- 0:00Speaker 1: You went so much more deep than I did. Because
- 0:02Speaker 1: my next like is Hello Marco Grazzini. I think he
- 0:05Speaker 1: is rot. Hey everyone, Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hallmark review podcast. I'm Megan and I'm a lifelong Hallmark
- 0:25Speaker 1: movie fan. I'm Wendy and I'm not ashamed to admit
- 0:28Speaker 1: this movie me mecrery twice. Oh twice twice, I can
- 0:33Speaker 1: guess one of those. Today we're discussing hearts in the Game,
- 0:35Speaker 1: which originally aired on Saturday, April twenty ninth, twenty twenty three.
- 0:42Speaker 1: If you want to connect with us outside of the podcast,
- 0:44Speaker 1: we'd love for you to follow us on Instagram, where
- 0:46Speaker 1: you can find us both as at Girls Gone Hallmark
- 0:49Speaker 1: and at Megan and Wendy. You can also jump into
- 0:52Speaker 1: our Facebook group Girls Gone Hallmark or shoot us an
- 0:58Speaker 1: email MEGANO Wendy at gmail dot com. Now, as we
- 1:00Speaker 1: were prepping for this episode, Wendy has some piping hot
- 1:04Speaker 1: Hallmark tea. But I want to get a couple of
- 1:05Speaker 1: Hallmark housekeeping notes out of the way. Okay, First, the
- 1:08Speaker 1: June movie lineup is out. It is a wedding season
- 1:13Speaker 1: themed for wedding themed movies. You can find the full
- 1:16Speaker 1: details on that on our website, Megan and Wendy dot com.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Hallmark is also dropping two new mysteries and in the
- 1:22Speaker 1: month of May and June they're doing something a little
- 1:24Speaker 1: bit different with their movies and mysteries drops. They're moving
- 1:27Speaker 1: them from Sundays to Fridays, and no official announcement has
- 1:31Speaker 1: been made. How do you feel about that move? Oh,
- 1:33Speaker 1: I don't care. From a Hallmark reviewer standpoint on a
- 1:36Speaker 1: tight turnaround, appreciate the move actually better for us. On
- 1:39Speaker 1: a personal note, feel that, Yes, I would guess they're
- 1:42Speaker 1: just testing it. Sunday premiers typically do less well than
- 1:45Speaker 1: the Saturday premiere, so they're maybe trying to see what happens,
- 1:50Speaker 1: trying to grab that Friday stay at home those tgif
- 1:54Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna say tjif I was going to say, like,
- 1:56Speaker 1: you know, that Friday night to me is like the
- 1:59Speaker 1: CBS crowd, you know what I mean, watching the Magnum
- 2:03Speaker 1: PI and whatever else is on. Yeah, and this way
- 2:07Speaker 1: they're also not competing with their series, which typically drop
- 2:10Speaker 1: on Sundays. So yeah, but this ride is going to
- 2:13Speaker 1: end in like the next five weeks, right, But then
- 2:16Speaker 1: Chesapeake Stores is coming back with the new section this summer.
- 2:18Speaker 1: You're right, Oh my goodness, when Calls the Heart is
- 2:22Speaker 1: coming back with a new season, so that will be
- 2:24Speaker 1: on Sundays, I imagine. Okay, So they're just they're just
- 2:27Speaker 1: playing with the schedule. That's okay, Yeah, I'm okay with that.
- 2:31Speaker 1: That's what d drs are made for, exactly on demand
- 2:33Speaker 1: doing I mean, and peacock and friendly, all those things,
- 2:37Speaker 1: exactly a couple of things. Please. Oh. We got some
- 2:40Speaker 1: feedback regarding last week's A Pinch of Portugal. Uh huh
- 2:45Speaker 1: Facebook group member Laura. She shared this in the Facebook group,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and I thought it was interesting. She said, quote, I
- 2:52Speaker 1: love the scenery and the plot was interesting. However, I
- 2:55Speaker 1: did not like the way they portrayed the only two
- 2:58Speaker 1: Portuguese characters we really got to see, the gruff fishermen
- 3:02Speaker 1: and the scheming marketer. I have friends who live in Portugal,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and by all reports, the people are overwhelmingly kind, generous,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and quick to help a stranger. I think that's a
- 3:11Speaker 1: good point. It is a good point because imagine if
- 3:14Speaker 1: like they at Pairs Proposal, if they and I can't
- 3:18Speaker 1: really remember, did they stereotype the French people as being unfriendly.
- 3:22Speaker 1: They may have, but the two leaders of that French
- 3:26Speaker 1: jewelry line, they were lovely. Like. There was also their
- 3:30Speaker 1: like coworker, their French counterpart, who was kind of slimy. Yeah,
- 3:35Speaker 1: but there were certainly quite a few lovely French people.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And the front desk person at their hotel wasn't he
- 3:41Speaker 1: also wonderful? I think so. So I don't think it
- 3:45Speaker 1: was an overall wash of slimy French person in that movie. Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So it's an interesting point, like, let's celebrate some of
- 3:53Speaker 1: the cultures and beyond just countries. Yeah, and you know,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I kind of see why in that movie the potential
- 4:01Speaker 1: loven just had to be kind of slimy. But looking
- 4:05Speaker 1: at it, there's no reason the voting dude needed to
- 4:09Speaker 1: be anything but lovely, right, Like, it doesn't move the
- 4:11Speaker 1: story forward, right right? Okay, I thought it was a
- 4:14Speaker 1: good note too. I agree. Okay, there's an impending writer
- 4:19Speaker 1: strike there is. It's I think, well, why oh this
- 4:23Speaker 1: draw this episode drops Tuesday May. Second, I think their
- 4:26Speaker 1: contract ends tonight, like at midnight. Okay, So I don't
- 4:29Speaker 1: know exactly, so don't come at me with the specific details,
- 4:33Speaker 1: but it flows. It's very soon, and I had to wonder,
- 4:37Speaker 1: is this writer's strike going to affect our Hallmark writers? Right?
