- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:06Our goal is to not only share our sermons, but to go beyond
- 0:09the sermon in conversations about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in our lives and our community.
- 0:15You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:17fumccollingswood. Dot org.
- 0:20Thanks for joining us for this conversation.
- 0:24So I got this new card game that a kid recommended but the church
- 0:29say dot dot dot because there are phrases that each person
- 0:34gets a card that says I convert. I rebuke that and Amen.
- 0:42And it gives us random. Discussion cards.
- 0:48Discussion cards and says before you start the game, say this.
- 0:52Pledge together. Maybe we should do this before
- 0:54church. We will not judge each other.
- 0:57We will speak freely. We will respect each other's
- 1:01opinion. We will take a praise break if
- 1:03any topic becomes too hot. We will have fun.
- 1:07It sounds good for your sermon series honestly.
- 1:09I mean. We might need to adopt that for
- 1:13our our conversations about money and sex and politics.
- 1:18Yeah, I think you should rename the sermon series to How to Get
- 1:22Fired or Fired Up. Or you could, you know, play
- 1:27with the graphics a little bit in that.
- 1:29And so you'd pick a moderator each topic on the discussion
- 1:34cards. After reading the topic, each
- 1:37player should hold up Amen or rebuke.
- 1:40That majority wins. The twist?
- 1:43If any player wants to give their opinion to attempt to get
- 1:46another player to change their response and they're successful,
- 1:50they get two extra points. That's where the I convert card
- 1:53comes. Yeah.
- 1:54Oh, that's pretty good. OK, these conversation topics.
- 1:58We're about to find out I I literally just unwrapped it
- 2:02right now. Where is the heretic card?
- 2:05I guess that's I rebuke that. Let's find this.
- 2:08Let's find this. OK.
- 2:10What you got? I don't know if we wouldn't.
- 2:12OK, Well, well. Communion should be real.
- 2:16Wine should be not. Can be.
- 2:21Right, right, right. No, Understood, Understood.
- 2:23I think I'm going to. I mean, if those are my options,
- 2:27I'm going to say I rebuke that. If if we're just black and
- 2:32whining it, I think I would say Amen.
- 2:36OK, so let's see if I can convert you.
- 2:40Why not? It like Jesus laid out an
- 2:45alternative wasn't even available until Mr. Welch,
- 2:49Pastor Welch. And so like, I understand why we
- 2:52have the grape juice. Sure, I want us to still have
- 2:56that as an option, but if I had to choose, should be.
- 3:01And it's like globally, every church in the world.
- 3:03Are we doing real wine or grape juice solely off of scripture?
- 3:09I think I'd go wine. So then are you also going to
- 3:13push that the only bread we should use is unleavened?
- 3:16Bread, if we're doing a should be and it's a blanket for the
- 3:21whole world, well, I guess then you got to get into
- 3:24availability. But I feel like wine's available
- 3:28everywhere. I don't know if unleavened bread
- 3:32is available everywhere, but then affordability, again, it
- 3:36should be. It's the what you're shooting
- 3:39for. But if it's unavailable, there's
- 3:41grace within it. But is it not then culturally
- 3:47appropriate? Like what's culturally
- 3:49appropriate? And if what's culturally
- 3:51appropriate is grape juice, then should that not also rise to the
- 3:58level of should what is the higher value?
- 4:02Contextualization or a legalistic interpretation of
- 4:06Jesus said it has to be wine and.
- 4:11Yeah, but then once you once you say, well then like what Jesus
- 4:13said with the wine, it doesn't matter.
- 4:15Then you just pick any drink you want and say rat Nifty 50s.
- 4:19Let's use, you know, milkshakes. Milkshake.
- 4:21Yeah. So I don't know.
- 4:30You did not convert me. You didn't convert me either
- 4:33spot I think like because I don't have a super strong
- 4:35stance. No.
- 4:37On it this one, since we're already entering the series of
- 4:42how to get fired or fired up. Or denying yourself.
- 4:46Or denying yourself how it whatever you want to call it.
- 4:51It's alright. Here's the card.
- 4:53It's OK for Christians to do yoga.
- 4:57I have a lot of feelings. About this say.
- 5:01And if we're talking it's OK to use yoga poses and even yoga
- 5:09flows for the purpose of stretching and physical health,
- 5:13I say yes. If you're bringing into that all
- 5:18the ideas of Eastern meditation and emptying yourself and all of
- 5:26that, then I say no. That's my dividing line.
- 5:32But if you had to do black, white, Amen.
- 5:34Or I rebuke that. I waffle.
- 5:39If we're talking unqualified, we're just saying it's OK to do
- 5:42yoga. I'm going to say no.
