Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's going on everyone? Emily and Badi here you were
- 0:21Speaker 1: listening to five Minute Friday from Hurdle Live from Tokyo.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It's been what a week. I feel very grateful that
- 0:32Speaker 1: when I travel typically i'm more often than not really
- 0:36Speaker 1: good with sleep. It's been over a year since I've
- 0:40Speaker 1: been to this part of the world. I came to
- 0:42Speaker 1: Tokyo for the first time last spring for the marathon,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and I don't remember having this much trouble with my
- 0:54Speaker 1: jet lag. I got something like four hours of sleep
- 0:58Speaker 1: the first night. I graduated to a little bit less
- 1:02Speaker 1: at three hours of sleep the second night. So I
- 1:06Speaker 1: am open to alternative suggestions on how to sort this out.
- 1:11Speaker 1: If anyone wants to hit my DMS over at Emily
- 1:14Speaker 1: A Bandi on Social I digress. I am talking about
- 1:19Speaker 1: doing the best I can with what I have. So
- 1:22Speaker 1: yesterday I did my long run for the week, and
- 1:28Speaker 1: for context, it is something like one hundred degrees real
- 1:32Speaker 1: feel in Tokyo right now. It's quite warm and the
- 1:36Speaker 1: humidity is up there. And I went into the morning
- 1:40Speaker 1: with a lot of reservations and a good deal of nerves.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I understood that it was going to be hard. I
- 1:49Speaker 1: understood many of the things that were working against me.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It was, like I said, so warm. I did get
- 1:58Speaker 1: five hours of sleep on a flight over, my best
- 2:00Speaker 1: night of sleep yet, and I am in a completely
- 2:06Speaker 1: different place, not in my own bed, et cetera. However,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I also recognize that I can do hard things, and
- 2:14Speaker 1: so yesterday I went out there and I decided to
- 2:18Speaker 1: consciously take note of the things that were going well.
- 2:23Speaker 1: So let's take this back. Before I even went outside,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I was up gosh, an hour and a half or
- 2:30Speaker 1: two hours earlier than my alarm because of the jet lag.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So I wake up and I'm like, okay, I'm going
- 2:38Speaker 1: to try to fall asleep for a bit, and when
- 2:41Speaker 1: it doesn't work, I'm just gonna stick it out. That's
- 2:44Speaker 1: exactly what happened. And I thought to myself, Okay, what
- 2:48Speaker 1: is good about this moment? Okay, slow morning, super quiet,
- 2:51Speaker 1: let's enjoy it. Awesome. I journaled, I played nice music.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I made a pour over coffee in my room because
- 2:59Speaker 1: that is what's accessible here to me. Right now. I
- 3:04Speaker 1: warmed up. It was very serene, candidly. I get outside,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and I do not remember it being this bright the
- 3:13Speaker 1: last time I was here, but it is so beautiful.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I got outside at five point fifteen to start my
- 3:19Speaker 1: run and it was already completely bright out, as though
- 3:22Speaker 1: it was like seven fifteen in New York City. I
- 3:26Speaker 1: get out there and my first thought is this weather
- 3:29Speaker 1: isn't as bad as I anticipated. It was oppressive, don't
- 3:34Speaker 1: get me wrong, but it wasn't as bad as I anticipated.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And then I created a root using Strava, and if
- 3:42Speaker 1: you don't follow me over there, there's also a hurdler's
- 3:44Speaker 1: group that you can search for all and get in
- 3:46Speaker 1: the show notes. But I made a root on Strava
- 3:50Speaker 1: and just hoped that it would be the best possible
- 3:56Speaker 1: because I don't know Tokyo that well, and I felt
- 3:59Speaker 1: as though I got really lucky at the route. It
- 4:01Speaker 1: wasn't super hilly. I was able to do a bit
- 4:04Speaker 1: of sight seeing, and everything was smooth sailing, all things considered,
- 4:09Speaker 1: until I got to mile fourteen, when by accident, I
- 4:15Speaker 1: realized that I made the route go alongside of a
- 4:19Speaker 1: river that was in direct sunlight for a mile and
- 4:23Speaker 1: a half and when I tell you, I was melting
- 4:27Speaker 1: understatement understatement of the day. Although it is quite early
- 4:30Speaker 1: when I'm recording this, my time I get to the
- 4:34Speaker 1: end and I'm venting about this to a friend over text,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and as I start my jog again and continue on
- 4:43Speaker 1: my way, I think to myself, there is no way
- 4:48Speaker 1: at all that race day would ever be any worse
- 4:52Speaker 1: than this. And sometimes that really helps the visualization, right
- 4:56Speaker 1: when you think to yourself, what's the worst case scenario? Oh, okay,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I can evaluate that and you realize that the worst
- 5:05Speaker 1: case scenario likely isn't that bad. There is absolutely no way.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'm like literally going to knock on the wall very
- 5:12Speaker 1: lightly right now. There is no way that it's going
- 5:14Speaker 1: to be one hundred degrees in one hundred percent humidity
- 5:17Speaker 1: in Chicago in October when I run this marathon. It's
- 5:19Speaker 1: just not going to happen. And so it made me.
