- 0:26Speaker 1: is here in New Orleans and the New Orleans Saints
- 0:29Speaker 1: could not avoid the new cycle here as as the
- 0:34Speaker 1: week begins, and Adam Schefter was a guest earlier today
- 0:38Speaker 1: on the Pat McAfee show. And with one head coaching
- 0:41Speaker 1: vacancy remaining, that, of course, being the New Orleans Saints vacancy,
- 0:44Speaker 1: all eyes and attention are pointing toward Kellen Moore and
- 0:48Speaker 1: Adam Schefter today broke the news that I and many
- 0:51Speaker 1: other thought we'd probably hear late last week, but I
- 0:54Speaker 1: guess better late than never.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Here was Schefter's report.
- 0:56Speaker 3: The head of the Saints organization, Mickey Lomis, is going
- 0:59Speaker 3: to do everything in his power when it comes to
- 1:02Speaker 3: this coaching hire to follow the rules and go buy
- 1:05Speaker 3: the book and not talk to Kellen Moore until after
- 1:08Speaker 3: the Super Bowl?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Could it break down and they not reach an agreement?
- 1:11Speaker 3: Sure? Is that likely? No, Kellen Moore is gonna have
- 1:14Speaker 3: a chance to probably triple his salary become a head
- 1:17Speaker 3: coach one to thirty two. And if the Saints were
- 1:19Speaker 3: making any other move, whether it was hiring the Dolphins
- 1:22Speaker 3: defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver or the Giants offensive coordinator Mike
- 1:26Speaker 3: Kafka or their own interim head coach, what are they
- 1:28Speaker 3: waiting for? Why not go hire them right now? But
- 1:31Speaker 3: they're not. They're waiting. Barring a setback, he's going to
- 1:34Speaker 3: be the guy.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So there's the report from Schefter. Barring a setback, he's
- 1:42Speaker 1: going to be the guy. Whi's fine that in saying
- 1:48Speaker 1: you're gonna do everything by the books so you avoid
- 1:51Speaker 1: tampering and totally understand that.
- 1:53Speaker 2: It's all things we talked about.
- 1:56Speaker 1: That's not the report that we got from Schefter and
- 1:59Speaker 1: other late last week. The report late last week Tom
- 2:03Speaker 1: Pellasero among them, was that Diana Rossini, who's here, by
- 2:08Speaker 1: the way, was that the Saints had not made a decision.
- 2:13Speaker 1: They had not informed any of the candidates they were
- 2:15Speaker 1: out of the running and that they wanted to talk
- 2:18Speaker 1: to more again after the Super Bowl. So it's to
- 2:21Speaker 1: say that they weren't done with the interview process. So
- 2:24Speaker 1: that's a very different that's a very different report than
- 2:30Speaker 1: what Schefter said today, which is the thing I thought
- 2:32Speaker 1: we would hear late last week because it's what happened
- 2:34Speaker 1: last year with Clint Kubiak. So now the attention turns
- 2:37Speaker 1: to Kellen Moore fully and I think we all understand
- 2:40Speaker 1: that now. And Schefter was also asked what types of
- 2:44Speaker 1: setbacks could possibly occur at this point.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Here's what he said.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Could there be a setback or there been our setbacks?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Bill Belichick didn't wind up becoming the head coach of
- 2:55Speaker 3: the Jets, Josh McDaniels didn't wind up becoming the head
- 2:58Speaker 3: coach of the coach didn't wind up becoming the coordinator Buccaneers.
- 3:03Speaker 3: But barring new setbacks, we know where this is tracking,
- 3:07Speaker 3: and we know where this is going. Let's not be
- 3:09Speaker 3: oblivious to it.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I so the question becomes, how do we feel about
- 3:17Speaker 1: Kellen Moore and whether this is right or wrong. I
- 3:20Speaker 1: do think the result of the game on Sunday is
- 3:25Speaker 1: going to be very indicative of what the fan reaction
- 3:29Speaker 1: is going to be. For example, I don't know that
- 3:33Speaker 1: Kellen Moore would have been a very popular name. May
- 3:36Speaker 1: still not be, but I know that he was going
- 3:38Speaker 1: to be a very popular name before the NFC Championship game.
- 3:41Speaker 1: The Eagles go put fifty five on the board in
- 3:44Speaker 1: the NFC Championship Game. A day later, Kellen Moore emerges
- 3:48Speaker 1: as really that night, emerges as a guy the Saints
- 3:51Speaker 1: want to talk to. They fly up and talk to
- 3:53Speaker 1: him on Monday night into Tuesday morning. He's the front
- 3:55Speaker 1: runner now, and I think people got pretty excited. If
- 3:57Speaker 1: the Eagles go out on Sunday against the Chief and
- 4:00Speaker 1: when the Super Bowl and that offense really cooks and hums,
- 4:04Speaker 1: then I think we look up and we're probably a
- 4:06Speaker 1: little more excited about Kellen Moore than we would have
- 4:08Speaker 1: been let's say ten to fourteen days ago. But the
- 4:16Speaker 1: point I'll make about Kellen Moore will continue to be
- 4:19Speaker 1: While I don't think he was the A list number
- 4:22Speaker 1: one guy, Clearly Aaron Glenn was your number one. Joe
- 4:25Speaker 1: Brady was right there as well, and you interviewed other candidates.
- 4:31Speaker 1: The thing I wanted to think a lot of people
- 4:32Speaker 1: wanted was a young, offensive minded coach. This checks that box.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Someone without ties to the organization prior. This checks that box.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Provided it does head that way and they get this
- 4:42Speaker 1: across the finish line, and regardless, you still have to
- 4:47Speaker 1: hire someone.
- 4:49Speaker 2: So like you're going to hire a coach.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It is interesting that Blake Groupy was sitting with us
- 4:55Speaker 1: ten minutes ago and said he would love for Darren
- 4:57Speaker 1: Rizzy to be the guy. And I think that's a
- 4:59Speaker 1: sentiment that will a lot of Saints players share. But
- 5:01Speaker 1: I also don't think you always a default to what
- 5:04Speaker 1: the players want to hire the popular candidate among the players.
- 5:08Speaker 1: That often goes awry. There's part of me that looks
- 5:12Speaker 1: at Darren Rizzy and says, could he be the culture
- 5:15Speaker 1: builder in New Orleans the way Dan Campbell has been
- 5:18Speaker 1: in Detroit? And I think there's some legitimacy to that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But I also look at any one who's making that higher,
- 5:31Speaker 1: and you're trying to minimize risk in that higher, and
- 5:35Speaker 1: I don't know that I could definitively say that there's
- 5:38Speaker 1: more risk with Darren Rizzy or Kellen Moore. Probably less
- 5:41Speaker 1: with Darren Rizzy quite honestly, because you have an eight
- 5:44Speaker 1: game sample size of him as a head coach to
- 5:45Speaker 1: know what that looks like.
- 5:47Speaker 2: But we may.
- 5:50Speaker 1: We may not get that answer, but it sounds like
- 5:52Speaker 1: According to Schefter, the report many of us say anticipated
- 5:55Speaker 1: hearing late last week, is Kellen Moore will in fact
- 5:58Speaker 1: be the guy after barring a snag after the Super
- 6:00Speaker 1: Bowl
