- 1:00:00Hey everybody, welcome
- 1:00:00back to another episode.
- 1:00:02I'm Andrew Lewin, as you know,
- 1:00:03and today's episode is not
- 1:00:05just special, it's a milestone.
- 1:00:07I'm joined by two incredible change
- 1:00:09makers of the ocean,
- 1:00:10Amanda Horn and Serena Wynn.
- 1:00:12And together we're announcing something
- 1:00:14we've been working on behind the scene
- 1:00:15for quite some time.
- 1:00:16It's called The Undertow.
- 1:00:18It's a platform and
- 1:00:19community built to support the people
- 1:00:21who are driving ocean
- 1:00:22conservation forward.
- 1:00:23And the initiative is
- 1:00:24about more than just awareness,
- 1:00:26it's about action, it's about connection,
- 1:00:28and it's about impact.
- 1:00:30And if you've ever felt like you wanted
- 1:00:31to do more for the ocean,
- 1:00:33but didn't really know how to do it,
- 1:00:35or if you're already taking action and
- 1:00:37want to be part of something bigger,
- 1:00:39like a bigger wave,
- 1:00:40this episode is for you.
- 1:00:42So stick around as we share the story
- 1:00:44behind The Undertow,
- 1:00:45why it matters and how you can be a part
- 1:00:47of it on this episode of the How to
- 1:00:49Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:00:51Let's start the show.
- 1:00:55Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 1:00:56exciting episode of the
- 1:00:57How to Protect the Ocean
- 1:00:58podcast. I'm your host, Andrew Lewin.
- 1:00:59This is the podcast where you find out
- 1:01:00what's happening with the ocean,
- 1:01:02how you can speak up for the ocean, what
- 1:01:03you can do to live for a
- 1:01:04better ocean by taking action.
- 1:01:06On today's episode, we're going to be
- 1:01:07talking about The Undertow,
- 1:01:09something that I've been working on with
- 1:01:10Serena Amanda for quite
- 1:01:12some time behind the scenes.
- 1:01:13It's something that we
- 1:01:14wanted to present to you today.
- 1:01:15We are launching something because we
- 1:01:17feel like there are two major needs in
- 1:01:20the ocean conservation community.
- 1:01:21One, there are a lot of people who are
- 1:01:22doing projects on their own.
- 1:01:24They are trying to find their own path.
- 1:01:26They're trying to kind of just sort of
- 1:01:28march down their own lane
- 1:01:29and really take down barriers,
- 1:01:32break ceilings and so forth.
- 1:01:33But they're doing it by themselves.
- 1:01:35And we think that as a community, we can
- 1:01:37help uplift and support those people as
- 1:01:39well as get their message
- 1:01:41out there on a bigger scale.
- 1:01:42And that's what we want to do.
- 1:01:43The other thing that we find is that
- 1:01:45there are communities out there, but
- 1:01:46there's not a lot of communities out
- 1:01:47there that are trying
- 1:01:48to put action together.
- 1:01:50Having both of those pieces, the people
- 1:01:52who are trying to do some great things
- 1:01:54and having a community that
- 1:01:55needs those things to be done,
- 1:01:56to be able to guide them to and be able
- 1:01:57to be like, hey, what's greenwashing?
- 1:01:59What's blue washing?
- 1:02:00You know, what can we
- 1:02:00actually buy this good?
- 1:02:02How can we connect to the ocean more?
- 1:02:03What we could do for our corporations,
- 1:02:05like our businesses, to get to a better
- 1:02:07level in terms of acting better for
- 1:02:09climate change and
- 1:02:10the ocean and so forth.
- 1:02:11This is all part of the undertow.
- 1:02:13And this is what we're going to be
- 1:02:14talking about today and why we decided
- 1:02:17that this was the best way forward for
- 1:02:19ocean conservation and filling a need
- 1:02:21that if you fit within
- 1:02:23either of those groups,
- 1:02:24we can do together and collaborate
- 1:02:26collaboration is the key in this.
- 1:02:29It is part of our vision.
- 1:02:30It is part of our mission.
- 1:02:32And it's something that I feel is going
- 1:02:34to go a long way in this ocean
- 1:02:36conservation community.
- 1:02:37So we are going to be
- 1:02:38talking about that today.
- 1:02:39So I have Amanda and
- 1:02:40Serena on the podcast.
- 1:02:42I'm the host, but I'm also going back and
- 1:02:44forth and talking about the ideas that
- 1:02:46we've come up with and what we want to
- 1:02:47establish as the startup.
- 1:02:49And I can't wait Serena and Amanda were
- 1:02:51the ones who approached me
- 1:02:52to be a co-founder on this.
- 1:02:54I'm providing the science and providing
- 1:02:55the podcast and communication.
- 1:02:57So now you're going to see how to protect
- 1:02:59the ocean powered by the undertow, which
- 1:03:02I'm very excited to do.
- 1:03:04And I can't wait to
- 1:03:05do that in the future.
- 1:03:07It's going to be a lot
- 1:03:07of fun in the near future.
- 1:03:09And we're going to be
- 1:03:09launching this very, very soon.
- 1:03:11So here is the interview with myself,
- 1:03:13Amanda and Serena in joy.
- 1:03:14And I'll talk to you after.
- 1:03:16Hey, Amanda.
- 1:03:16Hey, Serena.
- 1:03:17Welcome to the how to
- 1:03:18protect the ocean podcast.
- 1:03:20Are you ready to talk about the undertow?
- 1:03:23Yes, we are.
- 1:03:24Yes.
- 1:03:25Nice.
- 1:03:25This is a very special and exciting
- 1:03:29episode for me as well as for both of
- 1:03:32you, because we're announcing something
- 1:03:34that we've been working
- 1:03:35on for quite some time.
- 1:03:37It's called the undertow.
- 1:03:38We're going to get into what it all means
- 1:03:40and how it's going to hopefully affect
- 1:03:43you all that are listening to this and
- 1:03:45watching this in a very positive way.
- 1:03:48I'm very honored to have both of you on
- 1:03:50the podcast today because like we said,
- 1:03:52we've been working together
- 1:03:53for quite some time on this.
- 1:03:55Both of you have been working together
- 1:03:56even longer than I have with you, with
- 1:03:57you, with all of us.
- 1:03:59And so I am excited to talk about what
- 1:04:02we're going to be talking about today.
- 1:04:03And it's really a way to impact in a
- 1:04:07positive way for the ocean, but also
- 1:04:09bring people together, get them to do
- 1:04:11actions, bring them
- 1:04:12together as connections.
- 1:04:13And I can't wait.
- 1:04:14So before we get into all of that
- 1:04:16wonderful stuff, why don't we just get to
- 1:04:18know a little bit about the both of you?
- 1:04:20So Amanda, we'll start with you.
- 1:04:21Why don't you let us know
- 1:04:22who you are and what you do?
- 1:04:25Absolutely.
- 1:04:25I'm so excited to be back on the podcast.
- 1:04:29It's just it feels very full circle
- 1:04:31because at the time when we had our first
- 1:04:34conversation a couple of years ago, I had
- 1:04:36just made this pivot into the ocean.
- 1:04:38I had no idea really where
- 1:04:39I fit in it as a marketer.
- 1:04:42I knew that I love building brands.
- 1:04:44I was really going down that route.
- 1:04:47But what I realized now is I was looking
- 1:04:48for a an action pathway, like of how I
- 1:04:51could take action for the ocean, like my
- 1:04:54personal passion and excitement for it
- 1:04:56and bring that into my work.
- 1:04:58So I'm super excited to
- 1:04:59have this conversation today.
- 1:05:00And it's just such a great story of how
- 1:05:02we met as Landlauf Burlington people and
- 1:05:05then the story of how
- 1:05:06Srita and I came together.
- 1:05:07So we're just going to talk about this
- 1:05:08little convergence of us as co-founders.
- 1:05:11So I guess to start, I'll say that my
- 1:05:13name is Amanda Horn.
- 1:05:15I am a co-founder, one of the three
- 1:05:16co-founders of the Undertow.
