- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcast on the
- 0:21Speaker 1: Brink Friday, October third, any and a basketball beginning to
- 0:27Speaker 1: get more into the swing of things here with media
- 0:31Speaker 1: day and open practice. Earlier this week Thursday night they
- 0:34Speaker 1: had the event down on Kirkwood, which we're going to
- 0:37Speaker 1: talk about a little bit on this episode, and tonight
- 0:40Speaker 1: Cream and Crimson scrimmage at Assembly Hall. So a lot
- 0:44Speaker 1: going on now. Obviously football is still on full swing,
- 0:46Speaker 1: but a bye week there before they go on the
- 0:49Speaker 1: road next week to take on Oregon out in Eugene.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Before we get to this week's guest and this week's
- 0:56Speaker 1: episode of Podcast on the Brink, I wanted to quickly

- 1:17Speaker 1: the YouTube channel numbers continue to grow. This week's episode
- 1:23Speaker 1: on Podcasts on the Brink, we've got one of our
- 1:27Speaker 1: new student writers, Quinn Richards who which Quinn, I'm not
- 1:32Speaker 1: sure I'm trying to unmute you from talking here.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It's not letting me do it.
- 1:35Speaker 3: On mind.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I think you should be good now, okay good.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Quinn is actually just had his intro post this morning
- 1:43Speaker 1: on Inside the Hall. Is currently working for the IDs
- 1:45Speaker 1: covering football, so kind to be doing split duty here
- 1:49Speaker 1: over the next couple of months while he's obviously focused
- 1:51Speaker 1: on football, but going to do some basketball and also
- 1:54Speaker 1: women's basketball stuff for Inside the Hall of the season.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Welcome to the show, Quinn, Welcome to Inside the Hall.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Good to be talking to you on this Friday morning.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's super good to be here. As excited to
- 2:02Speaker 4: finally get my intro out there. Have been waiting on
- 2:04Speaker 4: that for a while. And it's gonna be a good
- 2:06Speaker 4: year the crossover season. Obviously, we're gonna we're gonna grind
- 2:09Speaker 4: through it. But excited to get into the basketball season.
- 2:11Speaker 4: And it's really cool to kind of go to that
- 2:13Speaker 4: open practice and then the event last night to get
- 2:15Speaker 4: into the swing of things and get back into the
- 2:17Speaker 4: basketball mindset. Ya.
- 2:19Speaker 1: What this is your first year I think covering football.
- 2:22Speaker 1: What's just been that what's been that experience been like
- 2:24Speaker 1: so far? Obviously things have gone well, Indiana's five and zero.
- 2:27Speaker 1: A lot of excitement obviously around campus.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I'm sure the.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Student bodies super excited about the team start, but just
- 2:33Speaker 1: curious from a media perspective and what you observed so
- 2:36Speaker 1: far through the first five weeks of the season, what
- 2:38Speaker 1: that's been like. Yeah, it's been It's been really fun.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Obviously, kind of Indiana's had the microscope put on them
- 2:43Speaker 4: after last season and making the playoffs and stuff, and
- 2:46Speaker 4: what I've what I've kind of told people with covering
- 2:48Speaker 4: football is it's different because you kind of see the
- 2:50Speaker 4: game from a lot further out, I mean quite literally
- 2:52Speaker 4: with the press box and stuff. But it's it's a
- 2:55Speaker 4: lot tougher to watch it and from that perspective and
- 2:58Speaker 4: in terms of going back to film and stuff. But
- 2:59Speaker 4: it's been really fun to cover them, and obviously with
- 3:01Speaker 4: the national spotlight, there's a lot of politics that definitely
- 3:04Speaker 4: go into football, I'd say probably more than there would
- 3:06Speaker 4: be in basketball, and just kind of figuring out, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 4: what is ESPN saying, what are these other outlets saying.
- 3:11Speaker 4: But it's been a good experience. Obviously, there's a ton
- 3:14Speaker 4: of storylines there in the football program, and I'm the columnist,
- 3:17Speaker 4: So I have my very free reign to kind of
- 3:20Speaker 4: hit whatever I want to and touch on a lot
- 3:22Speaker 4: of things and kind of have fun with it, especially
- 3:25Speaker 4: early in the season when Indiana was just rolling through teams.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to ask you for those first
- 3:31Speaker 1: couple of games. Obviously, the Old Dominion game was a
- 3:33Speaker 1: little bit closer than most people thought, but the first
- 3:35Speaker 1: three games were I think pretty much penciled in as
- 3:38Speaker 1: wins before the season even started. As a columnist. What's
- 3:42Speaker 1: your approach on games that aren't necessarily going to be competitive.
- 3:46Speaker 2: And what you can take from those games?
- 3:48Speaker 4: From that game and specific the Indiana State game, I
- 3:52Speaker 4: actually was like, Okay, I just want to have fun
- 3:53Speaker 4: with this, right, I'm the columnist. I'm just going to
- 3:55Speaker 4: have free ran. So in the second half of that game,
- 3:57Speaker 4: it was already like fifty something to nothing. I mean,
- 4:00Speaker 4: we knew, we knew it was going to be not close.
- 4:02Speaker 4: I just left the press box. I went into the stadium.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I was going up and down the student sections because
- 4:06Speaker 4: there were just like one or two students to an
- 4:08Speaker 4: entire row, and I was like, why are you guys
- 4:10Speaker 4: still here? And so I started writing my story about
- 4:13Speaker 4: like you know, the students that were there for the
- 4:15Speaker 4: money line. I was talking to some guys in the band.
