- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's go to the ramos Law hotline.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Car accident you need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney
- 0:04Speaker 2: Ramoslaw dot com. Jeff Legwalld of ESPN dot com joins us,
- 0:08Speaker 2: as he does every Thursday.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Hello Jeff, good morning fellas.
- 0:12Speaker 4: Hey, I was reading you at ESPN dot com. I
- 0:17Speaker 4: like your stuff. When you talk about the biggest upgrade,
- 0:21Speaker 4: you couched it pretty well about the Broncos wide receiver corps, right,
- 0:24Speaker 4: you know that will it open up downfield for bon Nix?
- 0:28Speaker 4: His completion percentage at what thirty eight point seven? Am
- 0:31Speaker 4: I getting this right?
- 0:33Speaker 3: At some point we'll.
- 0:34Speaker 5: Get a question.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I like your stuff. On the defensive side though,
- 0:39Speaker 4: right defensive end? Is that a really big concern for
- 0:41Speaker 4: the Denver Broncos.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Well, moj I always looked at it as like what
- 0:46Speaker 3: snaps do that? What?
- 0:48Speaker 6: You know, what play count do they have to fill?
- 0:52Speaker 6: And John Franklin Myers, you know, didn't make a Pro
- 0:56Speaker 6: Bowl here, but he was a very very good player.
- 0:59Speaker 6: That impact did Zach Allen's ability to lead the NFL
- 1:04Speaker 6: and quarterback hits to Nick A Benito's ability to sack
- 1:08Speaker 6: the quarterback. He impacted things, you know, that's that's several
- 1:13Speaker 6: hundred snaps that have to be replaced in some way,
- 1:18Speaker 6: whether that's somebody in house like Jasa Rique or the
- 1:22Speaker 6: young rookie, but that you know, the concern is those
- 1:27Speaker 6: snaps have to be filled. And on a team that
- 1:29Speaker 6: won fourteen games and went to the AFC Championship last year,
- 1:35Speaker 6: the only real snaps that have to be filled are
- 1:38Speaker 6: insidelinebacker where Greenlaw was Franklin Myers. Those are the significant
- 1:44Speaker 6: areas and are both on defense.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Why did the Broncos sign Nathan Peterman a quarterback?
- 1:51Speaker 6: You know, Vick, I think this time of the year,
- 1:54Speaker 6: especially for rookie mini camps, because the rules allow you
- 1:58Speaker 6: to bring the tryout players in for some of your
- 2:01Speaker 6: offseason stuff and they need arms. You know, you just
- 2:05Speaker 6: got to have people to chuck the ball around a
- 2:08Speaker 6: little bit too.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So, and I think Sean Payton always likes the idea.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Of the veteran quarterback having a place in the quarterback room,
- 2:21Speaker 6: no matter who the other one.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Two, or three are.
- 2:24Speaker 6: He he did keep four quarterbacks on the roster one
- 2:28Speaker 6: year in New Orleans.
- 2:29Speaker 3: That's a very rare thing, so.
- 2:30Speaker 6: He he does value the position. You know, Peterman has
- 2:34Speaker 6: had plenty of ups and downs in the league that
- 2:37Speaker 6: have been well documented, especially with interceptions. But I think
- 2:42Speaker 6: this is always sort of the mold. I think the
- 2:45Speaker 6: successful teams do you bring in a veteran guy for
- 2:48Speaker 6: the tryout and then a young guy, you know, Kurt
- 2:51Speaker 6: Warner's son, a player like that.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you would bring.
- 2:55Speaker 6: You bring in the variety, and if one or both
- 3:00Speaker 6: you know, have a shot at coming back, that's a
- 3:02Speaker 6: good thing. But they just need arms to get through
- 3:05Speaker 6: some of the the work this weekend, and then you know,
- 3:09Speaker 6: if one of them gets to stay through OTA's and
- 3:13Speaker 6: the rest of it, that's just a chance for them
- 3:15Speaker 6: to show what they can do.
- 3:16Speaker 5: I guess the underlying question might be, is this also
- 3:19Speaker 5: insurance in case Bow can't be where Bow needs to be?
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 6: I don't think this is any impact on beyond June
- 3:28Speaker 6: like that. I think the still the clock I'm hearing
- 3:31Speaker 6: is not much if anything. In June, you know, ready
- 3:37Speaker 6: to go in training camp? You know, does that mean
- 3:41Speaker 6: first day of training camp, third week of training camp.
