- 0:24Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:28Amen. Open your Bibles.
- 0:30Exodus chapter 25 is where we are.
- 0:34Exodus chapter 25 we're going to pick up where we left off last
- 0:39time. Looking at the Tabernacle and
- 0:42the furniture of the Tabernacle being built.
- 0:45I've entitled our Bible study, Glimpses of the Gospel.
- 0:49The Tabernacle was to be the central point of worship for the
- 0:52children of Israel through the wilderness.
- 0:55It was a portable tent that would be dismantled, packed up,
- 1:00taken along. When they stopped, they'd
- 1:02rebuild it and it would be the center of camp.
- 1:05When the Lord told them to stop, they would bring it out,
- 1:08assemble it, and then gather around it until God told them to
- 1:12move forward. And what God is doing in this
- 1:14nation is bringing them into a new relationship with Himself.
- 1:18He's established His covenant with them.
- 1:21They've ratified it. Now walking through it, they're
- 1:25going to learn how no longer to live as slaves, but they have a
- 1:28brand new way of life where they're going to learn to follow
- 1:32God. They're going to have a pillar
- 1:34of fire by night and a cloud by day.
- 1:37They're going to learn how to follow God.
- 1:40And remember, they're going to meet God where?
- 1:43On the lid of the Ark of the Covenant.
- 1:46We learned that last time. They're going to meet him on the
- 1:48mercy seat. He says that's where I'll meet
- 1:51with you, where the blood is spread, where sin is forgiven,
- 1:55not in the ark we studied this last time.
- 1:58He's not going to meet them in the ark, where the law of the
- 2:01commandments will be, but on it. And a careful study, even just
- 2:06through the book of Genesis, you will learn how God walks with
- 2:11his people. I'll jot them down quickly for
- 2:13you and I'll share what they say, but in Genesis chapter 3
- 2:16verse 8, it says that the sound of the Lord God was walking in
- 2:20the garden in the cool of the day.
- 2:23Genesis 522 Enoch walked with God.
- 2:27Genesis 69, Noah walked with God.
- 2:30Genesis 17 one God says I am almighty God, walk before me and
- 2:36be blameless to Abram. Genesis 4815, Abraham and Isaac
- 2:42walked, the God who has fed me all my life, God before whom my
- 2:48father's Abraham and Isaac walked.
- 2:50But now God is adding to that, that He will dwell with them.
- 2:55Remember back in verse 8 of chapter 25 from walking.
- 3:00Now they'll be dwelling in verse 8.
- 3:02Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell with them.
- 3:08And we learned that this is looking forward to Messiah.
- 3:13John chapter one, verse 14. The word became flesh and dwelt
- 3:17or tabernacled among us in our study last time we learned and
- 3:22we're reminded just how good God is that the best way in living
- 3:26our life is to be responsive to the grace of God, to know what
- 3:31he has done, to remember he's the initiator.
- 3:35We are the responders. How He has been so generous and
- 3:40so gracious to us, meeting us not in the ark, but on the ark.
- 3:45If you weren't here, you should catch up at least with that one.
- 3:48It'll bless you and encourage you and remind you.
- 3:50Now pick up with me in verse 23 as we get to the next piece of
- 3:54furniture, the table of showbread.
- 3:56You should also make a table of Acacia wood. 2 cubits shall be
- 4:00it's length, a cubit, it's width, A cubit, and a half it's
- 4:03height. You shall overlay it with pure
- 4:05gold and make a molding of gold all around.
- 4:08You shall make it for a frame, a hand breath all around, and you
- 4:12shall make a gold molding for the frame all around.
- 4:15You shall make for it four rings of gold and put the rings in the
- 4:18four corners that are at its four legs.
- 4:21The ring shall be close to the frame as holders for the poles
- 4:24to bear the table. Verse 28.
- 4:27You shall make the poles of Acacia wood, overlay them with
- 4:30gold, that the table may be carried with them.
- 4:33You shall make its dishes, its pans, its pitchers, its bowls
- 4:36for pouring. You shall make them of pure
- 4:39gold. And you shall set the showbread
- 4:42on the table before me always 36 inches by 18 inches wide, 22
- 4:49inches high. This table overlay with pure
- 4:54gold with a molding around it four rings of gold with with
- 4:59poles that are overlaid with gold dishes made of pure gold.
- 5:04And on the table would be 12 loaves of bread, changed every
- 5:09Sabbath, eaten by the priest family.
- 5:13And the bread itself reminds us of Messiah.
- 5:16Another glimpse of the Gospel because the bread reminds us of
- 5:20that teaching of Jesus where he declares himself in John 6 to be
- 5:24what? The bread of life, the
- 5:28importance of sustenance. Listen, it says in verse 32.
- 5:32Then Jesus said to them, This is John 6.