- 5:45I think I would also do that as well.
- 5:48I'd like if we can't nuance. It Yeah.
- 5:51Then. And those passes we nuance.
- 5:55So it's really hard. We say that we have to.
- 5:57Life because I've got some workout stuff that I've done
- 6:02that uses yoga poses and you go through these things and it
- 6:06stretches you and it's all good and I don't have any qualms
- 6:09about doing that I have friends who go and talk about the
- 6:14incense that's burning and you know the.
- 6:18More ceremonial. Yeah.
- 6:21And they talk about their mantra and that kind of stuff.
- 6:23And that's where I'm just like, no, I don't think that stays in
- 6:28bounds. Yeah.
- 6:30Well, now I'm really interested to dig into this a little bit
- 6:33more. Maybe we can start off a couple
- 6:36of episodes with some sure, because we.
- 6:38Don't have enough to talk about in the exactly series, yeah?
- 6:42Well, what what's you mentioned a few things coming up in this
- 6:46Deny Yourself series. You said money, entertainment,
- 6:51politics, sex. Is there another one?
- 6:54Pride. Pride.
- 6:55Specifically, we don't. Have any of that so you don't
- 6:57even have to bother. Yeah.
- 6:59With that one, how are you anticipating reactions to this
- 7:05series and how are you preparing sermons so that it's not Scott's
- 7:14opinions on these topics, but trying to be as faithful to
- 7:20God's Word because these are all topics that everyone's got an
- 7:24opinion on. Sure.
- 7:25But I think they're also opinion or they're all topics that
- 7:30Scripture is pretty clear on. And I think these are all areas
- 7:38that within our modern American lives specifically because
- 7:43that's the only context we can speak to, Rick.
- 7:46That's the context we live in within our modern American
- 7:50context. These areas have taken on
- 7:56inordinate weight in our lives. I think, you know, we talked a
- 8:02little bit about disordered desires on Sunday and the
- 8:07message, and there's a lot of disordered desires going on in
- 8:13these areas. And that doesn't all necessarily
- 8:18mean it's automatically sinful. You know, it's not sinful to
- 8:24spend money. It's not sinful to vote.
- 8:27But you know, we want to talk about the place of those things
- 8:31in our lives and the the plate, not just in our lives, but in
- 8:36our identity. Because as Christians, we are
- 8:42called to follow Jesus, to be citizens of his Kingdom and to
- 8:46live in a way that reflects Kingdom values in the world.
- 8:51And so that's my goal, you know, everything's going to be based
- 8:56in scripture. I've got, you know, as I worked
- 8:59out my spreadsheet for this, as you know, this, this scripture
- 9:02and this one and this one and this one for this message.
- 9:05And you know, if anyone feels like I'm misinterpreting those
- 9:11scriptures when we get to them or any, I'm open to those
- 9:15conversations. I don't pretend to have
- 9:18everything right. Doesn't have to pretend when he
- 9:20is. Which is not often, but but just
- 9:28trying as much as possible to lean on the word and to let God
- 9:33speak to these situations and do what I can to help bridge the
- 9:39gaps from the culture and the context that, you know, those
- 9:45passages were written to and how they can still apply for us.
- 9:51Yeah, you mentioned disordered desires.
- 9:54Yeah. And in this past week's sermon,
- 9:59some may have viewed your emphasis on just denying
- 10:04ourselves as in design, denying like sinful pleasures and
- 10:08temptation, and just strictly denying doing the bad things.
- 10:14OK, so like the idea that the disordered desires automatically
- 10:18equate to sinful activities. Yeah.
- 10:22Yeah, OK. Is that the all-encompassing
- 10:26message from the scripture that you preached on this week?
- 10:31That wasn't my intention. I could, I can kind of see how
- 10:35people could get there because I didn't spend as much time
- 10:39defining disordered desires. But I didn't say, you know, that
- 10:42It was things we know are wrong and we still want.
- 10:47I said it was disorder. Desires are things that are
- 10:50accepted within our culture that we know are contrary to God's
- 10:54word. But I also said it's good things
- 10:58that maybe we want too much of. And so there's certainly a sense
- 11:07in which I think that encompasses a lot of it,
- 11:12Although you could argue that there are times where we're
- 11:15called to deny ourselves and take more of like a servant
- 11:20posture. But I think you could still
- 11:23argue, I would still argue that the areas that that pushes up
- 11:30against us are disordered desires for how we think our
- 11:35life should go or what we should be able to expect in life.
- 11:40That we would expect to have an easy life or that we would be
- 11:45the one to were served or that we wouldn't have to sacrifice.
