- 0:00Speaker 1: Stop with endorsements.
- 0:02Speaker 2: That's a check, and if somebody's able to write you
- 0:05Speaker 2: that check, well then I don't want to check.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'll give you an example. I signed my third contract.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I'm sitting in the room and the owner walks in
- 0:15Speaker 2: and he says, listen, we're gonna make him the highest
- 0:19Speaker 2: paid player in the game.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So they give me fifty million dollars.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Right, They give me twenty up front, and my agent
- 0:28Speaker 2: looked at me and I got up and walked out
- 0:30Speaker 2: of the room, and he was like, what's wrong. Why
- 0:35Speaker 2: are you walking out of the room. I said, because
- 0:38Speaker 2: it finally clear player money no longer impresses me. I
- 0:43Speaker 2: want to know what he does because if he can
- 0:47Speaker 2: pay me this much, then I need.
- 0:51Speaker 1: To learn that show. Someone makes some noise, super Baul
- 0:55Speaker 1: got head.
- 0:56Speaker 3: The sun is out.
- 1:03Speaker 1: My mic work.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Bigo made some noise for the legend Ray Lewis, ladies
- 1:08Speaker 4: and gentlemen, the best ever in this position, one of
- 1:13Speaker 4: the best ever to play the game.
- 1:15Speaker 3: For more importantly, a great man, a great humanitarian.
- 1:19Speaker 1: So thank you for doing this, brother Prero. I appreciate
- 1:23Speaker 1: what you guys are doing.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Absolutely life changing messages and it's just beautiful to know, absolutely.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Absolutely, So I think, you know, obviously people know the
- 1:33Speaker 5: football career enough from the athletic side, obviously the Hall
- 1:36Speaker 5: of Fame, one of the best ever to do it,
- 1:38Speaker 5: but you're doing.
- 1:39Speaker 1: A lot of stuff on the business side. So I
- 1:41Speaker 1: kind of want to start there to back. Let's go
- 1:44Speaker 1: back to nineteen ninety six and when you're getting drafted and.
- 1:47Speaker 5: The gentleman by the name of Ozlemus who played they
- 1:49Speaker 5: played an introvidual obviously bringing.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It to the team, but also mentally do when got
- 1:53Speaker 1: to do off the field.
- 1:54Speaker 6: So talking about the role of the impact that Osny
- 1:56Speaker 6: had on your life, Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 7: It was interesting because first drafted me to Baltimore. I'm
- 2:03Speaker 7: sitting there in the locker and waiting on this phone
- 2:06Speaker 7: call and he calls and says, we're going to draft
- 2:08Speaker 7: you to Baltimore. And I says, I said, Baltimore doesn't
- 2:11Speaker 7: have a.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Team, Like how are you drafting me to Baltimore? You know?
- 2:16Speaker 2: And he's like, nah, you know, we coming from Cleveland.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And I'm like, what all of the teams I could
- 2:20Speaker 2: have been drafted to? I go to freaking Baltimore And
- 2:24Speaker 2: from the first day, man, when he told me, I
- 2:26Speaker 2: was coming in. What he invested into me on the
- 2:30Speaker 2: field was one thing, but the investment that he gave
- 2:34Speaker 2: me off the field was everything. And there was everything
- 2:37Speaker 2: about the front office and understanding how the entire machine
- 2:41Speaker 2: actually runs. And at a very young age, I wanted
- 2:44Speaker 2: to know that because I just didn't want to be
- 2:47Speaker 2: a player on the field, I wanted to be a
- 2:49Speaker 2: player off the field as well. And so Ozzy still
- 2:52Speaker 2: to this day, he just called me a week ago,
- 2:54Speaker 2: I'm talking about some stuff.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So we had that relationship since I was nineteen years old.
- 2:59Speaker 2: And now I'm forty seven years old with that same
- 3:00Speaker 2: relationship with Osn' So I.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Want to talk about some financial stuff that we were
- 3:05Speaker 3: talking over there, and you were saying, have a lot
- 3:08Speaker 3: of guys, you know, obviously make a lot of you know,
- 3:11Speaker 3: poor decisions when it comes to finances. What you know,
- 3:13Speaker 3: talking about taxes and what looks like a forty million
- 3:17Speaker 3: dollar contract really isn't a forty million dollar contract.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Can you can you kind of break that down a
- 3:21Speaker 1: little bit? Yeah, Look, it's really simple.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I think a lot of us look at athletes contracts
- 3:26Speaker 2: and the first thing you look at is the number, right,
- 3:29Speaker 2: But the one thing you don't look at is how
- 3:31Speaker 2: much of that number is gone before you even signed
- 3:33Speaker 2: the check.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Right, that number does not really.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Exist, right, so you say, oh my gosh, this guy
- 3:37Speaker 2: made one hundred million dollars. Absolutely not right. Forty percent
- 3:41Speaker 2: is coming to Uncle Sam or whoever that is that
- 3:43Speaker 2: you're paying your money to immediately. And so what I
- 3:47Speaker 2: started to do, probably in year eight or nine, is
- 3:50Speaker 2: really started to understand.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Why I was not counting my own money.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:56Speaker 1: We hire people to count our money for us.
- 4:00Speaker 2: We hire people to get a to give us monthly
- 4:02Speaker 2: updates right on, oh well you spent this month.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Well, I don't need you to tell me that.
