- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi team. Welcome to the show.
- 0:24Thank you for listening today. In this episode, I want to talk
- 0:27to you about how to make big decisions, how to make hard
- 0:30decisions in life and business and relationships.
- 0:34This matters so much, mostly because it's one of the top
- 0:37complaints from people, from clients, from people out in the
- 0:39world. They really struggle with
- 0:42confidently making decisions, especially decisions that feel
- 0:46weighty or difficult. One of the big reasons I think
- 0:48this is, is because people lack self trust.
- 0:52They lack confidence in themselves to make a decision
- 0:56and really stick to it and feel good about it for the long term.
- 1:01This conversation feels so important to have because you
- 1:04make your decisions every single day and your decisions are what
- 1:08make your life. And so if you don't know how to
- 1:10make high quality decisions, you aren't going to be able to build
- 1:14or design A life that excites you and brings fulfillment to
- 1:18you. Whether it's in your business or
- 1:20your relationships or your health or your life, making
- 1:23decisions is a key skill. It is.
- 1:26It's a skill that you can get better at that will serve you in
- 1:31every area of your life. It's something that I work on
- 1:34with almost every single client because it's so crucial to them
- 1:38feeling the peace and joy and fulfillment that they want.
- 1:42Before we go further, there's something that we need to
- 1:45acknowledge about decisions, and that is that every yes that you
- 1:50give to something is a no to something else, and every no
- 1:55that you give to something is a yes to something else.
- 1:59And most people are not connected to what they're
- 2:03actually choosing when they're making decisions.
- 2:06They just decide based on reactions or guilt or fear or
- 2:10urgency. And then they wonder why they
- 2:13feel stuck and their decisions aren't taking them in the
- 2:15direction that they want to go. It's often that I say to people,
- 2:19your current reality is the product of all the yeses and the
- 2:23Nos that you've given in the past.
- 2:25It's something that we have to take ownership of, the decisions
- 2:28that we make every single day in our lives.
- 2:31The big problem is that so many people make decisions from a
- 2:34place of disempowerment, not empowerment.
- 2:37That's the guilt, the fear, the urgency, the reaction.
- 2:41They think that they're choosing, but they're really
- 2:43just reacting to things. They say no to opportunities
- 2:46because they're afraid. They say yes to people or things
- 2:50because they want to please them or they want to avoid conflict.
- 2:54They delay a decision because they're overwhelmed and they
- 2:58don't really want to deal with it, but they might call it
- 3:00wisdom. They're not connected to the
- 3:04real cost of waiting or the cost of acting, meaning they don't
- 3:09understand the importance of a timeline around a decision.
- 3:14And I think the thing to home in on right now is the empowerment
- 3:17piece because empowerment is about agency and it's about
- 3:21ownership. You know, we're always talking
- 3:24about ownership as it relates to your ability to have powerful
- 3:27impact in the world. And if you are not in your
- 3:30power, it is really difficult to have the lasting impact and to
- 3:34be able to amplify your impact in the way that you want to.
- 3:38When you are empowered, you are connected to what you're
- 3:42choosing. You are connected to the yeses
- 3:44and the Nos that you're giving. You know exactly what you're
- 3:48saying yes to and you know exactly what you're saying no
- 3:51to. When you're making these
- 3:52decisions and you're happy, you're content with the trade
- 3:56off. You can make decisions based on
- 3:59clarity. You are moving towards
- 4:02something, not away from something.
- 4:04That's what empowerment is about.
- 4:07Disempowerment is the opposite. Disempowerment is about
- 4:10avoidance. It's about putting your head in
- 4:13the sand. It's perhaps feeling like you're
- 4:15the victim in your life and things are happening to you, not
- 4:18for you. And when you're in that place of
- 4:21disempowerment, you are not connected to what you're
- 4:23choosing. You don't feel clear about the
- 4:25trade-offs that you're making. Your choices are reactive.
- 4:28You're typically running away from something instead of
- 4:31running toward something. It can often be that your
- 4:34decisions are rooted in blame, or it can be that you make a
- 4:37decision based off of your external factors instead of your
- 4:40internal conviction or intuition or general knowing about your
- 4:45life. And the tough part about this is
- 4:48that empowered and disempowered decisions can sometimes look the
- 4:51same from the outside. And it's really important for us
- 4:54to understand the difference between the two because whatever
- 4:57big decision that you're making in your life right now, we want
- 5:00to make sure that you're coming to that decision from a place of
- 5:03empowerment. Whether it's a yes or a no, you
- 5:06want to be in a place of empowerment so that you can
- 5:09avoid living a disempowered life.
- 5:13When we think about decision making, we can break it down
- 5:15into four different categories of decision.
