- 1:50Speaker 1: this Week one, twenty twenty five regular season edition of
- 1:54Speaker 1: Disguise Coverage, we will be getting into the matchups that
- 1:58Speaker 1: will decide the Buffalo Bills versus Baltimore Ravens Sunday night
- 2:03Speaker 1: prime time opener for the primetime schedule. I should say,
- 2:08Speaker 1: in the regular season of the NFL this year, a
- 2:11Speaker 1: matchup that I think not even just Bills and Ravens
- 2:14Speaker 1: fans have had circled NFL fans across the board the
- 2:17Speaker 1: game of the week in the league, it's developed into
- 2:19Speaker 1: a bit of a rivalry between the fan bases and
- 2:21Speaker 1: the players. The Bills have ended the Ravens season multiple
- 2:24Speaker 1: times in the playoffs over the past several years. The
- 2:27Speaker 1: Ravens kicked the Bills teeth in in the regular season.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Last year, you've got Lamar versus Allen and how that
- 2:33Speaker 1: is ignited and sparked the rivalry even further and fan
- 2:36Speaker 1: the flames between these two teams and fan bases. There's
- 2:39Speaker 1: a lot of fun things to talk about, and that's
- 2:41Speaker 1: without even getting into the schematics and the details and
- 2:44Speaker 1: the bones and the structure of what this matchup really
- 2:47Speaker 1: can be on both sides in this game, and that
- 2:50Speaker 1: is what we're going to talk about on this show.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And I say we because I am not alone. I
- 2:56Speaker 1: am joined as his tradition for Bills versus Ravens, I
- 2:59Speaker 1: am joined by mister Spencer Schultz, host of the Exit
- 3:03Speaker 1: fifty two podcasts. Spence, I appreciate you taking the time.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Thank you for joining me for I think as your
- 3:08Speaker 1: like fourth or fifth appearance spanning over several years. I
- 3:11Speaker 1: appreciate you. Welcome to the show.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Thanks an, good to be here. Yeah, we've we've done
- 3:14Speaker 4: this a few times. These two teams just can't stop
- 3:16Speaker 4: playing each other. They just have become a marquee matchup
- 3:19Speaker 4: and have some some fun playoff history and it's been
- 3:24Speaker 4: quite a few times.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So pumped to be here and talk some football, my friend.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I appreciate you being here. And yeah, it's it
- 3:29Speaker 1: started out as like.
- 3:31Speaker 2: You know, this is cool, like let's let's talk Paul.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And now I think it's gotten to the point we
- 3:34Speaker 1: were talking a little bit offline, just the intensity that
- 3:38Speaker 1: this rivalry kind of has and for each fan base
- 3:41Speaker 1: on both sides. They get started a couple of years
- 3:43Speaker 1: ago with The whole MVP discussion then continued last year
- 3:45Speaker 1: with the MVP discussion. For you, let's take off our
- 3:51Speaker 1: our fan hats completely. I'm sorry, let's take off our
- 3:54Speaker 1: analyst hats completely. Forget about scheme, structure, all that stuff.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Purely from a fan perspective, there is this rivalry for you, like,
- 4:01Speaker 1: how do you feel about Bills Ravens. Has it creeped up?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Is it purely just fun and you know your football
- 4:08Speaker 1: mind takes over purely forward or is there some kind
- 4:10Speaker 1: of like, you know what, I think I hate the
- 4:12Speaker 1: Bills or I'm starting to hate the Bills. Is they
- 4:14Speaker 1: is there is start starting to creep in a little
- 4:15Speaker 1: bit for you or.
- 4:16Speaker 4: No, I think there's like some you've been in my way,
- 4:21Speaker 4: and especially the Bills have have done in the playoffs
- 4:23Speaker 4: against the Ravens. So the Ravens can't just look and say, oh,
- 4:27Speaker 4: we lost the Chiefs in the NFC Championship. The Bills
- 4:28Speaker 4: have bounced them in Buffalo twice, So I think there's
- 4:31Speaker 4: some of that. I think that the teams probably feel
- 4:33Speaker 4: that way. They just keep playing, so I think they,
- 4:36Speaker 4: you know, keep getting frustrated at one another. The Ravens
- 4:38Speaker 4: have won a couple the Bills have won some probably
- 4:40Speaker 4: the more important ones there. So I do think more
- 4:43Speaker 4: so just fan perspective, like we will simply look back
- 4:47Speaker 4: at two really good teams. I personally think both of
- 4:52Speaker 4: them will win a Lombardi.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Trophy in this era of football. So I think.
- 4:57Speaker 4: We're gonna look back on this years from now. Is Wow,
- 5:00Speaker 4: it was Mahomes, it was Alan, it was Burrow, it
- 5:04Speaker 4: was Jackson, it was the Ravens, the Chiefs, the Bills.
- 5:06Speaker 4: And how cool was it that there were these teams
- 5:09Speaker 4: that just won and won and won sixty five seventy
- 5:12Speaker 4: percent of games and just kept going at it and
- 5:14Speaker 4: kept going at it. And I think the consistency from
- 5:18Speaker 4: really those three I'll say the Chiefs, of course, the
- 5:21Speaker 4: Bills and the Ravens has been remarkable. And if not
- 5:24Speaker 4: for the Chiefs, I mean the Bills and Ravens, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 4: might have quite a few AFC championships, quite a few
- 5:31Speaker 4: Super Bowl appearances, and probably a couple of Super Bowl rings.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So I think we.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Look back at the era of football, I think these
- 5:38Speaker 4: two teams have become tethered together, and I don't think
- 5:41Speaker 4: it's it's a little different. They're both really good all
- 5:45Speaker 4: the time. And I think rivalry, like when I think
- 5:47Speaker 4: of true rivalry, I think of a team that kind
- 5:50Speaker 4: of was awful and got in the other one's way,
- 5:53Speaker 4: But it's never that. So there's been some some interesting
- 5:57Speaker 4: dynamics across the board, and I think that because of that,
- 6:01Speaker 4: it's it's not you know, Vitrioll necessarily, but of course
- 6:04Speaker 4: Alan Burrow Brow or excuse me, Alan Jackson, Jackson, Allen
- 6:07Speaker 4: Alan Jackson, all those things have been just slammed through
- 6:11Speaker 4: our brain by ESPN.
- 6:13Speaker 2: By first take, by all of those. I think there
- 6:15Speaker 2: is some kind of like just fans are tired of it.
- 6:20Speaker 4: I think a little bit on both ends. I think
- 6:22Speaker 4: it's grown weary and grown a boring and that sends.
- 6:24Speaker 4: But when they play, it's absolutely electric.
- 6:26Speaker 1: That's fire. Yeah, that's fair. You know, it's funny. In
- 6:28Speaker 1: my as you were speaking there, I was thinking, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: we've talked offline about this, and I've said it on
- 6:33Speaker 1: the show before, Like I ed Reid is one of,
- 6:36Speaker 1: if not my favorite player of all time. And you know,
- 6:39Speaker 1: the Ravens were a nice respite for me when the
- 6:42Speaker 1: Bills were terrible in the drought. By like week six,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and the Bills were done, I'd be like, you know what, Okay,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I can root for the Ravens. And I spent so
- 6:48Speaker 1: much of my childhood just hating the Pittsburgh Steelers with
- 6:52Speaker 1: every fiber of my being. And I look back on
- 6:54Speaker 1: it now of like the Read versus Pala Model discussion,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and like, just you don't see safety plays like that anymore.
- 7:00Speaker 1: You don't see defense like that anymore. And how cool
- 7:03Speaker 1: that rivalry was and how cool those games were, and
- 7:06Speaker 1: you know, kind of similar to even Bill's Ravens to
- 7:08Speaker 1: a agree, like the Ravens would get him in the
- 7:09Speaker 1: regular season, but Pittsburgh was always in the way in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the playoffs. But then I remember the one year when
- 7:13Speaker 1: the Ravens finally got him with the Steve Smith year,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and I was, oh, I was just so it's so
- 7:18Speaker 1: cool to kind of be in it within the moment.
- 7:20Speaker 1: But I do think like the emotional side takes you
- 7:23Speaker 1: out of it a little bit, and then when you
- 7:25Speaker 1: look back on a year from now, it's like, man,
- 7:27Speaker 1: like that was just really good football and that was
- 7:28Speaker 1: a good time. But when you're like in the moment,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and I understand it for some fans like and maybe
- 7:32Speaker 1: it is tied to, like, you know, youth and having
- 7:34Speaker 1: more energy or passion for that. I guess that. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: it's easy to get lost in. And I think back
- 7:38Speaker 1: to those times. Man, I just I hated Ben and
- 7:41Speaker 1: I hated Brown, and I hated Emmanuel Sanders and Mike
- 7:45Speaker 1: Wallace and Le'Veon Bell and their whole offensive line. And
- 7:48Speaker 1: I hated Brett Keesol and Casey Hampton. Like, I just
- 7:50Speaker 1: spent so much time hating the Steelers because of what
- 7:53Speaker 1: they did every year. And it's funny to kind of
- 7:55Speaker 1: a little be on the opposite side now a bit
- 7:57Speaker 1: with the Bills, and then we can still bond over
- 7:59Speaker 1: the Chiefs being terrible and annoying the hell out of
- 8:01Speaker 1: us every year. Yeah, it's fun fun fun mix. Speaking
- 8:06Speaker 1: of fun mix, what Spence and I are going to
- 8:08Speaker 1: do in this episode, as we do here on the
- 8:11Speaker 1: nd season episodes of Disguise coverage, We're going to focus
- 8:14Speaker 1: on the top three matchups that will decide or that
- 8:16Speaker 1: we think will decide Bills versus Ravens. It could be
- 8:19Speaker 1: very granular. It could be a specific player or a
- 8:22Speaker 1: specific situation element. It could be large scale, like one
- 8:26Speaker 1: entire side of the ball, versus the other, anything and
- 8:28Speaker 1: everything in between, from as large and wide scale of
- 8:31Speaker 1: a net as possible, all the way down to his
- 8:32Speaker 1: granular and his niche of a possible answer. For those
- 8:35Speaker 1: of you joining us live and playing from home, feel
- 8:37Speaker 1: free to put your answers into the chat. Let us
- 8:40Speaker 1: know what you're watching for, who you're watching for, what
- 8:43Speaker 1: you think will decide the game and why, what you
- 8:45Speaker 1: think of our picks and our choices. Feel free to
- 8:48Speaker 1: do all of that stuff. Spence, you are the guest
- 8:51Speaker 1: and don't want to make sure that I get you
- 8:53Speaker 1: out on time, so you will go first. I don't
- 8:56Speaker 1: know if you have them ranked. If you do, that's cool.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Feel free to go and whatever order you want, or
- 9:00Speaker 1: if they're all just equal, that's cool too. Feel free
- 9:02Speaker 1: to lead off with your first matchup that you think
- 9:05Speaker 1: will decide Bills versus Ravens in Week one.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought about getting a little more freaky with
- 9:09Speaker 4: this one and maybe a little more existential, but I
- 9:11Speaker 4: am going to rank, and in my ranking, I think
- 9:13Speaker 4: it's we've seen the Ravens beat the Bills in one way,
- 9:17Speaker 4: and when the Bills can handle this matchup, I think
- 9:21Speaker 4: they went and I think it's the Ravens pass rush
- 9:24Speaker 4: against the Bills really consistent five and the ability for
- 9:28Speaker 4: the Bills at times to keep it at five and
- 9:34Speaker 4: make it You have to bring pressure if you want
- 9:38Speaker 4: a pressure Josh, and Josh is good against pressure and
- 9:40Speaker 4: especially when you start to add five and six. So
- 9:43Speaker 4: to me, I look at where have these teams added.
- 9:47Speaker 4: And for the Ravens, they've added to their pass rush.
- 9:51Speaker 4: They drafted Mike Green, they continue to bring back Kyle
- 9:56Speaker 4: van Noy, They have really emphasize development of guys like
- 10:02Speaker 4: Tavius Robinson, a Dafe Oway, and they want Travis Jones
- 10:07Speaker 4: a step up into a bigger role. So I think
- 10:09Speaker 4: that they have added to their coaching staff.
- 10:11Speaker 2: They've added Mike.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Green, who could be an impact pass rusher, could be
- 10:16Speaker 4: someone that could maybe sort of almost actually tackle Josh
- 10:20Speaker 4: Allen and bring him down when he's moving a little
- 10:23Speaker 4: bit from from what we've seen of him in pursuit
- 10:25Speaker 4: and his kind of size and skill set and things
- 10:27Speaker 4: like that. So I look at a Ravens team that
- 10:31Speaker 4: couldn't touch Josh Allen in the slippery field in high
- 10:35Speaker 4: Mark to save their life. And he was calm, cool,
- 10:38Speaker 4: collected and delivered to win, march down the field a
- 10:40Speaker 4: couple times, took a big lead, made the Ravens have
- 10:42Speaker 4: to press. The Ravens don't press well in January on
- 10:44Speaker 4: the road. They got you know, close, but just got
- 10:48Speaker 4: behind the eight ball in that regard. So I think,
- 10:52Speaker 4: simply can the Ravens hit on Josh Allen and pull
- 10:56Speaker 4: on Josh Allen and disrupt him enough. And he's a
- 11:00Speaker 4: cool customer at this point, like him and Lamar there,
- 11:03Speaker 4: they don't care. They don't care. It's not like Jared
- 11:05Speaker 4: Goff out there. You can't rattle them very easily. But
- 11:09Speaker 4: to me, if the Ravens can't get pressure to some
- 11:12Speaker 4: extent against Spencer Brown, Dion Dawkins and that nice consistent
- 11:17Speaker 4: three in the middle there, then I think the Bills
- 11:21Speaker 4: will coast unless the Ravens can put up a remarkable performance.