- 4:08Speaker 2: If I see my statements myself, if I know what
- 4:11Speaker 2: every plenty of my money is going, then yeah, I
- 4:15Speaker 2: can do that myself. And so interesting enough, when I
- 4:18Speaker 2: got done planning a partner with a guy recently by
- 4:21Speaker 2: the MEMBA, Julio Gonzales, probably one of the number one
- 4:24Speaker 2: tax guys in the world, and for him to take
- 4:27Speaker 2: me through the entire tax bracket and how they don't
- 4:31Speaker 2: pay taxes. You know, you think about rich, Being rich
- 4:35Speaker 2: is great because you can buy a lot of things.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Being wealthy. You can pass that to the generation, at
- 4:40Speaker 1: the generation, at the generation.
- 4:42Speaker 2: But you have to know it's not about making money,
- 4:45Speaker 2: it's how do you keep money? That's the number one
- 4:48Speaker 2: rule of life. Right, I can people can pay you
- 4:51Speaker 2: see it all the time. People pay athletes all the time,
- 4:53Speaker 2: pay actors all the time. You never get an opportunity
- 4:57Speaker 2: to sit in the rooms where they're talking about own
- 5:00Speaker 2: ownership or partnership. Why because the most important thing is
- 5:04Speaker 2: a relationship. And they don't have a relationships with athletes.
- 5:09Speaker 2: They have a relationships with a number. A number is
- 5:12Speaker 2: fifty two, a number is eighty, a number is thirty two,
- 5:14Speaker 2: A numbers, whatever your number is, that's what they relate to.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Why because that's what makes their money. Right.
- 5:20Speaker 2: But one of the biggest disconnects that all players must understand.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I stopped taking endorsements two thousand and ten, twenty ten.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Why I bought my name back. Why Because I don't
- 5:32Speaker 2: need endorsements right like I want ownership right. I want
- 5:38Speaker 2: partnership right because partnership being dictates and shows me what
- 5:41Speaker 2: a relationship is.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Every hand that I've shook in my professional career, that
- 5:47Speaker 2: hand remembered why I shook their hand, And it was
- 5:50Speaker 2: not because they wrote me a check. It's because I
- 5:53Speaker 2: told them I'll be seeing them again on the other
- 5:55Speaker 2: side of football.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Okay, that's the exciting part for me. Yeah, yes, sir.
- 6:00Speaker 3: So when did that light bulb click for somebody educating you.
- 6:03Speaker 2: On that Yeah, and you have to search for that education.
- 6:07Speaker 2: So one of the greatest educators ever. And regardless of
- 6:11Speaker 2: what anybody thinks, if you don't have a relationship with God,
- 6:15Speaker 2: it's almost impossible to control your life, right, Like, you
- 6:20Speaker 2: have to have someone who's in the forefront of your
- 6:23Speaker 2: life that you actually go to.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So God has been in my life my entire life.
- 6:28Speaker 2: My mom's a pastor and my dad was a pastor
- 6:30Speaker 2: before he passed last year.
- 6:32Speaker 1: So I've always been raised from that core. But that's
- 6:35Speaker 1: the foundation of who you are.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So when you start to look for information and you
- 6:40Speaker 2: start to pray for God to surround you around the
- 6:44Speaker 2: right people. I had the wrong people around me when
- 6:46Speaker 2: I was in my twenties, but by the time I
- 6:49Speaker 2: got in my mid thirties, God was surrounding me around
- 6:52Speaker 2: people that can educate me right, and once I started
- 6:56Speaker 2: to grab that education, that's food.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:58Speaker 2: He says that you would know my people about the
- 7:00Speaker 2: fruit that they bear. So I wanted to know the
- 7:03Speaker 2: fruit that the people was around me. What fruit are you, Barren?
- 7:06Speaker 2: Don't tell me. You can show me how to make money.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I can make money myself, but show me how I
- 7:11Speaker 2: can affect people, right, show me how I can dictate
- 7:15Speaker 2: my next part of my legacy. Making typos is great. Right,
- 7:19Speaker 2: planning the National Football League was one of the most
- 7:21Speaker 2: amazing things ever. Is why because they brought my mother
- 7:24Speaker 2: out of the good right. And so that's where I
- 7:28Speaker 2: think guys have to take a deeper dive if you
- 7:31Speaker 2: really want to change your life, because if you really
- 7:34Speaker 2: believe money is gonna do it, it won't right. It'll
- 7:36Speaker 2: give you ups and mounds. The devil has the same power.
- 7:38Speaker 2: God has the only power he doesn't have. He can't
- 7:41Speaker 2: save your life, but he can give you everything that
- 7:46Speaker 2: this world offers, and most of it is fans, most
- 7:49Speaker 2: of it is shiny, and most of it spins right.
- 7:53Speaker 2: God gives you things that does the opposite, and all
- 7:56Speaker 2: lords people say, hey, man, so you told about in
- 8:00Speaker 2: your twenties and you know being here this week super
- 8:03Speaker 2: Bowl week, it's been kind of a common.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Theme amongst some of the players is that yet early
- 8:09Speaker 6: on in their career, they didn't have the people around them,
- 8:11Speaker 6: they didn't have the education, and a lot of it
- 8:14Speaker 6: is because they didn't care to know, because they were
- 8:16Speaker 6: taking recommendations from people.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's the setup, it's what happens.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And when you're seventeen years old, When you're seventeen years old,
- 8:24Speaker 2: this agent walks up to you.