- 3:43Speaker 6: We don't know the answer to that yet, but I
- 3:47Speaker 6: think that's always the case. They're gonna need arms to
- 3:51Speaker 6: throw when you're at you know, ninety players. You got
- 3:55Speaker 6: to have people to throw the ball. That's why you
- 3:57Speaker 6: always see a lot of receivers on UH off season rosters,
- 4:02Speaker 6: because that's a high, high volume running position, and you
- 4:06Speaker 6: always see one or two more quarterbacks than they probably need.
- 4:10Speaker 2: All conversations with Leggie or Rotchie about the International Brotherhood
- 4:13Speaker 2: of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight start with the
- 4:16Speaker 2: job and with the career. Leggy, is this, maybe, I
- 4:22Speaker 2: don't know, put this least newsworthy off season of the
- 4:25Speaker 2: Broncos in a long time. He had obviously the pop
- 4:28Speaker 2: from the Jalen Model trade, but with the lack of
- 4:30Speaker 2: first round pick and no real free agency moves to
- 4:33Speaker 2: speak of, can you remember one.
- 4:35Speaker 1: That was maybe this lacking in news for the team?
- 4:40Speaker 6: I guess I would always right, I would always say
- 4:43Speaker 6: that when we start talking about how exciting, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 6: a team was in the off season, it's usually inverse
- 4:52Speaker 6: proportion to how good they were.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Oh.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'm not saying it is a bad thing.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I don't.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm not saying like the Bos messed up, but yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but I'.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Saying this is the cycle. You know, when you're bad, you're.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Making big moves in the off season, when you're good.
- 5:07Speaker 6: You're just trying to hold it together and you know,
- 5:10Speaker 6: whatever fashion you can.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And I they did.
- 5:14Speaker 6: The surprising thing for me and I have not seen
- 5:16Speaker 6: it in my time cover in the league, is how
- 5:20Speaker 6: internal they were in their approach they I mean, when
- 5:24Speaker 6: you sign you know, the numbers are well documented, seventeen
- 5:28Speaker 6: of twenty one sort of you know players that all
- 5:32Speaker 6: the levels of free agency that they had, that's that's
- 5:37Speaker 6: almost unheard of. I mean, may they basically made two
- 5:42Speaker 6: moves Jalen Waddell and the safety Tyson that basically made
- 5:48Speaker 6: two moves that weren't players from their roster and other
- 5:51Speaker 6: than the draft picks.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But that is very very rare. But you know, again,
- 5:57Speaker 3: I think this is you have a head coach.
- 5:59Speaker 6: You thought this was a super Bowl team last year
- 6:02Speaker 6: and he's he has clearly shown, uh, they believe it.
- 6:07Speaker 6: It is that this year as well, because they kept
- 6:10Speaker 6: it intact.
- 6:12Speaker 4: You know, vict knows people it's always this time, but
- 6:16Speaker 4: he does know he does those lots of people it's
- 6:20Speaker 4: always this time of year. When Victor is huh, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 4: I got the Bronco schedule. I can't release it. I
- 6:24Speaker 4: can't tell you what's going on. But I got the
- 6:26Speaker 4: advanced copy. I'm like, okay, and then I go through
- 6:28Speaker 4: when it comes out and do my wins and losses.
- 6:31Speaker 4: When don't we get in it? Jeff, what's the schedule
- 6:33Speaker 4: coming out? When do I find out what the heck
- 6:34Speaker 4: is going on?
- 6:36Speaker 3: It depends who you ask.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Some people say next week, some people say the week
- 6:40Speaker 6: after so but uh, it'll be in the next two weeks.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Uh. By all accounts, do you do you book everything?
- 6:48Speaker 4: Like right when the schedule comes out? Do you book
- 6:50Speaker 4: the entire season?
- 6:52Speaker 2: We? Uh?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Uh?
- 6:53Speaker 6: You know, I am part of a large corporation, so
- 6:56Speaker 6: you you get green you get green lighted to book
- 7:00Speaker 6: you know, certain components of the season. They tell you when.
- 7:03Speaker 6: So I wait for the word and then I jump.
