- 1:11now it's time for today's episode of Pat Novak for Hire. In today's
- 1:17program is Reuben Callaway's Pictures Ladies and Gentlemen. The American Broadcasting Company brings to
- 1:23its entire network one of radio's most unusual programs, At Novak or Hire.
- 1:57Sure, I'm Pat nova for Hire. That's what the sign out in front
- 2:19of my office says. Pat Novak for Hire. You don't get in the
- 2:23blue book that way, but you don't embarrass your friends either, because down
- 2:27in the waterfront in San Francisco. They don't separate the good and the bad.
- 2:31I let them run together, and before long you got a caste system.
- 2:36You're either alive or dead. If you're on top, you keep fading
- 2:39the crowd and trying for sevens until you lose the dice. It's not the
- 2:44only way to play it unless you like worms. I rent boats, do
- 2:49anything else that'll put a fast handle on a bucket. But it doesn't always
- 2:53work out, because down here all your luck is junior grade and trouble is
- 2:57trumps. I found that out. Tuesday night was the first time I ever
- 3:02saw Reuben Callaway, and the last time too, if you like to keep
- 3:06a tidy record. It was about seven o'clock and I just started back across
- 3:10the bay from Saucelito. It could still see Mount Tamil plasts squatting on the
- 3:15marin shore. Light brown near the top, but dark and black farther down,
- 3:21like a cupcake that's been in the oven a little too long. A
- 3:24low fog was beginning to squeeze in on the fire side, so I kicked
- 3:29in the searchlight and that's when I picked him up. He was struggling feebly
- 3:32with his face near the water, and it was almost bald, so that
- 3:37when the light hit of me, he looked like a candle oop that somebody
- 3:38got tired of. I pulled alongside and started to haul him aboard. He
- 3:43brought most of the bay with him. Help me. Yeah, well,
- 3:46we'd like get a hold of you, wip. Come on there, sit
- 3:53down, No here, lean against the gunwale. Yeah, yeah, thanks,
- 3:57because the water redd or you've been shot a little. You have to
- 4:00know everything. No, it's your load, carry of mystery. Yeah,
- 4:03mo't your feet. I gotta get us ashore if you like it to go
- 4:06ahead, but don't hurry for me. If you feel that way about it,
- 4:11pick another spot to die and go back in the bay where you'll have
- 4:13company. You've got to help me. I want you to get in touch
- 4:16with a girl named Alma Peak. Yeah, you'll find it at the Empire
- 4:23Club out. I'm garystre you. My name's Ruben Kellaway. Tell her about
- 4:30me. She'll pay you for what you do collect bodies. Just give her
- 4:34this key. It's for a locker down in the bus station. Now,
- 4:40look, Pop, you don't know me. Suppose I use the key.
- 4:43You can't spend it. You better take the money, all right, Just
- 4:46see Alma and tell her it didn't work out. It didn't work out for
- 4:53me at all. I guess that's right. On the big things. You're
- 4:58one hundred percent. I don't did chick go here set up? I told
- 5:00you I didn't want you to dieing in here. Stop, hi fella,
- 5:06you don't have all of that jug They must have sent a fast chariot,
- 5:21because when I leaned over, the guy was dead, and he was working
- 5:25hard at it too. He was a skinny little guy, all bent up
- 5:29and twisted in the bottom of the boat like an old paper clip. They
- 5:32wouldn't do any good to straighten him out because he wasn't gonna sleep easy.
- 5:38His eyes were open and rolling around at the sky as if he was on
- 5:41the make for a star, and the skin hung loose around his face so
- 5:45that when you text it felt like an empty baked potato. I pushed him
- 5:49into a corner and started for Pare nineteen. When I got there, I
- 5:54pulled him on the dock and went down. The call homicide must have been
- 5:58about eight thirty. I took a cab out to the Empire Club. It
- 6:01was a gambling joint out on Geary Street, where they cut their whiskey and
- 6:04cards in different rooms. I asked a guy at the window if he knew
- 6:09Alma Bigs and he pointed her out with the roulette table. She was wearing
- 6:15a white satin evening gown, and as I walked up behind her, I
- 6:19noticed she moved in rhythm with a roulett wheel was interesting if it had been
- 6:24a merry ground at a pinched. I squeezed in next to her at the
- 6:28table, and I was thinking of trying it again when she started to talk.
- 6:31It's a type fit. Are you sure you like it? I'm not
- 6:34going to stay long. That's what Rudolph has said. Make your best,
- 6:38pladies, make your best. Stake me, Alma, I can't afford you
- 6:42dolling well, go broke for Reuben Calloway. Then four on the red.
