- 0:47Blacksburg Virginia. Don't we go to noisy stadiums
- 0:50all around the country. I'm not sure.
- 0:53We have ever been in a scene where bands are any more pumped
- 0:56than they are right here. Tonight waiting right now.
- 1:00For the Hokies to take the field, they are jumping.
- 1:03They are screaming and it's been this way for the last 30
- 1:06minutes, Frank Beamer weights in the tunnel.
- 1:09This is the date that they have pinpointed on the can calendar
- 1:12for a very, very long time. welcome back to the boundary
- 1:44Corner podcast with with my partner.
- 1:47Brian Sigler, I'm Curtis Wilson and Brian.
- 1:51That was the voice of the legendary Ron Franklin, who
- 1:55passed a couple weeks ago and I thought it was not more than a
- 2:00fitting tribute to play the 2003 entrance to the Miami game
- 2:07because man we can say it, right?
- 2:10If you're of our age, if Ron Franklin was calling your game
- 2:14on ESPN, it was a big. In deal, you do, that was a big
- 2:19day, a matchup that weekend. The call was always spot on it
- 2:24just it was so smooth. It set the picture.
- 2:28He got everybody in the mood for a great game and as he said
- 2:33there's no place like doing it in Lane man.
- 2:36It wasn't, he had that one and then the 05 when he called that
- 2:39game as well. That night it was two verses
- 2:42eight. When he came back in 2005, it
- 2:44was three verses 5. So, for a generation if again,
- 2:49when Ron Franklin called your game on Saturdays, like, it's
- 2:52big, it means there's a lot of eyes on the country and, you
- 2:56know, he passed away 79 years old.
- 2:58And, you know, it's one of those things that, as our age, like
- 3:05things like this are going by, you know, Keith Jackson passed a
- 3:08few years ago. And when Keith past it's like
- 3:12it's part of your childhood and your adolescents, like, you're
- 3:15losing it. And it sucks in a way.
- 3:18But when you hear that call, it's just like, I mean, I got
- 3:23goosebumps. Yeah.
- 3:25You know, we were what 20 10, 19, 20 years old when I was I
- 3:32was 19. He were 20.
- 3:34Yeah I was 20. Wow.
- 3:35So rest in peace Ron Franklin. Buddy, we have a lot to uncover
- 3:41tonight. Yeah.
- 3:43Yeah. A lot of stuff happened.
- 3:44The last couple weeks, you know, we obviously are going to touch
- 3:48on a little bit of this national Signing.
- 3:50Day wasn't a busy day per se for the Hokies, but we were able to
- 3:56close out kind of what we expected.
- 3:58Got a couple last-minute additions and you know, we'll
- 4:01talk about that schedule release and how its whilst overall a
- 4:06little little light. We got a little bit of a
- 4:08gauntlet in there. So we're going to talk about a
- 4:10few things tonight here. A little bit of everything but
- 4:12the first thing I want to hit on tonight.
- 4:14Brian is We've been following it and most fokine ocean whose on
- 4:19social media. Then following it.
- 4:21What this coaching staff has done on the trail in the last
- 4:26few weeks is just absolutely phenomenal.
- 4:31Shout out, David coming him over at text sideline, hook me up
- 4:35with this document, it and keeping track of.
- 4:37In these last few weeks, this staff is went to 101 schools of
- 4:44the 101. 70 have been in Virginia.
- 4:49Which impressed said it. Yep.
- 4:53We're going to saturate the state.
- 4:55Yep, we did. And you know, he said it during
- 5:00your in the repressor as well. You know, not just talking about
- 5:04hitting schools where we got prospects, either closing out
- 5:07422 or targeting and 23. But getting those relationships
- 5:12back in schools that don't necessarily have a prospect that
- 5:14are on our radar right now. Just so that those relationships
- 5:18are in Place. You know with the time comes
- 5:21around because it always does. Right?
- 5:23I mean even some of the smaller schools in the state they're
- 5:28going to have a guy pop here there that that's going to be on
- 5:31the division one radar, right? I mean even Charlotte County
- 5:36next to us is had a couple. We've had a couple in Halifax.
- 5:40I mean, not a way, you know, even, you know Lynchburg little
- 5:44bigger but you know, places like that.
- 5:47Yeah. And think of some of the
- 5:48mountain. Pools.
- 5:49And I mean, they literally as we look through this list, they hit
- 5:52everywhere. I mean, they hit down in the
- 5:55Deep, South Western part. They hit South Side, they went
- 5:57to EC glass, somebody, you know, our high school played against
- 6:00and you played against. They were out here in the West
- 6:03End, hitting up, Deep Run in Hermitage on the East End,
- 6:07hitting up style and springs. No doubt we were going there.
- 6:10All sorts of places down in the 75 from the beach, all the way
- 6:15up the peninsula. Northern it sounds.
- 6:19Crazy and it did seem like more than just a handshake and a, how
- 6:22you do them if they think they were in there, you know, problem
- 6:26mentioned today, he was at one of the smaller schools in
- 6:29southwest and when he, when they knew he was coming, there were
- 6:33like 14 teachers who were like, hockey fans or Alum waiting for.
- 6:38I mean. It's a way it just when words
- 6:44are one thing actions are another.
- 6:46Yeah, we received it play out in real time, right?
- 6:49We're seeing and not just shaking the hands of the coaches
- 6:51or talking to the, you know, one or two prospects, that are there
- 6:55for that school but going by and seeing the teachers that are,
- 6:59you know, either hokey alums or a hokie fans that have reached
- 7:02out as the days gone along. I mean, you saw several photos
- 7:07with with, with teachers and with Yeah, I've been with with,
- 7:13you know, even like PE teachers and stuff.
- 7:15I mean, there's stuff all over the place guys, that aren't
- 7:18necessarily directly involved in the recruiting.
- 7:21But had they have an impact, right?
- 7:23They they are, they are ambassadors for the tech brand
- 7:28all the time because that, that's, you know, that's their
- 7:31school. Or that's, who they like, that's
- 7:32who they pull for. So, getting in good with them
- 7:35and showing that they're part of the process.
- 7:38I mean, that's big, that's only Gonna bode.
- 7:40Well, the future it, absolutely. It's a great to see that.
- 7:43Also great to see right now. Hey, basketball going up 11
- 7:48points as we started the show. I think it was a two-point game
- 7:52and I was like, why can't we just squash lesser competitors?
- 7:57Like, they heard it and they have went on a massive run to go
- 8:00up 11 here with about four minutes left in the first half
- 8:03will be watching that and we'll talk a little Hoops later on.
- 8:06It's always good to smash Pastor because Yes, he just had to get
- 8:11people that he's got a punchable face, man, so punching and
- 8:14everything. So let's set up this tonight,
- 8:17guys. We already kind of mentioned it.
- 8:21Big part of not what we talked about today, was the final
- 8:23Signing Day, original Signing Day.
- 8:26The class is kind of a bow on it.
- 8:28Her you say, maybe if you will walk ons and things like that
- 8:31trickle-down, but scholarship, guys are locked in and Brian.
- 8:35We've been talking about this class being a better class.
- 8:40Even with the turnover and I think again it goes to credit of
- 8:44this staff. End in 24/7 ranked 33, fifth in
- 8:49the ACC. What do you think about that
- 8:51before we jump into some of these players?
- 8:53I think they did a good job of holding on to what was there and
- 8:57kind of making a few. A few good moves towards the end
- 9:00to kind of fill out the roster and make sure that we're a
- 9:05little bit better set up going into the 2023 class.
- 9:10And I think they did a good job with that.
- 9:13You know we lost a couple big names towards the end there.
- 9:17Yeah but we replace those with, you know, a couple, a couple big
- 9:23names as well and you know, did a good job of kind of rounding
- 9:29out the edges with some of the last-minute additions between,
- 9:33you know the couple flips we had towards the end of of the cycle
- 9:37in the early Signing Day and then getting a big one from down
- 9:41in Florida to kind of close out this round of signing day.
- 9:46So I think overall the staff did a good job.
- 9:49I'm looking to see, you know, some improvement heading into
- 9:542023. Absolutely.
- 9:56Or at least not giving any ground.
- 9:58Considering the late start in the 2023 2024 is where I'm
- 10:03looking for the big big movement in terms of upswing.
- 10:07In the, in the recruiting pool, where we're, you know, With with
- 10:10the top 20. Yep, you know, Brent prosthetic
- 10:13today during this presser about, basically, this class you start
- 10:17relationships in ninth grade, they're coming in having to
- 10:20start relationships roughly halfway through these kids 11th
- 10:23grade year for the class of 2020 3 in the class of 2020.
- 10:27To was. Well, it was just, this is who
- 10:29we are. This is what we're trying to do.
- 10:32I will say this, I think you're right about next year.
- 10:34I want to see no worse than 33. I'd like to see a marginal gain.
- 10:38I'd like to break, I'd like To see 29-28 be sweet to see mid
- 10:4320s but I think that is I think it's fair and it's and he is
- 10:48painting a picture and setting the standard of like don't
- 10:52expect us to go from 33 to 13 and one year because that's not
- 10:56how recruiting works and it's great to see that for Brian.
- 11:00Let's talk about these three guys that were that signed
- 11:03today. And let's start with this guy
- 11:04first Daquan, right. I mean we got him way back.
- 11:10When when did he commit? We see here.
- 11:15Middle back summer of last year, right?
- 11:16Yeah, I think it was early June. Yep, late June late, last year,
- 11:2364 230 down from Perry, Georgia, he went from like a mid 80s, mid
- 11:28three-star guy to a four-star guy and I mean you know, he
- 11:34would be higher if Rivals had him as a tight end and not a
- 11:37wide receiver. Yeah, rawal sort of screws his
- 11:39composite up but 24/7 who count on what get more breaks him as a
- 11:4690. So, you know, probably mention a
- 11:49few Quick things about him. The first thing it kinda was
- 11:52interesting and I don't think it's shocking.
- 11:54I think, Brian you've been looking at tape.
- 11:57We're going to be a tight end worry in a team process, said
- 11:59that. And he talks about, you know,
- 12:03they qualms athleticism to the position to 30, you know, and
- 12:07he's just another piece of being that tight end oriented team.
- 12:11Yeah. And I mean the thing with him is
- 12:12that he is that that versatile player, so you can put him in
- 12:16line, you can put him in a wing, you can put him in the aah, you
- 12:19can put him out. I mean, he's the guy that can
- 12:21really do it all for you and create mismatches across the
- 12:26offense, wherever he's lining up.
- 12:28So that's really the big thing for him.
- 12:31He's got really good hands. Good ball skills.
- 12:34He did pretty much everything down there at Perry between
- 12:40playing a little bit of quarterback wide receiver tight
- 12:42in on defense. I mean, he's really done it all
- 12:47and that his versatility is as big as asset.