- 5:35Most assuredly I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread
- 5:39from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
- 5:44For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives
- 5:48life to the world. And of course he's referring to
- 5:50the manna here. It was such a miraculous gift of
- 5:54food and sustenance. He's like, look that that don't
- 5:57think of Moses giving you the bread from heaven.
- 6:01He says, for the bread of God is he.
- 6:04The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life
- 6:09to the world. And they said, Well, Lord, give
- 6:11us this bread. And Jesus said, I am the bread
- 6:14of life. He who comes to me shall never
- 6:17hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.
- 6:21But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe
- 6:26as a cross, cross reference here in Leviticus chapter 24,
- 6:30beginning in around in verse 5, we're told that the bread had to
- 6:33be made a certain way that go back to or go forward to
- 6:37Leviticus. Notice with me in chapter 24,
- 6:40the bread had to be made a certain way.
- 6:43So Genesis, Exodus, the very next book is Leviticus.
- 6:48You know, the one you skip during your reading program.
- 6:51Let's come back to it. Leviticus chapter 24 A lot of
- 6:54Nuggets. Lot of great things to learn in
- 6:57Leviticus. Notice with me in verse 5 there
- 6:59is a very prescribed way that the priest were to be making
- 7:03this bread for the table of showbread.
- 7:05It says and you shall take fine flour and bake 12 cakes with it.
- 7:092/10 of an efaw shall be in each cake.
- 7:12You shall set them in two rows, six in a row, in the pure table.
- 7:17On the pure table before the Lord.
- 7:20You shall put pure frankincense on each row, that it may be on
- 7:24the bread for a memorial, an offering made by fire to the
- 7:28Lord. Every Sabbath.
- 7:29Set it in order before the Lord, continually being taken from the
- 7:33children of Israel by an everlasting covenant, and it
- 7:37shall be for Aaron and his sons, that they shall eat it in a holy
- 7:41place, for it is most holy to him from the offerings of the
- 7:44Lord made by fire by a perpetual statute.
- 7:48Fine flour. This flour was to be ground.
- 7:52Fine. And again, Speaking of the
- 7:54teachings of Jesus in John 12, verse 24.
- 7:57Most assuredly I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls
- 8:01into the ground and dies, it remains alone.
- 8:04But if it dies, it produces much grain, and Jesus dying only to
- 8:10bring much fruit from his life, even as the grain to bring much
- 8:16sustenance to the priests and be an offering to the Lord, this
- 8:20dying, this grain that needs to die.
- 8:22I was reminded that this is an issue for everyone listening to
- 8:26me right now. This is an issue.
- 8:27This may be the issue in your life.
- 8:30You go, what is it, Ed? I've been waiting somebody to
- 8:32tell me what is the big issue? What's my big problem?
- 8:35Let me share with you what what most likely your big problem is.
- 8:39You ready? I don't see anybody ready to
- 8:41write this down. I don't see anybody riding on
- 8:43their wrist. But I'm going to give it to you
- 8:44because this is a big one. This is something we battle and
- 8:47grapple with, causing most of the problems in our lives.
- 8:50You ready? You guys ready?
- 8:53I can hear people online louder than you.
- 8:55Are you ready? Yes.
- 8:56Yes. Here it is.
- 8:57Dying to self. Dying to self.
- 9:01We are people that like to call to ourselves, take care of
- 9:07ourselves. We like to cling to our agendas,
- 9:11have things done our way. We want to control the
- 9:15narrative, be in control, call the shots, pull the strings, and
- 9:19in so doing, we live very little productive life.
- 9:24We produce very little in the spirit.
- 9:27Even today as I woke up and I was meditating on this thought,
- 9:30I was just thinking, you know, unfaithfulness is not something
- 9:34that the Spirit of God produces in our lives.
- 9:37And you can go on with that list.
- 9:38There's some things in your life that you could say, Oh no, no,
- 9:40unfaithfulness. This is something in my life.
- 9:42And you could say the Spirit of God did not produce that in my
- 9:45life. That is not reflective of a
- 9:47surrendered life, not reflective of a life that has given up
- 9:52their rights, not reflective of the very foundation.
- 9:55This isn't even Christianity like 2O one or three O 1.
- 9:59This isn't like a college level course Christianity.
- 10:02This this isn't. You got to be mature for 40
- 10:04years to understand this. This is step one in following
- 10:08Jesus. If anyone desires to come after
- 10:11me, Jesus said he must what? Deny himself, Take up his cross,
- 10:17then he can follow me. And it becomes one of the
- 10:20biggest battles in our lives. So much so that we don't even
- 10:23pay attention to it anymore. Now it is, well, this is my
- 10:27rights and this is what I deserve and this is what I want
- 10:31and this is what I've earned. And we're not in any way denying
- 10:34ourselves or we create our lives in such a way where we get to
- 10:38pick and choose, at least we think, where we deny ourselves
- 10:42and then call that and then we offer up to God.
