- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. The president of Memorial University isn't ruling
- 0:10Speaker 2: out the possibility of more job losses when MUN's next
- 0:13Speaker 2: budget cycle begins. The university has eliminated more than 100 positions,
- 0:18Speaker 2: resulting in $ 12. 7 million in annual savings. Memorial is currently
- 0:24Speaker 2: grappling with a major budgetary deficit in excess of $ 20 million,
- 0:29Speaker 2: and a number of decisions have been made to address
- 0:31Speaker 2: the shortfall. That includes plans to sell off a number
- 0:34Speaker 2: of assets, including the Harlow Campus, Signal Hill Campus, and
- 0:38Speaker 2: the Johnson Geocenter. While most of the affected job positions
- 0:42Speaker 2: were eliminated through attrition and retirements, there were 19 employees
- 0:47Speaker 2: that had to be let go. There are no further
- 0:50Speaker 2: workforce reductions planned for the current fiscal year, but President
- 0:53Speaker 2: Janet Morrison can't guarantee that there won't be more layoffs
- 0:57Speaker 2: in the next fiscal year.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Memorial does not have multi-year revenue commitments from the government,
- 1:05Speaker 3: and we're working towards that. I have very much appreciated
- 1:08Speaker 3: the collaboration that I've experienced with government since starting a
- 1:13Speaker 3: year ago. But in the absence of that, we have
- 1:15Speaker 3: revenue uncertainty. And again, we're doing everything we can to
- 1:19Speaker 3: better control our future, but that chronic insecurity and unpredictability
- 1:26Speaker 3: leaves us in a bit of a tricky spot around
- 1:29Speaker 3: making commitments beyond this fiscal.
- 1:31Speaker 2: A 45-year-old woman is facing charges following a disturbance involving
- 1:35Speaker 2: a walker and a driver on the main road through
- 1:38Speaker 2: Gambo late last week. Glovertown RCMP received numerous calls about
- 1:42Speaker 2: an incident on J.R. Smallwood Boulevard around 10 o'clock Thursday morning.
- 1:46Speaker 2: The woman involved in the altercation allegedly made threats against
- 1:50Speaker 2: another person with a weapon in hand. There were no injuries.
- 1:54Speaker 2: The accused is facing charges of assault with a weapon
- 1:56Speaker 2: and uttering threats. She was released on conditions to appear
- 2:00Speaker 2: in court at a later date. Financial market odds are
- 2:04Speaker 2: overwhelmingly in favor of a seventh straight interest rate hold
- 2:07Speaker 2: from the Bank of Canada on Wednesday. But the central
- 2:10Speaker 2: bank heads into the decision once again under a cloud
- 2:13Speaker 2: of U.S. trade war uncertainty. The central bank has kept
- 2:17Speaker 2: its benchmark rate on hold at 2.25% for nearly a
- 2:22Speaker 2: year now. Dolly Parton, the country music star who broke
- 2:26Speaker 2: barriers and became a beloved icon, was laid to rest
- 2:30Speaker 2: over the weekend, according to her family.
- 2:32Speaker 1: The private burial taking place in Nashville, days after her
- 2:36Speaker 1: death at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Dolly's niece, Lainey Mae Parton, sharing the news in a
- 2:43Speaker 1: social media post, remembering her aunt, whom she called Granny.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Lainey writing, From the time I was little, my granny
- 2:50Speaker 1: always had a way of making me feel like I
- 2:52Speaker 1: was enough. She believed in me before I even knew
- 2:55Speaker 1: how to believe in myself.
- 2:57Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