- 12:50It and he's really shined pretty much everywhere.
- 12:53He's lined up, exactly. Alright, so again, tight end,
- 12:57Rune, that be three tight ends. Now with him Harrison, St,
- 13:01Germain and Benji Gosnell. Now, brown flip over talk about
- 13:06the big guy, next Xavier, Chaplin signs a letter intent,
- 13:10even after getting a male offer from Michigan, offers from
- 13:13Louisville. He holds with the Hokies, he
- 13:18hadn't canceled a couple Ovi Store.
- 13:20Other schools. So we might have gotten lucky
- 13:23but 66, he's ran about 330 pounds.
- 13:27Now as Brent probably talked about, he had lost about 30
- 13:30pounds since you know, when he was offered and he camped here
- 13:35and you know, he talked about this is a guy they wanted to
- 13:39keep in the boat right away. Rudolph when visited him, right?
- 13:43When the Dead period ended and he mentioned Elite size, As dip.
- 13:51I think that is categorically corrective how big?
- 13:54Yeah, yeah. 66 3:30. At the at the time he came here,
- 13:59six 6355. So, 66-34 330 is a big man.
- 14:05That's a, that's a big man. And that's that type of size
- 14:10that they're coming in and we're essentially, Get him in the
- 14:16weight room, smooth out the edges, get him in the on the
- 14:20field and get him some reps. Yep.
- 14:23No. There's no, there's not a whole
- 14:24lot of seasoning that he needs in terms of of the weight room.
- 14:31So in that in the weight room, might not be a problem because
- 14:35the one thing that really impressed trial was how there
- 14:39wasn't sloppiness. He, uh, thinks he's athletic.
- 14:42I mean, you see him on the video, she posed.
- 14:45Duncan I'm You have atletic quick, he moves.
- 14:50Well, for that size. Let me ask this when you saw
- 14:52him. Do that dunk.
- 14:54Did you think about any like run blocks?
- 14:56The amount of explosion in his legs like getting a hold of a
- 14:59defensive end and just like probably, I mean, an ollie.
- 15:03Oh yeah, I mean this guy's gonna, I mean, we've seen it on
- 15:06tape. He's got really good for him,
- 15:08run blocking he, he's got good drive, uses explosive male, has
- 15:12a good punch. So, I think, you know, like I
- 15:15said, Rudolph's going to get in there and smooth out some of
- 15:18those edges. But I think this is a guy that
- 15:20could potentially see some time for us pretty quick.
- 15:25Not not sure if it'll be your one but Health in.
- 15:29We are at tackle, look for you two to get him on the field
- 15:32hopefully well and I think with his size, I think you could see
- 15:35year one. I mean, you talk about pump,
- 15:38protection field goal, protection teams.
- 15:42I mean yeah, I mean, you got to weigh that against the you want
- 15:45to burn a wrench. I mean, that's essentially if
- 15:47you can, if you can find a way, not to sure.
- 15:49But if he's your, if he's your best.
- 15:53Number two, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta ride
- 15:56it. Exactly.
- 15:58All right. Well then, there was one brine
- 16:01that kind of came out of nowhere and Prosthetics they doing
- 16:04presser. They try to keep this very
- 16:06quiet. They try to keep it on the down
- 16:07low and literally yesterday everything started flowing
- 16:12through and he committed signed today and that is Devon Alvis 3
- 16:18star out of Melbourne, Florida. 62 180 looks like he's going to
- 16:23probably play the safety position seeing you know,
- 16:27Derrick Jones talked about him being the cheetah and then
- 16:30Pearson Prelude putting some stuff out there.
- 16:32They might be battling for him to play corner or to play it on.
- 16:36Did you get a chance? I know it's been really quick.
- 16:39Did you get a chance to look at anything?
- 16:41I mean, he plays m7a, which is just a monstrous division down
- 16:45in Florida. I haven't looked at a ton of
- 16:48tape. I did kind of quickly glanced at
- 16:50him. I know Provost talking about
- 16:52looking at either boundary corner or potentially free
- 16:56safety for him. So, yeah, I like him either
- 17:00either spot based on the tape that I've seen so far.
- 17:04Got a pretty good build already. I liked it.
- 17:06We're going with a little bit longer Corner 62s, probably a
- 17:09little taller than we're used to, but I like that a little
- 17:13more size and he keeps the athleticism.
- 17:15ISM, despite the extra height there.
- 17:17So I'm looking forward to getting this guy on campus and
- 17:21see what he can do. Yep.
- 17:23And you know, process that he wants to get into about 205
- 17:27being at what he is. Right now, that's a year to
- 17:30gain, probably to get there physically.
- 17:33But again, it's one of those, there's not a lot of Diamonds in
- 17:36the Rough because it's called still ranked among the top
- 17:39thousand players in somehow. You know, no other P1 offers,
- 17:45you know, had I think Virginia state of Virginia Union offer on
- 17:48a few other ones, so pretty wild a kid like that slips through
- 17:53and again I think for the back end at gives us another DB to
- 17:56work with. All right let's talk about real
- 17:59Braun, quick to prefer Walk-Ons in.
- 18:06I don't know a lot about them just names and seeing who they
- 18:09are. But I think it kind of reaches
- 18:11to the point going back to what This is all about being on the
- 18:13trail problem about George balance out of cocks down in
- 18:17Virginia Beach, and Latrell Sutton out of Highland Springs
- 18:23belongs dad's plate here. You know, back in the 1980s,
- 18:27Brother played baseball here at Tech. 61 linebacker luttrell's,
- 18:32and outside, linebacker 61 195. This is how you make inroads.
- 18:38You w player. They both had offers to other
- 18:41schools and Especially sudden I mean we talked about the
- 18:49importance of you know we've had two back-to-back years of taking
- 18:55a preferred walk-on from Highland Springs.
- 18:59True back-to-back years, got a preferred walk-on from Highland
- 19:03Springs absolutely got Purnell as part of this class in terms
- 19:07of scholarship athletes. So getting those inroads is
- 19:10still big and it's going to matter long-term and Again
- 19:16getting a guy like Latrell sudden.
- 19:18I think he's you know, I don't know if he's a guy that can
- 19:21eventually earn a scholarship but I think you know guys that
- 19:24have played there in Holland Springs, they know how to ball.
- 19:27Yes, they do. So if they can get some other
- 19:30things cleaned up in their game that could potentially be an
- 19:32offer there, but you know, worst case that's going to be somebody
- 19:35that can give us a good look. You know, we can week out.
- 19:39Yeah. And again it just keeps building
- 19:41the inroads and recruiting into vital recruiting areas.
- 19:45Our future and in and again, it's also awesome to see George
- 19:52dad played here. You know, guy gets a chance to
- 19:55follow in Dad's footsteps which is always a cool thing just like
- 19:58a lot of the brother's stuff. So awesome to see that I'm sure.
- 20:01We'll have a few more preferred walk-on before the end of the
- 20:04week. Probably, for the next time we
- 20:06meet. All right, Brian.
- 20:08So what we decided to do is you know, we will always went
- 20:13through these players when a lot You know Brown would break them
- 20:17down real quick and sometimes that would take a long time.
- 20:20So as we are getting into season 3 here of the boundary Corner
- 20:25podcast, we're getting smarter not work, it's hard but still
- 20:30making things. Interesting.
- 20:31So we're smarter not harder right smarter not harder.
- 20:34And so the kind of the way we looked at this class and we're
- 20:38going to talk about every player, but we kind of put it
- 20:40into three categories in Players that we like in each category
- 20:45and we kind of broke them down. This we talked about and we
- 20:48mentioned this before, we have a crown jewels of this class.
- 20:52We were kind of the upper echelon for whatever reason we
- 20:55call them one a blue-collar grounder guys, Brian Fields on
- 20:58tape. They just go in there.
- 20:59They do their jobs. Going to have a chance to make
- 21:02it and then the under-the-radar, guys.
- 21:05So Brian. Let's start it.
- 21:06Let's start with the crown jewels and there's four of them.
- 21:10Gunner, Givens start with him. The highest rated player in this
- 21:16Virginia Tech, recruiting class Gunnar of top 200 player.
- 21:20Top 25 at the defensive end position, you know, for Star
- 21:26basically in the, you know, mid-90s low to mid 90s.
- 21:31He is the crown jewel of this class, would you not agree?
- 21:35Yeah, he's definitely there. I put him in.
- 21:38Probably cam Johnson 1A 1B Gunner gets the the slight nod
- 21:43there with the with the slightly higher rating.
- 21:46And, you know, just the pedigree that everyone was looking at
- 21:50that kind of the one of the big dogs in the state.
- 21:52So, and I like it. I mean, you know, it looks like
- 21:57he's going to be be on the defensive line for us.
- 22:00He was kind of That tweener spot as his recruitment went along.
- 22:05There. Is he going to be an interior
- 22:07offensive line? Is he going to be potentially a
- 22:09tight end? Is it going to be defensive
- 22:11linemen settled on defensive line?
- 22:13I think that's probably the best place for him.
- 22:17He's shown good athleticism on both sides of the ball.
- 22:20So I like him there. So they don't make a lot of 65
- 22:24to 70 coming, straight out of high school.
- 22:26Now, that's that's one of those things of like, if given Comes
- 22:31in. I think he's enrolled already
- 22:33and it starts clicking on the defensive line.
- 22:35He's going to have potential to have a role year one, just
- 22:38because of body size. Now you already mentioned the
- 22:42second Crown, Jewel, cam Johnson, you know, top 300
- 22:48player. You know in probably one of the
- 22:53bigger reasons he's up here is where he plays, he plays at st.
- 22:56Francis Academy at is an elite private school for free.
- 23:01Ball. Six, foot, 165 pounds, already
- 23:05enrolled love. Seeing that, how big is it to
- 23:10get that in road to st. Francis with KM, it's huge man.
- 23:16It's huge getting in with schools like st.
- 23:19Francis and I mean, we can just we can run down the list of the
- 23:24screen there. Yeah.
- 23:27We could run through the schools there that we would like to get
- 23:31better relationships with but Saint Francis is definitely up
- 23:34there. You know, with the big boys in
- 23:38that area. And you know, I like this guy's
- 23:42take, you know, he's probably a little bit.
- 23:49I wouldn't say raw but definitely a little little
- 23:52little rough around the edges in some areas of his game but I
- 23:56think out the gate I mean he's got great athleticism and good
- 23:59technique overall. I think you'll make an impact.
- 24:02I don't know about your one but he's a, he's definitely a guy
- 24:04that you need to look out for your to as some of the older
- 24:09quarterbacks on this roster start kind of cycling out after
- 24:122022. It's all so new here.
- 24:15So again, cam Johnson, another one of the crown jewels Use of
- 24:19this class. All right, we kind of started
- 24:21arguing about the next to but we finally settled.