- 4:43Speaker 1: We know they don't have a ton in the can, right,
- 4:46Speaker 1: So I asked in our Facebook group because there are
- 4:49Speaker 1: a lot of smart people there who are connected to
- 4:52Speaker 1: a lot of Hallmark people, right, And apparently the answer
- 4:56Speaker 1: is yes, According to Eric, who is the co host
- 5:00Speaker 1: of Hallmark Mysteries and More podcasts, he told us that
- 5:04Speaker 1: the Mystery one on one writer John Christian Plummer spoke
- 5:08Speaker 1: extensively about the strike in a recent interview on their podcast,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and he also mentioned that writer director Ron Oliver as
- 5:17Speaker 1: well as writer Marcy Holland are both gearing up for
- 5:20Speaker 1: the strike, but they're hoping for a resolution. If you
- 5:22Speaker 1: remember when we had a writer strike before seven eight,
- 5:26Speaker 1: somewhere around there, six oh seven. Yeah, I think you said,
- 5:30Speaker 1: O seven. I was quite pregnant with my first child.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I was born in June of that year, so I
- 5:38Speaker 1: think I might have been okay with the volume of
- 5:41Speaker 1: reality reality television that kme our away that year, I know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: And I'm like, well, Hallmark has nothing to worry about
- 5:47Speaker 1: because they can just reshow re air movies upon movies
- 5:51Speaker 1: upon movies that they've already shown. Right, Sure they'll have
- 5:54Speaker 1: an audience for that. But in terms of like new
- 5:57Speaker 1: content we might just see, I mean on network TV
- 6:01Speaker 1: might just seemed like more game shows and reality TV.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I'm very curious to see if it happens, how it
- 6:07Speaker 1: plays out, but I am worried about the jobs and livelihoods,
- 6:10Speaker 1: about the many people affected by this sort of thing.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Me too, Me too. But I will say for us,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I think we're good here. If if a writer's strike happens.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Ye had girls on Hallmarks not going away with There's
- 6:22Speaker 1: a million movies for us, so we're not going anywhere, guys.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And finally here's the piping hot tea. Can't wait. It's well,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you know. It was quietly announced on April twenty first
- 6:33Speaker 1: that director Michael Damien tweeted, do you know who Michael
- 6:37Speaker 1: Damien is? No? He is the director of Christmas Waltz
- 6:42Speaker 1: Oh with Lacy Shrber Shabeier every Time guys and Will Camp. Yes,
- 6:48Speaker 1: maybe one of my top five movies. I love it anyway.
- 6:51Speaker 1: He tweeted that he has recently signed a three picture
- 6:54Speaker 1: deal with MPCA. It's important to remember MPCA included in
- 7:00Speaker 1: that deal is a sequel to Christmas Waltz. Wow. How Whever,
- 7:07Speaker 1: first of all, the new movie will be called Paris
- 7:10Speaker 1: Christmas Waltz and will film in Europe in June per Deadline,
- 7:15Speaker 1: which is like a legitim repub urse. However, at this time,
- 7:19Speaker 1: the leads have not been announced, and it is unclear
- 7:21Speaker 1: if this movie will end up on Hallmark channels, since
- 7:25Speaker 1: Damien makes movies for Netflix, Hallmark, and GAFF. Wait a minute,
- 7:30Speaker 1: here it comes, Sleepy Kittie Pot also weighed in and says, quote,
- 7:33Speaker 1: Hallmark's work with NPCA is limited to one calls the
- 7:37Speaker 1: heart since the launch of a Great American Family, where
- 7:42Speaker 1: Brad k r e Voy is an investor Cravoy, he
- 7:48Speaker 1: is the CEO of MPCA, so, and he's an investor
- 7:53Speaker 1: in GAFF. Yeah. So okay, so it all remains to
- 7:58Speaker 1: be seen. We shall is the answer to that. Yeah,
- 8:01Speaker 1: but I'm thinking it's not gonna happen on Hallmark. Well,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I think it if the leads are not the same.