- 11:24Speaker 4: And you know, the Ravens picked on a a We'll
- 11:28Speaker 4: talk a little more about other things, but the Ravens
- 11:29Speaker 4: kind of took it to the Bills in Baltimore.
- 11:31Speaker 2: But they're missing some guys.
- 11:33Speaker 4: They've got those guys and they added Joey Bosa, so
- 11:36Speaker 4: I think it might be a little bit tough for
- 11:37Speaker 4: the Ravens to really have a true shot at taking
- 11:40Speaker 4: a notable lead, getting the Bills to press all those
- 11:43Speaker 4: things if they can't get pressure with their combinations of
- 11:48Speaker 4: pass rush. And I look at a dafe Oway, Nomine Madebike,
- 11:51Speaker 4: Travis Jones, Kyle van Noy, Mike Green, Tavius Robinson, David Ajabo,
- 11:56Speaker 4: Roderick Washington as a really good group, like a premier
- 11:59Speaker 4: group the league and the Ravens haven't really had this
- 12:01Speaker 4: kind of depth of true dudes as rushers. So I
- 12:06Speaker 4: look at that matchup as one that I think is
- 12:08Speaker 4: most important in this game.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Oh, it's a good way to lead off. You know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you hit on so many I It's it's funny. I've
- 12:17Speaker 1: been doing like this type of like theme for the
- 12:19Speaker 1: nd season show for so many years, and I always
- 12:21Speaker 1: struggle with like trying to rank my answers. There's like
- 12:23Speaker 1: so many things that I think are cool and I
- 12:24Speaker 1: think will matter, will matter in some form or fashion
- 12:27Speaker 1: like large scale, granular or whatever. And you hit on
- 12:30Speaker 1: so many good points, like they're the Ravens front is
- 12:34Speaker 1: just so deep, and you like obviously highlighted by you know, Menabik,
- 12:38Speaker 1: who is an All pro and is phenomenal, and then
- 12:40Speaker 1: you have the scension of Travis Jones. But even down
- 12:42Speaker 1: you know, you mentioned a bunch, you know, everybody across
- 12:45Speaker 1: the front. I came away from that Bill's Ravens game
- 12:47Speaker 1: last year in the playoffs going, you know what, like
- 12:49Speaker 1: Tavy's Robinson is kind of sweet. And then I watched
- 12:51Speaker 1: them Tav's Robinson tape like in the offseason. And then
- 12:53Speaker 1: you mentioned like everything they've done like always, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 1: development over the years kind of in Tan with Greg
- 12:58Speaker 1: Russeau is a little bit more from a past perspective
- 13:00Speaker 1: what they have overall, really good front. And then the
- 13:02Speaker 1: first matchup was you alluded to that game script worked
- 13:06Speaker 1: perfect for them, and they were winning individually, especially when
- 13:09Speaker 1: it got the third down. You had Ravens rushers winning individually.
- 13:12Speaker 1: But then Or was getting creative with what they were.
- 13:16Speaker 1: They were bringing sims and creepers, they were dropping eight,
- 13:18Speaker 1: they were dropping metabike as like a low hole player.
- 13:21Speaker 1: They were dropping two defensive tackles at a time, Like
- 13:24Speaker 1: they were getting really creative and into their bag. And
- 13:27Speaker 1: it was because the game script favored them. The Bills
- 13:29Speaker 1: got away from their run game. They were in third
- 13:32Speaker 1: and longs and the Ravens rushers and pressure packages were
- 13:35Speaker 1: just teeing off and going left and right. They were
- 13:38Speaker 1: confusing and gaming up the Bills protections. They had free
- 13:41Speaker 1: runners come in, and then on top of that, what
- 13:44Speaker 1: I think is, oh, this is kind of it ties
- 13:47Speaker 1: in a bit to one of the ones that I
- 13:50Speaker 1: was gonna make, but I'd ended up making it in my
- 13:51Speaker 1: official three. The Ravens athleticism on the back end was
- 13:56Speaker 1: a real problem for the Bills wide receivers. You've got
- 13:59Speaker 1: this common nation at corner, especially when everyone's healthy, but
- 14:03Speaker 1: even last year Jyry Alexander obviously not there like he
- 14:05Speaker 1: is this year potentially, but you having like Wiggins and
- 14:09Speaker 1: Humphrey Stevens got picked on a bit, but you had
- 14:12Speaker 1: this athleticism at corner that gave the Ravens the ability
- 14:15Speaker 1: to like go single high stack the box to mitigate
- 14:19Speaker 1: the Bills run game, and then say like, we dare
- 14:21Speaker 1: you to find someone on the outside that can beat
- 14:23Speaker 1: our guys, and the Bills at that time didn't have
- 14:25Speaker 1: anyone that could do a Keon did it a little
- 14:27Speaker 1: bit in the second half of the game, but it
- 14:28Speaker 1: was on this you know, similar kind of those cowboy
- 14:30Speaker 1: routes back shoulder throws where he beat Stevens a little
- 14:32Speaker 1: here and there, I think, And you know, so this
- 14:35Speaker 1: ties into my first one. Game script matters so much
- 14:39Speaker 1: in this game because if the Bills get behind the
- 14:42Speaker 1: eight ball, the Bills get away from their run game,
- 14:45Speaker 1: which then favors into what the Ravens want to do
- 14:48Speaker 1: defensively and what they can do defensively. And then on
- 14:51Speaker 1: the opposite side, game script matter so much to the
- 14:55Speaker 1: Bills defense because game script was arguably, and I don't
- 14:59Speaker 1: say this, you know, hyperbolically, gamescript was arguably the Bill's
- 15:03Speaker 1: best way that they stopped the run last year. Their
- 15:06Speaker 1: recipe was create some turnovers or negative plays, which they
- 15:09Speaker 1: were very good at as a defense they have been
- 15:11Speaker 1: the last five years, then score some points on offense,
- 15:14Speaker 1: which again they were very good at last year, and
- 15:16Speaker 1: then their opponents would be forced to abandon the run.
- 15:19Speaker 1: If opponents weren't able to keep the game close and
- 15:22Speaker 1: stick with the run, they found success against the Bills defense,
- 15:25Speaker 1: and if that happened, the way the Bills had to
- 15:26Speaker 1: stop the run was gapping out and bringing that safety
- 15:29Speaker 1: down and constantly having numbers. And if you have to
- 15:32Speaker 1: stack the box. Just in general, if you the Bills,
- 15:34Speaker 1: then you're looking at one on ones on the outside,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and then your post safety single high is either going
- 15:38Speaker 1: to be Cole Bishop or Taylor Rapp, and neither of
- 15:40Speaker 1: those dudes are built to be an effective single high
- 15:43Speaker 1: safety right now at this stage from a coverage standpoint.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And then you also open yourself up to be more
- 15:48Speaker 1: predictable versus an offense like the Ravens that's lethal in
- 15:51Speaker 1: the air and on the ground schematically and physically. There's
- 15:55Speaker 1: just so many numbers in stats for this Bill's defenselast
- 16:00Speaker 1: year that pointed towards how important turnovers were for them,
- 16:04Speaker 1: how important negative plays were for them, and if they
- 16:07Speaker 1: didn't create those, it was relatively easy to sustain drives
- 16:12Speaker 1: move the ball against them, especially from a run aspect.
- 16:17Speaker 1: And so my first one again ties int a bit
- 16:19Speaker 1: of some of the points you mentioned with yours. Game
- 16:21Speaker 1: script I think is the biggest one, because you've got
- 16:23Speaker 1: two good teams and if they can stay close, obviously
- 16:26Speaker 1: they can battle, because they're two of the best teams
- 16:27Speaker 1: in the league, but they each have game scripts that
- 16:31Speaker 1: favor them so severely, where if you get behind the
- 16:34Speaker 1: eight ball a little bit versus either one of them,
- 16:37Speaker 1: it can like almost put you into earth, like in
- 16:40Speaker 1: this middle of the second quarter, if you get behind
- 16:42Speaker 1: that eight ball too much and that game script is
- 16:44Speaker 1: done quickly and that pendulum swings too far to the side.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It's almost like curtains against either of these teams based
- 16:50Speaker 1: on how they're built on each side of the ball,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and based on how they succeed and how you would
- 16:55Speaker 1: want to attack them and mitigate their strengths on each side.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Certainly, and so much of what the Bills did well
- 17:01Speaker 4: against the Ravens in the last game, they played well
- 17:05Speaker 4: the Ravens.
- 17:05Speaker 2: At least.
- 17:06Speaker 4: It was success on first and second down and moving
- 17:11Speaker 4: the line of scrimmage on first and second down, and
- 17:14Speaker 4: to your point, it just prevented any desperation. And the
- 17:18Speaker 4: Ravens ended up finding themselves in a lot of those
- 17:22Speaker 4: second in medium, third and long scenarios and they turn
- 17:27Speaker 4: the ball over. And it just really when you're playing
- 17:29Speaker 4: these really good quarterbacks, if you can be the one
- 17:34Speaker 4: to stay on script, and you can be the one
- 17:36Speaker 4: to stay ahead of downs, and you can be the
- 17:37Speaker 4: one to elevate around the quarterback and take some pressure
- 17:41Speaker 4: off and not put Josh Allen in a situation where
- 17:43Speaker 4: he's getting hit a lot. Not put Lamar Jackson in
- 17:45Speaker 4: a situation where he feels like he needs to carry
- 17:47Speaker 4: and maybe forces a throw or maybe gets loose with
- 17:49Speaker 4: the football. Then you are probably going to win. You're
- 17:52Speaker 4: probably gonna win the turnover battle. And when you play
- 17:54Speaker 4: these really good quarterbacks, you can't turn the ball over
- 17:57Speaker 4: against them. So I think those higher downs come as
- 18:00Speaker 4: a result of game script. If you can stay ahead
- 18:02Speaker 4: of schedule, then you're you're less likely to turn the
- 18:04Speaker 4: football over, You're more likely to stay calm, and the
- 18:07Speaker 4: calmer team always wins in these Burrow Alan Mahomes Jackson
- 18:13Speaker 4: AFC battles. It's it's the calmer team, the team that
- 18:16Speaker 4: stays ahead of schedule and you know, maybe makes one
- 18:18Speaker 4: or two spectacular plays to cap a game, or has
- 18:22Speaker 4: that one drive or that one defining moment.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So I love that point a ton.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, very fair. I mean I think it, you know,
- 18:28Speaker 1: kind of put a little bow on that. I think
- 18:29Speaker 1: it's interesting too, you know, and it ties into something
- 18:32Speaker 1: I mentioned in that point as well, like when you
- 18:33Speaker 1: get if you get behind the eight ball or but
- 18:36Speaker 1: behind the sticks I should say from a down in
- 18:37Speaker 1: distance perspective, the Ravens they can get creative schematically with
- 18:42Speaker 1: what they do from how are they going to attack you?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Or they they bring it a sim is it a creeper?
- 18:45Speaker 4: Is it?
- 18:46Speaker 1: You know? A fire zone pressure like what's come and
- 18:48Speaker 1: where I wanted more of that for the Bills. And
- 18:52Speaker 1: when the Bills get you into third and long. They
- 18:55Speaker 1: were arguably the worst defense in the NFL last year,
- 18:58Speaker 1: and they don't have a lot of skim creativity, and
- 19:01Speaker 1: there's more disconnect between the coverage and their pass rush.
- 19:05Speaker 1: And that's also a nice little like piece too. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: wonder like that aspect of you know, like you mentioned
- 19:10Speaker 1: winning on early downs and winning situationally, the Ravens have
- 19:14Speaker 1: shown a better propensity for taking advantage of that against
- 19:19Speaker 1: against offenses than the Bills defense did. And this year
- 19:22Speaker 1: I think it's so important. You know, they added Michael Hoyt.
- 19:24Speaker 1: He suspended for this game and we'll see what he
- 19:26Speaker 1: looks like coming back in Week six. But they've added
- 19:28Speaker 1: a lot of body types up front that I think
- 19:30Speaker 1: give them more schematic potential or creative potential, I should say,
- 19:33Speaker 1: And they brought in Ryan Nielsen who's very adept at
- 19:36Speaker 1: five man rushes and drawing those up and diagramming those.
- 19:40Speaker 1: So I wonder if the Bills do, if they can
- 19:42Speaker 1: win on early downs and force the Ravens in a
- 19:44Speaker 1: third and seven, third and eight. Is it still what
- 19:46Speaker 1: we've always seen from the Bills where it's like, hey,
- 19:48Speaker 1: we're nope, we're just rushing forward, we're playing coverage behind it.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Or do they start to throw more curve balls and
- 19:53Speaker 1: change ups and mix it up.
- 19:55Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Oh, there's so many things to talk about in this game.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I feel like you could do like a fifteen hour
- 20:00Speaker 1: pisode on it with all the fun things. All Right, Spence,
- 20:02Speaker 1: what do you got for your second matchup that you
- 20:04Speaker 1: think will decide Bill's first Ravens.
- 20:06Speaker 4: I've been on the show a few times. I don't
- 20:08Speaker 4: typically this isn't a hard one, but can I cuss?
- 20:13Speaker 1: Sure?
- 20:14Speaker 2: I want to call it Who's my bitch?
- 20:17Speaker 1: Okay?
- 20:18Speaker 4: And it's something we say on my show. Check out
- 20:21Speaker 4: Exit fifty two podcasts if you want, but.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Very good show you just wanted you want an award recently.