- 24:24We had a debate, we did. But the next crown jewels looked
- 24:28at was Benji guys. Know the, you know, the 65 240,
- 24:34tight end played in Hillsville, this year, originally from North
- 24:38Carolina, he is in the North Carolina rankings, you know,
- 24:41four-star guy, you know, top 20 at his position.
- 24:47You know, top 350 and a country in he was originally committed
- 24:51to Ohio State decommitted. Whatever reason, I'd have to go
- 24:56back and read those stories, but there was a late surge by North
- 24:59Carolina. Try to get him in their boat, in
- 25:01crying them. Essentially closed the deal on
- 25:04it and we know how important North Carolina can be for
- 25:09recruiting. Yep, that's why he's here.
- 25:13Yeah, that's the big thing. So, I mean, when we talk about
- 25:16Benji, guys, do you know, regardless of the, the physical
- 25:19traits, he brings good size, 65 240, going to stealing a From
- 25:25North Carolina's backyard. After they've eaten our lunch
- 25:29for three straight Cycles is pretty pretty fucking good.
- 25:33And I like that we were able to make those moves and get that
- 25:37deal closed, especially with the coaching change and then pry
- 25:40being able to come in there and finish things off.
- 25:43Yep. So again, big big, you know,
- 25:48land getting the footing back in North Carolina, stealing a good
- 25:51player from down there. Big time the The fourth one.
- 25:56He's been there for a while for us and I don't think it should
- 26:00come as and eat it might come as a shock to some people.
- 26:03We consider him a crown jewel, but I feel like we feel like
- 26:07Richard Purnell is a crown jewel coming out of Highland Springs.
- 26:12We're still wondering what people are rating him on.
- 26:15I mean, you know, winner on you love this tape to playing at
- 26:21three technique. You feel like he also could slip
- 26:23out the big end. And something playing, something
- 26:25like a 56 technique. And it's getting that Holland
- 26:30Springs. One of their Elite guys yeah
- 26:35getting that guy to commit stay committed be one of the if you
- 26:40didn't notice were shot out there recruiting every day
- 26:44trying to get kids to come on and he's a crown jewel of this
- 26:48class. Yeah, in my opinion, he is, I
- 26:51mean, we look at it and, you know, I'm going to give the most
- 26:53Credence here to his 2247 ranking and 89 which is, you
- 26:58know, borderline four-star, composite is kind of that that
- 27:03high three item id, three kind of bullshit.
- 27:08In my opinion, I think he probably probably should be
- 27:11literally a high three or borderline for in most rankings.
- 27:16He's not quite there in a couple that, that brought him down
- 27:18there, probably because some of them have him as kind of a
- 27:23tweener on the d-line. That that might be what I think
- 27:27that but watching the tape, it speaks for itself coming from a
- 27:31program like Holland spring speaks for itself.
- 27:34So yeah, definitely a crown jewel in our book.
- 27:37Exactly. So there are the four crown
- 27:39jewels Gunner Givens cam Benji and Rashad the crown jewels of
- 27:46the 2022. Hokies recruiting class.
- 27:51Now, next Braun, we're going to look at the blue collared.
- 27:54Rounders guys tape. Taped it, you love more than the
- 27:59others because I know I know one of them.
- 28:03One of them I was on immediately.
- 28:06You sort of got me suede into the other two and let's start
- 28:11with it. We've already got his brother
- 28:12Kayden here Braylon more and Brian just like big brother.
- 28:19While he a blue-collar ground and did a bunch of nasty and
- 28:21him, he had a bunch of nasty and I'd say he's probably got a
- 28:26little bit more potential upside than his brother but probably
- 28:32isn't going to be able to out the gate play as quickly, so
- 28:36we'll see about that. But really nasty.
- 28:41Really good in the Run blocking game, just like his brother.
- 28:43Hopefully we'll see him really soon.
- 28:46Get on the field and get some chances to show what he can.
- 28:49I do, but I like what we're doing overall with this with the
- 28:54interior offensive line in this class, we're going to speak
- 28:58about the next guy here in a couple minutes.
- 29:00But yeah Braylon more is going to be somebody to keep an eye on
- 29:04because he's going to go in there.
- 29:05And again, that nasty guys always get end up playing
- 29:09somewhere somewhere somehow. I have a feeling to just because
- 29:14of defensive line, I know, we're kind of okay at d-tackle.
- 29:18His sighs. I mean, he could be right there,
- 29:21you know, battling for that soon.
- 29:24So, again, there might be internal fighting between JC,
- 29:27frison, Rudolph soon? Yes, 63 to 90.
- 29:30So, he's kind of got that, he's a saint.
- 29:33Yeah, he's kind of, right, well, you want to play.
- 29:35You don't play me guard, you want to play him, it d-tackle.
- 29:40I guess it's going to pinned on, if knowing him knowing and
- 29:44seeing his game, he's going to probably with that, whatever
- 29:47spots going to get him on the field, the fastest, that's where
- 29:50he's going to end up. He's already enrolled to so they
- 29:53will get to see him in Spring, which I think better helps to
- 29:56get that evaluation when side of the ball.
- 29:58He's going to be on. Yeah, you can get that
- 30:00evaluation pretty quick and that way gets get things settled
- 30:04before you really get into what will probably be a redshirt year
- 30:07for him, his freshman year, so Way he's working with his
- 30:12position group that he's going to be with long term because you
- 30:15got to get a good evaluation on him, you know.
- 30:18Really before that redshirt freshman year so that's going to
- 30:21be important. I think that'll that'll put him
- 30:23fast track on his on his route to you at least the too deep.
- 30:28Yep. Alright, next Guy, Brian, kind
- 30:30of already gave it away. Although we've got a few
- 30:32offensive. Lineman Brian loved.
- 30:35Johnny, Dixon out of Corpus Christi Texas, the 75 cents.
- 30:40Of transferred to Texas. Who's coming back to Virginia, a
- 30:44true Center, correct? Yeah, yeah, I'm sure we're
- 30:49Center. Yeah, I think that's probably
- 30:51why he's on the blue-collar ground because he is a true
- 30:54Center where, you know, those guys have got to be rough.
- 30:59Tough and also smart, as hell, Johnny, not enrolled, yet will
- 31:05slowly start figuring out when these guys will enroll, well,
- 31:09whether it will be First summer session.
- 31:11Second summer session will be getting here in August, but why
- 31:15did you you steer me really hard towards Johnny.
- 31:18Why why Johnny he's got a nasty trade but again, he's a guy that
- 31:24uses his intelligence, his ability to get in the right
- 31:29place and make the play to his Advantage.
- 31:33Just looking at the tape, it looks like a guy that could
- 31:36especially how thin we are at the position after the 2022.
- 31:40To, I think he could be a guy that's going to slip into the
- 31:44starting role or at least a 2d parole by his second year on
- 31:49campus. Also note here, that and again,
- 31:54it was awesome to hold onto him after the old staff left.
- 31:58Yeah. And he talked about what he when
- 32:01he committed back in April Point 21.
- 32:03He talked about, you know, He was he was a Virginia kid, his
- 32:08army kid though, or a military kid, and they got moved out
- 32:11there. And it's almost like this kid,
- 32:14was always a Virginia kid. It didn't matter who the staff
- 32:17because I think he might have came here.
- 32:18Whoever it was. Yeah he was looking to try to
- 32:21get back on this on the east coast probably particularly in
- 32:25Virginia from Jump Street. You know, this wasn't a Texas to
- 32:30BT situation. This was a I'm trying to play a
- 32:34beat irregardless situation. Baa 2, TX 2 VT.
- 32:38There we go. And include again, kudos to the
- 32:42staff. The current staff were closing
- 32:44the deal on the, on the handoff there because you know, things
- 32:47can still go sideways, you know, in those situations.
- 32:52So the fact they were able to stay on him and and close it out
- 32:54was good because he had quite a few good offers.
- 32:57So it was one of those to stay on and make, you know, make sure
- 33:00you close the deal. Alright, final guy here,
- 33:02speaking of VA in the 15 Kyrie moist in the 64 220 pound,
- 33:09defensive end out of King's Fork down in Suffolk.
- 33:14In this is one you pushed even more on me than Johnny but why
- 33:21do you see is him in that grinder, type role with moist
- 33:24and so he's got a motor and he's going to need it because he's
- 33:28probably going to play play that smaller end opposite of Gunner
- 33:32opposite. You know, Pernell if he ends up
- 33:34sliding outside He's got quick as he he often pass rush with
- 33:40his hand in the dirt and standing up.
- 33:42So he's kind of got a little bit of Versatility there.
- 33:45When it, when it comes to pass rushing, really good at getting
- 33:50flattened fast, chasing running backs out of the backfield.
- 33:54So you got a lot of tackles for loss where he tracked down a
- 33:58running back from behind behind the line of scrimmage.
- 34:01So I like his game overall. Again it's going to be a little
- 34:05bit of getting Ting, getting some weight on him and seeing
- 34:08how he can handle that. But, you know, out the gate, I
- 34:12like his his ability. Excellent.
- 34:15So again, our blue-collar grinders for whatever reasons,
- 34:17the streaks of nastiness Motors intelligent play bread and more.
- 34:23Johnny Dixon Kyrie moist in there.
- 34:25All right, Ron three guys, we are putting it under the radar
- 34:29and we've already talked about one of these guys.
- 34:32It was Daquan right. He was again a mid three-star.
- 34:37Just five months ago and now four star.
- 34:41We've talked about his athleticism, his versatility
- 34:43being able to probably line up anywhere as a tight end.
- 34:47And even though now he's a four-star we put him here
- 34:50because he wasn't he committed, it was just like well this is a
- 34:54good player and he's all for. This is still somewhat somewhat
- 34:58pedestrian, right? Somewhat very pedestrian.
- 35:01So you know, definitely under the radar In you know, it
- 35:06seemingly some of that extra tape with 24/7 made them go.
- 35:10Whoa, this is, this is a little different with this kid.
- 35:14Yeah. I'm, I was sitting here from day
- 35:17one. When I watch this guy's take.
- 35:18How is he not a four-star? How you do that?
- 35:24You did. It was mind-boggling how this
- 35:26kid was not a four-star and, I mean, you know, 24/7 is updated
- 35:30their their ranking for him, you know?
- 35:34We looked at it when we were putting this, some of the notes
- 35:36together for this episode. Well, yesterday or day before?
- 35:40Yeah, Rivals having him as a wide receiver is what's bringing
- 35:44down his, his composite rating on on 24/7 and on on three, if
- 35:49y'all have it checked out on three, some of the, the folks
- 35:53that started 24/7, have another recruiting site.
- 35:56Now, they've got ranking similar to 24/7.
- 36:01They go a little bit deeper industry standard.
