- 0:00Speaker 1: As we are now currently joined by the associate coach
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the Huskies, all decked out in that pink jumpsuit
- 0:06Speaker 1: and white jacket. Boy, you are styling. But that's stew though.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I mean, no matter what day, I mean, you're always styling.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 0:13Speaker 5: Yeah you don't. You haven't.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You haven't gone down to the sweats like the rest
- 0:16Speaker 1: of them. No, No, that's not you. That's certainly not you.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I tried during COVID I did, I know, well, actually didn't.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I just wore a sweater and pants. But I tried
- 0:25Speaker 2: as as close as you just didn't.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I think the last time you wore a sweatsuit was
- 0:29Speaker 1: probably when we were in a sterile Florida playing in
- 0:32Speaker 1: that Gulf Ghost thing over Thanksgiving and it was like
- 0:34Speaker 1: an ice box.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that might have been. We had a blanket too.
- 0:39Speaker 5: So did Debbie.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I mean, Debbie and Meg weren't ready to and I
- 0:42Speaker 1: told Debbie, I said, get blanket, you're gonna need it. Yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 1: it was bad. Well, today you guys took care business.
- 0:49Speaker 3: We did. We did. It was you know, there are difficult.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Their record is deceiving.
- 0:54Speaker 2: They're a difficult team to play against because they run
- 0:56Speaker 2: a lot of really good offense, and even when we're
- 0:59Speaker 2: up by a lot, they still take advantage and you
- 1:02Speaker 2: look bad because you give up, you know, back door
- 1:04Speaker 2: cuts and some of those things. But I thought Page
- 1:07Speaker 2: started off very aggressively, and when she does that, we're
- 1:10Speaker 2: a different team. So having her be aggressive and on
- 1:14Speaker 2: the offensive end and on the defensive end, you know,
- 1:16Speaker 2: we were able to create a lot of turnovers, which
- 1:19Speaker 2: was helpful, and that helped, you know, start the engine.
- 1:23Speaker 4: You talk offensively, spread the wealth, so you put the
- 1:26Speaker 4: pedal to the metal, and it really didn't let up.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Everyone contributed in their way, whether it was three point
- 1:32Speaker 4: shooting or the back door cuts that you yourselves were
- 1:34Speaker 4: pretty good at executing the offense.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was balanced.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I thought, you know, we were able to get a
- 1:39Speaker 2: lot of people a lot of different minutes and try
- 1:41Speaker 2: to balance that out too, which is always helpful.
- 1:44Speaker 5: What about the decision to grow zone in the second half.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's funny because we don't well we
- 1:54Speaker 2: don't even practice it.
- 1:55Speaker 3: We have not practiced.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It's something that we talk about a lot, and we
- 1:58Speaker 2: put it in you know, like, well throw it out there,
- 2:00Speaker 2: but we don't spend a lot of time and practicing
- 2:02Speaker 2: on which we're going to need to because I think
- 2:03Speaker 2: that that's something down the road that will give us,
- 2:06Speaker 2: you know, a different option and something else to go to.
- 2:09Speaker 2: But I thought we we actually one of the best
- 2:12Speaker 2: possessions of zone. They got the bank in three with
- 2:16Speaker 2: like one second ago, but we in terms of how
- 2:19Speaker 2: we played the zone, that was our best possession of zone.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So it's, you know, something that we have to get
- 2:23Speaker 2: better at and work at and communicate a little bit better.
- 2:26Speaker 2: But it's not something that we do a lot of.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But yeah, and when you say that too, they actually
- 2:33Speaker 4: made you know, sometimes that ball rotation. They look like
- 2:35Speaker 4: I think maybe it's just because the way haven't played
- 2:38Speaker 4: mandamand but they were talking and like, okay, line up, Okay,
- 2:40Speaker 4: they have to drop back and I'll cover the garden.
- 2:43Speaker 3: You heard them talking. You heard them talking. Oh good,
- 2:45Speaker 3: I just want to point that out.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So I was like, yeah, that's something that we as
- 2:50Speaker 2: a coaching staff struggle with, Like they you know, our
- 2:52Speaker 2: communication and the and the talking and the verbal and
- 2:56Speaker 2: is not as good as where it needs to be.
- 2:58Speaker 2: It's not as good as where it should be. And
- 3:00Speaker 2: that's something that we work on. And you know, you
- 3:03Speaker 2: think you think at this level the things that you
- 3:05Speaker 2: should talk about, you know, there's different skill development and
- 3:09Speaker 2: one of the hardest things and if you talk to
- 3:10Speaker 2: any coach in the country that to get kids to
- 3:14Speaker 2: do is to talk and to communicate and just to
- 3:16Speaker 2: describe what they see and what they're doing. And it's
- 3:18Speaker 2: it's kind of a phenomenon in my mind because it's
- 3:21Speaker 2: probably the Yeah, maybe they want to text it to them,
- 3:24Speaker 2: but we don't have time for that.