- 10:43Look what I've given you, look what I've sacrificed, look what
- 10:46I've given up for you. Really, really, it was Roy
- 10:51Hessian that wrote in the book, that little book, that pick of
- 10:54the month that we mentioned from time to time, Calvary Rd.
- 10:57Listen to what he said and I quote, people imagine that dying
- 11:01to self makes one miserable, but it's just the opposite.
- 11:05It's the refusal to die to self that makes one miserable.
- 11:09The more we know of death with him, the more we shall know of
- 11:12his life in us. So the more real peace and joy,
- 11:17his life too will overflow through us to lost souls in real
- 11:21concern for their salvation, and to our fellow Christians in a
- 11:25deep desire for their blessing. For the bread to be on the
- 11:30table, the grain needed to die to produce more grain.
- 11:35The grain then that was harvested would be crushed in
- 11:38the fine flower. And I see in that such a
- 11:41beautiful picture of dying to self in Galatians chapter 5 and
- 11:46verse 24. Those who are of Christ have
- 11:48crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
- 11:52If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
- 11:56Galatians chapter 6, verse 14. These will be our studies in the
- 12:00future in Galatians. But in 614.
- 12:02But God forbid that I should boast, except in the cross of
- 12:07our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to
- 12:11me and I to the world. There is to be in the Tabernacle
- 12:16a table of showbread with 12 loaves, the frankincense there,
- 12:20an offering to the Lord, pointing them and us to Jesus
- 12:24Christ, the bread of life, reminding us the value of dying
- 12:28to ourselves. I'm most effective and I'm most
- 12:31fruitful. I'm most reproductive in my
- 12:34life. If like that grain, I'm put into
- 12:36the ground, and I die, and then an abundance comes out of my
- 12:41life, notice with me. Verse 31.
- 12:46You shall make a lampstand of pure gold.
- 12:49The lampstand shall be of hammered work.
- 12:51Its shaft, its branches, its bowls, its ornamental knobs and
- 12:55flower shall be of one piece, and six branches shall come out
- 12:59of its sides. 3 branches of the lampstand out of one side, 3
- 13:02branches of the lampstand out of the other side.
- 13:06Three bowls shall be made like almond blossoms on one branch,
- 13:10with an ornamental knob and a flower, Three bowls made like
- 13:14the almond blossoms on the other branch with an ornamental knob
- 13:18and a flower. And so for the six branches that
- 13:20come out of the lampstand. On the lampstand itself, 4 bowls
- 13:24shall be made of like almond blossoms, each with its
- 13:27ornamental knob and flower. And there shall be a knob under
- 13:31the first two branches of the same, a knob under the second,
- 13:34two branches of the same, a knob under the third, two branches of
- 13:37the same. According to the six branches
- 13:40that extend from the lampstand, their knobs and their branches
- 13:44shall be of one piece. All of it shall be of 1 hammered
- 13:47piece of pure gold. And you shall make 7 lamps for
- 13:50it. And they shall arrange its lamps
- 13:52so that they give light in front of it, and it's Wick trimmers,
- 13:56and their trays shall be of pure gold.
- 13:58It shall be made of one talent of pure gold with all these
- 14:02utensils. And see to it that you make them
- 14:05according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.
- 14:10Made of pure gold, but hammered 6 branches through and each
- 14:13side, each branch would have a bowl on the lampstand. 4 bowls,
- 14:17knobs under each of the branches, all of one piece, 7
- 14:20lamps for it, all of one piece. And follow the precise pattern
- 14:24which we'll pause from now and then.
- 14:25But it's a good moment to just stop and say, now wait a minute,
- 14:29why all the knobs and why the bowls and why the why?
- 14:33And the answer is very simple. The answer is extremely simple.
- 14:38It's not as theological as you might think.
- 14:40Nothing hidden in the answer. Here's the answer.
- 14:42Why make it this way? Because God said so.
- 14:46This is what He said. This is His lampstand, not
- 14:50yours, not mine. This is His Tabernacle.
- 14:53Not only that, but it would point toward Messiah.
- 14:56Don't mess with it, we would be told later on.
- 14:59Do not add or take away from His Word.
- 15:02Why? Because it's His Word.
- 15:04What do you and I have to add to the perfection in the will of
- 15:07God? Nothing.
- 15:09Don't. Sometimes in life this may be a
- 15:11word from the Lord for someone, but sometimes in life you just
- 15:14need to do what you're told because that's what you were
- 15:16told. This is going to obey the Lord
- 15:20because that's what he said. Or perhaps somebody in authority
- 15:24overused because what he said, that's what she said.
- 15:28Precise, direct. We're not told of the exact
- 15:33dimensions here, but the weight of that gold was about £75.
- 15:38It was no doubt very beautiful and bright as it kept burning
- 15:43constantly by the oil that would be contained in the bowls.