- 1:05:19And I just saw all of my connections to
- 1:05:22water are really what have brought me
- 1:05:23here and just really want to inspire
- 1:05:24others to take action for it.
- 1:05:26So scuba diver, free
- 1:05:27diver, love eating seafood.
- 1:05:30I'm pretty into like water
- 1:05:32and the water wellness space.
- 1:05:33That's something that really changed my
- 1:05:35life, like through cold plunging.
- 1:05:36And these days, every experience that
- 1:05:38I've had that has been positive is
- 1:05:40usually always tied back
- 1:05:41to water lakes included.
- 1:05:44So we can't forget our
- 1:05:45fresh bodies of water.
- 1:05:46I grew up around
- 1:05:47skeleton lake with my family.
- 1:05:49So lots of amazing
- 1:05:50memories up there at the cottage.
- 1:05:51And now that I have a nice, it's just
- 1:05:53really exciting to see, like, through the
- 1:05:55generations, how water is just such a
- 1:05:57thread throughout my personal and
- 1:05:59professional identities.
- 1:06:00That's me.
- 1:06:01Love it. Love it.
- 1:06:02Serena, how about yourself?
- 1:06:03Why don't you let us know
- 1:06:04who you are and what you do?
- 1:06:06I'm so excited to be on today.
- 1:06:09It's kind of full circle for me, too,
- 1:06:10because when I started my water journey,
- 1:06:12your podcast, How to Protect the Ocean,
- 1:06:14was one of the first that I started
- 1:06:16listening to to build my knowledge and
- 1:06:18deepen my understanding of how all of the
- 1:06:21things are connected.
- 1:06:23So I am also a water lover, but my water
- 1:06:28awakening started a little bit later.
- 1:06:30I am now a certified diver.
- 1:06:33I did first start with
- 1:06:35free diving, snorkeling.
- 1:06:36I was your typical beach lover and Amanda
- 1:06:40to your point, cottage lake lover.
- 1:06:44And over time, I really started to think
- 1:06:46about how I could spend the hours that I
- 1:06:49was doing in all of my other careers to
- 1:06:53focus on something that was really
- 1:06:55important to me and make sure that I was
- 1:06:57protecting and sustaining something that
- 1:06:58hopefully I could share
- 1:06:59with my future family.
- 1:07:00And so my water awakening started through
- 1:07:03all of those activities and just got
- 1:07:06strengthened, strengthened with each new
- 1:07:10experience, each coming back to water
- 1:07:14being around water, each
- 1:07:16gap away from it as well.
- 1:07:18I don't know about you all, but I know an
- 1:07:20extended period of time away from water.
- 1:07:22Eventually, I get that, you know, that
- 1:07:24urge and need and meditative state to to
- 1:07:27see and be around water.
- 1:07:29So I'm very excited to share how all of
- 1:07:32that has kind of transpired to me being
- 1:07:34one of the co-founders
- 1:07:35of the Undertow as well.
- 1:07:37I love it. I love it. I'm going to I'm
- 1:07:39going to do something that I
- 1:07:40haven't done in a long time.
- 1:07:42And that's sort of
- 1:07:42reintroduced myself to the audience.
- 1:07:46Whether you're new to this, this podcast
- 1:07:50and listening or watching or not, it
- 1:07:53doesn't matter because this I feel like
- 1:07:55this is like a new beginning, not only
- 1:07:57for myself, but also for an end.
- 1:07:58for all three of us together, but also
- 1:08:01for the podcast because the podcast is
- 1:08:03going to play a pretty
- 1:08:04big role in the Undertow.
- 1:08:06And I'm super excited for that.
- 1:08:08But my water journey began when I was a
- 1:08:10kid and it was it started off watching TV
- 1:08:12and watching the Jacques Cousteau's of of
- 1:08:15my day and and all the different
- 1:08:17discovery channel and not geo and even
- 1:08:19the magazines and going to the library
- 1:08:21and looking up books.
- 1:08:23And the only books that were available
- 1:08:25were these picture books like these
- 1:08:26beautiful photography
- 1:08:27books like collections.
- 1:08:29And that was where it really started. I'm
- 1:08:31like, I need a kid from Scarborough, like
- 1:08:34Toronto being like I'm surrounded by
- 1:08:36pavement and I like I have the Toronto
- 1:08:39Zoo, which is the
- 1:08:40closest thing to me to animals.
- 1:08:42But I want the ocean. I need to be by the
- 1:08:44ocean. And like I think the first time I
- 1:08:47touched the ocean when I was nine years
- 1:08:49old in Florida, we went to we went to
- 1:08:51Florida for a family trip.
- 1:08:52And since then, I've been absolutely in
- 1:08:54love just exploring trying to be in the
- 1:08:56water as much as as much as possible and
- 1:08:58then becoming a scientist and a marine
- 1:08:59biologist to do that.
- 1:09:01And then eventually over time, evolving
- 1:09:04into a science communicator to be like,
- 1:09:05look, we need to talk about the ocean.
- 1:09:08And if I don't start talking about it and
- 1:09:10explaining what's happening to the people
- 1:09:13around me and the people on this platform
- 1:09:15that I've built is is is going to be a waste of time for me.
- 1:09:18And I need to start doing that. And so it
- 1:09:20became like my way to not only stay
- 1:09:23connected to the ocean and what was
- 1:09:24happening, but also to educate and make
- 1:09:27people aware of what was
- 1:09:28happening in the ocean.
- 1:09:30And that's sort of where, you know, we
- 1:09:32came in and and I'm going to just start
- 1:09:34off a little bit in terms of like how the
- 1:09:37undertow really came to be because we all
- 1:09:41have very different backgrounds, like
- 1:09:43professional background.
- 1:09:44You know, always we all grew up in
- 1:09:46Ontario and we, you know, we all have
- 1:09:49that that connection, right? And the
- 1:09:51Canadian connection and so forth.
- 1:09:53But we very we we we did we can't we
- 1:09:55converged but from very different
- 1:09:57backgrounds, which I think is a benefit
- 1:09:58to what the undertow is
- 1:10:00becoming and has become.
- 1:10:02And, you know, coming from a science
- 1:10:05background, coming from a science
- 1:10:06communication background, the frustration
- 1:10:07that I keep seeing about talking about
- 1:10:10things that happen in the ocean and then
- 1:10:12not being able to see action from it or
- 1:10:15being like not having not feeling like I
- 1:10:17have control over the action.
- 1:10:20And I think that, you know, that going
- 1:10:20back and forth of like, look, the major
- 1:10:22action is coming from policy and
- 1:10:24government that, let's be honest, a lot
- 1:10:26of us don't have a huge influence as an
- 1:10:29individual, you know, but there are
- 1:10:31certain things that we can do as an
- 1:10:32individual, which can
- 1:10:34help, but not as an individual.
- 1:10:36You still need to have people in a
- 1:10:39community to do this as a community and
- 1:10:41you'll have more impact that way. And
- 1:10:43that works with government, like
- 1:10:44influencing government as
- 1:10:46well as doing individual actions.
- 1:10:48And that was the frustrating part is not
- 1:10:50finding that place and kind of feeling
- 1:10:52like I'm on this island, seeing other
- 1:10:55people do some really cool things and
- 1:10:57then not being able to be a part of it,
- 1:10:59you know, kind of like, quote unquote,
- 1:11:01stuck in Ontario around these beautiful
- 1:11:03Great Lakes that we have.
- 1:11:04But then, you know, nothing, nothing
- 1:11:06coming out of it. So it was very
- 1:11:06frustrating. And then I met the both of
- 1:11:09you, you know, and and that's where sort
- 1:11:12of we kind of came together and be like,
- 1:11:14okay, let's like, let's get
- 1:11:16together and do something.
- 1:11:17But the idea wasn't mine originally. It
- 1:11:20was, let's talk about it. Who do we who
- 1:11:23do we start with first? Because Amanda,
- 1:11:24you're the one who introduced me to
- 1:11:26Serena. So why don't you go ahead first
- 1:11:29and just sort of talk about how your
- 1:11:31journey led to to the undertow.