- 36:04Great because if you look at industry standards, shout out at
- 36:07three industry standard. You're like when Brian was I'm
- 36:11sure you went on three. It's like who's bringing him
- 36:13down freaking Rivals? Hasn't like a 5.5 like a load.
- 36:18Not a myth 3 star. They have him as a low
- 36:21three-star. Even what ESPN has him.
- 36:25He was either a 79 or 80. Yeah, it was like a, it was a it
- 36:29was a high three very high three-star.
- 36:31So on three you kind of Of see a composite of a girl over there.
- 36:36You figure out who's bringing him down.
- 36:38Alright, next Guy Brian under the radar price.
- 36:43Do you? Yeah.
- 36:45Bryce Duke one of our many scholarship running backs.
- 36:50One of our many scholarship. Hey Willie a couple this class.
- 36:55Yeah yeah we we trimmed it down significantly.
- 36:58Compared to was it 2020 and 2021 aliens but Bryce.
- 37:04Do you got a Tuscarora up in Leesburg 5 1196 pounds running
- 37:08back and re-enroll, which is great.
- 37:12We were up at Tuscarora visit again because obviously, they
- 37:15they're not one of those. It's every 10 years.
- 37:18Tuscaroras putting out solid players every day, you use it,
- 37:22not every year, but why is he under the radar?
- 37:26He won the Metro player of the year, he had some ungodly
- 37:30numbers. In.
- 37:32I was told the brown I'm like we got to put in here because it's
- 37:36where he plays and who he plays those scores, not in the biggest
- 37:39division, the or Northern Virginia.
- 37:41So they're not playing allow the powers.
- 37:45If Bryce jute, put up those numbers somewhere here in
- 37:48Richmond or down in the 75. He wouldn't be a, he's like an
- 37:5485 composite, he'd be a 95 composite.
- 37:57Yeah, it breaks to played in Chesterfield.
- 38:00Virginia Beach. Every every D1 school would be
- 38:05coming after him. Chris time.
- 38:06Rumors, he put up. Yeah, Chris time but he doesn't.
- 38:12So last year we are now What we don't know is does, his does
- 38:19that Talent scale up yet? Yep.
- 38:21We haven't seen what that Talent looks like against higher level
- 38:24competition and we want, it'll be enough years.
- 38:28Yeah. It's going to it's going to be
- 38:29at least a little bit but I think I mean you can't turn your
- 38:34nose up at that production. Know it's hard to ignore that
- 38:39and running back is a position that you don't necessarily the
- 38:45jump in. Doesn't necessarily negate the
- 38:48ability, right? Yeah.
- 38:50Because Usually the thing that is that you see more with with
- 38:56the running back position, is that with other positions?
- 39:01I should say not the running back position.
- 39:02Other positions level of talent, you're usually talking about a
- 39:05lot lot. Bigger players, yep.
- 39:08But that matters more in the trenches that matters more when
- 39:11you're a linebacker as a running back.
- 39:14I mean as long as you can take the hits I mean the level of
- 39:17competition is only going to impact you so much.
- 39:21Only so much now I will counter this if you're playing what a or
- 39:26to a yeah and now that really has been interested in
- 39:31something. Look at what tusks or is I
- 39:33thought they were 38. We're efforting this and I might
- 39:40be completely wrong, but I swore Tuscarora High Schools 3A.
- 39:46I don't think they're too are. I don't think they can be to A1A
- 39:49being up in Northern Virginia and that's impossible.
- 39:54I hope he's by the way, up, 14 points, early, keep it rolling
- 39:59early 17, they're really putting the hammer down which is great
- 40:03to see. Obviously it has been more than
- 40:05a couple times this year having good leads and letting them
- 40:08dwindle away. And I feeling that tonight, that
- 40:13just missed a big dump for Georgia Tech where is Tuscarora,
- 40:18Brian, efforting efforting Georgia Tech cannot literally by
- 40:31shot right now. Ten-foot jump shot rooms out to
- 40:36get the rebound way up there. Short, we hit a three and now
- 40:42we're up 17. There we go.
- 40:44That's what we like to hear. That's what we like being in
- 40:47their division for early so therefore they're not the five
- 40:52or six. Therefore so they're playing
- 40:53some decent schools. So again it's not one or two, a
- 40:58or don't but don't Don't crap on one day or two a guys like Jeff
- 41:02King. No Justin Hamilton and other
- 41:05players have came from those small schools.
- 41:07All right Brian. Let's hit the last one up.
- 41:10The under-the-radar guy still trying to figure out his raid in
- 41:13here. From the RBA Thomas, Dale,
- 41:17Malachi moss and 63. 310 pound guy, guys.
- 41:21Got interest from pet interest from pitt, had interest in
- 41:24Colorado, Iowa State, Minnesota, Mississippi, State, NC State,
- 41:29Penn State West Virginia, UCF. You see ya?
- 41:33So good programs had super interested in.
- 41:38He's right at the mid-30s. I can't figure this out.
- 41:43He plays for a good. Team he plays in a good League,
- 41:46he chose production, he has size.
- 41:50He also doesn't scale as a scholarship which is awesome.
- 41:53If y'all read that story, some military stuff with his family,
- 41:59he's going to be on the team and he is not going to count as a
- 42:01scholarship, which is awesome for the team.
- 42:04But, you know also that, you know what kind of background he
- 42:06comes from. Yeah, I mean, this is the legit
- 42:09division one player that doesn't count against the scholarship.
- 42:11This isn't, you know, a chair, a charity.
- 42:14Even this this is this is us getting a guy that I think can
- 42:18do a good amount of damage and not counting against the
- 42:21scholarship number. So that's huge and, you know, we
- 42:26talked he's under the radar, you know, he's right there in that
- 42:29mid three range but I mean looking at looking at his
- 42:31tapie's Look at the build 633 10.
- 42:37I mean, he's going to be you interior.
- 42:40He's on the Indie tackle. This is a big need position for
- 42:44us and I think just foundational wise he's coming in at a size
- 42:48where like I said it's more of a you know you buff out the edges
- 42:52and I think he's going to be ready to do some damage inside
- 42:54there. Yeah and one of the tougher
- 42:57things to again it's where like the recruiting stuff Kind of
- 43:03screws up is. Any player that size is a mid
- 43:08three. You know is it's just really
- 43:12tough. Sorry having to do something
- 43:14here. Folks.
- 43:16It's just really tough to figure out how this guy flies under the
- 43:19radar. I would understand if we look at
- 43:21his offer list and we were his biggest.
- 43:23All right, let's see, have the CF and he had some coastal's and
- 43:28other places like that. But the school's I mentioned are
- 43:31legit Big Ten, Big 12 and you know, s Using spoons.
- 43:37He's got all of the Big G five schools on the east coast and
- 43:42then a good handful of power five schools, some of them with
- 43:48you know histories of putting out some really damn good
- 43:51defensive lineman like pit and like NC State in the other thing
- 43:54is where you place Thomas Dale, he's playing teams like bird.
- 43:57We know the product bird can put out in the toeic has put in
- 44:00players out, he playing Hopewell, where Henderson went
- 44:03Petersburg Dinwiddie That's a good schedule, that's a good
- 44:08schedule, that he played against, so blows my mind why
- 44:11he's one of the under the radar guys.
- 44:13So again folks the three under the radar guys.
- 44:17They Quan right. Bryce Duke, Malachi my Madison.
- 44:22So and like I said, we could have put Daquan right in there
- 44:26with the crown jewels if it wasn't for the fact that he was
- 44:29legitimately under the radar June.
- 44:33So the class in general again 33rd we feel, we feel good about
- 44:38it because there are some players in that, had some good
- 44:40tape and with this change in regime We feel like the probably
- 44:47going to be able to use them better and More in touch.
- 44:52Yeah. And you know, I think we kind of
- 44:56were expecting A big loss in the class as being a side effect of
- 45:03moving on which we needed to do and it you know, banerji players
- 45:07aside. You know, I think we came out
- 45:11about as good as we could have. Expected was a bump in the road
- 45:14and it's yet how easy to think. When Justin Fuente essentially
- 45:18stepped down, we were 26 27, we only drop about five to six
- 45:23spots which is only does not happen.
- 45:26All right, Brian. Real quick.
- 45:28I want to just hit you on this and then ask you a quick
- 45:30question. The recruiting makeup
- 45:32scholarship wise of this class? I mean, including Malachi
- 45:34Madison just because he's that type of player offensive ly, one
- 45:38quarterback. One running back two wide outs,
- 45:42three defensive ends. Six offensive, lineman
- 45:45defensively, six defensive lineman's one linebacker and
- 45:49three defensive backs. What it if this is you, if
- 45:55you're the director of player Personnel, recruiting whatever,
- 45:59how would your typical year look?
- 46:01Like, how would you want it balanced out?
- 46:04Because to me, this year is a hell of a lot better than what.
- 46:09We've done the last couple of years.
- 46:11It's a lot better because you always want to be like every
- 46:14year you want At least a handful offensive lineman at least a
- 46:19handful of defensive lineman, I think, defensive lineman and all
- 46:24of its alignment. We probably went a little
- 46:26heavier than we would in a typical year just because we
- 46:29have such a deficiency on both sides of the ball at those
- 46:32positions right now. And you always D bodies because
- 46:37you got five on the offensive line, you got to start, you got
- 46:39four on the defensive line, you got to start and defensive line,
- 46:42you're probably rotating a full eight, guys.
- 46:46To get it right? Yeah.
- 46:48To get even so. So so you're talking about eight
- 46:51positions that you're going to have to have game day.
- 46:53Ready on both sides of the ball? Yep.
- 46:56So you're saying probably offensive defensive line four to
- 47:00five a year regardless. Just we're taking eight to ten.
- 47:03We could go 11. We could go 12 exactly what
- 47:07about defensive back because that's when we went three I felt
- 47:10like we could go one or two more.
- 47:12Although I put zaevion Bradshaw at wide receiver he could Be
- 47:16over on the defensive backs that he does have that skill set,
- 47:19same with defensive back for 25 or do you could you go lower
- 47:23because of I think you can go, I think he can go for just because
- 47:27there is some position fluidity with some positions that we
- 47:32have. Now, you know, there's some guys
- 47:36you recruit as a safety that might end up at Sam.
- 47:38There's some guys that you recruited saying that might end
- 47:41up at safety. So there's some position
- 47:43fluidity there that could have some overlap But I think like
- 47:474324 in a given year, maybe at the top end 5, but for would
- 47:52probably be the nice little middle middle ground there for
- 47:56DBS. And, you know, some of that's
- 47:59just going to depend on how the cycle is going through.
- 48:01Whether you're still heavy at corner, whether you're still
- 48:03having a safety and what that makeup looks like because
- 48:07safety. Obviously there's a little more
- 48:09position fluidity that there would be at somebody that's a
- 48:11true Corner. Yeah like km and like DJ last
- 48:15year Yep. And then the the rest, the
- 48:18linebacking groups, the tight ends wide receivers running
- 48:20backs. Quarterbacks, I'm one of those,
- 48:23I think we should take a quarterback every year.
