hilarious how little he is in this.
• 17:33
bill: Movie and i really think that is also like it is never it is never indicated
• 17:38
bill: it is never you know it's never stated by dante in anything i've ever read that
• 17:41
bill: this is deliberate but i think that is i think it was deliberate,
• 17:45
bill: that you know he's like fine i'll make this and you'll never see fucking gizmo to,
• 17:51
  bill: the yeah.
• 17:52
ward: Basically you we think we're even going to get like a rambo fucking training
• 17:57
ward: montage and it's like no you just get two extra.
• 17:59
  bill: Scenes yeah.
• 18:01
Evan: They told i totally thought they're
• 18:03
Evan: gonna because they showed the rambo multiple times in the in the movie,
• 18:08
Evan: and you think oh like he's gonna do something sweet as hell and he just puts
• 18:11
Evan: on the little bandana and he shoots his little paper clip bow and arrow once and he's like that's it.
• 18:18
bill: Which I think is also a great scene because, so he shoots his paperclip bow
• 18:26
bill: with the flaming arrow at the mutated,
• 18:31
  bill: gremlin, who's originally Spike.
• 18:33
  ward: Spider gremlin.
• 18:34
bill: The spider gremlin. So, all right, to backtrack a little bit,
• 18:38
bill: part of all of the chaos of all this is, so, as Evan stated,
• 18:44
bill: Gizmo is found by one of the scientists that works for the genetics laboratory,
• 18:51
bill: who we also find out later has cloned himself.
• 18:56
ward: And who's in my notes as Allie Creep, and then later addressed as,
• 19:01
ward: oh, there's two of them now.
• 19:02
bill: That guy is super creepy. You know he's a perv. Like, there's no way.
• 19:07
  bill: That guy's a pervert. I'm sorry.
• 19:08
Evan: You also have to add that the head of the lab is Christopher Lee, which is awesome.
• 19:12
  bill: Yes. Christopher Lee.
• 19:14
  Evan: Continue.
• 19:14
bill: Whose last name is Catheter.
• 19:19
bill: It's never addressed. It's just a great, just like, it's Dr.
• 19:23
bill: Catheter. It is never addressed in the film.
• 19:25
Evan: Cushing Catheter. Cushing Catheter. Yes, I'm sorry.
• 19:28
bill: Cushing Catheter. It's just, it's great. Um, so he is, Gizmo is kidnapped after,
• 19:35
bill: uh, Mr. Wing dies and they knock his building down.
• 19:40
bill: Um, and with everything in it, nothing is empty. They just knock the building down.
• 19:47
bill: Gizmo's in the building when they knock it down and he runs outside and alley
• 19:52
bill: creep, um, or alley perv.
• 19:56
bill: grabs gizmo and he says something incredibly i think classist which is i always
• 20:03
bill: say do you want to find something weird go downtown which just feels there's
• 20:08
  bill: definitely something there um,
• 20:11
bill: they bring him back to the lab they bring him back to the lab,
• 20:15
bill: um and where we are introduced to what's going on in this lab which is they're
• 20:20
bill: just doing all kinds of weird genetic experiments um in 1990 the notion of genetic experimentation was,
• 20:28
bill: much in this you know public consciousness was a big thing um,
• 20:33
bill: it was like the nascent kind of
• 20:34
bill: thing i mean this is around the time of jurassic park all of that stuff um,
• 20:40
bill: which factors heavily into the film later because the gremlins go into the lab
• 20:47
bill: and then start to consume,
• 20:49
bill: because apparently you could just bottle genetic manipulation and then just
• 20:53
bill: you just you just drink it and it works.
• 20:56
bill: Uh so you're thinking too much about this movie no i'm saying that's how it
• 21:01
bill: works this that's how this is advanced science you you bottle it um i love the
• 21:06
bill: lab they just have a cow walk through at one point with a like a uh,
• 21:11
bill: a mind reading device that it can like it projects its thoughts and it's just
• 21:15
bill: talking about making milk it's just,
• 21:18
bill: mentally it's just they just lead a cow through the lab um.
• 21:25
bill: And so they break into the lab and they start consuming genetic material.
• 21:28
bill: So one of the gremlins consumes brain hormones. So he becomes super smart and he talks.
• 21:36
bill: He also spontaneously grows glasses, which I love.
• 21:40
bill: He goes below, he cuts out of scene and then comes back up with glasses on and
• 21:45
bill: then starts speaking very eruditely.
• 21:51
bill: One of them becomes electric. One of them becomes vegetables.
• 22:01
bill: One of them consumes bat DNA, so he grows wings, and then brain gremlin gives
• 22:06
bill: him genetic sunblock. So now gremlins normally die from sunlight.
• 22:13
bill: This one does not, which is why it's able to go outside, fly around, and attack.
• 22:18
  ward: It becomes a daywalker.
• 22:19
bill: Right, it's a daywalker. It's a daywalker gremlin. And he can attack Mr.
• 22:22
bill: Futterman, once it's out there.
• 22:28
bill: And then one of them becomes a girl.
• 22:34
Evan: Is this a prequel to Blade?
• 22:37
bill: And one of them consumes some kind of gender-switching genetic thing and becomes
• 22:44
bill: a woman gremlin, or Grimlina, as they call her in the material. And then...
• 22:52
  ward: Grimlina.
• 22:53
bill: Big bad one, who is Spike, later on consumes spider DNA and becomes a spider
• 23:01
bill: gremlin, who later on Rambo Gizmo kills.
• 23:06
Evan: I'm going to ask a question that is going to prove that I'm thinking about this way too much.
• 23:11
Evan: In the building, they have, like, salad bars and ice cream place.
• 23:15
Evan: Like, there's also a really funny scene where someone's ordering a bunch of
• 23:18
Evan: ice cream. It's frozen yogurt. Oh, sorry. Frozen yogurt. And they're asking, like— Yeah.
• 23:21
ward: I was about to say, why else would they say this is supposed to be health food?
• 23:25
  Evan: True, true.
• 23:25
bill: Because the 1990s— Not that frozen yogurt. The 1990s was the original fro-yo craze.
• 23:31
Evan: You're right. I was like, what is it? The Thank God It's Not Yogurt chain? TCBI.
• 23:37
  bill: TCBY.
• 23:38
  Evan: TC.
• 23:38
  bill: Yeah. What was that?
• 23:40
Evan: What was it called? tcby but for some reason somehow the gremlins always would
• 23:45
Evan: just pop out of the toppings and the salad bars yeah how did they get there
• 23:49
Evan: in the first place there's no bottom it's just a sneaky.
• 23:53
bill: Yeah they just they just crawled in there they hid.
• 23:56
Evan: But no one saw them crawl in but they saw them crawl out i don't buy it dude.
• 23:58
ward: The the janitor one of the arguably smartest most understanding characters rode
• 24:05
ward: the elevator with three of them.
• 24:08
  bill: That's true.
• 24:09
  Evan: That's that's true.
• 24:12
Evan: They're sneaky. I'm just being
• 24:14
Evan: pedantic, but I just love that they're everywhere in the entire building.
• 24:18
bill: They deliberately do that because they didn't want to be seen crawling in.
• 24:23
bill: They wanted to be seen coming out because that's when it's scary.
• 24:27
Evan: They were thinking of the people.
• 24:28
bill: No, they were thinking of us
• 24:30
bill: at home. They were thinking of scaring people because that's what they do.