- 20:26Speaker 4: As well, we did Best of Baltimore, Baltimore Magazine's best
- 20:29Speaker 4: best local podcast there were.
- 20:30Speaker 2: We were very happy.
- 20:31Speaker 4: We've we've been doing our show a good bit and
- 20:33Speaker 4: uh like you guys were just sickos for the x's
- 20:35Speaker 4: and o's and that's not always the hottest topic in
- 20:40Speaker 4: today's you know, talking head world.
- 20:42Speaker 2: But we were really excited to win. So it was fun.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Yeah, But segment, it's not even a segment, just a
- 20:51Speaker 4: thought like, who's my bitch? I look at these two rosters.
- 20:54Speaker 4: There's not a lot of holes looking around. You know.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Safety play with Rap and Bishop on the back end
- 21:00Speaker 4: is consistent for the Bills. I kind of look there.
- 21:03Speaker 4: I mean, Benford is nothing to sneeze at. Trey White
- 21:07Speaker 4: the Ravens nos a physical player. He played well for
- 21:09Speaker 4: the Ravens last year, had that kind of controversial DPI.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I still don't think I said it during the game,
- 21:14Speaker 1: and I'm saying it now. I don't think it was
- 21:15Speaker 1: past interference on him against the Bills in the Division round.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But teach their own who think it.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Was exactly you know, it was just one of those instances.
- 21:22Speaker 4: It is what it is, and you got gotta play
- 21:24Speaker 4: football whatever whatever the results aren't figure it out. So
- 21:27Speaker 4: that certainly was an example that Trey White's not just
- 21:31Speaker 4: getting burnt and we see hard knocks and see all
- 21:33Speaker 4: those things.
- 21:34Speaker 2: He looked out standing, He looked fantastic.
- 21:36Speaker 4: He it looked like, you know, with their first round
- 21:39Speaker 4: pick not being able to have a full camp and
- 21:43Speaker 4: that injury, you know, he's he's got a shot to
- 21:45Speaker 4: kind of re kindle some fire that he felt early
- 21:50Speaker 4: on in his well.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Not even early on through the first portion of his career.
- 21:53Speaker 4: So I'm looking there like, really, I mean offensively for
- 21:56Speaker 4: the Bills, they're they're returning with they're returning, they have
- 21:58Speaker 4: a good run game. Closeha here, Kean Coleman, Josh Palmer.
- 22:01Speaker 4: You know Elijah Moore. I love, I've always loved. He's
- 22:04Speaker 4: been one of my little guys that I just can't
- 22:05Speaker 4: give up on. From the draft process, I loved him
- 22:07Speaker 4: so much. So I look at the offense, there's no
- 22:10Speaker 4: one there, and I look at the defense and it's like,
- 22:13Speaker 4: linebackers are good, the corners are solid, the front is good.
- 22:17Speaker 4: You had Joey Bosa to the mix. Ajpanessas and one
- 22:19Speaker 4: that I've always been in love with. I think I've
- 22:21Speaker 4: gushed about him on the show fifteen times. He's he's
- 22:23Speaker 4: one of my guys I'll never give up on. I
- 22:25Speaker 4: think what mcdermot's done with him is disgusting and made
- 22:28Speaker 4: him be a skinny boy when he's a fat boy.
- 22:30Speaker 4: We've talked about it, but it's really, you know, what
- 22:33Speaker 4: am I gonna do?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Pick on Trey White?
- 22:34Speaker 4: But it's the Bills know they're probably gonna try to
- 22:38Speaker 4: attack Trey White, And to me, the Ravens probably know
- 22:41Speaker 4: that the Bills are gonna attack Daniel fil Ale and
- 22:44Speaker 4: then I look around the rest of the roster and
- 22:47Speaker 4: who's my bitch.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I don't really see one.
- 22:48Speaker 2: And you can help those guys.
- 22:49Speaker 4: You can help your right guard, and you can help
- 22:51Speaker 4: one side corner with your smart safeties.
- 22:54Speaker 2: So I don't really see it.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Which to me lends to a balanced football game that
- 23:00Speaker 4: will require being spectacular. And I would say, I guess
- 23:05Speaker 4: other the Ravens defense, it's like, you know, I know,
- 23:08Speaker 4: I'm kind of shotgunning around some matchups, but it's like
- 23:11Speaker 4: the you mentioned all the athletes have on the back end,
- 23:14Speaker 4: you pick on probably the weak side linebacker if it's
- 23:17Speaker 4: Trent and Simpson, if it's one of the rookies, they
- 23:19Speaker 4: trot out. But again, that's kind of the only spot,
- 23:22Speaker 4: so you can kind of start debate that and help that,
- 23:24Speaker 4: and we'll see. I mean, Malachi starts as a rookie,
- 23:26Speaker 4: he's going to be starting. I'll attack him, But teams
- 23:30Speaker 4: tried to attack him at Georgia when he was an eighteen
- 23:32Speaker 4: year old true freshman. That didn't turn out well. And
- 23:34Speaker 4: now he's the true freshman in the NFL, and I
- 23:35Speaker 4: don't know, you know, we'll see what happens. He hasn't
- 23:38Speaker 4: played a snap yet of real football, so to speak,
- 23:41Speaker 4: in the NFL, so it's who's my bitch. They's just like,
- 23:45Speaker 4: not really any on either team, and I think that
- 23:48Speaker 4: makes it tough to.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I think it makes for good football.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Viewing because it means that they have to call plays
- 23:55Speaker 4: on both sides of the football. You need to scheme,
- 23:57Speaker 4: you need to be creative, you need to be deceptive,
- 24:00Speaker 4: you need to be on your p's and q's. And
- 24:03Speaker 4: I don't think there's any overpowering factor on either team.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I mean, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson gonna be the two
- 24:08Speaker 4: best players that play football on Sunday Night, but that's
- 24:13Speaker 4: no surprise. And there's two good defenses, two good offenses
- 24:16Speaker 4: around both of them. And I don't know who's my bitch?
- 24:18Speaker 4: There is none to be respectful.
- 24:21Speaker 1: To be respectful, I like that the additional who's by
- 24:23Speaker 1: bitch of them? But to be respectful, yeah, I like
- 24:25Speaker 1: to wait a bit out of the end. That's a
- 24:26Speaker 1: good point. The corner two matchup for the Bills, I
- 24:30Speaker 1: think is so interesting, especially with Trey going down in
- 24:33Speaker 1: camp or the preseason time, I should say, like, how
- 24:36Speaker 1: healthy is he? Does he start? What does he look
- 24:39Speaker 1: like when he starts? If it's not him, who is it?
- 24:43Speaker 1: Does do they get attacked in the air? I alluded
- 24:46Speaker 1: to it in kind of my first piece. If you're
- 24:48Speaker 1: have an issue stop in the Ravens run game, you
- 24:50Speaker 1: gotta go single high, which means whether it I don't
- 24:53Speaker 1: care if it's Cover one or Cover three, you're essentially
- 24:55Speaker 1: one on one on the outside. You've got Christian Benford
- 24:58Speaker 1: on one side, who is a tremendous corner. So whoever
- 25:01Speaker 1: CV two is is going to get attacked. So is
- 25:04Speaker 1: it a maybe not Trey White that has pros and cons?
- 25:09Speaker 1: Is it JaMarcus Ingram, is it Dane Jackson? Is it
- 25:14Speaker 1: Dorian Strong? I personally hope if Trey can't go, I
- 25:16Speaker 1: hope it's JaMarcus Ingram because of how he plays the run,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and I just know, Okay, I've got him on one
- 25:21Speaker 1: side and Benford on the other. Nothing's getting outside. You've
- 25:24Speaker 1: got good tacklers and good forced players at corner. I'm
- 25:27Speaker 1: happy with that. Granted, you know, Derrick Henry and Lamar
- 25:29Speaker 1: Jackson have shown other things and the rest of the
- 25:30Speaker 1: running backs who are all sweet. But yeah, that's a
- 25:33Speaker 1: fair point, Like who can there's not and even like
- 25:36Speaker 1: the deficiencies on each roster aren't like magnified holes. It's
- 25:40Speaker 1: not like, oh, well that spot.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Is stars, but there's like the thirty second best player
- 25:44Speaker 4: at their position there, or like you know, if there's
- 25:47Speaker 4: if it's the guards, it's like foul al for the Ravens,
- 25:49Speaker 4: like he might be the fortieth best guard in the NFL.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Like he's an average player.
- 25:53Speaker 4: He's fine. He's a warm body. Not as a negative comment,
- 25:56Speaker 4: but he's fine. Like they're fine. There's no glaring hole
- 26:00Speaker 4: on either opening day roster to me.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's depth. Yeah, that's what's so I think
- 26:08Speaker 1: like tough because it's not well, you gotta pick that guy,
- 26:11Speaker 1: it's more like, well, you think you'd want to attack
- 26:13Speaker 1: there because other areas are so strong because nobody has
- 26:15Speaker 1: all pros everywhere, But yeah, who can kind of attack
- 26:18Speaker 1: that spot more? But then to your point, you can
- 26:21Speaker 1: buttress that and band aid that a bit on either
- 26:24Speaker 1: side of the ball. But then at what cost? Oh
- 26:27Speaker 1: I like that one. I like that one a lot,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and that that ties into that makes me not sure
- 26:34Speaker 1: with what ants. No, I'm gonna I'm gonna stay order
- 26:35Speaker 1: of what I'm gonna go. I'm not gonna flip mine.
- 26:38Speaker 1: This one is very simple for me and straightforward alluded
- 26:41Speaker 1: to it a little. It's tied into my first point
- 26:43Speaker 1: a little bit. It really comes down to the run game.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I literally titled it the run game. Who wins it?
- 26:46Speaker 1: And how? That's it specifically? And I put out this
- 26:50Speaker 1: tweeter earlier today because I thought the numbers would back
- 26:52Speaker 1: it up, and they did. The Bills and Ravens gap
- 26:55Speaker 1: scheme run rankings from twenty twenty four. So this is duo,
- 26:59Speaker 1: this is power, this is counter, this is uh pin
- 27:02Speaker 1: and poll. This is everything with the Bills, tackle pull stuff,
- 27:06Speaker 1: dart and long trap, all that kind of stuff, all
- 27:08Speaker 1: the gap run stuff the Bills. I'll just go back
- 27:11Speaker 1: and forth between Bills Ravens. The Bills two hundred and
- 27:13Speaker 1: thirty seven attempts fourth, the Ravens two hundred and twenty
- 27:17Speaker 1: eight sixth. The Bills EPA per rush they were third,
- 27:21Speaker 1: the Ravens EPA per rush they were sixth. The Bills
- 27:24Speaker 1: success rate sixty four point one percent was twenty fifth,
- 27:28Speaker 1: the Ravens success rate two point six percentage points higher
- 27:31Speaker 1: at sixty six point seven eleventh yards before contact per
- 27:36Speaker 1: runch per rush. The Bills were tenth at one point five.
- 27:38Speaker 1: The Ravens were third at two point zero, so a
- 27:41Speaker 1: half yard more yards before contact and then after contact.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I didn't even pull that because the Ravens have Derrick
- 27:47Speaker 1: Henry and the Bills do not, So yards after contact
- 27:49Speaker 1: are almost a guaranteed thing if you're the Ravens. But
- 27:52Speaker 1: the Bills run game, I love it. It's diverse between
- 27:56Speaker 1: what you can get between their gap stuff. They have
- 27:58Speaker 1: multiple concepts within a gap scheme world they can get to.
- 28:01Speaker 1: They have multiple zone concepts as well, but they really
- 28:03Speaker 1: lean on between both worlds Duo, mid zone week and
- 28:07Speaker 1: then all the tackle pull stuff, dart and long trap,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and they're very good at making multiple concepts like duo,
- 28:15Speaker 1: or at least they were last year. They're very good
- 28:16Speaker 1: at making multiple concepts, specifically duo and mid zone week
- 28:20Speaker 1: present in the same fashion pre snap. I'm talking body types, personnel, grouping, alignment,
- 28:26Speaker 1: and you are staring down the barrel and you don't
- 28:28Speaker 1: know if they're going tight end side and running duo
- 28:31Speaker 1: or if they're going mid zone week, and then you
- 28:33Speaker 1: have to have your numbers balanced accordingly because if not,
- 28:36Speaker 1: they'll displace you or they can't displace you, regardless. James
- 28:39Speaker 1: Cook has become a very good gap runner in terms
- 28:42Speaker 1: of setting up his blocks and timing things out with
- 28:44Speaker 1: his track as opposed to just being the zone runner
- 28:46Speaker 1: that he was at Georgia. So their run game is
- 28:49Speaker 1: a problem, and it's tied to having a really good
- 28:51Speaker 1: offensive line and consistent group. And then the Ravens run
- 28:54Speaker 1: game not the broad brush of too much, but the
- 28:56Speaker 1: Ravens run game is a unicorn. You've got a physical
- 28:59Speaker 1: offensive line that's capable, you've got capable tight ends. You've
- 29:02Speaker 1: got Lamar Jackson, You've got Derek Henry, You've got multiple
- 29:05Speaker 1: backs behind Derrick Henry that are useful.