- 4:18Speaker 4: My lead for that story was something about when I
- 4:20Speaker 4: was in high school in the band of my high
- 4:21Speaker 4: school team losing zero to forty six or something, and
- 4:24Speaker 4: that's kind of the vibe it was, and happened to
- 4:26Speaker 4: be on a Friday night. So just try to find
- 4:28Speaker 4: the stories that maybe aren't getting told because everyone's going
- 4:31Speaker 4: to throw the statistics out there, but I probably had
- 4:34Speaker 4: five or six statistics and the rest of it was
- 4:36Speaker 4: just what people were saying in the in the student
- 4:39Speaker 4: section in the stadium, the few Indiana State fans that
- 4:42Speaker 4: I could find, and it was a ton of fun
- 4:44Speaker 4: rating honestly, probably one of the most enjoyable stories I've
- 4:47Speaker 4: been able to write since becoming a writer.
- 4:50Speaker 1: So you were down on Kirkwood last night for the
- 4:53Speaker 1: first ever Hoosier Hoops on Kirkwood. Obviously, this event has,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I don't want to say, replaced Who's Your a stare area,
- 5:00Speaker 1: but instead of having one night where Admittedly, as someone
- 5:05Speaker 1: who's been covering Who's Your Steria for a long time,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I think the event got a little bit stale over time.
- 5:11Speaker 1: It was in many years longer than it need to
- 5:15Speaker 1: be super drawn out. I like the idea of getting
- 5:18Speaker 1: people down on Kirkwood, having you know, just a different environment,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and then also having the scrimmage tonight. So it's going
- 5:27Speaker 1: to be interesting just to see kind of the attendant tonight.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But I'm curious, just last night you were down there
- 5:33Speaker 1: on Kirkwood, what were some of the main takeaways from
- 5:37Speaker 1: the event. Obviously not any real basketball being played, there's
- 5:41Speaker 1: obviously some trick shots and different shooting contests, but just
- 5:44Speaker 1: what was the vibe down there and kind of what
- 5:46Speaker 1: was the turnout like for the first ever Who's your
- 5:49Speaker 1: hoops on Kirkwood.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say I would say vibes are pretty high.
- 5:53Speaker 4: I got there an hour and a half before it
- 5:55Speaker 4: even started to make sure I could get a front
- 5:57Speaker 4: row seat. But it was a good thing I did,
- 5:59Speaker 4: because it started getting pack behind me. I mean I
- 6:01Speaker 4: was on the very edge of the metal gated kind
- 6:03Speaker 4: of court that they brought in the temporary court, and
- 6:06Speaker 4: there was probably seven or eight rows of people behind
- 6:08Speaker 4: me on that side. Then across the way you had
- 6:11Speaker 4: upstairs pub overlooking the court. Really cool for those people
- 6:15Speaker 4: up there. I think my biggest takeaway was just the
- 6:18Speaker 4: understanding that this new kind of era with Darren Derees
- 6:23Speaker 4: in this holy roster has of the importance of the
- 6:26Speaker 4: students and the fan base and connecting with them, because
- 6:29Speaker 4: in my opinion, it felt like that had been something
- 6:32Speaker 4: that was kind of pushed away on the back burner
- 6:34Speaker 4: for Indiana basketball, like understanding the students. Indiana for a
- 6:37Speaker 4: long time relied on, like, hey, look we have our history,
- 6:41Speaker 4: we have our banners, but the real, the core of
- 6:43Speaker 4: it is getting in touch with the students.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:45Speaker 4: If you're relying on the past, you're alienate, alienating the present.
- 6:48Speaker 4: I think that's what kind of Debrees is working to change.
- 6:51Speaker 4: And you saw that, you saw that.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Today or sorry last night.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Debrez at the end of the thing was like, okay,
- 6:56Speaker 4: everyone at upstairs, I'm buying you drinks tonight.
- 7:00Speaker 3: He had a quote in there that I loved.
- 7:01Speaker 4: It was like, you know what makes the space this
- 7:03Speaker 4: place special when you go into assembly hall and you
- 7:04Speaker 4: see the banners, But you know what really makes this
- 7:06Speaker 4: place special, it's this right here. It showed just with
- 7:10Speaker 4: that sentence he understands, he gets it that the core
- 7:14Speaker 4: of this fan base needs to be the students. It's
- 7:16Speaker 4: a college team, obviously that's going to be the key,
- 7:19Speaker 4: and I think this was a huge step in the
- 7:21Speaker 4: right direction for that. There were some issues. Obviously, there
- 7:24Speaker 4: were some mike issues. Trent Sisily's name wasn't even called
- 7:28Speaker 4: because the microphone completely cut out for his name.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Uh So that.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Was that was tough, But overall it was really cool.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Sidney Parrish was there, kind of MCing for the women's team,
- 7:37Speaker 4: Griffin Gonzalez for the men's team. But it was It
- 7:40Speaker 4: was an awesome, I think event for for mostly the students.
- 7:43Speaker 4: I'm not sure for the older fans it's something that
- 7:46Speaker 4: they like more than Who's Your Hysteria? But I personally
- 7:49Speaker 4: think that for this program, this was a much better event.
- 7:52Speaker 4: As you mentioned Who's Your Hysteria? I mean with the
- 7:54Speaker 4: attendance and stuff like, it looked sparse, it was kind
- 7:57Speaker 4: of long to sit through. This event was an hour.
- 8:00Speaker 3: That's it.