• 24:34
bill: All right. Which of the gremlins was your favorite gremlin, Ward?
• 24:38
bill: Which is your favorite gremlin?
• 24:41
  ward: The googly-eyed one.
• 24:42
  bill: Okay.
• 24:42
  Evan: All right.
• 24:43
bill: That's an interesting choice. All right.
• 24:46
ward: He was just so ridiculous. And I was just like, he's the one who also just was
• 24:50
ward: like, okay, yeah, we're really setting in tone for this movie.
• 24:53
  bill: Okay.
• 24:54
ward: I can sit back and enjoy. I know I'm not going to have to really critically
• 24:58
ward: analyze this. This is just going to be a great fun time that's self-deprecating
• 25:04
ward: and self-aware. And, oh, there's also going to be shitting on other people.
• 25:07
ward: Oh, I'm here for that too. Let's do this.
• 25:09
bill: Which is the scariest gremlin, dude.
• 25:11
  ward: Spider gremlin?
• 25:13
bill: I know Evan is Spider-Gremlin.
• 25:15
Evan: Spider-Gremlin is the scariest. My favorite Gremlin, though,
• 25:17
Evan: when I was a kid, especially, and I still think it holds up,
• 25:20
Evan: is just the Brain-Gremlin, the smart one.
• 25:22
Evan: I remember just watching the trailers and just seeing him talk.
• 25:25
Evan: He does the little talk show later. I think he's funny. He has a funny voice.
• 25:28
  bill: He's hilarious.
• 25:29
ward: He would have been my favorite, but then he sings. And so I was like,
• 25:33
ward: I could have done it without the singing. I get it.
• 25:35
bill: He does pay the ultimate price for singing, though.
• 25:37
Evan: Yeah. Wait, do you know who plays his voice? Oh, it's Tony Randall. yeah.
• 25:44
bill: Actually do you know who plays.
• 25:44
  Evan: Great i just he's funny he's he's he's just funny like it's just he's the comic
• 25:49
Evan: relief of like the things that are ridiculous but he's just adding a layer to
• 25:53
Evan: it do you know who plays the voice.
• 25:55
  bill: Of uh spike.
• 25:57
Evan: I think i do actually um.
• 26:00
bill: It's frank weller voice of.
• 26:02
  Evan: Mechatron oh yeah.
• 26:04
  bill: Classic Transformers voice, Megatron.
• 26:09
bill: My favorite was always the Bat Gremlin.
• 26:14
bill: I always really loved the Bat Gremlin, and I love how he turns into a gargoyle.
• 26:19
bill: And I actually always thought that the electrical one was the scariest.
• 26:23
Evan: He could really fuck you up.
• 26:24
bill: Yeah. I mean, he is the, you know, spoilers for the end. He's what kills all
• 26:30
bill: of the gremlins in the end.
• 26:32
Evan: Because he gets he gets stuck in a phone call on old which is so great that's
• 26:38
Evan: like but it's such a oh god their phone system is so fucked up and they get stuck in the phone oh man.
• 26:44
ward: That's just something you can only do with landline.
• 26:46
Evan: Systems yeah complicated landline systems another thing that i thought was uh
• 26:52
Evan: that we have to talk about because we're talking about being this movie is lots
• 26:56
Evan: of layered satire and parody and all of that.
• 27:00
Evan: One of the most ridiculous things that happens is that the gremlins fuck up
• 27:05
Evan: the VHS. And this reminds me of Spaceballs, like a kind of a gag from Spaceballs,
• 27:10
Evan: when they don't know where to find them, and so they get the VHS of the movie
• 27:13
Evan: they're watching to find them.
• 27:15
Evan: And it ends up being that they're at like a movie theater, and the gremlins
• 27:18
Evan: are in the projector room, fucking with the film.
• 27:22
Evan: So the people can't watched gremlins 2 in the theater once it's actually been
• 27:26
Evan: released in the movie about that is gremlins 2 and then they had to ruin it with hulk hogan.
• 27:31
bill: Unfortunately yeah but this was before we yeah.
• 27:33
ward: That shit hit me like a flash yeah like holy.
• 27:36
bill: Fuck that's all but that's before we knew anything that's before of course of
• 27:41
bill: course this was for for okay oh yeah no for those of you who You are in the 1990,
• 27:48
bill: Hulk Hogan was beloved and we didn't know he was a union busting racist piece of shit.
• 27:55
bill: You know, nobody, nobody knew this. This was all, you know, this is before all,
• 28:00
bill: you know, people knew about Hulk Hogan and he, so speaking of the janitor though,
• 28:04
bill: do you know who the janitor is played by?
• 28:08
bill: There are so many Caneos in this film, it's insane. He's a legend.
• 28:14
bill: The guy that plays the janitor is a fucking legend.
• 28:17
  bill: It's Harry Astin, who...
• 28:19
  Evan: That's crazy.
• 28:20
  bill: Original Gomez...
• 28:22
bill: Um, you know, uh, father to Sean Astin.
• 28:26
bill: Um, yeah, he, this voice is the filled with cameo.
• 28:31
Evan: They also have, well, do you know who is the voice for Gizmo?
• 28:37
ward: Yeah. That was another flashbang that I got hit with when the credits rolled
• 28:41
ward: and it was like, Howie Mandel.
• 28:44
  Evan: So funny.
• 28:44
  ward: Like, oh shit.
• 28:46
bill: Bright light. Oh, bright light.
• 28:49
  Evan: Oh man.
• 28:50
bill: It was my first voicing acting.
• 28:52
Evan: It's so weird that he was like kind of a comedian guy in his early days.
• 28:58
bill: Well, he did voiceovers. He did Bobby's World.
• 29:00
  Evan: Yeah.
• 29:00
  bill: Cartoon Bobby's World.
• 29:02
Evan: Yeah. And now he's America's Got Talent. Is that what he does now?
• 29:05
  bill: I have.
• 29:06
ward: Why would I know that?
• 29:08
bill: You know what I know about Hala Nantel? I know that I believe it was,
• 29:12
bill: oh shit, was it Marc Maron? Oh no, I believe it was Bill Burr who went on his
• 29:15
bill: podcast and basically called him a bad father to his face.
• 29:21
bill: it was it was him or mark maron i can't remember who but like i know i think
• 29:24
bill: it was bill bar who basically straight up told him he's like you're a bad father
• 29:27
bill: because how mandel has a podcast with his daughter and on the episode he admitted
• 29:32
bill: to taking the door off her room,
• 29:35
bill: and he was like you're a bad father that's what that says he's like it sounds
• 29:39
bill: like you fucking abused your daughter that's what it sounds like.
• 29:42
Evan: That's so weird there's so many funny gags too in this i don't know,
• 29:48
Evan: i i always when i was a kid i always liked i think because they maybe they showed
• 29:51
Evan: in the trailer where one of them sets up a train in the toy store and they put
• 29:54
Evan: gizmo on the tracks and it you know run that's like one of the all like the
• 29:58
Evan: other one of the four times you see him in the movie he gets hit by the little toy train.
• 30:02
bill: Because they're torturing him which again to go back to the when when gizmo
• 30:08
bill: kills the spider gremlin phoebe cates's character says you know of like what happened to him.
• 30:16
bill: And Billy, Zach Allingham, he says, I think they pushed him too far.