- 15:47This would be the only source of light in the Tabernacle, even as
- 15:53Jesus is the only source of light to the world today.
- 15:58Philosophy of men do not provide light to the world.
- 16:01No guru, no religious system offers any light at all.
- 16:06No new TikTok video or some guy that pops up on YouTube provides
- 16:11light to the world, only Jesus. Turn with me to John chapter 8.
- 16:16I want you to see John chapter 8 and we'll listen to our Savior's
- 16:20teaching from His own lips in John chapter 8.
- 16:24When you get there, jump to verse 10 with me as Jesus as
- 16:30speaking and He gives insight as he speaks of this sense of the
- 16:38condemnation of a surrounding this woman caught in sin.
- 16:41Notice when Jesus has raised himself, raised himself up,
- 16:44verse 10 saw no one but the woman, He said to her, woman,
- 16:47where are those accusers of yours?
- 16:50Has no one condemned you? And she said no one Lord, and
- 16:54Jesus said to her, neither do I come in you go and condemn you
- 16:58go and send no more. And then Jesus spoke to them
- 17:01again, saying, I am the light of the world.
- 17:05He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light
- 17:11of life. Jesus providing this woman who
- 17:17was set up by the religious rulers to trip to trap Jesus.
- 17:24And his response? Hey, look, where are your
- 17:28accusers? They're gone.
- 17:30You know, I'm not condemning you either.
- 17:33This is your turning point. This is the hinge of your life.
- 17:36From this moment forward, you you, you live a different life.
- 17:41You have your encounter with me. It's really all Jesus saying you
- 17:45this encounter right here is just set you free.
- 17:48You're a new woman and those that are around.
- 17:51Whoa, how, what? How could you say that knowing
- 17:55the law, knowing the penalty of someone caught in adultery?
- 17:57What? And Jesus answer is epic.
- 18:01Hey guys, I'm the light of the world.
- 18:04You follow me. All the darkness, all the
- 18:07tripping, all the falling, all the different.
- 18:10You follow me and I'm going to give you the truth that you need
- 18:13to live in a Dark World. And the truth that we learned
- 18:16right here with this woman, which could be a Bible study in
- 18:18and of itself, is there is no condemnation for those that are
- 18:22in Christ, for those that love Him, called according to His
- 18:27purpose. This beautiful lamp with the
- 18:30branches coming out on either side reminds us of Jesus and the
- 18:35light that He provides. But not only that, turn over to
- 18:38John 15. Now notice in John 15, the
- 18:44children of Israel don't have the full picture yet.
- 18:46They're only getting glimpses. It's a lot like your Christian
- 18:50life, isn't it? When you're saved, you don't
- 18:52know everything right away, and you just get little by little by
- 18:55little. And then you look back in one
- 18:57truth and go, ah, now I get it, now I understand it.
- 19:01The children of Israel getting insights and pictures pointing
- 19:04forward. Notice in John 15 in verse 5 it
- 19:08says, I am the vine and you are the branches.
- 19:11He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for without me
- 19:15you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me,
- 19:19he is cast out as a branch and is withered.
- 19:22And they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they're
- 19:24burned. But if you abide in me, verse 7,
- 19:26and my words abide in you, you'll ask what you desire, and
- 19:30it'll be done for you. This by this my Father is
- 19:32glorified that you bear much fruit.
- 19:35So you'll be my disciples branches in the vine.
- 19:41And I find it interesting that the Candlestick was made of one
- 19:44piece. That's that permanence.
- 19:48When you are in Christ, there's a permanence.
- 19:51Peter would say we are kept by the power of God.
- 19:55He keeps us by his power. The lamp would also stand as a
- 19:59reminder to the Jewish people that they were to be a light to
- 20:02the Gentiles, that they were to be a light to the Gentiles as a
- 20:06truth dating back to the garden and God's heart to reach
- 20:10everyone. But in Isaiah 42 verse one it
- 20:12says, behold my servant whom I have a hold.
- 20:15My elect, one in whom my soul delights, I will put my spirit
- 20:20upon him, and he'll bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
- 20:24That teaching is still to come. How is this possible?
- 20:29The lampstand was not in the outer court of the Tabernacle,
- 20:32but hidden inside. How is the light to shine to
- 20:35everyone? How can a light that's hidden
- 20:37shine to the world? But the lamp in the holy place
- 20:40represented a personal devotion and relationship with God.
- 20:45It would be in their personal service and sacrifice and
- 20:48worship that they would become a light to the world, their
- 20:51distinction, their difference. Jesus reminding us, I'm leaving
- 20:58you in the world, but you're not of the world.
- 21:01You are not like the world. You have been saved from the
- 21:05world. And that's truly the measure of
- 21:07our witness to our personal worship and devotion is very
- 21:11seen. It's very obvious.
- 21:15It's not that you have to quote me verses or tell me what you
- 21:17read this morning. We'll be able to see it.
