- 2:23Speaker 2: Want to welcome into the show now our good friend
- 2:26Speaker 2: Jamon Schmid from Good Little Industries of the Summit. Good morning, sir,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and welcome to the show.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Hey, hey, thank you, thank you.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. Got a new store opening
- 2:34Speaker 2: up YEP sixteen O three correct Canall Boulevard, west On
- 2:39Speaker 2: Patrick Street opens at nine this Thursday. I think some
- 2:41Speaker 2: of our stations are going to be their broadcasting live
- 2:43Speaker 2: for a couple of days. Tell us about this new store, dude,
- 2:45Speaker 2: so super awesome.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I think a lot of people also know it as
- 2:48Speaker 4: the old drug emporium building, So obviously if you know
- 2:51Speaker 4: the old store. It's a huge facility, and I think
- 2:55Speaker 4: it'll be one of the biggest stores that we actually have.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Of course, like we do, we'll have coffee, it'll be
- 3:00Speaker 4: a big celebration, and we may have some other vendors
- 3:02Speaker 4: out there. But anyhow, I suggest people get in line
- 3:06Speaker 4: because I think there's gonna.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Be a lot of people ready to get the stuff
- 3:09Speaker 2: out of The store opens up at nine am on
- 3:11Speaker 2: the Thursday morning, and we wanted people to know that
- 3:14Speaker 2: to Jamal, this is a traditional retail store because you'd
- 3:18Speaker 2: introduce the whole Bin's concept, which has gone extremely well.
- 3:22Speaker 2: We talked about that with you in the past, but
- 3:23Speaker 2: this is not that. This is a traditional what you
- 3:25Speaker 2: would think of as a just a classic retail store exactly.
- 3:29Speaker 4: And a great point because on social media, if you've
- 3:32Speaker 4: seen and we've talked about this earlier, right, it's a
- 3:34Speaker 4: fifty to fifty split. I always say between people who
- 3:36Speaker 4: love the Ben Store more absolutely hate it. And that's
- 3:39Speaker 4: totally fine, and we knew that before we opened the
- 3:42Speaker 4: Bend Store, but we wanted to really bring a new
- 3:44Speaker 4: building for the traditional retail model of racks and tags
- 3:48Speaker 4: and so anyways to have it be in the old
- 3:49Speaker 4: Dragon Portian building. Now, I mean, I think it's a great,
- 3:53Speaker 4: great pairing, and.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's a pretty good sized building as I best. I remember.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Oh man, I was in there yesterday and it's crazy
- 3:59Speaker 4: because I realize how big it was. I think the
- 4:02Speaker 4: previous building had high higher racks, and so our racks
- 4:05Speaker 4: are about I would say five foot to six.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Foot feet tall.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Anyways, you can see from the front of the back
- 4:10Speaker 4: it's huge.
- 4:11Speaker 2: What's going to be different about this store supposed to
- 4:14Speaker 2: some of your other locations? Anything any different about the
- 4:16Speaker 2: other than the size? Of course.
- 4:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 4: So of course one of the biggest locations we have.
- 4:20Speaker 4: But also we are added in are my Career Advisor
- 4:24Speaker 4: kiosk we did it, and also the outlet. It's basically
- 4:26Speaker 4: a kiosk that offers different services resume help, access to
- 4:30Speaker 4: DD two fourteen, basically our mission. We'll have one in house,
- 4:33Speaker 4: which we don't have in all of our locations there,
- 4:36Speaker 4: and then of course we'll also have our mission mobile
- 4:38Speaker 4: vehicle out front to help people with any of the
- 4:39Speaker 4: services we have to offer, Wheels to work program which
- 4:42Speaker 4: is transportation, and several other things that we have.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's one of the things I love about what you
- 4:45Speaker 2: folks do so well at Goodwill is it's not just
- 4:48Speaker 2: about the selling of the stuff. I mean you're selling
- 4:51Speaker 2: the stuff to continue on your mission of doing the
- 4:56Speaker 2: other things and many things people may not even realize
- 4:59Speaker 2: that Goodwill of the su does talk about that a
- 5:00Speaker 2: little bit, some of the service that people may not
- 5:02Speaker 2: be aware of exactly.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So what's cool about this too, to add on to
- 5:06Speaker 4: something we're doing for this location as well, is we'll
- 5:09Speaker 4: be doing a little round up thing for this location.