• 30:23
bill: And I think like, I can't help but think that that is Dante specifically calling
• 30:30
bill: out basically. It's like, he's like, Gizmo is barely going to show up in this.
• 30:35
bill: Um, Gizmo is barely going to show up in this.
• 30:38
bill: And when he is going to show up, he's going to show up. I'm either going to torture him.
• 30:43
bill: Like you're making me do to my story and the character I originally wrote,
• 30:47
bill: or he's going to brutalize something.
• 30:51
bill: And then like commentary on that. Like it is so layered in my opinion.
• 30:57
bill: Like it is incredibly layered.
• 30:59
bill: And again, I think it is, it is much, it is so well served by understanding the story behind it.
• 31:07
bill: Um, and again, like I, I honestly, I don't, I love this movie and I love the original Gremlins.
• 31:14
bill: I, my name is Bill. The character in this is Billy.
• 31:19
bill: I grew up on Gremlins and like, he's an artist. I grew up wanting to be an artist
• 31:24
bill: like this. These movies meant a lot to me when I was, I had gizmo sheets.
• 31:29
bill: As my wife said, there's nothing, you know, nothing more dear to a 90s child
• 31:35
bill: than the character sheets they had, you know, and I had gizmo sheets.
• 31:41
bill: And I've watched this movie so many times. I watched the original Gremlins many times.
• 31:47
bill: and it's even having watched them so many times re-watching this now it is,
• 31:54
bill: so incredibly prescient it is such an impact in compared to,
• 32:01
bill: today's day and age with figures like elon musk and jeff bezos and the shit
• 32:06
bill: and how you can compare them to daniel clamp people like that didn't exist in
• 32:12
bill: the 90s, not in the same way.
• 32:14
bill: And Clamp- Not publicly, anyway. No. Clamp-
• 32:19
bill: They weren't public figures in the same way. And Clamp so perfectly embodies
• 32:26
bill: what the tech oligarch has become in the modern day,
• 32:32
bill: and so perfectly predicts the fucking dystopia we live in now.
• 32:39
bill: Because make no bones about it, we live in a fucking tech oligarchy dystopia.
• 32:45
bill: And Dante and Haas made a movie in 1990 that perfectly encapsulates the absurdity
• 32:54
bill: of the fucking dystopia we live in now.
• 32:57
Evan: The way they depict him too, I mean, obviously he wears like really goofy clothing
• 33:01
Evan: and he's really eccentric, but he doesn't seem to, doesn't, he doesn't do anything.
• 33:08
  bill: No.
• 33:08
Evan: He does nothing. And he's like, he's in, he spends the first part of the movie,
• 33:13
Evan: in his penthouse office, making his secretary do work, who then gets murdered
• 33:19
Evan: by one of the gremlins, which is a really funny scene actually,
• 33:22
Evan: when the gremlin puts on her little sweater and is like typing on the keyboard.
• 33:26
Evan: Poor guy. Poor, poor woman. Like, she didn't deserve that. But then he comes
• 33:30
Evan: out and ends up fighting with it and like stuffs it into the paper shredder.
• 33:35
Evan: And it's like the guy doesn't even, he doesn't know how simple things in an
• 33:39
Evan: office work. Plus nothing works because his thing is all bullshit.
• 33:42
Evan: His building is the Hyperloop.
• 33:44
ward: And it goes back to the janitor's point where it's like, what does he actually
• 33:47
ward: do that's worth all of that?
• 33:49
ward: Just paces in his office going, maybe we'll do this.
• 33:53
  bill: Shred memos.
• 33:54
  ward: I'm bored. Yeah.
• 33:55
bill: That's what he has her do, shred memos.
• 33:57
Evan: Yeah, which is probably like evidence of something, like some malfeasance he's done.
• 34:01
bill: And then the next thing he says is that to, he says to her to, uh,
• 34:08
bill: uh, basically, you know, take down, you know, the idea of putting on now that
• 34:13
bill: they've destroyed Chinatown to put on a,
• 34:18
bill: put on a cultural parade with those dragon things, you know,
• 34:23
bill: the guys and the dragons to show the people how much they love what he did.
• 34:29
bill: like literally that's what he says he's like we're gonna put on a parade to
• 34:35
bill: show the people how much they appreciate what i'm doing.
• 34:41
Evan: Do you think he was skewering trump or is it too early.
• 34:43
bill: I think it was a little too early.
• 34:45
Evan: He would just go on after probably the warner brothers ceo yeah i mean i don't know who it was but.
• 34:50
ward: Even then like how much it parallels to the tech billionaires we have currently it's fucking insane.
• 34:56
Evan: Yeah plus he has that little thing he uses to get out of the building he has
• 34:59
Evan: that little pod the elevator thing it just shoots him out.
• 35:02
ward: Yeah i didn't know if we should mention like secret tunnels in new york,
• 35:08
  ward: or not.
• 35:10
Evan: I love that he has that though it just comes out outside and then you know,
• 35:15
Evan: and then of course the uh the um what's his name um flutterman the friend like
• 35:21
Evan: flutterman takes the murray takes the takes it back inside to then try and help them inside.
• 35:27
Evan: And of course, they don't believe anything he's telling them.
• 35:29
Evan: Both Billy and Futterman are both completely like, wait, why do you know about
• 35:34
Evan: these weird creatures? And why should we believe anything you're talking about?
• 35:37
Evan: Which is the perfect aspect of any monster movie, right?
• 35:40
Evan: Some person knows the rules or knows everything, and then they don't take them
• 35:44
Evan: seriously, and things get out of hand.
• 35:45
bill: Futterman's storyline is actually really good, I think, because it very much...
• 35:52
bill: It parallels the disbelief of everybody else,
• 35:59
bill: and the incompetence of all of the higher, you know, like the basically like the oligarchs or,
• 36:07
bill: the managerial class that is shown in the movie from Cushing,
• 36:13
  bill: including Dr. Cushing catheter.
• 36:16
bill: and Futterman is he's a very much you know like working class kind of guy and
• 36:22
bill: he's the guy that you know like he's a proletarian hero and he.
• 36:27
  ward: He's showing that.
• 36:28
  bill: All the positions.
• 36:29
ward: Of supposed authority in the movie are wrong they don't know what the fuck.
• 36:32
  bill: They're talking about.
• 36:34
ward: They said I was crazy no.
• 36:35
bill: I'm not and he conquers his fear like he has a genuine terror of these things
• 36:41
bill: and he very explicitly conquers that fear overcomes all,
• 36:47
bill: the hindrances and challenges before him to rise to the occasion and save the day alongside Billy.
• 36:56
  Evan: Yeah.
• 36:57
ward: Yeah, like he shows up on what's supposed to be a vacation, immediately gets
• 37:02
  ward: re-traumatized by Bat Gremlin.
• 37:06
ward: overcomes that reaffirms his own beliefs and his abilities and says that he's
• 37:12
ward: going to do something about it and then does it's fucking incredible this story is great he's.
• 37:16
Evan: Awesome yeah it's like he's he's like he's yelling at the police in front of
• 37:21
Evan: the building like they don't know what to do they want to just like go in there
• 37:24
Evan: guns blazing and another thing that's also very thing that would same thing
• 37:27
Evan: that would happen today is,
• 37:29
Evan: the tech oligarch in this case clamp he He won't let the press or anyone inside the building.
• 37:34
Evan: He wants to hide it so that no one knows what's happened and they can basically
• 37:38
Evan: just, you know, pretend it never happened or whatever.