- 29:08Speaker 4: It.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Both teams have a strong identity in the run game
- 29:12Speaker 1: and the run game being tied to the foundations of
- 29:16Speaker 1: their offense and their quarterbacks, and you have to control
- 29:21Speaker 1: that if you're the opposing defense, like not to not
- 29:24Speaker 1: to say Alan can't throw or Lamar can't throw, because
- 29:27Speaker 1: they both are very good at that, but you can't
- 29:29Speaker 1: let them live in both worlds. You got to see
- 29:32Speaker 1: either stop the pass or stop the run. You can't
- 29:34Speaker 1: let Lamar be a dual threat. You can't let Alan
- 29:36Speaker 1: be a dual threat. But that's easier said than done.
- 29:37Speaker 1: And then you add the rest of the non QB
- 29:40Speaker 1: run pieces on top of it. I just feel like
- 29:42Speaker 1: everything starts here with the run game aspect and who
- 29:47Speaker 1: can stop it and not even stop it because you
- 29:49Speaker 1: don't think you can stop either. Actually, let me rephrase
- 29:51Speaker 1: who can mitigate the others run game more? And what
- 29:55Speaker 1: resources does it cost? Like for the Bills last year
- 29:59Speaker 1: again could stop the run by gapping out, and then
- 30:03Speaker 1: the Rams showed everybody, cool, if you gap out, we're
- 30:05Speaker 1: gonna murder you. In the past game, especially on the outside,
- 30:08Speaker 1: and the Ravens could do that a little bit too,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and the play action game is even deadlier. So I
- 30:12Speaker 1: really feel like a dad starts with the run, who
- 30:14Speaker 1: wins it, how who can mitigate the other and what
- 30:16Speaker 1: resources does it cost?
- 30:19Speaker 4: Definitely, I think Zay Flowers is a big loss for
- 30:21Speaker 4: the Ravens who was such a dynamic player in those
- 30:25Speaker 4: flat areas on those quick throws and then and.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Missed the playoff game too, which was a huge miss
- 30:29Speaker 1: as well.
- 30:30Speaker 4: Definitely, so I think that ties into your point very
- 30:34Speaker 4: much so relative to stopping the run on that side
- 30:38Speaker 4: of the football.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And again you talked about it ties to your point earlier.
- 30:41Speaker 2: How do you stay out.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Of bad situations?
- 30:44Speaker 2: You stay ahead of schedule? How do you stay ahead
- 30:46Speaker 2: of schedule?
- 30:46Speaker 4: You do well running the football in first second down,
- 30:48Speaker 4: and then you're not in third downs? And the Bills
- 30:51Speaker 4: just ran for four yards three yards. The Ravens weren't
- 30:53Speaker 4: able to force negative plays in the run game. The
- 30:56Speaker 4: Bills ran the ball well. The big back out of
- 30:59Speaker 4: Kentuck had a couple of rumbles. Ty Johnson, one of
- 31:02Speaker 4: my favorite players in the NFL, one of my favorite
- 31:04Speaker 4: role players of all time, had a couple nice plays
- 31:07Speaker 4: and always will in all aspects of football that he
- 31:11Speaker 4: has entered on, whether it's special team's past game, blocking
- 31:13Speaker 4: run game, but yeah, it's it's a tall task. And
- 31:18Speaker 4: we got Roy Collins here, Henry over one hundred and
- 31:20Speaker 4: twenty rushing yards.
- 31:21Speaker 2: I mean it's tough.
- 31:23Speaker 4: It's tough to stop James Cook with the threat of
- 31:25Speaker 4: Josh Allen, It's tough to stop Derek Henry with the
- 31:27Speaker 4: threat of Lamar Jackson.
- 31:28Speaker 2: And these offensive lines are returning a lot of starters.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Yeah, and the tight ends can block, and we'll see
- 31:35Speaker 4: about pat Riccarty isn't practiced in a while.
- 31:36Speaker 2: I think they might just be resting the big fellow.
- 31:38Speaker 2: The battery random up for a while.
- 31:40Speaker 1: But I love everything with Ricard for years, just such
- 31:43Speaker 1: a what do you do against like those personnel groupings
- 31:46Speaker 1: and that look like it's just such a it's a
- 31:47Speaker 1: unicorn their offense, just individually and schematically.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Certainly, I mean likely probably going to miss this game.
- 31:53Speaker 4: We'll see but another one.
- 31:55Speaker 2: So all of those are huge contributors.
- 31:59Speaker 4: To saying ahead of schedule, which was I thought such
- 32:01Speaker 4: a good point that you made earlier for my last one.
- 32:05Speaker 4: I'm probably gonna look at I'll put it to me,
- 32:11Speaker 4: two players will win this game, one for each side.
- 32:13Speaker 4: To me, I'm gonna look at Rashad Bateman and Keon Coleman,
- 32:15Speaker 4: and I love Khalil Shakir. I think Zay Flowers is
- 32:19Speaker 4: a jitterbug lightning bug, but I feel like those two
- 32:22Speaker 4: players that play on the ball that will get one
- 32:26Speaker 4: on one opportunities that have had success.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Kean Coleman made the plays against the Ravens last year.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Bateman made some plays, especially in Buffalo in that divisional
- 32:35Speaker 4: round matchup.
- 32:36Speaker 2: I think that.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Forcing a long pi being able to work into the
- 32:41Speaker 4: blind spot of you know, a single high coverage when
- 32:44Speaker 4: they're anticipating run on play action For Shod Bateman, you know,
- 32:47Speaker 4: I love Taylor Rap very much. I think he's a
- 32:51Speaker 4: stud of a safety. Hamlin's, you know, not a slouch mentally.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Cole Bishup did some really nice things last year. Expect
- 32:57Speaker 4: him to improve a ton this year and just be
- 32:58Speaker 4: more comfortable in year.
- 33:00Speaker 2: You're two your.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Two for cold Bishop, Yes, your two for cold Bishop. Yes,
- 33:04Speaker 4: your two for cold Bishop. So I expect those guys
- 33:07Speaker 4: to be smart. But Rashad Baman can run by those
- 33:08Speaker 4: guys if if they're they're even you know, there's those
- 33:11Speaker 4: None of those guys are maybe the rangiest dudes on earth.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Bishop a little more than the other two probably, But but.
- 33:17Speaker 1: He doesn't have the process and yet to like read
- 33:19Speaker 1: the game from that depth and play with anticipation and
- 33:21Speaker 1: break on the ball and be in the right position.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Rap does, but he doesn't have the athleticism in the range,
- 33:26Speaker 1: which is why they're single hot. Whoever plays in the post.
- 33:28Speaker 1: It's a bit.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Wonky, certainly, certainly, And and they're gonna run some some
- 33:33Speaker 4: middle of the field close coverage.
- 33:35Speaker 2: They they always do.
- 33:36Speaker 4: A little bit every team does, and Ken Rashad Baman
- 33:39Speaker 4: take advantage.
- 33:41Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 33:41Speaker 4: I mean, the Ravens might come into this game with
- 33:43Speaker 4: Nate Wiggins on that They usually they said Nate Wiggins
- 33:46Speaker 4: might follow for the first time. They they don't do that.
- 33:48Speaker 4: The Ravens don't have never they have been side corners.
- 33:51Speaker 4: They typically stick their starter. If they really like a corner,
- 33:54Speaker 4: they put you on left corner and you stay there
- 33:56Speaker 4: the entire season. You don't move ton unless there's you know,
- 33:59Speaker 4: some some four by one stuff. Maybe maybe a little
- 34:01Speaker 4: bit of like elongated trip. Certain looks might force the
- 34:04Speaker 4: hand of that. But at any given point, you can
- 34:06Speaker 4: find someone getting ninety seven percent of snaps on one
- 34:11Speaker 4: side of the field, so Nate Wiggins might follow a
- 34:13Speaker 4: little more this year. They could be deceptive with that,
- 34:15Speaker 4: but I do believe the Ravens want to put Marlin
- 34:18Speaker 4: Humphrey in the slot. I do believe that they are
- 34:21Speaker 4: going to trot out Chidobei A Woozy as their starting
- 34:23Speaker 4: corner on the other side of Wiggins. Wiggs is probably
- 34:25Speaker 4: gonna pay left corner. I think a Woozy will play
- 34:28Speaker 4: on the other side. A Woozy has been a successful
- 34:30Speaker 4: player in his career. He has earned some contracts, and
- 34:32Speaker 4: he's been very nice. He was never maybe the peak
- 34:35Speaker 4: of a tray White, but I kind of look at
- 34:37Speaker 4: them as guys that are vets. They've been banged up
- 34:38Speaker 4: and they still have some good, smart football in them.
- 34:41Speaker 4: So I'm sticking Kean Coleman over there. And he's had
- 34:44Speaker 4: an awesome camp by all means all the reports, I
- 34:47Speaker 4: thought he was an awesome player. He reminds me of
- 34:50Speaker 4: George Pickens in some ways, with probably a little less
- 34:53Speaker 4: screws loose, which which maybe doesn't.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Have him quite as explosive all the time.
- 34:58Speaker 4: In both you know, personality and on the field.
- 35:01Speaker 2: But I love Keon Coleman.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Loved him coming out of Farca, a very young player
- 35:05Speaker 4: that transferred and spent time at different schools, and it
- 35:09Speaker 4: was a big jump to the NFL. It felt like
- 35:11Speaker 4: for me from what the offenses were he was in.
- 35:13Speaker 4: So I understand all of the reports.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Coming out being so.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Great on him because I think he's gonna be great,
- 35:19Speaker 4: and I don't know. It's a toss up to me.
- 35:22Speaker 4: Like I love Klil Shakir to death. He is a
- 35:24Speaker 4: big play maker, he's big after the catch, he does
- 35:26Speaker 4: all the little things right.
- 35:27Speaker 2: But is anyone surprised if Keon Coleman has you know.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Seventh a deep ball category, productive season, sixty catches, you know,
- 35:34Speaker 4: eleven hundred yards and eight touchdowns, something like that, kind.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Of like a big man.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Jamison Williams kind of stat line from last year. No,
- 35:41Speaker 4: absolutely not so. Rashad Bateman I think has the matchup.
- 35:47Speaker 4: I think Keon Coleman I'm gonna look to and see
- 35:49Speaker 4: if I can get him rolling. If you can get
- 35:51Speaker 4: Keon Coleman rolling, and you can get maybe Chaudobi a woozy,
- 35:54Speaker 4: if that's the matchup the Ravens want to put there
- 35:56Speaker 4: on their toes. I think that you talk about dedicating
- 35:58Speaker 4: resources in the run game. Well, then maybe the Ravens
- 36:01Speaker 4: are dedicating resources in the past game. Maybe they are
- 36:04Speaker 4: staying in a little more bit more of Bischelle and
- 36:05Speaker 4: trying to disguise and letting the Bills run the ball
- 36:08Speaker 4: a bit and hoping to down score them. So I
- 36:10Speaker 4: think those two players, those perimeter wide receivers have a
- 36:14Speaker 4: ton of opportunity to make plays, and we've seen them
- 36:17Speaker 4: do it a little bit in this very matchup last year.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Oh I love that point. This was like a close
- 36:22Speaker 1: forth for me, like this entire conversation, and you know,
- 36:26Speaker 1: starting with it, I am Rashad. I know there's there's
- 36:28Speaker 1: a good amount of people out there. I'm still a
- 36:29Speaker 1: Rashad Baitman truther. I believe him and believed in him
- 36:32Speaker 1: at Minnesota. He just could never stay healthy so far.
- 36:35Speaker 1: And you know, it's funny, you and I were talking
- 36:36Speaker 1: offline about the first episode that we did here together
- 36:40Speaker 1: was when the Bills played in Baltimore in the regular
- 36:42Speaker 1: season in the rain several years ago, and the Bills
- 36:44Speaker 1: had to come back and won. I always remember Rashad
- 36:47Speaker 1: Bateman twisting his ankle and getting hurt in that game
- 36:49Speaker 1: as being a significant part of that comeback happening. Like
- 36:52Speaker 1: he was finding space, he was working well. He twists
- 36:54Speaker 1: his ankle in the rain. I think he left the
- 36:56Speaker 1: game on crutches.
- 36:57Speaker 2: I had a great start to the season.
- 36:59Speaker 4: He was looking like a bona fide threat that would have,
- 37:03Speaker 4: you know, an eighty million dollar contract right now.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a week before that or close to it.
- 37:09Speaker 1: He had that like the slant against Miami for like
- 37:11Speaker 1: a seventy something yard house call. Like he looked very
- 37:14Speaker 1: much like the truth. Hurts his ankle in that game,
- 37:16Speaker 1: banged up. I think missed a good chunk of that
- 37:18Speaker 1: year with that ankle injury. And the outside matchups. Premiere
- 37:22Speaker 1: are so important because of the run games and then
- 37:27Speaker 1: the single high nature associated with that. So of offenses
- 37:30Speaker 1: that faced single high coverage last year and usually if
- 37:33Speaker 1: you're seeing granted, you know backtrack a minute. Cover three
- 37:36Speaker 1: is still the most widely used coverage in the NFL.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Although we are in this too high shell revolution or
- 37:41Speaker 1: however people want to put it, but no team is
- 37:43Speaker 1: predominantly too high, no team is predominantly man majority of
- 37:46Speaker 1: teams their majority, their highest use coverage is still Cover three,
- 37:49Speaker 1: and they sprinkle in the others at different rates and usages.
- 37:52Speaker 1: But that being said, no offense faced more single high
- 37:56Speaker 1: coverage or single high snaps last year than the Buffalo Bills.
- 37:59Speaker 1: They saw single high rates at sixty one point eight
- 38:03Speaker 1: percent last year, and the Baltimore Ravens were fifth at
- 38:07Speaker 1: fifty eight percent. And part of that is tied to
- 38:11Speaker 1: their run games, which you're like, uh, oh, we got
- 38:13Speaker 1: to account for the run game, so we got to
- 38:15Speaker 1: bring a safety down, we got to have seven and
- 38:17Speaker 1: eight in the box, we got to combat the run.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And when that happens, you've got matchups on the outside.