- 8:01Speaker 4: From when the players first got there to when they
- 8:03Speaker 4: left the court. It was an hour long. I think
- 8:05Speaker 4: that was the perfect amount of time, good music throughout
- 8:08Speaker 4: and stuff. It was a good, good experience overall.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I was at some of the very first Who's
- 8:13Speaker 1: Your hysterias, which were quite a while ago, in twenty
- 8:17Speaker 1: five years ago. I don't exactly know what year it began,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but it used to be almost like it was a
- 8:23Speaker 1: midnight madness type of practice. I don't know if you
- 8:25Speaker 1: remember that that term, but sure teams couldn't actually start
- 8:28Speaker 1: practicing until midnight on a certain day, so they would
- 8:30Speaker 1: actually have people come in at midnight and they would kick.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Off the season with an event.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Now that actually meant something because it was actually symbolic
- 8:39Speaker 1: of the practice actually starting. But over time, who's your
- 8:42Speaker 1: hysteria in many ways, you know, changed and we had
- 8:46Speaker 1: a couple of years ago there was there was a
- 8:48Speaker 1: concert involved in the end. I think two straight years
- 8:51Speaker 1: Indiana brought in some musical acts to do concerts. And
- 8:57Speaker 1: in many ways it's always been a recruiting event. But
- 9:00Speaker 1: I think with the changes in IL and just everything,
- 9:02Speaker 1: how recruiting changes now, it makes sense to kind of
- 9:06Speaker 1: differentiate these events a little bit. And I think instead
- 9:09Speaker 1: of having a night that goes two and a half
- 9:12Speaker 1: three hours long, you break it up, have this event
- 9:16Speaker 1: on Kirkwood and then tonight. My understanding is it's going
- 9:18Speaker 1: to be a forty roughly forty minute scrimmage that I
- 9:21Speaker 1: expect to last about ninety minutes, but that's much more manageable. Also,
- 9:27Speaker 1: giving people a chance to kind of see the team
- 9:29Speaker 1: in a different venue, having everyone down on Kirkwood in
- 9:32Speaker 1: more relaxed environment, I think that's a great thing.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I'm curious.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not asking you to estimate the crowd
- 9:39Speaker 1: or how many people were there, but was it, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 1: five hundred people, a thousand people? What would you kind
- 9:45Speaker 1: of surmise was the attendance down there last night?
- 9:50Speaker 4: I mean, there had to have been at least two
- 9:51Speaker 4: hundred people at upstairs alone. I would say it's closer
- 9:54Speaker 4: to a thousand. I think overall. I had a roommate
- 9:57Speaker 4: ask me, it's like, you think it was more people
- 9:58Speaker 4: than who's yourysteria? Was like, probably less people than who's
- 10:01Speaker 4: your hysteria? But I think it didn't necessarily matter when
- 10:05Speaker 4: the excitement was actually there, right, Like, if you're bringing
- 10:07Speaker 4: in two thousand people for your hysteria in a seventeen
- 10:10Speaker 4: thousand capacities state like Arena, it looks a whole lot
- 10:12Speaker 4: worse than when you have a packed Kirkwood Avenue. But
- 10:16Speaker 4: it was packed like it was genuinely. There were a
- 10:19Speaker 4: ton of people on the front rows trying to get looks.
- 10:22Speaker 4: There are people standing up on balconies, a ton of
- 10:24Speaker 4: people from their apartments that.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Overlooked had really good views. But yeah, it was it
- 10:28Speaker 3: was a good atmosphere.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And then just even up and down the street, people
- 10:31Speaker 4: walking by just stopping to kind of take a peek.
- 10:33Speaker 4: And even students who maybe otherwise wouldn't care about basketball
- 10:36Speaker 4: just because of the event were We're curious and interested.
- 10:39Speaker 4: But I think it's a big step. Like I mentioned, like,
- 10:42Speaker 4: who's your hysteria students had to go to Assembly all.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Now they brought the basketball team to the students, and
- 10:49Speaker 4: I think that just shows you what Indiana's really trying
- 10:52Speaker 4: to do now with with debrees at the Helm.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you make a good point about the
- 10:57Speaker 1: attendance too for hysteria. You know, when I first started
- 11:01Speaker 1: inside the hall, in some of those years where Crean
- 11:04Speaker 1: had Indiana ranked in the top five or ten in
- 11:07Speaker 1: the country, there were years where the lower bowl and
- 11:11Speaker 1: was completely full Assembly Hall and you had people in
- 11:13Speaker 1: the balcony. The last couple of years, obviously they've had
- 11:17Speaker 1: decent solid crowds there, but nothing like those. So I
- 11:20Speaker 1: think that kind of speaks to the idea that maybe
- 11:23Speaker 1: changing this up and it's a good time to do
- 11:25Speaker 1: it right. A new regime is in a new coaching staff.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And the other thing I'll say is just Darren DeVries. Obviously,
- 11:32Speaker 1: what ultimately matters with any coaching staff is wins and losses.