• 37:42
Evan: Meanwhile, he, the character Grandpa Fred, played by Robert Prosky,
• 37:47
Evan: like the vampire guy who does some like late night TV show,
• 37:52
Evan: starts a broadcast of what's going on in the building during the whole thing.
• 37:57
Evan: And I think that's all that.
• 37:58
bill: Which, the only reason Clamp allows that to happen is because he can control
• 38:03
bill: it. He owns that material.
• 38:05
Evan: Yes, and then he gives him, he promotes him to like the anchor of the...
• 38:10
Evan: whatever weekly news or something like that and he also,
• 38:14
Evan: promotes at the end he tells billy that he likes his little drawing which is
• 38:19
Evan: a picture of his hometown and his idea then is to build more quaint hometowns
• 38:25
  Evan: quaint like little villages,
• 38:27
Evan: which is also really fucked up and also what these people will do,
• 38:31
Evan: yeah also you know we've who we forgot as cameos dean norris and raymond cruise
• 38:37
Evan: people obviously know who dean norris from breaking bad is hank trader he plays
• 38:41
Evan: one of the swat guys like you don't actually see his face.
• 38:44
bill: You don't even see him.
• 38:45
Evan: No that's he's in it and i think that's funny.
• 38:48
bill: That doesn't count as a cameo.
• 38:51
  Evan: That's before.
• 38:52
bill: Anybody know who that's not a cameo that's his like first role in film wasn't
• 38:59
bill: yeah that's like oh yeah jack black's in fucking demolition.
• 39:02
  Evan: Man this is a.
• 39:04
ward: Like that doesn't really the janitor.
• 39:06
  Evan: Is john.
• 39:06
bill: John aston is the janitor is a cameo that was a man who was like you know incredibly famous.
• 39:16
  Evan: All right fine,
• 39:20
Evan: i just like that he's in this movie for no real apparent reason.
• 39:25
bill: Yeah, because he was nobody at that time.
• 39:29
Evan: No, I just was looking. The year that this came out, which was in 1990,
• 39:33
Evan: he did one, two, three, four, five, six different films, including he was also in Tony Total Recall.
• 39:39
bill: All of them guy in background, no lines.
• 39:45
ward: Guy in scene number three.
• 39:47
bill: Guy number four. That's not a cameo. That's a guy struggling to pay his bills.
• 39:54
Evan: He's like the janitor man he's like fuck man i just wanna yeah i wanna live.
• 39:59
ward: Yeah you think at the time he was like man i i really enjoy the passion that.
• 40:03
  Evan: This project.
• 40:04
ward: Has i'm gonna hop in on it i'll take anything you got boss just put me on the
• 40:09
ward: team coach i'm ready to get in there.
• 40:12
Evan: He's calling vince gilligan for uh he's like hey you got any roles coming up for me,
• 40:17
Evan: not really the same no and i i think what we we've like tried to portray the
• 40:23
Evan: ridiculousness of the gremlins in it but every scene that they're in where they're just causing mischief,
• 40:30
Evan: there's always something really fine i also really like the woman who has a
• 40:33
Evan: cooking show which is just microwaving stuff yeah like her show is microwaving things.
• 40:37
bill: And adding so much she's clearly she's straight up drunk it's microwaving with
• 40:43
bill: marge also i just what I put out.
• 40:47
bill: Nowhere in that thing does she microwave anything. She never microwaves anything.
• 40:54
Evan: She just rolls up something inside of a piece of bologna and puts it on a platter.
• 40:59
ward: And then she's got a huge stock pot.
• 41:02
bill: Huge stock pot. Never microwaves anything. The only thing that is microwaved
• 41:06
bill: in that entire sequence is a gremlin.
• 41:09
bill: Oh, no, I'm sorry. It's a pile of cutlery that a gremlin put in the microwave.
• 41:14
Evan: What's the person? There's some person who's on Food Network who I feel like is very similar.
• 41:19
Evan: she'd it's like it's the one who makes like the hideous um do you know i'm talking
• 41:24
Evan: about though right i do know,
• 41:26
Evan: sandra lee yes sandra lee yeah she
• 41:30
Evan: her whole thing was most of the stuff was packaged which i'm not like that's
• 41:34
Evan: i'm not like mocking someone for using packaged foods it's just the way that
• 41:38
Evan: she presented it was also just hideous and terrible it reminds me of her as
• 41:42
Evan: like on if the future was her
• 41:45
Evan: later on anyway she also was in a relationship with andrew cuomo for anyone out there who wants.
• 41:50
  bill: Sandra Lee?
• 41:51
  Evan: That's a, he's a prepackaged human being.
• 41:54
  bill: So yeah.
• 41:54
ward: She knows what she does, she likes, all right?
• 41:56
bill: She knows what she likes.
• 41:57
  Evan: Yeah.
• 41:59
bill: Like, if there was ever a human being that could be equated to prepackaged,
• 42:04
bill: like, lunch meat, it's Andrew Cuomo. I'm sorry.
• 42:08
  Evan: Yeah.
• 42:08
bill: I'm sorry to prepackaged lunch meat.
• 42:11
ward: I'm not prepackaged. I'm Italian.
• 42:20
Evan: Oh but the the other thing person who's funny in this is the like the head of
• 42:24
Evan: security who's a complete idiot and doesn't do anything except,
• 42:29
Evan: you know spy on people and fire people like over a camera he fires some person
• 42:34
Evan: who takes a like a casual break.
• 42:37
bill: He takes a smoke break.
• 42:38
Evan: Which is he take a smoke break in like a an alley not an alleyway like a tunnel
• 42:44
Evan: or I don't know what to just you know like a stairwell or something and he fires him.
• 42:48
ward: Comrades need their tobacco alright. Well. You should not have been fired for
• 42:51
  ward: that. That's extremely anti-worker.
• 42:53
Evan: Yeah. Oh yeah they're totally anti-worker. The head of security is the same
• 42:57
Evan: guy who says we can only have art on our workstation that's approved art and
• 43:01
Evan: it's like a triangle bullshit modern art thing.
• 43:06
  ward: Oh it's so bad.
• 43:07
Evan: He throws his plant out and he's like.
• 43:10
bill: He goes on to play yeah the doctor in star trek voyager uh emergency medical
• 43:19
bill: hologram doctor who becomes sentient um one of my all-time favorite star trek characters.
• 43:25
Evan: I did not realize he was in that. He was also in Stargate.
• 43:29
bill: Yes, he fires somebody over. And because there is a constant, there is a security.
• 43:36
bill: This really is, it's the, what's that thing?
• 43:43
bill: The all-seeing eye, the prison thing.
• 43:45
  ward: A panopticon.
• 43:46
bill: Thank you. Ward, I knew if I said enough words, you would give me the right word.
• 43:52
ward: I was waiting for you to say enough words.
• 43:56
bill: I was waiting for that. Yeah. It is truly Panopticon.
• 44:00
bill: You know, we're like, there is a woman with a headset on and she's like,
• 44:03
  bill: sir, sir, unauthorized break.
• 44:06
bill: Someone has stepped away and they are smoking a cigarette. And he steps away.
• 44:11
ward: We got one. We got one.
• 44:12
  bill: Yeah.
• 44:14
Evan: Someone is eating an unauthorized sandwich during their lunch hour.
• 44:18
bill: Also, the greatest thing that the security people also provide is the mockery
• 44:23
bill: of the rules of the gremlins.
