  Neither does the team. So I'm guessing that that took

  some creative, creative answers. What did you what did you hear

  this morning, John? I, I just think they're ready to

  play. I mean, I, I, I think, I don't

  think when you get to this point in, in, you know, where you've

  been through camp and all that, I think you just want to see

  something different. And I, and I think that's the

  way they're looking at this one is, is, I mean, again, there's a

  lot of there's a lot of new moving pieces in this, in this
• 1:40
  depth chart, as we saw yesterday.

  And then I just kind of want to see where everybody fits.

  And I mean, and I listened a lot to Mark Gronowski today and then

  he really is just ready to play and you can tell that.

  And so I think they want to see somebody new and they they know
• 1:56
  that it's Albany, it's an FCS team and you know, and it is

  what it is, but it's a game. And that's what I think they're
• 2:04
  working at it as so. We know that this running
• 2:07
  backroom is deep. There's maybe no Caleb Johnson
• 2:10
  in there, but have to be excited about the depth that they
• 2:12
  created. But at the top, well, the guy
• 2:14
  that we were talking about a year ago at this time was all
• 2:16
  Kumari Moulton all the time. And then Caleb Johnson came to
• 2:19
  the forefront. He was out there, sounds like
• 2:21
  he's healthy, ready to go. What you hear from Bolton and
• 2:24
  kind of your expectation as a whole, not just Bolton, but this
• 2:26
  running backroom in 2025? You know, I, I, I think it is
• 2:30
  going to be a lot like last year, but, and I think
• 2:32
  eventually by week 3, somebody steps up, I think there will be
• 2:37
  that #1 running back. But he's got a lot of options
• 2:41
  there. And I mean, there's a lot of,
• 2:43
  and it was something they talked about back in media day that,
• 2:46
  you know, all those guys can do something for them out of the
• 2:49
  backfield. And you've got a young, you
• 2:52
  know, a couple of young guys that we haven't seen a lot of.

  You've got some other guys we do know a little bit about.

  So I mean, again, I think you're going to steal all of them on
• 3:01
  Saturday. And I think then by the time we
• 3:05
  get to Big 10, I think there is going to be one that that kind
• 3:08
  of steps up just kind of like last year maybe.

  I mean, clearly not the production, I don't think, but
• 3:14
  somebody's going to step up and then take that job.

  I agree with you. It's going to be fascinating to

  see who that's going to be. Do you have an opinion?

  I mean, if you had to, you know, go on record as to, you know,
• 3:25
  name your guy. Do you, do you lean either way?

  Does you think Moulton is? This is his year.

  I think this is his year, but I, you know, I've always been a

  Jazz Patterson fan. I always have liked it.

  And and I know that that they have been really high on Terrell
• 3:39
  Washington too. So I mean, again, there's,
• 3:42
  there's a lot of options there. It's just kind of who, you know,
• 3:46
  that's why I think these these first couple of games.

  And then, and I mean, obviously next week, you're you're going
• 3:51
  to kind of see a different offense.

  But these, this this game in two weeks from now are going to be
• 3:55
  really kind of how that room shakes out.

  And then I think that's what we're going to see.

  Let's go to the other skill position, then the wide receiver

  room. And maybe the biggest surprise

  of that depth chart was at the top and he talked about two guys
• 4:08
  listed at the same position, but couldn't be more different.

  5764. You got speedy guy Sam Phillips,
• 4:14
  who comes in from Chattanooga. You got the Iowa kid from
• 4:17
  northwest Iowa at six foot three.

  I think a little bit of an upset there.