- 48:26You don't know who's going to hit.
- 48:27You don't know who, you know, who's going to click.
- 48:30When they get to College the running back room.
- 48:33The way we add done it, just completely messed it up.
- 48:36I don't think we can take one of year.
- 48:38I think that's a two or three position a year because
- 48:40sometimes you have those guys come in and it does take them a
- 48:44while to get going, some guys can Take a look this year, it
- 48:49would happen. Give it a few games started
- 48:52rolling. You should have six to eight
- 48:56scholarship running backs at any given time.
- 48:58Not six to eight in one cycle. We had at one point.
- 49:04What 12? Or 13?
- 49:06Scholarship running backs on the roster?
- 49:08Yeah kind of insane can't do you know I feel like wide receiver
- 49:13linebackers depending on your Or offensive system incited.
- 49:17The peony offensive systems that's going to fluctuate you
- 49:21could probably get by with when we're here in front private
- 49:24generally say tight end dominant offense I don't think we're
- 49:29going back to the 1970s and run you know some sort of 78 million
- 49:35line just pound the ball but I think what they're looking to do
- 49:38is you're probably going to have minimum two tight ends on the
- 49:42field at a time 12 Personnel unless we are in Some sort of
- 49:46hurry up come from behind mode, but then, but then you take a
- 49:50look at guys like Daquan, right? And even a guy like, Drake or
- 49:55James Mitchell, we're even you can stay in 12 Personnel, right?
- 50:00You can say it well, personnel and still run your entire
- 50:03Playbook. They're playing The Joker.
- 50:05So, it's one of the interesting things going to 2023 will be
- 50:09paying real attention to keep an eye on folks.
- 50:11See how our, how their balance in this class out.
- 50:15Look at avoids of the next couple years.
- 50:18All right, Brian. Oh, by the way, we did take a
- 50:21kicker Didn't want to leave him off.
- 50:23We have a kicker on scholarship, he better be kicking field goals
- 50:26year, one much like Peter Moore did hunting.
- 50:31All right. Have you worked out last year?
- 50:32Hopefully it works out this year Order review, Brian, no ends no
- 50:36out. I guess that's good.
- 50:39Guys, this point, that's good. I mean right now we're probably
- 50:42going to see a little bit of fluctuation as we get towards
- 50:46the end of winter workouts, and will probably see more
- 50:50fluctuation. Or the spring Gabriel as we
- 50:54approach, the spring game but the fact that we didn't lose
- 50:58anybody in the process there, I think bodes well for folks,
- 51:03buying in at least in the short term, you know.
- 51:06I know some people are going to if they don't see themselves
- 51:09jumping up the depth chart like they want.
- 51:10That's another story, but at least in terms of what the
- 51:13coaches is, is selling right now.
- 51:16They're buying it. So I'm good with that now.
- 51:19Nobody in nobody out, but Jamari, Connor, and Annie Dear
- 51:22Thompson announced they're turning.
- 51:23That's good for the back end and I was big and I think I think
- 51:27Shamari Connor is going to be Sam.
- 51:29I think you doing the same. Now do you think he's going to
- 51:32play Sam and nickel or because what we've seen and what?
- 51:37Everybody Robbie who were going to be discussing within a couple
- 51:40weeks here last couple years? They stayed in base regardless
- 51:45like you go, three wide cool. We got a Sam linebacker, I can
- 51:48run what I want to run out of here with him.
- 51:52And I think it's good for him for Jamari, Connor to play that
- 51:56Sam. That's what he's going to play
- 51:59in the league. Now, the question is going to
- 52:01be, if we do, go to Nickel mr. Mori.
- 52:04Leave the field. That's the question.
- 52:08Yeah, a big one. And so there's there's two
- 52:12schools of thought here because You know, playing Sam.
- 52:16He's probably going to get less day-to-day practice at the
- 52:20things that he's probably are the deficiencies in his game.
- 52:23Yep. So he, that may not be something
- 52:27where you can just kind of flip the switch and moving back out
- 52:30there again and best, he'll still probably had the same
- 52:34liabilities in those situations that he had this year because
- 52:36he's not going to be wrapping it as much, even as he was last
- 52:40year that said having Having some fluidity there where you
- 52:46don't have to go. Nickel a true nickel package
- 52:50every time that that definitely helps.
- 52:53Well, it helps if you plan hurry UPS, right, very up team just
- 52:57like, we don't need to sub out. We're going to go to this next.
- 53:00If you have, if you got a team that you know, you get them in a
- 53:03third and long and you got a chance to, you know, they're not
- 53:05hurrying up so you can get your your true Nickel in there and
- 53:08get yourself package in there. That's fine.
- 53:11But if they're going hurry up, then you can stick with your
- 53:13base and still not. Be vulnerable, even though you
- 53:16still, you know, you don't have it as many still have, probably
- 53:20more holes than your nickel package has if they're going.
- 53:23Hurry up, but you're not bleeding.
- 53:26No, you're not at all. All right, Brian.
- 53:29Well let's flip it over to this. We're going to talk about more
- 53:32staff additions. We are completely away from Mom
- 53:36and Pops. Now we're not we're not you know
- 53:38Nationwide corporate we're definitely Regional corporate
- 53:41now and let's start with this one.
- 53:43If you recognize the name sounds familiar especially the last
- 53:47name it shouldn't surprise. You Jalen Belen has been hired
- 53:53to serve as the Director of own campus.
- 53:55Recruiting, why does the violin name sound?
- 53:59So familiar ask well, John Berlin was basically Frank's
- 54:03chief of Staff. 30 years, basically from the moment, Frank
- 54:08walk through the door and tell you he she comes from Wake
- 54:12Forest where she was an assistant.
- 54:14Essentially she was day, Paulson's chief of staff and
- 54:19their on-campus recruiting coordinator.
- 54:21So what she's doing here? So obviously has some
- 54:24backgrounds had been there for a couple Seasons graduated from
- 54:31Georgia, Southern mom. Mom is the chief of staff of the
- 54:35men's basketball program that are watching right now who was
- 54:37up 20 points. Second ago, love the high run.
- 54:41Yeah, I mean, you can say, you know, ties, I mean obviously
- 54:44that's that. You can spend that one way or
- 54:47the other but you know she's got the Bona fides to the back that
- 54:51up and I think it's going to be a good good asset and someone
- 54:56that Already kind of has an understanding of the way
- 55:00Virginia Tech operates and I think that's important and
- 55:02that's that's the big thing that prize.
- 55:04Been looking at, as he's built both the on the field staff and
- 55:07the off. The field staff is some of that
- 55:09familiarity with how Virginia Tech operates the, how to sell
- 55:13it. And also understanding the
- 55:15limitations and how to make sure that those don't get highlighted
- 55:18as well, which is just, as important in the recruiting
- 55:20process has anything else as well.
- 55:22Exactly, it's that she's basically been a hook your whole
- 55:26life with the exception. Option of going to Georgia,
- 55:28Southern for undergrad. You know she you know she left
- 55:33Blacksburg at 18, she's lived in Blacksburg for 18 years.
- 55:37You don't think she doesn't know that place ins and out like you
- 55:39said, know what to sell know what not to sell.
- 55:42Now she's the director of on-campus recruiting.
- 55:46So I think that she's primarily going to be the person when they
- 55:49show up for their visits. Now, the director of recruiting
- 55:54Kami Nations Kami Nations coming to us from Marshall.
- 55:58So, obviously Mike Villa on the ground.
- 56:00Anna. All of fingerprints, all over
- 56:03this higher. So, what did you do with her
- 56:09Thunder hitch? Yeah, she was at.
- 56:11She was at Marshall, when they signed their best class ever,
- 56:14ever. Ever.
- 56:15In bullying me wrong, I think having Charles up there is
- 56:17helping them out a lot, but having knowing someone like,
- 56:21this saw it be done in a way. It's awesome.
- 56:26But, you know, you know it, as at worst, they're not fumbling
- 56:29the bag behind the scenes, they're getting everything done.
- 56:32That needs to be done. Yeah.
- 56:34You know whether they're moving the needle forward.
- 56:36They're not, they're not setting the needle back.
- 56:38Nope, not at all. Um, she's actually been in
- 56:41Collegiate football since 2013 where she started as an
- 56:44assistant, a student assistant LSU that is her alma mater.
- 56:49So she graduated there in 17, then she went over to
- 56:53Mississippi State and served as a recruiting assistant while
- 56:57filigrana was the director of recruiting.
- 57:01Also some connection there joke, Moorhead was coaching there
- 57:06during That timeframe also Chris Marvel's are at that point in
- 57:09time as well. So obviously we see some
- 57:11interconnections there. Yep.
- 57:13In Dom, you know 1920 she was over at Austin Peay You know, I
- 57:21feel like this is, you know, solid resume, not blowing your
- 57:29things, but I feel like this is a villa Grana Comfort higher,
- 57:32from where his position is NOW essential he's worked with her
- 57:36and basically, he's saying to himself, she's going to get her
- 57:39shit done. I'm not going to have to worry
- 57:41about what she's doing that office.
- 57:43Yeah, well I think there's two things that stand out to me.
- 57:45So number one is obviously the relationship with the look Rana
- 57:48and the come Effort level that he has with her doing the roll.
- 57:51Number two, you know, we talked about the resume, but the resume
- 57:55says to me is that she's seen the inner workings of pretty
- 57:58much every level of college football to some degree up to
- 58:02this point. Yeah.
- 58:04The biggest programs. The bit, one of the biggest
- 58:06programs, your run-of-the-mill SEC.
- 58:09She's seen high-level G5. She's seen FCS.
- 58:13Yep. I mean, she seen how the
- 58:16recruiting happens at different levels and brings That
- 58:19experience to the table. Yeah, awesome.
- 58:21So welcome her aboard. All right, Brian.
- 58:25The next guy. when this floated down to us, was about 10 days
- 58:31ago, Like we have a pretty big high school head coach.
- 58:38He's coaching 275, he's coach down in North Carolina and it
- 58:42looks like he's going to be doing something.
- 58:47Glenwood Fair be gets announced director of high school
- 58:50relations. All right, so first of all,
- 58:53you've been in North Carolina, last couple years down Jewish
- 58:58Chambers down outside. Charlotte this team is 3085 over
- 59:03the last three seasons, they won back-to-back state titles in 19
- 59:07and 20 before that. He was Devon Hunters.
- 59:11Head coach down in Indian. River, and he coached down at
- 59:18Lakeland in the 75. and soften went to Liberty.
- 59:27I mean. What more do you want from a
- 59:31director of high school relations than that resume?
- 59:35See a, what is there to say Glenwood Farabee to me, it
- 59:39sounds like a golf name right Linwood.