• 44:26
bill: One of my all-time favorite sequences in the movie.
• 44:28
  Evan: Yes, love that.
• 44:29
bill: So, for those of you who have not listened to the first episode and not heard
• 44:33
bill: the rules for gremlins, or if you've just lived under a rock for,
• 44:35
bill: you know, 40-plus years and you don't know the rules of gremlins,
• 44:40
bill: so you have gizmo who is a mogwai mogwai cannot be gotten wet,
• 44:47
bill: and they cannot be fed after midnight
• 44:51
bill: if they are fed after midnight they become a gremlin if they get wet,
• 44:57
  bill: they sprout.
• 44:59
Evan: No they don't become a gremlin they give birth.
• 45:01
bill: To gremlins no no no if they eat after midnight they become a gremlin oh right
• 45:08
bill: if a mogwai gets wet They sprout weird balls,
• 45:16
  bill: that become mogwai.
• 45:18
  bill: To become more mogwai.
• 45:22
bill: If a mogwai eats after midnight, they become a gremlin. If a gremlin gets wet,
• 45:29
  bill: they make more gremlins.
• 45:32
bill: And that begs the question, when does midnight start? When does after midnight start?
• 45:38
bill: And so there is an entire extended sequence in which the security people are
• 45:43
bill: like, so if a gremlin gets a piece of, if a mogwai gets a piece of food stuck in his teeth.
• 45:50
  ward: That's so good.
• 45:51
bill: And then after midnight, it comes out and he swallows it.
• 45:59
bill: Does he become a gremlin? What if.
• 46:02
ward: Because he technically didn't eat it.
• 46:04
  bill: Right.
• 46:05
  ward: After midnight.
• 46:06
bill: What if he's on a plane and he crosses a time zone while eating?
• 46:14
bill: Wait, what if one of them eats something at 11 o'clock, but then he gets something
• 46:18
bill: stuck in his teeth? Yeah, like a caraway seed or a sesame seed.
• 46:21
bill: Whatever, right, right. And then after 12 o'clock, it comes out.
• 46:24
bill: Now, he didn't eat that after midnight.
• 46:26
bill: That's right. Look, I didn't make the rules, okay? Rules. I don't believe this.
• 46:29
bill: Oh, wait a minute. What about this? What if they're eating in an airplane and
• 46:33
bill: they cross a time zone? I mean, it's always midnight somewhere.
• 46:38
Evan: I almost feel like the original joke in the original movie of that rule is was
• 46:42
Evan: purely just this makes no sense.
• 46:45
  bill: Whatsoever yeah.
• 46:46
  Evan: It's a rule.
• 46:47
bill: Yeah and it was never supposed to make sense it was never supposed to be like
• 46:51
bill: built on and then they were like you have to make another movie and at that point he's like fine,
• 46:58
bill: i'm gonna just not only am i gonna make this making fun of you I'm going to
• 47:02
bill: destroy the very premise of the original movie.
• 47:06
bill: One of my favorite things about this film, though, is that they agreed to all
• 47:12
bill: of this, and then they released it.
• 47:15
bill: And it just goes to show that these people have no dignity.
• 47:21
  bill: They will debase themselves.
• 47:24
bill: They have lost any semblance of dignity or self-respect
• 47:30
bill: or basic humanity, because if they had any of those things, they wouldn't have
• 47:35
bill: allowed this to happen merely in pursuit of money. That's it.
• 47:40
bill: Everything becomes sacrificed at the altar of making a buck.
• 47:45
bill: Sure, you can make a movie in which you relentlessly and mercilessly mock me
• 47:51
bill: and everybody I know, as long as I can make a single dollar.
• 47:57
Evan: I have to add two things that add to this.
• 48:01
Evan: Number one, that this has to be mentioned, at one point, they talk about how
• 48:05
Evan: movies can only be shown on his TV channels in color, and they have a thing
• 48:10
Evan: saying, what's playing tonight? And he says, Casablanca, now in color.
• 48:14
bill: With a happy ending. Don't forget that. With a new happy ending.
• 48:20
Evan: And then the second thing about money is that when, after the end,
• 48:24
Evan: And after when Clamp is giving Billy a promotion raise and he sees Gizmo and
• 48:32
Evan: it's like, oh, it's this mogwai.
• 48:34
Evan: He immediately says like, oh, we should do a Macy's Day parade float.
• 48:40
Evan: Have you thought about merchandising? He's like, no. And then he says like,
• 48:42
Evan: yeah, we'll lose the headband.
• 48:44
Evan: He likes the headband. But the idea that they're merchandising the thing in
• 48:48
Evan: the movie about it, it's also very Spaceballs-esque.
• 48:51
ward: Dude, having the suction cup car window one as the very first example. Yeah.
• 48:57
bill: Which I grew up with. That suction cup gizmo.
• 49:01
bill: Also, he calls it specifically the Macy's Day Parade, which-
• 49:07
bill: I have called the Thanksgiving Macy's, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
• 49:12
bill: I've called it the Macy's Day Parade my entire life.
• 49:15
bill: And I am convinced that this movie is why.
• 49:20
Evan: Wait, but isn't that what it is?
• 49:21
bill: No, it's the Thanksgiving Day Parade. It's the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
• 49:27
bill: It's not the Macy's Day. There's no such thing as Macy's Day, Evan.
• 49:31
ward: Macy's Day. Yeah. There's no day celebrating Macy's.
• 49:35
Evan: Sorry, I thought you were trying to say that it wasn't actually sponsored by Macy's.
• 49:38
bill: No, he calls it the Macy's Day Parade, which is what I have always called it
• 49:44
bill: in my real life because I'm an idiot and because I watched this movie as a child.
• 49:49
bill: And I'm like, yeah, it's the Macy's Day Parade. It's Macy's Day.
• 49:52
Evan: But that's actually kind of perfect because he's just talking about the corporation
• 49:55
Evan: that runs it, which is just like another hilarious joke.
• 49:59
bill: I'm convinced that's why I always called it that.
• 50:02
Evan: Yeah, I was trying to think if there's other moments where, I thought there
• 50:06
Evan: was another part where they mentioned merchandising.
• 50:08
Evan: Oh, but one other thing I want to mention is the name of the genetics lab is Splice-O-Life.
• 50:15
  bill: Splice-O-Life.
• 50:16
Evan: And when they come to deliver the package, which is like, I don't know what
• 50:20
Evan: they say, some kind of chemist, some test tube or whatever.
• 50:23
bill: It's the flu. It's the flu virus.
• 50:26
Evan: Oh, the flu. No, no, I thought they said they don't have the flu.
• 50:28
bill: Oh, yeah, I'm sorry, you're right.
• 50:30
Evan: It's something else. Some other cold or whatever. But the way that they walk
• 50:33
Evan: into it, it feels like you're walking inside of a carnival.
• 50:37
  bill: A hundred percent.
• 50:38
Evan: Like a, yeah, it's very weird. Like a tent.
• 50:42
  bill: There's a camel there.
• 50:43
Evan: This red hole. Yeah. There's a bunch of, actually a bunch of outtakes where
• 50:47
Evan: they try to get the animals to run down the hallway and then they just stand
• 50:50
  Evan: there. Nothing happens.
• 50:52
  bill: Yeah.
• 50:53
ward: Yeah, because they had a camel, didn't they?
