- 0:07Hennessy funds AST Space Mobile Second quarter results were
- 0:12good, driven by the significant appreciation of AST Space Mobile
- 0:16one which more than doubled during the period.
- 0:19We believe this recent price movement reflects the many
- 0:21favorable developments that have come to light over the last
- 0:24several months. Some of the more notable items
- 0:26include funding of Golden Dome, approval of the Legato spectrum
- 0:30arrangement, continued progress with the FCC and a falling out
- 0:34between President Trump and Elon Musk diminishing slash
- 0:37eliminating potential government or regulatory favoritism toward
- 0:41competitor SpaceX slash Starlink.
- 0:43Despite this move in the share price, we believe AST continues
- 0:47to offer excellent opportunity. Not only does the business
- 0:50continue to de risk on technological, financial and
- 0:53regulatory friends, but our estimate of the market
- 0:56opportunity has grown materially.
- 0:58We have always thought that government could be an important
- 1:01customer, but recent disclosures and developments such as Golden
- 1:04Dome reveal a breath and magnitude of opportunity that we
- 1:07did not fully appreciate. We now believe that AST will
- 1:10generate billions of annual revenue from government services
- 1:14as discussed further below. Government Opportunity AST has
- 1:18an opportunity to provide services to the military,
- 1:21intelligence agencies and 1st responders.
- 1:23While the US opportunity is the largest, there is significant
- 1:26potential with other nations as well.
- 1:29U.S. Department of Defense DoD
- 1:30Communication Services The most obvious use case for AST is
- 1:34enabling secure voice, video and data communications to military
- 1:38personnel on nearly every square mile of the planet.
- 1:41To this end, a June 2025 demonstration in Hawaii with AST
- 1:45and its partner Fairwinds Technologies showcased key
- 1:48defense related use cases for US Indopakam forces including
- 1:52representation from the US Navy, Marine Corps, Army and Space
- 1:55Command, including real time connectivity to the Tactical
- 1:58Assault Kit, TAC over a VPN, multimedia streaming via TAC and
- 2:03secure multi party video calls all executed on standard
- 2:06unmodified smartphones. These use cases are closely
- 2:09related to AST's Commercial Services, so this demonstration
- 2:13provides additional evidence of the core technology working well
- 2:16in a real world setting. U.S.
- 2:18Department of Defense DoD non communication services.
- 2:22The new Trump administration, recognizing that we are
- 2:24inadequately prepared to defend ourselves against novel weapon
- 2:27systems such as drones, hypersonic missiles, and
- 2:30advanced ICBM's, has accelerated modernization efforts across the
- 2:35US military. Obsolete programs are being
- 2:37discontinued and resources are being poured into capabilities
- 2:41to counter these new threats. Central to this effort is
- 2:43advancing US capabilities in space, headlined by the Golden
- 2:47Dome program. Legacy missile defense systems,
- 2:50often composed of ground radar, Geo satellites, and terrestrial
- 2:54interceptor batteries, are designed to neutralize
- 2:56traditional short and long range missiles.
- 2:59The trajectory of these missiles is predictable from shortly
- 3:01after launch, making them relatively easy to intercept.
- 3:05We saw an example of this in June, when Israel's Iron Dome
- 3:08intercepted 80 to 90% of the more than 500 ballistic missiles
- 3:12fired at it by Iran. However, newer long range
- 3:15missiles, such as hypersonic and advanced ICBM's can change
- 3:19trajectory during travel and sometimes include decoys and
- 3:22multiple warheads made to fool existing missile defense
- 3:25systems. This makes these missiles much
- 3:27more challenging to neutralize. the US and its allies are
- 3:29vulnerable to these advanced weapons and need a faster, more
- 3:32accurate, and more distributed missile defense system in
- 3:35response. The unprecedented size and power
- 3:38of AST's Elio satellites make them especially well suited to
- 3:42assist in tracking modern missiles along with a variety of
- 3:45other via how you functions. Research reveals excellent
- 3:48effective isotropic radiated power output, power of a signal
- 3:51when it is concentrated into a smaller area by the antenna and
- 3:55gain to noise temperature, how well the system can detect weak
- 3:58signals amidst noise, enabling a variety of novel capabilities.