- 11:36Speaker 1: He's not going to be judged on what he does
- 11:39Speaker 1: in terms of opening access to the media or opening
- 11:42Speaker 1: more opportunities for the fan base to interact. But I
- 11:45Speaker 1: do think it's a good idea when you're trying to
- 11:47Speaker 1: build a culture and relationship with the fan base that
- 11:52Speaker 1: you allow more opportunities for your team to be in
- 11:56Speaker 1: front of the fan base. It felt like the last
- 11:58Speaker 1: couple of years that Indiana was really closed off from
- 12:01Speaker 1: just a public in general. And having those opportunities for
- 12:05Speaker 1: for media to go watch practice, we can write observations
- 12:08Speaker 1: and share what we're seeing from the team. Talking to players,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you get more or you get better responses when you
- 12:15Speaker 1: have an open locker room type setting, rather than just
- 12:17Speaker 1: selling guys on a podium and getting canned answers and
- 12:20Speaker 1: then having the Hoosier the hot Hall of Hoops, which
- 12:24Speaker 1: is going to be brought back at the end of
- 12:26Speaker 1: the month this year, something that Tom Crean had formally
- 12:28Speaker 1: in Indiana. That's another way you build a fan base
- 12:32Speaker 1: by allowing some of the younger kids that you know,
- 12:35Speaker 1: maybe don't get to come to Assembly Hall for a
- 12:37Speaker 1: game during the season because it's too late past their bedtime,
- 12:40Speaker 1: think their parents can bring them in. They have a
- 12:42Speaker 1: chance to meet the players, get candy. So I think
- 12:44Speaker 1: that's just another thing that they've done to really try
- 12:48Speaker 1: to bridge some of the you know, relationship between the
- 12:53Speaker 1: fan base. It's it's has been broken in the last
- 12:56Speaker 1: couple of years.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I mean it's it's it's a it's a conceded effort
- 13:01Speaker 4: you can tell to to kind of make that happen.
- 13:04Speaker 4: And I think they're off to a really good start.
- 13:06Speaker 4: And I mean they're smart. Coach Derees is definitely a
- 13:08Speaker 4: smart guy. He knows that from a media perspective, when
- 13:10Speaker 4: we're going in for for open practice and stuff, especially
- 13:13Speaker 4: with this this kind of team, it's tough for us.
- 13:15Speaker 4: We're not gonna write negative stuff, Like it's really tough
- 13:18Speaker 4: to write a negative story about a player who hasn't played.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So they know that you know it's gonna be good
- 13:23Speaker 4: publicity for them. I don't think it was a coincidence
- 13:27Speaker 4: that after the event last night, Derese came over to
- 13:30Speaker 4: shake hands just right in front of a bunch of
- 13:32Speaker 4: media people that were filming it, you know what I mean, Like,
- 13:35Speaker 4: he's a smart guy and he kind of knows that
- 13:37Speaker 4: and they're playing that game.
- 13:38Speaker 3: But it's it's great for the program, right.
- 13:40Speaker 4: It's great for us as media, we get the access,
- 13:42Speaker 4: we get more stories, but it's also great for the program,
- 13:44Speaker 4: great for the students, and great for the fans.
- 13:47Speaker 1: So this was my second time watching practice. I went
- 13:50Speaker 1: earlier to some of the first time. For you, what
- 13:51Speaker 1: were when you had a chance to watch the practice?
- 13:54Speaker 1: It was I think about ninety minutes. As you said,
- 13:58Speaker 1: there's there's really nothing negative to take away from it
- 14:01Speaker 1: because it's you know, it's a lot of a lot
- 14:04Speaker 1: of shots going in, a lot of you know, positive
- 14:06Speaker 1: energy in the arena. We'll obviously know a lot more
- 14:09Speaker 1: about this team, probably when they play that exhibition game
- 14:12Speaker 1: against Baylor in Indianapolis later this month. But I'm just
- 14:15Speaker 1: curious what your thoughts were watching some of the new
- 14:18Speaker 1: guys get a chance to go through practice on Tuesday
- 14:22Speaker 1: at Assembly Hall.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Really, just the energy is what stood out to me
- 14:26Speaker 4: right away. With the student manager's clabbing. It's tough because
- 14:30Speaker 4: we can't compare this to the past because there was
- 14:32Speaker 4: just never this opportunity in the past and the Mike
- 14:34Speaker 4: Woodson regime to watch a practice, so we can only
- 14:37Speaker 4: really go off of what we've heard. I've heard Mike
- 14:40Speaker 4: Woodson was kind of in your face, like he will
- 14:43Speaker 4: chew you out at practice and stuff, and he is
- 14:45Speaker 4: a guy who you know, would would like to hear
- 14:47Speaker 4: himself talk in all honesty for better or for worse.
- 14:51Speaker 4: DeVries kind of sat back. I don't know if you
- 14:53Speaker 4: noticed that too, Like it seemed like he was willing
- 14:55Speaker 4: to take kind of a back seat. Not that he
- 14:57Speaker 4: wasn't watching practice or doing anything like that. He was
- 15:00Speaker 4: certainly attentive, but he would let his assistant coaches kind
- 15:03Speaker 4: of take over the reins. He would let his veteran
- 15:05Speaker 4: players kind of lead run throughs and stuff like that.
- 15:09Speaker 3: So that stood out to me.
- 15:11Speaker 4: In terms of players, I think one guy that really
- 15:13Speaker 4: stood out to me was Tayton Connorway. He looked just
- 15:16Speaker 4: like a savvy vett through and through Like, there's a
- 15:18Speaker 4: couple plays when they were whether it was drills, he
- 15:21Speaker 4: had a one on one drill with Sam alexis a
- 15:23Speaker 4: much bigger defender, and he was in the post shot
- 15:25Speaker 4: clock running down kind with like a back shoulder pump
- 15:27Speaker 4: fake and up like just look like a veteran out there.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I think he's gonna be a guy that's fun to watch.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Lamar Wilkerson just a ton of high energy. You can
- 15:36Speaker 4: tell that guy's got personality, a good sense of humor,
- 15:38Speaker 4: but not in a distracting sense. He was still locked in,
- 15:42Speaker 4: still focused, still kind of leading his teammates. But the
- 15:45Speaker 4: biggest thing, yeah, would just be the energy you had
- 15:48Speaker 4: the student managers just clapping it up after every single play,
- 15:51Speaker 4: Every single student manager, every player, when they would go
- 15:54Speaker 4: through the run throughs, would repeat the set, repeat the play.