- 8:26Speaker 1: He says, don't mention my name again, but I want
- 8:28Speaker 1: to be your agent.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And you, because you're broke and you have absolutely nothing,
- 8:32Speaker 2: you say, wow, okay, I'll stay in touch with you.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And while you stand in touch with him, he then
- 8:38Speaker 2: follows your career and wait till you get into your
- 8:40Speaker 2: junior senior year, my junior year, you know.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And then there was there was times.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Right, there's a nil deal now out there, So who
- 8:47Speaker 2: cares about what I tell now?
- 8:49Speaker 1: Right?
- 8:49Speaker 6: But statue limitations they have been fired express.
- 8:55Speaker 2: But when you take my you take what I was
- 8:57Speaker 2: doing in nineteen ninety four, bro nineteen ninety four is
- 9:00Speaker 2: what they're letting kids do now.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I was saying, why can't you be paid? Right?
- 9:04Speaker 2: That's you cannot tell me if somebody wants to help
- 9:07Speaker 2: me out because of what I do why can't you
- 9:10Speaker 2: allow that? So when that started to being allowed in
- 9:13Speaker 2: nineteen ninety four, man, listen, bro bags bags being dropped off,
- 9:19Speaker 2: Bro like double bag boy, ruffle bags, Like, you're not
- 9:23Speaker 2: talking to me unless I have a bag dropped off.
- 9:28Speaker 2: So then, but it's a system, right because a friend
- 9:31Speaker 2: forget the friend. The friend says, hey, ray, I got
- 9:34Speaker 2: this person, I got this person, I got a lawyer,
- 9:37Speaker 2: I got an agent, I got bro And you're like,
- 9:39Speaker 2: before you know it, you don't trust it somebody that
- 9:42Speaker 2: you have not built a relationship with, and you just
- 9:45Speaker 2: give them your whole check, I mean you right over
- 9:47Speaker 2: then entire check and you've never sat with them or
- 9:51Speaker 2: have dinner with them, and then in your life. And
- 9:54Speaker 2: that's the system of how our kids are taught on
- 9:58Speaker 2: how to go into the National Football League NBA all
- 10:00Speaker 2: these different things and trust people that have not put
- 10:04Speaker 2: no sweat equity into who we are. Right, it's criminal
- 10:08Speaker 2: right to a certain person to a certain point, and.
- 10:11Speaker 1: So I wanted to change that, which I did. So.
- 10:14Speaker 3: So you mentioned in a nil. How do you feel
- 10:18Speaker 3: about nil? I think it's the nil deal was supposed
- 10:23Speaker 3: to be different, right? What does that mean? These major
- 10:28Speaker 3: colleges have endowment funds.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Right, the universe of minment has an endowment fund almost
- 10:34Speaker 2: forty billion dollars or more. Those kids are supposed to
- 10:37Speaker 2: eat from that fund. They're not supposed to eat from outside. Now,
- 10:43Speaker 2: once you let people from outside come in, then that's
- 10:45Speaker 2: where the division of the locker room starts. Why because
- 10:49Speaker 2: you pay a quarterback a million dollars, but you paid
- 10:52Speaker 2: the lineman nothing but the quarterback came through the ball
- 10:55Speaker 2: un less than linement blocking. Right, So all of the
- 10:58Speaker 2: way it was supposed to be this. When I was
- 11:00Speaker 2: arguing the issue, I was saying, listen, if my number
- 11:04Speaker 2: fifty two makes a certain dollar amount, then I should
- 11:07Speaker 2: eat from that. Why should I eat from my money
- 11:11Speaker 2: from my name that I make? You you cannot make
- 11:13Speaker 2: money off my name.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:15Speaker 2: There's no Fortune five hundred company in America that you
- 11:18Speaker 2: can use their brand.
- 11:20Speaker 1: You cannot use the NFL logo by yourself.
- 11:23Speaker 2: You wear a shirt and you advertise that they gonna
- 11:26Speaker 2: want a percentage of that, Well, then my name should
- 11:28Speaker 2: represent the same thing, and every athlete should represent that
- 11:31Speaker 2: exact same thing, which it doesn't, right because the NFLPA
- 11:35Speaker 2: we're up under this brand, right, I made over Jesus
- 11:39Speaker 2: my Jersey from two thousand and five to two thousand
- 11:41Speaker 2: and eight.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Bro, listen, hundreds of millions of dollars.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I have it, You have it, and you and think
- 11:48Speaker 2: about a two hundred and fifty dollars jersey and I
- 11:52Speaker 2: got a five thousand dollars check. Sum's off with that math.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Sum's off of that math. But it's the same thing
- 11:59Speaker 2: with the nil dealing. Pay the kids from where they
- 12:02Speaker 2: make the money. Don't let outside endorsers come in once again,
- 12:07Speaker 2: the endorsement model, because that takes the that's that takes.
- 12:10Speaker 1: The attention off of them.
- 12:12Speaker 2: The endorsement model is not the way to go, man,
- 12:13Speaker 2: And I'm telling you it's gonna it's gonna continue to
- 12:16Speaker 2: divide our children.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Just like the portal.
- 12:20Speaker 2: The portal is cool, but the portal takes the leash
- 12:25Speaker 2: off what greatness really is.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Man's greatness hurts.