- 4:02Possible DoD uses include radar supporting high value military
- 4:06radar applications such as synthetic aperture radar, high
- 4:10resolution imaging using radar signal reflections, ground
- 4:13moving target indication and missile tracking.
- 4:16Assured and alternative PNT position navigation and timing
- 4:20providing a stronger jam resistant signal compared to
- 4:22existing GPS. Improving indoor reception and
- 4:25cybersecurity through authentication and encryption.
- 4:28Blue force tracking, BFT and identify friend or foe IFT.
- 4:32Improving situational awareness of troop and asset locations.
- 4:35Reducing friendly fire incidents.
- 4:37UAS or drone control. Enabling remote control of
- 4:40unmanned aerial systems. UAS in areas lacking terrestrial
- 4:44infrastructure. Signal intelligence.
- 4:46Detecting and reading electromagnetic emissions of the
- 4:49enemy. Signal jamming.
- 4:50Jamming enemy signals over large geographical areas such as
- 4:53maritime zones and remote areas where terrestrial jammers are
- 4:56impractical. Growing momentum with EU DoD.
- 5:00While early the DoD opportunity is beginning to take shape.
- 5:03We know that AT now has at least 6 U defense contracts and we
- 5:07believe that there are multiple classified applications running
- 5:10on AT satellites. Today, the evidence is mounting
- 5:13that AST is going to play an important role in national
- 5:15security. Consider On April 23rd, during a
- 5:18visit to AST's Texas manufacturing facility, FCC
- 5:21Chairman Brendan Carr and Senator Ted Cruz highlighted the
- 5:25national Security benefits from the company's technology, with
- 5:28Carr stating importantly, it's going to help us secure our
- 5:30National Defense, including by making sure we stay ahead of
- 5:34China. On June 6th, AST CFO Andy
- 5:37Johnson commented at AST's annual meeting that the company
- 5:40is positioned to be a very important contributor to the
- 5:43US's Golden Dome program, while noting the services it already
- 5:46provides to the government have overlapped with the capabilities
- 5:48Golden Dome seeks to achieve. Meeting minutes from the June 26
- 5:52Miami-Dade County Board meeting revealed ASTS plans for a 25 to
- 5:56$30 million manufacturing facility on the highly secure
- 5:59home state Air Force Base to increase production and
- 6:02establish a satellite operation center and gateways for
- 6:05government projects. President Trump has set an
- 6:07aggressive three-year timeline to complete Golden Dome.
- 6:10AST's announced launch cadence aligns well with this timeline.
- 6:14Our most recent tour of AST's Midland, TX facility in early
- 6:17July demonstrated that satellite production is ramping nicely and
- 6:20the company is on a path to meet the pace needed to fulfill the
- 6:23launch schedule. And there have been multiple
- 6:25successful field tests with the DoD with more testing to come.
- 6:29Funding and revenue potential. Initial Golden Dome funding of
- 6:32$25 billion was secured with the July 4th signing of the Big
- 6:36Beautiful bill. This should be a watershed event
- 6:39for the space defense industry. With spending ramping quickly.
- 6:42We estimate the DoD will spend $14.5 billion on satellites and
- 6:46related services in 2025. Golden Dome and new funding for
- 6:50the proliferated Low Earth Orbit Satellite based services
- 6:53program, PLEO are forecast to more than double the spending to
- 6:5734 to $37 billion over the next three three years.
- 7:00AST is positioned to be a major beneficiary with its Leo
- 7:03satellites. We think AST's unique technology
- 7:06will enable a number of Golden Dome capabilities and we know
- 7:09the company is 1 of 20 approved vendors eligible to compete for
- 7:12task orders under the PLEO contract.
- 7:15In addition, we think several of AST's current defense contracts
- 7:19are likely to develop into programs of record, each with
- 7:22multi $100 million of annual revenue.