- 1:11:34Yeah, sure. So, I guess it goes back to
- 1:11:38when I started it was post pandemic and I
- 1:11:41was just trying to really listen to like,
- 1:11:43what should I be doing next I my
- 1:11:45background is in marketing.
- 1:11:48I know that that's something I love. I
- 1:11:50love being creative. I love building
- 1:11:51brands. So and now when I think of
- 1:11:53marketing, like it's so much more of
- 1:11:54like, less about content, but it's all
- 1:11:56about like the operations and building
- 1:11:58these systems and where do you create
- 1:12:00these online spaces that have a really
- 1:12:05good experience associated with them.
- 1:12:07So I got really into that whole like
- 1:12:09customer design experience design user
- 1:12:11experience design and really looked at
- 1:12:14how to weave that to like create those
- 1:12:17really engaging digital spaces and like
- 1:12:21media has such a huge role in that, which
- 1:12:24was the thing that I
- 1:12:25always really, really loved.
- 1:12:26So you're trying to build a brand, which
- 1:12:28means you're giving an identity to an
- 1:12:31organization or whatever that mission
- 1:12:34that vision and those were starting to
- 1:12:35come in really clearly for me. I had no
- 1:12:37idea what it is that I wanted to build. I
- 1:12:39just knew that I wanted to start a
- 1:12:40conversation around ocean conservation.
- 1:12:42I wanted to do it in a credible way in a
- 1:12:46cheeky and playful way that was going to
- 1:12:48kind of counteract all this doom and
- 1:12:50gloom and things that I was seeing. So
- 1:12:52that's where I ended up started going
- 1:12:54down the path of maybe I want to create
- 1:12:56this waterless personal care brand to
- 1:12:59help start to move people through the
- 1:13:02world in a more conscious way.
- 1:13:03Like as somebody who loves to travel, but
- 1:13:05then I was starting to really understand
- 1:13:07the impact and the footprint that we
- 1:13:09leave when we don't want to ever stop
- 1:13:13discovering places and
- 1:13:14spending time near the ocean.
- 1:13:17So I was really starting to think about
- 1:13:18how do we measure this? How do we reduce
- 1:13:20the impact of our everyday actions on the
- 1:13:23ocean and the world's bodies of water, no
- 1:13:25matter where in the world we are.
- 1:13:26So I started building that and I had no
- 1:13:29idea where to start and I wanted to be
- 1:13:30credible about it. And I knew that I
- 1:13:32needed to start talking to scientists and
- 1:13:34sustainability experts and all these
- 1:13:35people. I had no network in this space.
- 1:13:38My network was strictly wine.
- 1:13:39Like it was all sommeliers, wine
- 1:13:41marketers, governments and people from
- 1:13:44the different liquor boards across Canada
- 1:13:46and a great network of international
- 1:13:48wine, wineries and distilleries.
- 1:13:50And I definitely still tap into today,
- 1:13:53but I was like, I'm building this from
- 1:13:54scratch. I just want to have coffee
- 1:13:56chats. I just need to have conversations
- 1:13:57with people to understand what it is that
- 1:14:00they do and may or may not need to pick
- 1:14:02their brain on something.
- 1:14:03So I started having these really
- 1:14:05conversations and didn't want to blog
- 1:14:07about it because now you're a founder,
- 1:14:08you don't have time to do that. And I
- 1:14:10just found like having these like open
- 1:14:12kind of like podcast style, like we're
- 1:14:14just capturing these live.
- 1:14:15And I listen to a lot of medium podcasts
- 1:14:18as well myself and I hear these amazing
- 1:14:19experts and I hear their stories and I
- 1:14:21just really thought it would be so cool
- 1:14:23if there was a place where those guests
- 1:14:26from the podcast if they had opted into
- 1:14:27it like could be accessible
- 1:14:29like I want to learn more.
- 1:14:30I want to go deeper than what it was that
- 1:14:32I just heard there. So this idea around
- 1:14:34okay if I'm building a brand I need to
- 1:14:36build a community is there a place to
- 1:14:37house this community. How do we start to
- 1:14:40inspire other people who might want to
- 1:14:43follow like a similar path, but
- 1:14:44really make it their own. And I'm so
- 1:14:48grateful to everybody that was willing to
- 1:14:50talk to me in the beginning when I had
- 1:14:51really no no ask. And I just found
- 1:14:54there's so much pressure to like when you
- 1:14:56reach out over LinkedIn for a coffee chat
- 1:14:58there has to be an action item there has
- 1:15:00to be a deliverable but you're just
- 1:15:02information gathering and you're just
- 1:15:03trying to figure it out.
- 1:15:05Mentors have always been so important to
- 1:15:08me. So I was trying to bring in a little
- 1:15:09bit of that thinking and was like, okay,
- 1:15:11we need a place to put these people. And
- 1:15:13then ultimately when Serena and I met,
- 1:15:16and I'll kind of let her
- 1:15:18tell the story of how we
- 1:15:20were able to do whatever happened. But we
- 1:15:22had very similar ideas and like
- 1:15:24complimentary parts and things that we
- 1:15:26wanted to work on. So I just remember one
- 1:15:28of the things that we really aligned on
- 1:15:30up front was that there is
- 1:15:31so much good work being done.
- 1:15:34And sort of a
- 1:16:04in people aren't
- 1:16:06understanding that our lives every day
- 1:16:08and the impact that our
- 1:16:09actions have on the ocean,
- 1:16:11how do you even start to
- 1:16:12build that conversation
- 1:16:13when there's so much on
- 1:16:15the climate change side
- 1:16:17or climate action that's
- 1:16:19still just very ambiguous
- 1:16:20and confusing and people
- 1:16:21just really didn't know
- 1:16:22where to start.
- 1:16:23So that was kind of
- 1:16:24where this problem we started
- 1:16:25to noodle on of how do
- 1:16:26we build this knowledge
- 1:16:28and action hub to be able
- 1:16:31to lead with those stories
- 1:16:33and let people to come and connect
- 1:16:34and then find a way to
- 1:16:36take action in their life
- 1:16:38through the way that
- 1:16:39they live, work and play.
- 1:16:41So I'll pass it to Serena.
- 1:16:44Nice.
- 1:16:44No, I love that.
- 1:16:46And I love the reminder of your story
- 1:16:47because it just goes to show
- 1:16:49that all of these
- 1:16:51different converging backgrounds
- 1:16:53that you had led you to
- 1:16:55water in various ways, right?
- 1:16:57Which is, I think a
- 1:16:58bit of the loss narrative
- 1:17:00for the general population
- 1:17:01around how the ocean connects to them
- 1:17:04and why everybody should care really.
- 1:17:06So kind of then we'll
- 1:17:07get into the mission
- 1:17:08of the undertow I know,
- 1:17:09but it just goes to show
- 1:17:10you don't need to have a
- 1:17:12marine science background
- 1:17:13or kind of that deep
- 1:17:15scientific background
- 1:17:16to begin exploring this path.
- 1:17:19So my background is a little bit more of
- 1:17:21that corporate path.
- 1:17:22I was in management consulting,
- 1:17:24early, early days I was in mining.
- 1:17:26So, you know, the
- 1:17:27other side, if you will.
- 1:17:31But then I started moving into tech.
- 1:17:34Through tech, I started getting exposed
- 1:17:36to a whole bunch of startups,
- 1:17:37whether it was at Microsoft or startups,
- 1:17:40being in a FinTech myself.
- 1:17:41So during that FinTech boom, you know,
- 1:17:43when everybody was like,
- 1:17:45FinTech's not a thing.
- 1:17:45And then all of a sudden, you know, the
- 1:17:47largest kind of exits.
- 1:17:51And I wanted to really start to think
- 1:17:53about, like, what do I want to focus on?
- 1:17:54And I had a mentor of my
- 1:17:56reach out for an opportunity.
- 1:17:57And I was curious about it
- 1:17:58because what it allowed me to do
- 1:18:01is get my foot in the door with climate.
- 1:18:03I knew eventually somewhere
- 1:18:04my path would lead to climate.
- 1:18:06Just didn't know how, because I came from
- 1:18:07such this like traditional tech and
- 1:18:09corporate background.