- 59:42Farabee approaches the par-4 9th for his tee shot.
- 59:47Yeah, but what I really like about this higher is that it
- 59:51speaks further to that point that we've been making is that
- 59:54this isn't mom-and-pop anymore. We're approaching this from a
- 59:58corporate standpoint. Wait and wait for him to improve
- 1:00:03our Outreach to those high schools and improve the
- 1:00:06relationships. Also kind of set things up for
- 1:00:09the future because having those relationships, please helps us
- 1:00:12be strategic when we were just getting out of it, you know,
- 1:00:15which are which is really good to hear, because the guy has,
- 1:00:20I'm going to be director of high school relations in.
- 1:00:22I've been out of it, eight or ten years.
- 1:00:24You might have a good feel of what it's going from the
- 1:00:26University and what to look at. But maybe not so much.
- 1:00:31What's going on inside the high schools now, as you know, kids
- 1:00:35evolved. But Brian, let's continue to
- 1:00:37flip because the strength conditioning staff has added
- 1:00:41quite a few new members as well. And let's start by taking a look
- 1:00:48at the first to me. This looks like a basic hiring
- 1:00:52of this is my right-hand, man. He knows how I want stuff done,
- 1:00:57Greg Allen six years ago. Dodie you.
- 1:01:00So obviously, spend some time with the white Galt Also Serve
- 1:01:05down at Richmond before that in Marshall.
- 1:01:12This just seems like this is the whites right hand man.
- 1:01:17Yeah, definitely seems like this is a guy that he has a high
- 1:01:20degree of comfort level with that.
- 1:01:22He's bringing on. So yeah, I think that's going to
- 1:01:25be the guy that he's leaning on most in this staff, probably at
- 1:01:30the gay just because of that Comfort level.
- 1:01:33Yes, sir. Now, the next man needs no
- 1:01:36introduction. In Blacksburg Jarrett Ferguson
- 1:01:40returns Ferguson obviously a crucial player in the 99 season
- 1:01:47play for the Hokies 98. 201, then came back as the senior
- 1:01:52strength and conditioning coach 16 or 2006. 217 again it, you
- 1:02:00said it just a few minutes to go with Jalen Belen.
- 1:02:03In. You've got to know your culture
- 1:02:06and it seems like it every level Brent prize having a culture
- 1:02:10higher? Yeah, every level there's a
- 1:02:13culture higher. There's a guy that understands
- 1:02:17Blacksburg understand what it means to be a hokie understands
- 1:02:21the tradition and Jared Ferguson is just, another example of kind
- 1:02:27of getting back to the roots but still pushing pushing forward
- 1:02:32into kind of a new era as well. So, I think that's really what
- 1:02:37the staff is about. Injured person is kind of a
- 1:02:39microcosm of that on the strength and conditioning stuff.
- 1:02:43Absolutely absolutely. Alright.
- 1:02:45KJ forms, I'm still trying to figure out how we stole this guy
- 1:02:51KJ Florence last year last few years had served as the
- 1:02:55assistant strength and get you coach down at Old Miss.
- 1:02:57Yep. You just primarily for running
- 1:02:59backs, tight ends, and quarterbacks and specialists.
- 1:03:03Obviously, Matt Correll has shaped himself into probably
- 1:03:06being a first-round quarterback this year.
- 1:03:11You know, maybe it's just getting back home, guys,
- 1:03:14originally from Virginia Beach. He had went sometime in Marshall
- 1:03:17and 19 digit, some internship down at Georgia.
- 1:03:20So he's seen some workings of two, pretty big SEC programs and
- 1:03:25now we have him here really like this higher.
- 1:03:29Yeah, this is big for us. You know, again, getting back
- 1:03:32somebody that meeting with the Virginia Beach area, you know,
- 1:03:37went to Old Dominion for undergrad, graduated in 2014, So
- 1:03:41this is somebody with deep ties to Virginia that we were able to
- 1:03:45kind of bring back into the fold and I think having that pedigree
- 1:03:50and then seeing again, talk about old miss, you know, you
- 1:03:55also was at What marshall yeah from a while as well.
- 1:03:59So he seen seen a good deal of programs in a short period of
- 1:04:04time. I think he's going to be a big
- 1:04:06asset for us. Absolutely last one.
- 1:04:09Matte green holla. Coming from Georgia Southern.
- 1:04:13So obviously, you know, obviously probably has some
- 1:04:16contacts with Brad, Glenn there but did an internship down the
- 1:04:20South Carolina and if you know remembered the white did have
- 1:04:23some connection down to South Carolina.
- 1:04:25So to me it's not a probably not probably partially a buddy
- 1:04:29higher. Yes.
- 1:04:31But someone who spent three years at Georgia.
- 1:04:33Southern, he'd spent three years in appstate as system strength.
- 1:04:37Conditioning directors. They're probably Is one of those
- 1:04:42things where you've got. You got your right-hand man this
- 1:04:47is an up-and-comer that knows what you like same way
- 1:04:52important. You got Ferguson to me, you got
- 1:04:54Ferguson who knows the culture you've got Blacksburg.
- 1:04:59You've got KJ who sing big-time programs and develop some
- 1:05:03big-time players. And then once again you've got
- 1:05:06the whites kind of guy. So kind of a guides.
- 1:05:10I know these guys are going to hell.
- 1:05:11If these other guys along. Yeah, I mean, you know, we
- 1:05:14talked about strength and conditioning.
- 1:05:15I mean, yes, they have, you know, they're not quite as
- 1:05:19impactful day-to-day as the coach would be.
- 1:05:22But, you know, we talked about a guy that was interning in South
- 1:05:25Carolina and was working primarily with the defensive
- 1:05:28line that had your baby and clowning on it.
- 1:05:31You know. That's, that's a, that's a
- 1:05:32pretty big deal UGA. It's the Citadel spent time at
- 1:05:37appstate. Now, Georgia, Southern now with
- 1:05:40that, it comes to us. This resume is a guy that is
- 1:05:44kind of building there and I think this is yes it's a I don't
- 1:05:47I wouldn't call it a buddy higher, it's a relationship
- 1:05:48higher. Yeah and I think this guy has
- 1:05:51shown aptitude to get the job done, wherever he's landed at.
- 1:05:55So, freaking lutely. And then, Brian, there is a new
- 1:05:58position amongst Virginia Tech strength or Virginia Tech
- 1:06:03strength conditioning. And that is the director of
- 1:06:05sports science, who is Brian Jackson.
- 1:06:10He's had Add a similar role to this down.
- 1:06:13We've been married last year. Also did some stuff down at Duke
- 1:06:18implementing Sports Performance program is down there.
- 1:06:22It's really interesting to if you heard prior talk today.
- 1:06:26Basically he's it sounds like he's monitoring everything.
- 1:06:31These guys are doing, like, I know he mentioned something
- 1:06:34about like if a guy has a hamstring injury and he says
- 1:06:38he's okay in the stuff that Jackson's reading says now
- 1:06:42something's going on because his explosiveness is here.
- 1:06:45It was here. Yeah.
- 1:06:48And so he's almost like I'm not saying a private detective for
- 1:06:52the coaching staff on this sort of stuff, but he kinda is, and
- 1:06:56then his background, he was in the 82nd Airborne.
- 1:07:03I mean, what could it, you know, what are you going to say to a
- 1:07:07guy who's done that? Yeah, I mean he's here Here's a
- 1:07:11parachutist lady's life out there did that, and, you know,
- 1:07:19doing it in a way that, you know, is is even intense
- 1:07:23relative to, you know, the the normal side of that.
- 1:07:28And then and then coming into a roll like this, you know, I
- 1:07:31think putting putting science behind those essentially, the
- 1:07:35training aspects that we're looking at here and, you know,
- 1:07:38whether someone can be pushed harder.
- 1:07:41Whether they need to be pushed a little less but, you know, based
- 1:07:44on the data and based on things that he seeing, I think that's
- 1:07:51going to be big for us having in the scientific approach.
- 1:07:55And again, this this speaks more to us kind of coming into the
- 1:07:5821st century and using, you know, all the tools that are
- 1:08:02available at the tool belt and not overlooking anything that
- 1:08:05could benefit us off the field and on the field.
- 1:08:09Yep. 100% couple other things announced today, too.
- 1:08:13Big of a Winslow and you know, in a petty are going to be
- 1:08:16retained. Thank both those guys doing very
- 1:08:19good jobs in. This is interesting, kai-shan.
- 1:08:24Jared is going to move to a defensive GA roll me and you
- 1:08:28were trying to look back felt like Kai Shang was doing
- 1:08:32something with the Redskins a few years ago more on field than
- 1:08:35in a development role. Don't know.
- 1:08:38If this is one of those things is like as they are slowly
- 1:08:41building the analytics and changing the player development
- 1:08:43team. It's cool that he gets to stay
- 1:08:47because he is a hokie through and through probably one of the
- 1:08:49better safeties in the last 5-10 years and guy who had shot him
- 1:08:57and Chuck. Yeah.
- 1:08:57If not for probably a freak neck injury probably would still be
- 1:09:01in the league in some capacity because he was showing out there
- 1:09:05Yeah, I think this is big and I think getting him into a role
- 1:09:09where he can kind of have an impact on the field as well, is
- 1:09:12going to be good for him. I don't know what his long-term
- 1:09:15goals are in terms of whether it's coaching or, you know, a
- 1:09:19higher level off the field roll. But this kind of gives him that,
- 1:09:23you know, he's got experience both off the field and now he's,
- 1:09:27you'll have some on the field that he can kind of pivot,
- 1:09:30whichever way he decides to go and, you know, hopefully that
- 1:09:32ends up being long term with the Hokies but I This is a good good
- 1:09:37kind of career building move for him and something that's going
- 1:09:40to help us on the field as well. Abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 1:09:45All right, before we get into some of our other topics
- 1:09:47tonight, we are going to take a quick pause for a message from

- 1:10:16Now back to the episode and we are back in for those who are
- 1:10:22watching us or watching the game, listening to us Hokies up
- 1:10:2616 with less than six minutes to go over.
- 1:10:28Georgia Tech. Let's just go ahead and put it
- 1:10:30away and make it a 20-point victory.
- 1:10:33There we go. All right Brian.
- 1:10:35This week, the schedule was announced.
- 1:10:39We knew everybody, we were playing, we just, and we knew a
- 1:10:42few of the orders, but we didn't know the complete order, and now
- 1:10:45it's kind of been laid out there.
- 1:10:48Let's kind of do this by quadrants of for.
- 1:10:51Right, let's take a look at the first four games we are at ODU,
- 1:10:55which will either be a Friday night or a Saturday game.
- 1:11:00Pretty sure. CBS Sports has that.
- 1:11:02I'm pretty sure they're probably going to put that in a prime
- 1:11:05time window. So be looking at a six or seven
- 1:11:07kick either one of those nights. So pretty big there.
