- 0:00Take your Bible, if you would please, and turn to 1st
- 0:03Thessalonians chapter 5. And we're going to continue our
- 0:05study on the model life. And as you're turning there, I
- 0:08want to remind you of the apostle Paul and the great
- 0:11concern of his life. In Second Corinthians Chapter
- 0:1611, Paul lists a litany of issues that he himself went
- 0:22through personally. He talks about he went through
- 0:26imprisonments. He was beaten times without
- 0:28number. He was in danger of death, he
- 0:31says five times he received from the Jews 39 lashes, 3 times he
- 0:36was beaten with rods, once he was stoned, three times he was
- 0:40shipwrecked. Night and day he had spent in
- 0:43the deep. He had frequent journeys with
- 0:46dangers, dangers from robbers and countrymen, the wilderness,
- 0:50the sea, and even false brethren.
- 0:53He says. I have been in labor and
- 0:54hardship through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst,
- 0:57often without food, in cold and exposure.
- 1:01I mean, Paul begins to list all these different aspects that
- 1:04happened to him externally, but what happened in him internally
- 1:13was more of a burden, for he says these words in verse 28 of
- 1:172nd Corinthians 11. Apart from such external things,
- 1:22there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the
- 1:26churches. Who is weak without my being
- 1:29weak? Who is LED into sin without my
- 1:34intense concern? He says what bothers me most is
- 1:41not what happens to me externally, but what is
- 1:46happening in me internally because of the burden I carry
- 1:51for the churches. And so Paul had had two main
- 1:57emphasis in his ministry. And you can read the 13 epistles
- 2:03that he himself wrote, and you'll see this theme over and
- 2:07over again. And the theme deals primarily
- 2:12with making sure the church hears and heeds the instruction
- 2:21of God. That was his number one concern.
- 2:24Do they hear God's word? And do they obey God's word?
- 2:30That's why he he told Timothy over in first Timothy chapter 4
- 2:34and verse number six. Point these things out to the
- 2:38brethren. Verse 11 prescribe and teach
- 2:41these things verse 13 until I come, give attention to the
- 2:45public reading of Scripture to exhortation to teaching.
- 2:49Verse 16, pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching.
- 2:54And then second Timothy, he talks about retaining the
- 2:57standard, guarding the standard, preach the word in season and
- 3:02out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering
- 3:06and patience. Why?
- 3:08Because he says earlier in Second Timothy chapter 3 that
- 3:10God's word is profitable. So the man of God will be
- 3:13thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 3:16So, Timothy, make sure as a pastor you teach the Word, you
- 3:19preach the Word, you exhort the people to follow the Word of the
- 3:23living God. And so that's what his ministry
- 3:26was about, making sure that the churches would hear and heed the
- 3:34instruction of God. But on the heels of that was his
- 3:39second emphasis, and that was that the church would hurriedly
- 3:46handle the transgressions of man, that the church would hurry
- 3:58and handle the transgressions of man.
- 4:06In other words, once you hear what God's Word says and you
- 4:10understand the holy standard, then you need to make sure that
- 4:13you deal with those who don't meet the holy standard.
- 4:18That was His complete and total emphasis for every single
- 4:23church. Let me show you by way of
- 4:25example, member First Corinthians chapter 5.
- 4:28There was a man who was living in sin, and Paul says these
- 4:34words in verse number three of First Corinthians 5.
- 4:39For I on my part, though absent in body, but President Spirit,
- 4:42have already judged him and has so committed this as though I
- 4:45were present in the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are
- 4:49assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our
- 4:53Lord Jesus, I had decided to deliver such a one to Satan for
- 4:58the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in
- 5:02the day of the Lord Jesus. He says you're boasting is not
- 5:05good. Do you not know that a little
- 5:07leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?
- 5:10Clean out the old leaven, say you may be a new lump, just as
- 5:15you are in fact unleavened for Christ.
- 5:17Our Passover also has been sacrificed.
- 5:23He was concerned about the Corinthian church, that there
- 5:26was a man in the church who was who was sleeping with with his
- 5:30mother. And these things are unheard of
- 5:33even among the the pagans. And yet you're, you're boasting
- 5:37about this is not good you, you've got to deal with this guy
- 5:40because 1 little leaven leavens the whole lump.
- 5:43I've given you the word of God. I've instructed you in the ways
- 5:46of God. You have heard what I've said.
- 5:48Now you need to handle those who transgress the law of God.