- 8:09Speaker 1: It's a different movie. It's no big loss, right, It's
- 8:12Speaker 1: a different movie. It's not like it's a sequel. Yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 1: if we were to lose a Lacey Shabert will Kemp
- 8:17Speaker 1: movie to GAF that would be a different story, but
- 8:22Speaker 1: a story about two people who dance starring any other
- 8:27Speaker 1: two actors. Meh, yeah, I agree because I think the
- 8:30Speaker 1: magic in that movie. The story was fine, it was nice,
- 8:32Speaker 1: but the magic in that movie was Lacey and Will
- 8:35Speaker 1: and their chemistry together say free and they have a
- 8:39Speaker 1: mystery coming out the Dancing Detectives. So it's just the
- 8:44Speaker 1: dancing Detective because she's the detective. Okay, he's not. As
- 8:48Speaker 1: I was saying that word, I wondered if it was plural.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Also fun note, I'm going to say, that's just going
- 8:54Speaker 1: to open a whole flood of pitches from us the
- 8:58Speaker 1: dancing Detective. It's a deadly tango. What else can we have?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Like the slain Salsa? I don't know, you know what
- 9:05Speaker 1: I mean? Spiked Heals? Yeah, oh I love it. Spiked
- 9:09Speaker 1: Heals come soon coming. Follow our Instagram for more guys.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Are you ready to talk Hearts in the Game? Sure,
- 9:17Speaker 1: let's hear A synopsis. A publicist helps a picture for
- 9:20Speaker 1: the New York Mets and her boyfriend from high school
- 9:23Speaker 1: find his way back to the game and her heart.
- 9:26Speaker 1: This movie stars Aaron K. Hill, who has an impressive
- 9:29Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty seven acting credits. We at Girls
- 9:32Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark first saw her in a Timeless Christmas and
- 9:35Speaker 1: let me just say to us, come a long way baby,
- 9:38Speaker 1: Like you know, I remember not liking that movie. Oh
- 9:42Speaker 1: you hated that movie. I don't like time travel stuff. However,
- 9:45Speaker 1: I don't think we can put it on Aaron Khale
- 9:47Speaker 1: and I'm going to leave it at that, Okay, Marco Crasini,
- 9:50Speaker 1: please diego. He has forty nine acting credits, including the
- 9:54Speaker 1: series Virgin River, and he was last seen on Hallmark
- 9:57Speaker 1: in the movie Right in Front of Me, written by
- 10:00Speaker 1: one Julie Sherman. Wall Yeah. Writer Shelby Lake Bartlestein is
- 10:05Speaker 1: a little new Baby writer. She has four writing credits,
- 10:08Speaker 1: but actually actually it's only three because we learned that
- 10:12Speaker 1: Hearts in the Game was originally titled The Spin Cycle.
- 10:15Speaker 1: There is an IMDb listing for that movie. The actors
- 10:18Speaker 1: and director and writer are attached to that IMDb listing.
- 10:21Speaker 1: She shows four credits, but it includes both Hearts in
- 10:24Speaker 1: the Game and The Spin Side. So every actor and
- 10:26Speaker 1: producer and whatever in this movie is credited with I'm
- 10:30Speaker 1: kind of sure they went that deep. But the leads
- 10:33Speaker 1: and the main crew have two credits. Yeah It director
- 10:37Speaker 1: Stacey Hardin has nine directing credits, mostly Hallmark, but tons
- 10:41Speaker 1: of ad work on shows like Timeless, Zoe's Extraordinary Playlist,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and Hallmark Favorite Unreal. I love all those shows, by
- 10:50Speaker 1: the way, and I say Hallmark Favorite Unreal is because
- 10:52Speaker 1: there's so many actors and actresses from the Hallmark world
- 10:56Speaker 1: who have appeared on Unreal. Many. Brennan Elliott, who has
- 11:02Speaker 1: a starring role in that show, Donia Cash, plays Jax
- 11:06Speaker 1: in this movie. They made their Hallmark debut in the
- 11:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty two Holiday movie cycle with roles in Hashtag
- 11:14Speaker 1: x Miss and The Holiday Sitter. They also were in
- 11:19Speaker 1: seven episodes of A Million Little Things, which rounds out
- 11:23Speaker 1: their twenty two acting credits. I kind of want to
- 11:26Speaker 1: watch that show. We follow one of the writers on
- 11:29Speaker 1: social media, and so I've been seeing a lot of
- 11:31Speaker 1: promotion for promotion and the show is ending. Oh is
- 11:35Speaker 1: the show series is ending? Yes, that's why Elizabeth is
- 11:38Speaker 1: no longer working there because the series itself is ending.
- 11:40Speaker 1: What is she going to do next? She's working on
- 11:42Speaker 1: her own stuff. She's not currently attached to anything. She's
- 11:45Speaker 1: like I think she's sold a pilot. Oh. Donia Cash
- 11:49Speaker 1: is also the first openly non binary actor to work
- 11:52Speaker 1: on the Hallmark Channel. Yes I loved them standout role
- 11:57Speaker 1: for short star of the movie. Yes, I agree. Surprise
- 12:00Speaker 1: this was filmed in Vancouver. Okay, so let's talk about
- 12:04Speaker 1: some base ball baseball corner. Yeah, this is new for
- 12:08Speaker 1: us here. Meg and I both have like some unique
- 12:13Speaker 1: experiences with baseball. Can I stop you right there? There
- 12:17Speaker 1: was a conversation in our Facebook group last night about this.
