- 0:00Is there one thing you can do that will make everything else
- 0:03better? More than anything else, great
- 0:05achievement is almost always the result of sustained narrow
- 0:10focus. With discipline and sustained
- 0:15effort, you can master one thing over time, but you can't become
- 0:19a master of many things because of opportunity cost.
- 0:23Rather than trying to do everything, it is far better to
- 0:27learn how to do the most important thing, the one thing,
- 0:32while the one thing enhances everything else.
- 0:36Focus on anything else diminishes everything else.
- 0:42What is that one thing? Is there something you can do
- 1:03that will make everything else better that can also be done
- 1:07while doing everything else and not at the exclusion of
- 1:10everything else? And if so, what is that one
- 1:15thing? Hello, my name is Larry
- 1:19Corbridge and this is episode 14 of the Stand Forever series.
- 1:25In past episodes, we concluded the supreme expression of
- 1:31intelligence. The crowning achievement of
- 1:33every rational being is to choose best, and the best
- 1:39choices are to perceive the gifts of God's Son, his Spirit
- 1:45and his life, and then help others do the same.
- 1:49In the last episode, we considered the gift of God's
- 1:53Son. The focus of this episode is the
- 1:58gift of God's Spirit, President Russell M Nelson has said.
- 2:05The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our
- 2:10lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.
- 2:17Great achievement is almost always the result of sustained
- 2:22narrow focus. The narrower and the more
- 2:26sustained the focus over the longer period of time, the
- 2:29greater the outcome. You get better at things you
- 2:33keep on doing. Michael Phelps, for example,
- 2:36holds the record for Olympic gold medals with an astounding
- 2:40total of 28. From age 14 and throughout his
- 2:45athletic career, he trained in water, several hours a day,
- 2:50seven days a week, 365 days a year.
- 2:55Look behind great achievement in the arts, sports, science,
- 3:01technology and business and you will find a narrow focus
- 3:06sustained over a long time. With discipline and sustained
- 3:12effort, you can master one thing over time and maybe learn to do
- 3:16a few things well. But you can't become a master of
- 3:21many things because of opportunity cost.
- 3:25When one option is chosen among alternatives, the opportunity
- 3:30cost is the loss of the potential gain from all the
- 3:34alternatives that are not chosen, the benefits foregone by
- 3:40choosing 1 alternative over all everything else.
- 3:46Rather than trying to do everything, it is far better to
- 3:49learn how to do the most important thing, the one thing.
- 3:55This stern reality is rooted in the premise that we can only do
- 3:59one thing at a time. Talents, energy, resources, and
- 4:04time are limited. A dollar spent on one thing is a
- 4:09dollar not spent on everything else.
- 4:11An hour swimming, watching television, playing a video
- 4:15game, playing basketball, playing the piano, working,
- 4:19building a business, serving others, or studying scripture is
- 4:23at the expense of everything else that could have been done
- 4:27with that same time and energy. When you say yes to one thing,
- 4:32you say no to everything else. Consequently, Ludwig Van
- 4:37Beethoven was probably not a great swimmer and Michael Phelps
- 4:42is probably not a great composer.
- 4:46An Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto, is credited with the
- 4:52idea that generally a minority of causes lead to a majority of
- 4:58results. He quantified the idea,
- 5:01asserting that 80% of the results in most endeavors are
- 5:06produced from 20% of the causes. That assertion is known as the
- 5:12Pareto principle. In light of opportunity costs,
- 5:18focus your efforts somewhere within the 20%.
- 5:22The most effective things, systemic things that will
- 5:26enhance everything else. Physical exercise, for example,
- 5:31has a multiplier effect, benefiting mind and spirit as
- 5:35well as body. Having dinner regularly with
- 5:40family not only provides nourishment but also gives rise
- 5:43to a sense of security and strengthens love, understanding,
- 5:49communication and relationships around the table.
- 5:54Given you can only do one thing at a time, you need to be
- 5:59selective in what you do. Take care where you focus
- 6:05carefully. Choose your passion.
- 6:09The experts on this subject ask the question, is there one thing
- 6:14you can do that will make everything else better?
- 6:16More than anything else, they say, figure out what that is and
- 6:21make that your focus for each facet of life, physical health,
- 6:26spiritual, personal, family, work, and so on.
- 6:32There is, however, I think a much better question, and that
- 6:37is this is there something that will make, yes, everything else
- 6:41better, but they can be done not at the exclusion of everything
- 6:48else, rather while doing everything else?
- 6:52That's the critical question. And the answer is yes, there is
- 6:59one thing that can be done, not at the expense of everything
- 7:05else, but while doing everything else that will also enhance,
- 7:09instruct and make everything else better.
- 7:13And it is in fact, the most important thing of all to
- 7:17discover that one thing. We ask another question.
- 7:22What? What has the Lord said we should
- 7:25always do? The answer to that question will
- 7:30reveal the one thing. Here are some of the answers.
- 7:35Thou shalt do all that thou doest in the name of the Son.
- 7:40And in that day the Holy Ghost fell upon Adam.