- 5:53And then over again in in Second Corinthians, as he concludes it
- 5:56in chapter 12, he says this in verse 20, he says, For I am
- 6:00afraid that perhaps when I come, I may find you to be not what I
- 6:05wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish, that
- 6:09perhaps there will be strife, jealousy, angry tempers,
- 6:15disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances.
- 6:23I'm afraid that when I come again, my God may humiliate me
- 6:27before you. And I'm a mourn over many of
- 6:31those who have sinned in the past and not repented of the
- 6:35impurity, immorality and sensuality which they have
- 6:38practiced for chapter 13, verse #1 This is the third time I am
- 6:43coming to you. Every fact is to be confirmed by
- 6:47the testimony of two or three witnesses.
- 6:49I have previously said when present the second time and
- 6:52though now absent, I say in advance to those who have sinned
- 6:57in the past and to all the rest as well, that if I come again I
- 7:02will not spare anyone. Paul was concerned that you just
- 7:09can't let people in the church live and sin without dealing
- 7:13with those people. He says you've heard and you
- 7:17have obeyed the instruction of God.
- 7:20Now you need to handle those who transgress the instruction of
- 7:25the Word of God. That was Paul's emphasis all
- 7:29throughout his ministry because his concern was the purity and
- 7:35the holiness of the church. And he knew that in order for
- 7:41the church to grow, it can only grow if it was like the Christ.
- 7:49And so that was his burden. And so even when you come to the
- 7:53book of Thessalonians, and even when we examine this book and
- 7:57realize that this is a model church, this is Paul's
- 8:01quintessential church, this is the greatest of all the
- 8:05churches, he still has to deal with people who are living in
- 8:13sin because the model church wasn't a perfect church.
- 8:19The model church wasn't filled with people that were sinless.
- 8:24No, it was filled with people that were sinners because that's
- 8:27what the church is. It's a gathering together of, of
- 8:29sinful people who have been saved by the, the miraculous
- 8:32work of the living God. And, and so much so that the
- 8:37love you have for the brethren, the deep love and concern you
- 8:41have for the brethren is that you will want them to walk with
- 8:44the Lord and serve the Lord. The church is is not about the
- 8:48programs that has and the opportunities that affords you.
- 8:52It's about the opportunity you have to deal with people in the
- 8:56church. Coming to church and sitting
- 8:58there and, and looking at the back of the head of somebody in
- 9:00front of you and singing a few songs and hearing the sermon and
- 9:03giving a 20 spot in the offering basket is not what church is all
- 9:06about. Church is about dealing with one
- 9:10another in the way that God wants you to deal with one
- 9:12another. So what does Paul do?
- 9:16Paul says, look, I'm going to show you how you do this.
- 9:19I'm going to explain to you that you need to make sure that you
- 9:23deal with the people in your church, that you're able to
- 9:27adapt in each situation with each person in a way that brings
- 9:30glory and honor of God. Because this is the model life.
- 9:33Last week we talked about how you adapt to those who are in
- 9:36leadership, how you appreciate those because of their person,
- 9:41how you affirm those because of their position so that you may
- 9:44preserve the peace within the church.
- 9:47But then when you come to verses 14 and 15 of chapter 5, he moves
- 9:53from the leadership to the membership so they can learn to
- 9:57be sweet fellowship within the assembly.
- 10:01It's very simple. Look and listen to what he says.
- 10:07Verse 14. We urge you, brethren, stop
- 10:12right there. We urge you.
- 10:15We beg you. We intensely plead with you.
- 10:21This is important. He's talking to the brethren
- 10:24earlier in verse 12, he said, but we request of you, brethren.
- 10:28Now he says that we urge you brethren, we, we are, we, we, we
- 10:32want to, we want to move you to maturity.
- 10:34We, we, we want to propel you. We, we want you to see the
- 10:38intensity of this. We want you to see the magnitude
- 10:41of this. We want you to see how important
- 10:42this is. We, we urge you brethren, to do
- 10:485 things. Just five.
- 10:52Admonish the unruly, encourage the faint hearted, help the
- 11:03weak, be patient with everyone. And then he says, see that no
- 11:11one. We praise another with evil for
- 11:14evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another
- 11:19and for all people. That's it, that's it.
- 11:26He is concerned about the membership and how they function
- 11:32with one another. So he says this.
- 11:35I want you to admonish the unruly.
- 11:41I want you to warn those who are disobedient or those who are
- 11:48delinquent in their responsibility.
- 11:50The word unruly is a military term, so it deals with soldiers
- 11:56who have gone AWOL or soldiers who are who are not living up to
- 12:00their required position as a, a soldier.