- 12:20Speaker 1: You made that exact comment, and I laughed so hard because,
- 12:23Speaker 1: let me tell you, Wendy's baseball experience is that she's
- 12:28Speaker 1: like baseball royalty adjacent and my baseball experiences. I met
- 12:32Speaker 1: my husband at a baseball game. Oh girl, is that
- 12:34Speaker 1: you had tike? In my mind? You were always that
- 12:37Speaker 1: girl trying to catch the attention of the baseball player
- 12:39Speaker 1: when you were single, Gal Megan going to the baseball games.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I had a longtime crush on Anaheim Angel They were
- 12:45Speaker 1: the Anaheim Angels at the time. They're not anymore, but
- 12:48Speaker 1: I was like a season ticket holder, my family husband
- 12:53Speaker 1: season ticket holders. I was there a game five when
- 12:56Speaker 1: they won the American League championship. This series. I bet
- 12:58Speaker 1: if there was social media that time, you would have
- 13:00Speaker 1: been fully in that dude's damns. He's very happily married
- 13:05Speaker 1: right now. At that time, was he married? No? No,
- 13:07Speaker 1: he was single, and his wife is currently significantly more
- 13:11Speaker 1: famous than he is, single and ready to mingle. So
- 13:13Speaker 1: in terms of my baseball royalty, I'm not going to
- 13:16Speaker 1: say names on here. Yes, for their privacy, sure, but
- 13:20Speaker 1: yes there is some adjacent baseball family ties. Yes. And
- 13:25Speaker 1: and I'm just a dugout diva. I was trying to
- 13:27Speaker 1: come up, what do they call them? Diva? Is that
- 13:30Speaker 1: what they really call a great name? Oh my gosh,
- 13:33Speaker 1: that's so funny. Really reality show dugout diva. I really
- 13:38Speaker 1: it paints a very different picture. I just have been
- 13:42Speaker 1: a lifelong baseball fan. Moving on. So, baseball was a
- 13:48Speaker 1: big storyline in those movies. Indeed, and in our Facebook group,
- 13:53Speaker 1: listener Paulo wrote in saying a few things that I
- 13:56Speaker 1: want to share, and you guys can join our Facebook
- 13:59Speaker 1: group anytime girl's gone homework you can see the whole thread.
- 14:01Speaker 1: But here here's what she had to say. Quote Diego
- 14:05Speaker 1: was supposed to be the greatest picture of the past decade.
- 14:08Speaker 1: WLU Game seven. It's happened before and everyone moved on. Yeah,
- 14:13Speaker 1: athletes are not machines. It's a game because you don't
- 14:16Speaker 1: know what the outcome is going to be. So do
- 14:18Speaker 1: you think like when an athlete has like a real
- 14:22Speaker 1: bad game like that, that doesn't do something to them mentally?
- 14:26Speaker 1: I absolutely do. Where I think this movie went' wrong
- 14:30Speaker 1: is I don't think that this was the kind of
- 14:32Speaker 1: move that needed a PR person to step in. One
- 14:36Speaker 1: of my wishes is I wish that Hazel were in
- 14:39Speaker 1: the role of a sports psychologist instead of a PR person,
- 14:42Speaker 1: because that's what he needed. He didn't do anything wrong
- 14:46Speaker 1: other than play a bad game. He didn't say conspire
- 14:51Speaker 1: to steal the World Series and cheat on baseball's biggest stage.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And then that dude, by the way, still continues to
- 14:58Speaker 1: get to play. None of the players on the Astros
- 15:01Speaker 1: wherever punished. Only the coaching staff was. And if you've
- 15:04Speaker 1: ever been to a game where said players are batting
- 15:07Speaker 1: that is not in their home stadium. Years later, this
- 15:09Speaker 1: was in twenty seventeen that this happened, they will boo
- 15:12Speaker 1: that person at every single app back. I still get
- 15:14Speaker 1: booed at Angel games, right, every single at, not even
- 15:17Speaker 1: the first at bat, every single appat. Now, what I'm
- 15:20Speaker 1: saying is the Astros didn't fire those guys. They didn't
- 15:23Speaker 1: need a reputation rehab. They're like, can you hit the ball? Great,
- 15:27Speaker 1: it wasn't a physical inability to pitch. We know that
- 15:29Speaker 1: there was other stuff going on. He needed a sports psychologist.
- 15:32Speaker 1: The Mets do not care what anybody thinks about this dude.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I mean, it's great if they are excited about him
- 15:38Speaker 1: and they want to come watch him play. But if
- 15:40Speaker 1: he can win games, that's all they care about. Right.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Who cares if you like him and you tell the
- 15:45Speaker 1: story of why he pitched a bad game, humanize him. Sure,
- 15:49Speaker 1: I mean I think there's value in a human interest
- 15:51Speaker 1: story like that, But that's not what's going to get
- 15:54Speaker 1: the Mets to re sign his contract. Right, So that
- 15:57Speaker 1: is my question. Was his contract pending? That's unclear to me.
- 16:01Speaker 1: The whole thing was like, he needs a reputation rehab. No,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I just don't believe that he does. You know what
- 16:06Speaker 1: is so funny reputation rehab? I mean, Michael Vick was
- 16:09Speaker 1: dog fighting and then came back and people still like him.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Athletes like rape women and do terrible things and be
- 16:16Speaker 1: your pires and domestic eyes and all of these things,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and they still play. He didn't do anything wrong. He
- 16:22Speaker 1: played a bad game. It happens, and I can understand
- 16:24Speaker 1: that it would mentally mess with him. Sure, question though,
- 16:28Speaker 1: was he really upset that he did not do well
- 16:32Speaker 1: in that game or was he hiding his mental wellness
- 16:37Speaker 1: struggles with the death of his mother. I think the latter,
- 16:41Speaker 1: But again that's a different issue. Yeah, I hear you,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and I can understand perhaps as an athlete, that's not
- 16:48Speaker 1: a discussion you want to have. Maybe you're afraid of
- 16:50Speaker 1: what that does to your reputation, because I don't think
- 16:54Speaker 1: as a country we're one hundred percent there in accepting
- 16:57Speaker 1: of mental health struggles. Yeah. I have some notes on
- 17:00Speaker 1: that later later on, But again I stand by the
- 17:03Speaker 1: fact that I don't think you needed a reputation rehab.