- 1:18:12But it was really incredible because I
- 1:18:14was like, OK, like, let
- 1:18:14me get my foot in the door.
- 1:18:16The place was Mars Discovery District.
- 1:18:17There's about twelve
- 1:18:18hundred startups there.
- 1:18:19It's one of the largest in North America
- 1:18:21and in Toronto itself.
- 1:18:23And what I got to see there was the
- 1:18:25incredible power of
- 1:18:26not just enterprise tech,
- 1:18:27but climate tech as well.
- 1:18:29And, you know, through that, I was doing
- 1:18:31actually I was wearing way
- 1:18:32too many hats, to be fair.
- 1:18:34I was I was doing my role at Mars and
- 1:18:37then I was also
- 1:18:38standing up social nonprofit.
- 1:18:42CLAR, the Coalition of
- 1:18:43Innovation Leaders Against Racism.
- 1:18:45We've recently pivoted that to advancing
- 1:18:47respect, where I got to work with
- 1:18:49executives across some of Canada's top
- 1:18:52innovation companies,
- 1:18:53tech and innovation that combined
- 1:18:55academia, universities and research
- 1:18:58startups themselves and
- 1:18:59some government partners.
- 1:19:00And so what I started to really think
- 1:19:03about is how how do all of these networks
- 1:19:06support climate change?
- 1:19:11And then for me, climate
- 1:19:13was a big, broad thing.
- 1:19:14But because I wasn't deep into it yet, I
- 1:19:16had to start understanding
- 1:19:17where I wanted to play in climate.
- 1:19:20And with all the hats that I was wearing,
- 1:19:22it's very hard to get enough thinking
- 1:19:24space to get that clarity.
- 1:19:28And so I wanted to take a break and
- 1:19:31create that space for myself while being
- 1:19:33productive and maybe learning down a path
- 1:19:35that I thought was interesting,
- 1:19:36which led me to an internship in the
- 1:19:40Cayman Islands Central
- 1:19:42Caribbean Marine Institute.
- 1:19:43Wow. And I thought, yeah, I was like, you
- 1:19:46know what, I love water.
- 1:19:48I love the ocean.
- 1:19:51I'd love to spend more time in it, but I
- 1:19:53don't understand enough.
- 1:19:54I know it plays a really big role living
- 1:19:56in Canada, largest coastline, access to
- 1:19:59the Arctic, fresh
- 1:20:00water, plus, plus, plus.
- 1:20:01I was like, there's something here and I
- 1:20:03just don't know what it is.
- 1:20:04So I knew I needed to build my knowledge.
- 1:20:06So I went on this internship, took a
- 1:20:09break from I had very
- 1:20:11supportive leaders, thankfully.
- 1:20:12So I took a break from both of my roles.
- 1:20:14I was still kind of doing some of that
- 1:20:16work, to be fair, writing proposals in
- 1:20:19the middle of the night.
- 1:20:20But I connected to the ocean and I got to
- 1:20:23meet incredible researchers and
- 1:20:26scientists from Woods Hole, from the
- 1:20:29Smithsonian, from University of Florida,
- 1:20:32from folks from the University of Elat.
- 1:20:35And so and that's where I actually got my
- 1:20:37open water certification.
- 1:20:39And that was just a nice place to do it.
- 1:20:40And I feel kind of spoiled.
- 1:20:43I'm not going to lie.
- 1:20:46Everybody warned me that like you are
- 1:20:48going to get you're going to be.
- 1:20:51It's going to be a different experience
- 1:20:52when you go to other places.
- 1:20:54Yeah, you're being spoiled.
- 1:20:55Right. I'm being spoiled.
- 1:20:57But what I got to learn is that people
- 1:20:59were doing, Amanda, to
- 1:21:00your point, incredible stuff.
- 1:21:02There was an intersection of tech and
- 1:21:05ocean science happening.
- 1:21:07I just hadn't been
- 1:21:08exposed to it just yet.
- 1:21:11And there was more that we could do.
- 1:21:14So that got my hat up thinking about, OK,
- 1:21:17well, what are my strengths around
- 1:21:19understanding the corporate pathways,
- 1:21:22understanding the commercialization
- 1:21:24pathways for startups and then
- 1:21:27understanding that there's this huge
- 1:21:29climate space that's taking off and huge
- 1:21:30opportunity for Canada.
- 1:21:32And I just needed to know what was
- 1:21:34happening to learn more because what I'm
- 1:21:37really good at in my previous roles is
- 1:21:38building ecosystems, building
- 1:21:40communities, building
- 1:21:41coalitions of action.
- 1:21:43And so I know that this is a big enough
- 1:21:45problem where any single one individual
- 1:21:47operating in their silo,
- 1:21:49that's going to move it.
- 1:21:52A millimeter of where it
- 1:21:54actually needs to move.
- 1:21:55And that's not for the wrong intention.
- 1:21:57It's just it's such a big problem that
- 1:22:00we're trying to change or solve for.
- 1:22:02So how do you break that down and do it
- 1:22:04efficiently and effectively?
- 1:22:08And for a lot of folks like myself who,
- 1:22:10you know, want to see a
- 1:22:12future with clean oceans,
- 1:22:16nature that we can share with our future
- 1:22:20families, our nieces, our nephews.
- 1:22:23You know, I started really thinking about
- 1:22:25how I dedicate all of those hours I was
- 1:22:27spending on really important things to me
- 1:22:29into something that really I wanted to
- 1:22:32wake up and like do every day and be next
- 1:22:35to you and share with my friends and
- 1:22:37family and community.
- 1:22:38And so coming back from that sabbatical
- 1:22:42or whatever you want to call it,
- 1:22:44internship, time off, really just
- 1:22:47solidified that I had a strength to to
- 1:22:50bring to this ecosystem.
- 1:22:53I didn't have to be the only expert, but
- 1:22:55I imagine I'm not the only person trying
- 1:22:57to navigate how I can
- 1:22:58actually contribute to this.
- 1:22:59And as I started meeting people, a lot of
- 1:23:03folks had came from
- 1:23:04more corporate backgrounds.
- 1:23:05A lot of the folks leading the
- 1:23:06accelerators and the incubators and some
- 1:23:08of the startups came from more of a
- 1:23:09corporate background.
- 1:23:11And a lot of the folks in my network who
- 1:23:13are like, you know, what's this thing
- 1:23:14that you're like this
- 1:23:16thing that you're doing?
- 1:23:17I've never heard of the blue economy.
- 1:23:21I was I was shocked at how many folks in
- 1:23:23my networks that I've never
- 1:23:24heard of the blue economy.
- 1:23:25Meanwhile, for myself, I'm
- 1:23:26like, but you live in Canada.
- 1:23:28So there's obviously a disconnect and an
- 1:23:30opportunity to really start making this
- 1:23:33conversation, I think, a little bit more
- 1:23:35accessible and inclusive because
- 1:23:36everybody is connected
- 1:23:38to water and the ocean.
- 1:23:40They do and can play a part
- 1:23:43in some small or large way.
- 1:23:45It's just we got to
- 1:23:46give them the pathways.
- 1:23:47And so I started going to conferences
- 1:23:50and, you know, talking to the
- 1:23:52accelerators and the incubators and some
- 1:23:54of the startups and trying to leverage my
- 1:23:56network as much as possible to to really
- 1:23:58immerse myself in this.
- 1:24:00And that's where I met Amanda in
- 1:24:02Barcelona at the UN
- 1:24:04Ocean Decade Conference.
- 1:24:07I was just I started following people on
- 1:24:09Instagram and
- 1:24:09LinkedIn and all that stuff.
- 1:24:10And I messaged an artist, actually, that
- 1:24:13I really appreciated the
- 1:24:14work that she was doing.
- 1:24:15And I was really inspired by the
- 1:24:17adventures she was taking, how she was
- 1:24:19using art to communicate that to folks.
- 1:24:21And I said, hey, are you going to be at
- 1:24:24the UN Ocean Decade?
- 1:24:25And she said, no, but funny enough, I
- 1:24:28have another Canadian
- 1:24:28friend who will be there.
- 1:24:30Let me introduce you both.