- 12:30Speaker 2: That's a lot of down days that you got to
- 12:32Speaker 2: go through to find out what greatness is. And now
- 12:35Speaker 2: kids are in the portal and they can run away
- 12:37Speaker 2: from that so quickly they disagree with the coach. I'm
- 12:40Speaker 2: transferring this year. You know, I got four sons. I
- 12:43Speaker 2: got four kings. I got two queens, and I went
- 12:45Speaker 2: through that whole battle. And I'm sitting there sad son
- 12:48Speaker 2: earn a job. I was never given a job. I
- 12:52Speaker 2: had to take a job, you know. And so a
- 12:54Speaker 2: lot of these things that they're creating, I think it's
- 12:56Speaker 2: taking the issue off what the real issue is, Like,
- 13:00Speaker 2: our kids should be paid, but they should be compensated
- 13:03Speaker 2: from where the money sits, and that's in this endowment funds.
- 13:07Speaker 1: That's an absolute fact. Man. I've not even thought about that,
- 13:09Speaker 1: the endowments of the schools.
- 13:10Speaker 6: But you said endorsements aren't the way, and so it
- 13:13Speaker 6: makes me wonder at that point, you're getting a salary
- 13:15Speaker 6: from the NFL, but you're not doing endorsements. We all,
- 13:18Speaker 6: you know, we preach having one income.
- 13:20Speaker 1: It's too close to none.
- 13:21Speaker 6: What other type of alternatives that you seek to find
- 13:25Speaker 6: a way to make money off the field? Partnerships? Okay, partnerships.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Right, everybody wants to shake your hand and they want
- 13:34Speaker 2: to make you the greatest thing ever. Right, Oh my gosh,
- 13:37Speaker 2: come do this, come speak here, come do that. I
- 13:40Speaker 2: will if I own part of that. Because of my
- 13:44Speaker 2: own part of that, then I got ownership in that
- 13:47Speaker 2: and if I got ownership and that, then I speak
- 13:49Speaker 2: about it a little more boldly, right, little more fast.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I have a little more energy of getting up every
- 13:54Speaker 2: morning to come do what you want me to do.
- 13:57Speaker 2: No matter how much you own, right, think about owned
- 14:01Speaker 2: hundred percent of nothing, that's nothing. But if you got
- 14:05Speaker 2: your hands and enough things that I got my hands in, man,
- 14:07Speaker 2: I got percentage of this.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I got twenty eight thirty thirty plus companies.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Man that my hands is in that I own or partner,
- 14:19Speaker 2: which means I have a relationship with them. If I
- 14:23Speaker 2: can teach my kids stop with endorsements.
- 14:27Speaker 1: That's a check.
- 14:29Speaker 2: And if somebody's able to write you that check, well
- 14:31Speaker 2: then I don't want to check. I'll give you example.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I signed my third contract. I'm sitting in the room
- 14:38Speaker 2: and the owner walks in and he says, listen, we're
- 14:43Speaker 2: gonna make him the highest paid player in the game.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So they give me fifty million dollars, right, they give
- 14:49Speaker 2: me twenty up front.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And my agent looked at me, and I got up.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And walked out of the room, and he was like,
- 14:58Speaker 2: what's wrong.
- 15:00Speaker 1: How are you walking out of the room.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I said, because it finally cleared player money. No longer
- 15:06Speaker 2: impresses me. I want to know what he does because
- 15:12Speaker 2: if he can pay me this much, then I need
- 15:16Speaker 2: to learn that business.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Right, So athletes think about this.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Athletes are never introduced to the owner concept until you
- 15:28Speaker 2: make enough money because they tell you I'll put you
- 15:32Speaker 2: in the next slot. Right, every athlete is slotted. So
- 15:35Speaker 2: whether you think an agent is relevant or not, every
- 15:38Speaker 2: athlete the number is already marked. So when you come
- 15:41Speaker 2: to that number, you're like, I want a few more million.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I want a few hundred thousand more maybe, but you're slotted.
- 15:48Speaker 2: So they always make us think about the player. And
- 15:51Speaker 2: then I wanted to know what an owner thinks like.
- 15:55Speaker 2: So then I started to sitting myself around owners and
- 15:58Speaker 2: I started to say, why that's a different conversation than
- 16:01Speaker 2: I have in the locker room full of players. They
- 16:04Speaker 2: don't even think about ownership. They don't even think about
- 16:07Speaker 2: owning their IP at all. The only thing they think
- 16:11Speaker 2: about is the next check. When you become a boss,
- 16:15Speaker 2: you don't think about your next check.
- 16:17Speaker 3: You right, the checks. That's the difference. Absolutely, that's the ball.
- 16:23Speaker 3: So ownership. Staying on the ownership theme the NFL, I
- 16:28Speaker 3: think it's like maybe sixty five percent of black players
- 16:31Speaker 3: make up the NFL, so seventy three seventy three, Okay,
- 16:35Speaker 3: no black ownership. So there's the Rooney rule to try to,
- 16:40Speaker 3: you know, have more black head coaches, which a lot
- 16:44Speaker 3: of people think that that's flawed, but at least they
- 16:46Speaker 3: have something in place. What are your thoughts on having
- 16:50Speaker 3: the majority of the league be black players, have no
- 16:53Speaker 3: black ownership and how can we get it to the
- 16:56Speaker 3: point where there is representation in the owner's box.
- 17:00Speaker 2: We own and we control sports, right, Blacks dominate that
- 17:06Speaker 2: from an NFL level. But you're not changing that unless
- 17:11Speaker 2: you're sitting in the ownership rooms. So we can argue
- 17:15Speaker 2: all we want to about not having black coaches, but
- 17:19Speaker 2: until we get a black owner in that office or two,
- 17:24Speaker 2: then that ain't changing.