- 17:06Speaker 1: There's some like inside baseball talk too, Right, he blew
- 17:10Speaker 1: it in the ninth inning? Right, There were questions brought
- 17:13Speaker 1: up into the Facebook group, like would the starting pitchers
- 17:16Speaker 1: still be pitching in the ninth inning of the World Series. Yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 1: you're gonna have to explain it to me. Well, the
- 17:22Speaker 1: answer is No, if you're in Game seven of the
- 17:24Speaker 1: World Series, you burn every picture you have my field,
- 17:27Speaker 1: they're not gonna give that picture a chance to get
- 17:29Speaker 1: to the bottom of the ninth I don't care if
- 17:30Speaker 1: he's pitched a no hitter at that point, too bad.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Like that's great. But if this is the game winning inning,
- 17:36Speaker 1: you put in a fresh pitcher. They're gonna and there's
- 17:39Speaker 1: no games after this, Like, there's no reason to keep
- 17:41Speaker 1: their pictures fresh. Put them in and let them pitch once. Mm.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Everyone throw your best pitch, every single pitcher. Yeah. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: just think that's not realistic. Hmm, that's all any more
- 17:52Speaker 1: baseball talk. No, I think that's good. What's your first
- 17:54Speaker 1: impression of Hearts in the game. My first impression of
- 17:57Speaker 1: this movie is that I hated the over the orange poster,
- 18:02Speaker 1: and based on that alone, it gave me super low expectations. Oh,
- 18:06Speaker 1: my first impression is how much did the Mets pay
- 18:09Speaker 1: Homewark for this promo? Well? Yeah, that's really funny, right
- 18:13Speaker 1: because somebody, I think it might have been Reddit, was saying,
- 18:17Speaker 1: like the Mets they were expecting on the Mets social
- 18:20Speaker 1: media to have some sort of like the motion of
- 18:23Speaker 1: the movie, and there was nothing. Oh, so I wonder
- 18:27Speaker 1: how much they did pay for it, Well, if anything,
- 18:30Speaker 1: but I would imagine you'd have to pay for the
- 18:31Speaker 1: use of the team name. And there's multiple instances of
- 18:34Speaker 1: the logo. Yeah, and the logo. I was like in
- 18:36Speaker 1: the press conference, every single person is wearing a Mets badge.
- 18:39Speaker 1: It's like a Mets lanyard. So I'm very curious. But
- 18:42Speaker 1: and they could have very easily made up a team.
- 18:44Speaker 1: They've done it in the past for other sports. Mm. Yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I wonder, I wonder I'd like some more inside information
- 18:51Speaker 1: on the Mets connection inside baseball. Yeah, yeah, all right,
- 18:55Speaker 1: let's talk about what we liked. I said it already.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Jack' is the absolute stock of this movie. I agree.
- 19:02Speaker 1: They played this role so perfectly. They were a great
- 19:06Speaker 1: assistant friend, shoulder to cry on comic relief. Yes, I
- 19:11Speaker 1: loved the relationship that Jackson Hazel had. I happened to
- 19:15Speaker 1: think that the most exciting baseball scene in this movie
- 19:19Speaker 1: did not involve Diego. It was when Jackson the driver
- 19:23Speaker 1: are talking about It's early in the movie and they're
- 19:26Speaker 1: talking about baseball and they're just getting so excited talking
- 19:30Speaker 1: about the Mets and talking about the possibilities of the season.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I love when people love things, and I thought that
- 19:36Speaker 1: was the most exciting baseball this fall. Specifics aside, I
- 19:41Speaker 1: am here to tell you that I really liked this movie.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I thought it was a narrative about mental wellness more
- 19:50Speaker 1: than anything. And I like that because I think there
- 19:54Speaker 1: are so many good stories to tell that don't strictly
- 20:00Speaker 1: have to beat about romance. We are complicated people. Complicated
- 20:05Speaker 1: people can watch complicated stories. Yes, that's what I liked
- 20:08Speaker 1: about it, that you went so much more deep than
- 20:11Speaker 1: I did. Because my next like is Hello, Marco Grosini.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I think he is rot yeah, and I think it's
- 20:17Speaker 1: great casting because he gives serious baseball player vibes to me.