- 5:22Speaker 1: It transported me right back to this run I did
- 5:25Speaker 1: in the rain training for Boston in twenty eighteen, famously
- 5:29Speaker 1: awful weather, crazy winds, downpour, hail, the year that does
- 5:34Speaker 1: one Boston, I never ran in the rain, and I
- 5:38Speaker 1: ran in the rain for what felt like the first
- 5:40Speaker 1: time in my life for a long run. That training
- 5:43Speaker 1: cycle and that rainy long run instilled in me that
- 5:48Speaker 1: I am capable of moving forward through something that is challenging.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And then ultimately, when I ran that Boston, I remembered
- 5:55Speaker 1: when I got hard, that you pushed through this once
- 5:57Speaker 1: before and you are capable of doing it again. And
- 6:01Speaker 1: so that's really where I went during this run yesterday,
- 6:04Speaker 1: during this difficult moment, I was reminded that I can
- 6:07Speaker 1: do hard things and it can still be challenging. Something
- 6:12Speaker 1: can be challenging and I can still do it. And
- 6:15Speaker 1: so I know, I like in a lot of life
- 6:20Speaker 1: analogies to things that happened to me on the run,
- 6:24Speaker 1: But it's because it's so applicable, whether you are yourself
- 6:29Speaker 1: someone that laces up or perhaps you indulge in challenging
- 6:33Speaker 1: activities in other ways. I support whatever your situation is,
- 6:38Speaker 1: but know that when we persist, when we conquer these hurdles,
- 6:45Speaker 1: it is resiliency building. It is something that helps us
- 6:48Speaker 1: come back stronger each and every time. So if you're
- 6:52Speaker 1: in the middle of a difficult season, or maybe you're
- 6:55Speaker 1: just going through a difficult moment trying to conquer a
- 6:59Speaker 1: difficult hurdle, know that it can be difficult and you
- 7:04Speaker 1: can do it. And I think that is where the
- 7:08Speaker 1: magic is. My question for you this week, how can
- 7:12Speaker 1: you reframe a difficult moment that's going on in your life?
- 7:16Speaker 1: What are the positives that this is bringing to you?
- 7:19Speaker 1: Think about the positives of a difficult moment in your
- 7:23Speaker 1: life that you are navigating right now. How can you
- 7:27Speaker 1: use this and think of it as a moment to
- 7:30Speaker 1: strengthen your resiliency muscle? And now a listener question. Hey Emily,
- 7:36Speaker 1: longtime listener here. I love your five minute Friday, So
- 7:39Speaker 1: here's a question. What shoes do you have your eye
- 7:41Speaker 1: on for the Chicago Marathon. I've run two marathons so far,
- 7:44Speaker 1: each in different shoes, and for my upcoming third marathon
- 7:47Speaker 1: in December, I'm interested in trying something new. I'd love
- 7:50Speaker 1: to hear what you're considering for yourself raced A shoe
- 7:52Speaker 1: choice is always such a fun topic. Love your podcast
- 7:55Speaker 1: and cheering for you. Thanks tay So. I will be
- 7:59Speaker 1: right Chicago in the Alpha Fly three from Nike. I
- 8:05Speaker 1: have tried many carbon plated shoes, and I typically opt
- 8:08Speaker 1: for a carbon plated shoe on race day because of
- 8:10Speaker 1: the benefits of wearing something like this, the forward propulsion,
- 8:14Speaker 1: the running economy. I don't train super often. In the
- 8:17Speaker 1: Alpha Fly, I will wear it for a couple of
- 8:19Speaker 1: long runs during the cycle. I save that feeling for
- 8:23Speaker 1: race day, so it feels like and mentally it's like
- 8:26Speaker 1: my personal super shoe. I have plenty of other super
- 8:29Speaker 1: shoes that I like for different reasons. For instance, I've
- 8:32Speaker 1: been running in the on Cloud Boom Max in Tokyo.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It is so sturdy and secure while also having a
- 8:39Speaker 1: plate as well. However, that extra boost I'm talking about
- 8:43Speaker 1: it doesn't feel as noticeable in that shoe, So an
- 8:46Speaker 1: option like that, for instance, might be good for someone
- 8:49Speaker 1: who's never used a super shoe before. I'm a big
- 8:52Speaker 1: fan of SOCNY super shoe the endorfin Elite. I really
- 8:56Speaker 1: like Brooks Hyperionally. There's so many options on the market,
- 9:00Speaker 1: and I'm really listing super shoes again here for a
- 9:03Speaker 1: race day option. But know yourself and know your body,
- 9:06Speaker 1: and remember the golden rule. Nothing new on race day.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So if you're someone that feels a lot more comfortable
- 9:15Speaker 1: in something with more support, more cushioning, it's okay not
- 9:20Speaker 1: to use a super shoe on race day. You want
- 9:22Speaker 1: to go with what you know, You want to go
- 9:24Speaker 1: with what makes you feel comfortable. Of course, always here
- 9:28Speaker 1: to answer other questions, feel free to reach out over
- 9:32Speaker 1: email and ask listener question to be featured in an
- 9:35Speaker 1: upcoming five minute Friday. That email address is hello at