- 7:07Speaker 5: We are also part of a larger corporation and we
- 7:09Speaker 5: do the same thing. Hey, in regards to mini camps
- 7:14Speaker 5: and all this stuff. I see that the Broncos already
- 7:17Speaker 5: signed their rookie, tied End, the guy they drafted Bentley
- 7:21Speaker 5: how to Utah.
- 7:23Speaker 3: So yeah, tell me how this work.
- 7:25Speaker 1: So he's a seventh round sixth or seventh rounder seventh?
- 7:28Speaker 4: Okay, what if you can't play.
- 7:30Speaker 5: And you already agreed to sign him to a four
- 7:33Speaker 5: year deal. You just I mean, they got to be
- 7:35Speaker 5: some provisions in there. What you're rolling the dice here,
- 7:39Speaker 5: what if he shows up a camp and and I
- 7:41Speaker 5: mean this for all late round picks, what if they
- 7:43Speaker 5: can't play? You just eat that money.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Well, I mean that the guaranteed money is all you
- 7:50Speaker 6: would really be eating.
- 7:51Speaker 3: So the signing bonus essentially, which was.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Like one hundred and twenty seven thousand dollars for a
- 7:56Speaker 5: seventh rounder.
- 7:57Speaker 6: But okay, you know there are there are some minor
- 8:00Speaker 6: cap implications. That's why every year, if you had the
- 8:04Speaker 6: full list of dead money in front of you, every season,
- 8:08Speaker 6: you would see like thirty names of guys who had
- 8:12Speaker 6: been signed for training camp or to the practice squad
- 8:16Speaker 6: and had moved back and forth, but they had gotten
- 8:18Speaker 6: some amount of guaranteed money. There are some cap implications,
- 8:24Speaker 6: and some they do have provisions and NFL contracts about
- 8:28Speaker 6: how much you get paid if you're hurt or if
- 8:33Speaker 6: you have to go to the practice squad. You know,
- 8:35Speaker 6: there are provisions like that. So there are some guardrails
- 8:40Speaker 6: in there for the team, but it's really just the
- 8:42Speaker 6: guaranteed money, and it's yeah, it's just part of the
- 8:46Speaker 6: part of the equation.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Jeff, We're just talking about the story from Jake Trotter
- 8:50Speaker 2: that he said back in twenty twenty one, Matt Campbell,
- 8:52Speaker 2: who was then the head coach of Iowa State, agreed
- 8:55Speaker 2: to become the head coach of Detroit, but then changed
- 8:58Speaker 2: his mind and that led to.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Detroit getting Dan Campbell.
- 9:02Speaker 2: How often does this happen, because we know the famous
- 9:04Speaker 2: stories of like Josh McDaniels agreed to be the Colts
- 9:07Speaker 2: coach and then backed out last second went back to
- 9:09Speaker 2: the Patriots. Does this happen a lot where coaches initially
- 9:13Speaker 2: come to terms or agree verbally on something and then
- 9:16Speaker 2: back out.
- 9:17Speaker 3: You know, I don't know that you know that come
- 9:20Speaker 3: to terms part of it.
- 9:22Speaker 6: It happens a lot where the team or the coach
- 9:26Speaker 6: will think they've reached some kind of verbal agreement and
- 9:29Speaker 6: now the attorneys are just going to hammer out the paper,
- 9:33Speaker 6: you know, the contract, and something happens.
- 9:36Speaker 3: I think that happens.
- 9:38Speaker 6: I mean, the most famous story in my career for
- 9:40Speaker 6: me that I've heard is or the funniest is you know,
- 9:44Speaker 6: the late Dave McGinnis heard on he was at the
- 9:48Speaker 6: hotel after finishing his interview with the Chicago Bears and
- 9:52Speaker 6: heard on the radio he had been hired by the Bears,
- 9:57Speaker 6: and that was not the case he had So his
- 10:00Speaker 6: joke was always, I was coach of the Chicago Bears
- 10:03Speaker 6: for six hours. But yeah, he heard on the radio
- 10:09Speaker 6: at the hotel that he had been hired by the
- 10:11Speaker 6: Chicago Bears and he had not been They had even
- 10:16Speaker 6: prepared the press conference, that there were reporters waiting, and
- 10:20Speaker 6: the banners were up and all of it, and he
- 10:23Speaker 6: had not been hired by the Chicago Bears, and he
- 10:27Speaker 6: walked away from it and they had to go hire somebody.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Wait, wait, so the hang on he walked away from
- 10:35Speaker 2: it or the Bears did not agree to it.