- 15:57Speaker 4: And I think Devrez has talked about that. He's like,
- 15:59Speaker 4: that's the culture we want to build. And it was
- 16:01Speaker 4: on display. And how much of that was was show
- 16:04Speaker 4: for the media, I guess we will never know. But
- 16:07Speaker 4: if it was a show for the media, they did
- 16:08Speaker 4: a pretty good job putting it on.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure things were dialed back a little bit,
- 16:13Speaker 1: just in terms of the actual coaching that was going on.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Who knows, the players may have actually been glad to
- 16:18Speaker 1: have us there because maybe it was a bit of
- 16:21Speaker 1: an easier day. But the one thing I'll say is
- 16:23Speaker 1: is just you can all the if you notice, derees
- 16:28Speaker 1: kind of have like a piece of paper, and the
- 16:29Speaker 1: assistant coaches did everything on the on the clock was timed,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and everything kind of moved along on a schedule, so
- 16:36Speaker 1: it was basically like we're going to do whatever it was,
- 16:41Speaker 1: twelve or fifteen things, and we're going to do them
- 16:43Speaker 1: in the X amount of time, and we're going to
- 16:45Speaker 1: be really focused on that thing while we're doing it.
- 16:47Speaker 1: There wasn't a lot of wasted time. I mean, there
- 16:49Speaker 1: was obviously a few small breaks for water and maybe
- 16:54Speaker 1: a you know, a couple other thing instances where it
- 16:59Speaker 1: would stop and given instruction to somebody, But overall, I
- 17:03Speaker 1: was just impressed with this is kind of goes for
- 17:05Speaker 1: both practices, how efficient things were, just in terms of
- 17:08Speaker 1: covering a lot of ground. And it started out with
- 17:11Speaker 1: kind of going over a ton of offensive sets and
- 17:15Speaker 1: working on passing nothing at game speed. But I think
- 17:17Speaker 1: it was just kind of a run through of like,
- 17:19Speaker 1: this is what we're we've maybe installed lately. We're going
- 17:21Speaker 1: to go, you know, make sure everything is being executed
- 17:25Speaker 1: as playing. Then when they got into the actual work,
- 17:27Speaker 1: after they did some stretching there, everything was done with
- 17:30Speaker 1: like one hundred and ten percent energy. They were all engaged.
- 17:32Speaker 1: They were all, as you said, clapping for each other.
- 17:34Speaker 1: There wasn't anyone that was not watching what was going on,
- 17:38Speaker 1: no one joking off to the side. It was very
- 17:39Speaker 1: business like in the approach. And you know, I know
- 17:42Speaker 1: it's a cliche to say, but you know, you practice
- 17:44Speaker 1: how you play, and so I think it bodes well
- 17:47Speaker 1: just in terms of the organization and you have efficiency
- 17:50Speaker 1: that this team in this program are going to operate with.
- 17:53Speaker 2: From watching practice, I think it's a good sign. You know.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I want maybe I want to ask you, you know
- 17:59Speaker 1: about at Sicily And I'm not sure if you watched
- 18:03Speaker 1: him closely at all, but he was the guy that
- 18:05Speaker 1: really stood out to me just in terms of his
- 18:07Speaker 1: energy and kind of the way he approached the game
- 18:08Speaker 1: doing a lot of little things. I can see him
- 18:10Speaker 1: being a guy that not just because not just because
- 18:13Speaker 1: of the fact that he's from Indiana, but the way
- 18:16Speaker 1: he approaches the game and his knack for getting his
- 18:20Speaker 1: hand on the ball, whether it's on the offensive or defensive.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Glass makes a lot of unselfish plays, makes a lot
- 18:26Speaker 1: of winning plays. I think he's a guy that fans
- 18:28Speaker 1: are going to really gravitate towards. Any any thoughts on
- 18:32Speaker 1: what you saw out of him, and do you agree
- 18:34Speaker 1: with with kind of just what you saw in terms
- 18:36Speaker 1: of him doing the little things and making the hustle place.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree. And he looked surprisingly comfortable for being
- 18:43Speaker 3: a freshman in the team with a ton of vets,
- 18:45Speaker 3: a ton of guys with a ton of college basketball experience. Like,
- 18:48Speaker 3: he looked comfortable, and he made those plays. He made
- 18:51Speaker 3: the hustle plays. He was kind of relentless on defense.
- 18:54Speaker 3: You could tell he's got that passion, that intensity on
- 18:57Speaker 3: the defensive end, which I think sometimes you don't necessarily
- 19:00Speaker 3: from a freshman coming into this kind of environment.
- 19:04Speaker 4: But he looks dialed in. I think Devris mentioned that
- 19:06Speaker 4: he was like, yeah, like he's done a really good job.
- 19:08Speaker 4: He hasn't fallen behind much. We threw him into the fire,
- 19:11Speaker 4: straight into it with like this is going to be
- 19:13Speaker 4: an intense practice, but he's kind of handled it, handled
- 19:15Speaker 4: it well. Obviously he's got a great physical frame. He's
- 19:18Speaker 4: put on some weight since coming over from Mountain Verd.
- 19:22Speaker 3: But yeah, no, he looked good.