- 1:11:15Yep. And then the home opener is not
- 1:11:17an easy task for Brent Pride, you know.
- 1:11:21Boston College in, you know Djokovic coming back and a
- 1:11:24pretty well coached team. They're well-coached team and a
- 1:11:28team that during the Fuente era kind of had a snake bitten.
- 1:11:33Most of the time except for that, that one game we got them
- 1:11:37when they were turning the ball over.
- 1:11:39So I think this is going to be an interesting one to look at.
- 1:11:43You know, are they going to be a step up or step down from where
- 1:11:47they were last year? I think, you know, See how we
- 1:11:51are at this point? I think ODU is probably a good,
- 1:11:56a good team to kind of cut our teeth against before we get into
- 1:12:00an ACC opener. Yep.
- 1:12:03Because they are, they are a team that doesn't have as much
- 1:12:07talent as we do, but they are a team that plays above their
- 1:12:11talent level, at a consistent level.
- 1:12:14So I think that's kind of a good, a good way to cut our
- 1:12:16teeth and then we'll see what we got against Boston College.
- 1:12:19Yeah. 19th of September is the Wofford game and, you know, an
- 1:12:23FCS team in which we need because September 22nd Thursday
- 1:12:32night Lane, Stadium against West, Virginia.
- 1:12:39What? When you this series happened,
- 1:12:41right? In, you know, it's Thursday
- 1:12:45nights aren't what they used to be for Collegiate football
- 1:12:48because the NFL is essentially taking it over, but this is like
- 1:12:52a power play right here because you're talking about the, the,
- 1:12:57the mountaintops of Thursday nights.
- 1:13:02Yeah. We're some of the West Virginia
- 1:13:04games. Absolutely.
- 1:13:05Absolutely. And I think Going to be Jack
- 1:13:10that game. I think the crowd is going to be
- 1:13:12Jack. I think there's going to be a
- 1:13:14bunch of people from the ages of 23. 273, not going to work
- 1:13:19Thursday or Friday that weekend and making it a full weekend.
- 1:13:23But to have that game because you immediately, when that thing
- 1:13:27popped up Thursday you you that's a Nike.
- 1:13:31Oh yes. As soon as it pops I was like
- 1:13:32yep. That's going to be Thursday
- 1:13:34night. Prom time.
- 1:13:37Prime time. We got West Virginia.
- 1:13:39Leah coming in to Blacksburg. They've got the Black Diamond.
- 1:13:42We want that shit back. Yes we do.
- 1:13:46And that's really going to kick off.
- 1:13:48What becomes a The Gauntlet stretch of this schedule, right?
- 1:13:52Yeah. The next four games, including
- 1:13:54the by go as follows at UNC, which is not scary place to play
- 1:14:00at pit, where it is scary, because it's so damn quiet.
- 1:14:05Miami at home on the 15th, open on the 22nd for a by and then a
- 1:14:09Thursday night game, the only Rowley he's hey yeah.
- 1:14:15That's gonna be a big A game which of those four games
- 1:14:19worries you the most probably. Probably Thursday.
- 1:14:27The NC State is going to be our toughest competition but I'd say
- 1:14:31pit is probably one be just because of how we historically
- 1:14:35play when we go to Heinz Field and even though I think pits not
- 1:14:41going to be as good as they were this year.
- 1:14:43I think they're going to still have a little smoke, they'll be
- 1:14:46good enough and that might be hopefully we're not the same
- 1:14:51same team that's traveled to Pittsburgh the last few years.
- 1:14:55And laid some eggs. Exactly, let's hope that is
- 1:14:58going to be washed away in the prior era.
- 1:15:01The other two games are just probably the two most talented
- 1:15:04teams will play all year. Rankings y star, y, yes.
- 1:15:09And in terms of just over all the recruits that they put have
- 1:15:14in the guys that they've grabbed in the portal UNC and Miami will
- 1:15:18be the most Talent Laden teams that we will play in this
- 1:15:22period. Despite the fact that they
- 1:15:25haven't always played up to that their their ranking the exactly.
- 1:15:32I kind of look at the first eight games and so much is going
- 1:15:37to be tone setting, right? Yeah.
- 1:15:40What happens in those first eight games, is it?
- 1:15:43You know expectations I don't some people already like a twin
- 1:15:48six wins. 10 wins, somebody said 12 wins, trying to realize what
- 1:15:53that person was on but you know, to each his own.
- 1:15:56Ha ha ha. Well, um, I mean there's there's
- 1:15:59not a game on here that we couldn't win.
- 1:16:02No, there's not, but there. But there sir.
- 1:16:04I don't think I have no illusions that we would come
- 1:16:07close to running the table. Yeah, the best part about this
- 1:16:11schedule. Let's talk about the last four
- 1:16:12games. Georgia Tech is going to be
- 1:16:15November 5th, Then followed by at Juke at Liberty, and then UVA
- 1:16:19at home. Best thing about this schedule,
- 1:16:22top to bottom is the furthest drive.
- 1:16:25This team has is pit, so they're definitely going to be getting a
- 1:16:31lot of these Places. You know, some Pro Hokies
- 1:16:34they're going to get you know like we should try that we
- 1:16:38should travel. Well you don't have to worry
- 1:16:42about the the travel fatigue is much.
- 1:16:45Yep. You're not on you.
- 1:16:47Not on a plane as long as I own the buses long and I mean, I'll
- 1:16:49all that is shortened. And then you talk about the
- 1:16:54stretches. So we start, I'd say we started
- 1:16:59about it. The average level, we ramp it
- 1:17:01up. A little bit.
- 1:17:02But then we kind of got a little bit of a, of a coast and Coast
- 1:17:06into the Finish. You know, I don't think it.
- 1:17:08I don't think it gets easy, but it definitely tapers off.
- 1:17:12I think it's easy. I'm sorry.
- 1:17:15Georgia Tech is Georgia Tech and Duke.
- 1:17:17Yeah, I'll give you their hemorrhaging players.
- 1:17:20Yep. Hemorrhaging players, I mean
- 1:17:23with Georgia Tech is hemorrhaging, Dukes under Elko
- 1:17:26on her brand-new system. Brand-new everything trying to
- 1:17:30get back to Duke where they were there.
- 1:17:31Are going to be a tough out. I just don't think they have the
- 1:17:34talent right now to do anything no, not this year.
- 1:17:38Liberty, Malik, Willis ain't coming back.
- 1:17:40They got Charlie Brewer. I've seen Charlie Brooker play,
- 1:17:45Charlie Willis, I know you freezes, it, freaking genius all
- 1:17:50offensively but he's not exactly working with a potential NFL
- 1:17:54quarterback. He's working with a average
- 1:17:57Collegiate starter even called that's trying to salvage a
- 1:18:01career because of concussions. Exactly, which is just so we
- 1:18:05don't know if Charlie was going to be starting by the next to
- 1:18:08last week in the season but more so with Liberty is all right, we
- 1:18:15saw what they did in 2020. Yeah, we lost one.
- 1:18:18We saw, they had a great season. They didn't have a great season
- 1:18:22last year. They were they were fine.
- 1:18:25They were okay, but they weren't doing or not doing.
- 1:18:29I think some people a rhythmic if they, if they were in a power
- 1:18:32five district, they'd be a Flirtin With the bowl.
- 1:18:36They'd be somewhere between five wins and maybe seven wins and be
- 1:18:39there up Grand last year last year with Miley.
- 1:18:42Those with Malik Willis. All right.
- 1:18:45So then UVA obviously they're going through their own coaching
- 1:18:50change. Lot of kids in the portal
- 1:18:52Armstrong's back. Yes.
- 1:18:56So I think they so that they won't have the same offensive
- 1:19:00line they had last year, but they've at least stop the
- 1:19:04hemorrhaging of offensive lineman that they were having
- 1:19:06with some of the signings that they had.
- 1:19:10But I think the overall Talent level is a step back.
- 1:19:12Now, we'll see you your to Jake and get them turned around
- 1:19:17really quick, but I think you definitely see a step back and
- 1:19:21offensive line play for UVA. I don't think they have a quick
- 1:19:24fix for that defense. So I mean, it's still going to
- 1:19:27be the Brandon Armstrong show and they had.
- 1:19:32I hope that works at least for the 2022 year.
- 1:19:35I figure exactly. All right, Brian.
- 1:19:38So there's the AC sketch that's are just an initial thoughts,
- 1:19:41obviously, as we get deeper, Deeper into the season and get
- 1:19:44closer to the season. We will do what we did last year
- 1:19:48game by game. Thought process.
- 1:19:51While we get our records you got a gut feeling that the Gate of
- 1:19:55how many you think we get. I don't honestly won't because I
- 1:20:01sit here and I think most important positions quarterback
- 1:20:04right there to me Jason or Wells, or better quarterbacks in
- 1:20:12Braxton was I think we're at least gonna get.
- 1:20:18Yes. Well I feel like you know we're
- 1:20:20going to talk about it in two weeks when we me and Robbie
- 1:20:23break down the both sides of the ball.
- 1:20:27But the competency of the of the play calling, I feel like is
- 1:20:31going to be significantly higher from what I've seen so far in
- 1:20:34the tape. I've watched so far so y'all can
- 1:20:39that's my teaser for two weeks from now.
- 1:20:41Y'all look forward to that. But I think that alone, even if
- 1:20:46you talked about the same Talent level coming back, you know that
- 1:20:49probably gets this one or two wins in the other direction now.
- 1:20:55I think we probably at least initially Talent.
- 1:20:59Why's it taking a step back on defense?
- 1:21:01So we'll see if if the pride factor is able to offset, that
- 1:21:06may be so, so we'll see. But I mean, if I had to go gut,
- 1:21:09I'm saying that somewhere between Five and seven.
- 1:21:13I think we might could get if you told me right now we get
- 1:21:16six, I'd be happy with that and that's based on the roster as
- 1:21:22it's constructive. Now, ask me again, once we have
- 1:21:25the next big portal and portal out after the, the spring game.
- 1:21:30Well, why don't we talk about the spring game?
- 1:21:33Because heck spring game, April 16th at 4:00, we could see
- 1:21:38something there and you could look at me and be like, did I
- 1:21:40say six? Higher higher or lower, but
- 1:21:46springing, April. 16th 4 p.m. will be on SEC network.
- 1:21:52You mean, it's going to be a SEC network and people can go in
- 1:21:55person. Yes, they can.
- 1:21:57What a novel fucking concept crazy, our current status for
- 1:22:01that game is TVD because we have weddings around the same time
- 1:22:08where you're going to be out of town a couple weekends, I'm
- 1:22:11gonna be out of town. Couple weekends in.