- 17:26Speaker 1: No matter what rule you want to talk about.
- 17:29Speaker 2: This is what I'm saying, like, we only look for
- 17:31Speaker 2: the check, We only look for the position that's given.
- 17:36Speaker 2: In today's time, it's time for us to take that.
- 17:39Speaker 2: That's what partnerships and ownership is, right. My goal is simple.
- 17:44Speaker 2: My goal has never changed. I'm forty seven years old.
- 17:46Speaker 2: In the next five to seven years, my goal is
- 17:48Speaker 2: to put myself in the right position to possibly become
- 17:52Speaker 2: the first black minority owner International Football League.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Why because I want to change the narrative.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Right, If we don't do that, If we don't do that,
- 18:02Speaker 2: then no conversation changes.
- 18:04Speaker 6: Why do you think that hasn't happened. It's simple because
- 18:07Speaker 6: I'm thinking about this. Seventy three percent of you right
- 18:10Speaker 6: control the league. We got some of the greatest players
- 18:12Speaker 6: that's ever played this game, multi millionaires. How come there's
- 18:16Speaker 6: never been Oh, maybe there has been a conversation to
- 18:18Speaker 6: come together as a group to become more of the minority,
- 18:21Speaker 6: or become the investment group behind the ownership of a team.
- 18:26Speaker 2: If the attraction from little league to college, from little
- 18:32Speaker 2: league to high school to college to the National and
- 18:35Speaker 2: Football League, the attraction is to make a check. The
- 18:41Speaker 2: attraction is to get out the hood. The attraction has
- 18:45Speaker 2: never been how do you become owner? Nobody teaches that,
- 18:51Speaker 2: and let's just sitting in that room to listen what
- 18:55Speaker 2: owners are discussing. So luckily in my career I was
- 19:00Speaker 2: able to start sitting in those rooms. Yeah, to sit
- 19:05Speaker 2: there and listen what they're talking about. And I said,
- 19:08Speaker 2: and I started to say it, I said, man, they
- 19:10Speaker 2: was like, Oh my gosh, this much player signed for
- 19:12Speaker 2: this much money. I said, that does not impress me.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Do you know the person who's writing a check, That's
- 19:18Speaker 2: what I'm chasing. And so until that dynamic starts to
- 19:23Speaker 2: really change and we have enough of us who understands
- 19:27Speaker 2: our true power is what we can do together. But
- 19:31Speaker 2: the individual individual check is written, and then so this
- 19:34Speaker 2: person gonna I gotta take my money.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I gotta take my money. I gotta take my money.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I gotta take my money.
- 19:38Speaker 2: And it's great, you can take your money, but the
- 19:40Speaker 2: generations after that, it's still the same model. I just
- 19:45Speaker 2: think the model can only change if we're sitting in
- 19:49Speaker 2: those owners' meetings.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Hees what I'm saying. There's a lot of investment.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You asked me about coaching, right, There's a lot of
- 19:56Speaker 2: investment that goes into coaching.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:58Speaker 2: There's a lot of investing to go from coach to
- 20:00Speaker 2: the GMS, right GM to the owner.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Those are steps and you have to be invested to
- 20:06Speaker 1: do that. But you also have to have the education to.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Understand all of the aspects of the game and not
- 20:14Speaker 2: just playing the game.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:16Speaker 2: When you get in the front office, you're not only
- 20:18Speaker 2: just counting people checks. Right, you're talking about everything that
- 20:23Speaker 2: walks in that building, right, tomorrow's game.
- 20:26Speaker 1: The only thing we see is a game.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Man, that's a zillion dollar business, right, with intricate parts
- 20:36Speaker 2: that everybody has to be in control of. And so
- 20:40Speaker 2: that's why I'm telling you, like, until you start to
- 20:42Speaker 2: sit down and study that world, it's and that's one vertical.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Go to the MLB, go to the NBA, NHL, same model.
- 20:54Speaker 2: A bunch of owners got together, put a pool together,
- 20:57Speaker 2: Let's make this money, let's build this That's what they do, right.
- 21:01Speaker 1: So we have the ability, but.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Because of the checks being so current, it never causes
- 21:10Speaker 2: our mind to become owner.
- 21:12Speaker 1: We're okay with being a player.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So I started to make a transition halfway through my career.
- 21:18Speaker 3: So when you you were fortunate enough to be in
- 21:21Speaker 3: those owners' meetings, what's some of the things that you
- 21:23Speaker 3: learn from just sitting and listening to the conversations.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Man, nothing matters to them but what each one of
- 21:29Speaker 2: them think seriously like And that's what I respect about
- 21:34Speaker 2: that needing. It's like, that's why I go back to
- 21:37Speaker 2: talking about partnership. Partnerships in life, it's only based off
- 21:41Speaker 2: one thing. Relationships.
- 21:44Speaker 1: That's it. Bro who you do, partner, who you partner with,
- 21:47Speaker 1: that's a relationship.
- 21:49Speaker 2: And that's what I respect so much about the relationships
- 21:54Speaker 2: that they have in that circle of power.
- 21:57Speaker 1: That they have. That's why they signed deals together. That's
- 22:03Speaker 1: why they broke the TV deals together.