• 50:55
  bill: Yeah.
• 50:55
Evan: Camel. A cow. A goat. A goat, maybe?
• 50:58
bill: I know there's a camel and a cow. Oh, dogs. No, there's a couple dogs.
• 51:02
  bill: I don't think there's a goat. There's a couple dogs.
• 51:04
Evan: I think it might be the camel or the cow that just stands there and doesn't
• 51:07
Evan: go. Oh, also the monkeys that they released.
• 51:10
Evan: There's multiple scenes where they're trying to get the monkeys to come out
• 51:13
Evan: of the cage, and they won't do it.
• 51:16
Evan: And they're like calling it. It's like, oh, whatever the monkey's actual name
• 51:19
Evan: is. And yeah, they're doing some fucked up. And then they evict them.
• 51:21
Evan: They're like, you can't be a tenant anymore in our building.
• 51:24
bill: Probably the best decision made by anybody in management at that place. I got to be honest.
• 51:29
Evan: So many hilarious things. Also, the boss, Billy's boss is named Marla Bloodstone.
• 51:36
  Evan: Another great microwave.
• 51:37
ward: Like, every time he tries to, like, talk about, like, the safety of others or
• 51:42
ward: anything, we're like, oh, he's going to be a good person. And he immediately
• 51:45
ward: goes to, like, yeah, you know how many lawsuits it's going to be?
• 51:49
ward: Yep. Like, he immediately brings it back to the dollar.
• 51:51
Evan: Some of the notes I wrote down were also ridiculous. One thing that I thought
• 51:54
Evan: was funny is early on when they are in a taxi cab and no, I think he, no, the,
• 52:01
Evan: Futterman asked about taking taxi cabs and he makes some joke about them being
• 52:05
Evan: Russian and stealing your state secrets.
• 52:07
bill: Yeah, there are multiple references to Russia and Russia.
• 52:13
bill: russian spies in this film it's.
• 52:16
Evan: Truly of its time cold wars yeah 1990 yeah makes sense,
• 52:22
Evan: there's no other funny none of the other names are that funny but it actually
• 52:25
Evan: does say the person's name is microwave marge yep that's my that's the character's
• 52:29
Evan: name yeah microwave marge named microwave which is weird because she would have
• 52:32
Evan: been named microwave before microwave was invented it's kind of no she changed it oh okay legally yeah.
• 52:37
ward: There's there's paperwork for that.
• 52:41
bill: First name microwave last name.
• 52:43
  Evan: Marge,
• 52:46
Evan: the opening thing with the bugs bunny and porky pig and daffy duck and then
• 52:51
Evan: like changing the rules to me that felt like the idea of dante just being like
• 52:55
Evan: i'm gonna do whatever i want i'm gonna,
• 52:57
Evan: get rid of bugs bunny it's gonna be daffy duck doing the intro just sort of
• 53:01
Evan: like a fuck you to warner brothers yeah just literally just making fun of them yeah It felt.
• 53:05
ward: Like a fuck you right off the rip where it was like, cause like I didn't know
• 53:10
ward: all the background, but it was like, oh, this guy got like full creative control.
• 53:13
ward: He can, he can just rip whatever the fuck he wants. Yeah.
• 53:17
  Evan: Yeah. I wonder.
• 53:18
ward: So, cause why else would I be seeing this Looney Tunes intro for gremlins to the.
• 53:25
bill: The, um, all of that was actually removed from the theatrical release because it confused audiences.
• 53:31
Evan: It would be confusing. Honestly, be like, wait, am I in the right?
• 53:35
bill: Yeah. They thought, because they were like, wait, this isn't,
• 53:39
bill: I thought I was here for a live action film. It's not, you know,
• 53:42
bill: they literally, they were like, they were confused. They were like,
• 53:44
bill: okay, we have to pull that.
• 53:45
Evan: I have, this is something strange. So in the, there's a review from this movie
• 53:50
Evan: that came out later. It looks like it's from some guy named Video Hounds.
• 53:55
Evan: golden movie retriever gave it three and a half bones out of four but his quote
• 54:01
Evan: and this came out in 2007 so think about the time you said all those.
• 54:06
ward: Things seven what you said you just said all those things those are.
• 54:10
Evan: Like all those words in.
• 54:13
  ward: That order okay.
• 54:16
Evan: This is real okay i'm just.
• 54:18
  ward: Making shirt because.
• 54:19
Evan: What the fuck he he says that the gremlins is superior than the original
• 54:25
Evan: and then he says it has a myriad of surreal tributes and scores to movies including
• 54:30
Evan: the wizard of oz and a musical extravaganza including a donald trump parody
• 54:35
Evan: take on tv news and body slams modern urban living
• 54:39
Evan: i don't think he quite understood all of it but it's interesting that he also
• 54:42
Evan: got a trump parody granted that he wrote this in 2007 but still where's the trump.
• 54:47
  bill: Parody I don't.
• 54:48
Evan: See it. That, I don't know. I don't, um...
• 54:52
ward: I didn't see it either.
• 54:53
Evan: A bunch of people did like this movie. Critics did like it. And it got a pretty good rating.
• 54:58
Evan: It just did not do well in the box office. Maybe you're right,
• 55:00
Evan: though. Maybe he was right that it waited too long for a sequel. People got bored.
• 55:05
  ward: It's good for him.
• 55:07
bill: I honestly, like, yeah, it was too late to capitalize on Gremlin.
• 55:12
bill: But I think it was also too...
• 55:14
bill: It was far ahead of its time in terms of what it was saying and how it was saying it.
• 55:19
bill: Like, I know we, you know, we've talked about, you know, RoboCop and I know
• 55:22
bill: RoboCop and, you know, Verhoeven in general, and we've talked about,
• 55:26
bill: you know, like his, you know, political satire recently.
• 55:30
bill: And listen, I think RoboCop is a brilliant piece of political satire and a brilliant
• 55:35
bill: piece of dystopian media that has satirized the modern experience.
• 55:45
bill: But I think Gremlins 2 is a far more impactful and depressingly correct prediction
• 55:58
bill: for the world we will live in.
• 56:00
bill: Like, we would be so lucky to live in RoboCop, okay?
• 56:06
bill: But we live in Gremlins 2 world. That's the fucking future we got.
• 56:11
bill: We got the future of Gremlins 2.
• 56:13
  Evan: We got both.
• 56:14
bill: I don't know. We never, no, we didn't. I'm sorry. In what way did we get both?
• 56:21
Evan: We have a violent police state, like in RoboCop? With a militarized corporate police force?
• 56:27
bill: I think that Gremlins 2 has a violent police state as well.
• 56:30
ward: Yeah, but we ain't got like people in them armored things. They're just going
• 56:33
ward: to be sending robot dogs with IEDs attached at people like they've already done.
• 56:37
bill: Yeah, it's not, in no way, we never got to the point where they're like,
• 56:41
bill: you know what, we can actually keep people alive. and like you know things no,
• 56:46
bill: we got the dumb future the dumb dystopia the fucking stupid dystopia.
• 56:52
  ward: We got flat cameras.
• 56:54
  bill: What's what's.
• 56:54
Evan: Funny to me is that the you just you just said that we wish we had gotten the robocop which is also.
• 57:03
bill: A comparison to this i just went in comparison to this not like you know okay,
• 57:10
bill: if we had the options if these are the options okay if these are the two options,
• 57:15
bill: we'd be so fucking lucky to have robocop future but no we got this shit the fucking dumb shit.