- 19:23Speaker 4: He had a nice dunk, and it seems like his
- 19:25Speaker 4: teammates really like him. I heard a couple of times
- 19:27Speaker 4: Eli there would go Trent, you know what I mean,
- 19:29Speaker 4: just hyping him up. On one occasion, Trent was on
- 19:32Speaker 4: the right side of the floor, Lamar was on the
- 19:35Speaker 4: left side, and Lamar doing his own thing. Notice Trent
- 19:38Speaker 4: on the right side make a nice play, and he
- 19:39Speaker 4: like cheer him ond He's like, there you go, Trent, Like,
- 19:40Speaker 4: nice play, Keep that up. So I think that's super
- 19:43Speaker 4: super helpful for a guy like Trent Sisley to have
- 19:46Speaker 4: those teammates around him that are kind of boosting him
- 19:49Speaker 4: and helping him up. But also, yeah, I mean, Trent's
- 19:51Speaker 4: got the skills I think to be a contributing piece
- 19:54Speaker 4: on this team. It'll be interesting to see how much
- 19:56Speaker 4: DeVries would like to use him, especially early on in
- 19:59Speaker 4: the season. But yeah, that's It's definitely a guy to
- 20:02Speaker 4: watch moving forward for in the enna, and I think
- 20:04Speaker 4: he would one hundred percent be a fan favorite if
- 20:06Speaker 4: he kind of gets going.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I think he's definitely a guy that's positioned himself for
- 20:11Speaker 1: a rotation role. I'm not saying he's going to start
- 20:13Speaker 1: or play twenty five minutes a game, but I definitely
- 20:17Speaker 1: see even when the competition stiffens, he's going to be
- 20:19Speaker 1: a guy that are gonna be comfortable putting on the
- 20:23Speaker 1: on the court, whether it's against Kentucky or Marquette or Alabama.
- 20:27Speaker 2: A and M.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I think he's going to have a somewhat of a
- 20:29Speaker 1: role for most of most if not all, the season
- 20:32Speaker 1: on this team. You know, obviously, a lot of what
- 20:34Speaker 1: we've talked about is positive, and everything in the preseason
- 20:37Speaker 1: is projecting, and there's a lot of things that people
- 20:41Speaker 1: feel good about with the new coaching regime. But when
- 20:43Speaker 1: you look at this team on paper and kind of
- 20:45Speaker 1: what you saw in practice, are there one or two
- 20:48Speaker 1: things that you're curious to see, like how it works
- 20:51Speaker 1: out when the season actually starts. From a basketball perspective,
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know a lot of people have questioned the you know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: the rim protection and just as they're gonna have an
- 21:00Speaker 1: of size, that's a pretty obvious one. I mean, feel
- 21:02Speaker 1: free to talk about that if that's kind of what
- 21:04Speaker 1: comes to mind. But is there anything from a just
- 21:06Speaker 1: basketball perspective that you're interested to see or maybe I
- 21:09Speaker 1: don't want to say concern, but just maybe a challenge
- 21:13Speaker 1: that this team could have when when basketball games actually start.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I think size definitely. We saw some guys like
- 21:19Speaker 4: Read Bailey and Sam Alexis. They didn't I want, I
- 21:21Speaker 4: want to say they disappointed at practice, but they didn't
- 21:23Speaker 4: necessarily stand out in terms of the plays they were making.
- 21:27Speaker 4: I know Devreesa talked about for Alexis kind of working
- 21:30Speaker 4: on the perimeter. He took like three or four threes,
- 21:32Speaker 4: and I don't think made a single one at the
- 21:34Speaker 4: open practice that at least I saw and Read. I
- 21:38Speaker 4: know there was a lot of comments about Reed's kind
- 21:40Speaker 4: of quickness despite his length.
- 21:43Speaker 3: I didn't necessarily see that in the open practice.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I know in the first open practice some people I
- 21:48Speaker 4: was talking to some friends and they said he looked
- 21:50Speaker 4: really good. But I think the size is definitely concerned.
- 21:54Speaker 4: And then another thing that I don't know if we
- 21:56Speaker 4: saw was a negative in practice, but just chemistry going
- 22:00Speaker 4: into the season. We don't know who's going to be
- 22:02Speaker 4: that guy who lifts this team up. We don't know
- 22:04Speaker 4: how these guys are going to interact with each other
- 22:06Speaker 4: when they face adversity. So just working on chemistry and
- 22:09Speaker 4: stuff in addition to the size. But the shooting looked
- 22:13Speaker 4: really good. I think that's a positive that a lot
- 22:14Speaker 4: of Indiana basketball fans would like to hear.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Is that from what we saw.
- 22:18Speaker 4: In practice, the team kind of shoot the cover off
- 22:20Speaker 4: the ball, contested threes, open threes. Maybe not at Hoos
- 22:25Speaker 4: Your Hoops on Kirkwood with the lighting there. They missed
- 22:27Speaker 4: a lot on the three point contest, but in practice
- 22:30Speaker 4: they were they were shooting and cover up the ball.
- 22:32Speaker 1: That was I meant to ask you that earlier. What
- 22:35Speaker 1: was How was the actual basketball at hoos Your Hoops
- 22:38Speaker 1: on Kirkwood? Was it just shooting contests? And obviously I'm
- 22:42Speaker 1: guessing there wasn't a dunk contest. That's another thing they
- 22:44Speaker 1: used to drive me in, saying, who's your hysteria? Was
- 22:47Speaker 1: there would be a dunk contest and there there usually
- 22:50Speaker 1: be one or two guys that could complete the dunks,
- 22:52Speaker 1: but there would be a player or two out there
- 22:55Speaker 1: that would repeatedly miss dunks, and it was like the
- 22:57Speaker 1: crowd had to get them going to actually complete the
- 22:59Speaker 1: dunks and you almost bad for they tried to have
- 23:01Speaker 1: like an almost like an NBA All Star Game to
- 23:04Speaker 1: style dunk contest, and that it's difficult to do to
- 23:07Speaker 1: pull it off and make it look good. So I'm
- 23:10Speaker 1: assuming that the dunk contest was not happening, and who's
- 23:13Speaker 1: your hoops on Kirkwood?