- 6:50I ought to keep you for a lot, darling. Will you call me
- 6:54a hat? I'll take the chips. They look bad on callaway. Oh
- 6:58it's too crowded here, let's find it calls all right? Did he look
- 7:04pretty for a fish? He was all right? How are you pat Novak?
- 7:09I picked him up in the bay, said to look you up and
- 7:10tell you didn't work out. That would please Turk. Yeah, who's Turk?
- 7:15The reason it didn't work out is that all, mister Novak, except
- 7:19for a key. If it's a bus station locker, here you keep it,
- 7:23mister Novak. It won't buy anything now, looks sweetheart, I picked
- 7:25up your boy and dried him out. But that's all. We were small
- 7:27friends at best. So the services stop. You can come to a slow
- 7:30stop for two hundred dollars. Take the key and pick up what's in that
- 7:32locker. I'll get it for you later. Yeah, i'll meet you in
- 7:36an hour. Where's a good place your apartment? Well, it's a place
- 7:40I'll find it in the book. I hope you don't mind. No,
- 7:42the thin walls will save me. What's in the locker? What would approve?
- 7:46Proves you've got a small mouth angel, unless you're going to kiss it,
- 7:49don't worry. I'm thirty. Then all right, I'll bring the two
- 7:53hundred with me. Don't worry about the dough. Oh, because I scooped
- 7:56your chips off the table to see you later. She stood there watching me
- 8:09as I walked over to the cashier's window. She gave you a nice,
- 8:13warm feeling like a Bunsen burner in the middle of your back. And as
- 8:16she stood there in the center of the floor, smiling, you knew she
- 8:18could turn a glacier into a steam bath at four hundred yards. A nice
- 8:24little mouse that made you want to go home and test all the old traps.
- 8:28Well. I cashed in her chips, and the boy at the window
- 8:31shoved out two hundred rocks and a pained look, as if he just handed
- 8:33over his right lung. I got a cabin rode down to the bus station
- 8:37at seventh in Market. There were a few people sitting at the counter and
- 8:41a couple of old men on the benches waiting for somebody to get up and
- 8:45leave the funny papers. I went over near the wall and opened up the
- 8:48locker. Was a long trip for a small package. It's a square Manila
- 8:54envelope and was in the dress up on the corner Reuben Callaway photographer. I
- 9:00squeezed the envelope and it felt like photographs, but I wasn't sure. I
- 9:03started to close the locker when I turned, and then I tumbled for the
- 9:07first time. It's like getting a drop of rain on your hand before you
- 9:09ever look up at the sky. The two of them were standing over with
- 9:13the cigar counter watching me. The guy with a heavy overcoat and a little
- 9:18small guy about the size of a hangnail who wouldn't do any good to sit
- 9:22down, because I knew they'd stand till somebody condemned the building. So I
- 9:24walked past him out onto the street. There was a cab standing right in
- 9:28front. Cab, mister, yeah, swing up to the Saint Francis were
- 9:37you. Yeah, Now, look, you're gonna be tailed, so brush
- 9:39up on your allies if you'l like it that way. Hey, you were
- 9:46supposed to take a left there on mission. I got a license. Where's
- 9:50yours? I told you to double back over markets. I'll get out and
- 9:52walk and get don't like it I've been bought, mister, Oh my two
- 9:56friends. That's right. You should have come first. I got a part
- 10:00your hair. You got more chance with them. Here we are where you're
- 10:05going. You like Alley's, that's what you're gonna get. Yeah, take
- 10:09it easy, fella, You're not going anywhere. You were nice with your
- 10:11last today. Get easy. You better walk up a wall. They'll block
- 10:13the alley. See crowded alley. Yeah, give me the annual lope so
- 10:26we can all get out and Junior will help you give me the h Now,
- 10:35let's see it. Yeah, still see you you all through. I
- 10:41don't know I'll see you like him, Joe. No, that's the way
- 10:48it is, mister, you don't like you. I slid down like an
- 11:05old sock on a bony leg. I rolled over a couple of times and
- 11:07tried to stand up, but it wasn't easy. You might as well try
- 11:11to find a hair in a bowl of chopped suey. But it began to
- 11:13rain, and I figured it'd be easier to float out to the streets,
- 11:16so I went to sleep. When I woke up, the rain hadn't helped
- 11:20the alley much. It's like washing your kid's face and finding out he was
- 11:24ugly to start with. The mud had washed up against the walls, and
- 11:28there was a thick sour smelling down the alley. Across the street, there
- 11:31was a part of a sign sticking out that said eats, and that isn't
- 11:35what you felt like at all. I started groping around to get up and
- 11:39my hand hit the pictures. They were scattered all over like clothes in a
- 11:43boarding school. I picked them up and started for the street. On the
- 11:48way up in the cab, I got a chance to look at him,
- 11:50and they didn't make sense. There were six of them, and they were
- 11:54all just about the same, a bunch of mob scenes of that fire over
- 11:58in Oakland. I didn't have time to figure it out because the cab bulled
- 12:01up in front of the Saint Francis and I went in to call Alma Biggs
- 12:05and tell her the party was off. Part of that Alley must have come
- 12:09with me, because when I walked into the lobby, the dorman looked at
- 12:11me as if I'd just blown up a nunnery. I tried the number once,
- 12:15but nobody answered me. I decided to wait twenty minutes and call again.