- 12:05And they decided to, to rebel against the authority.
- 12:08They decided to turn away from their responsibility.
- 12:11They, they, they just become lazy in their responsibility.
- 12:15It's like Paul said in in Second Timothy 2 verse #4 that no good
- 12:20soldier involves himself in the affairs or entangles himself in
- 12:25the affairs of this world so that he may please his
- 12:28commanding officer. He doesn't get involved in the
- 12:32the affairs of this this world because he's so in tune to
- 12:36pleasing his commanding officer. So Paul says, I want you to warn
- 12:42those who are unruly, those who are disobedient, and those who
- 12:48are derelict in their responsibility.
- 12:53Now imagine this. What if we as a church really
- 12:57engaged in this? This is what Paul's I'm urging
- 13:00you to do this. This is what you got to do.
- 13:03I'm not there, but you are. So you got to make sure He's not
- 13:07telling the leadership to do this, although the leadership is
- 13:10required to do it. He's telling the membership to
- 13:13do this. He's telling, talking to the
- 13:15brethren, I want you to do this. There's a certain warning that
- 13:21takes place. There are consequences for
- 13:24disobedience. There are consequences for being
- 13:27derelict and responsibility. And so admonish them, go after
- 13:31them. Look what Paul says in in Second
- 13:35Thessalonians. He says this in chapter 3, verse
- 13:416. Now we command you brethren, in
- 13:43the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from
- 13:48every brother who leads an unruly life, and not according
- 13:53to the tradition which you receive from us.
- 13:56So now he is writing his 2nd letter.
- 13:59He said, look, have you admonished the unruly?
- 14:02If you've admonished the unruly, now I want you to stay away from
- 14:05them. Why?
- 14:08Because they're not living in line with what the Bible says.
- 14:13Warn them. Listen to what it says.
- 14:15He goes on for for years. For you yourselves know how you
- 14:21ought to follow our example because we did not act in an
- 14:24undisciplined manner among you. In other words, the unruly could
- 14:27be translated undisciplined, he says.
- 14:31Nor did we eat anyone's bread without pay for it, but the but
- 14:35with labor and hardship. We kept working night and day so
- 14:37that we would not be a burden to any of you, not because we did
- 14:40not have the right to do this, but in order to offer ourselves
- 14:43as a model for you, so that you would follow our example.
- 14:46For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order.
- 14:51If anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat
- 14:55either. For we hear that some among you
- 14:58are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but
- 15:06acting like busy bodies. Now such persons we command and
- 15:11exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat
- 15:16their own bread. But As for you, brethren, do not
- 15:20grow weary in doing good. So Paul is following up his
- 15:26first letter with the second letter saying, look, have you
- 15:30admonished the unruly If they are undisciplined, if they are
- 15:34derelict in their responsibilities, unwilling to
- 15:36follow what God's Word says, can't associate with them.
- 15:41Why? Because they're going to lead
- 15:44you astray as well. Seems a little harsh, doesn't it
- 15:51seems a little out there. Wait a minute.
- 15:54We're, we're the brethren, we're to love one another.
- 15:58We care for what we are. But but the greatest care you
- 16:02have is when someone's in sin or someone is not fulfilling their
- 16:06responsibility, you go to them and say, I, I want to admonish
- 16:10you. I mean, this is what you got to
- 16:12do. I I love you not to come to you.
- 16:14Listen, if it's your wife and she's living in sin, do you just
- 16:18let her live in sin? Yeah, go ahead, honey, It's OK.
- 16:22Don't worry about it. No big deal.
- 16:24It's going to crush our marriage.
- 16:25But who cares? No, no, no.
- 16:27You go out there and say, honey, you can't do that.
- 16:29Or if you're the wife, you say your husband live in the city.
- 16:31You say, honey, honey, we can't do this.
- 16:33You, you got to turn from your sin.
- 16:35This is not going to work. Or if it's your kids right, you
- 16:38go to your kids, say you're going the wrong direction.
- 16:40You can't do this. This is wrong.
- 16:43Let me, let me, let me move you in the right direction that
- 16:45that's what you do with your kids.
- 16:48Well, the church is a family. That's how we operate.
- 16:51That's how we function. We function in a way that that
- 16:55we are concerned enough. We love you enough to go to you.
- 16:58Listen, if you don't love them enough, just let them live in
- 17:00sin. Just let them live in sin.