- 20:21Speaker 1: The two characters i've seen him play this one in
- 20:24Speaker 1: this movie and then the chef and right in front
- 20:27Speaker 1: of me Yeah, both understated. Yeah. I mean he's not
- 20:32Speaker 1: the life of the party kind of guy. He's just real,
- 20:35Speaker 1: kind of low key. There was a scene. I really
- 20:39Speaker 1: love this scene when they Hazel and Diego are dancing
- 20:42Speaker 1: at their friend's house party. Yeah, and he says, you
- 20:46Speaker 1: want to get out of here? And I was like,
- 20:48Speaker 1: is this an equivalent to like, do you want to
- 20:50Speaker 1: come in for a night a calf. They went back
- 20:53Speaker 1: to her parents' house and said on the port swing,
- 20:55Speaker 1: so like not super sexy, but sweet and romantic. Yeah,
- 20:59Speaker 1: but did you We got a lot of affection before
- 21:02Speaker 1: we got to a kiss. Like they're holding hands, and
- 21:04Speaker 1: I was like, did I miss something because at this point,
- 21:06Speaker 1: as far as I can tell, they haven't discussed their relationship.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They're just holding hands in multiple scenes. Well, and they
- 21:14Speaker 1: kiss really early on. I do not early on, but
- 21:16Speaker 1: like before the end of the movie. Yeah, I'm like
- 21:18Speaker 1: that direction that Hallmark is taking these movies. Yes, because
- 21:22Speaker 1: relationships do not culminate in a single kiss, right, There's
- 21:25Speaker 1: a lot of built up there. One of my favorite
- 21:28Speaker 1: scenes in this movie is the second to last scene
- 21:30Speaker 1: where Hazel is crying. Jack's comes to her with the article.
- 21:35Speaker 1: At first, I thought it was so funny. I was
- 21:37Speaker 1: on debate team, so here we go and I just
- 21:38Speaker 1: read this so fast. That was really funny, and I
- 21:41Speaker 1: think it was a nice counterbalance. And Carly shows up
- 21:45Speaker 1: and there's a lot of forgiveness in that moment. But
- 21:50Speaker 1: she's like, I smell like food in tears, and Carly's like,
- 21:53Speaker 1: why don't we get you packed and showered. I just
- 21:55Speaker 1: thought it was a great scene, and I think that
- 21:57Speaker 1: sort of scene is something many Hallmark movies are missed.
- 22:00Speaker 1: We sometimes jump straight to the final scene. We see
- 22:04Speaker 1: Marco take off from the baseball diamond when he finds
- 22:06Speaker 1: out that Hazel has cut the article. It's not going
- 22:09Speaker 1: to happen at all, and he's realizing that he perhaps
- 22:12Speaker 1: was too hard on her in that moment. Yeah, And
- 22:14Speaker 1: I think in another movie, we very easy could have
- 22:17Speaker 1: seen that final scene without her sobbing to her friends.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And that's a nice world building moment. I thought I
- 22:25Speaker 1: would agree that was one of my favorite scenes in
- 22:27Speaker 1: this movie. In addition, this movie had some excellent lines.
- 22:31Speaker 1: For example, Jackson Hazel walking through the school hallways and
- 22:35Speaker 1: Jack's asks, were you a Gretchen or a regime? Yeah?
- 22:39Speaker 1: And for some Watters it might have went right over
- 22:42Speaker 1: their head and they were referring to mean girls. Yes,
- 22:46Speaker 1: which just celebrated like a huge Antichrist twentieth annivers And
- 22:49Speaker 1: there was another line that I thought was really funny too.
- 22:52Speaker 1: After they had that party at their friend's house. The
- 22:54Speaker 1: friend they're at the diner and he's eating like a
- 22:55Speaker 1: greasy breakfast and he's like, I'm too old for fun,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and I was like, ah, this feels so relatable. Real
- 23:01Speaker 1: music alert in this movie, we get listened to your
- 23:03Speaker 1: heart At the end, Oh yeah, and something else too.
- 23:06Speaker 1: There was another her and her friend were dancing to it.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I loved Hazel's outfits. At the beginning of the movie.
- 23:12Speaker 1: She had some gorgeous suits, so pretty, and then they
- 23:16Speaker 1: just like, really, I don't want to say downgraded, got
- 23:18Speaker 1: more casual. Towards the end. She was wearing like the
- 23:21Speaker 1: high school baseball sweatcher, I kind of we're in town
- 23:24Speaker 1: and jeans and whatever. I loved. Actually, when she and
- 23:28Speaker 1: Diego are both wearing like sweatshirts under their jackets, I
- 23:31Speaker 1: like that look. It was a good look. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I wondered if it was because it was colder perhaps.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Then I did read that there was snowing during the
- 23:38Speaker 1: production of this movie, really, so I wondered, Oh, they
- 23:41Speaker 1: were supposed to be in their sweatshirts, so they had
- 23:43Speaker 1: to throw a jacket on over there. I thought it
- 23:44Speaker 1: was a good look. We're freezing her buns off out here,
- 23:46Speaker 1: so yeah, Phineas help us out. I really liked how
- 23:49Speaker 1: they ended up together. You know, it was kind of like,
- 23:51Speaker 1: I don't want to say they were meant for each other,
- 23:54Speaker 1: but they had this natural connection that ended too and
- 24:00Speaker 1: then I can back together. I don't know, it just
- 24:02Speaker 1: made me happy. I liked this movie, Suomi, what'd you
- 24:05Speaker 1: wish for? Well? I thought it was a little unclear
- 24:08Speaker 1: about Hazel's backstory. Now, let me explain. It was referenced
- 24:11Speaker 1: a couple of times that Hazel has spun things. Okay, yes,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Correspondent Mike had some thoughts about that. Oh cours Mike. First,
- 24:20Speaker 1: when Diego when they meet at the restaurant and they
- 24:23Speaker 1: see that she's gonna be his new pr agent or whatever,
- 24:26Speaker 1: He's like, oh, he takes a dig at her base.