- 7:46Another Scripture. Treasure up in your minds
- 7:49continually the words of life, and it shall be given you in the
- 7:54very hour that portion that shall be meted out unto every
- 7:57man, and my spirit shall be in your hearts.
- 8:05Another Scripture. Let virtue garnish thy thoughts
- 8:11unceasingly, and the Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion.
- 8:18Another Pray always, and I will pour out my spirit upon you, and
- 8:26grace shall be your blessing. Another one always remember him,
- 8:35that they may have his spirit to be with them.
- 8:40Another look unto me in every thought.
- 8:45Doubt not, fear not. Behold the wounds which Pierce
- 8:50my side, and also the Prince of the nails in my hands and feet,
- 8:55and be faithful. Keep my commandments, and ye
- 8:59shall inherit the Kingdom of heaven.
- 9:02Another, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever
- 9:08thou goest, let it be in the Lord.
- 9:11Yeah, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord.
- 9:16Yeah, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord
- 9:20forever Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will
- 9:26direct thy direct thee for good. Yeah, when thou liest down at
- 9:31night, lie down unto the Lord, that He may watch over you and
- 9:37your sleep. And when thou risest in the
- 9:40morning, let thy heart be full of things unto God.
- 9:43And if you do these things, you shall be lifted up at the last
- 9:47day. I know that's a lot, but with
- 9:51all of those statements, all of those statements have two things
- 9:54in common. They all recommend a constant,
- 9:58continual, unceasing focus which which of necessity must be
- 10:03something that can be done while doing everything else.
- 10:10Second, they all lead to the same conclusion, the
- 10:14companionship of the Holy Ghost and eternal life, the greatest
- 10:20of all the gifts of God. If the Lord has commanded us to
- 10:25do various things all the time, all at once, and if they all
- 10:30lead to the same result, they must be different iterations of
- 10:34the same thing. The one thing?
- 10:40Remember Him always, that you may always have His Spirit to be
- 10:45with you and ultimately inherit the Kingdom of heaven.
- 10:51That's the one thing. It is the one thing you can do
- 10:57while doing everything else that will also enhance and make
- 11:02everything else better and clearer.
- 11:06The one thing in the words of Paul gathers together in one all
- 11:12things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on
- 11:17earth, even in Him. While the one thing enhances
- 11:24everything else, focus on anything else diminishes
- 11:29everything else. In the story of Ben Hur, the
- 11:34author Lou Wallace said it is not often we have hearts roomy
- 11:39enough for more than one of the absorbing passions.
- 11:43At the same time, in its blaze, the others may continue to live,
- 11:48but only as lesser lives. But in the case of the One
- 11:54Thing, our hearts are expanded to make room for all good
- 12:00things, while the One Thing makes everything else clearer.
- 12:05Obsession on anything else leads to blindness of everything else.
- 12:11The One Thing is timeless. Not only is it relevant across
- 12:18the broad expanse of time, but also, unlike almost every other
- 12:23endeavor, attention devoted to it does not limit attention
- 12:27given to other things. It is not bound by time or the
- 12:32law of opportunity costs. It is the one thing, the only
- 12:38thing, that enhances everything else and requires no time
- 12:42because it should be done all the time while doing everything
- 12:47else. The supreme expression of
- 12:51intelligence, the crowning achievement of every rational
- 12:55being, is to choose best, to make choices that will produce
- 13:01change and growth within us, to become most like our Heavenly
- 13:06Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:10The power that produces that kind of change, the power by
- 13:16which lowly, vulgar man may be not only redeemed but also
- 13:22exalted, not only forgiven but also changed.
- 13:26The power that not only reforms but transforms.
- 13:32The power that not only cleanses but also strengthens, that
- 13:37reveals the best choices, the power to carry to a conclusion
- 13:42the best choices. The power that sanctify changes
- 13:47and endowses by degrees with the divine nature.
- 13:52The power that is life is God's power.
- 13:57It is the gift and power of the Holy Ghost.
- 14:03In this life, God's presence is His Spirit.
- 14:09Therefore, to always remember Christ that you may always have
- 14:14His Spirit to be with you, is to close. close the gap.
- 14:20It is reunion with God in this life, more than waiting for
- 14:27eternal life later. It is surmounting the essential
- 14:31problem in life today, which is separation from God our Father.
- 14:39Remember Him always is essentially equivalent to Thou
- 14:45shalt have no other gods before me, which is essentially
- 14:50equivalent to the central message of the Old Testament,
- 14:54which is, A only God can bless us.
- 14:59B He will bless us if we remember Him to keep His
- 15:04commandments. C Therefore remember Him to keep
- 15:09his commandments. Again, the supreme expression of
- 15:16intelligence, the crowning achievement of every rational
- 15:19being, is to choose best, to make choices that will invite
- 15:25God's Spirit and produce change and growth within you to become
- 15:30more like the Lord Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.
- 15:35To choose best is to always remember the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 15:40that you may always have his Spirit to be with you.
- 15:45That's the one thing choose best, follow Christ, Choose
- 15:52Christ, choose the Spirit. In the next episode, which is
- 15:59episode 15 of this series, the Stand Forever series, we will
- 16:05focus on choosing the gift of God's life by engaging in his
- 16:11work. I hope you will join me then.