- 11:52I think it's all kind of tied up in there with those disordered
- 11:57desires. Yeah, a lot's covered in a
- 12:00little bit because it's this not desiring the bed, right?
- 12:05Not hyper focusing on the blessing instead of the one
- 12:08that's blessed you. Right.
- 12:11And then also the view of denying yourself means full
- 12:17service to God and fellow mankind.
- 12:23Yeah. How do you balance the loving
- 12:28God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength?
- 12:30Loving your neighbor as yourself while also taking care of
- 12:35yourself. Because I think of those that
- 12:41have burned out mentally, emotionally.
- 12:46I mean, I've always been told never trust a buff pastor.
- 12:53That much time to work out. Yeah, and it means that they're
- 12:58also not like, communing either in the House of houses of their
- 13:02people or inviting over for, like, meals and stuff like that.
- 13:05And especially in like, Southern and Midwestern culture where
- 13:09it's just all the cast roles in the Midwest.
- 13:12I was, I was told. And so how do we balance while
- 13:17also not counterbalancing that and being like, OK, well, to
- 13:22avoid burnout, I'm not doing ABCDEFG.
- 13:27And then it's like, I'm doing this one thing because I know
- 13:30I'm still supposed to, you know, serve, love God, but I don't
- 13:35want to risk, you know, doing too much for God and too much
- 13:38for neighbor. How do we navigate?
- 13:42Yeah. That and, you know, 30 seconds.
- 13:45In 30 seconds. Well, I I think it's key that
- 13:49when Jesus gave those commands or he affirmed those
- 13:54commandments because he wasn't giving them, they were already
- 13:58written into the law. He was just affirming that
- 14:01together they are the most important things.
- 14:06But I think it's important that Jesus didn't just say love the
- 14:10Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength
- 14:13and love your neighbors, period, right?
- 14:16He says love your neighbors as yourself.
- 14:21And so I think within that there is there's an implicit command
- 14:27that we actually have to love ourselves and we have to care
- 14:30for ourselves. You know, it's a little bit like
- 14:33when you get on the airplane, you're sitting there and they go
- 14:36through the whole boarding thing.
- 14:38They say, you know, please put your seat belt on like this.
- 14:41And if you know there's a crash and we're over water, your
- 14:45inflation device is located beneath your seat.
- 14:49And if the cockpit or the cabin loses pressure, the mask will
- 14:54fall down. Make sure you put your mask on
- 14:57before you try to help someone else, right?
- 15:01And so we have to take care of ourselves.
- 15:06We have to love ourselves if we're going to love other
- 15:11people. Well, because if we don't, then
- 15:14we are going to burn out or we're going to do it with an
- 15:18underlying sense of bitterness or resentment or fill in the
- 15:24blank there. And so I think we have to find
- 15:28that line of balance of caring for ourselves without falling
- 15:36into the modern self-care movement that says I can justify
- 15:42anything I want to do anything that feels good to me in the
- 15:46name of self-care, right? And so I even try to think of it
- 15:52not as self-care, but as self-care.
- 15:57That's what care soul, soul. Care.
- 16:00You know, how do I take care of the bottomless?
- 16:01My feet. I thought you said no sulk hair.
- 16:06No soul hair. What do I need to do to take
- 16:10care of my soul? You know which, which
- 16:14encompasses really all of us. Sometimes taking care of my soul
- 16:19means I need to go out and go for a walk and get some fresh
- 16:22air and sunshine and some movement.
- 16:25Sometimes soul care means I need to get alone with my Bible and
- 16:29spend some time in prayer and in the Word and connecting with
- 16:33God. Sometimes I need to go out with
- 16:38friends and and feel a sense of community with people you know.
- 16:44It doesn't mean it all has to be what we would think of as like
- 16:47spiritual activities, but caring for our soul, for me has been a
- 16:53helpful reframing of the modern self-care.
- 16:57I think that's really important because when you say love
- 17:00yourself, then it's are we applying worldly love or godly
- 17:03love to this situation? And I think we struggle with the
- 17:09differentiation of the two in every circumstance when we talk
- 17:12about love, loving anything. So I appreciate that
- 17:15clarification, and I think that's something that short
- 17:19enough, but good enough to chew on for a while.
- 17:23So we'll give the listeners a challenge.
- 17:25And what's an area this week that you can take time for?
- 17:31Soul care, trusting that God will use that to overflow into
- 17:37how you love and care for others, and hopefully in that
- 17:41time also draw you closer in your love relationship with Him.
- 17:46Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
- 17:49the conversation is over. We'd love to.
- 17:51Hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 17:53To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode
- 17:56or to join the conversation, you can head.