- 17:03But when you love somebody, you are concerned about the purity
- 17:09of their lives, you're concerned about their spiritual walk with
- 17:12the Lord. You're concerned that they're
- 17:15not derelict in their responsibility, but they
- 17:18actually fulfill the responsibility.
- 17:21I have in my pocket a church covenant cart that when you
- 17:29became a member, you agreed to. I'm not sure you all remember
- 17:34this, but it's very important. It's all biblically based, he
- 17:41says. I, I covenant to preserve the
- 17:44unity of my church. I, I promise to preserve the
- 17:50unity of my church. How am I going to do that?
- 17:56Personal examination, mutual submission, scriptural
- 18:02confrontation, and beneficial conversation.
- 18:08I'm going to preserve the unity of my church because I love the
- 18:13church. And then I'm going to pursue the
- 18:16strategy of my church by making it my passion to pursue Christ,
- 18:22my priority to portray Christ, my my purpose to proclaim Christ
- 18:25and my my practice to praise Christ.
- 18:28Are you doing that? Is somebody around you derelict
- 18:33in the responsibility in doing that, or disobedient to obey the
- 18:37word God? Because all this is scriptural
- 18:39mandate based on the epistles #3II.
- 18:46I make a promise to protect the testimony of my church.
- 18:52How you can do that? Attending faithfully, praying
- 18:58fervently, giving financially, and living fruitfully.
- 19:08I'm going to protect the testimony of my church because
- 19:11this is where I want to be. And then I want to participate
- 19:16in the ministry of my church. I'm going to do that by
- 19:20exercising my spiritual gift, by edifying the Saints, by
- 19:26evangelizing sinners, and by exalting my Savior.
- 19:35You made a promise to do that when you became a member of our
- 19:39church. You said, this is my promise.
- 19:43I will do this. Well, when you make a promise to
- 19:46do that, then when other people in church are not doing that,
- 19:51what do you do? If they're not attending
- 19:56faithfully, what do you do? If they're not giving
- 20:00financially, what do you do? If they're not living
- 20:04fruitfully, what do you do? Is there a mutual submission?
- 20:10Is there a scriptural confrontation?
- 20:13Is there a beneficial conversation when I speak to
- 20:16people and talk to people? If not, what do you do?
- 20:21You see, this is where the rubber meets.
- 20:22This is church. That's what the church is all
- 20:26about. It's not about attendance on a
- 20:29Sunday morning, singing a few songs, give it a little bit of
- 20:32money and hear the sermon. That's just showing up at
- 20:36church. But church people are committed
- 20:40to the church because Christ died for the church and the
- 20:44church is his bride. And we're deeply committed to
- 20:47the bread of Christ. So Paul says if there's somebody
- 20:52unruly, they don't live according to the instruction
- 20:56that we've already given to you. They're delinquent, they're
- 20:59disobedient. You need to warn them, go to
- 21:03them, warn them. And he's urging them to do this
- 21:07because he knows that the greatest way for the church to
- 21:10to be the church is when the church goes after the church,
- 21:15when the church is is is living the principles of the Scriptures
- 21:22and says, man, I want to help you.
- 21:25You're living an unruly life. You're not.
- 21:29You're not using your giftedness in the church.
- 21:31We need you. We need you to exercise your
- 21:34giftedness in the church because we benefit from your service.
- 21:41We need you to continue to give to the ministry of the church
- 21:43because we can't function without you.
- 21:47We need to exercise your spiritual gift.
- 21:48We need you to help with the salvation of the lost.
- 21:51We need you to help with the building of the body of Christ.
- 21:53We need you. So you go after them.
- 21:57You admonish them, you pray for them and you urge them.
- 22:04That's the church. Paul knows that.
- 22:08So he says admonish the unruly. And this is this.
- 22:12He says, I, I, I want you to encourage the faint hearted.
- 22:18The word faint hearted means small sold those who have a
- 22:23small soul that they need encouragement.
- 22:27And remember, this church had had received the Lord amidst
- 22:30much persecution. And maybe they had gone through
- 22:32persecution within the the city of Thessalonica or maybe even
- 22:36even among their own families. And, and they had become really,
- 22:41really small in their soul. Their, their, their, their faith
- 22:49had grown weak and they were discouraged.
- 22:54They were downcast that they were living in fear.
- 22:58You know, there are people in the church that are that way,
- 23:00right? They live in fear.
- 23:03And he says encourage them, speak, speak a word of
- 23:06encouragement to them. Take the word of God and, and
- 23:09and build them up, strengthen them that they they they might
- 23:14have courage and still them because they are courage less.