- 22:05Speaker 2: You know, it's like it's a genius concept, right, but
- 22:09Speaker 2: how many of us will really come together and break
- 22:13Speaker 2: that concept.
- 22:13Speaker 3: You said something that was very insightful. You said that
- 22:15Speaker 3: they only care about what each other think.
- 22:18Speaker 1: That's it that you don't.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You don't care about what somebody else show does, you
- 22:24Speaker 2: work your show, you call your guy.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Or you don't care about just what yourself thinks. You
- 22:30Speaker 1: got to give a mince no, you what The overall
- 22:35Speaker 1: theme is, we have a machine.
- 22:37Speaker 2: The machine must run, right, Players careers three years, three
- 22:43Speaker 2: and a half years, and the next one come in,
- 22:46Speaker 2: and the next one come in, and the next one
- 22:48Speaker 2: come in. It's a revolving do in all the sports,
- 22:51Speaker 2: all the sports has ran exactly like this. That's why
- 22:54Speaker 2: the next thing, the next only the most important person
- 22:59Speaker 2: and an athlete life in the owners perspective, is the
- 23:02Speaker 2: next one.
- 23:05Speaker 1: That's crazy. It's on the way they work. Nobody's bigger
- 23:09Speaker 1: in the progress. It's the only way.
- 23:10Speaker 2: It's the only way that works. Bro, there's nobody bigger
- 23:13Speaker 2: than the bigger than the machine.
- 23:15Speaker 6: You reference the fact that I asked you about coaching,
- 23:18Speaker 6: but the answer I got, I think we should elaborate
- 23:20Speaker 6: on there. With the power impact and it's something that
- 23:22Speaker 6: I had to experience working in education and realize I
- 23:25Speaker 6: can effect the school, but I could affect the world
- 23:29Speaker 6: doing something different.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Talk about why you haven't chosen the coach because of
- 23:33Speaker 1: the power of impact.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the coaching side is it's attractive, right,
- 23:38Speaker 2: because I've been into my entire life. I've been playing,
- 23:41Speaker 2: I've been coaching, I've been mentored, I've been.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Doing a lot of those things.
- 23:45Speaker 2: But with the impact that I'm trying to make, I
- 23:49Speaker 2: just want to hear the Lord when I finally go
- 23:52Speaker 2: home say well done, my good and faithful certain I
- 23:55Speaker 2: don't think that's just going to come from me being
- 23:57Speaker 2: a great football player. I think that's gonna come from
- 24:01Speaker 2: me making an impact on people and being a light
- 24:06Speaker 2: amongst people to show them the way. God says many
- 24:10Speaker 2: a call, but few are chosen. Sending a question I
- 24:13Speaker 2: got this how do you become a part of the few?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Right, That's a real question, right.
- 24:19Speaker 2: And so coaching is great, and I'm forty seven, so
- 24:22Speaker 2: maybe I'll coach at fifty five. But with what I'm
- 24:25Speaker 2: doing with each one of my companies, one of my
- 24:27Speaker 2: ventures being fifty two ventures Prosperity Reimagined, is how do
- 24:31Speaker 2: we go into these communities and how do we change
- 24:33Speaker 2: the look of those communities? All this money that they
- 24:36Speaker 2: keep saying, we're giving this much money to black communities,
- 24:39Speaker 2: I have not seen one black community change so fact,
- 24:44Speaker 2: and I mean real change, right. So that for me,
- 24:48Speaker 2: I've sat down studied them twenty plus years. I've been
- 24:51Speaker 2: in the hoods, I've been in the presence. I'm walking around,
- 24:54Speaker 2: I'm trying to figure it out. And every time I
- 24:56Speaker 2: see Martin Luther King Street, I'm saying, why is Martin
- 24:59Speaker 2: Luther King Street in the most dysfunctional place in the city?
- 25:03Speaker 7: Right?
- 25:04Speaker 1: That has to change.
- 25:05Speaker 2: So that's why I think my focus and what I'm
- 25:08Speaker 2: focusing on now is much bigger. So if I want
- 25:10Speaker 2: to come back to coach, and I will, I just
- 25:13Speaker 2: don't think right.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Now is the time. Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 3: So we always hear hard stories of athletes getting taken
- 25:18Speaker 3: advantage of from financial advisors, from accountants, from lawyers, everyone.
- 25:23Speaker 3: How what is the process to actually be able to
- 25:26Speaker 3: trust somebody and what should you never do to kind
- 25:31Speaker 3: of safeguard yourself from being taken advantage of?
- 25:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you should always have three layers, right,
- 25:37Speaker 2: you share your spiritual foundation, your family foundation, and then
- 25:41Speaker 2: your business foundation, and all three of those layers, we
- 25:44Speaker 2: must have somebody at every level right to spiritually guide you. Family,
- 25:49Speaker 2: somebody you trust, and then business is somebody who has
- 25:52Speaker 2: to answer to your family and your spiritual guidance, right,
- 25:55Speaker 2: because once they have to answer to them. The problem
- 25:58Speaker 2: is we do an opposite, right, talent opens the door,
- 26:02Speaker 2: We go in and we sign a check. As soon
- 26:04Speaker 2: as we signed the check, the first thing we do
- 26:05Speaker 2: is sign it over to an agent that we just
- 26:07Speaker 2: met two weeks ago, who then passes to his financial team,
- 26:11Speaker 2: and then they start deshriving your money and you never
- 26:14Speaker 2: see your money ever again.