- 5:12Speaker 4: People who rounded up for our stores know that it
- 5:14Speaker 4: goes to our mission, but for those who don't know,
- 5:17Speaker 4: we'll have some stories on our website where you can
- 5:19Speaker 4: scan a QR code inside the store with some of
- 5:22Speaker 4: the financial have and you can read some of the
- 5:24Speaker 4: stories of these individuals that we've helped, whether it be
- 5:26Speaker 4: like an Emmanuel Combs who works for us currently who
- 5:29Speaker 4: had some issues coming up and really just needed a
- 5:31Speaker 4: chance at employment, or even like Lado Koyer, who actually
- 5:35Speaker 4: was our Beckley store manager who's now a district manager
- 5:38Speaker 4: and who literally came out of prison and was looking
- 5:41Speaker 4: for an opportunity. So there's several things we do from
- 5:43Speaker 4: transportation to helping people out of incarceraration or to just
- 5:46Speaker 4: getting people their next steps into employment. And I think
- 5:49Speaker 4: if you come to the store, come visit, come shop,
- 5:51Speaker 4: and then scan the QR code for our round up stuff,
- 5:53Speaker 4: you'll see that firsthand.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Trying to bunch mad again that from goodwill of some
- 5:57Speaker 2: of this new store is going to open up former
- 5:59Speaker 2: drug Emporium location on Thursday and nine am. But Dave
- 6:02Speaker 2: Island show in five ad line broadtooned part by Hustin's

- 6:12Speaker 2: up at Hustinspizza dot com. Describe if you will. This
- 6:17Speaker 2: is gonna be an odd question, but it's coming from me.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You should be used to it. Describe the average goodwill shopper,
- 6:21Speaker 2: because I don't think there is such a thing because
- 6:23Speaker 2: everybody it kind of goes across the board. It's people
- 6:27Speaker 2: that are looking for those unique odds and ends that
- 6:29Speaker 2: you can't necessarily find everywhere. It's people that are doing
- 6:32Speaker 2: all their shopping there. Talk about some of the different
- 6:34Speaker 2: type of shoppers you have.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I think under Goodul discussions, we really whether it's
- 6:40Speaker 4: age or what you shop for. I think they're seven
- 6:42Speaker 4: different categories. But of course your youth, they're typically looking
- 6:46Speaker 4: for those sweet thrift fines, those vintage clothes that their
- 6:51Speaker 4: parents wore, their grandparents wore that are back in style,
- 6:54Speaker 4: and then of course your mom's shopping for the kids.
- 6:56Speaker 4: I think we have seven different categories, and it really
- 6:59Speaker 4: fits the mold of what anybody needs, whether you want
- 7:02Speaker 4: that vintage fine or whether you just need something new
- 7:05Speaker 4: for work or a new suit jacket. I mean anything
- 7:08Speaker 4: is anything you can find a good Will.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Now, how are you on staff? Do you need more staff?
- 7:12Speaker 2: I mean you probably always need more staff, but how
- 7:14Speaker 2: are you on the staffing for the new location.
- 7:15Speaker 4: You're definitely not wrong about always needing more staff. Being
- 7:19Speaker 4: being workforce development, trying to push people into whatever career
- 7:22Speaker 4: they want to go into. We have people always exiting
- 7:25Speaker 4: the door, but we are always having people always come in. Anyhow,
- 7:28Speaker 4: we have enough staff right now, but through grand opening
- 7:30Speaker 4: weekend we'll see what happens. So if you are looking
- 7:32Speaker 4: for a job on the West Side, please contact us.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And again, you guys are such good community partners too,
- 7:39Speaker 2: because you're always involved in everything in the community, whether
- 7:42Speaker 2: it's here in Charleston or whether it's in your Teddy
- 7:44Speaker 2: the Valley location. How many how many locations of good
- 7:47Speaker 2: Will stores are there in West Virginia proximately.
- 7:49Speaker 4: West Virginia is a little bit harder question for me,
- 7:51Speaker 4: only because we have about five to six other good Wills. Okay,
- 7:55Speaker 4: we're a federated model, so there's about one hundred and
- 7:58Speaker 4: fifty organizations okay, on the world. But for us, we're
- 8:01Speaker 4: part of Southern Central, Southern and we have about eighteen locations.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Okay, and more coming, more coming, And well, we're excited
- 8:09Speaker 2: about having this one in Charleston because that drug and
- 8:11Speaker 2: Poorium location, you know, was such an iconic part of
- 8:14Speaker 2: Charleston for so many years. And I know I was
- 8:16Speaker 2: reading some of the comments on social media. People were
- 8:18Speaker 2: saying how that they hated to see and look, we
- 8:19Speaker 2: all hated to see drug and Porium in a way,
- 8:21Speaker 2: you know, but it is what it is. And I
- 8:24Speaker 2: think it's a great use of that facility because it
- 8:26Speaker 2: is a it is a huge facility. What are your
- 8:28Speaker 2: hours going to be?
- 8:29Speaker 4: So nine to nine, So we changed our hours this
- 8:31Speaker 4: year to extend it. We used to be nine to eight,
- 8:33Speaker 4: So nine to nine.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Every day, every day, Monday through Sunday. Yes, every day.
- 8:37Speaker 2: So your grand opening again is going to be on Thursday,
- 8:42Speaker 2: nine am. And I know, as I said to a
- 8:44Speaker 2: few of our radio stations, I think you're going to
- 8:46Speaker 2: be broadcasting live over the next couple of days. How
- 8:49Speaker 2: do you do your donations for that particular store?
- 8:52Speaker 6: People?
- 8:52Speaker 2: Are they any different there than what there are the
- 8:54Speaker 2: other locations.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I'm a little bit different just as far as the location.
- 8:57Speaker 4: So some of our some of our stords have it
- 8:59Speaker 4: in the back. People know that this location will have
- 9:02Speaker 4: it in the front. So fortunately it won't be hard
- 9:04Speaker 4: for you. If you go to the store and shop,
- 9:05Speaker 4: you're gonna see donation center in red letters on the
- 9:07Speaker 4: right side. And also we have a pretty cool graphic
- 9:10Speaker 4: on the doors that say donate here, change lives and read,
- 9:13Speaker 4: and so it'll be hard to mess all right.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Again, Everything will get underway when you open up the
- 9:18Speaker 2: doors at nine o'clock and I'm sure there'll be a great,
- 9:20Speaker 2: great crowd there and then through the weekend. It's good
- 9:22Speaker 2: busy time in Charles, great time to open up a
- 9:24Speaker 2: store with all the people coming into Charleston, you know,
- 9:26Speaker 2: for regatta and for the bike championships and so on
- 9:30Speaker 2: and so forth. Going to be busy time in a capital.