- 23:19They don't have the stability. They don't have the strength to
- 23:22continue on. So you need to come alongside of
- 23:26them and encourage them because they are very small soul.
- 23:35And so as a believer you use the scripture to come alongside of
- 23:41them and encourage them. Let me give you an example.
- 23:46On the eve of the crucifixion, the disciples were small soul.
- 23:53They were living in fear, not knowing what's going to happen
- 23:56to the Lord the next day. Even though he told them he was
- 23:58going to be crucified, they did not understand the implications
- 24:01of that. So what does Jesus do?
- 24:05He encourages the faint hearted. He encourages the small soul.
- 24:09What's he say? He says, let not your hearts be
- 24:13troubled. If you believe in God, believe
- 24:18also in me, for in my Father's house are are many dwelling
- 24:23places. If we're not so I would have
- 24:26told you and I'm going to go and prepare a place for you.
- 24:30And when I go, I will come again and I will receive you and to
- 24:36myself that where I am, there you may be also.
- 24:40That's how you encourage the small soul, those living in fear
- 24:48that their future is bright. It's not bleak, it's bright and,
- 24:55and, and listen, I read that. I think to myself, you know, you
- 24:57know why God hasn't called you home yet Because he hasn't
- 25:00finished your dwelling place. In my focus house are many
- 25:04dwelling places. I go and prepare a place for
- 25:07you, right? So is that evidently preparing
- 25:10your dwelling place? Evidently your place is not
- 25:12prepared yet because you're still sitting here.
- 25:15Because when your place is prepared, guess what, You're
- 25:17gone. You're gone.
- 25:20House is ready, Swami, places are ready.
- 25:23They're coming back. Let's go, go get them.
- 25:26Take them right back home. Take them to glory.
- 25:29And that was that was their future.
- 25:33And you know what all those apostles lived in light of the
- 25:36future they lived in light of the coming presence of Christ
- 25:39and their future glory in the presence of the living God.
- 25:45They lived lives strong sold not small soul in the church.
- 25:57Yeah, you admonish the unruly, those who are delinquent and
- 26:00derelict in their responsibilities, those who are
- 26:03disobedient to the word of God. Yes, you need to do that.
- 26:08But there are people that live in fear, who are small soul, who
- 26:13need to be encouraged, someone to come along the side and speak
- 26:18a word of encouragement to them. And they says not only do you
- 26:24admonish the unruly, not only do you encourage the faint hearted,
- 26:30I want you to help the weak, help the weak.
- 26:37These are the people who are weak morally and spiritually.
- 26:43These are the kind of people that that just have a hard time
- 26:48not falling back into sin. They're weak.
- 26:53Remember in James chapter 5 when it says if any among you are
- 26:56sick, the real translation should be if any among you are
- 26:59weak because that's the same word used here in First
- 27:04Thessalonians chapter 5. It's not that you were sick
- 27:06physically, but that it's you're weak spiritually, you're weak
- 27:09mentally, you're weak emotionally.
- 27:13If any of you are weak, let them call upon the elders.
- 27:15If you're spiritually weak, call upon the spiritually strong to
- 27:18pray with you and to pray over you.
- 27:21Why? Because they're gonna instill
- 27:23strength in you, help the weak. There are many people in the
- 27:28church that are so fragile and they just, they just, they're
- 27:33trying to run away from sin. They're trying to get away from
- 27:36sin, but there's something about it that just pulls them back in
- 27:38again and they fall into invitation.
- 27:41Those kind of people, they, they need, they need help.
- 27:44Galatians chapter 6 Remember Galatians 6, Paul says you who
- 27:48are spiritual are to restore those who have fallen.
- 27:53You got to help them up. Then you got to hold them up.
- 27:58There are some people in the church that once you help them
- 28:00up, you just got to keep holding them up because they can't stand
- 28:03by themselves, and so you hold them up.
- 28:08Romans 15, verse #1 We then, who are strong ought to bear with
- 28:13the weaknesses of others. That's a church man.
- 28:20That's how church functions. Admonish the unruly, encourage
- 28:26the faint hearted, help the weak.
- 28:31And this is this. This is so good.
- 28:34He says be patient with everyone.
- 28:37Why did he say that? Because you know what?
- 28:40It takes a lot of patience, a lot of long-suffering.
- 28:42When you're holding up the weak who keep falling back into sin,
- 28:46when you're trying to instill courage and those who are
- 28:48fragile and filled with fear and you're trying to admonish the
- 28:51unruly, guess what? It takes a long time for most
- 28:57people to turn. So you got you got to be patient
- 29:01with them. Be patient with with all of
- 29:04them. Paul says be be long-suffering,
- 29:07be be long fused with them. Remember God's love.