• 57:24
ward: Yeah people at least take things serious in.
• 57:26
  bill: Robocop yeah yeah.
• 57:29
Evan: Yeah but the bad guy in robocop is way.
• 57:31
bill: Like i feel like okay so like here that that is what i think actually that is
• 57:36
bill: that and like i think ward is
• 57:38
bill: right because the robocop future posits a future in which the population,
• 57:45
bill: is still aware and angry about shit,
• 57:50
bill: and like will push back the,
• 57:55
bill: the future of gremlins 2 is one of complete complacency and docile
• 58:01
bill: cattle like public who just fucking goes to clamp industries and gorges on frozen
• 58:08
bill: yogurt yeah that's what we got.
• 58:11
ward: I mean and that's what and that
• 58:12
ward: is what we got we know about the fucking murderous pedophiles in power,
• 58:19
ward: Ramping corruption, ice, more fucking illegal wars and war crimes.
• 58:25
ward: And people are just fucking doing whatever, dog.
• 58:28
Evan: There's lots of behind-the-scenes casual race that is now no longer...
• 58:32
bill: Like, there's something inherently... There is something inherently hopeful
• 58:37
bill: about Verhoeven's dystopias that I don't see in Dante's version.
• 58:44
bill: Dante's version is far more cynical. and sadly more accurate.
• 58:51
ward: Because i mean also how many times you hear about people where it's like oh
• 58:55
ward: with ai it's going to be like terminator and it's like in the same vein at least
• 59:00
ward: they take that shit serious there's no one in the fucking terminator universe going,
• 59:05
ward: you know actually i think skynet's the good guys and you just need to hear them
• 59:08
ward: out yeah actually i heard a podcast,
• 59:12
ward: Joe Rogan had Skynet on early on. All right.
• 59:17
bill: You know, I'm like now it's like, you know, if you criticize Skynet, it's ableist.
• 59:21
bill: That's ableist. People use disabled people use Skynet to commit crimes,
• 59:27
bill: you know, and it's ableist. You can't, you can't criticize it. No.
• 59:31
Evan: I think the way we settle this is we have Paul Verhoeven on the show and ask him about Gremlins too.
• 59:38
bill: No, we have to have both of them on Dante and Verhoeven. debate.
• 59:42
  ward: Yeah.
• 59:43
Evan: I've actually tried to get an email address to send an email to someone related
• 59:47
Evan: to Paul Verhoeven. I haven't found anything to even send an email.
• 59:51
Evan: He's too famous. And he's also probably doesn't check his email.
• 59:55
Evan: I'm sure there's no way that guy's got email.
• 59:57
  bill: He's 88 years old.
• 59:58
Evan: Yeah. He's an old guy.
• 1:00:01
ward: Have you tried looking him up in the phone book?
• 1:00:05
Evan: You know, if I still had a phone book, I would.
• 1:00:10
bill: He's 88. And Dante is 79, you know.
• 1:00:13
ward: Have you tried knocking on doors?
• 1:00:16
  bill: Yeah.
• 1:00:18
Evan: I'm sure he doesn't live in the U.S. anymore. He's probably...
• 1:00:21
  bill: No, I don't...
• 1:00:22
Evan: Paul Verhoeven, if you're listening. Dante?
• 1:00:24
  bill: Verho...
• 1:00:25
  Evan: Joe Dante?
• 1:00:27
bill: Yeah, I believe... No. No, I'm sorry. Verhoeven lives in the United States.
• 1:00:32
bill: He returned to the U.S. in 2022. He saw what was going on, and he was like,
• 1:00:36
bill: this is ripe for my particular type of storytelling.
• 1:00:42
Evan: So there was a... About two years ago, there was a rumor he was going to be making a new movie.
• 1:00:47
Evan: and i don't know that it's going to actually happen i'm guessing not i think that he couldn't.
• 1:00:51
bill: Get he is currently preparing he's currently preparing his next film young sinner
• 1:00:55
bill: which reunites him with robocop screenwriter uh ever newmeyer uh it is an erotic
• 1:01:01
bill: political thriller set in washington dc.
• 1:01:04
Evan: But it's been stuck in development hell for.
• 1:01:06
bill: Multiple he began shooting in 2024.
• 1:01:10
Evan: No way. They actually started shooting it? I saw that, and then I saw that that
• 1:01:15
Evan: wasn't true. I hope that you're right.
• 1:01:17
bill: Listen, I'm just reading what the internet tells me. And as we know, the internet can't lie.
• 1:01:24
  ward: The internet's never wrong.
• 1:01:26
bill: I'm just reading the AI something. No, I'm not. I'm not reading the AI something.
• 1:01:30
Evan: In 2025, he said there was no guarantee it will happen.
• 1:01:34
bill: Yeah, because he's 88. He could die.
• 1:01:37
  Evan: Well.
• 1:01:38
bill: I got to be honest. I think it's when I'm 88 everything I do will be like there's
• 1:01:43
bill: no guarantee this is gonna happen,
• 1:01:46
bill: see I'm gonna be the opposite because I think it'll be so fucking funny.
• 1:01:50
ward: Be like I promise I'll get.
• 1:01:51
  bill: To it.
• 1:01:54
ward: I'm just gonna have all these unknown.
• 1:01:55
bill: Promises when I'm 88 when I pass away nothing will be promised fucker.
• 1:02:00
ward: Said he's gonna fix this.
• 1:02:01
bill: For me nothing will be promised when I hit that point.
• 1:02:05
Evan: We should do another one of his movies I know we've done all his like what i
• 1:02:08
Evan: call the core trilogy but plus showgirls i think there's another one worth anyway,
• 1:02:14
Evan: anything about gremlins 2 since we're at the point where we talk about other directors.
• 1:02:19
bill: Unrecognized brilliance uh a movie so far ahead of its time as to be basically
• 1:02:26
bill: made by somebody from the future.
• 1:02:29
Evan: I hadn't watched it in a long time and i've watched it twice.
• 1:02:33
ward: Yeah no this is such a fun time.
• 1:02:35
Evan: And uh we will return for the third movie in october of 2028 presuming that it comes out though.
• 1:02:41
  bill: I don't think it's happening there's no guarantee i don't think it's happening.
• 1:02:44
Evan: As paul romero would say.
• 1:02:46
bill: Listen joe dante is currently 79 he doesn't have to guarantee anything anymore okay he's.
• 1:02:50
Evan: Not involved but he's not involved it's being directed by chris.
• 1:02:53
bill: Columbus i just want to point out joe dante new jersey born and bred.
• 1:02:57
  Evan: Yeah morristown i.
• 1:02:57
  bill: Believe.
• 1:03:00
Evan: So go knock on his door.
• 1:03:01
bill: He doesn't live there. He doesn't live in Morristown anymore.
• 1:03:05
Evan: How do you know? If you stop by his child at home and- Yes.
• 1:03:10
ward: Bill knocks on doors, all right?
• 1:03:12
bill: Yeah, that's part of my job. I knock on doors. That's what I do.
• 1:03:15
ward: And he looks people up in the phone book.
• 1:03:18
Evan: For anyone out there who is under the age of, I don't know, what, 30?
• 1:03:22
Evan: A phone book used to be a book with everyone's phone number in it.
• 1:03:25
Evan: And they had a yellow one for the businesses and a white one for the people.