- 9:32Speaker 2: So do you guys are just doing great things? So
- 9:34Speaker 2: I will give you the final thirty or forty seconds
- 9:37Speaker 2: so to sell the storage ron yep.
- 9:39Speaker 4: So we'll have free coffee for those of you who
- 9:41Speaker 4: are in line that morning. So you early bird people,
- 9:44Speaker 4: we got free coffee for you. However many of you
- 9:46Speaker 4: there are, we will take care of that. We'll have
- 9:48Speaker 4: applash and cups. So whether you like a latte or
- 9:51Speaker 4: whether you just like your coffee black like I do,
- 9:53Speaker 4: whatever you want, we'll get it for you. And then
- 9:56Speaker 4: also I would say this, there are some amazing fines.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Whether it's signed. There's a signed cowboy, how I can't
- 10:02Speaker 4: remember the name on there. But we're going to post
- 10:05Speaker 4: some pictures of some of the stuff that we found
- 10:06Speaker 4: in the store, so you can get excited for this
- 10:08Speaker 4: there well.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And oddly enough, we just had a text where somebody said,
- 10:11Speaker 2: have you thought about putting up a Facebook page taking
- 10:13Speaker 2: photos of new items you may get donated and place
- 10:16Speaker 2: them on their alert or in order to alert the
- 10:19Speaker 2: public of any shopper that may want to come in
- 10:21Speaker 2: and pick it up. I mean, is that zoo there
- 10:23Speaker 2: you go there?
- 10:23Speaker 7: Right there, right there.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Yeah, we took pictures yesterday, so I'll be posting them
- 10:26Speaker 4: up soon.
- 10:27Speaker 6: All right.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And where is that Facebook page?
- 10:28Speaker 1: You just?
- 10:28Speaker 6: Oh?
- 10:29Speaker 4: Yeah, so Goodwill's summit. You just find it on Facebook
- 10:31Speaker 4: good Will Summit and then it'll pull it up, all right.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Jawan Schmid, appreciate you being here, my friend. Thanks a
- 10:35Speaker 2: lot of congratulations on the new store. It's nine to eighteen.

- 14:03Speaker 2: when you allow the public to come in maybe and
- 14:05Speaker 2: donate things, sometimes it's the public that is the problem
- 14:08Speaker 2: there because they just like drop stuff off and they
- 14:10Speaker 2: see it more as a garbage jump than anything else,

- 14:53Speaker 2: we learned something new. I would have never saw you
- 14:55Speaker 2: as a rocker, but you are a rocker.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Absolutely, yeah, absolutely, you know you're born and bread right.
- 15:01Speaker 2: All right, Well, congratulations. It was a tough primary election,
- 15:05Speaker 2: but the people of the Fourth chose you again.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, I made it through another one. So I
- 15:09Speaker 5: want to thank you for the to the people of
- 15:11Speaker 5: Fourth that's it's had a lot of thank yous to
- 15:13Speaker 5: give out there. This one, this one was a fight.
- 15:15Speaker 7: You know.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Labor unions came at me hard and ugly in the
- 15:18Speaker 5: in their super PACs and so it's but they lost
- 15:20Speaker 5: it there.
- 15:22Speaker 2: This seemed to me to be and we'll talk about this,
- 15:24Speaker 2: who have the interview, seemed to be to be a
- 15:27Speaker 2: particularly ugly campaign season, not just necessarily yours. And let's
- 15:30Speaker 2: face it, yours wasn't one of the ones that really
- 15:34Speaker 2: got a lot of the attention. You had some attacks
- 15:37Speaker 2: lobbed against you, but I don't know that you had
- 15:40Speaker 2: the type that maybe some other races did. But uh,
- 15:43Speaker 2: it was, Uh, it was a pretty ugly primary, it
- 15:46Speaker 2: really was.
- 15:47Speaker 5: It was it was, and I hope, uh we find
- 15:49Speaker 5: a better way out of this. That's Republicans can be
- 15:51Speaker 5: there and are their own worst enemies, I think when
- 15:54Speaker 5: it comes especially these super super majorities we have so
- 15:58Speaker 5: some of the stuff I saw across the state where
- 16:00Speaker 5: you have such a strong influence from outside money to
- 16:05Speaker 5: come in to tell Western Uians how to vote. And
- 16:07Speaker 5: then beyond that, I think the between the the far
- 16:12Speaker 5: left and far right of the Republican body, the viciousness
- 16:18Speaker 5: of that, I think is creating a chasm within the
- 16:21Speaker 5: party that we have got to figure a way around.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Now.
- 16:23Speaker 2: When you say, that's an interesting statement there, Senator tar
- 16:26Speaker 2: When you say the far left and the far right
- 16:29Speaker 2: of the Republican Party, you would think that would be
- 16:31Speaker 2: a statement about both sides. But you're saying, in the
- 16:34Speaker 2: Republican Party there is a far left and a and
- 16:36Speaker 2: a far right.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Yeah, there are. You know, it's I've had We've had
- 16:39Speaker 5: a lot of names for I guess what would call
- 16:41Speaker 5: it far because I there are a lot of people
- 16:43Speaker 5: call me far right. Come serving to send it with
- 16:46Speaker 5: me and you'll you'll find out that it's that in
- 16:49Speaker 5: far right. I don't take as an as an insult.
- 16:51Speaker 5: I think you know what it's. It's to me a
- 16:53Speaker 5: social conservative values or usually what people associate that with
- 16:58Speaker 5: the difference. I think that what I'm saying far right,
- 17:00Speaker 5: and a lot of times I've called them counter conservatives
- 17:03Speaker 5: because of what you're starting to see right now is
- 17:05Speaker 5: because you start to kill Republican leadership with that kind
- 17:07Speaker 5: of leadership.
