- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Let's talk about sex.
- 0:34Yeah, even with Parkinson's. Now, not exactly something you
- 0:39hear in the neurologist office, right?
- 0:41But if you've noticed changes in desire or performance or
- 0:45physical comfort, you're definitely not alone.
- 0:49Erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness, loss of desire, or just
- 0:54feeling disconnected from your body or your partner.
- 0:58Well, these are real symptoms of Parkinson's.
- 1:01And they're not just aging, they're not just in your head,
- 1:05and they're not something to be ashamed of.
- 1:07So today, we're going there openly, honestly, and
- 1:12respectfully because connection, intimacy, and feeling wanted
- 1:17still matter, and they matter more now than ever.
- 1:22Well, welcome back to the channel.
- 1:24I'm so glad you're here. And if you're new here, my name
- 1:27is Bryce, and this is living with Parkinson's.
- 1:28The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 1:30Now, this channel is about telling the truth about
- 1:33Parkinson's with no filters. We talk about the stuff that no
- 1:37one else is saying out loud because living with Parkinson's
- 1:39takes more than medication and exercise.
- 1:42It takes honesty, it takes community, and it takes support.
- 1:46OK, Today's episode is when Parkinson's hits below the belt.
- 1:50Let's talk sexual health. So before we begin, I want you
- 1:53to take a deep breath, OK? There's no shame here.
- 1:57Just real talk that might finally make you feel seen.
- 2:01All right, let's start with something really simple.
- 2:05Sex is not just about sex, OK? It's about connection.
- 2:10It's about confidence. It's about feeling attractive.
- 2:15It's about feeling wanted, even when the body is changing all
- 2:18the time. And Parkinson's messes with it
- 2:21all, doesn't it? And not because you're doing
- 2:23anything wrong, but because the disease doesn't stop at
- 2:26movement. It affect, it affects blood
- 2:28flow, it affects hormone levels, it affects muscles, nerves,
- 2:33energy and mood. And yes, it affects
- 2:36relationships. OK, so let's break it down.
- 2:39Men first. I don't know why men, but let's
- 2:41go with men first. Let's talk.
- 2:43Erectile dysfunction is extremely common in Parkinson's.
- 2:47You might notice a delayed response, difficulty, it's
- 2:50difficulty staying erect, or even a loss of function.
- 2:54Now, it could show up early or it could show up much later.
- 2:58And it's not just physical stress.
- 3:01Fatigue, medications, and self-image all play a role.
- 3:06You know, there were times that I avoided intimacy altogether
- 3:10because I was worried it wouldn't work.
- 3:14I didn't want to disappoint, right?
- 3:17I felt it felt easier just not to try than to try and fail.
- 3:22But you know what's worse than feeling embarrassed?
- 3:25It's feeling alone. And I don't want you to feel
- 3:28that. Now, for women, well, women face
- 3:32different. They, they, they face different,
- 3:34but just as real, real, the challenges.
- 3:37And they often get less attention.
- 3:39OK, things like vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, a Lord
- 3:45libido and changes in the sense in sensation or orgasm.
- 3:51Now, let's be honest, many women with Parkinson's are also
- 3:54caregivers, right? So they're managing meds, the
- 3:57house, appointments, and sometimes for others too.
- 4:00And by the time intimacy is even possible, they're exhausted,
- 4:03disconnected, and maybe even resentful.
- 4:06And that's real and that's valid and it deserves attention, not
- 4:11shame. OK, now for everyone, even if
- 4:17the mechanics are OK, sometimes the feelings aren't right.
- 4:21You might feel less confident in your body.
- 4:24You might feel awkward about your tremors or your stiffness.
- 4:28You might be so conscious about facial masking or nervous about
- 4:31freezing or dyskinesia mid movement or mid moment or just
- 4:37feel emotionally flat just because you know what, your
- 4:41dopamine is tanked and your partner might not know how to
- 4:46ask or how to help. But let me say this clearly, you
- 4:51are still worthy of connection. Your needs haven't disappeared.
- 4:56They've just they've just changed and that's OK.
- 4:59So the hardest part for me was bringing it up.
- 5:03So I want to give you a few ways to open the door.
- 5:06Here's one right? You could say this.
- 5:08I've been feeling a little disconnected.
- 5:10Can we talk more a little bit about intimacy and what it looks
- 5:14like now? Right.
- 5:15Just some opening lines to get the conversation started.
- 5:18Here's another one. This disease has changed a lot
- 5:22for me and I miss feeling close to you.
- 5:25Or maybe you could say I'm worried about how Parkinson's is
- 5:28affecting us physically and I want us to be OK now.