• 1:03:29
bill: It is amazing. Joe Tante has an entire section of his Wikipedia page just termed
• 1:03:34
bill: unrealized projects, and it is large.
• 1:03:40
  Evan: That's kind of bad.
• 1:03:41
  bill: There's a lot.
• 1:03:43
bill: It is broken up by Dectate Decades, and it's a lot of stuff.
• 1:03:48
Evan: I mean, some of this could have been like, oh, I had an idea that I said at
• 1:03:51
Evan: one interview one time. It doesn't necessarily mean it got beyond that, but that's a shame.
• 1:03:56
ward: How many of them are jokes that you're like, oh, somebody took me serious on that?
• 1:03:59
Evan: Whatever. Some of them are actually hilarious because there's no real context
• 1:04:04
Evan: about them, although I guess there's some sources you can look into.
• 1:04:07
Evan: one of them is called ombra amore retitled from monster love a horror comedy
• 1:04:12
Evan: written by greg peck about a werewolf and a vampire who fall in love who would not pay to see that.
• 1:04:18
bill: I think i think ward's right and some of these are just random jokes this man
• 1:04:22
bill: has said and they're like yeah we'll do that he's like yeah i'm gonna do that,
• 1:04:28
bill: i'll get right on it i'll get i'll get on that fucking idiots he takes meetings in hollywood.
• 1:04:33
Evan: Just to get like a meal and then.
• 1:04:35
bill: He pitches a ridiculous movie and then they never call him fucking idiots oh.
• 1:04:39
ward: Hell yeah he he hears about some fucking new restaurant he's like.
• 1:04:42
bill: Oh keep that in mind yeah yeah oh wait yeah somebody wants.
• 1:04:46
ward: To meet with me yeah yeah have them meet me here for dinner.
• 1:04:49

• 1:04:56
bill: casting the runes yeah sure sure simon penn Yeah.
• 1:05:05
ward: No, I think I actually got a working idea. Hey, can we get another bottle of
• 1:05:09
ward: wine, get the creative juices flowing?
• 1:05:13
Evan: He said in the 90s, he said he wanted to do a live adaptation of the cartoon series The Jetsons.
• 1:05:18
bill: Yeah, obviously. There's no way in hell.
• 1:05:21
  ward: Yeah.
• 1:05:23
bill: There's no way in hell that wasn't just a dinner.
• 1:05:26
Evan: And he claimed the person who was going to write the movie was the person who wrote Problem Child.
• 1:05:30
bill: He also, in 1990s, a contemporary set film adaptation,
• 1:05:35
bill: of Jack London's novel starring Tom Hanks or Steve Guttenberg in the 1990s? No, I'm sorry.
• 1:05:44
bill: That was a meal ticket.
• 1:05:45
bill: He was just like, yeah, yeah, Steve Guttenberg. Yeah, 1990s.
• 1:05:49
ward: You got Evan over here. Oh, that's so sad. All these unrealized projects.
• 1:05:52
ward: Meanwhile, I'm over here. Good for him.
• 1:05:54
bill: Steve Guttenberg. At the height of his popularity in 1996.
• 1:06:00
Evan: Why does it say in the 90s under his unrealized project? It just says Jurassic
• 1:06:04
Evan: Park. Were they going to hire Joe Dante to do this?
• 1:06:07
  bill: Great question.
• 1:06:10
ward: The more accurate question I feel that needs to be asked first is how many bottles
• 1:06:15
ward: of wine before that idea was pitched?
• 1:06:18
Evan: Oh, it's just an archive of an interview where he says what he would have done
• 1:06:22
Evan: if he had directed Jurassic Park. That's it.
• 1:06:25
  bill: That's amazing.
• 1:06:28
Evan: This guy is just, didn't he say he's just a prankster? This guy is just playing
• 1:06:31
Evan: practical jokes all over the place.
• 1:06:34
ward: Why not did you see the movie we just discussed yeah did you watch this did
• 1:06:41
ward: you i know it was my first time but evan did you watch this.
• 1:06:45
  bill: The batman this.
• 1:06:46
Evan: Dude just is clowning on.
• 1:06:48
bill: That man starring john lithgow as the joker.
• 1:06:53
ward: Oh my god he had so many good dinners let's have a movie with uh.
• 1:06:57
Evan: With uh i don't know.
• 1:06:58
bill: Jaws three people zero in early attempt of.
• 1:07:02
ward: Another Jaws sequel pitched as a spoof.
• 1:07:05
Evan: We're going to have a movie about a giant, super tall monster played by...
• 1:07:12
bill: Danny, do you know? Yeah, so, yeah. This is a brilliant piece of film.
• 1:07:17
bill: Masked behind the maniacal laughter, mere constant maniacal laughter of gremlins.
• 1:07:24
bill: Mere constant. It never stops.
• 1:07:27
ward: Yeah. It really doesn't stop.
• 1:07:29
  bill: It never stops.
• 1:07:30
Evan: We didn't even say, most of them are puppets, and they all look really good.
• 1:07:35
Evan: There's only a few parts where it looks a little bit off, but otherwise, incredible.
• 1:07:40
bill: The only time it looks off is when the bat gremlin is flying over them outside.
• 1:07:47
  bill: And only certain scenes.
• 1:07:48
ward: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Only very certain.
• 1:07:53
Evan: There's another scene where one of them is dancing above the table or something,
• 1:07:55
Evan: and it looks a little bit weird because of the way they did it.
• 1:07:57
bill: It looks amazing. I love it. I will not criticize that scene.
• 1:08:01
  ward: It was perfect.
• 1:08:02
  bill: It was perfect.
• 1:08:03
ward: It was perfect. Don't you dare talk about my baby like that.
• 1:08:07
  Evan: But everything else.
• 1:08:08
bill: Oh, and we forgot to mention that one gremlin does live. It is Gremlina,
• 1:08:15
bill: and she is in the process of,
• 1:08:17
bill: Of what appears to be, she's in the process of walking down the aisle to marry the head of security.
• 1:08:26
bill: And in the end, he's into it.
• 1:08:29
bill: He's definitely on board with it in the end.
• 1:08:32
ward: Yeah, it might start untoward, but she successfully seduces him.
• 1:08:38
Evan: Can gremlins procreate the natural way?
• 1:08:41
bill: No, they cannot. They don't have genitals. They're naked. did you notice any
• 1:08:46
bill: genitals or even like a cloaca no they don't have genitals.
• 1:08:51
Evan: So he just like which you think they would definitely.
• 1:08:53
ward: Have like a way to defecate just due to the nature of being a gremlin.
• 1:08:58
  Evan: Yeah because i mean.
• 1:08:59
ward: If they get to that no just the mayhem aspect.
• 1:09:04
bill: Yeah i think they just throw.
• 1:09:05
  Evan: You think they'd.
• 1:09:05
  bill: Be a little shit.
• 1:09:07
  Evan: Yeah maybe they.
• 1:09:07
bill: Just throw up they should have they should have discussed this in.
• 1:09:10
  Evan: The movie yeah,
• 1:09:13
Evan: it's an it's an outtake yeah like how do gremlins take a shit.
• 1:09:16
bill: This will be a patriot episode.
• 1:09:17
Evan: Well i think we've reached the uh we've reached the peak of uh the gremlins
• 1:09:21
Evan: lore here but uh myself bill ward we will smell you later.
• 1:09:27
  bill: I'm not saying.