- 21:20We'll be able to watch it. Out of the abundance of the
- 21:23heart, the mouth speaks. We'll begin to see through your
- 21:27behavior, what you believe in, the intimacy that you have with
- 21:29the Father, how you treat one another.
- 21:33You bosses, your employees know about your worship and devotion
- 21:36life. They know.
- 21:39And you employees, your bosses know.
- 21:43Your bosses know you may not be able to admit it, you may not be
- 21:47willing to admit where you are right now or what.
- 21:49But your bosses know. Your coworkers know.
- 21:52There is a view how we handle the issues of life.
- 21:58Parents, your kids know your devotion, life, your spouse,
- 22:04your roommate, the person that lives above you in the
- 22:09apartment, they hear you or not. We, at least Marie and I lived
- 22:14in an apartment for 10 years in the beginning of our marriage,
- 22:17and the walls were so paper thin on one side or the other.
- 22:22And certainly our neighbors scratch their heads sometimes at
- 22:27those Christians living out their life and wrestling with
- 22:31the realities of life with kids and family and such.
- 22:37It's interesting to me that as we look at the first three
- 22:40pieces of furniture in the Tabernacle, how they give us a
- 22:44glimpse of the Trinity. Again, a teaching revealed
- 22:48throughout the Scriptures, the mercy seat, the place and the
- 22:51presence of God the Father. It's where he'd meet.
- 22:54It's where he'd meet. The table of showbread speaking
- 22:56to us of Jesus, the Bread of Life, and the menorah filled
- 23:00with oil that's burning continually Speaking of the Holy
- 23:05Spirit. God has revealed Himself, Church
- 23:09as we see and pay attention to Him, open to a work of the
- 23:12Spirit. Notice verse 1 of chapter 26.
- 23:15Now the curtains. Moreover, you shall make the
- 23:18Tabernacle with 10 curtains of woven fine linen thread, blue
- 23:22and purple and scarlet yarn, artistic designs of cherubim.
- 23:26You shall weave them. The length of each curtain shall
- 23:28be 28 cubits, the width of each curtain 4 cubits, and every one
- 23:32of the curtains shall have the same measurements.
- 23:35Five curtains shall be coupled to one another.
- 23:37The other five curtains shall be coupled to one another.
- 23:40And you shall make loops of blue yarn on the edge of the curtain
- 23:44on the selvage of one set, and likewise you shall do on this
- 23:48outer edge of the other curtain of the second set.
- 23:52Verse 550 Loops you shall make in one curtain, and 50 loops you
- 23:56shall make on the edge of the curtain that is on the end of
- 23:59the second set, that the loops may be collapsed to one another.
- 24:04You shall make 50 clasps of gold and couple the curtains together
- 24:08with the clap so that it may be one Tabernacle.
- 24:11You should also make curtains of goat's hair to be a tent over
- 24:16the Tabernacle. And you shall make 11 curtains.
- 24:20The length of each curtain shall be 30 cubits.
- 24:23The witch of each curtain, 4 cubits, and 11 curtains shall
- 24:26all have the same measurement. So let's begin with the inward
- 24:30curtains. The inside the linen. 10
- 24:33curtains, fine woven linen, blue, purple and scarlet thread.
- 24:37Angels woven into them. 40 feet long, 15 feet long 40 by 15.
- 24:43Five coupled together with the other five coupled together
- 24:47loops of blue on the edge. 50 loops so they clasp together. 50
- 24:52clapses of gold so it can be put together.
- 24:54So the inside the linen curtains were two huge curtains made of
- 24:58five each held together with 50 clasps of gold.
- 25:03Four colors were used, white, blue, purple, and scarlet.
- 25:07Blue speaks of the color of heaven.
- 25:10Purple speaks of royalty, scarlet speaks to us in the
- 25:14scriptures of sacrifice, and the white linen speaks of humanity.
- 25:19Remember, this is what the priest would see as he would
- 25:23come in to perform the sacrifices.
- 25:27Now as you begin to think about the gospels and how they portray
- 25:30the life of Christ, each gospel has a emphasis giving us an
- 25:36aspect of Jesus. Matthew speaks to us of Jesus as
- 25:40the King of Kings, and what color would that be?
- 25:43Purple, The King of kings. Mark speaks to us of Jesus as
- 25:48the suffering servant. Suffering servant, What color
- 25:53would that be? Scarlet?
- 25:56Speaking of suffering and sacrifice, Luke would portray to
- 25:59us Jesus in his perfect humanity, representing white.
- 26:04John describes Jesus in his powerful deity, high and lifted
- 26:08up, which could be represented by the blue.
- 26:13We see glimpses of the Gospel story woven together within the
- 26:17precise linen that the priest would see every day.
- 26:20They would be reminded of the absolute covering of God,
- 26:25including the angels woven into the curtains, 20 of them
- 26:29reminding the priests of God's care and attention.