- 38:21Speaker 1: And we talked about it a bit from the Bills
- 38:24Speaker 1: defense perspective, but the other side, like you mentioned, is
- 38:27Speaker 1: one that I'm really interested in. Can can Keon Coleman?
- 38:31Speaker 1: Sorry if you're here aloud. I don't know why I
- 38:32Speaker 1: keep getting motorcycles. I keep riding by so late all
- 38:35Speaker 1: the time. Now it's happening with like three weeks in
- 38:36Speaker 1: a row. Can Keon Coleman be that guy who wins
- 38:39Speaker 1: on the outside, Like, who wins on the outside for
- 38:44Speaker 1: the Bills and who is it against? That's such a question,
- 38:48Speaker 1: not just for this game, but I really think throughout
- 38:51Speaker 1: the year. Like you mentioned Shakir, We know what Shakira
- 38:54Speaker 1: is in a good way, right, you know where he's
- 38:55Speaker 1: gonna win, how he's gonna win. But the outside is
- 39:00Speaker 1: it Josh Palmer, is it Keon Coleman? Is it Tyrrel
- 39:04Speaker 1: Shavers who everybody loves coming out of the preseason and
- 39:06Speaker 1: can't Maybe it's Elijah more like is it a quasi
- 39:10Speaker 1: X role for Dalton Kincaid? Like all of these questions
- 39:13Speaker 1: have are plausible and actually happening, but I think it
- 39:17Speaker 1: all ties to the overall question, which is like what
- 39:20Speaker 1: do the Bills get on the outside? And that's part
- 39:23Speaker 1: of what got them in trouble last year. In those
- 39:25Speaker 1: back to back games against Baltimore and Houston, both teams
- 39:29Speaker 1: who have good corners and athletic corners and athleticism on
- 39:32Speaker 1: the back end, they both in back to back weeks
- 39:34Speaker 1: were like, guess what, We're going to play a ton
- 39:36Speaker 1: of single high because we don't think you can beat
- 39:38Speaker 1: us outside or deep, and the Bills couldn't. Part of
- 39:41Speaker 1: the reason they went out to get a Martin Cooper
- 39:43Speaker 1: and then he ended up getting banged up and so
- 39:44Speaker 1: on and so forth. But that outside matchup I think
- 39:47Speaker 1: is so interesting because despite the fact that the run
- 39:50Speaker 1: game is so good for both teams, if you can
- 39:53Speaker 1: just stack the box and play numbers, you can mitigate
- 39:56Speaker 1: Baltimore's and Buffalo's run game. And the way to get
- 39:59Speaker 1: over that is to beat them on the outside, threaten
- 40:02Speaker 1: them a little bit, cause some issues cause some problems.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I really like, really like that piece, especially from the
- 40:07Speaker 1: Bills perspective, Like I think the Ravens there's more answers
- 40:10Speaker 1: and it's more just like, oh, can they stay healthy?
- 40:12Speaker 1: The Bills, especially for Bills fans. Keyank Coleman's a big
- 40:15Speaker 1: question mark. You'll get some people who think he's going
- 40:17Speaker 1: to be the truth, some people who think he's the
- 40:19Speaker 1: worst pick ever and the Bills should have taken Worthy
- 40:22Speaker 1: and they messed up by doing that, YadA YadA. I
- 40:24Speaker 1: really like that point. I really liked that point a lot.
- 40:26Speaker 1: My final point, this is real cut and dry, really simple,
- 40:30Speaker 1: not allowed to speak on. I feel like kind of
- 40:33Speaker 1: a sellof for going with it. But it's the Baltimore
- 40:36Speaker 1: Ravens versus themselves. I think it's somewhat self explanatory. But
- 40:41Speaker 1: the Bills for the past several years, last five years
- 40:45Speaker 1: have been the best team in creating turnovers the year
- 40:47Speaker 1: over year. Their consistency in an area that you see
- 40:51Speaker 1: a lot of ebbs and flows. It is not a
- 40:53Speaker 1: consistent thing for teams to constantly create or consistently create turnovers.
- 40:57Speaker 1: It usually regresses to the mean at some point, and
- 41:00Speaker 1: it has not for the Bills. I keep as a
- 41:02Speaker 1: paranoid person, I keep waiting for that to kind of turn.
- 41:04Speaker 1: But the worm has not turned at this point. But
- 41:06Speaker 1: the Bills create turnovers and negative plays. They do that
- 41:09Speaker 1: with regularity. That's how they lived last year as a
- 41:11Speaker 1: defense for better or for worse. And then you have
- 41:13Speaker 1: the Ravens will get in the playoff game against the
- 41:16Speaker 1: Bills is a good example. No punts in that game.
- 41:19Speaker 1: They were either putting up points or they turn the
- 41:21Speaker 1: ball over, or they had some drops, or they had
- 41:23Speaker 1: like a fumble. And it's just that I find that
- 41:27Speaker 1: happening more in the playoffs for the Ravens. But those
- 41:29Speaker 1: big games at the end of the year for them,
- 41:30Speaker 1: or even kind of like Galaxy braining out thinking themselves
- 41:33Speaker 1: a little bit against Kansas City and AFC Championship game
- 41:36Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, and now running the ball
- 41:37Speaker 1: enough like that ability in a negative way to either
- 41:41Speaker 1: make mistakes or outthink themselves versus the Bills' ability to
- 41:46Speaker 1: create havoc and high variance plays for themselves. And which
- 41:50Speaker 1: one kind of outweighs the other. Is it neither and
- 41:53Speaker 1: we get consistency from eachside. Do the Ravens take care
- 41:56Speaker 1: of the football? Do they not outthink themselves? Do they
- 41:59Speaker 1: just keep it simple and run it down the Bill's
- 42:00Speaker 1: throat and work in play action and play to being
- 42:03Speaker 1: better on paper? Or do they out think themselves a
- 42:06Speaker 1: little bit? Do they make mistakes? Do they play into
- 42:09Speaker 1: the Bill's hand of playing fast and aggressive and trying
- 42:11Speaker 1: to take the ball away and making plays on the ball,
- 42:14Speaker 1: And just how all that coalesces into one I often,
- 42:18Speaker 1: just again, I feel like in big games there's times
- 42:20Speaker 1: where it seems like the Ravens beat themselves, and I
- 42:23Speaker 1: wonder if we see some of that in Although it's
- 42:26Speaker 1: week one and there's so much more to the season.
- 42:28Speaker 1: I think both people will people, both teams want this game,
- 42:31Speaker 1: especially the Ravens, and I wonder if it means a
- 42:34Speaker 1: little more. And in those games that mean a little more,
- 42:36Speaker 1: they tend to kind of press a little bit and
- 42:38Speaker 1: shoot themselves in the foot. So, yeah, the Ravens kind
- 42:41Speaker 1: of verses themselves and how that plays into who the
- 42:43Speaker 1: Bills are I think is a very big one.
- 42:47Speaker 4: I agree, and overall, I mean it's something that the
- 42:51Speaker 4: Ravens have. It really just overall turn the football over
- 42:54Speaker 4: too much in the playoffs and not forced enough turnovers.
- 42:57Speaker 4: And last year, even in the regular season, the rae
- 43:00Speaker 4: only four seventeen turnovers, which is not to the standard
- 43:03Speaker 4: of the franchise.
- 43:04Speaker 1: That's not did not realize that that's crazy Lough, especially
- 43:06Speaker 1: for like, yeah, like a franchise, like the reasons and
- 43:08Speaker 1: how they played.
- 43:08Speaker 4: They finished with a plus six differential in turnovers somehow
- 43:13Speaker 4: while only forcing seventeen turnovers. But they also were among
- 43:19Speaker 4: the worst in the NFL in terms of penalty yardage,
- 43:21Speaker 4: So that ties exactly into your point. I think there's
- 43:23Speaker 4: a lot of reasons why the Ravens were sloppy last
- 43:26Speaker 4: year and into the playoffs. They had a lot of
- 43:29Speaker 4: brain drain on their defensive staff. Their offensive line coach
- 43:32Speaker 4: prior to the season unfortunately passed away. They had new
- 43:34Speaker 4: starters on the offensive line and then had to find
- 43:37Speaker 4: a new offensive line coach during training camp, so a
- 43:40Speaker 4: lot of things that led to some sloppiness overall, and
- 43:43Speaker 4: because of that, I think that it manifested into the
- 43:46Speaker 4: playoffs very much.
- 43:47Speaker 2: So they got to play the Steelers in the wild Card,
- 43:50Speaker 2: who they knew.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Really well and knew how to avoid those hot button items.
- 43:56Speaker 4: The Steelers like the press with their rush and the
- 43:58Speaker 4: way they do things, but then they faced a Bills
- 44:00Speaker 4: team that was disciplined and started to press and turn
- 44:03Speaker 4: the football over. So absolutely, I think that's a huge
- 44:06Speaker 4: part of it, and whoever wins the turnover battle will
- 44:09Speaker 4: win this game, I think.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Frankly, I'm very excited. I know you're very excited. I
- 44:15Speaker 1: appreciate you taking the time to join me. For those
- 44:17Speaker 1: watching live, we're going to continue on on this show.
- 44:19Speaker 1: But Spence was very gracious and joining me tonight. But
- 44:24Speaker 1: he's got his show that he has to go do,
- 44:26Speaker 1: and I want to make sure he gets out on time. Spence,
- 44:27Speaker 1: just in case people don't know who we are, what
- 44:29Speaker 1: you do. You have the floor, tell everybody where they
- 44:32Speaker 1: can find you all your work, because you are tremendous,
- 44:34Speaker 1: not just from a raven's perspective, but from a football
- 44:36Speaker 1: knowing ball knowing perspective, So the floor is yours. Tell
- 44:38Speaker 1: the people who you are and what you do. I
- 44:40Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Make sure you're giving all the love to the cover
- 44:43Speaker 4: one boys and in here who do an amazing job.
- 44:45Speaker 4: You guys have just always been fun and my kind
- 44:47Speaker 4: of people. So appreciate you guys always.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Having me on.
- 44:50Speaker 4: You can find me at Twitter, Ravens four Dummies. You
- 44:53Speaker 4: can find the Exit fifty two podcast Ravens Orioles, University
- 44:58Speaker 4: of Maryland. We do a lot of common tear on
- 45:00Speaker 4: officiating and on announcing during games, color commentary. We love
- 45:05Speaker 4: to talk about those things too, so you can always
- 45:07Speaker 4: like subscribe follow for all of those fun things. A
- 45:10Speaker 4: lot of film during the season, a lot of nonsense
- 45:13Speaker 4: during the offseason, but during football season we get down
- 45:16Speaker 4: to brass tacks. So certainly certainly can find in any
- 45:19Speaker 4: of those places.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I appreciate you.
- 45:20Speaker 4: Having me on, and hey, have a great season. Hopefully
- 45:23Speaker 4: the Bills and Ravens find themselves in the AFC Championship
- 45:25Speaker 4: and someone of them, the Chiefs can represent the AFC
- 45:28Speaker 4: in the Super Bowl, and that would be cool.
- 45:29Speaker 1: So that would be phenomenal. Yeah, and go do your
- 45:33Speaker 1: go take you play your role in your award winning podcast.
- 45:35Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Enjoy your night, and maybe we'll see
- 45:38Speaker 1: each other here again at some point down the road.
- 45:40Speaker 1: If these teams continue to dance in the playoffs like
- 45:41Speaker 1: they have.
- 45:42Speaker 2: I think that will be the case. Thanks Anne, have
- 45:44Speaker 2: a great night.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Joy football everyone, Yeah, good joy football later. Mister Spencer Schultz,
- 45:51Speaker 1: very good guest front of the show making Yeah. I
- 45:54Speaker 1: was trying to count it with him before we went live.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I think it's his fourth time, maybe fifth, I don't remember.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Bill's a Ravens have played so much I wanted to
- 46:02Speaker 1: go back super chat from Jessica, thank you very much
- 46:05Speaker 1: for being here. Thank you for the super chat. I
- 46:06Speaker 1: didn't want to bite into Spence's time because I know
- 46:10Speaker 1: he was on a hard stop. So I essentially, you know,
- 46:14Speaker 1: broke my own rule if super chats get priority and
- 46:16Speaker 1: pulled up, So I apologize for that. Jessica, forgive me,
- 46:19Speaker 1: but thank you for being here. Thank you for the
- 46:20Speaker 1: super chat, and want to get back to this comment.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Jessica says, the bills of that all summer to put
- 46:25Speaker 1: in a base four to three to help handle the
- 46:28Speaker 1: size and the running game of the Ravens thoughts with
- 46:31Speaker 1: Milano and Bernard to cover the tight ends. I'm okay
- 46:35Speaker 1: with Mlano and Bernard covering the tight ends, especially Bernard Milano.
- 46:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna say this with massive fingers crossed in a
- 46:43Speaker 1: massive note chinx, because you folks an'll know I'm very superstitious.
- 46:45Speaker 1: But Matt Mlano this preseason and in camp has very
- 46:49Speaker 1: much looked like the Matt Mlano of old.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Like.