- 3:26Speaker 3: But it is one.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Of the it's it's you can't play basketball without speaking.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And that's one of our frustrations that we, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: spend a lot of time on Chris.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Does the coaching staff like or are they good with
- 3:40Speaker 1: what the three point defense has been like? And I'm
- 3:43Speaker 1: not just talking today. Yeah, you gave up twelve threes today,
- 3:45Speaker 1: but going into Thursday and going forward, is it where
- 3:49Speaker 1: you where you want it to be?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Well, I think you have to look at who you're
- 3:52Speaker 2: giving them up to. Like the concern would be us
- 3:55Speaker 2: giving them up to the McGuff kid, because we know going.
- 3:58Speaker 3: In she's their leading scorer.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But there was one kid I think she made her
- 4:02Speaker 2: eighth and ninth today. So I think some of it
- 4:05Speaker 2: you have to depend on who you know. I know,
- 4:08Speaker 2: I didn't even scout them. I was like, I asked
- 4:10Speaker 2: Morgan if I if I helped out on that one.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But I think it depends on how they're getting them
- 4:14Speaker 2: and who's getting them and why you you know, you
- 4:17Speaker 2: can't take away everything. So if you go into a
- 4:20Speaker 2: game and you're playing the numbers, like for instance, when
- 4:22Speaker 2: we played usc we went in okay with certain people shooting,
- 4:27Speaker 2: and they made a bunch so that we had to
- 4:28Speaker 2: make those adjustments in the second half. So you have
- 4:31Speaker 2: to you know, you have to play the statistics. I
- 4:34Speaker 2: think you play the numbers and you and hopefully at
- 4:36Speaker 2: the same time you're getting better at just giving up
- 4:39Speaker 2: threes to people that you don't want to give up
- 4:41Speaker 2: threes to.
- 4:41Speaker 3: And how you're doing it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I think has you know, it probably gives coaches more
- 4:46Speaker 2: concerned than than just doing it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Have you missed Volunteer Orange? You're gonna see a lot of
- 4:50Speaker 1: it on Thursday.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I have not missed Orange at all. I was just
- 4:53Speaker 3: gonna ask it. I'm like, Okay, you had a great
- 4:55Speaker 3: pink out crowd. I think they did it. Yeah, the CD.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You know, I can't say enough about our and the
- 5:00Speaker 2: people and the way they've come out to support the team,
- 5:04Speaker 2: and it's just amazing. And certainly Tay's special having it
- 5:07Speaker 2: be the Pink game, and special for us with our
- 5:10Speaker 2: dedication to Abby in the game today.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I like the borm ups today. Those are nice.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, she is a special part of our team and
- 5:18Speaker 2: our program, and so our kids were very much touched
- 5:23Speaker 2: by her. So hopefully we were able to give something
- 5:25Speaker 2: back to her parents today and long term.
- 5:28Speaker 5: All right.
- 5:29Speaker 1: On a Thursday when we saw them in Brooklyn, I
- 5:31Speaker 1: felt like I was watching Doug Bruno's old teams in
- 5:34Speaker 1: the first half, five in, five out and they just
- 5:36Speaker 1: go ahead, leather.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, they say a lot. I don't know if it's
- 5:40Speaker 2: as much five out, five in and five out now.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I think it might get five four in. I think
- 5:46Speaker 2: maybe they don't do as much as the wholesale subbing.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But they play a lot of players. They are very athletic,
- 5:52Speaker 2: they're long, they press, they shoot a lot of threes.
- 5:57Speaker 2: It's going to be a challenge. I mean it might
- 5:59Speaker 2: be one of those games. It's again, you know, it
- 6:01Speaker 2: took me a long time to get to this place.