- 26:17Speaker 1: So we have to check. But it's the model.
- 26:22Speaker 2: It's the model, right, and every almost every person goes
- 26:26Speaker 2: down that same model.
- 26:27Speaker 1: If you don't change that model.
- 26:29Speaker 2: About one of the things I started doing with my
- 26:33Speaker 2: financial visor, right, I said every penny, every penny that
- 26:39Speaker 2: leaves or comes into my account, I should be alerted
- 26:43Speaker 2: every penny, right, And what does that mean? I should
- 26:46Speaker 2: have the same access you have. You should not have
- 26:48Speaker 2: to call me in two weeks to report on my money. No,
- 26:52Speaker 2: I should be reporting to you what I want to
- 26:54Speaker 2: do with my money. But that's taking ownership, right. It's
- 26:57Speaker 2: back the ownership, and it's back the partnership. A great
- 27:00Speaker 2: partnership with my financial teams, and I have ownership of
- 27:04Speaker 2: all of my entire world.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And that's why I like to say it.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I got spiritual guidance, I got family guidance with my
- 27:09Speaker 2: mom and what she does. And then I have business
- 27:12Speaker 2: teams that actually oversee each other and making sure that
- 27:16Speaker 2: I am.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Not being hustled, which I have. I've been down that road, bro,
- 27:19Speaker 1: millions of dollars. Come on, man, why do you want
- 27:21Speaker 1: to talk about it? Bruh, talk about it.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I'm still looking for the people with knowledge, easy, easy
- 27:27Speaker 2: statute of limitations may not have this fire. No, it's
- 27:32Speaker 2: crazy because you trust people, maam, and you trust people
- 27:35Speaker 2: and you trust them to do what's best for you,
- 27:40Speaker 2: and then you realize that that person equally yoked. That
- 27:46Speaker 2: person has no guide in their life, and all the
- 27:48Speaker 2: thing you trust is well, I've been in financial for
- 27:52Speaker 2: fifteen years, twenty years, okay, and now that I'm on
- 27:56Speaker 2: this side of life, I'm able to say and right, Nah,
- 27:59Speaker 2: you got to ask those questions. The easiest thing to
- 28:02Speaker 2: do is give somebody a check. The hardest thing to
- 28:05Speaker 2: do is ask questions that you don't know that they don't.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Know how to tell you. It's the hardest thing to do.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Yeah, let's talk about the work, right, because I can
- 28:12Speaker 6: hear the passion in you. I could imagine you coming
- 28:15Speaker 6: into a community. There's going to be a presence that
- 28:17Speaker 6: you feel. So let's talk about fifty two foundations and
- 28:20Speaker 6: the work that y'all are doing because it's incredible, right,
- 28:23Speaker 6: giving economic.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Consistence to the youth.
- 28:25Speaker 6: Talk about the obviously the goal of it, the start
- 28:29Speaker 6: of it, and how everything is being functioned inside of it.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yeah, one of them.
- 28:33Speaker 2: One of my other companies started in twenty fifteen in
- 28:37Speaker 2: Baltimore after the unrest of Freddie Gray, right, and at
- 28:41Speaker 2: that time, I started a solar company at the time,
- 28:45Speaker 2: and why because I started walking the streets and the
- 28:47Speaker 2: streets of Baltimore was burning and everybody was just frustrated.
- 28:51Speaker 2: And you know, Baltimore, it's beautiful, but it has a
- 28:55Speaker 2: bad black eye content to it. And so my company
- 28:59Speaker 2: started in two thousand and fifteen, and now, man Jesus,
- 29:02Speaker 2: I think we just had our twenty four to twenty
- 29:04Speaker 2: fifth graduation right to where now we took hundreds of
- 29:08Speaker 2: game members off the streets and we've given them options. Right,
- 29:11Speaker 2: We've given them an alternative because they're not going to
- 29:14Speaker 2: work for a four or five dollars job. But if
- 29:16Speaker 2: you teach them a solo job, right, which then leads
- 29:19Speaker 2: into construction, which then leaves them leaving their block that
- 29:22Speaker 2: they're fighting for and leave the freaking state to go
- 29:25Speaker 2: work another job somewhere else, right, And so now you
- 29:29Speaker 2: give them And so the greatest ability to see that
- 29:32Speaker 2: is walk up to those graduations and listen to a
- 29:35Speaker 2: mother saying he gave up drug life and you saved
- 29:39Speaker 2: my son's life.
- 29:40Speaker 1: It's the greatest reward you ever get in business.
- 29:43Speaker 2: And so that's why with powerful the two foundation is
- 29:47Speaker 2: it's remarkable because it gives somebody a fresh breath of
- 29:52Speaker 2: that maybe I've made a mistake, but I can pick
- 29:55Speaker 2: myself up and I can keep going.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And that's what we do. Right.
- 29:58Speaker 2: So whether it's second and third chance of finding whoever
- 30:00Speaker 2: that may come in there, we give you second and
- 30:02Speaker 2: third chances, we give you fourth chances, we give you
- 30:05Speaker 2: fifth chances. Right, we have an eighty five percent placement rate.
- 30:08Speaker 2: The moment you leave our school, you get hired immediately.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Right. If we don't start there.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Right, Another one of my partners we own We own
- 30:16Speaker 2: these waste managements in Baltimore. Another huge project from an
- 30:22Speaker 2: academy standpoint is in Genevo, Ohio called Spire Institute. Same
- 30:28Speaker 2: concept as IMG, but what we're doing inside of that
- 30:32Speaker 2: academy is we're teaching children how to actually function in
- 30:36Speaker 2: a very dysfunctioned culture.