- 1:24:32And so she introduced me to Amanda.
- 1:24:34We started chatting and coordinating to
- 1:24:36to meet at the conference.
- 1:24:38And, you know, this is in between all the
- 1:24:40conference activity.
- 1:24:40And I'm I'm a sponge.
- 1:24:42I'm trying to soak up as much information
- 1:24:43because I want to see how all these
- 1:24:45pieces start to fit.
- 1:24:46But we connected, grabbed a beverage on
- 1:24:50the beach, you know, inspired by.
- 1:24:53Yeah, inspired by the ocean.
- 1:24:55And we just started talking about her
- 1:24:57journey, which I was like, yeah, I'm
- 1:24:59having the same problem,
- 1:25:00like building ocean knowledge.
- 1:25:02I'm so thankful to the people who are
- 1:25:03making time for me to to
- 1:25:06educate me and build my awareness.
- 1:25:10But like, it's all in silos, right?
- 1:25:13And I could start to see see
- 1:25:14that pattern kind of emerge.
- 1:25:16And I had no intention of of
- 1:25:19proposing my idea to Amanda.
- 1:25:22I was just like, you know, this is just
- 1:25:23going to be, you know, you're an in
- 1:25:25person coffee cat, you know, or whatever.
- 1:25:28And but then I just I just felt like it
- 1:25:31was the right time to to just say, hey,
- 1:25:34we're both trying to do the same thing.
- 1:25:37If I'm going to live by the principle of
- 1:25:38doing things efficiently and scalably and
- 1:25:41like leveraging people with strength, she
- 1:25:43has a strength that I don't have.
- 1:25:45Yeah. And so why don't we come together
- 1:25:47and see if there's enough alignment in
- 1:25:50both of our ideas that we could work
- 1:25:53together to be more efficient.
- 1:25:54But then also really lean on each other's
- 1:25:57strengths to build faster and to build
- 1:26:01more thoughtfully and more inclusively
- 1:26:03and with all of those things in mind.
- 1:26:05And so I said, hey, Amanda,
- 1:26:08do you want to be no pressure?
- 1:26:11But like, do you want
- 1:26:11to be like co-founders?
- 1:26:15Yes. And then, yeah, then we just
- 1:26:18proposed and then we just
- 1:26:20kind of took it from there.
- 1:26:21We're like, and we were very I think we
- 1:26:22were very pragmatic about it.
- 1:26:25We respected each other's IP.
- 1:26:27I know Amanda had been working on this.
- 1:26:29She knows I had been working on this.
- 1:26:31And so we said, you know, if you're
- 1:26:33comfortable, like, let's put NDA's in
- 1:26:35place and make sure, you
- 1:26:36know, all of those things.
- 1:26:37But let's not let those early stage ideas
- 1:26:41be the thing that stop us from going down
- 1:26:43the path of really understanding if
- 1:26:45there's an opportunity for
- 1:26:47us to do this better together.
- 1:26:50And, you know, I think that's part of the
- 1:26:52values alignment that we had was like we
- 1:26:54wanted to respect that IP.
- 1:26:55We wanted to respect that effort that we
- 1:26:57had, you know, sweat equity that we had
- 1:27:00already both put into things.
- 1:27:02And and I think that's a lot of the
- 1:27:04principles that we
- 1:27:05continue to collaborate on.
- 1:27:07And, you know, Andrew, I hope you
- 1:27:09eventually felt when we reached out to
- 1:27:11you to say, hey, are you here?
- 1:27:14We have an idea. And
- 1:27:15this is where we're headed.
- 1:27:16Are you interested in joining in?
- 1:27:18So I'll leave it at that because, Andrew,
- 1:27:20I think this is where you
- 1:27:21might want to pick up the baton.
- 1:27:23Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:27:24I mean, this was and I've described to
- 1:27:26other people and including my wife, I'm
- 1:27:28just like, this was the
- 1:27:28perfect opportunity for me.
- 1:27:30It was it was something that was very
- 1:27:32different from what I was seeing in the
- 1:27:35marine science field, even
- 1:27:37the marine conservation field.
- 1:27:38It was something where, you know, I've
- 1:27:40been advocating for collaboration.
- 1:27:44I've been advocating for
- 1:27:45sharing of information.
- 1:27:46I've been advocating for supporting one
- 1:27:48another within within this
- 1:27:50ocean conservation field.
- 1:27:53Right. And and this was when when when
- 1:27:55you guys presented this to
- 1:27:57me, I was just like this.
- 1:27:58This is it. Like right
- 1:28:00off the bat, I was like, OK.
- 1:28:02And at first I was like, I'm just like,
- 1:28:03OK, so I'm going to am I
- 1:28:04going to be part of this?
- 1:28:05Is this something that I want to go down?
- 1:28:08And I just looked at, you know, I went
- 1:28:10back to what I've been talking about over
- 1:28:11the last decade doing the show.
- 1:28:13And I was like, this could work.
- 1:28:15And I really see the podcast as a big
- 1:28:18piece of of the undertow.
- 1:28:21And so I was like, OK, like, you know,
- 1:28:23I'm very careful of, you
- 1:28:26know, who I have on the podcast.
- 1:28:27I'm very careful of who I work with and
- 1:28:30who I collaborate with.
- 1:28:31And I was and who I share my show with.
- 1:28:33And I've just been like, OK, yes.
- 1:28:36Like this is something where I get I and
- 1:28:39I still to this day, I
- 1:28:40continue to be excited about this.
- 1:28:42We meet usually about twice a week and
- 1:28:44we're discussing this stuff.
- 1:28:46And and I'm like, oh, I
- 1:28:48really start to get excited.
- 1:28:50You know, you know,
- 1:28:51I'm excited to launch.
- 1:28:52I'm excited to get
- 1:28:53people in the undertow.
- 1:28:55I'm excited to meet people.
- 1:28:58I'm excited to engage with people.
- 1:29:01And I'm excited to work with the both of
- 1:29:02you because I feel as though our
- 1:29:04background, as I mentioned before,
- 1:29:06complement each other so well, you know.
- 1:29:09And and we all come with this specific
- 1:29:11expertise and together the way we met and
- 1:29:16the way we're willing to move forward as
- 1:29:19it as like a unit and go for it.
- 1:29:22Be like, yes, like this is this is great.
- 1:29:25And we all put in our own, you know, two
- 1:29:27cents into every strategy point that
- 1:29:29we're looking at or any
- 1:29:31action point that we're looking at.
- 1:29:32We're like, OK, this is this is the way
- 1:29:34we're going forward.
- 1:29:35And I love that aspect.
- 1:29:37And I am so excited that
- 1:29:39we get to work together.
- 1:29:41And I'm excited that we've got to do this
- 1:29:43podcast today and
- 1:29:44talk about the undertow.
- 1:29:46And the one thing that really got me
- 1:29:47excited is, Amanda, when you gave the
- 1:29:51pitch and you were like, this is the
- 1:29:53undertow and this is why
- 1:29:55we're calling it the undertow.
- 1:29:56So can you do that right now?
- 1:29:58Don't want to put you on the spot.
- 1:30:00I'm kind of putting you on the spot.
- 1:30:01But you have such a good way of putting
- 1:30:03it of where the term like where it where
- 1:30:07like the idea of calling the undertow,
- 1:30:09the undertow, where it came from and how
- 1:30:10it fits into what we're doing.
- 1:30:13I love this. There's just so much
- 1:30:15symbolism and how this all came to be.
- 1:30:19And again, as Serena was talking about,
- 1:30:21like we truly put on paper for days while
- 1:30:24we were in Barcelona,
- 1:30:25like what are your values?
- 1:30:27What are mine?
- 1:30:28Like, what was your
- 1:30:28intention behind this?
- 1:30:30And what is the real problem that we're
- 1:30:32trying to solve or the
- 1:30:33solutions that we want to explore?
- 1:30:35What is this like identity?
- 1:30:36And what's this transformation that we
- 1:30:38want this platform to
- 1:30:39guide people through?
- 1:30:41And you had another like your initiative
- 1:30:44was going to be called the undertow.
- 1:30:46It was a podcast.