- 5:18There's #1 empowered action. And this is action that's rooted
- 5:22in clarity and vision for your life.
- 5:25Empowered action means, I know what this will cost me, this
- 5:28decision, but the gain is worth it.
- 5:30You're clear it's not a maybe, it's not a someday, it's just a
- 5:34hell yes. So you're not hedging your bets
- 5:36and you're not hoping. You're just stepping towards
- 5:39something on purpose with full ownership.
- 5:43And you know the results that you want are up to you.
- 5:46So you're saying yes to doing the work that's required of you.
- 5:50That's empowered action. The second type of decision is
- 5:52empowered waiting. This is waiting.
- 5:55That's full of intention. So it's not avoidance, it's not
- 5:58passive, it's about saying I know what a yes will cost me and
- 6:03the gain is not worth the cost in this season.
- 6:06So it's a no for right now. For example, maybe you're
- 6:09already committed to something else.
- 6:11Maybe you're committed to a project.
- 6:13Maybe you are taking a season of rest.
- 6:16Maybe you are investing your energy and your resources into
- 6:19something else. And by saying no to this thing
- 6:21that's curly in front of you, you're simply continuing your
- 6:24yes from the past to a previous empowered decision.
- 6:28You're following through and having an integrity around the
- 6:31decision that you made in the past.
- 6:33The challenge with this one with empowered waiting is knowing
- 6:36when the waiting is over. And so a great question to ask
- 6:38yourself is when will I know that I'm ready to say yes to a
- 6:42new level of action or a new decision?
- 6:46The third one is disempowered action.
- 6:48And this is action that looks really decisive, but it's
- 6:50actually just reactive. And this is a place where a lot
- 6:52of people live. It's a yes to something based on
- 6:57guilt, pressure, fear, saboteurs.
- 7:01That saboteur behavior. Maybe it's to please somebody
- 7:04else. That people pleaser.
- 7:05Maybe it's because you don't want to seem like a failure.
- 7:08Perfectionism. You're saying yes to avoid
- 7:11conflict with your spouse or your parents or your boss.
- 7:14Maybe it's just to avoid discomfort.
- 7:17But disempowered action is so common, it often looks like
- 7:22busyness. People avoid big decisions or
- 7:26big things because they don't feel empowered.
- 7:29They stay really busy so that they don't have to face the
- 7:31discomfort of making these key decisions.
- 7:35The challenge with disempowered action is knowing why you're
- 7:39making decisions the way you are.
- 7:41And a question to ask yourself is am I doing this because I
- 7:44want it or because someone else wants it?
- 7:47Or what am I avoiding by staying busy?
- 7:49Those are two really powerful questions with this one.
- 7:52Finally, the 4th type of decision is disempowered
- 7:55waiting. And this is just procrastination
- 7:59dressed up as wisdom. You tell yourself you're not
- 8:02ready, but you don't even really know what ready looks like.
- 8:05I mean, are we ever really ready?
- 8:08People might be waiting because they're avoiding fear.
- 8:11There's no feedback, there's no reflection.
- 8:13They might recognize the cost of action, but they don't know how
- 8:16much it's already costing them to wait.
- 8:20And the challenge with disempowered waiting is
- 8:22understanding the cost of their inaction.
- 8:26So the question would be, how much is waiting on making a
- 8:31crucial decision around this costing me?
- 8:34What is the cost of this, and what results would I gain from
- 8:37action? Or you could ask yourself, how
- 8:39long am I willing to pay the cost of not getting those
- 8:43results? All of those questions have
- 8:45really helped me understand when I'm in a place of disempowerment
- 8:49and I'm just waiting instead of moving.
- 8:52So my challenge to you this week is to think about what are the
- 8:55key decisions that you have going on in your life right now?
- 8:58What are the things that you need to decide around?
- 9:02This could be health, it could be relationships, it could be
- 9:04work, it could be anything, but I know that you have some big
- 9:07decisions to make in your life, probably even this week.
- 9:12The bottom line is whether you take action or you wait, that
- 9:16doesn't matter to me. What's important is that you're
- 9:18coming from a place of empowerment and not
- 9:21disempowerment. That's the key.
- 9:22Because every yes is a no to something else and every no is a
- 9:26yes to something else. Because every decision that we
- 9:29make is what builds the life in front of us and we want to make
- 9:32sure we have clarity and vision around that.
- 9:35So here are a few questions that you might ask yourself to help
- 9:37sort out your thoughts around these decisions.
- 9:40What do I gain from taking action?
- 9:42What do I gain from waiting? What does it cost me to take
- 9:47action and what does it cost me to wait?
- 9:50Answer those questions about any major decision that you have to
- 9:53make in your life right now and I promise it will give you so
- 9:56much clarity. I appreciate you being here.