- 12:18That was a mistake because I just got in the booth and started a
- 12:20dial and somebody started rapping on the door with a nickel. It was Helman
- 12:24from Homicide. I don't know. Thank come on out. You can't get
- 12:30a date in that suit. Nobody you want Helman. Come on out.
- 12:35You're a hot man, defined but you don't look in the right places.
- 12:39I'm a family man. Tell me about the dead guy. I don't know,
- 12:41Helman. He died in my boat. That's all I know. He
- 12:43didn't say anything, just sentimental stuff. His name's Reuben Calloway. Somebody threw
- 12:48him in the bay without instructions. I don't know a thing about him except
- 12:50he takes pictures. Yeah, I'll wipe off the drooler. Not your kind.
- 12:54Who is friends? He's got new ones by now. I don't know,
- 12:56Helman. How about that guy up in your couch. Huh, I
- 13:00just left your place. How about that guy in the couch. There's a
- 13:01gall up there, but that's all does she wears the spinders? Huh.
- 13:03Then take my word. It's a man, and you're gonna tell me he's
- 13:05dead, Helman. No, I'm not gonna tell you he's dead. Novak.
- 13:09He made a soft breather. When Helman mentioned the stiff up at my
- 13:24place, I knew we were going to be in low gear the rest of
- 13:26the night. Because Helman isn't an easy guy. He wouldn't give his wife
- 13:30an aspirin if she had concussion of the brain. He took me out the
- 13:33side door and we rode up to my apartment. The dead guy was lying
- 13:37on the couch with his arms across his chest as if he wanted somebody to
- 13:39give him a lily or a way out of this. The lamp was shining
- 13:43down in his face and the light was distorted, But when you stood over
- 13:46him, you could see his face with a color of press seaweed. If
- 13:50he had anything to be happy about, you couldn't tell, because his mouth
- 13:54was open and hung over to one side, like a loose chain purse filled
- 13:56with old teeth. His clothes were rumpled and his shirt was open at his
- 14:01neck. We could see a chain around his neck and a silver metal in
- 14:03the dole light against his chest. He looked out of place and made you
- 14:07feel funny, like seeing a picture of a madonna and a bowling alley.
- 14:11I watched him while Helman made noise. He still looks like a man.
- 14:15Yeah, who is he? George Leggett? What does that prove? Who
- 14:18his mother was? We're checking for a record the gun too? What gun
- 14:22one was lying here on the floor. I want to know if it's the
- 14:24same gun that killed Reuben Calloway. Well, you'll need some prints. Anybody
- 14:28can buy a handkerchief. Where were you tonight in an alley down their Mission
- 14:31Street? Do you like it down there? It's all right? You'd like
- 14:33it. I got shoved in and pushed around for these pictures. They don't
- 14:35look like the right kind of pictures. Well, I can't explain that,
- 14:37Helman. Maybe they took the good ones. How do you fit in?
- 14:39Calloway gave me a key to a locker down on the bus station. It
- 14:43was for a girl named Alma Biggs, and the girl sent you down.
- 14:45That's right, with two hundred bucks running money. If you want to know
- 14:48about Calloway, look up a guy named Turk. Turk what I don't know,
- 14:50Helman. Maybe he's only got one name. Maybe the other was Stinker.
- 14:52You got a police file, look him up. The girl mentioned him.
- 14:54That's all I know. We'll look him up. But I'm not gonna
- 14:56forget you. One guy's dead on per you're nineteen an they're up here in
- 15:01your apartment. It mixed up, Novak. There's a connection. I'll shop
- 15:03around till I strike it. You couldn't strike oil in the filling station.
- 15:07You've got a double murder shop for a pair of people. I'll shop far
- 15:09enough to get you, big shot, far enough to see you from You
- 15:11got the lard for it, Helman. Keep your mouth shut now you can
- 15:18hold in the blood. Helman talking, Yeah, where'd you find out that
- 15:28make it easier? You sure the same gun killed them both? Yeah?