- 1:30:47Right.
- 1:30:48And I just remember thinking like that
- 1:30:51has to be the name of this
- 1:30:52thing that we do together.
- 1:30:54Because if we're really trying to
- 1:30:56counteract this like fear or apathy that
- 1:30:59people have towards water in the ocean, I
- 1:31:01just find I'm a diver, a divemaster now.
- 1:31:04And when I tell people I'm so excited to
- 1:31:06go diving, a lot of them
- 1:31:08say, oh, the ocean's so scary.
- 1:31:09Like why? And so I'm like that I was
- 1:31:11being met with that.
- 1:31:12That's before I started spending all this
- 1:31:14time with these ocean lovers.
- 1:31:15But I was so frequently met with that.
- 1:31:18And it struck me so much as you're not
- 1:31:20going to take action for
- 1:31:21something unless you care about it.
- 1:31:23So we have to figure out how to create
- 1:31:25positive water experiences because once
- 1:31:29you feel that like I haven't met anybody
- 1:31:31who stuck their head underwater, like
- 1:31:33snorkeling, diving, whatever, who's been
- 1:31:35like, oh, this is awful
- 1:31:36unless the reef is dead.
- 1:31:39But most people are are like and when you
- 1:31:43talk to people who have had that moment,
- 1:31:45had that awakening, whatever it was, no
- 1:31:48matter what sport it was or just like
- 1:31:49they went for a
- 1:31:50romantic walk on the beach.
- 1:31:51Like water is weaved into so many of
- 1:31:53these different stories.
- 1:31:54So we're like, OK, we need to lead with
- 1:31:56this love element and
- 1:31:57like counteract that fear.
- 1:32:00So the idea behind choosing something
- 1:32:02that people typically fear like the
- 1:32:03undertow, because it's so
- 1:32:04unpredictable, you can't trust it.
- 1:32:07It is just like this
- 1:32:07ultimate fear of the unknown.
- 1:32:11And once you're in like you're forced to
- 1:32:15just like surrender to it.
- 1:32:16And I started reading a little bit more
- 1:32:18on like how are under toes formed?
- 1:32:20Like what is this word actually mean?
- 1:32:22And then I learned like
- 1:32:22their strongest in the shallows.
- 1:32:24I actually met someone the other night
- 1:32:25who said that ankle deep, he was swept
- 1:32:28out and now is like so afraid of water.
- 1:32:30So you're in the shallows.
- 1:32:31You're just kind of on waiting.
- 1:32:35So like I would equate that to somebody
- 1:32:37who's just like
- 1:32:37starting to dip their toes in.
- 1:32:38So now the undertow pulls you in.
- 1:32:40But the thing that I found that was
- 1:32:42really interesting and
- 1:32:43Andrew, you're a scientist.
- 1:32:44So correct me if my research is wrong.
- 1:32:46So my understanding is that it weakens
- 1:32:49the deeper that you get.
- 1:32:50And that's where it
- 1:32:51opens up to create new ways.
- 1:32:54So this idea that you are we're pulling
- 1:32:56you into the undertow, we're pulling
- 1:32:57these people that I guess I have to
- 1:32:59actually pitch what the undertow is so
- 1:33:01that this all makes sense.
- 1:33:03Yes. That's the philosophy.
- 1:33:05So what the undertow is is a marketplace
- 1:33:09for ocean knowledge and ocean action.
- 1:33:12But powered by the stories of
- 1:33:14this human ocean connection.
- 1:33:16So we really wanted to create a place
- 1:33:18where we could highlight people who are
- 1:33:19moving through this motion of their water
- 1:33:23is having their awakening.
- 1:33:25Now they're realizing that that depth and
- 1:33:27personal connection they've had to water
- 1:33:29in whatever way, shape or form has now
- 1:33:31inspired them to take
- 1:33:33action through their work.
- 1:33:35And maybe they've initiated an
- 1:33:37organization, a project or something.
- 1:33:39But they have now decided the ocean is my
- 1:33:41life, water is my world, and I'm going to
- 1:33:44just champion that all day long.
- 1:33:46So it was just this interesting
- 1:33:48combination that combined that like sense
- 1:33:50of urgency that we need to have with also
- 1:33:54taking something that is typically seen
- 1:33:56in a negative light.
- 1:33:58But wanting to reframe it that once you
- 1:34:01deepen your knowledge on something, you
- 1:34:02can't ignore like the power that it has.
- 1:34:05And from the shoreline,
- 1:34:09you can't see the undertow.
- 1:34:10So it's like there is so
- 1:34:11much power in that unseen.
- 1:34:13And if we could build up this collective
- 1:34:15of people who are rallying towards this
- 1:34:18mission, which ultimately is how do we
- 1:34:22create 10 million new ocean connections
- 1:34:25and unlock five million dollars in ocean
- 1:34:28action by World Ocean Day 2030?
- 1:34:31That's a big ask.
- 1:34:32That's a really big goal.
- 1:34:33And so for three of us to sit here and be
- 1:34:35like, we're just going to do this without
- 1:34:36anybody else like that's crazy.
- 1:34:40So it really spoke to we need everybody.
- 1:34:42So whatever your superpower is, whether
- 1:34:44you're working in climate or not, maybe
- 1:34:46you've never considered the connection
- 1:34:48between ocean and climate.
- 1:34:49You're in a
- 1:34:50completely different industry.
- 1:34:52Maybe you're marketing wine and now
- 1:34:53you're trying to figure out how to bring
- 1:34:55that skill set over into the space.
- 1:34:57There's so much room for everybody.
- 1:35:01We just ask you to lead with water and
- 1:35:03choose a way to take action for it.
- 1:35:08Yeah. And and I think the other side of
- 1:35:10that is, Amanda, you mentioned like folks
- 1:35:12coming in and changing their life.
- 1:35:16Part of the undertow is to also inspire
- 1:35:19just everyday individual action. Right.
- 1:35:22To your point, a lot of people at this
- 1:35:24unseen thing, they're like, oh, you know,
- 1:35:27I don't see the ocean.
- 1:35:28I don't live by the ocean like it doesn't
- 1:35:30matter. It doesn't affect me.
- 1:35:31That's that's not our
- 1:35:33belief at the undertow. Right.
- 1:35:35It really is that it connects everybody.
- 1:35:37And so you might not know and see it and
- 1:35:40you might not initially feel like you
- 1:35:45have a part to play.
- 1:35:46But if you just flow and let let us pull
- 1:35:48you in, let the undertow pull you into
- 1:35:50all of the ways that you
- 1:35:52might be connected to water,
- 1:35:54whether that is vacation, whether that's
- 1:35:56adventure and sport, music, arts,
- 1:36:01science, research, innovation,
- 1:36:02technology, there's an element that is
- 1:36:05connected to everybody.
- 1:36:07And they call it the what
- 1:36:09the ocean is our lifeblood.
- 1:36:12And so everybody can make a change,
- 1:36:16whether it's on an individual level
- 1:36:18within their communities or
- 1:36:20within their organizations.
- 1:36:21And so this marketplace is to now we're
- 1:36:26now going to throw all the puns at you to
- 1:36:29create all the pathways.
- 1:36:31I'm just putting that out there of how
- 1:36:34you can take action. Right.
- 1:36:35And so we don't want people to feel
- 1:36:37paralyzed by not having enough knowledge
- 1:36:41in order to feel like
- 1:36:42they can take action.
- 1:36:43Think of this as your way of taking bite
- 1:36:45sized pieces of knowledge and then tying
- 1:36:48that to a tangible
- 1:36:50change that you can make.
- 1:36:51And so we don't want people to feel like
- 1:37:04they can take action.
- 1:37:11And so that's really part of the power of
- 1:37:19the undertow is that we create that
- 1:37:22platform for you to also inspire that
- 1:37:25action side of change.
- 1:37:27And I think also, too, is in Amanda, you
- 1:37:30kind of said it when you're talking about
- 1:37:32when you first get dragged in the
- 1:37:33undertow, it's chaos, right?
- 1:37:35You're you're panicking what's going on.
- 1:37:37But I've seen that happen so many times.