- 26:32Of course, angels would be very active in the life of Jesus.
- 26:36They would be ministering spirits both to Him, and we
- 26:40learned this in Hebrews to us to imagine that God would use this
- 26:45supernatural created being to be used.
- 26:50They were there when Jesus was tempted in Matthew 4.
- 26:53They comforted him in the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 26:56They were available to Jesus. Remember when Jesus tells him to
- 26:59put down your sword. This isn't that time.
- 27:03Don't you know I could call legions of angels.
- 27:04They're at my beckon call. Jesus says, but that's not what
- 27:09I came for. They come into there in the the
- 27:12whole inside of the Tabernacle or speaking by prophecy, giving
- 27:18and glimpses of the Gospel glimpses of Jesus Christ.
- 27:22And then there's a second layer, these goats hair.
- 27:25We read about them beginning in verse 7.
- 27:27These curtains of goats hair, it's going to be a tent over the
- 27:31Tabernacle. There's going to be 11 curtains,
- 27:35not ten, but 11. The length.
- 27:38Verse 8 of each curtain shall be 30 cubits and 11 curtains shall
- 27:42be have all the same measurements and you shall
- 27:44couple 5 by themselves and six by themselves.
- 27:48Double over the 6th curtain at the forefront of the tent.
- 27:52You shall make 50 loops on the edge of the curtain that is the
- 27:56outermost in one set, and 50 loops on the edge of the curtain
- 27:59of the second set, and you shall make 50 bronze clasps.
- 28:04Put the clasp into the loops. Couple the tent together, that
- 28:07it may be 1 the remnant that remains.
- 28:10Verse 12 of the curtains of the tent.
- 28:11The half curtain that remains shall hang over the back of the
- 28:14Tabernacle, and a cubit on one side and a cubit on the other
- 28:18side of what remains of the length of the curtains of the
- 28:21tent shall hang over the one the sides of the Tabernacle on this
- 28:25side and on that side to cover it.
- 28:28And you shall make a covering of ramskins dyed red for the tent,
- 28:33and a covering of badger skins above that.
- 28:36So not ten, but 11. This time they're going to be a
- 28:38little bit longer. 30 cubits long coupled 5 and 6.
- 28:43The 6th is going to double over as a front for the covering.
- 28:46Make 50 loops on the edge. The class though will be made of
- 28:50bronze or brass and whatever remains hangs over to cover.
- 28:55So there's five on one side, 6 on the other made of goats hair
- 28:58which in the Middle East is black 6.
- 29:03Those that study such things the Bible tells us or they they have
- 29:06studied such things in the Bible. 6 is the number of man or
- 29:10the flesh throughout the Scriptures. 5 The number in the
- 29:13Bible representing grace. So here in this layer you have
- 29:17flesh and grace together. 11 in the Bible is often
- 29:24representative of disorder. So you have 11 curtains made-up
- 29:28the flesh and grace. And so stay with me.
- 29:31These put together with what bronze or brass clasps.
- 29:36Brass speaks to us in the Scriptures of judgement,
- 29:40judgement linking them together. And then the extra curtain would
- 29:43be used as sort of a flap so that all that was seen was the
- 29:46black curtain. And so these two speak
- 29:49powerfully of Jesus because on the inside are the angels
- 29:53beautifully demonstrating the tapestry of heaven, but over it
- 29:58is black inside. Wonderful.
- 30:02But he who knew no sin became sin for us as he hung on the
- 30:05cross, so sinful and ugly and black that God the Father turned
- 30:10away from the Son, as we recently learned, because the
- 30:13Father could not look upon what Son had become, He may be became
- 30:17sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
- 30:22And so the Tabernacle would speak of the beauty of Jesus,
- 30:26the darkness of sin, the reality of judgment that grasped
- 30:32together flesh and grace, which represents so much of our lives.
- 30:38And this would be something they'd walk by all the time.
- 30:40The priest would go in regularly.
- 30:43Which reminds me how often we take such weighty spiritual
- 30:49things and we treat them as common.
- 30:52Now, I know in one respect the Tabernacle was common, and yet
- 30:56it spoke of greater things. But in practice, the children of
- 31:00Israel would walk around the Tabernacle.
- 31:02Rock on the Tabernacle and you know as well as I do, they
- 31:05wouldn't always be so enamored by the mercy seat.
- 31:09They wouldn't be so enamored by the lampstand or what was
- 31:13demonstrated coming in out of the Tabernacle.
- 31:15They'd be going doing life. Up there's the Tabernacle, up
- 31:18there's the smoke up there's the and just living life, raising
- 31:21kids, going through and missing the significance something
- 31:25important relegated is common. I can say with absolute
- 31:29certainty, I see that in my own life of all that God has done
- 31:33for me and all that God continues to do for me and all
- 31:38that God will do for me, that even if He never did anything
- 31:41for me, I treat His blood. The blood of my Savior is common
- 31:47and I'm saved and I'm going to church.