- 17:09Speaker 6: Is that when you have such a a.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Strong avowment towards the social side and a complete ignorance
- 17:23Speaker 5: of the fiscal side. When you go down that path,
- 17:26Speaker 5: you're essentially doing very superficial legislation. And we are one
- 17:30Speaker 5: of the most conservative social states in the country by
- 17:33Speaker 5: our legislative policy, so we're there. So it's that we
- 17:37Speaker 5: got the group that those counter conservative groups that keep
- 17:39Speaker 5: trying to one up and one up it because they
- 17:41Speaker 5: campaign on it, and the lack of leadership and communication
- 17:45Speaker 5: there because of it. When you're getting into social policy,
- 17:49Speaker 5: everybody's an expert on how they feel. Nobody else is
- 17:52Speaker 5: an expert on how you feel. On economic policy. All
- 17:58Speaker 5: the experts are considered that come in to develop that.
- 18:01Speaker 5: So when you disregard that social or the economic side
- 18:05Speaker 5: of it, you get into that very individualistic piece of it,
- 18:08Speaker 5: and so it creates for superficial legislation because you don't
- 18:11Speaker 5: have teamwork, and ultimately it ends up in more dependence
- 18:18Speaker 5: on government because you start decreasing the ability to create jobs.
- 18:24Speaker 5: So we have got to fix that. I think coming
- 18:27Speaker 5: out of primary elections, I don't think that we have
- 18:31Speaker 5: a huge difference that happened in the Senate. I think
- 18:34Speaker 5: it could shift and still by fifty to fifty. I
- 18:37Speaker 5: think the governor pushed the House even further away from
- 18:41Speaker 5: you know, so I think that it's going to be
- 18:44Speaker 5: a could be a challenging session. And I've told a
- 18:48Speaker 5: lot of people that if the Senate gets it right
- 18:51Speaker 5: and the House maintains its posture, then then you could
- 18:56Speaker 5: have two of the three that are working together. If
- 19:00Speaker 5: the Senate doesn't get fixed and the House stays where
- 19:04Speaker 5: it is, I don't see how you have any major
- 19:08Speaker 5: wins coming out of it because you don't have enough
- 19:12Speaker 5: keeople working together.
- 19:13Speaker 2: What needs to be fixed in the Senate.
- 19:15Speaker 5: In your opinion, I think that we need to move
- 19:20Speaker 5: leadership into a true leadership activity instead of leadership by title.
- 19:26Speaker 5: So what we don't do in the Senate is there's
- 19:29Speaker 5: now which when we had all the big wins coming
- 19:33Speaker 5: that was a collective effort. It was a collective effort,
- 19:36Speaker 5: not just in the Senate, but Senate was certainly let
- 19:39Speaker 5: it because we'll go in start working on policy shortly
- 19:44Speaker 5: after the legislative session as a caucus. Hens in the air,
- 19:49Speaker 5: make your commitments. We're going to hold you to your votes,
- 19:52Speaker 5: to your commitments, and go through on in depth policy
- 19:55Speaker 5: that we came up with through all the people who
- 19:58Speaker 5: brought those problems to us. What happens now is whatever
- 20:03Speaker 5: think tank is most popular sends their model legislation. We
- 20:08Speaker 5: do not have caucuses that where it's a systematic problem
- 20:14Speaker 5: solving goal developing legislative drafting effort doesn't happen anymore, not
- 20:21Speaker 5: under this leadership. And that's what leadership of activity is.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Do you place and I want to put words in
- 20:27Speaker 2: your mouth again, we're talking to Sindar Eritard, do you
- 20:29Speaker 2: place the blame for that directly on the Senate President?
- 20:34Speaker 5: I like Randy so. Randy Smith is a good guy.
- 20:38Speaker 5: I think he's in a very tough situation. I think
- 20:41Speaker 5: he came in with the best of intentions, and I
- 20:45Speaker 5: think he's clawing to hang on to Senate president at
- 20:47Speaker 5: every cost right now. I think that's what's happened. I
- 20:52Speaker 5: just don't think he's had the skill set that is
- 20:56Speaker 5: required by people that sit in that seat that do well.
- 21:00Speaker 2: What's going to happen with the Senate presidents? In your opinion,
- 21:02Speaker 2: I know a lot of it. We're gonna have to
- 21:04Speaker 2: kind of play the waiting game, you know whatever. But
- 21:06Speaker 2: what what do you think is going to happen or
- 21:08Speaker 2: what would you like to see happened?
- 21:10Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:10Speaker 5: So what do I think is going to happen?
- 21:12Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 21:13Speaker 5: I know it's if you can draw out all the
- 21:15Speaker 5: probabilities and they're so close when you come down to
- 21:18Speaker 5: see you, we can go every possible way a senator
- 21:20Speaker 5: could vote or be pulled or be influenced by the
- 21:23Speaker 5: time that they vote these Senate presidential votes when they're
- 21:28Speaker 5: competitive or really close to What was like during redistricting
- 21:33Speaker 5: is that you really never know what you've got until
- 21:35Speaker 5: you got it. And so that's I think it's gonna
- 21:37Speaker 5: be that way this time because there's not a clear
- 21:40Speaker 5: majority within the Senate now to which way it leans.
