- 0:00Speaker 1: Walk them aboard and see you cut Football Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Every Tuesday, we get together with Jimoora talk Husky's pig
- 0:07Speaker 1: skin coming off the loss in overtime, three of them
- 0:11Speaker 1: now in the season. First time coach, you've lost in
- 0:14Speaker 1: a month over a month. I'm just curious the difference
- 0:17Speaker 1: in the locker room. You know, when you win, there's
- 0:20Speaker 1: elation obviously, when you lose in the way the Huskies
- 0:22Speaker 1: have dropped these games, they're really heartbreaker types, right, last
- 0:27Speaker 1: play kind of things. And I wonder the recovery period
- 0:31Speaker 1: starts right in the locker room or how do you
- 0:33Speaker 1: handle that?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Oh well, I'll tell you what, Mike, that's a great question.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think you have to have a kind of get
- 0:41Speaker 2: the pulse for your team as they're coming off.
- 0:43Speaker 3: The field, when they're heartbreakers like that.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I think the best thing to do is is try
- 0:48Speaker 2: to be as calm as possible. Uh, keep it in,
- 0:51Speaker 2: you know, keep everyone kind of settled down, because emotions
- 0:54Speaker 2: are going to run high, you know when you lose,
- 0:56Speaker 2: when you invest in so much work and time and
- 1:00Speaker 2: energy and it's so important to you and then you
- 1:03Speaker 2: don't get it done and they end on that the
- 1:05Speaker 2: last play. You know, you don't really see it coming.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So I try to just be practical, calm them down.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And then when we come back Sunday and we meet,
- 1:16Speaker 2: then we get a little bit more into the weeds
- 1:18Speaker 2: with you know, what happened, why it happened, how we're
- 1:21Speaker 2: going to fix it, and then how we're going to
- 1:22Speaker 2: approach going forward. We try to learn those lessons, apply
- 1:26Speaker 2: those lessons, and then you know, we have a twenty
- 1:29Speaker 2: four hour rule. You know, after twenty four hours after
- 1:31Speaker 2: the game's over, you know, we have to flush at
- 1:35Speaker 2: least the emotional part of it so we can get
- 1:37Speaker 2: on to the next challenge.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And you know, it doesn't mean you just forget about
- 1:40Speaker 3: the game.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You take the lessons that you learned, good, bad, and different,
- 1:44Speaker 2: and you apply them, but you you have to move
- 1:47Speaker 2: to the next challenge.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And so that's yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You know, I think my job when we walk into
- 1:52Speaker 2: the locker room is to try to set the mood
- 1:55Speaker 2: for that day and also kind of, as you said.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Mike, how we're going to move forward. That's how I
- 2:01Speaker 3: approach it.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It's funny too, I wonder for you. You're suffering too.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I mean, you're winning, you're losing, it, It made it hurts.
- 2:10Speaker 1: How do you deal with that? I mean personally, you
- 2:13Speaker 1: walk in there, you're kind of let down. You say,
- 2:16Speaker 1: we gave sixty five minutes and we couldn't come up
- 2:18Speaker 1: with a win. You got to kind of put that
- 2:21Speaker 1: set that aside, don't you before you start talking to
- 2:23Speaker 1: the guys.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Absolutely, you know you have to set it aside and
- 2:26Speaker 2: realize your job as the leader's the head coach is
- 2:29Speaker 2: to get out of your own feelings and understand what
- 2:32Speaker 2: the young men are feeling and be a leader for
- 2:34Speaker 2: them and be a role model and a mentor and
- 2:37Speaker 2: show them the way through disappointment and adversity. And those
- 2:42Speaker 2: are all lessons that I think are important that a
- 2:46Speaker 2: coach understand. You know, you're the adult, You're the one
- 2:50Speaker 2: that's been through it, and they're looking to you for guidance,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and so you have to you have to put your
- 2:55Speaker 2: personal feelings of disappointment aside, and you have to get
- 2:58Speaker 2: into their emotions and what are they feeling. And that's
- 3:02Speaker 2: how I've always handled it and that's how I'll continue
- 3:04Speaker 2: to handle it. I'm not a guy that after losses
- 3:07Speaker 2: watching the locker room and starts, you own it.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Everybody.
- 3:09Speaker 2: That's just not the way that I don't think many
- 3:12Speaker 2: coaches do that at all.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I I haven't really been around any that do.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think it's just a it's a solemn time when
- 3:19Speaker 2: you don't win a game, and uh, and you got
- 3:21Speaker 2: to handle it the right way. You got to handle
- 3:23Speaker 2: it calm and and honest and practical. And is that
- 3:28Speaker 2: where that I don't want I don't want to handle
- 3:30Speaker 2: it too often?