- 31:51I own a Bible. I know a few scriptures.
- 31:54And that's where the tethering comes together of your worship
- 31:57and devotion, that personal life, not the public life, not
- 32:01even the church life, not even what you were presenting here
- 32:04today, but your personal, private life where you're
- 32:07enamored with the love of God, where you're blown away.
- 32:10Like the first time you heard it.
- 32:12Maybe it was your dad that shared the gospel with you when
- 32:15you were five, or the church you went to with your grandmother at
- 32:18six, or the church you walked into, like me into my 20s.
- 32:22And I walk into a Calvary Chapel and I hear a guy tell me that
- 32:25God loves me when it took me a long time to really believe
- 32:29that. I mean, I believed in the theory
- 32:32that God loves that that was not something I necessarily
- 32:35disagreed with, but loved me. That was a hard one because even
- 32:43in my own life, I demonstrated that I didn't even love myself.
- 32:46Now I know what the Bible says. I certainly live for myself.
- 32:50And my problem, really, according to Ephesians, is that
- 32:52I love myself too much. But you know, the reality is, is
- 32:57that in loving yourself too much, you begin to degrade
- 33:02yourself and control and you begin to make decisions that are
- 33:07not very helpful. You're very selfish,
- 33:09self-centered. And it's like a like a
- 33:11boomerang. You know, you're, you're making
- 33:12these decisions because you love yourself.
- 33:14And then you're beating yourself up because you're just living in
- 33:17shame and guilt. Even believers can live that
- 33:20way. But the truth is, is that when
- 33:23you treat even the common things like the Tabernacle is something
- 33:26great or or you treat the great things as something even
- 33:31greater, you are living what a pastor.
- 33:35What you often hear me say is, hey, get your eyes back on the
- 33:39Lord. Remember what He has done for
- 33:43you. Live according to His grace.
- 33:48I know your flesh is there and I know the grace is there, but
- 33:51it's connected by judgement. Jesus took the judgement upon
- 33:54Himself to free you from the flesh so you and I could walk in
- 34:00the spirit, in the newness of life, crucifying the flesh and
- 34:05living in the freedom and the authority that God has given to
- 34:08us. So church, be careful, be
- 34:10careful and to not be careful not to miss the obvious, but
- 34:15also not to treat what is common or what is grand is common and
- 34:21just like well and take it for granted thinking, even though I
- 34:26don't fully understand, I know God has something for me.
- 34:30I know he's going to lead me. I don't quite know the direction
- 34:33right now, but God is going to lead me.
- 34:34Why? Because he's LED me before.
- 34:37He I know God is going to speak to me because he spoke to me
- 34:39before. And I know God's going to
- 34:41deliver me because he's delivered me before.
- 34:44And I know God is going to forgive me because he already
- 34:46has. And I live under the blood of
- 34:49Jesus Christ, the sufficiency of the finished work of Jesus upon
- 34:54the cross. His life, his death, his
- 34:57resurrection has given me life even as it's given you life.
- 35:02And the Tabernacle would speak of the beauty of Jesus and the
- 35:05darkness of sin that sent him to the cross.
- 35:09It would be heaven, but covered by darkness, connected by
- 35:15judgement that was provided a way out in freedom of worship
- 35:20for you and for me. Again, the children of Israel
- 35:24wouldn't understand the full pictures of this.
- 35:27We have the advantage of looking back now, the fullness the
- 35:30gospel wants for all delivered to the Saints.
- 35:34However, even though the Israelites wouldn't understand
- 35:38all of this pointing to Messiah, even though they wouldn't see
- 35:42all the pieces put together what they did see and know they had
- 35:47to follow you and I. We need to live according to the
- 35:51light that we've been given. We're to live according to the
- 35:55knowledge. We are lived according to the
- 35:57Word. We are lived according to the
- 35:59understanding that God has given to us.
- 36:01And we're to live by faith, trusting God as much in the dark
- 36:07as we do in the light. Easier to trust God when you can
- 36:09see where you're going, isn't it?
- 36:11So much easier to see, But it's in those seasons where we don't
- 36:14see that God says, no, no, what I've revealed to you in the
- 36:17light, I want you to trust me in the dark.
- 36:20I'm going to bring you through it.
- 36:22As my pastor always say. God has brought you to it to
- 36:25bring you through it. That's the work of the Spirit.
- 36:30And so we have the advantage now of thinking, oh man, when I look
- 36:33back in the Tavern, I've never seen the Tabernacle with my own
- 36:36eyes, but I can see it now. The Lord has revealed it in his
- 36:39word. And each of the pieces was
- 36:41giving glimpses of the gospel right in the middle of the
- 36:46nation. The gospel, the salvation of
- 36:49God. They've already experienced the
- 36:50salvation of God, hadn't they? They were in Egypt not too long
- 36:53ago, just a few days, months ago.