- 24:29Speaker 1: So you spend stories now for a living. That's fitting. Yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 1: And I was like, what's the backstory here? And then
- 24:35Speaker 1: it's said later on as well, I think like the
- 24:38Speaker 1: best friend might say something to her. Well, he says,
- 24:42Speaker 1: spin the story anyway you want, because you always do that.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Who said that? Diego says that, Ohner, Okay, so I
- 24:48Speaker 1: thought it was the best friend of it. Yes, that's
- 24:50Speaker 1: the scene, and I'm like, what's the backstory here? Why
- 24:54Speaker 1: is Hazel the bad guy. I don't understand, yes, especially
- 24:59Speaker 1: because we find out that he was the one who
- 25:03Speaker 1: leaves her, bails on her for prom Mike had that
- 25:07Speaker 1: very same complaint about that movement. Why the anger from
- 25:09Speaker 1: him when we're always being told he's the one with
- 25:11Speaker 1: the problem, right, Thank you Mike for validating my thoughts. Okay,
- 25:16Speaker 1: question about Carly. Their friendship ended because Hazel didn't come
- 25:21Speaker 1: to her wedding right because she had a work commitment.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Is it reasonable that a young woman starting in her
- 25:28Speaker 1: career could potentially have an unmissable work commitment. Yes, I
- 25:33Speaker 1: think it is. I wrote down why are we making
- 25:36Speaker 1: a successful career woman the villain? People miss weddings and
- 25:40Speaker 1: all kinds of things for work. Yes? Is it unfortunate? Sure,
- 25:45Speaker 1: But to end a friendship over could Hazel and Carly
- 25:49Speaker 1: have found another way to connect and celebrate her friend
- 25:51Speaker 1: and I understand that a wedding is an important day.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I think we could do our children a great service
- 25:58Speaker 1: by building up this expectation and that while it is
- 26:00Speaker 1: a great day for you, the reality is you cannot
- 26:04Speaker 1: expect your entire universe to revolve around that day. There
- 26:07Speaker 1: are going to be people who cannot be there for
- 26:09Speaker 1: one reason, and it's not a remark on your value
- 26:14Speaker 1: to them. Life is full. Yes, Okay, now I think
- 26:18Speaker 1: they could have totally acted the BFF storyline. Not needed.
- 26:22Speaker 1: It didn't add anything to this movie. Yeah, I didn't
- 26:24Speaker 1: need Carly to get a book deal at the end. No,
- 26:27Speaker 1: it's not well developed enough. Hazel asks or when they
- 26:29Speaker 1: first went into each other, like are you still writing?
- 26:32Speaker 1: And here's actually I have an issue with that because
- 26:34Speaker 1: as much as I want Hazel to be this like
- 26:36Speaker 1: high powered woman who's allowed to have a career and
- 26:39Speaker 1: celebrate that, I also think it needs to be enough
- 26:41Speaker 1: for Carly to be content in her life as a mom.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Like that can be enough. I loved writing. It's not
- 26:48Speaker 1: what I'm doing right now. I don't need to be
- 26:51Speaker 1: a best selling author to be valuable. My life doesn't
- 26:54Speaker 1: need to be big to beat. Yeah, which, by the way,
- 26:58Speaker 1: is the theme of a show on Apple TV Plus
- 27:01Speaker 1: called The Big Door Prize. I don't know what that
- 27:03Speaker 1: show is. It's I mentioned it on last month's episode
- 27:05Speaker 1: of Pop Culture Club, and long story short was that here.
- 27:09Speaker 1: It's an interesting show and it kind of explores like
- 27:11Speaker 1: the idea of destiny and the desire for a big
- 27:14Speaker 1: life isn't necessarily everyone's desire anyway. Okay, okay, I have
- 27:18Speaker 1: one more wish. Yeah, lay off of the daughter guilt.
- 27:22Speaker 1: At the beginning of the movie, the parents, Hazel's parents
- 27:26Speaker 1: were like guilty in her and her like we never
- 27:29Speaker 1: seen you anymore. You never come and visit and delivered
- 27:32Speaker 1: it yourselves. She has a job in New York, you
- 27:38Speaker 1: live in Ohio, and she's clearly connecting with you. Oh,
- 27:42Speaker 1: I remembered how much you love that cheesecake. I just
- 27:44Speaker 1: sent it to you. I'm calling you. I'm having these
- 27:46Speaker 1: moments acknowledge that lives are full. Yes, you ready for
- 27:50Speaker 1: we did to see that? Yeah? I have two Okay,
- 27:54Speaker 1: my first one it's about baseball, and I'm gonna need
- 27:57Speaker 1: you to clear it up. In a scene, he was
- 28:00Speaker 1: telling Hazel, he's like starting to talk about, like open
- 28:03Speaker 1: up about like what happened in Game seven, and he
- 28:06Speaker 1: says that he did not know he was going to
- 28:08Speaker 1: pitch in Game seven until the morning of the game.
- 28:10Speaker 1: And I must ask, isn't there usually a pitching schedule
- 28:14Speaker 1: on thousand percent? The only reason he would not know
- 28:18Speaker 1: that he was pitching in Game seven is if some
- 28:20Speaker 1: tragedy befell the scheduled pitcher because they absolutely have their
- 28:27Speaker 1: pitching schedule for the World Series lined up. Now, could
- 28:29Speaker 1: they adjust it because someone gets injured or things aren't
- 28:32Speaker 1: going Yeah, but not the morning of. Are their rules
- 28:35Speaker 1: in MLB about how much rest time you need between games?