- 15:35Yeah, I'll be in well. Oh prong number. No, they didn't
- 15:52give helm in a sense of humor. They gave him a loud laugh instead.
- 15:56When he walked out of my place, he was smiling like a funny
- 15:58man who's just exposed Santa Claus. I didn't feel very funny myself. I
- 16:03took another look at those pictures and I was as mixed up as a guy
- 16:07with a Mexican divorce. They were just ordinary pictures of a fire in Oakland?
- 16:11What made him so important? I was sure that Gunsel had taken some
- 16:15pictures? But well, were they any different than those? And why was
- 16:21Alma BIG's afraid to pick them up? And who was a guy named Turk?
- 16:25I was full of questions but no answers, like some guy at a
- 16:27peace conference. If I went over to anymore, I'd be counting my toes.
- 16:32So I got out of there and looked up Jock o'madigan. Oh he's
- 16:34a good guy, and he was a smart one too, until he decided
- 16:37the only way you can get a good trade in on hard Luckys with a
- 16:38bottle of whiskey. I found him at a Melio's bar, patting bill Le
- 16:42bartender on the back with one hand and pouring Jiggers a gin with the other.
- 16:47Had the chambers down and maris in the place where Louie dwell Ba ba
- 16:56ba, gentlemen, A song resolve on a spree from here to it,
- 17:04Jacko. I want to talk to you, Patsy. I'm driving a Harvard
- 17:08Man crazy. He's at the end of the bar, and stop drinking and
- 17:11listen to me. I've got to keep on drinking, Patsy, if I
- 17:15want to preserve any continuity in my life, because I don't drink to forget,
- 17:18but rather to remember to remember all the pleasant events of my life.
- 17:23There were two of them, I think, all right, Jacko. First
- 17:26was a girl I met many twilights ago, and the second, which is
- 17:32summer night in Saint Louis, when a bartender felt crazed with the heat and
- 17:36set them up on the house to stop it. I'm in trouble. Memory
- 17:37is a blessed toy, Patsy. But you have to be careful because it
- 17:41can be dangerous, like giving a rifle to a small child for Christmas.
- 17:47It's true he can get some temporary pleasure out of it by shooting various neighbors,
- 17:52but sooner or later he's going to kill the only rich relative in the
- 17:55family. Jacko, I'm tired, and memory is the same way. You're
- 18:00entitled to collect the few good ones you have. You're allowed to straighten them
- 18:03out and put them in order. After all, an old pool ball gets
- 18:07wrecked now and then you all through. Yes, I've run out of memory.
- 18:15Hellman thinks I killed two guys ten miles apart. Wasn't it difficult?
- 18:19The same murder gun. The whole thing is tied up with some pictures in
- 18:22color. A guy with the name of Ruben Calloway died in my boat.
- 18:26He gave me a key to a locker downtown. The pictures were there.
- 18:27Is that one of them? Yeah, take a look. Uh if it's
- 18:33a group pictures, they were a very unruly family. It's the Oakland fire.
- 18:37Two gunzels followed me and took some of the pictures. In the meantime,
- 18:40some guy got shot in my place. Everybody's after the pictures. Why
- 18:42have you seen the other pictures? No? I took an intermission that's why
- 18:45you got to help. Now you'll find Ruben Calloway's address in the phone booth.
- 18:49Get up there and go through his stuff with him. He doesn't sound
- 18:52legal, neither's a bum murder wrap. Get up there and go through his
- 18:55pictures. Try to find anything that'll fit in with his set. Where are
- 18:56you going besides jail? I gotta find a gal named Alma Biggs. You'll
- 19:00have trouble with a name like that. She's probably changed. The locker key
- 19:04was tabbed for her, but she hired me to run her errands. Is
- 19:07she pretty? Yes? If you like a fast track. Now I get
- 19:10up there, Jocko, Well you stop at Jacko. Just get up there.
- 19:12Forget about her. She'd scare you to death. Yes, well,
- 19:15at least i'd die hopeful good night, lover. Well, finding Alma Biggs
- 19:30was quite a job. I knew she was around, but I couldn't get
- 19:33to her. It was like trying to get a peanuts shell out of a
- 19:36back tooth. I called the Empire Club, but they didn't know anything about
- 19:40her. I went through all the phone books in the city directories and I
- 19:44didn't get anything but a sore thumb. And I didn't do any better with
- 19:47the hotels. I sat in Loopos and called them all one by one,
- 19:51and by one o'clock I knew more desk clerks than a vice squad cop,
- 19:55but no Alma bigs. Finally I went out to the Empire Club and started
- 19:59talking to the cabbys. About fifteen minutes later, one pulled up and remembered
- 20:03taking a girl in a satin evening gown up to an apartment on the hill.