- 1:37:39People starting to, you know, listen to
- 1:37:41the podcast or starting to learn about
- 1:37:43some of the major issues that are
- 1:37:45happening with the ocean, climate change,
- 1:37:46plastic pollution, overfishing.
- 1:37:49It's a lot to take in and the right away
- 1:37:52we want to go drastic right away. We want
- 1:37:54to, you know, we want to live, as I
- 1:37:56mentioned, like four better ocean.
- 1:37:58We want to live as best we can. But it's
- 1:38:01very difficult to do that. And so it's
- 1:38:03very easy to just go, oh, I'm
- 1:38:05going to just live this way.
- 1:38:06But then you look around at some of the
- 1:38:09products that are available, some of the
- 1:38:10greenwashing that companies are doing.
- 1:38:12It could be very complex to try and
- 1:38:14figure out. I mean, look, the three of us
- 1:38:15have been trying to figure out how to buy
- 1:38:17Canadian for the last month.
- 1:38:19And even then that's difficult because
- 1:38:20there's so many layers. Well, imagine
- 1:38:22trying to scale that up to climate change
- 1:38:25and scale that up to buying like the
- 1:38:27right type of products.
- 1:38:28And if you buy the wrong part, somebody's
- 1:38:29like, well, you're not actually doing
- 1:38:31what you're supposed to be doing.
- 1:38:32And I think the goal of the undertow is
- 1:38:35when we bring you in and you join is to
- 1:38:39guide you through that
- 1:38:40process, that chaotic process.
- 1:38:42And to just like kind of hold your hand,
- 1:38:45so to speak, and just be
- 1:38:46like, you know what, it's OK.
- 1:38:48Like, yes, the ocean has some problems.
- 1:38:50The world has some problems. But we're
- 1:38:52going to take you through this and we're
- 1:38:53going to show you the
- 1:38:53little things that you can do.
- 1:38:54But we're also going to show you some of
- 1:38:56the big things if you are in a position
- 1:38:57to do so, what you can do.
- 1:38:59You know, that could be at the corporate
- 1:39:01level, that could be at the individual
- 1:39:02level, that could be
- 1:39:03at a community level.
- 1:39:05There's so many things that you can do
- 1:39:06that will help you not only just start
- 1:39:09that down that path, but
- 1:39:11inspire you even more to do it.
- 1:39:13And like, I have to admit, like when I do
- 1:39:15something, even just buy a small product
- 1:39:18that I know is good for the ocean, I feel
- 1:39:21so good about myself.
- 1:39:23And I start talking about it to
- 1:39:24everybody. I know that sounds weird, but
- 1:39:25I start talking to
- 1:39:26everybody, people on this podcast.
- 1:39:28But that's and that's just what we want
- 1:39:29to do. And we want to provide you with
- 1:39:32that and provide you with like a safe
- 1:39:34space to understand
- 1:39:35that things are complex.
- 1:39:38It's not as easy as we think to fix some
- 1:39:39of these problems, but there's different
- 1:39:41things that we can do to do that.
- 1:39:43And we are going to help you guide you
- 1:39:45through that. And wherever you are in
- 1:39:47your stage of life, whatever, wherever
- 1:39:50you are in the world, that you can take
- 1:39:51part in some sort of capacity and then
- 1:39:53hopefully build up and then build that
- 1:39:55repertoire of like, OK,
- 1:39:56I've gone from one action that may have
- 1:39:59seemed little to like just gaining your
- 1:40:01knowledge to all of a sudden ramping up
- 1:40:03and be like, hey, maybe I came up with a
- 1:40:05business idea that will help.
- 1:40:07Or maybe like my entire family is living
- 1:40:09as as clean as can be, you know, and that
- 1:40:12kind of stuff. And then you find out you
- 1:40:13save some money on stuff or who knows,
- 1:40:15you know, a lot of the times that climate
- 1:40:17and when you start to change for climate
- 1:40:18change, things start to get cheaper when
- 1:40:21you when you really look at it.
- 1:40:22So so, yeah, I love that. And I think
- 1:40:25what's really important is that, you
- 1:40:27know, I still buy plastic, you know, like
- 1:40:30I there are just some things we're human
- 1:40:33at the end of the day.
- 1:40:34And so I think another important element
- 1:40:35of this community is the human ocean
- 1:40:38connection isn't just about your what
- 1:40:42inspired you to start
- 1:40:43caring about the water.
- 1:40:44It's also to bring in the human element
- 1:40:46of things. Right. What moves
- 1:40:47you? What are you afraid of?
- 1:40:49Let's have those real conversations and
- 1:40:52inspire each other to take action without
- 1:40:54the judgment and the
- 1:40:55fear of getting it wrong.
- 1:40:57Right. Listen, there's enough pressure in
- 1:40:59the world to get things right. We don't
- 1:41:02want that to be the thing that stops you
- 1:41:03from making those little changes. Right.
- 1:41:06Yeah. I'm on a journey.
- 1:41:07Amanda is on a journey. Andrew, I'm sure
- 1:41:09you're still on your journey. Right. By
- 1:41:12no means is my life perfectly ocean safe
- 1:41:15and free and or anything. Right.
- 1:41:18But do I have a desire to what's my
- 1:41:21what's my why behind this one? Because
- 1:41:24I've seen now what's
- 1:41:26under the water and I love it.
- 1:41:27And from my days of snorkeling and
- 1:41:29freediving through to becoming an actual
- 1:41:31diver, the change that
- 1:41:34I've seen has been startling.
- 1:41:36And I think about this from what about my
- 1:41:40niece and nephew? What about my future
- 1:41:41children? Like I would love to go take
- 1:41:44them snorkeling or diving.
- 1:41:45I would love to take them surfing to try
- 1:41:48out surfing. But will will it be the same
- 1:41:52or can we make it better so that they can
- 1:41:56enjoy and be inspired by all the things
- 1:41:58that I've been inspired by?
- 1:42:01Yeah, Amanda, you talked about the
- 1:42:02creativity components to like I do my
- 1:42:06best thinking looking out into space,
- 1:42:10which, you know, I'm not going to space
- 1:42:13the water or looking
- 1:42:15out into the vast ocean.
- 1:42:17Like that is the thing that calms me that
- 1:42:20is. And this is something that Amanda and
- 1:42:21I talked about, you know, something that
- 1:42:23calms me, sparks my creativity.
- 1:42:25There's a reason why CEOs have offices
- 1:42:28that typically look out on vast expanses
- 1:42:30or have leader leadership retreats that
- 1:42:33are on the water because it is
- 1:42:35scientifically proven to allow you to
- 1:42:39think differently problem solving come
- 1:42:41from a more centered and grounded place.
- 1:42:43And Amanda, I know this is a huge part of
- 1:42:45what brought you to the ocean. So I'll
- 1:42:47let you speak to more
- 1:42:48of the blue mine stuff.
- 1:42:50I love all of this. And that was the
- 1:42:53biggest thing is like, if you can connect
- 1:42:54to just one thing that we can all
- 1:42:56understand, like we were talking about,
- 1:42:57you know, the lifeblood and the lungs of
- 1:43:00the planet and all these metaphors and
- 1:43:02then analogy things.
- 1:43:03But when it comes down to it, like in
- 1:43:06order to sustain the planet, like we have
- 1:43:08to sustain ourselves as people so that we
- 1:43:11can take better action for it. So when
- 1:43:12you can start to create the connection
- 1:43:14between ocean health and human health or
- 1:43:16how the well being of the world's bodies
- 1:43:18of water is connected to our well being
- 1:43:21as humans, you can follow that thread to
- 1:43:24better performance,
- 1:43:26productivity, like reduced stress.
- 1:43:27Like if we think of health issues that
- 1:43:32come, it's not just about air pollution.
- 1:43:34Like let's also talk about eco anxiety
- 1:43:36and mental health and the impacts of all
- 1:43:39of these things. And like you were
- 1:43:42talking about, Andrew, it's not about
- 1:43:43like shame based and fear.