  What can you tell us about Sam Phillips?
• 4:24
  I don't know a whole lot. I mean, I mean, like you said, I
• 4:26
  I mean obviously comes from a really good program, an
• 4:30
  experienced player, which I mean, again, this room, you
• 4:33
  know, when you think back to just a couple years ago, you had
• 4:36
  a lot of freshmen back there. And I and I think when when he
• 4:40
  came here, it was the idea of this is the guy that's cut a lot
• 4:42
  of passes. This is the guy that that's done
• 4:45
  a lot of really good things at the FCS level.
• 4:48
  Apparently now he has he has earned that job in training in
• 4:52
  camp. And so I again, again, I and
• 4:55
  I've talked about this too with other people about this room.
• 4:58
  This is just so much of A better room now than what it was, you
• 5:02
  know, a year ago, two years ago, so much experience there.
• 5:05
  Again, a lot of different options.
• 5:06
  And it was something that Tim Luster talked about back at
• 5:09
  media Day is that that you've got guys, but you can put them
• 5:12
  in different spots. And so I think he's he's really
• 5:16
  happy with that group. I mean, clearly, I mean, I
• 5:18
  thought Reese Vanders is good was going to be the.
• 5:21
  Guy you know. I just thought, I just thought,
• 5:23
  you know, the way he he kind of started last year and, you know,
• 5:27
  in the way everybody had talked about him in the spring and all
• 5:30
  that you thought that he was going to be.
• 5:32
  But clearly, you know, again, Sam Phills, I mean, obviously,
• 5:36
  you know, with the numbers he put up in his, you know, at
• 5:39
  Chattanooga, now he comes in here and obviously he's done
• 5:42
  something really well that that has impressed them.
• 5:45
  When when Kirk Ferren sat down with Revson and company in Las
• 5:49
  Vegas, he went out of his way to he wasn't asked about reuse
• 5:52
  Vanderzee, but he found a way to bring him into the conversation.
• 5:55
  So John, that's was shocking to me as well because as you said
• 5:59
  back in the spring, it was all Vanderzee, Vanderzee, Vanderzee
• 6:02
  even, you know, heading into the fall camp.
• 6:04
  So I'm anxious to see this Sam Phillips and and what he did and
• 6:07
  you know, obviously must be able to play a little bit because I,
• 6:10
  like you, thought it was a foregone conclusion.

  I want to ask you about Gronowski.
• 6:13
  The fact that you know, he comes from that FCS level and
• 6:17
  everybody's kind of poo poo in this game.
• 6:19
  It's Albany, and admittedly they're a bad team pick, 12th in
• 6:22
  their fourteen team conference. But I wonder if that Gronowski,
• 6:26
  not that he wouldn't take it seriously, just first start as a
• 6:28
  hot guy, but the fact that he was an FCS player, maybe there's
• 6:32
  something to that. I don't know.
• 6:35
  Somebody asked him about that today because I mean, I mean,
• 6:37
  he's played against Albany before and, you know, and and
• 6:41
  you know, he said, you know, he understands the level of
• 6:44
  football. He understands what FDS football
• 6:47
  is. And he said, I'm not taking them
• 6:49
  lightly at all. You know, they we, you know,
• 6:52
  it's it's you know, I think from listening to him today, I think
• 6:55
  he's just excited about getting a chance to get that first game
• 7:00
  in as an Iowa quarterback. And it's kind of funny to say it
• 7:03
  that way. But when you consider his resume
• 7:06
  and all he did at South Coast State, but he's looking at this
• 7:10
  little difference like, OK, this is now big time.
• 7:12
  This is this is, you know, this is a powerful conference team.
• 7:16
  This is a big, big 10 team. I want to go out there and play
• 7:19
  well. And you can tell he's ready to
• 7:21
  go and he obviously feels good. Yeah.

  You know, and I mean, and he I think he kind of shook some of
• 7:28
  the rust off, you know, that from not, you know, being going
• 7:31
  through spring practice and all that.

  So I I think he's really ready to play.

  And then again, I have when they got him, when he went into the
• 7:39
  portal, I said they should get him.
• 7:41
  I have really liked this guy from the beginning.
• 7:43
  And I mean, because you know me, I'm an CS guy.

  So I'm really, I'm really excited about I, I want to see
• 7:50
  how he does at this level and, and, and, and what he can do for
• 7:55
  this team. So over to the defensive line,
• 7:57
  and I know the question is going to pop up right away.

  And you know, knowing the opponent on Saturday, maybe
• 8:02
  you'll see Yose up, Anessa get a sack, and it's going to start up
• 8:05
  just like it did with AJ, what, 6-7 years ago?

  Why isn't he playing more? Why are these veterans in front
• 8:10
  of him? Have you heard much about Yosei
• 8:12
  in camp? It sounds like he is as
• 8:15
  anticipated. But another thing this defensive
• 8:18
  line feels, at least on paper, a lot deeper than when AJ showed
• 8:21
  up as a freshman. Oh, yeah.
• 8:23
  And I mean, you look at, you know, I've got the depth chart
• 8:25
  here in front of me and you look at senior, junior, graduate,
• 8:28
  junior, sophomore, I mean, these are all experienced guy.
• 8:32
  And so, you know, if he does, if he plays well enough in camp,
• 8:37
  he's going to be on the field. So Parker isn't isn't afraid to
• 8:40
  use somebody like that. But this defensive line group is
• 8:43
  probably a little bit better than what maybe we thought they
• 8:47
  were going to be in the spring. And but we would, because I
• 8:50
  think when you look at this, the experience they've got, I, I
• 8:54
  just think it it, they're going to do the same sort of deal into
• 8:57
  rotating guys in and out. Does he get into that rotation?