- 29:11First Corinthians 13 four, the love of God, the love it says
- 29:14the definite article. The love is patient.
- 29:16The love is kind. It has a definite article
- 29:18because it it describes a particular kind of love.
- 29:21It's God's love. First Corinthians 13 four the
- 29:23love of God is patient. The love of God is kind.
- 29:27God's love is long fused. God is not patient with
- 29:30circumstances. He controls circumstances.
- 29:32He's in charge of circumstances. He makes circumstances happen.
- 29:36He's not patient with circumstances.
- 29:38He's patient and long-suffering with people.
- 29:43So the love of God is patient. The love of God is is kind and
- 29:50possibly wants to be patient. He says over in in Colossians 3
- 29:57verse #12 put on a heart of patience.
- 30:00Ephesians 4/2 show forbearance, long-suffering to one another in
- 30:05love. Second to me 4/2 All leaders and
- 30:08teachers are to minister with great patience.
- 30:12Great patience and the Lord exemplified this.
- 30:19Remember in Mark 9, when, when Peter, James and John and Jesus
- 30:23were up on the, on the mount of Transfiguration and the other
- 30:26disciples are down below. And, and so Peter, James and
- 30:30John and Jesus come, come down the mountain and, and the
- 30:35encounter a man whose son was demon possessed.
- 30:40And he says to the Lord, Lord, I, I, I, I, I took my son to
- 30:43your men that they might cast a demon out of my son because he,
- 30:48he's thrown to the ground. He, he foams at the mouth.
- 30:50He, he, he goes into convulsion. So I I gave him to your men, but
- 30:55they were unable to help my son. So what does Jesus say?
- 31:05Jesus says this. How long shall I be with you?
- 31:13How long shall I put up with you?
- 31:21Bring your son to me. She brings a son and son goes to
- 31:28the convulsions and Christ casts out the demon and disciples
- 31:33marvel. They go into a house and and,
- 31:36and they, they say that Jesus, Jesus, come over here.
- 31:43We got to ask you a question. How come we couldn't do that?
- 31:46You've already empowered us to do it.
- 31:48We've already done it in the past, but on this occasion we
- 31:52couldn't do it. How come?
- 31:55And Jesus says these things only come out by prayer.
- 32:02He told him. He says, look, you didn't do
- 32:05this depending upon me. You did this depended upon you.
- 32:11And once you depend upon you, you can't do anything without
- 32:14me. You can do nothing.
- 32:16And so now you're trying to do this on your own power.
- 32:19You can't do that. You need me and you try to
- 32:22operate in this ministry in the flesh, and you failed.
- 32:27But if you'd have depended upon me, these things come out by
- 32:29prayer. And they're like earlier Siphons
- 32:37were on a boat. Jesus said let's go to the other
- 32:39side. They get in the boat, storm
- 32:40happens. They fear for their lives.
- 32:42Jesus, don't you care that we're perishing?
- 32:44Wake up. He gets up.
- 32:47Hush, be still. Everything becomes like glass.
- 32:49What'd you say? Oh, you cowards calls them
- 32:57cowards not to believe. How do you of all men have no
- 33:06faith? Not that.
- 33:08How come you guys have a little faith?
- 33:10He says. How is it that you of all men
- 33:12have no faith? Because faith is believing what
- 33:16God has said. What did God say?
- 33:18Let us get in the boat and go to the other side.
- 33:20But they didn't believe that because they when they got in
- 33:22the middle, they thought, oh, we're not going to make it to
- 33:23the other side. That's not what Jesus said.
- 33:26He didn't say, look, you're not going to make hopefully you make
- 33:29it to the other side. He says we're going to the other
- 33:31side. They didn't believe that.
- 33:36They thought they weren't going to make it.
- 33:37They didn't believe that. So he calls them cowards.
- 33:42Oh, you men who should have faith to believe and all that.
- 33:48I've said same thing on the road to Emmaus.
- 33:53At the end, Luke 24 disciples were confused.
- 33:57I couldn't believe that Jesus died and rose again.
- 33:59Where is he? What happened?
- 34:01How did he die? O ye men of little faith not to
- 34:06believe and all that the scriptures had already said.
- 34:14God was long-suffering with his men patiently, because the
- 34:20church, unfortunately, like the disciples, take a long time to
- 34:25get it. So you got to be patient.