- 46:52Speaker 1: He looks fast, the trigger is there, the gap shooting,
- 46:55Speaker 1: the recognition, he doesn't have a brace on his knee,
- 46:58Speaker 1: he doesn't have a brace on his arm like. He
- 47:00Speaker 1: just looks fast and physical and impactful with everything that
- 47:05Speaker 1: he does. And if the Bills get that Milano next
- 47:08Speaker 1: to what Terrell Bernard has been, even though Terrel Bernard
- 47:11Speaker 1: could still get better, I like what they can do
- 47:14Speaker 1: against the run and in coverage, especially with Isaiah likely
- 47:18Speaker 1: probably being out. You're looking at Andrews, who I still
- 47:21Speaker 1: think is sweet, and Charlie Colard is no slouch there
- 47:23Speaker 1: number three tight end, but I think the Bills can
- 47:27Speaker 1: hang there. My biggest question with that if they do
- 47:29Speaker 1: have to go with three linebackers on the field and
- 47:31Speaker 1: do play you know, a base for three or traditional
- 47:33Speaker 1: four three Dorian Williams. What does he look like in coverage?
- 47:37Speaker 1: Is it more of an on the line of scrimmage
- 47:39Speaker 1: sam linebacker type of role or does he get put
- 47:42Speaker 1: into run pass conflict? Does he have to process? Does
- 47:45Speaker 1: he have to read? Do they take advantage of him
- 47:47Speaker 1: in any way, shape or form. He's made really nice
- 47:50Speaker 1: strides overall as a player in coverage and against the run,
- 47:54Speaker 1: but his coverage work is still a work in progress.
- 47:58Speaker 1: He still will get lost from time to time. The
- 48:01Speaker 1: instincts and the feel for route distributions and concepts still
- 48:04Speaker 1: necessarily aren't there for Dorrian Williams. We're playing the run,
- 48:07Speaker 1: I am legitimately very confident in him his ability to
- 48:11Speaker 1: defeat blocks, play to his length, play to his size,
- 48:13Speaker 1: play to his speed and burst in quickness, and then
- 48:16Speaker 1: being able to read and process the run game. He's
- 48:19Speaker 1: become very good at, you know, seeing guys get washed
- 48:22Speaker 1: in front of him and naturally kind of exchanging gaps
- 48:24Speaker 1: and fitting where they were supposed to be because they've
- 48:26Speaker 1: overtaken where he is, you know, on purpose or accidentally
- 48:29Speaker 1: because of where they've gotten blocked to. I'm confident in
- 48:33Speaker 1: Dorian playing more and against the run. But the coverage
- 48:36Speaker 1: aspect is what I worry about a little bit. But
- 48:38Speaker 1: as far as just Milano and Bernard, I'm confident and
- 48:41Speaker 1: both of them really good question. I like that very much.
- 48:44Speaker 1: I wanted to go grab some other I have some
- 48:46Speaker 1: other points and some stats that I wanted to get into,
- 48:48Speaker 1: but I wanted to get some questions here. Bill's fans,
- 48:57Speaker 1: some many eight eighty three says everyone talks about interchangeable safeties,
- 49:00Speaker 1: but no one actually does it. They just say that's
- 49:01Speaker 1: the way the NFL is going, but it's actually not.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I'm curious to get your your thoughts on this. I
- 49:06Speaker 1: think it's more of cause I do think this is
- 49:09Speaker 1: largely true across the league. You don't necessarily have the
- 49:12Speaker 1: free and the strong safety dynamic like you used to
- 49:14Speaker 1: have with the With the Seahawks, for example, you know,
- 49:17Speaker 1: you knew where er Thomas was going to be and
- 49:19Speaker 1: where Cam Chanceller was going to be, and then even
- 49:22Speaker 1: like the Bills, you had kind of a Jerispird type
- 49:24Speaker 1: of safety and a Dante Whitner type of safety. I
- 49:26Speaker 1: do think a lot of the league has morphed into
- 49:29Speaker 1: what the Bills did for a while with Hide and Poyer,
- 49:31Speaker 1: where yeah, Hyde's skill set lean more towards a center
- 49:35Speaker 1: fielder and a coverage standpoint on the back end, Employer's
- 49:39Speaker 1: skill set lean more towards him being in the box
- 49:41Speaker 1: and playing in and around the line of scrimmage. But
- 49:43Speaker 1: both could operate see pretty seamlessly in terms of where
- 49:47Speaker 1: you use them. Poyer could drop into the post as
- 49:50Speaker 1: a single high safety and be fine. Hide could come
- 49:53Speaker 1: down into the box and be fine. They could play
- 49:56Speaker 1: as an apex and be fine. They could play as
- 49:58Speaker 1: split field safety's in cover two or quarters and be fine.
- 50:03Speaker 1: I do think a lot of the league has kind
- 50:04Speaker 1: of moved into that direction, And yeah, you may have.
- 50:07Speaker 1: For the Ravens, for example, you've got Malachi Starks and
- 50:11Speaker 1: you've got Kyle Hamilton, it probably makes more sense to
- 50:13Speaker 1: play Malchi starts deep if you're going single high and
- 50:16Speaker 1: let him rock as that post safety and play Kyle
- 50:18Speaker 1: Hamilton as an apex or a big nickel or have
- 50:21Speaker 1: him be in and around the box. But Kyle Hamilton
- 50:23Speaker 1: can still do that deep role, and Malchi Starks can
- 50:26Speaker 1: still do that up in the box type of role
- 50:28Speaker 1: and that slot coverage apex type of role. So I
- 50:31Speaker 1: do think while teams may lean into certain roles for
- 50:35Speaker 1: certain guys because there usually is, you know, some level
- 50:38Speaker 1: of you know, the sliders are turned up in one direction,
- 50:40Speaker 1: I do think a lot of the league has moved
- 50:42Speaker 1: towards just a safety position, where it is more just
- 50:45Speaker 1: safety rather than free and strong, even though there are
- 50:48Speaker 1: some of those elements that are present. Roy, Yeah, this
- 50:52Speaker 1: is what I was alluding to a little bit, but
- 50:54Speaker 1: fair coming here from Roy was a single high safety
- 50:55Speaker 1: against the Bills last season, in my opinion, was because
- 50:58Speaker 1: no one respected our wide receivers. And I love Spence's
- 51:01Speaker 1: point and I kind of brought it with mine as well.
- 51:03Speaker 1: You're gonna see You're gonna see a lot of that
- 51:05Speaker 1: against the Bills in general, because teams are not going
- 51:09Speaker 1: to want to die by the run game. They're gonna
- 51:12Speaker 1: want to try and stop and gum up the Bills
- 51:14Speaker 1: run game. It as crazy as that may sound. They're
- 51:16Speaker 1: going to try and force the Bills to have to
- 51:18Speaker 1: pass the hell out of the ball. Teams are gonna
- 51:20Speaker 1: want the Bills to throw the ball thirty five forty
- 51:23Speaker 1: times a game. They do not want the Bills leaning
- 51:25Speaker 1: on the run game. They're going to continue to get
- 51:27Speaker 1: a lot of single high whether or not the past
- 51:30Speaker 1: game is good and guys can win or separate on
- 51:33Speaker 1: the outside or deep. But it's gonna get even worse
- 51:36Speaker 1: and be harder if they can't win on the outside
- 51:39Speaker 1: and or separate on the outside or win deep. All
- 51:41Speaker 1: of that it's going to compound. Teams are going to
- 51:43Speaker 1: get more comfortable walking in safety down or playing man
- 51:46Speaker 1: and just straight up forget it. We're not even playing zone.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Let's make it easy. Let's man this thing across the board.
- 51:51Speaker 1: We'll have a low hole player or a robber, maybe
- 51:53Speaker 1: spy on a little bit in case they Bills go
- 51:55Speaker 1: play action or boot or get them on the move
- 51:57Speaker 1: and move the pocket a little bit. Yeah, it can.
- 52:00Speaker 1: There is a world where the Bills run game gets
- 52:03Speaker 1: stymied and gummed up because the receivers aren't up the
- 52:06Speaker 1: snuff on the outside. We saw it last year again,
- 52:09Speaker 1: maybe smaller samples, but we saw it against Baltimore, we
- 52:12Speaker 1: saw it against Houston. At some point, the Bills wide
- 52:15Speaker 1: receivers are gonna have to prove their worth and their
- 52:17Speaker 1: metal against good corners and or athletic corners, and it's
- 52:22Speaker 1: gonna tie into the coverages that defenses play, which is
- 52:25Speaker 1: going to tie into the run fits. Yeah, they're gonna need,
- 52:28Speaker 1: which is again why I think Josh Palmer will help
- 52:30Speaker 1: a lot, even if he's not the world beater that
- 52:32Speaker 1: I think several folks have made him out to be.
- 52:34Speaker 1: He can separate in the low and in the underneath,
- 52:37Speaker 1: in the low intermediate, and that should be fine enough.
- 52:39Speaker 1: You just need somebody that can beat guys enough consistently
- 52:42Speaker 1: one on one. I think Palmer can be that guy,
- 52:45Speaker 1: and I think Coleman can be that a little bit
- 52:46Speaker 1: as well, albeit for more of a ball winning, power forward,
- 52:49Speaker 1: dunk on you type of game, but that still can work.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Like the Ravens are a good example. Potentially, Nate Wiggins
- 52:56Speaker 1: really fast, really athletic corner, second year man out of Clemson,
- 53:00Speaker 1: plays physical and plays bigger than his size indicates, but
- 53:04Speaker 1: he is more of a leaner, I don't want to
- 53:07Speaker 1: say frail at all, but more of a leaner, skinnier
- 53:09Speaker 1: type of corner. If you're looking for him to kind
- 53:13Speaker 1: of like try and get rebounds with key On Coleman,
- 53:16Speaker 1: you would like to think that key On Coleman has
- 53:18Speaker 1: that advantage. I'll just throw jump balls and let him
- 53:20Speaker 1: box him out and use his size and frame to
- 53:22Speaker 1: dunk on Wiggins over and over again. So they have
- 53:25Speaker 1: the opportunity to kind of create some things this year potentially,
- 53:28Speaker 1: but yes, a lot of single high last year because
- 53:31Speaker 1: two things. Teams were crowding the box to stop the
- 53:34Speaker 1: Bills run game, and coincidentally or not, they didn't fear
- 53:39Speaker 1: anybody on the outside, kind of giving them some threats.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Face embarrassays Palmer is going to shine with Josh. I hope,
- 53:44Speaker 1: So I hope, So I hope, So I hope. So
- 53:47Speaker 1: mac Max says he his keys to the game. I
- 53:49Speaker 1: like this, Like do you listen to you know? Mac
- 53:51Speaker 1: Max says keys to the game one who continues to
- 53:53Speaker 1: play with the lead and therefore gets the stick to
- 53:55Speaker 1: the script. Two who controls the line of scrimmage. Three
- 53:58Speaker 1: who wins the turnover battle. That's very fair, that's very fair.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Just the tip new says the like button. People. Yes,
- 54:03Speaker 1: please please think if you have not already dropped a
- 54:05Speaker 1: light on this video like or the lifeblood of these streams.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Please please please and thank you. Pete Pete. Pete says,
- 54:13Speaker 1: I hope this game doesn't mean more to the Ravens
- 54:15Speaker 1: than to Buffalo. Are we talking about a narrative outside
- 54:18Speaker 1: of the team when we say that, not the locker room, right, No,
- 54:21Speaker 1: I mean more of Yeah. I actually know maybe even
- 54:25Speaker 1: from a team perspective, I think that it's not necessarily
- 54:28Speaker 1: even like the biggest thing or the worst thing, like
- 54:30Speaker 1: when your season ends at the hands of a certain
- 54:32Speaker 1: team or a rival. I do think it makes more
- 54:36Speaker 1: sense that that losing team kind of gets a little
- 54:39Speaker 1: more geeked up for that opening game and it means
- 54:42Speaker 1: a little more to them to win that. Now, I
- 54:44Speaker 1: don't think that means the Bills don't care, right, But
- 54:48Speaker 1: I'm just saying I think it's possible that the Bills
- 54:50Speaker 1: come into this game and this game is a nine
- 54:52Speaker 1: out of ten for them or a nine point five
- 54:54Speaker 1: out of ten, but for the Ravens it's a ten
- 54:56Speaker 1: out of ten or a nine point eight or something
- 54:58Speaker 1: like that. So I'm not saying that the Bills are
- 55:01Speaker 1: gonna come in flat and underperform and they don't care
- 55:04Speaker 1: about this game. But I think there is a plausible
- 55:07Speaker 1: chance that this game means more to the Ravens because
- 55:09Speaker 1: their season ended at the hands of the Bills. I
- 55:12Speaker 1: think it's just natural to a little bit like, yeah,
- 55:14Speaker 1: we beat these guys already, we want to win. We
- 55:16Speaker 1: know this game is important. It's opening night where the
- 55:19Speaker 1: home team, it's primetime. The Bills are going to be
- 55:22Speaker 1: juiced up for this game. But I do think it's
- 55:24Speaker 1: plausible that the Ravens are maybe a little more juiced up.
- 55:27Speaker 1: I'm not buying necessarily the whole narrative of the Ravens
- 55:31Speaker 1: have had this game penciled, They've been thinking about it
- 55:33Speaker 1: all off season. This is what they want more than anything.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I don't think it's necessarily to that degree, but I
- 55:38Speaker 1: do think it's plausible where there's a world where this
- 55:40Speaker 1: game means slightly a bit more on the needle for
- 55:43Speaker 1: the Ravens that it does potentially for the Bills. John
- 55:51Speaker 1: Roberts says, do you think someone gets called up from
- 55:53Speaker 1: the practice squad because of Dwayne Carter's injury? And who? Yes,
- 55:59Speaker 1: I feel like it's just gonna be I'm gonna go
- 56:02Speaker 1: to the Bills. I actually know what. I don't want
- 56:06Speaker 1: to kind of cop out right now, but I don't
- 56:10Speaker 1: know what the full injury report will be. Injury report
- 56:13Speaker 1: will be tomorrow is Wednesday, we get the injury report,
- 56:17Speaker 1: I'll have more of an answer then because is Trey
- 56:20Speaker 1: also hurt? Is he also not playing? Like there's gonna
- 56:23Speaker 1: be a lot of gamesmanship if well Carter is gone,
- 56:26Speaker 1: not if with Carter gone, and if Trey is also
- 56:30Speaker 1: unable to go. So I think that creates a little
- 56:32Speaker 1: bit of walkiness. But yes, I do think someone gets.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Called up.