- 21:44Speaker 5: What I hope happens. I hope that when we come
- 21:49Speaker 5: to that point for electing a Senate president, that we
- 21:52Speaker 5: choose somebody who will actually bring the caucus together both
- 21:58Speaker 5: sides of it, because there are people who can do that,
- 22:02Speaker 5: and that we start working as a team again for
- 22:04Speaker 5: the people West Virginia.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Would you like that to be you?
- 22:08Speaker 5: I no, you know, it's I don't. I don't think
- 22:09Speaker 5: it's me. And the reason I don't think it's me
- 22:12Speaker 5: is the first time I ran for Center president, it
- 22:15Speaker 5: wasn't that I wanted to be Center President. I've got
- 22:17Speaker 5: leadership skill. I think that's undeniable if you if you
- 22:20Speaker 5: go out and see what my team has done in
- 22:25Speaker 5: my private life, the leadership side of it, there's an
- 22:31Speaker 5: example after example after example. So I'm a CEO of
- 22:34Speaker 5: multiple organizations, have been president of multiple organizations, so and
- 22:39Speaker 5: done well.
- 22:41Speaker 6: The what we have.
- 22:44Speaker 5: What I did then is that I couldn't see anybody
- 22:46Speaker 5: else who had the potential to go in with the
- 22:50Speaker 5: challenges on the split. We had to pull a group
- 22:52Speaker 5: like that together to an effective end. So that's why
- 22:56Speaker 5: I ran for Center President period. It was never my
- 22:59Speaker 5: intention to going to be that person. So having not
- 23:05Speaker 5: got the Center present, I went back to work, came
- 23:07Speaker 5: back said, look, you know, I'm going to be a
- 23:08Speaker 5: district senator, going to work hard for the district, get
- 23:11Speaker 5: things done, get back to a little bit of business,
- 23:14Speaker 5: you know, because I'm sacrificed an awful lot of private
- 23:17Speaker 5: life in that finance chair position. So I went back
- 23:21Speaker 5: to do that. The people who were with me, I
- 23:26Speaker 5: can be polarizing myself, and so the people who are
- 23:29Speaker 5: on that far left side of the Republican Party, they
- 23:32Speaker 5: don't like me when it comes to policy. The people
- 23:36Speaker 5: on the very far right, they don't like me because
- 23:39Speaker 5: when it comes down to policy, they realize that they're
- 23:43Speaker 5: going to have to compromise sometimes to get social policy
- 23:48Speaker 5: to get the economic policy through.
- 23:50Speaker 7: And so.
- 23:50Speaker 5: But there are people who are friendlier with those ones
- 23:55Speaker 5: that are polar off, not off, pullar off, who are
- 24:01Speaker 5: pushed away by some by my philosophy at times. There's
- 24:05Speaker 5: enough of those. I think we can get a good,
- 24:09Speaker 5: hard center right leadership that gets back to economic policy.
- 24:14Speaker 5: And I said it a million times, the most conservative
- 24:16Speaker 5: thing we can do is to create a job. Creating
- 24:18Speaker 5: jobs shrinks government, It shreaks dependence on government. It gives
- 24:22Speaker 5: somebody a bigger reason than themselves. It gives them the
- 24:25Speaker 5: ability to grow families. It gives them, once you grow families,
- 24:28Speaker 5: having an accountability to families. That leads to a whole
- 24:31Speaker 5: lot of other considers conservative things that happen when you
- 24:33Speaker 5: improve family life in West Virginia. So right now we're
- 24:38Speaker 5: I don't feel like we're doing that in the Senate.
- 24:40Speaker 5: I feel like we're doing whatever is on Fox News
- 24:42Speaker 5: last night. So I think that there are people who
- 24:45Speaker 5: have that philosophy who can walk into gum do the
- 24:49Speaker 5: fiscal and the social that we're close enough that it
- 24:53Speaker 5: may be a one or two vote margin, but I
- 24:55Speaker 5: think we could put somebody in there.
- 24:56Speaker 2: So if it's not you, do you want to throw
- 25:00Speaker 2: out some people that you would support in that role?
- 25:02Speaker 2: People that I'm not gonna I'm not gonna make you,
- 25:04Speaker 2: you know, zero in and this is who I'm supporting.
- 25:06Speaker 2: But are there a few people in your opinion, Eric,
- 25:09Speaker 2: that that could fill that role or or do you
- 25:11Speaker 2: not want to say?
- 25:12Speaker 5: I think there's a very few. I think there's a
- 25:14Speaker 5: very fair enough. I think it's very few. I think
- 25:16Speaker 5: it's early. It's way early. Is very early, Yes, it
- 25:18Speaker 5: is way early. You know, you've seen a lot of
- 25:20Speaker 5: commitments of people coming out behind Randy. Oh, while I'm
- 25:22Speaker 5: behind Randy all the way. I tell you what I've
- 25:23Speaker 5: been through actually a few presidential elections now because I
- 25:28Speaker 5: was up there as an advisor, was involved in all
- 25:30Speaker 5: that stuff when it was happening before I sit and senate.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I'm telling you that when it comes out early that way,
- 25:38Speaker 5: it makes it less predictable than more predictable.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 25:42Speaker 5: Because when they're coming out that early, that hard, you'll
- 25:46Speaker 5: have a true A few that are true and close
- 25:48Speaker 5: to that that you can trust the other ones. You
- 25:51Speaker 5: got to figure out what their play is when they're
- 25:52Speaker 5: doing it.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's so it happens so often in
- 25:56Speaker 2: the world of politics. Again, we're talking to Senator Eric Tarr,
- 25:58Speaker 2: where everything is not so black and white. You know,
- 26:01Speaker 2: we're supporting this person, but are we really We're only
- 26:03Speaker 2: supporting this person because we want actually want this person in,
- 26:07Speaker 2: and supporting this person now will lead to like that
- 26:10Speaker 2: this person gets in, if that makes any sense. It
- 26:12Speaker 2: is for d Chess, Yeah, it is, it really is.