- 30:38Speaker 1: How do you do that? Right? That's why man the
- 30:40Speaker 1: kem Bae Mtumbo finally partners. So now we have a.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Relationship with Africa, with NBA Africa coming through Spire.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Right with to Awakens, we can take kids who's.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Living in poverty and then put them at an eight
- 30:52Speaker 2: hundred and fifty thousand square floor building and feed them
- 30:55Speaker 2: every day and change their culture and change what they see.
- 30:59Speaker 2: A lot of people focus on ROI return of investment
- 31:02Speaker 2: return of investment, return of investment. But if you think
- 31:05Speaker 2: about the communities that I live in, return of investment
- 31:08Speaker 2: is not the hot topic. The hot topic should be
- 31:10Speaker 2: what we created, which is IOWA imagination, opportunity access, right,
- 31:17Speaker 2: clap it up for that, Yeah, that'd be bothered.
- 31:20Speaker 1: So yeah, let me ask you this.
- 31:23Speaker 3: You're in media, and that's something that a lot of athletes. Uh,
- 31:29Speaker 3: it's very hot right now, right, and everybody when they retire,
- 31:31Speaker 3: they want to become a broadcaster, but very few people
- 31:33Speaker 3: are actually able to be successful that in that space.
- 31:39Speaker 3: So talk about how your transition and media happened and
- 31:44Speaker 3: how you were able to, you know, become successful in
- 31:47Speaker 3: another leg of your career. And like I said, that's
- 31:50Speaker 3: actually probably harder to be successful in TV than it
- 31:53Speaker 3: is on the field.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:57Speaker 2: People ask me all these questions every day, just every day,
- 32:01Speaker 2: like how can I do this? How can I get
- 32:03Speaker 2: bettering this? And I was like, and I was talking
- 32:05Speaker 2: to my team and I was like, man, you know,
- 32:08Speaker 2: the podcast is great and I'm doing this and I
- 32:10Speaker 2: got this going, but I got to go a little
- 32:13Speaker 2: bit deeper, right, So I was like, you know what,
- 32:17Speaker 2: every Friday, We're going to do fifty two Fridays because
- 32:20Speaker 2: this ironic year twenty twenty three days actually fifty two Fridays,
- 32:25Speaker 2: and this year and inside of these fifty two Fridays,
- 32:28Speaker 2: there will be a principle that you have to not
- 32:31Speaker 2: listen to, but you have to apply. And that principle
- 32:35Speaker 2: carries you to the next week until you get to
- 32:37Speaker 2: the next Friday. But by the time you get to
- 32:40Speaker 2: fifty two Fridays, you will have fifty two principles and
- 32:43Speaker 2: the only thing that fails is your application of them.
- 32:47Speaker 2: That's it, right, because the principles will never change, it's
- 32:52Speaker 2: but you have to apply them right. And so that's
- 32:54Speaker 2: what fifty two Fridays was kind of birthed from, like
- 32:57Speaker 2: really sharing with watching the podcast grow it with the
- 33:01Speaker 2: way it grew, and then realizing like people are hearing it,
- 33:05Speaker 2: but how many people are applying that. So fifty two
- 33:09Speaker 2: Friday says, now apply information, apply that and now when
- 33:12Speaker 2: you apply it, I need you to send that back
- 33:14Speaker 2: to me. Show me your application, right, And so now
- 33:18Speaker 2: all of these fans and stuff are sending information back.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I'm off work, but I'm in the I'm in I'm
- 33:25Speaker 2: in my dungeon. At one and two o'clock in the morning. Right,
- 33:28Speaker 2: I said, I wasn't gonna eat this, so now I'm
- 33:30Speaker 2: working out right. So it's it's really crazy, man, when
- 33:33Speaker 2: you see how much traffic comes in of just people
- 33:36Speaker 2: just collaborating.
- 33:37Speaker 1: You know. Awesome question.
- 33:39Speaker 3: So football, we were talking offline ESPN thirty for thirty.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Oh wait they said that.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Well, we talked about if you guys were the greatest
- 33:50Speaker 3: defense ever. So you know, some people say the Bears,
- 33:58Speaker 3: who said, that's a Chicago guy.
- 34:04Speaker 2: You see, you saw the Bears era. So I'm gonna
- 34:06Speaker 2: respect that. I'm gonna respect that.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Go ahead, But you you gave a very convincing argument
- 34:11Speaker 3: why you guys had the best defense. Can you talk
- 34:13Speaker 3: about why you think you have the best defense ever?
- 34:15Speaker 1: I want, I'm gonna take think out of it. You
- 34:17Speaker 1: take think out of while you know you're the best defense. Yeah.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Look look, look, I'm I'm gonna leave it to you
- 34:23Speaker 2: like this. Right, the game is based off numbers. It'll
- 34:27Speaker 2: never changed. Right, what that defense done in that year
- 34:33Speaker 2: will never be repeated ever again. Right, we gave her,
- 34:37Speaker 2: We gave up. This is in one game, running back
- 34:41Speaker 2: to running for two hundred yards three hundred yards teams
- 34:43Speaker 2: are running for four hundred yards. Right that entire year,
- 34:47Speaker 2: we gave up nine hundred and sixty yards total. We