- 56:39Speaker 1: Oh Man, Charles says, the Cardinals do crazy stuff in
- 56:43Speaker 1: the back with safety, is the rest of the league
- 56:44Speaker 1: not so much. Yeah, the Cardinals are super creative. I
- 56:46Speaker 1: mean they also play a lot of just like three
- 56:48Speaker 1: high three safety looks, but yeah, they essentially weaponize Buddha
- 56:52Speaker 1: Baker kind of like how what Ohio State does in
- 56:56Speaker 1: college football with Caleb Downs where they'll play three safety,
- 57:00Speaker 1: but Downs they'll play like some Tampa to invert where
- 57:03Speaker 1: Caleb Downs is that middle Tampa player, that pole runner,
- 57:07Speaker 1: but instead of playing it from linebacker and carrying someone deep,
- 57:10Speaker 1: he plays it from the top down. You know, it's
- 57:12Speaker 1: Tampa two Robert or Tampa too invert at times they
- 57:14Speaker 1: call it. They just the Cardinals just weaponized Buddha Baker.
- 57:17Speaker 1: They let him play anywhere and everywhere, and it is awesome.
- 57:22Speaker 1: I think that's a large part of why they do that.
- 57:24Speaker 1: But it's schematically, very very creative. But I do think
- 57:27Speaker 1: there are some teams that spin their safeties more, or
- 57:30Speaker 1: they'll run cover two and one of the split field
- 57:33Speaker 1: safeties is a safety. The other one is their nickel
- 57:36Speaker 1: or is one of their outside corners. But yeah, the
- 57:39Speaker 1: Cardinals do a lot of really really really fun schematic
- 57:42Speaker 1: stuff on the back end. The Cardinals are. The Cardinals
- 57:44Speaker 1: defense was one of my favorite watches last year on tape.
- 57:46Speaker 1: I watched them throughout the year and then more in
- 57:48Speaker 1: the offseason, and it's one of the units I'm most
- 57:51Speaker 1: excited to see about this year, especially with some of
- 57:53Speaker 1: the additions they made to their defensive front. I think
- 57:55Speaker 1: could really help them. On the back end. They've got
- 57:57Speaker 1: some dudes there. We'll see what Will Johnson can be
- 57:59Speaker 1: as a rookie. I'm excited. Bum bum Oh, Pizzas makes
- 58:11Speaker 1: sense that way. I like a mean fronterary. Yeah, I
- 58:13Speaker 1: would love that. Yeah, we'll kind of see. Oh, this
- 58:15Speaker 1: is a fair comment from Roy Royce saying Zion low
- 58:17Speaker 1: maybe a call up might want that true one tech
- 58:20Speaker 1: against Baltimore. I'd like them to do that. I don't
- 58:23Speaker 1: know if they will. I'm just confused in general with
- 58:25Speaker 1: what the Bills want from a one tech perspective, with
- 58:29Speaker 1: the rumors of they were going to take Tyler Williams
- 58:32Speaker 1: at the end of round one if he was there,
- 58:34Speaker 1: but then they said they doubled down on what they
- 58:36Speaker 1: already had and took t J. Sanders and then took
- 58:38Speaker 1: Dion Walker, who I know, Dian Walker's huge, but he
- 58:40Speaker 1: does not play like a one tech. I don't know
- 58:42Speaker 1: how much the Bills value the true one tech role
- 58:45Speaker 1: at this point, because taking Tyler Williams in the first
- 58:47Speaker 1: round would indicate that they value it highly, but then
- 58:51Speaker 1: they didn't look to kind of replicate that even in
- 58:53Speaker 1: a rotational role through the draft or in free agency.
- 58:57Speaker 1: So I don't know at this point. I don't know.
- 58:59Speaker 1: At this point, Joey says, do you have any worries
- 59:02Speaker 1: that we get some sugar high Allen because he won
- 59:04Speaker 1: that MVP and punded say Lamar should have won. I
- 59:07Speaker 1: will always kind of worry about the emergence of sugar high,
- 59:10Speaker 1: Josh Allen. I don't think from this perspective though, like
- 59:14Speaker 1: not because of the MVP related and tying it into lamar.
- 59:16Speaker 1: I just think I think there is the propensity for
- 59:19Speaker 1: Alan to get a little jittery or sugar high. Ye
- 59:22Speaker 1: and that's not proper grammar, but whatever, I do think
- 59:25Speaker 1: he still has that in him, you know, I mean,
- 59:28Speaker 1: even to start the AFC Championship game. I think the
- 59:30Speaker 1: way that game ended this past year, well still in
- 59:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. At this past season. The ending gets
- 59:35Speaker 1: talked about so much, and the lack of James Cook
- 59:37Speaker 1: gets talked about so much. But Allen started off not
- 59:39Speaker 1: good in that AFC Championship game. He was missing guys,
- 59:42Speaker 1: he wasn't hitting his reeds, his mechanics weren't great like
- 59:46Speaker 1: you would tell he was. I'm not gonna say he
- 59:48Speaker 1: wasn't rattled or like shook. But and it wasn't sugar
- 59:51Speaker 1: high Josh Allen. But there was some inconsistency to his
- 59:53Speaker 1: game when he had largely been even keeled in his
- 59:57Speaker 1: approach and in his execution for the heavy majority of
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the year, excluding games where the games kind of put
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: their offense out of whack. But yeah, I think there's
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: always a chance you get sugar high or jittery Josh Allen.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: But I don't think it'll be because like he won
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: the MVP and punted, say, Lamar should one. If anything,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I think you might get it. On the other side,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I think Lamar might try and press a little bit
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: because of the MVP conversation or because they lost to
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: the Bills last year in the playoffs. Lamar is and
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I know so many people say this about so many guys,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: but Lamar is super competitive, and he's super hard on
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: himself for all the losses and the poor play that
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: the Ravens had in the playoffs. At times, he's super
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: hard on himself, like every time they lose, like he
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: calls himself out and is really hard on himself. And
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I could see him pressing a little bit more than
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Alan potentially, But we'll see, we will see. We will
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: see some more comments here. Bills fan seventy eight eighty
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: three says if the Bills use Bishop in a deep
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: role just to be interchangeable, they will lose games. I
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: don't think they'd use him just to be interchangeable. But
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you can't you can't just get completely you just can't
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: get completely siloed with the roles for guys. That ties
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: into coverage, predictability, and situational predictability, and then the offense
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: being able to dictate to you more knowing, Okay, if
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: they're not going to drop Bishop Deep. Every time we
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: see him as the down safety, we know he's going
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: to stay down or he's going to drop. Maybe he
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: drops at the last minute it's too high. But either way,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: if I'm the quarterback and I know that they're not
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: dropping Cole Bishop Deep, I know that I can key
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: in on Taylor rap and be like, Okay, either he's
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: going to be the single high safety or it's going
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: to be a split field.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: Look.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: That changes a lot of the kind of the pre
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: to post snap picture change you can have as a defense.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: And then some of the menu that you can access,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: some of the menu the offense can access. It just
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: opens you up to be dictated too as a defense.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: And again that's part of I talked about it so
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: much as obfseason. That's what scares me a little bit
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: about the Bills say this year, is because I don't
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: think either Rapper Bishop are an ideal post safety, but
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: they're both gonna play it. They're both gonna play single high,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: They're both obviously gonna play in the two high looks,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: and that's what gives me pause and some concern with
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: some of this defense. But I was encouraged by some
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: of Bishops playing in the preseason, and I think he's
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: just a dude who needs time on task. I also
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: think this is something where you know, maybe there are
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: some growing pains and you suffer early on with Bishop
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: while he gets that time on task, But this could
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: be something that pays off towards the end of the season.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: He's got the athletic profile. The Bills have gotten a
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: lot of blood from the defensive backstone over the years,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: and Bishops got a lot of really fun traits that
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: they could potentially tap into. And I say that as
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: a person who I didn't love his fit when they
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: drafted him, just based off of what he did at
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Utah and how he operated and where I think he's best.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I've talked about it all offseason the show, I talked
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: about it in the film breakdown I did last week
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: on Cole Bishops specifically and solely on him. So I
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: say all that as a guy who didn't love the
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Bishop fit and pick for the Bills, But I do
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: think with the time on task, that'll help him a
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: lot being able to play alongside Taylor Rapp, who's very
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: heady and knows this defense well, should help him. Maybe
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: even Jordan Poyer being back and on the practice squad
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: helps him. I do think for as much as it's
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like a worry thing of all, you know, Bishop's not
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: going to get it. He can't function in that way,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: it's not going to work. For as much of a
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: possibility as that exists, I do think it's a fair
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: pretty decent equivalence that the other side of the coin
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: is true, where if he just gets more time on task,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: he will be good in that role and it could
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: be something that maybe he struggle through a little bit
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: to start the year, but it pays off come November
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: and December and January and maybe February. Jessica says, was
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: anyone else happy watching Bill Belichick in UNC gets smashed yesterday?
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: I absolutely loved it. I love the TC. You just
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: poured it on and by the fourth quarter Kirk Kirkstreet
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: was putting headphones on his dog because that game was
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: just done. Jeff says, Josh and Kean going to have
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: a huge game Sunday night, envisioning two touchdowns as a pair.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Look for Dian Walker to make a big play early.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I feel it that's fair. We gotta stop because we
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: got a super chat. Just Tippy Canoe says, thank you
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: for being here and think for the stupid chat. Just
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Tippy Canoe says, can we just put Michael Hoyt in
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: a wig and different jersey number and sneak him out there?