- 26:15Speaker 2: It is the after the primary election that got so
- 26:18Speaker 2: ugly in so many different races. Are you concerned about
- 26:22Speaker 2: the future of the Republican Party in West Virginia putting
- 26:25Speaker 2: it all back together again?
- 26:27Speaker 5: I think the Republican Party is going to be in
- 26:28Speaker 5: leadership for a long time here Western I think, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 5: there's that boat turned slowly. You look how long it
- 26:34Speaker 5: took for Republicans and the process that really by which
- 26:37Speaker 5: we came into leadership. It looked for people who don't
- 26:41Speaker 5: play attention to politics, it looked like it happened suddenly.
- 26:44Speaker 5: It was not suddenly. You know that that shift was
- 26:46Speaker 5: growing and growing, growing for us to come out to
- 26:50Speaker 5: where we're thirty two to two right now in the
- 26:53Speaker 5: Senate very likely coming now this general election could be
- 26:57Speaker 5: the same or less. Maybe it's gonna be in that
- 27:01Speaker 5: neighborhood still and in the House being about only five
- 27:04Speaker 5: percent of it that's going to be Democrat. It's going
- 27:08Speaker 5: to take a long time to shift that majority. So
- 27:12Speaker 5: it's I think the Republicans. If we lose it, it'll
- 27:14Speaker 5: be It won't be because the Democrats be It's because
- 27:17Speaker 5: the Republicans gave it to them, and that's where we
- 27:19Speaker 5: got to fix it.
- 27:20Speaker 2: The district that you serve in, Senator has had a
- 27:23Speaker 2: heck of a lot of growth in the last couple
- 27:24Speaker 2: of years. You know, we talked about data centers and
- 27:26Speaker 2: new core and so on. So where I live in
- 27:28Speaker 2: Tay's Valley and you live not far from me, it's exploding.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yet again, how do we keep that up in that area,
- 27:34Speaker 2: and how do we conversely spread that across West Virginia?
- 27:39Speaker 5: You know, And this is where you get to where
- 27:41Speaker 5: you get away from think tanks and you actually get
- 27:42Speaker 5: to solve in West Virginia problems. You know, So think
- 27:45Speaker 5: tanks are these national think tanks and they bring their
- 27:47Speaker 5: policies to West Virginia. That's where you get superficial legislation.
- 27:51Speaker 5: It's getting your legislation. It's not deep. So how we
- 27:53Speaker 5: did it to get a lot of this going the
- 27:54Speaker 5: first time is when you got when you've got a
- 27:58Speaker 5: big fish on the hook. Those big fish have big
- 28:02Speaker 5: networks and so they if they get excited enough to
- 28:06Speaker 5: drop a billion or ten billion in West Virginia, they're
- 28:10Speaker 5: excited enough to tell their friends why they did it.
- 28:14Speaker 5: So when they're telling their friends why they did it.
- 28:16Speaker 5: And I speak this from experience, you guys, I'm sure
- 28:20Speaker 5: you've what shark tank. There's a lot of your audiences
- 28:22Speaker 5: what shark tank you have? All these entrepreneurs come pitch
- 28:25Speaker 5: their ideas to the successful entrepreneurs. I've had that kind
- 28:31Speaker 5: of not to that level, but it's in business that
- 28:35Speaker 5: comes my way a lot. You have a lot of
- 28:37Speaker 5: entrepreneurs come saying, hey, Eric, you know, for love for you,
- 28:40Speaker 5: help invest in this. We're very diversified and people realize that,
- 28:44Speaker 5: and so you kind of go through and the first
- 28:46Speaker 5: thing that you start doing when you a friend brings
- 28:49Speaker 5: you those things, you start looking for the pitfalls because
- 28:52Speaker 5: there's a very few wins and a lot of ideas
- 28:54Speaker 5: that come your way, and so it's easy to shoot
- 28:57Speaker 5: things down. And you start shooting down things and you
- 28:59Speaker 5: really say even a person sometimes when you do that.
- 29:02Speaker 5: So what happens these big fish it doesn't change. It
- 29:06Speaker 5: doesn't change if there's three zeros or if there's ten
- 29:08Speaker 5: zeros behind it. The process is the same. It's a network.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Then some of you're saying, hey, you should come here
- 29:15Speaker 5: and do this because and then you've got questions one, two, three, four,
- 29:19Speaker 5: five and six. Well, that's where the legislature can really
- 29:23Speaker 5: come into play, is if you've got that big fish
- 29:26Speaker 5: trust and your legislator's enough or your governor enough to say, hey,
- 29:31Speaker 5: if we can get this fixed, I can bring these
- 29:34Speaker 5: next companies because it helps them too, right, they're close logistics,
- 29:38Speaker 5: It helps a lot. That that is momentum that was
- 29:42Speaker 5: created in what we used to do. So that's why
- 29:46Speaker 5: it's why once you got new Core and once you
- 29:48Speaker 5: got Berkshire and you've got to start digging into those networks.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Those networks are as diverse as you can imagine, and
- 29:56Speaker 5: so that momentum is what's been going So now We
- 29:58Speaker 5: went from having a record three billion dollar investment actually
- 30:02Speaker 5: at the time it was two point eight now to
- 30:05Speaker 5: record investments at the deck of billions, multiple deck of
- 30:08Speaker 5: billions levels that are coming into West Virginia. Those networks
- 30:11Speaker 5: continue to grow. But what we have to do is
- 30:13Speaker 5: stay in those networks. We have to because everybody's chasing it.