- 1:43:47But when you cannot deny that you
- 1:43:51genuinely feel better when you go outside
- 1:43:53and take a breath of fresh air or you
- 1:43:54stare at an open body of water. And
- 1:43:57that's really where I was having my own
- 1:43:59cold water ice plunging like breath depth
- 1:44:02connection awakening in 2021.
- 1:44:04I read deep by James Nestor and I was
- 1:44:08just so blown away by the physiological
- 1:44:10changes that happened in our bodies like
- 1:44:12the deeper that we go. That led me on to
- 1:44:16blue minds and the work of Dr. Jane
- 1:44:19Nichols. And then I also picked up oceans
- 1:44:22for dummies by the kustos. And I think
- 1:44:24they wrote it as like a
- 1:44:25COVID, you know, project together.
- 1:44:27And they had one small chapter at the end
- 1:44:29of the book called the human ocean
- 1:44:31connection, which was mostly about all
- 1:44:33the negative things that humans have done
- 1:44:35to impact the planet. So it was all like
- 1:44:38garbage floating, you know, out in the
- 1:44:41ocean, kind of all of those pieces.
- 1:44:43But I started looking at the positive
- 1:44:45side was if you can start to understand
- 1:44:47that your body and your health and all of
- 1:44:49these other things absolutely connected
- 1:44:51to the health of our bodies of water,
- 1:44:53then maybe that's something that people
- 1:44:55will start to see. And it still feels
- 1:44:56like there's no simple way for somebody
- 1:45:00to just capture that.
- 1:45:00So you have to speak to them in a way
- 1:45:03that really resonates with them, which is
- 1:45:05why when you ask people like, what is
- 1:45:07your connection to water, like have them
- 1:45:09sit in that moment and think like, what
- 1:45:11are the moments where I feel most
- 1:45:13connected? And then from there, we hope
- 1:45:15that that will inspire them to want to
- 1:45:17say like, okay, yeah, there is something
- 1:45:19that I can do. Just choose one thing, you
- 1:45:22can't do everything, we
- 1:45:24can't do everything right.
- 1:45:24And the world is really being redesigned
- 1:45:28right now. So we need these solutions, we
- 1:45:30need people working on this to be able to
- 1:45:33reduce those impacts and put better ways
- 1:45:34forward. So just good to have
- 1:45:36conversations about it to be able to
- 1:45:39support each other as those feelings of
- 1:45:42anxiety and things are coming up, like
- 1:45:44certainly feeling like there are no good
- 1:45:46options, like you're getting overwhelmed,
- 1:45:48but then that kind of social learning
- 1:45:51element coming together and sharing
- 1:45:52knowledge and yeah, that's what we're doing.
- 1:45:54Yeah, I'm just I'm very inspired on a
- 1:45:57daily basis after the hundreds of coffee
- 1:45:59chats that I have, you know, in the last
- 1:46:02couple of years and hearing what other
- 1:46:03people have tried. Yeah, they've been
- 1:46:06working in other cultures and what can we
- 1:46:09like propose and try to bring back to
- 1:46:11Canada and elsewhere.
- 1:46:12Like it's a different way to learn, like
- 1:46:15I'm very much I don't learn by like
- 1:46:18traditional textbooks anywhere I love
- 1:46:21learning through other people's
- 1:46:23experiences and there's just so many
- 1:46:24different types of knowledge to be
- 1:46:25exchanged that I think that adds a lot of
- 1:46:28value when you include different
- 1:46:29perspectives as well.
- 1:46:32Definitely inspiring when you start
- 1:46:33hearing all these stories being told from
- 1:46:35all different parts of the world. I mean,
- 1:46:38that's the good part of social media is
- 1:46:40you get to connect with as many people as
- 1:46:42possible that that are within, you know,
- 1:46:44your area of interest, right?
- 1:46:45That the topic of interest and I think
- 1:46:47that's an important part and it's
- 1:46:49storytelling has always been an important
- 1:46:51part of conservation, you know, from
- 1:46:55indigenous led conservation, even to the
- 1:46:58stories that people talk about all the
- 1:47:00time when we hear science, you know, it's
- 1:47:03the reason why I started the podcast
- 1:47:04because listening to the stories of the
- 1:47:06people that I admired at conferences that
- 1:47:08I met through my work, I was just like,
- 1:47:11how do people not
- 1:47:12know about these stories?
- 1:47:13These stories like you and then straight,
- 1:47:15you kind of mentioned is like these
- 1:47:17stories get siloed as well, just as as
- 1:47:20work does and and it kind of stays within
- 1:47:23either a culture or a different part of
- 1:47:25like a specific part of the world and it
- 1:47:28doesn't get shared across across
- 1:47:30different platforms or across different
- 1:47:32countries or across different fields.
- 1:47:35And that that's frustrating to me. And so
- 1:47:36to be able to bring and bring in people
- 1:47:40within the undertow to help share their
- 1:47:41stories because everybody has a water
- 1:47:43story. It doesn't matter where you live.
- 1:47:45You live by the water that is connected
- 1:47:47to the ocean that's connected to the
- 1:47:48lifeblood of this planet and without
- 1:47:51sharing those stories and
- 1:47:53how everybody is connected.
- 1:47:54We remain disconnected, not only as
- 1:47:58people and as a species, but we remain
- 1:48:01disconnected in the work and the action
- 1:48:03that we could take. And I think this is
- 1:48:04where the undertow comes comes into play.
- 1:48:08You know, this is where we come in as
- 1:48:10fostering that community and building
- 1:48:13this platform to be like, hey, like you
- 1:48:17feel the same way we do.
- 1:48:17Like you feel frustrated. You have like
- 1:48:19certain pain points that you want to help
- 1:48:21out. You've got a story. Come and join
- 1:48:24us. You know, we'd love to to bring you
- 1:48:26in. We'll take you through the chaos.
- 1:48:28We'll get to that point where we're just
- 1:48:29floating in the ocean and enjoying our
- 1:48:31time and and being like, you know what?
- 1:48:33We got through it. We got through it
- 1:48:35together. And I think that's an
- 1:48:37important. It'll bring us closer. And
- 1:48:38just to put it as analogy, I'm a
- 1:48:40crossfitter, not a very good one. I'm a
- 1:48:42crossfitter. And the workouts, if anybody
- 1:48:44knows anything about crossfit, the
- 1:48:45workouts are brutal. And it doesn't matter if you're a crossfitter.
- 1:48:46And it doesn't matter if you are any
- 1:48:48elite athlete or you are someone who's
- 1:48:50just beginning, you work out just as
- 1:48:53hard. And they always say at the end of
- 1:48:54it, everybody's on their backs, sweating
- 1:48:56their butts off, trying to get their
- 1:48:58breath back and just wondering like, what
- 1:49:01was that? And then when you start talking
- 1:49:03about after, you're like, that was awful,
- 1:49:05but I'm so glad I did it. And you become
- 1:49:08closer to that. Again, I worked out with
- 1:49:10like games athletes before. And you know,
- 1:49:14you bond afterwards and you're just like, okay, I'm going to do this.
- 1:49:15Like, okay, like that was really cool.
- 1:49:18And yeah, it sucked. But we got through
- 1:49:20it and we're better for it on the other
- 1:49:22side. And I think that's that's exactly
- 1:49:24what we want to do with the undertow is
- 1:49:27bring that the people in. Yeah, we'll do
- 1:49:29a little suffering together.
- 1:49:30There's, you know, it's not all good. And
- 1:49:32then we bring in and but we get through
- 1:49:33it on the other side and we're like, you
- 1:49:34know what? I'm really happy where I am
- 1:49:36right now. No matter where you are in
- 1:49:38your journey, you can always just kind of
- 1:49:40put it together and just be like, okay,
- 1:49:43like we did this together.
- 1:49:43And you know, we're going to continue to
- 1:49:46do it together and we're going to
- 1:49:47continue to build sort of our capacity to
- 1:49:50do more hard work and to do it together
- 1:49:52and be able to get through it on the
- 1:49:54other side. So that's
- 1:49:55what I love about this.
- 1:49:57Now, with this podcast is not just to
- 1:49:59inform you what we're doing, but we are
- 1:50:01launching very, very shortly. So to do