  Probably and maybe not right away, but, but maybe we do see
• 9:04
  him on Saturday. Maybe we see him in a couple
• 9:06
  weeks in 2 minutes. You're going to see him at some
• 9:09
  point because I know they have been really high on what he can
• 9:12
  do. Offensive line set with the
• 9:15
  exceptional left tackle. Is that kind of where we're at?
• 9:18
  Yeah, and I mean, I and and Gronowski was asked about that
• 9:22
  today and he didn't seem to have, you know, like a favorite
• 9:25
  among the two. You know, he talked up both of
• 9:27
  them. So I think you're going to see
• 9:29
  both of them on Saturday. Again, that's a position works
• 9:32
  itself out here eventually. But I again, I, you know, it's
• 9:37
  just a question of who kind of steps up here in the next couple
• 9:41
  weeks. And I guess because I think you
• 9:42
  see both of them. Do you think it's an advantage

  for the way the schedule sets up here?

  Albany, you know, they've taken on good FCS teams now I guess
• 9:49
  North Dakota State, it didn't go very well and they escaped
• 9:52
  against South Dakota State, this Albany team and though they were
• 9:55
  a semi finalist 2 years ago, it looks like this program is a lot
• 9:58
  different. If if you could, Jared.

  Verse was on that team, yes. Jared Verse was on that Albany
• 10:02
  team that helped lead them to the semi finals and then they
• 10:05
  got trounced by Mark Gronowski and South Dakota State in those
• 10:08
  semi finals. If you gave true serum to Kirk

  and he said you could have an FCS opponent, but one maybe a
• 10:15
  little bit better than Albany, you think he'd take it.

  Or because of the question marks, maybe he's happy having
• 10:20
  kind of this tomato can in front of him.

  I think in other years he would have probably liked the tougher
• 10:25
  game, but I'm I'm like you said, there's, there's there's so many

  positions that you still you have options, but you want to

  see what those options are. And that's what this, I mean,

  this game is going to feel an awful lot like an NFL preseason
• 10:39
  game, but you you're going to get you want to get guys in
• 10:42
  there. You want to do something just to
• 10:44
  get ready for what you got next week.

  And so I think I don't think he really cares right now.

  I mean, again, if this was if this was a really, really, you

  know, if you had, if you had, this was a very established Iowa

  team. Yeah, maybe he wants maybe a

  little bit of a better challenge.

  But I think right now it's just let's get him on the field.

  Let's see what these guys can do and and let's build toward Week

  2. When you listen to Phil Parker

  over the years, as you have John and where I'm going is is his
• 11:10
  linebacker position. And you mentioned earlier all
• 11:13
  the the experience, a grad, grad, senior in those three
• 11:16
  spots and then Cash Loopman win the job, right?
• 11:19
  I think he did, yeah. And he's an underclassman, but
• 11:22
  experienced being there. Do do you think Parker is
• 11:26
  confident? Is he, is he in the back of his
• 11:28
  mind wondering how this is going to work out?
• 11:31
  I mean, they've had some great players over the last, you know,
• 11:33
  1/2 decade at that, longer than that at that position.

  And they've been able to plug and play.

  Is this another example of plug and play once they, you know,
• 11:42
  the incumbent has moved on? Or is there still some questions
• 11:45
  in your mind? I don't think there's really, I

  don't think he has that many questions in his mind.

  I mean, my, my thing is like, you know, in looking at the

  depth chart, I mean, yeah, there's there's guys there that

  now have have earned their opportunity.

  You've got some guys behind them, some really young guys

  that red shirted last year that now all of a sudden may start
• 12:06
  pushing them for playing time. And I think he knows, hey, if,

  if, if, if what we've got out there now doesn't work.

  We've got these young guys, they're ready to go.

  But at the same time, I think he knows that this is just a really
• 12:18
  these guys have earned their opportunity and, and he's going
• 12:22
  to, he's going to roll with them.

  And from what everybody has said about them and what from what

  we've seen of them, they're pretty, I mean, this is a pretty
• 12:30
  good group. They just haven't had a chance
• 12:31
  to play. Now they're getting a chance to