- 30:17Speaker 5: I saw in the news this morning, Boyd County of
- 30:19Speaker 5: Kentucky's getting a data center. Well, if we want them
- 30:23Speaker 5: here instead of there, whether it's data center or whether
- 30:26Speaker 5: it's a steel plant, chemical plant, technology plant, whatever it is,
- 30:32Speaker 5: that aerospace everybody's competing for that. The way you get
- 30:38Speaker 5: the insider trade on it is you get in the network,
- 30:42Speaker 5: and you have to have CEOs and executives around CEOs,
- 30:45Speaker 5: these fortune five hundreds that trust a legislator enough to
- 30:48Speaker 5: go to them and say, can you help me get
- 30:50Speaker 5: this done? Don't tie my name to it because it's
- 30:54Speaker 5: all publicly traded stuff, and so publicly traded things can
- 30:58Speaker 5: they Sentiment moves those a lot, and that publicly traded
- 31:03Speaker 5: value allows them to invest. So you have to have
- 31:07Speaker 5: somebody who trust you enough, be able to understand that
- 31:10Speaker 5: they know that you understand how sensitive where the information
- 31:16Speaker 5: is coming from is and then how impactful if you
- 31:20Speaker 5: get it done right it can be. That's how we
- 31:24Speaker 5: that's how we got this legislation. I mean, it's how
- 31:27Speaker 5: we did everything from twenty fifteen all the way up
- 31:31Speaker 5: to a couple of years ago. So and right now
- 31:34Speaker 5: it's it happens, but not at an effective level like
- 31:38Speaker 5: it used to.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Got a couple of quick texts before we let you go.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Once is, mister char why can't the state government get
- 31:43Speaker 2: together an institute an annual cost of living race for
- 31:46Speaker 2: state workers? We fall so far behind, especially with riots
- 31:49Speaker 2: and inflation.
- 31:50Speaker 5: Well part of its economic development. So that's the way
- 31:54Speaker 5: that you get to a long term solution on that
- 31:57Speaker 5: is that you you have to get long term economic
- 32:01Speaker 5: building that outpaces the inflationary rate. We haven't done that
- 32:07Speaker 5: yet well in West Virginia, and so in your public
- 32:11Speaker 5: employees are paid out of public cofers, and so if
- 32:14Speaker 5: you have coffers that are not outpacing inflation, it's very
- 32:18Speaker 5: difficult to give salaries a out pace inflation. So the
- 32:21Speaker 5: economy's got to.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Grow, all right, Dave asked senator charge, what's specific one
- 32:26Speaker 2: billion dollars to ten billion dollar big fish. Have he
- 32:28Speaker 2: or any of the Republican governors or legislator brought it
- 32:31Speaker 2: to the state in the past ten to fifteen years.
- 32:33Speaker 2: What's specifically deca billion investments, specifically data centers are a boondoggle?
- 32:39Speaker 5: Yes, so the deca billion, so one is Fidelius up
- 32:42Speaker 5: in Mason County. So which is now an end scale,
- 32:46Speaker 5: which is ultimately Microsoft, is what that one comes down to.
- 32:50Speaker 6: So that one.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Is going to start out a little over two gig
- 32:55Speaker 5: of a data center. They've already broke ground up there.
- 32:58Speaker 5: That that two gig on a low end is worth
- 33:01Speaker 5: about forty billion dollars a gig. On the high end,
- 33:06Speaker 5: it's about forty five billion dollars a gig. It scales
- 33:10Speaker 5: up to eight gig once it's all done.
- 33:13Speaker 6: So do that math.

- 36:31Speaker 2: Congratulations, Thank you, Dave.
- 36:33Speaker 6: I appreciate it very much. Thanks for having me now.
- 36:36Speaker 2: You're a longtime educator and give us the summary of
- 36:39Speaker 2: your career if you will.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Well, I started This was my thirty fourth year in
- 36:45Speaker 3: Putnam County, and I began as a teacher, the football coach, coach,
- 36:52Speaker 3: a little bit of everything, primarily football. My brother Greg,
- 36:56Speaker 3: who was a coach in Putnam County for years, where
- 37:00Speaker 3: he went to Florida to do that, I had a
- 37:03Speaker 3: tremendous influence on me. The way I saw him impact
- 37:08Speaker 3: student athletes and the.
- 37:10Speaker 6: Way he done things. I knew I wanted to do that.
- 37:13Speaker 3: So I got into teaching and coaching and thought I
- 37:17Speaker 3: would retire being a teacher and a football coach.
- 37:21Speaker 6: And after quite a.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Few years of that, and the Good Lord led me
- 37:29Speaker 3: to go into administration, which I wasn't real sure about,
- 37:34Speaker 3: but that's the direction that he gave me, and I
- 37:38Speaker 3: followed and began as assistant principal of course as the
- 37:42Speaker 3: athletic director too at Winfield High School, and after a
- 37:47Speaker 3: few years of that, then become principal. And I was
- 37:52Speaker 3: principal for leave eight nine years at Winfield High School,
- 37:56Speaker 3: and then got an opportunity to become assistant superintendent, which
- 38:03Speaker 3: again you know about the time we get comfortable in life.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Good Lord tugsas to do something else we got to follow.