- 36:56They were in Egypt. Delivered through what?
- 36:59The miraculous departing of the Red Sea.
- 37:03Neither the Egyptian army got them.
- 37:05Or did they have to run to the left or the right because God
- 37:08made a way where there was no way.
- 37:10They already know salvation. They already know deliverance.
- 37:14They already know God's faithfulness.
- 37:16They already have. The covenant's been given.
- 37:19The covenant's been ratified now as the Tabernacle, the place
- 37:23where God's going to meet them. Now What's next is learning how
- 37:26to live by faith. This theme has come up over and
- 37:31over recently where someone will share it happened.
- 37:36This services this last weekend, somebody last Wednesday, it's
- 37:39happened a lot where someone will come and share with me,
- 37:41Pastor, pastor, this is going on.
- 37:43This is going on. I'm very troubled.
- 37:45I'm very troubled. You know the very next phrase
- 37:47and I just don't understand. Welcome to the trap.
- 37:54Welcome to the trap. The trap has been set in your
- 37:57life because now your faith relationship with God has been
- 38:00changed, and you're stuck in a situation until you get some
- 38:06kind of understanding. That's really what you're
- 38:09saying. I don't understand.
- 38:09I don't understand. I don't understand.
- 38:11Yeah. But before that situation, how
- 38:13we were living your life by faith, But now there's a
- 38:17situation, it's overwhelming. It's hurtful.
- 38:19It's very hard to understand. I agree with that.
- 38:21Like, that's the condition of your life.
- 38:25But I'm here again to remind you you don't need to understand.
- 38:28You just need to believe. You may or may not understand.
- 38:32God might be gracious and explain it all to you.
- 38:35He may not very often, but you know he might.
- 38:40But he's saying no, no, I'm just so glad that you came to me and
- 38:42you asked me. He says, just come to me.
- 38:45I know you don't understand, son.
- 38:46I know you don't understand, daughter, but the life that I
- 38:49give to you and the life I want you to live is a life of faith,
- 38:54not just understanding. Be careful of that trap.
- 39:01Listen to your own language when you're speaking your own
- 39:04feelings. You know how you think.
- 39:06Feelings are overwhelming and they can be, but your mind is
- 39:09stronger than your feelings. You can change your mind 1000
- 39:13times a day. It's very hard to change your
- 39:15feelings. And so in your mind you want to,
- 39:17I want you to shift your thinking.
- 39:19And when you hear that word, I just don't understand.
- 39:21You can just stop and say Lord, just stop right there and say
- 39:23Lord, I don't understand why this all going on.
- 39:25I didn't want, it's not what I wanted, not what I planned.
- 39:27I don't understand, but I choose to walk by faith.
- 39:33I trust you. I'm just going to bring my
- 39:35message. I don't understand with me, but
- 39:38I'm trust you. You've been faithful in the
- 39:40past. You're faithful today.
- 39:43You'll be faithful in the future.
- 39:46Lord, we just thank you for your word.
- 39:48I get that sense that that understanding.
- 39:50I just, I know that's a big deal, is so painful not to
- 39:56understand these painful traumatic situations.
- 40:01But God, we don't want to give energy and attention to all the
- 40:03trauma, as hard as it is. We want to give energy and you
- 40:07know, our attention to your gracious faith to us.
- 40:13I don't understand how a God we better make sure God, we have
- 40:17the right God we're talking about, the one filled with mercy
- 40:21and grace who sent his own son to die for us.
- 40:23That's the God that we're trying to understand and we never will.
- 40:27You're so far beyond us. If we could understand all the
- 40:31ways of God, then we would be God and we're not.
- 40:35And so I pray comfort to those that need it today.
- 40:38I pray for wisdom. I pray God for faith.
- 40:42I know your word says you give us all measure of faith.
- 40:44So I pray that you'd fan the flames of faith.
- 40:47I pray that even as I think right now that the testimony of
- 40:50Pastor Andy and Lauren would encourage many that they do is
- 40:56see your handiwork in a in a couple that's always behind the
- 40:59scenes, but no less significant. Serving unseen, ministering to
- 41:09all these precious kids, just telling them about you or
- 41:12teaching them to be missionaries in their own life.
- 41:15Teaching them how much you love them, how much you care for them
- 41:19in a confusing world, in a world that just doesn't make sense at
- 41:25such a young age. They come into a place like this
- 41:29and, and things become clear and hope is born and callings are
- 41:34are are, you know, revealed. And that's an incubator growing,
- 41:41growing, growing until hatched into the calling and the life
- 41:45you have for these precious kids.
- 41:49Lord, we pray for your spirit to lead us and guide us tonight.
- 41:53Have your way with us in Jesus name, Amen.
- 41:58We pray that you've been encouraged by this Bible study