- 23:15Speaker 4: Yeah, thankfully, no dunk contest, No like actual play. The
- 23:18Speaker 4: first thing was they like warmed up a little bit.
- 23:21Speaker 4: They had a three point contest. They had Nick Dorn
- 23:24Speaker 4: lead things off, which was interesting because he, I mean,
- 23:27Speaker 4: he's been kind of coming back from an injury, hasn't
- 23:29Speaker 4: fully practiced.
- 23:30Speaker 3: I think he shot.
- 23:31Speaker 4: There was fifteen shots from the three point like three
- 23:33Speaker 4: different spots left center right. He went I think two
- 23:36Speaker 4: or three for fifteen. So not the best start for
- 23:40Speaker 4: the for Nick Dorn there. It was probably tough. I
- 23:43Speaker 4: can't I didn't see from their perspective what it looked like,
- 23:45Speaker 4: but I'm sure the lighting wasn't great. It wasn't the
- 23:49Speaker 4: best kind of perspective for the shooter, I can imagine
- 23:52Speaker 4: with just the stample gates behind them. But then they
- 23:56Speaker 4: went back and forth between the women's team and the
- 23:57Speaker 4: men's team Lamar Wilkerson won the three point contest. I
- 24:01Speaker 4: think his he shot like nine for fifteen is first
- 24:04Speaker 4: shract eras first go around and went maybe eight for
- 24:07Speaker 4: fifteen or nine for fifteen again the second go around.
- 24:11Speaker 4: They had trick shots Shaye Chesky above upstairs and then
- 24:15Speaker 4: as probably everyone has seen transistently making it from the
- 24:18Speaker 4: balcony above five guys on like his seventh attempt, which
- 24:21Speaker 4: people won't say it, but it's true.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Other than that, not a ton of basketball was played.
- 24:27Speaker 4: They played a game of Knockout, which a member of
- 24:30Speaker 4: the student athletic board, like a girl, she was probably
- 24:34Speaker 4: the shortest person on the court. Was just lights out.
- 24:37Speaker 4: I mean she made probably twelve out of fifteen, made
- 24:40Speaker 4: her last eight shots, and she beat both men's and
- 24:43Speaker 4: women's players from Indiana's programs, So that got a pretty
- 24:47Speaker 4: loud year. But other than that, I think that was
- 24:50Speaker 4: I think that was the only basketball that was actually
- 24:52Speaker 4: played on the court, but it didn't really need to
- 24:55Speaker 4: be played. It was fun regardless of just getting to
- 24:58Speaker 4: see kind of the personalities behind the faces and stuff,
- 25:01Speaker 4: and I think that's the biggest thing for students as well.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Quinn, you were not supposed to spoil the fact that
- 25:07Speaker 1: it took Trent Sislely multiple tents. I mean that that
- 25:09Speaker 1: was a perfect media shot and now it's and now
- 25:13Speaker 1: it's it's ruined for everybody.
- 25:15Speaker 4: It's ruined for everyone that thought that that was a
- 25:17Speaker 4: good omen for the season. Now they're like, oh no, oh, no,
- 25:21Speaker 4: oh no, it took many tries, but it's true. J Chesky,
- 25:23Speaker 4: unfortunately and her seven tries, could not make it from upstairs.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Though she had a tougher angle, Trent Cisly was able
- 25:28Speaker 4: to bank it in.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Does she draw a rim at all?
- 25:32Speaker 3: She got closed.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I think she hit the rim on her fourth out
- 25:35Speaker 4: of fifth shot, but she did not. She did not
- 25:39Speaker 4: have the luck of being able to bake it off
- 25:41Speaker 4: the backboard like Trent Sisley had.
- 25:45Speaker 2: So last thing.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Before we we wrap up this episode, I want to
- 25:49Speaker 1: get back to football a little bit, because you've been
- 25:51Speaker 1: obviously watching that. We've been not we've we've were covering
- 25:55Speaker 1: it this season on Inside the Hall for the first time.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Josh has done a tremendous job and at least having
- 26:00Speaker 1: a lot of fun with that. You're having a lot
- 26:01Speaker 1: of fun with the IDs, But what's the feeling just
- 26:05Speaker 1: on campus about this team and their prospects to actually
- 26:11Speaker 1: go out and win this game at Oregon. It's obviously
- 26:13Speaker 1: they're going to be a you know, an underdog, but
- 26:17Speaker 1: I was looking at some of the probabilities. I think
- 26:19Speaker 1: that ESPNF Football Power Index has them. It was in
- 26:22Speaker 1: the preseason it was like a nineteen percent chance to win.
- 26:25Speaker 1: They've got them now close to thirty percent chance, so
- 26:28Speaker 1: not not nothing. Obviously that it also has them favored
- 26:31Speaker 1: to win the game at Penn State. So kind of
- 26:33Speaker 1: a load of question here. I'm just kind of curious
- 26:36Speaker 1: what the what the feeling is there in Bloomington about
- 26:38Speaker 1: Indiana being able to actually go on the road.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Win this game. And then also I'll change with that
- 26:44Speaker 2: then I have one one follow up, go ahead.