- 6:03Speaker 2: But it's a it's a game in February against a
- 6:06Speaker 2: really good team on the road to see where we
- 6:08Speaker 2: are and what we need to do to get ready
- 6:11Speaker 2: for March. I used to not feel that way. I
- 6:14Speaker 2: can tell you that, but I think that's how you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: we may just try. It might just we may blow
- 6:20Speaker 2: up the scoreboard there. It might you know, it might
- 6:22Speaker 2: be one of those one oh seven one hundred like
- 6:24Speaker 2: LSU Oklahoma the other day in terms of offense, and
- 6:27Speaker 2: so you don't have to you know, you can play
- 6:29Speaker 2: people a lot of different ways, and you know, we'll
- 6:32Speaker 2: see how we decide to play on Thursday. And but
- 6:35Speaker 2: rebounding is certainly a concern and certainly it'll be a key.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Although coach keeps telling me, you know, so told me
- 6:41Speaker 2: that one year we were out remounted by twenty when
- 6:44Speaker 2: Diana was there, but we won the game.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I don't I don't remember that. Well.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He said we were remounted by twenty, and I assumed
- 6:52Speaker 2: we won the game the way he said it.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But I don't know that someone should check that.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I don't know, Well, if you shoot sixty five percent,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I mean the guys turned over twenty five times last night,
- 6:59Speaker 1: but they shot over sixty percent.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll see I mean as fast as that
- 7:03Speaker 2: can hide a lot, right, Yeah, especially if you know
- 7:06Speaker 2: you're trading threes for twos. But in this situation, they
- 7:09Speaker 2: like to shoot a lot of threes and they can
- 7:11Speaker 2: go on stretches. I watched the game against South Carolina.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They were down twenty and you know, started to make
- 7:18Speaker 2: more shots in the second half, cut the lead I
- 7:20Speaker 2: think to six or seven, end up losing by seven.
- 7:22Speaker 2: But teams that shoot a lot of threes, I mean
- 7:24Speaker 2: that they can get back into games quickly. They can
- 7:29Speaker 2: also shoot themselves into a problem. But you know, they
- 7:32Speaker 2: always have a chance to get back in the game
- 7:34Speaker 2: if you fall asleep. So it's not going to be
- 7:37Speaker 2: an easy game. It's going to be a tough environment.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I'm sure. I think they still don't like Geno. They
- 7:42Speaker 2: always liked me, but I think there's still not that
- 7:44Speaker 2: choked up about him. That is, there's still not choked
- 7:47Speaker 2: up about him. But so it will be although it's
- 7:50Speaker 2: lost a little bit of that. So it'll be a
- 7:52Speaker 2: great test for us, you know, to be on the road.
- 7:56Speaker 2: We really have to do a much better job than
- 7:58Speaker 2: we've done in the three point shooting defense, but also
- 8:01Speaker 2: in our rebounding and are But the bottom line is
- 8:04Speaker 2: we're gonna have to score too, That's what I mean.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It may be one of those games that we just
- 8:07Speaker 2: go up and down up like today. There were long
- 8:09Speaker 2: stretches where poor Aubrey is at the at the table
- 8:12Speaker 2: twice and it was like three or four minutes where
- 8:15Speaker 2: there was nothing, just up and down. So it may
- 8:17Speaker 2: be one of those games. I don't think it's going
- 8:19Speaker 2: to be, you know, a walk it up type game
- 8:22Speaker 2: at all.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Twenty five years since we had what one O five
- 8:24Speaker 1: one two at U c l A. Oh yeah, gave
- 8:26Speaker 1: one hundred and two point talking.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah that's interesting, but yeah, yeah, we don't like to
- 8:32Speaker 2: talk about that one too much.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Ohth we won. Yeah, as long as it's a W
- 8:36Speaker 3: I'll talk about it. I say that too.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I think your kids didn't look like there were There
- 8:39Speaker 4: was nothing looking ahead. It was all about this game
- 8:42Speaker 4: this moment. It would seem that they want, they know,
- 8:44Speaker 4: take care of business. It's in the big use to
- 8:46Speaker 4: have that respect for conference play.
- 8:47Speaker 3: We're on a mission.
- 8:48Speaker 4: It seemed to be that way, and now now they know, well.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I don't want to say anything. It's more than media
- 8:53Speaker 2: that wanted to talk about it yesterday than our Yeah,
- 8:56Speaker 2: they were so they you know, and I get it.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I get it because that's that's their opportunity. But you know,
- 9:01Speaker 2: I think you have to focus on the game that
- 9:04Speaker 2: you have and honestly, like I said, it's a great
- 9:07Speaker 2: game to have in February, but our conference, in winning
- 9:12Speaker 2: our conference is more important.
- 9:14Speaker 3: So our kids did a good job today.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It was an earlier game, but we didn't get a
- 9:18Speaker 2: shoot around today before. But I think the crowd helped
- 9:22Speaker 2: with that, and I think everything that went on today
- 9:24Speaker 2: helps with that.
- 9:24Speaker 5: All Right, we'll see on Thursday.
- 9:26Speaker 1: All right, thank you, Chris, Chris Dalley the daily recap,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and that'll do it for us.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Here for the Excel Center.