- 7:25We believe AST will generate 1 to $25 billion of annual DoD
- 7:29revenue, mostly from recurring services in the intermediate
- 7:32term. While these are large numbers,
- 7:34they equate to just a mid single digit share of DoD satellite
- 7:37spending. First responder opportunity AST
- 7:41is also poised to enable supplemental coverage for US
- 7:44first responders, law enforcement, fire, rescue, EMS
- 7:47and Emergency Management who require full geographic coverage
- 7:50and 100% uptime, including during natural disasters.
- 7:54In order to provide mission critical services.
- 7:57AST is already partnered with both AT&T and Verizon.
- 8:00AT&T through Firstnet and Verizon through Frontline
- 8:03provide communication solutions to more than 12 million first
- 8:06responders. First Net officials have
- 8:08confirmed they are in the final stages of investing in AS TS
- 8:11direct to device technology. We expect high adoption rates of
- 8:15AST service from both First Net and Frontline.
- 8:18If we assume pricing of $20 per user per month, a premium
- 8:21compared to regular commercial pricing.
- 8:23Reflecting enhanced features for first responders such as push to
- 8:26talk and priority and preemption.
- 8:29A 50% adoption rate and a 50% revenue share with AT&T and
- 8:32Verizon US first responders would generate $720 million in
- 8:37annual revenue for AST in the intermediate term.
- 8:40International opportunity, we believe that most developed
- 8:43nations will want defense and emergency services capabilities
- 8:46similar to the US For example, we understand that NATO's future
- 8:50SAT COM program is actively exploring using AST for 5G
- 8:54directed device service. And Vodafone, AST's joint
- 8:57venture partner in Europe offers mission critical emergency
- 9:00services to 1st responders. They plan to add direct to
- 9:03device mobile broadband satellite services to this
- 9:06offering when it is available. To estimate AT's non U defense
- 9:10opportunity, we begin with our U Defense revenue estimate of 1 to
- 9:13$25 billion per annum. We haircut this by half to
- 9:16reflect smaller NATO and non NATO allied nation defense
- 9:19budgets cumulatively point $5 trillion versus $1 trillion at
- 9:24the DoD and adjust further because these nations will
- 9:27likely spend a lower percentage of their budgets on satellite
- 9:29capabilities leveraging the US Golden Dome where permitted.
- 9:33In total, we estimate that AST will generate 300 to $750
- 9:37million in annual revenue from non-us defense spending in the
- 9:40intermediate term. To estimate AST's non-us first
- 9:44responder opportunity, we begin with our US first responder
- 9:47revenue estimate of $720 million per annum.
- 9:50We adjust our US number to account for differences in
- 9:53population in GDP across all developed nations X China and
- 9:57further adjust for the likelihood that AST will have
- 9:59lower first responder market share internationally.
- 10:02In total, we estimate that AST will generate $400 million in
- 10:06annual revenue from non-us first responders in the intermediate
- 10:09term, total military intelligence and 1st responder
- 10:13opportunity. In total, as itemized above, we
- 10:16expect AST will generate 2.4 to $4.4 billion in annual revenue
- 10:20from worldwide military and 1st responder opportunities in the
- 10:24intermediate term. Beyond this, the US national
- 10:27intelligence budget has about $80 billion versus about $1
- 10:30trillion at the DoD. We do not specifically account
- 10:34for this in this exercise. That said, it seems clear that
- 10:36many of the capabilities that AST is potentially providing to
- 10:40the DoD would also be valuable to intelligence agencies here
- 10:43and abroad. Position sizing AST has
- 10:46appreciated to become a much larger than normal position for
- 10:49us. Even so, we have not trimmed our
- 10:51AST position and we do not anticipate doing so in the
- 10:54short. Given the information we have in
- 10:56front of us today, we have consistently described AST as a
- 11:01special situation investment. It does not fit our typical
- 11:05profile of a well established business with a history of mid
- 11:08teens earnings per share compounding.
- 11:11AST is an early stage business with little revenue and
- 11:14difficult to understand technology.