- 3:31Speaker 1: How about that I'm winning them? Is that is tough
- 3:35Speaker 1: man losing? That's the problem with sports. Someone's got to win,
- 3:38Speaker 1: someone's got to lose. And but you know, handling that though,
- 3:42Speaker 1: that's such a big responsibility really because you know, the
- 3:46Speaker 1: guys are hanging on what you're going to say or
- 3:48Speaker 1: what's coach going to say about this? You know, I
- 3:50Speaker 1: know what I feel as a player, but then they're
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know, they're kind of looking to you to see
- 3:54Speaker 1: how you're going to handle it.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Sure, and it's important that I handle it the right way.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And I'm not going to say that I always do,
- 4:00Speaker 2: but I really try to, you know, And you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: sometimes you have to take a couple of deep breasts
- 4:04Speaker 2: and calm yourself down, and and then you have to
- 4:07Speaker 2: get like I said, you have to get into you know,
- 4:10Speaker 2: how is your team feeling, What do they need? What
- 4:12Speaker 2: do they need from me right now? What is it
- 4:15Speaker 2: that I need to provide for these players right now
- 4:18Speaker 2: to help them move through it just happened, learn from it,
- 4:21Speaker 2: apply it, and then get to the next one. And
- 4:23Speaker 2: so we keep it fairly brief after a game, and
- 4:26Speaker 2: then we'll come in Sunday and that's when we, like
- 4:29Speaker 2: I said, we get into the weeds, you know, the
- 4:32Speaker 2: practicality of what what just happened, you know, and why
- 4:36Speaker 2: and what can we do better to eliminate the chances
- 4:38Speaker 2: that it will happen again? And if there's criticisms to
- 4:42Speaker 2: be made, constructive criticisms to be made, then they're usually
- 4:45Speaker 2: made on a Sunday, you know, when the emotion has
- 4:48Speaker 2: died down a little bit, and Sundays are always a
- 4:52Speaker 2: little bit different, you know.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And once again, you got to gauge.
- 4:56Speaker 2: You got to gauge the mood of your team, the
- 4:58Speaker 2: psyche of your team, and then you also have to gauge,
- 5:00Speaker 2: you know, what, how do you want them to react
- 5:03Speaker 2: and what's the best way for me to make sure
- 5:07Speaker 2: they react the way we want them to react. Sometimes
- 5:10Speaker 2: that might be getting on them a little bit on
- 5:11Speaker 2: a Sunday, you know, sometimes that might still be soothing them.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Sometimes that might be you know, loud and and h
- 5:18Speaker 2: and demonstrative, and sometimes it might be calm.
- 5:21Speaker 3: And it just depends on the situation.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and this was a game, as all the overtimes
- 5:28Speaker 1: have been, where you kind obviously had a chance to win.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I mean, you know you could be eight no for
- 5:33Speaker 1: Crinel out. But anyway, my point of it all is
- 5:37Speaker 1: getting over it and moving on because you've got four games,
- 5:40Speaker 1: you got big ones coming up, you got three at home,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and the team has to start, you know, I guess
- 5:47Speaker 1: regaining the belief that you have when you're winning, because
- 5:49Speaker 1: you do believe in yourself when you win, and when
- 5:52Speaker 1: you lose, maybe there's a little doubt as to what
- 5:54Speaker 1: we're doing.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I think it's natural. You know, we'd won four in
- 5:58Speaker 2: a row and you lose one and over time and
- 6:02Speaker 2: it can be it can it can put a dent
- 6:04Speaker 2: in your confidence. And so the important thing is to
- 6:06Speaker 2: remind him that, you know, we are a good team
- 6:08Speaker 2: when we when we prepare and play to our potential.
- 6:14Speaker 2: But we also have to understand that you know, wins
- 6:16Speaker 2: aren't given. You got to go on, you got to
- 6:17Speaker 2: earn them through the week, and then you've got to
- 6:19Speaker 2: go take them on a Saturday. And uh, you can
- 6:22Speaker 2: never be entitled and think you're supposed to win. You know,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you gotta you gotta go take a win. You got
- 6:27Speaker 2: to go capture it and so h but the important
- 6:30Speaker 2: thing is to is that you you can't let it
- 6:32Speaker 2: linger into the next week. You know, you got to
- 6:35Speaker 2: come out on Monday with just a fresh sense of resolve.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And our guys understand that, and I think our coaches
- 6:42Speaker 2: do a good job, uh demanding that, and I think
- 6:45Speaker 2: our players really respond well because I think they're smart
- 6:49Speaker 2: and they're mature.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna talk to Alex Hanik a little bit
- 6:53Speaker 1: later on. He does mention that and Victor Rose as well.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We continue the Yukon Football Coaches Show. Stay tuned on