- 34:29You got to be long-suffering. You got to hold up the week.
- 34:33You got to help them up, hold them up.
- 34:35You got to encourage the faint hearted, you got to admonish the
- 34:38unruly. And they don't just turn around.
- 34:41I'm happy. Some do, but for the most part
- 34:44they don't. You got to keep going back and
- 34:47going back. That's the church.
- 34:49That's what the church does. Both.
- 34:51I'm going to give you the instruction now.
- 34:53Handle man's transgression. When they disobey the
- 34:56instruction, that's the church. It's not functions.
- 35:03It's what separates the church from everything else because we
- 35:07are so desperately concerned about the people in their walk
- 35:13with the Lord. This is this.
- 35:19I know, I know, my time is gone. By the time I'm done, it's going
- 35:23to be way gone. Verse 15 See that no one repays
- 35:29another with evil for evil, but all we seek after that which is
- 35:34good for one another and for all people.
- 35:40There were people in the church that would repay evil for evil.
- 35:44Believe it or not, that happens. It doesn't happen to people in
- 35:47the first service, only the people in the second service.
- 35:51But it does happen in the church.
- 35:54We, we, we pay caustic comments with caustic comments.
- 35:59We repay slander with slander, gossip with gossip, backbiting
- 36:02with backbiting, fists with fists, blows with blows.
- 36:07Paul says, you know what? Don't do that.
- 36:10No, don't do that. Instead, those who have done
- 36:15evil, I want you to repay them with goodness and kindness.
- 36:19God's love is patient. God's love is kind, right?
- 36:23All the while God in his long-suffering, His patience
- 36:26with us, what's he do? He just bestows acts of kindness
- 36:30upon us. When you sin, you don't die,
- 36:34although the Bible says the wages of sin is death.
- 36:37Why don't you die? Because God is patient,
- 36:39long-suffering and kind. He lets you live right?
- 36:44And so all the while you are living your life, the patience
- 36:47of God, the long-suffering of God is bearing with you.
- 36:51And what does he do? He lets the sunshine upon the
- 36:53just and the unjust, let's the rainfall upon the just and the
- 36:56unjust. God, God is just good to all
- 36:58men. Read the Old Testament.
- 37:00God is good to all men, not just some men, because he's a kind
- 37:04and loving God and he's a patient God.
- 37:08So Paul says, look, I want you to know this.
- 37:09I want you now to not re repay evil for evil, but I want you to
- 37:13repay everybody who does evil to you with goodness and kindness.
- 37:19Well, we don't want to do that. That's just, it's not right.
- 37:27I, I, they got to, they got to know that I was hurt.
- 37:31They, they got to know that he pained me.
- 37:34They, they got to know that this was very, very uncomfortable for
- 37:37me. They they got to know this.
- 37:39And if I don't tell them who will?
- 37:41Probably nobody but you repay kindness for, for evil.
- 37:51Peter says it this way. This is so good.
- 37:55Peter says, 3 verse #8 To sum up all of you be harmonious,
- 38:01sympathetic, brotherly, kind hearted, and humble in spirit.
- 38:09He says to these Christians who are, who are scattered abroad, I
- 38:13want you to be harmonious, I want you to be brotherly, I want
- 38:16you to be kind, I want you to be one in spirit.
- 38:20And so he says this, not returning evil for evil or
- 38:23insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead.
- 38:27For you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a
- 38:31blessing. Do you know why you return good
- 38:35for evil? Because you have been called by
- 38:37God to inherit a blessing and the only way you inherit that
- 38:40blessing is by blessing those who curse you.
- 38:44So inherit the blessing. He said but, but, but but wait
- 38:50and but Peter answers that because he knows there's going
- 38:53to be a but there but but but what about this person or but
- 38:56what about that person? But, but and Peter answers that
- 39:00by quoting Psalm 34. He says, for the one who desires
- 39:05life to love and see, good day, good days must keep his tongue
- 39:10from evil and his lips from speaking to see.
- 39:13He must turn away from evil, do good, he must seek peace and
- 39:20pursue it. Why?
- 39:23Here it is ready, for the eyes of the Lord are toward the
- 39:26righteous, and his ears attend to their prayer.
- 39:32But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
- 39:39God hears your prayer. God attends to you and your
- 39:42need. But know this, His face is
- 39:46against those who do you evil. He will deal with them.
- 39:52Let him do that. What do you do?
- 39:57You repay evil with goodness and kindness.
- 40:01Because you've been called to inherited blessing, he says in
- 40:07First Thessalonians Chapter 5. These words, he says, seek
- 40:10after, pursue after that, which is good.