- 26:45Speaker 4: I think it's kind of a nervous excitementment on campus,
- 26:50Speaker 4: like people are excited for this game because it's Indiana's
- 26:52Speaker 4: first chance this season to really prove themselves. But it's
- 26:57Speaker 4: also nervousness because I think a lot of people know
- 26:59Speaker 4: that we're is going to have the talent edge, most
- 27:02Speaker 4: likely is probably going to have the I mean, is
- 27:05Speaker 4: going to have the home field advantage, and will be
- 27:07Speaker 4: favored a lot of people I've talked to have been like, Okay,
- 27:11Speaker 4: as long as we stay competitive, because that's going to
- 27:13Speaker 4: be really honestly a key and in my perspective, like
- 27:17Speaker 4: even if it's not competitive in the eye test, if
- 27:20Speaker 4: it's competitive on paper, that'll be huge for Indiana come December,
- 27:24Speaker 4: come selection time. Because you look at a Indiana schedule,
- 27:27Speaker 4: there might be some slip up potential with Michigan State
- 27:30Speaker 4: or at Maryland, but like grand scheme of things, it's
- 27:33Speaker 4: at Oregon at Penn State that decides your season. So
- 27:36Speaker 4: I think with two losses, Indiana's on the bubbles. So
- 27:38Speaker 4: you've got to be competitive. But people here are excited.
- 27:41Speaker 4: People here are pumped. I know a lot of people
- 27:43Speaker 4: are going to be crowding upstairs. I think it's that
- 27:46Speaker 4: three point thirty local for us in Bloomington, like twelve
- 27:50Speaker 4: thirty or eleven thirty in in Pacific, could be twelve
- 27:55Speaker 4: thirty twelve thirty out out West. But yeah, fans are excited.
- 27:58Speaker 4: I mean, it's should be a good game. I'm hoping
- 28:01Speaker 4: it's a competitive game just from a journalist perspective because
- 28:03Speaker 4: those are always more fun to cover.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Yo, you kind of answer there like the bubble thing
- 28:09Speaker 1: in terms of the playoff and the Oregon and Penn
- 28:12Speaker 1: State games having a lot to do with that. Realistically,
- 28:16Speaker 1: what do you think India has to do to get
- 28:17Speaker 1: back at the playoff? I mean, I think if they
- 28:19Speaker 1: only lose one of those two, if they only lose
- 28:22Speaker 1: one game, they're likely going to be in. But if
- 28:24Speaker 1: they lose both, do you think how much do you
- 28:26Speaker 1: think it matters? How close those games are and obviously
- 28:30Speaker 1: what other teams do around the country.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Too, it matters. It matters a ton. I think for sure,
- 28:35Speaker 4: if Indiana lose is just one game, they're in the playoffs.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I don't think there's a debate about that. It matters
- 28:41Speaker 4: a ton because it's gonna It's tough for me to
- 28:43Speaker 4: give an outlook right now in terms of like, will
- 28:45Speaker 4: they won't they if they lose both, because it comes
- 28:48Speaker 4: down to the final score and then the final score
- 28:50Speaker 4: of other teams. I look at a team like Florida State. Right,
- 28:53Speaker 4: Florida State this weekend has Miami. If Florida State loses
- 28:56Speaker 4: to Miami, now they have two losses to Virginia and Miami. Right,
- 29:00Speaker 4: Florida State wins out. In a hypothetical who gets in
- 29:04Speaker 4: between an Indiana team with two losses to Penn State
- 29:06Speaker 4: and Oregon on the road or a Florida State team
- 29:09Speaker 4: with losses to Virginia and Miami. It's tough. It's tough
- 29:13Speaker 4: to decide. I mean, it just matters final score. Those
- 29:15Speaker 4: are the kinds of teams that are going to be
- 29:17Speaker 4: on the bubble. I'll say this like, if Indiana wants
- 29:20Speaker 4: to control its own destiny, gonna have to win at
- 29:23Speaker 4: least one of the two games that Oregon or at
- 29:25Speaker 4: Penn State. If not, it's just up in the air.
- 29:27Speaker 4: It's up in the air. It's going to depend on
- 29:29Speaker 4: how many teams from the ACC megan in, whether the
- 29:31Speaker 4: Big twelve beats each other up, and then if the
- 29:36Speaker 4: SEC can get five or six, or who's at the
- 29:39Speaker 4: top of the Big ten. It's gonna be a lot
- 29:40Speaker 4: of question marks and so it'll be really interesting to see.
- 29:43Speaker 4: But I think staying competitive puts Indiana in a really
- 29:46Speaker 4: good position for both the Penn State and Orgony, and
- 29:48Speaker 4: if those are competitive games, I really do like Indiana's
- 29:51Speaker 4: chances at making the playoffs.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Again.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Well, Quinn, thanks for taking the time to come on
- 29:56Speaker 1: the show. Looking forward to having you on more as
- 29:59Speaker 1: the season go along. Welcome to Inside the Hall, Welcome
- 30:01Speaker 1: to podcasts on the Brink and on the audience is
- 30:03Speaker 1: going to be excited to read your story. Went I
- 30:06Speaker 1: know we talked about maybe a story coming out here
- 30:09Speaker 1: in the next couple of days.
- 30:09Speaker 2: What are you working on just in terms of basketball
- 30:11Speaker 2: right now.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yeah, So I've got kind of a player feature background
- 30:16Speaker 4: that should be coming out. I'm not sure entirely quite yet,
- 30:19Speaker 4: but it's in the works. I've talked to a lot
- 30:21Speaker 4: of people and i think it should be a really
- 30:22Speaker 4: interesting one. And then I'll have a story coming out
- 30:25Speaker 4: either later today or maybe tomorrow about the event and