- 10:38Speaker 3: No, he walked away. He went.
- 10:40Speaker 6: He hurt on the radio he had been hired by
- 10:42Speaker 6: the Chicago Bears. Went to the facility and is talking
- 10:47Speaker 6: to the mccaskeys and the people in charge, saying.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Hey, what's the deal. We have not agreed to a contract.
- 10:57Speaker 3: How's this going to look?
- 10:58Speaker 6: And he always told me his feeling was he didn't
- 11:02Speaker 6: like the answers he got in that day.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And he walked away.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Wow from that, And that's that's the all timer to
- 11:11Speaker 6: me to hear on the radio you have been hired
- 11:15Speaker 6: and you have it.
- 11:16Speaker 3: That's that's the all timer.
- 11:17Speaker 4: That's great, That's that's pretty crazy. Hey, Jeff. As we
- 11:20Speaker 4: sit here now the beginning of May, we'll get through
- 11:23Speaker 4: the mini camps holes. Can the Broncos bring in any
- 11:26Speaker 4: more players before training camp is or what are the
- 11:29Speaker 4: odds of that. I'm sure they'll pick some guys off
- 11:32Speaker 4: the scrap heap once cut start network, once the cuts
- 11:34Speaker 4: happened or whatever. But where are we right now in
- 11:37Speaker 4: terms of bringing in more guys that Peyton may like
- 11:41Speaker 4: or whatever the case may be.
- 11:43Speaker 6: They can bring in guys, motion man, they can have
- 11:45Speaker 6: tryout guys at these events. Often you'll see a few
- 11:51Speaker 6: players released, like they have the rookie mini campus weekend.
- 11:55Speaker 6: Often you'll see, you know, three or four players are
- 11:58Speaker 6: released after that and replaced by others that you know,
- 12:02Speaker 6: they just can't pass the roster limit at this point.
- 12:05Speaker 6: But within that number of roster slots they can still
- 12:09Speaker 6: do whatever they want.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I know, there's just some guys still kicking around that,
- 12:13Speaker 4: you know, haven't agreed with any teams or that kind
- 12:15Speaker 4: of thing, And I'm just I'm just curious.
- 12:17Speaker 6: Well, a lot of veteran guys at this point are
- 12:20Speaker 6: in the mode of unless it's a perfect situation, I'm
- 12:23Speaker 6: not real excited about going through OTAs in mini camps,
- 12:26Speaker 6: so they they kind of waited out to the older guys.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Is that Aaron Rodgers territory right now?
- 12:32Speaker 3: Oh?
- 12:33Speaker 6: I think the Steelers are Look, you know, I preface
- 12:37Speaker 6: this by saying I don't cover the Steelers anymore and
- 12:41Speaker 6: all I'm not as in tune as the people who
- 12:44Speaker 6: do that every day, but I know the organization and
- 12:49Speaker 6: there's no way they're happy about how long this has taken.
- 12:53Speaker 6: I think their understanding was they would have an answer
- 12:58Speaker 6: by now, and I think they certainly want one before
- 13:01Speaker 6: the end of the month.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Do you get as an employee of ESPN? Do you
- 13:05Speaker 5: get free ESPN Plus?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Uh? Yes? Can I get them codes?
- 13:12Speaker 3: Well, you know it depends. Maybe we can work to.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Give you some Altitude plus for some Let me let
- 13:18Speaker 4: me tell you something, man, there was time I want,
- 13:20Speaker 4: I want, I want a long time with other guys
- 13:22Speaker 4: on my cable, and I'm still a little bitter about it. Yeah, Jeff,
- 13:26Speaker 4: I would get like an alert your account has been
- 13:29Speaker 4: access from Golden Colorado, and I'm like, what, dude had
- 13:33Speaker 4: my code for like.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Two and a half years and just had them codes.
- 13:37Speaker 4: He's got his logging logging in like the worst.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Leggy, tell tell me if you've done this, because you
- 13:47Speaker 5: have kids that use goes. I've been double pain on
- 13:50Speaker 5: some CODs without any knowledge for the last Yes.
- 13:55Speaker 6: You gotta have a you gotta have a review of
- 13:57Speaker 6: the finances occasionally.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Yeah, we gotta have a breaked out hate that.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwell ESPN dot com joins us every single week.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Thank you, leg you appreciate it.