- 40:12In other words, it's a hunting term.
- 40:15I'm not a hunter, but I know that when you go hunting you,
- 40:18you go to search for that which you want to shoot and kill and
- 40:23then, Lord willing, eat right. That's what you do.
- 40:26I don't know, I'm not a hunter. But you pursue you, you hunt,
- 40:28you track him down. Well, that's what you got to do
- 40:31when it comes comes to to your acting, acting good.
- 40:36You got to pursue. You got to hunt down goodness.
- 40:40Why? Because for some people it's
- 40:43hard to be good to, right, you know, those people, it's hard to
- 40:48be kind to them. It's hard to be good to them.
- 40:50It's it's hard to, to, to bestow a blessing upon them.
- 40:53They, they are so out there. But, but you got to pursue it.
- 40:57You got to hunt it down. You got to find a way to get it.
- 40:59And once you get it, do it. That's what you do.
- 41:04Paul said, man, this is the church.
- 41:05That's what you do and run the membership.
- 41:07That's how you make it happen. Admonish the unruly.
- 41:12Make sure that you, you truly encourage the faint hearted,
- 41:15those were small souls, and help the weak.
- 41:18But make sure that as you go through this, you were very
- 41:20patient with everybody because it's going to take a long time
- 41:22for most of them to ever get the strength and to turn from where
- 41:26they're at. And all the while you're trying
- 41:30to help them and they're upset with you and mad at you, you
- 41:33just keep returning kindness and goodness and blessing upon
- 41:36blessing because you've been called to inherit a blessing.
- 41:42That's the church. So Paul says simply, I, I, I
- 41:53want you to to obey the principles and precepts of
- 42:00Scripture. Then what?
- 42:02You rely on the person and power of the Holy Spirit some way to
- 42:07do this. There is no other way.
- 42:13That's what Paul would say over in Second Thessalonians.
- 42:15These words, chapter 3, verse 14.
- 42:18If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take
- 42:22special note of that person and do not associate with them, that
- 42:25he will be put to shame. Yet do not regard him as an
- 42:28enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
- 42:35Don't treat him as the enemy, acknowledge him as a brother,
- 42:42but they need to obey the instruction of the word.
- 42:46You'd do that. You know, it's so interesting
- 42:49because because you know, Paul lists these things and honestly,
- 42:57unruly didn't tell you how it just says do it help the weak,
- 43:02then tell you how it just says do it.
- 43:05Encourage the faint hearted, then give you instead of instead
- 43:09of lists of things to do to encourage them.
- 43:14He says you're paid good for evil just gives commands.
- 43:20Why? Because you see, the model
- 43:23church doesn't have to have an explanation.
- 43:26They just need to know what the expectation is because they're
- 43:31going to obey the principles of precepts of the word of God.
- 43:36And as we go into next week, you'll see how he just keeps
- 43:39giving. Rejoice, always pray without
- 43:44ceasing and everything. Give thanks doesn't tell you how
- 43:48to give thanks, doesn't tell you how to rejoice, doesn't tell you
- 43:53why it is you are to pray without ceasing or even how you
- 43:56do that doesn't have to. It's the model church.
- 44:01He just gives them the exhortation and they're like,
- 44:04OK, we can do that. And that's the way we should be.
- 44:10OK, Lord, we, we can do that because you, you gave us the
- 44:15word. We'll do that.
- 44:17We might not do it perfectly, but we do it because we want to
- 44:21honor the Lord. So here is the model life.
- 44:28The model life abstains from sexual immorality, aspires to a
- 44:36life of charity, anticipates the return of deity, is alert to the
- 44:42world's destiny and my responsibility adapts within
- 44:50God's wonderful family. And lastly, which is next week,
- 44:56They adore their God continually.
- 45:02They'll rejoice always. They'll pray without ceasing.
- 45:07They will give thanks and everything, for this is the will
- 45:10of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
- 45:15That's the model of life. That's the life Paul wanted them
- 45:19to live. That's the life we as a church
- 45:23need to live. Let's pray together.
- 45:27Father, we thank you for this day.
- 45:30It's a great day because we realize Lord, this is what we do
- 45:35as a church, to be the church, to act like the church, to live
- 45:41like the church. Our prayer Father, is that we
- 45:45would be obedient and fulfilling our responsibility.
- 45:51Lord, we love you and because you died for us and rose again,
- 45:59we now live for you and we celebrate that in Jesus name,
- 46:06Amen.