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I've thought of that for like like high school games
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: and things like that, Like it's easy to just like
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: kind of sneak someone out there. That's fair. Maybe they
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: could put them in someone else's jersey, see who they get,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: you know, maybe have them dressed the same way, wear
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: an arm sleeve. You know, you're gonna have to have
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: him wear a visor so they can't tell it's him.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: You never know. We'll see, we'll see, But but where
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: are we? Arthur? I like this question from what I
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: read quickly. Arthur says, if you had to guess, when
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: do you see the Bills defense breaking out some more
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: creative looks week one or after the suspension in week
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: six or not really at all. I'm very hopeful we
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: see them sprinkled throughout the first quarter or so of
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: the season. My thought is, we're really not going to
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: see more of them until Michael Hoyt comes back, because
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I think he's a big part of the creativity that
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: they can have up front. I think the most creative
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: that they'll get early on, or at least that I'm
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: hoping for, is, you know, we have t J. Sanders
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: lined up on a tackle and Dion Walker is next
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: to him, lined up in a five technique like on
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: the outside shoulder of the tackle. Or we've got Rousseau
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: lined up next to Bosa and then Matt Malana is
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: head up on the center. We've got a five zero
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: look in different creative ways, and then some simulated pressures,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: some creeper pressures. So I'm hoping for some schematic creativity,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: but I'm expecting really for the full menu to unroll
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: once Michael Hoyt comes back. I don't think they're not
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: going to do it at all. And as I just
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: they can't continue to be what they've been the past
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: several years. They cannot continue to just be, hey, you
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: know what coverages you're gonna get from us? Hey, yeah,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: we're just gonna do a four down over front and
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: rush for and play coverage behind it. They can't continue
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: to do that in big moments, in big against big teams.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: They need more creativity, and they've done that before. The
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: odd mirror package that I've broken down on the show,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: we've broken down in the film room. I've showed it
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: on social that odd mirror package that Georgia has been
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: running at Georgia and college football for years. They busted
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: that out several years ago against the Chiefs, and they've
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: sprinkled it in against different teams at different times. They've
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: shown an ability to press the buttons a little bit
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: and change the dials and tweak some things. So they've
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: recognized when they've needed things in the past, and I
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: just they need it, not on a wholesale level where
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: it's a complete change, but they need more injections of that.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: And I really do feel like they know that or
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: they feel that, or at least I hope they know that,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: and I hope they feel that. So I'm expecting, you know,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: tweaks in more creativity early on and then the dials
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: to get turned up even further once Michael Hoyt comes back,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: and if not happened, If that doesn't happen, I'm gonna
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: be very disappointed and probably very frustrated because I just
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: I still don't think they have the horses up front
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: just to rush for and play coverage, like that's a
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: hard thing to do. That's really like you have the
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Jimmy's and Joe's advantage, and I don't think the Bills
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: do as of right now. And again, it's a harder
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: thing to have, and I don't think the Bills have
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: that right now. I'm pulling this up because there's made
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: me laugh. But r J's pessimism got me here. I
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: just says, if anything, our safeties are interchangeable because they
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: both suck and coverage but are both solid in the box.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Oh Urjay, never change, never change, never change. But Miel says, sorry,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: my internet went out and I missed ten minutes of
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: the show. Who do you think wins on Sunday? Go Bills.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: I'm far too superstitious to answered this question. I think
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: it's gonna be I'm not gonna I can't. I don't
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: even want to say. I'm far too super sisous to
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: make any kind of prediction. But I appreciate you being here,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Thank you for coming back after your internet went out. Charles,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: in reference to Mike Sneak and Michael Hoyle on the field. Yeah,
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: like Bobby Valentine's style. Yeah, when he came back with
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: what the mustache and the glasses for the Mets. Yeah,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: one of their black uniforms. As a Red Sox fan,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I hate, oh god, those Bobby Valentine years were terrible.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Oh uh by John Robertsons. We have to remember Hide
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: and Poyer had experience when they came to Bills. Yeah,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you know, I think McDermott and company had a strong
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: hand in their trajectory and development. But yeah, they were
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: somewhat seasoned, especially Hyde and then the pedigree that he
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: came from playing at Iowa and then playing with Green Bay.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Poyer was more of the unknown, but yeah, I guess
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: a fair point. Arthur says, Also, how bad did you
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: feel when you say Carter got injured after you said
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: he is the most unproductive player you've ever seen? Yeah,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I mean I feel bad regardless when anybody gets hurt
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: in the NFL, if they're a productive player, if they're
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: not a productive player. I never want anybody to get hurt.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: I never want anybody to lose their job. It's a
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: tough business. That's why I always advocate for players chasing
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: the bag and the contract whenever they can. It was
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: why I had no problem. If you know James Cook
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: wanted fifteen million a year and you can get it,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Go get it, bro, Like you never know. The Carter
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: example is a good example. Didn't get hurt in the game.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: He got hurt in just practice or working out or whatever.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Like you never know when your next movement, your next snap,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: your next whatever. You have no idea when that next
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: snap or whatever it can be your last or be
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: one that is significantly damaging to the rest of your
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: career and by extension, your livelihood. So yeah, I always
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: feel bad when dudes get hurt. But the reality was
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: he was in I'm not trying to be cold like
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: he was a very ineffective player last year. I hoped
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: for better from him this year, and it sucks that
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: he's not going to get that opportunity, and it sucks
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: that he got you know, not just something that'll take
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: him out a year, but you're recovering from an achilles.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: The first year you come back, you're still not really yourself.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: So this is really going to be like like twenty
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: twenty seven is really one we'll be able to see
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: him fully recovered even if he plays next year, So
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: it just sucks all the way around. I feel for him.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Great call, Jeff. Jeff says, can't wait to get the
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: first large pie and twenty wings of the year Sunday night.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I'm doing that Sunday day. I'm not gonna be able
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: to make it through all the Sunday without getting pizza
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: early on, and you know, of course I'm gonna be
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: getting one by pizza. Great comment here from curtisaying, I'm
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: interested in how much the new d line coach changes
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: things up. I'm right there with you. Talked about a
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: little earlier with Spence Ryan Nielsen, his propensity for five
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: man rushes and pressure packages with that and twists and
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: stunts and games and some sims and creepers. I'm hopeful,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: I'm trying. I am hopeful. I don't think you bring
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: him in and Mike Pellegrino in and Michael Hoyt in
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: and invest in the defensive line and lose the way
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: you have the past several years, all of these breadcrumbs.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: It's just far too much to think that they're just
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: gonna come out and be the same type of schematic
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: defense that they've been in the past over years, like
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: I just can't see let me backtracked. I could see
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: that happening, but it would just be like, come on,
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: like you just how many times are you gonna touch
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: the stove and burn your hand before you realize you
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: shouldn't put your hand on the stove, Like that's kind
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: of where we're gonna we're at right now. And if
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: they don't tweak or lean into it a bit, and
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: if all these breadcrumbs are all for not, I'm gonna
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: lose my mind. And it takes a lot for me
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: to lose my mind, I would be frustrated. Artist is
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: not gonna lie. I kind of just wanted that reaction
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: with you, and well played, RJ. You got me. I
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: do think both Wrap and Bishop do have issues and coverage,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: though Wrap due to physical ability, Bishop due to mental process.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Absolutely I echo I echoed that in the film breakdown.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I did a Bishop last week and throughout this offseason.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: I mean I mentioned earlier with Spence. Bishop has the range,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: although I don't think he plays as fast and as
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: athletically as his testing times indicate, but you know he
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: has more of the range and athleticism for those coverage roles,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: but he doesn't have the processing and seeing the game
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: from depth at that level. Yet. Wrap, on the other hand,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: does have the mental side. He can process, he can
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: see the game that way, but he doesn't have the
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: athleticism of the range or the foot speed. So yeah,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: it's it's just it's just wonky the overlap between the
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: two versus what what they could have. Yeah, I and
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: then both are good in the box, Both are good
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: playing the run, Both are good triggering and shooting gaps.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Both are good. Is like kind of like almost a
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: big nickel apex Bishop is better because the athleticism allows
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: them to cover up, you know, in man against tight
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: ends and running backs. But I mean, Taylor Rapp won
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: a Super Bowl with the Rams as the big nickel.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: They moved him from being a starting safety to the
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: big nickel on third down packages, almost like a dime linebacker,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I should say. And he had reps in the Super
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Bowl where he's covering down on Jamar Chase and he's
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: doing well in the high underneath and the low intermediate.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Like it's it's just weird how they built this safety room,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: especially after all the years of having interchangeability between hide
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: and employer deep and in the box and now where
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: they are now, it's it's just weird where they've leaned
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: into and kind of frustrating, especially for me, Like I'm
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: a coverage guy, I'm a defense guy. I love dB play, yeah,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: and it's it's just a little frustrating and a little
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: odd at the same time. But we'll see all the
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: time on task yields. Are there as any thoughts on
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: Jabrill Preppers. I don't think he fits, you know, I
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: would take him over to mar Hamlin because I think
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: the versatility is nice in his game, but I think
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: they like Damar and he's not going anywhere. And then
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: if I'm adding a safety, it needs to be somebody
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: who has range and who can play more of the
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: ballhawk coverage type of role, and I don't think that's
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Grabrill Preppers. He's more in the Cole Bishop type of
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: role and more in the Taylor Rapp type of mold.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: He's another down safety, box safety, apex type of dude,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: and I don't think they need that as much as
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: they do more of a rangy ballhawk type of dude
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: on the back end who can play more of that
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: post safety and or even just in quarters, looks and
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: reads and stuff like that. I wouldn't mind the addition
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: if it meant somebody else was going out, But as
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: far as like plug him in and have him be
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: the starter, I'm not there with that yet more just
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: because it's a little redundant with what they already have.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: You know, it's not redundant. The best pizza in Buffalo,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: New York One Pie Pizza. Jeff had the comment earlier.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: He said he can't wait for that first large pie
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: and twenty wings on Sunday night for Bills versus Ravens.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: One Pi Pizza would be the best pizza for you
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: to have this opening. Whether it's Thursday night for the
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: opening night regular season game, I think it's what Thursday
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: night we got Eagles, Cowboys. Friday we've got Chargers and Chiefs.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: So whether you're getting pizza Thursday night, whether you're getting
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: at Friday night, whether it's Saturday, whether it's Sunday, whether
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: it's for the Bills, whether it's for not the best
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo, New York resides at One Pie Pizza,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Sweet sauce, pie cup and charp pepperoni at Great Cheese.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: The sauce ratio. They chop up veggies and whatever toppings
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: you get sprinkled evenly across the pie. They have a
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: pizza named after this show and the cover one brand.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: They make their own homemade blue cheese and it absolutely slaps.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: They have really good salads well. They also have a
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: catering division where they just make a ton of great
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: different types of dishes and food. So if you got
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: like an office event or a birthday or any kind
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: of party, their catering division can knot get out of
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: the part for you. The online menu for their catering
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: division and for one Pie Pizza as just the pizza
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: aspect can both be found in the episode show notes,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: wh they're here on YouTube or whichever podcasting Apple platform
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: we are listening to this show on. They make amazing
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: food and they do a lot of good for the community.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I talk about it every week, and I say that,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: I talk about it every week every week. Partnering with
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: the SPCA, partnering with the Alzheimer's Foundation, partnering with Rosword,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: trying to knock out cancer toys for tots. I always
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: mention those four, but they do even more than that.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: They're just really good people trying to make a difference
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: in the community and the city of Buffalo, and then
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: also providing everybody with tremendous pizza and food on top
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: of that. So if you live in the Buffalo area,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: or if you're coming up for the game, get yourself
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: to one Pie pizza. You will not be disappointed in
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: any shape, form or fashion. Get yourself some one Pi pizza.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: And oh Steven has a quick question. Steven says, I'd
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: love to hear you do a breakdown as to why
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: or what or why Carter is so bad. We've done
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: in the film room and I've talked about it here.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Essentially his he was in a very ineffective as a
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: pass rusher and also ineffective as a run defender as well,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: getting blown off the ball by double teams, getting sealed
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: and moved against individual base blocks, not being able to
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: hold his gap, and then from a pass rushing standpoint,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: not a lot of penetration, not a lot of moves
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: being stalemated, installed at the line, just really ineffective overall.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: The tape shows it, the metrics showed it, and I
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: think I talked about this, I think a couple weeks ago.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: I think what's unfortunate for Carter is he was more
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: of a pure three tech at Duke and played a
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: little lighter and they just let him penetrate and attack
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: and get a field. The run defense struggles were there.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: You'd se him struggle against double teams and you know,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: get displaced, but he had more pass rush juice because
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: he played lighter. The Bills had him play and also
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: had Austin Johnson drop weight last year, so almost instead
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: of having Johnson play more of a one tech role
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: like he had at previous stops and having Carter play
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: as more of the three like he did a Duke,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: they had both of them to try to be able
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: to play three tech and one tech. And I think
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: that hurt Carter a lot, just with him having to
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: play a role that wasn't really suited to his play
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: style and his experience at one tech and then having
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: to do that in the NFL, and then having to
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: rotate so heavily. So I don't think he was necessarily
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: set up for success with what the Bills wanted from him,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: And it looked like they were replicating that type of
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: role again this year with the interchangeability, but it's really
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: just kind of the ineffectiveness against both the pass and
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: the run. You're not getting juice, you're not getting by
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: guys and heating up the quarterback on tape or from
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: an advanced metric perspective. And then against the run, yeah,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: just getting displaced, getting blown off the ball backwards or
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: side to side. He had a couple of nice plays
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: against the Texans early on in the year, which I
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: was now that that got me hopefull. I was like, Okay, babe,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: he's turning the corner a little bit. We're seeing some
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: more from him. But it just didn't stick. And there
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: were a handful of good plays that he made, but
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: nothing to indicate that he was going to be a
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: mainstay on this roster. And I think even coming into
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: this year him making the fifty three, I think he
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: was very much defensive tackle five out of the five
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: defensive tackles that were there. Maybe he played more his
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: defensive tackle four because they wanted to keep Dean Walker
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: fresh and keep him on maybe a pitch count to
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: let him just be a true game wrecker whenever he
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: does get in there. But if Larry ogun Jobe wasn't suspended,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I don't think Dwayne Carter would have made the fifty three,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: unfortunately for him, but we'll see what happens coming out
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: of his injury. I'm gonna throw up the band, and
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: that says Tootles, folks, because we're gonna start to say
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: goodbye and go watch Hard Knocks now. If you're not
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: watching already before you leave, please please, please thank you.

- 1:19:33Speaker 1: by making them watch this show. I might be monkeying
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: with the content a little bit for Disguised Coverage this
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: year instead of doing and you know, for the regular
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: watchers listeners of this show, feel free to get at
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: me on social with feedback or in the comments on YouTube.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: I'm thinking about tweaking the format this year for Disguised
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: covers instead of doing kind of the matchup show and
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: preview stuff that Even though I know we do it
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: differently here and we dig into more of the x's
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and o's and the scheme and structure and combining that
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: with the advanced metrics, I know that's different than a
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: lot of other people and how they approach these matchup shows.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: I still do think maybe there's a bit too much
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: overlap with the matchup in preview aspects. I'm thinking about
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: diving into more of, you know, a siloed focus on
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: certain schematic elements, bringing up you know, charts or graphs
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: or numbers or film, potentially doing pre recorded episodes and
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: uploading them earlier on a Tuesday or a Monday or
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: something like that. So I'm kicking around some different format options.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: If there's something that you would like to see, let
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: me know on social, let me know in the cover
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: one discord, let me know on YouTube. If you want
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: me to stay the course with this format, let me
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: know that as well. Obviously, the feedback from you folks,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: it matters a ton to what I do. And I
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: also really appreciate, you know, kind of the community we
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: built here on the show and in the live chat
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: and the back and forth that you folks have with
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: one another, and you know, with myself and the questions
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: and the live format so and the discussion and engagement
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: that these type of shows generate from the matchup perspective.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: So I'm weighing a lot of options and thoughts and
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I would love any and all feedback from any of
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: you folks. So yeah, appreciate you for joining me on
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: this Tuesday night heading into Bill's Ravens. Thank you for
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: the kind words for Spence throughout the show, for myself
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: throughout the show. I appreciate everybody for stopping by and

- 1:21:20Speaker 1: and yeah, I hope you and your family and friends

- 1:21:27Speaker 1: I will see you when I see you. I did
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: a film break down a cold Bishop last week, and
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: I also did a season preview with Mina Kimes from ESPN.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: Both of those are up on the channel. Feel free
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: to check out both of those. And Yeah, thank you
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: for the kind words, Go bills, drop the like, thank
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: you for all the stuff. I'm not pulling it up
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: because it's corny to I feel it's corny to pull
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: up kind stuff for myself when I'm by myself. But
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: I see the nice stuff in the comments and I
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: appreciate it. I will see you, folks when I see you.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: God speed. If you're going to the game this weekend,