- 11:17It became public via a SPAC, needs capital to fund its
- 11:21business plan and competes with Elon Musk's formidable SpaceX
- 11:25slash Starlink. That is not the profile of a
- 11:28business that screens well. Even today as the stock has
- 11:32moved up to a mid cap size, it remains relatively unknown to
- 11:36most of Wall Street. Against this backdrop, we have
- 11:40conducted more proprietary research on AST than any other
- 11:44business we have ever owned. And that research combined with
- 11:47the perspective that comes from investing in the wireless
- 11:50telecommunications industry for nearly three decades has
- 11:54informed our view that AST has a high probability of achieving
- 11:58its business objectives and delivering outstanding returns
- 12:01for equity holders from here in the long term, markets and
- 12:05investment portfolios are driven by right tail outcomes.
- 12:09As shown by Hendrick Bessenbinder's research, just
- 12:123.4% of US public companies have driven nearly all the net wealth
- 12:17creation in the equity market above one month treasury bills
- 12:21over the last nearly 100 years. In AST, we believe we have the
- 12:26makings of a right tail outcome. It is rare to find such
- 12:30opportunities and once found they should be assiduously
- 12:34managed. We were flexible and identifying
- 12:37and investing in AST and we believe that similar flexibility
- 12:41of thinking is called for in managing this position size.
- 12:45Our framework for sizing AST. We are looking at 3 inputs to
- 12:50inform the sizing of our AST position, one price to value
- 12:55relationship. In our base case, we believe AST
- 12:58will be worth 5 to 10 X it's current price in five to 10
- 13:02years time. A 30% to 40% IRR over a 7.5 year
- 13:07horizon on a probability weighted basis incorporating a
- 13:11range of potential outcomes. Expected returns are similarly
- 13:15compelling, significantly better than anything else in our
- 13:18opportunity set. Absolute size, value at risk.
- 13:23We consider absolute position size, but also the magnitude of
- 13:26loss that might occur, value at risk if one of our primary
- 13:30negative business scenarios were to come to pass.
- 13:33As we have written previously, we believe AST has a much lower
- 13:37risk profile than it did a year ago and has an estimable floor
- 13:41value. With the emergence of
- 13:43significant government opportunities and gaining
- 13:46control of legato L band spectrum, that floor has been
- 13:50raised. On balance, we are comfortable
- 13:53with the current position, size and value at risk.
- 13:56If we are wrong about the business and the stock performs
- 13:59poorly in the long term, not short term mark to market, it
- 14:03will be an unpleasant set back, but one that we can accept in
- 14:06the context of the overall portfolio.
- 14:09Information advantage AST is a complex and fast evolving
- 14:13business. The information flow is an order
- 14:16of magnitude greater than any other investment we have in our
- 14:19portfolio. Staying on top of this
- 14:22information and synthesizing it has required enormous effort,
- 14:26probably the equivalent of a full time job.
- 14:29We have made this commitment but suspect few others have.
- 14:32As a result, we believe we are in a position to see the image
- 14:36in the mosaic while others are still looking at bits and pieces
- 14:39of tile. This is felt particularly true
- 14:42over the last 18 months or so. We continue to see a host of
- 14:46positive developments on the horizon.
- 14:48Other investors do not seem to be aware of them or do not
- 14:52sufficiently appreciate their significance.
- 14:54It is rare in investing to have an information advantage.
- 14:58We will stay attuned to its continued presence and
- 15:01magnitude. If we use a stoplight analogy, 2
- 15:04of these factors, price to value and information advantage would
- 15:08be green with one absolute size value at risk being yellow at
- 15:14the moment. This leads us to hold our AST
- 15:16position rather than trimming. We will continue to update our
- 15:20thinking as we receive new information.
- 15:23Upcoming milestones. AST continues to be a rapidly
- 15:27developing business. In the coming quarters, we will
- 15:30be watching for the following milestones as measures of
- 15:33progress toward our thesis. One, FM .1 shipment and launch.
- 15:38Two, FM .2 plus Block 2 launches every one to two months.
- 15:44Three Verizon Definitive Commercial agreement.
- 15:47Four, first net Investment and Commercial agreement 5 Further
- 15:52military demos or testing demonstrating 120 megabits per