- 38:10Speaker 3: So I come here as the assistant superintendent, and then
- 38:15Speaker 3: I've become the deputy superintendent. Last I believe it's November,
- 38:21Speaker 3: and then you know, here we are superintendent now. So
- 38:26Speaker 3: I've been extremely blessed. No matter what position I've been in,
- 38:32Speaker 3: God's been good and he continues to do through the
- 38:34Speaker 3: ups and downs. It doesn't matter. But that's been kind
- 38:38Speaker 3: of my pathway through the education field to Bruce.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Magrew again, who is the new superintendent of Putnam County Schools.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And you know, we hear a lot about the issues
- 38:47Speaker 2: with public schools, and look, Putnam County schools are certainly
- 38:50Speaker 2: not perfect, no school system is, but they do have
- 38:52Speaker 2: a lot of good stuff. There's a lot of good
- 38:54Speaker 2: stuff going on. And traditionally, when you hear these reports
- 38:58Speaker 2: that come out grading, if you will, the school systems
- 39:01Speaker 2: in West Virginia Putnham County generally speaking, depending on which
- 39:04Speaker 2: when you look at ranks among the top schools in
- 39:06Speaker 2: the state, what are you folks doing so well in
- 39:08Speaker 2: Putnham County schools?
- 39:10Speaker 6: Now, Well, it comes.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Down to student performance, and student performance happens because of
- 39:19Speaker 3: great teachers. They have a support system that makes this
- 39:26Speaker 3: makes a successful overall program for the county, and when
- 39:31Speaker 3: everybody buys in, you're going to have success. But it's
- 39:36Speaker 3: more than just test scores. Test scores are very important,
- 39:39Speaker 3: and there's no doubt everyone wants to be at the top.
- 39:45Speaker 3: We're blessed in Putnam County. But it's more than that
- 39:49Speaker 3: if you've got great test scores, but students aren't prepared
- 39:53Speaker 3: for the future, how.
- 39:54Speaker 6: To handle.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Job performance and how to be able to handle constructive criticism,
- 40:01Speaker 3: how to be able to handle people, be good to people,
- 40:05Speaker 3: and have a work ethic which society is sadly missing.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Work ethics got to be improved. And that's in every
- 40:14Speaker 3: sector out there in the business world, whether it's education,
- 40:17Speaker 3: business or whatever. So there's a lot of things that
- 40:22Speaker 3: have been done very, very well here in Putnam County
- 40:26Speaker 3: that's allowed to that success.
- 40:28Speaker 2: You take over for John Hudson, who is going off
- 40:32Speaker 2: into retirement, certainly a well earned retirement. Those are some
- 40:35Speaker 2: pretty big shoes to fill, sir.
- 40:37Speaker 6: Well, you know, it's funny. I was telling someone I kind.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Of know what Kevin de Bore feels like at Alabama
- 40:44Speaker 3: after he took over for Nick save and mister Hudson
- 40:47Speaker 3: has been an outstanding superintendent, a great leader. He's been
- 40:51Speaker 3: great to me, an outstanding person more importantly than superintendent.
- 40:56Speaker 3: And I'm thankful that I've been able.
- 40:59Speaker 6: To work with him. You know, he brought me down here, and.
- 41:05Speaker 3: I'm kind of mad at him because I said, you
- 41:07Speaker 3: got me down here, now you're leaving me.
- 41:09Speaker 6: But I wish him the best. He's a great man and.
- 41:13Speaker 3: He's just been outstanding to work with, and I'm thankful
- 41:17Speaker 3: for the relationship with him, and I do hope he
- 41:22Speaker 3: enjoys this retirement, which I'm sure he will. But it's
- 41:25Speaker 3: big shoes the field, but I'm looking forward to it.
- 41:28Speaker 2: As before we let you go as a longtime educator.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Graduation this week at Putnam County School's poke It tonight,
- 41:34Speaker 2: Winfield tomorrow night, Hurricane Thursday night, and that's all the
- 41:37Speaker 2: Kyle Seeman Convention Center in Charleston, Buffalo, I think is
- 41:40Speaker 2: going to graduate Friday at their school. Any advice for
- 41:43Speaker 2: the class of twenty twenty six from you, sir, as
- 41:44Speaker 2: a longtime educator now superintending, Any advice for these young
- 41:47Speaker 2: men and women.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Well, if you want to be successful we got to
- 41:52Speaker 3: have your priorities inline. It doesn't matter what you're doing,
- 41:55Speaker 3: whether you're going to college, you're going into the workforce immediately,
- 41:59Speaker 3: you're going to the military.
- 42:00Speaker 6: There.
- 42:00Speaker 3: If you don't put God first, it'll all all your
- 42:03Speaker 3: human plans will fail. I think it's important no matter
- 42:06Speaker 3: what we do. You know they have a bright future
- 42:09Speaker 3: ahead of them. They've been prepared very well in Putnham County.
- 42:13Speaker 3: And you know, it boils down that it's nothing fancy
- 42:17Speaker 3: the success formula. It's hard work and you've got to
- 42:21Speaker 3: work hard at whatever you do. You've you've got to
- 42:25Speaker 3: have vision, you have to have a plan, and you've
- 42:30Speaker 3: got to move forward no matter what your age is.
- 42:32Speaker 3: So I wish the best for these students who are
- 42:36Speaker 3: graduating this week, and I think they've got a great
- 42:40Speaker 3: education coming from Putnam County and.
- 42:42Speaker 6: They're going to do great things.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Ris mcgru the new superintendent of Putnham County Schools, I
- 42:46Speaker 2: appreciate you being here being here. Congratulations on the job
- 42:49Speaker 2: and had a great relationship with superintendent the previous Superatimous Rutson.