- 5:33Listen, caregivers, caregivers and partners, listen with
- 5:37compassion. Don't jump in with fixes, just
- 5:39listen. Be present because that's
- 5:42everything. And if it's too hard to say,
- 5:45then you know, what I would suggest is bring it, bring it,
- 5:48bring it up at a doctor's appointment together.
- 5:51Don't go by yourself because then you come home with a big
- 5:53list of here's what you need to do and here's what we need to do
- 5:56and and let's go in this together.
- 5:58OK, Anyway, So what can help? Where are we at?
- 6:01What are we going to do? Well, there are options.
- 6:04There's a lot, you know, there's a lot more than people realize
- 6:08for vaginal dryness. And I say this, you know, to be
- 6:10also checked with your, your doctor, all this always, you
- 6:13know, there's also, you know, menopause can play some, some
- 6:17part in this as well. So just make sure you check with
- 6:19your doctor. So for vaginal dryness, you can
- 6:22use lubricants like regularly, not just in the moment.
- 6:26You can ask your doctor about estrogen creams.
- 6:29They seem to work really well, what I hear.
- 6:31And there's pelvic floor therapy that can also help with the
- 6:33tightness or pain for men and erectile dysfunction, you know,
- 6:38meds like Viagra, Cialis may help, but only with your
- 6:42neurologist, OK, or your doctor's OK.
- 6:45And sometimes tweaking dopamine meds help too.
- 6:47So again, always a talk with the doctor for everyone.
- 6:51Some of the things that you can try to do is you can try new
- 6:54positions that don't strain your joints.
- 6:57You know, be creative. Use pillows or wedges for
- 7:00support if you have to. And another thing you could try,
- 7:04you know that that actually is I've heard helps really, it
- 7:06really helps a lot is schedule your intimacy when your meds are
- 7:09working best, right? So when you're going to be at
- 7:11your peak performance so that you don't have to worry about
- 7:13being embarrassed or not being able to perform, you schedule it
- 7:16right. Here's a really good time for
- 7:18this to start. OK, you could.
- 7:22Another last tip here is focus on touch and closeness and
- 7:26pleasure. It's not just about performance.
- 7:29It's really not about performance at all, right?
- 7:31It's really about pleasure, pleasure for you and your
- 7:33partner. So focus on that.
- 7:35Focus on touch, the closeness, eye contact, soft, soft, just
- 7:39just being close, OK. And you know, if, if these are
- 7:44things that you steal, that are really, really that you struggle
- 7:46with or you're dealing with, well, you know what, there's a
- 7:48lot of professionals who can help you.
- 7:51There are pelvic floor physio, OK, a urologist or gynecologist
- 7:57that are familiar with Parkinson's are a big help sex
- 8:00therapist who specialize in chronic illness.
- 8:03Like this is a thing. It's not just a you thing.
- 8:05It's a thing. And they're actual professionals
- 8:07out there that will help. And remember, remember, really,
- 8:11I want you to like, listen, remember this, this isn't about
- 8:13fixing it, right? It's about staying connected,
- 8:16even if the connection looks different now.
- 8:20And I don't know, have you experienced changes in your
- 8:22sexual health since your, your diagnosis?
- 8:25Do you feel like no one's talking about it?
- 8:27You know, drop a comment below. And and if you'd rather keep it
- 8:30private, then you know, I'd invite you to the inner circle,
- 8:33right? It's our real confidential,
- 8:35judgement free community where you can chat and talk.
- 8:38It's not just it's not a Facebook group, it's not a face,
- 8:40it's not a zoom call. It's a space where you can ask
- 8:43the hard questions, share your experiences or just listen and
- 8:47feel seen. And you know what, yes, these
- 8:49kind of conversations, they'll happen there too, right?
- 8:52There's a link in the description below.
- 8:54You're invited. Take it's my invitation to you
- 8:56because sometimes you got to go deeper on these things.
- 8:59And sometimes in a public forum is probably not the best place
- 9:02in the confidential place where you're surrounded by people who
- 9:05get it, who have been there and are going through it.
- 9:08It it's the easiest spot. So do yourself a favor, check it
- 9:12out. Link in the description below.
- 9:14But here's something I want you to also also remember this, OK?
- 9:18That Parkinson's, it doesn't just, it doesn't erase desire.
- 9:23OK? It doesn't mean you stop needing
- 9:26affection or closeness, but it does make those things harder to
- 9:30talk about. So today, guess what?
- 9:32We talked. And if it felt awkward, that's
- 9:36OK. That means it's real.
- 9:39And real is where the healing starts.
- 9:43Do you know that Parkinson's doesn't kill your sex life?
- 9:46Silence does. There's a pricism for you.
- 9:49So keep speaking up and keep seeking connection.
- 9:52And as always, you keep doing life.
- 9:55And you keep doing it today. Parkinson's may be part of your
- 10:01life, but it doesn't get to define it.