- 1:22:13Sometimes as you grow up to be an adult to ask to go out of
- 1:22:18town again, it doesn't fly all the time but either way we're
- 1:22:23going. What we're what we want to do is
- 1:22:25we want to get probably a quick hitting episode live from a
- 1:22:29tailgate at the spring game. We're hoping that happens.
- 1:22:35Obviously there's there's still some moving parts to that but we
- 1:22:39will let you know as soon as we both have.
- 1:22:41We've been given the green light both from our own mindsets and
- 1:22:46from our wives there's your key right there.
- 1:22:50Now let's talk about this. Braun spring.
- 1:22:53Practices are going to start March 18th in something that cry
- 1:22:58talked about. During the presser really caught
- 1:23:00my ear. He talked about those opening
- 1:23:02days of spring, practice aren't really practice days.
- 1:23:08Um, say this today, like the 18th 19th and 20th.
- 1:23:11Like installation days more step.
- 1:23:14Then hard-hitting practice days. What does that tell you?
- 1:23:17Do you think this is like his Norm?
- 1:23:19Or is this just this is brand-new here and I have to do
- 1:23:25it this way this year. Well I think you probably I
- 1:23:29don't know if we get as many practices but you're going to
- 1:23:31spend a good deal of practices out the gate especially in
- 1:23:34spring with installation, you know, you're bringing along more
- 1:23:38than likely some new Shman, obviously that have just
- 1:23:43enrolled, you're bringing along freshman at redshirting the
- 1:23:46previous year that probably ran more of the other teams Playbook
- 1:23:51than they ever got to look at our own teams play books.
- 1:23:54So the level of installation is going to be something like that
- 1:23:56out, the gate, regardless, it's always a good refresher to get
- 1:23:59some of the veterans back into that mindset as well.
- 1:24:04You know, there are there are some guys only team, you know,
- 1:24:07particularly a quarterback that almost has to do this.
- 1:24:10But then other position guys. That kind of really they soak up
- 1:24:14the Playbook. It's in their head unless it's a
- 1:24:17new play or something or another wrinkle.
- 1:24:19That the coordinators adding to the offense, they've got that
- 1:24:23shit in the memory bank and then there's other guys that they
- 1:24:25have to get those reps to really have that muscle memory.
- 1:24:29So that's why you do things like that, with installation because
- 1:24:32there's there's two guys that learn differently that our
- 1:24:35veterans and you got to bring those young guys along as well.
- 1:24:38Makes sense. 15 total practices. Brian will be the amount and
- 1:24:45starting the 18th are starting a little bit later than the old
- 1:24:49staff did for whatever reason. I think maybe a couple of it is
- 1:24:55I'd have to look but Tech Spring break is probably somewhere in
- 1:25:02that neighborhood. Maybe it's that we're going to
- 1:25:05wait a few days till they're back from spring break to get
- 1:25:07them into. It makes a lot of sense to me.
- 1:25:12But there are two new rules that have been passed concerning
- 1:25:15spring practice. The first is going to limit
- 1:25:19full-contact to no more than 75 minutes of a non scrimmage
- 1:25:23practice. What does that say to you?
- 1:25:25And you hear those words like that.
- 1:25:31I think it's good and bad, you know, I think we talked about 75
- 1:25:36minutes, no more than that for non scrimmage practice.
- 1:25:39You don't want guys getting beat up during the Spring but you
- 1:25:42also want to make sure that they are hitting your in the spring
- 1:25:44because that's when you get to do a lot more with fundamentals.
- 1:25:47You get to do a lot more with install, but if you're going to
- 1:25:52run install, you need to sometimes get that going full
- 1:25:55speed as well. So I don't, I don't hate it from
- 1:26:01a long-term Health perspective, but it gets you probably a
- 1:26:04little less out of some of those practices.
- 1:26:07Then you didn't even want I got you.
- 1:26:11I got what you mean by that. Um, I want to say used to be 90,
- 1:26:15so down about 15 minutes that is a lot of time.
- 1:26:20Overall I think again. I get like you've got to get
- 1:26:25physical because that is the nature of this game, but it's
- 1:26:29also if we're looking at a safety thing, which is going to
- 1:26:32go more and more to like, what's 15 minutes really?
- 1:26:36What's 15 minutes? What can you do that?
- 1:26:38You can't do in 75 now, the other one, this is a super
- 1:26:42interesting one, because They are going to be banning
- 1:26:46full-contact from occurring on two consecutive spring days.
- 1:26:52So basically no back-to-back pads, which obviously going to
- 1:26:56save some on the body, but also tells me there, it's going to
- 1:27:01probably be a thing for coaches. Like you now have to be really
- 1:27:05smart of how you plan these things out, right?
- 1:27:08Yep. Yeah.
- 1:27:09I think they're going to change how they probably do the their
- 1:27:14practices. They're going to be Periods
- 1:27:18where they that they don't include on the days where they
- 1:27:21can hit and there's going to be certain periods that they
- 1:27:24include only on days that they're going full pads.
- 1:27:28So yeah, I think that'll just change how they're going to
- 1:27:31structure those practices based on which periods in which
- 1:27:35specific drills and things are done on a given day.
- 1:27:40So, again, some new rules of the coaches have to abide by and
- 1:27:45live with. I think we're lucky in the sense
- 1:27:47that Brent prize a new coach, he new head coach.
- 1:27:52You can say, well, he's been at Penn State and they've been
- 1:27:54doing certain things, certain ways, coolest, part is, he gets
- 1:27:57hired as a head coach, he gets to put this together and then
- 1:28:00they say, well, you can't do this anymore, cool.
- 1:28:02Well, I was writing my plan out anyway and I can just take that
- 1:28:06into account for look forward to, which is a really great
- 1:28:09thing. First of all, right, before we
- 1:28:11get ready for our last segment here.
- 1:28:13Hokies up. Thirteen.
- 1:28:14Fifty seconds, left pastner in the punchable face and his
- 1:28:19stupid looking sideburns is he's like, he took a timeout down,
- 1:28:2513. I mean, we've seen, we saw
- 1:28:29Reggie Miller do the impossible one time.
- 1:28:34But come on man. Yep, I don't think that's going
- 1:28:37to happen. I did confirm actually their
- 1:28:40spring break ends March 13th, so that they're essentially giving
- 1:28:43them a few days to get back in the swing and then going full
- 1:28:48bore. But, but think about the genius
- 1:28:51of, they're probably going to do two or three days at weekend,
- 1:28:53right? Yep.
- 1:28:55Friday, Saturday, or Friday, Saturday, Sunday, huge
- 1:28:59installation program to start it right off the bat.
- 1:29:03We're the guys. We are back in the swing versus
- 1:29:05you know, doing it 2:14-15, middle of the week, you know, to
- 1:29:11me. It doesn't make sense.
- 1:29:13Alright Braun. There is essentially one game
- 1:29:17left in this football season and it is the CP available.
- 1:29:23And unfortunately. You got one guy that's not happy
- 1:29:28on this on this podcast or less happy much less happy for
- 1:29:34myself. It is not the same for Cisco.
- 1:29:3749ers with our Guy Darryl Tapp helping them out.
- 1:29:43It's the Rams and it's the Bengals.
- 1:29:48Thankfully, it's the Bengals. Yeah, because there are certain
- 1:29:52things we don't have to see leading up to that game.
- 1:29:55That pretty much as a Sporting Community, unless you live in
- 1:30:00Kansas City, no one wants to see Jackson the homes, not nobody.
- 1:30:07Nobody really wants to see Brittany either but definitely
- 1:30:10nobody wants to see Jackson homes, definitely - you Jackson
- 1:30:13so bingle's Rams on or off of mechanical bull.
- 1:30:18I said on or off a mechanical bull.
- 1:30:22I don't know if you saw that video this week and not see that
- 1:30:25videos this weekend, okay, but this game, we're not going to be
- 1:30:31spread here, but I just want to see what the line is.
- 1:30:34Rams are four point favorites. 49 and a half over under.
- 1:30:40Will let you do the saving because I can't right now.
- 1:30:44What do you think on this game, Brian?
- 1:30:47He got and I know we're really a long ways out, so people get
- 1:30:52hurt. You can always take your bed
- 1:30:54away. Yeah, I'm going to go, I'm going
- 1:31:00to go Bangles. You know, I think that that
- 1:31:05defense does a good job of keeping them in there.
- 1:31:07I think there's a little bit more fight in in the Bangles
- 1:31:16will see if they can hang with that defensive line because
- 1:31:21that's really the only thing that concerns me is that
- 1:31:24defensive line, getting after burrow, and causing Havoc,
- 1:31:28because the Bangles almost don't have an offensive line.
- 1:31:33But if they're able to slow them down enough for Borough to cook,
- 1:31:37I think they could be onto something.
- 1:31:39All right. Interesting call Hokies win by
- 1:31:43the way. Let's see if we can meet like
- 1:31:46nine in a row going to the tournament next month.
- 1:31:50Um, I'm completely against you. I think the Rams are going to
- 1:31:55win this game. I think it's going to be a seven
- 1:31:57and nine point win and it's exactly what you just said, it's
- 1:32:01defensive line versus offensive line.
- 1:32:04And that is a bad offensive line.
- 1:32:09No, if ands or buts about it and let's go through.
- 1:32:14It does Kansas City have an elite defensive line.
- 1:32:17Now does the Titans have an events in Italy defensive line I
- 1:32:22would say above average but not Elite.
- 1:32:24Now Do the Raiders know? So how they got here is they
- 1:32:31play three teams without Elite defensive lines?
- 1:32:35If I think Aaron Donald and Von Miller going to just eat all
- 1:32:39night and where most teams don't have that, one lockdown Corner,
- 1:32:44Jalen range is just going to follow you more Chase all over
- 1:32:46the field. I think Jamal Chase is going to
- 1:32:48get his but I think Jalen's probably going to be able to
- 1:32:52limit them enough. And I think personally that
- 1:32:57defense is good, not great. Eight.
- 1:32:59And I think our defense is great.
- 1:33:03And we held that team to 20 points and we have an elite
- 1:33:07defensive line. We have right, borderline Elite
- 1:33:11linebacker. Play our back end is a little
- 1:33:13bit struggling, but are back in. I think so.
- 1:33:16But I think this game is like 3526, I think the Rams are going
- 1:33:21to score it will end its. Is it funny for me being the
- 1:33:26West in the NFC West guy and I'm not paying to see the rims win
- 1:33:29because Stafford. Like they have their a-holes on
- 1:33:35that team but they also have like good guys, like, you know,
- 1:33:42Yeah, I get you. I get you.
- 1:33:44Yeah. So, bronze on the Bengals.
- 1:33:48I'm on the Rams, I'll grab the Bangles for now.
- 1:33:51Like I said, I'll, I'll re-evaluate a little bit but my
- 1:33:57gut listen. That's pretty freaking funny.
- 1:34:33That's great. All right.