- 28:40Speaker 1: I don't actually think so, But I think pitching is
- 28:43Speaker 1: so hard on you that they don't want to burn
- 28:46Speaker 1: out a pitcher. They don't want to overuse a pitcher.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So could hypothetically he have pitched Game six and was like, oh,
- 28:54Speaker 1: I'm done, I'm not pitching in Game seven. There's zero
- 28:56Speaker 1: chance you would have a pitcher start back to back
- 28:58Speaker 1: in the World Series, right, I think so? Zero again,
- 29:01Speaker 1: unless tragedy has befallen your entire starting But what if
- 29:03Speaker 1: he came in as no, he wouldn't come. A starting
- 29:06Speaker 1: picture doesn't come in as a relief picture, right No? Okay,
- 29:09Speaker 1: so thanks for clearing that up. Did you see that
- 29:12Speaker 1: there is a background track that's used throughout this movie.
- 29:16Speaker 1: It's not noticeable unless to you, like to me, the
- 29:20Speaker 1: first few bars sound like here comes the sun. Oh,
- 29:25Speaker 1: and then it transitions and it doesn't sound like that anymore.
- 29:27Speaker 1: But every single time it would start playing, my brain
- 29:30Speaker 1: would think that's what I was hearing, and then I
- 29:32Speaker 1: remember that's not what I was hearing. Interesting, I don't
- 29:34Speaker 1: remember any standout music besides those pop songs. I have
- 29:37Speaker 1: one more. Did you see that? Okay, Diego was wearing
- 29:40Speaker 1: Bobo black and white Nike dunks. Oh, they couldn't spring
- 29:43Speaker 1: for the real thing. For those who don't know what
- 29:45Speaker 1: bobo means, it means like fake knock off, knockoff pretend.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And I saw those same shoes that well, maybe recently,
- 29:54Speaker 1: so I wondered if that's where they came from a wardrobe. Hey.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Correspondent Mike also says Hazel appears to be wearing an
- 30:03Speaker 1: engagement ring in the final scene, but not mentioned. There
- 30:06Speaker 1: was no mention correct that they were now engaged. They
- 30:09Speaker 1: were like cooking together. Are we to assume that they're
- 30:12Speaker 1: just together now? Yeah? Okay, I don't know if I
- 30:16Speaker 1: really noticed it or not. I didn't notice it at all.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I just like that they were together and that they
- 30:20Speaker 1: now lived in New York. He plays for the Mets.
- 30:22Speaker 1: She lives there with her high powered PR jobs. I
- 30:26Speaker 1: don't understand her job, Like as you're saying that she
- 30:29Speaker 1: rehabbed his public opinion. But she also was the PR
- 30:32Speaker 1: agent who got her best friend a best selling book,
- 30:36Speaker 1: and it's almsfusing to me at the top of the movie,
- 30:38Speaker 1: she was like repping an actress I think who had
- 30:42Speaker 1: got caught eating a hamburger who was supposed to be
- 30:44Speaker 1: vegan that she was a PR crisis I think she's
- 30:48Speaker 1: supposed to be. I think sometimes people who write these
- 30:52Speaker 1: movies don't understand jobs. Yeah. Well, and I feel like
- 30:55Speaker 1: crisis PR is like something new ish, like a new
- 31:00Speaker 1: well in the age of social media, and people are
- 31:02Speaker 1: caught with their pants down, so to speak, right, they
- 31:04Speaker 1: hire a crisis pr to make things better. Yeah. Would
- 31:09Speaker 1: you rate this movie three and a half stars? Guys?
- 31:13Speaker 1: I liked it. I gave it four point seventy five.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I'm sorry. I really liked it. Wow,
- 31:19Speaker 1: I really liked it. I take that back. I gave
- 31:21Speaker 1: it four and a half stars. Four and a half. Well,
- 31:23Speaker 1: you upgraded it during the course of this review. Four
- 31:26Speaker 1: and a half stars. I liked it. I just thought
- 31:28Speaker 1: it was really sweet and the parts that made me
- 31:30Speaker 1: cry were the real tender moments between Hazel and Diego.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Tell me the moments that made you cry, all this
- 31:36Speaker 1: stuff about the mom and here's why. And it's probably
- 31:39Speaker 1: a personal reason. My mom has passed. It's been a
- 31:42Speaker 1: couple of years now, and like we're on the cusp
- 31:44Speaker 1: of Mother's Day coming up, and his mom was sick.
- 31:48Speaker 1: My mom was sick. I don't know. It was just
- 31:50Speaker 1: I triggered all these weird feelings for me, so I
- 31:53Speaker 1: just thought it was nice. So we have wen Love
- 31:57Speaker 1: Springs next week, and all I gotta say about that, ugh,
- 32:01Speaker 1: I didn't watch the previews. I saw the previews, and
- 32:05Speaker 1: while I enjoyed Rihann and fish in a picture of her,
- 32:09Speaker 1: the things I didn't like about her and a picture
- 32:11Speaker 1: of her seemed to be in full force in this movie.
- 32:13Speaker 1: We have a new ish addition to the schedule when
- 32:16Speaker 1: Love Springs next week, but we will also be back
- 32:18Speaker 1: on our new Ride Recamp Day this week, which is Friday,
- 32:21Speaker 1: with a recap of episode six of Ride. Thank you