- 20:07I called Helman and rode up there to check the names. Alma Beggs
- 20:11had an apartment on the second floor. I knocked on the door and she
- 20:15didn't answer, so I tried. The lights were out, so I closed
- 20:18the door and groped over to the desk. I should have noticed the draperies
- 20:23as I passed, because they were full of people. Wait a minute,
- 20:27all right, now, wait a minute, mister Nilvak stopped breaking things and
- 20:32day you may want amend me. Do you always sleep in the curtains?
- 20:36Do you always talk this long in the dark? Turn on the light?
- 20:40Yeah, I wanted to see who you were. George Leggett maybe, Oh
- 20:45do you know it? We're roommates. He died on my couch tony,
- 20:48anything serious or just howm drum dad? He's satisfied. What do you know
- 20:52about him? I never heard anybody say a bad thing about him. Gross,
- 20:56I never heard anybody mention him looking. So it's late. Who's George
- 20:59Leggett? Why do you care? Because homicide cares. They got callaway and
- 21:02leg it back to back, and they want my skin. It's a nice
- 21:03skin, darling pictures. Unless you're a social worker, you're not gonna like
- 21:08them. Here. Let me see they're not all here? Yeah, I
- 21:15figured that where the other pictures, Patsy, some gunuffs album. Two of
- 21:18them jumped me down their mission street. Who are they? We never got
- 21:21that friendly? Well they couldn't have been two of them. Well maybe the
- 21:22little guy was just window dressing, but he gave the right answers. That's
- 21:26see. I think you're a liar. Been nicer than homicide. I want
- 21:29those pictures, you do. I'm gonna take them away from you if I
- 21:34had them. That's a big enough gun to do it. Get the pictures,
- 21:37Patsy. It's a bad time for murder angel homicides working this week.
- 21:41I haven't time, Patsy. I'll push it down like a blade of grass.
- 21:44Get the pictures. I look, sweetheart. I took a job for
- 21:45two hundred bucks. It covers a tandem murder wrapping, a sapping down on
- 21:48Mission Street. But I won't cover big talk from you, and I'll put
- 21:49the gun away or I'll bend your heart. Your talk. You're around behind.
- 21:52Come on, give it a me feels good? Let it go or
- 21:56take the pain. Drom it. You don't have to hang on. I'm
- 22:02not a bar belt. You're handing out? Who's Turk? Hep it?
- 22:04You're hurting my arm. There's a guy named Turk. I want to know
- 22:07who he is. Who's he? Go ahead, tear it off, but
- 22:11you'll diagnous. Yeah you sound blue, novak. Oh what do you want,
- 22:18Hillman? I want to give you a reason. We got the corners
- 22:21report on George Leggott. Yeah, he died in your apartment. The blood
- 22:25of your carpet looks good on these slides. All right, So the murderer
- 22:27sold me the rug, So whit helman. So we ran down George Leggott's
- 22:30record. A Detroit gunman who got out here six weeks ago. Yeah,
- 22:34he traveled for years with a guy named Turk Spaniel now that's your boy.
- 22:37You better find him. We already have. Don't tell me he's up on
- 22:40the couch. He was born too soon for you. We checked with the
- 22:44Detroit police. What they say They know all about turk Spaniel. He was
- 22:48killed nine years ago in West Detroit. They found the guy that did it
- 22:52and sent him up to Lansing for life. Yeah. Yeah, he was
- 22:55a guy named Joe Biggs. Say hello to your girlfriend. Oh. I
- 23:08didn't talk to the girl because I knew she'd close up faster than a Dublin
- 23:12meat market. On Friday, I left her and went down to the Chronicle
- 23:15Morgue to find out what I could about Turk Spaniel. Helmet had covered it.
- 23:19Spaniel talked too much, and Joe Biggs killed him and left him growing
- 23:23out of a ditch like an old weed. I didn't know where to turn
- 23:27now. With Turk gone, who was after those pictures besides Alma Biggs?
- 23:32And what did they prove? I knew the answer was there, probably in
- 23:36plain sight, like a blimp on a football field, but I couldn't get
- 23:38near. It was past two when I got back to my apartment and the
- 23:42phone was screaming for help. Yeah, helly, this is Jocko. What'd
- 23:49you find out that Killaway was quite a photographer? Yeah? You should see
- 23:55some of the pictures. I mean nothing, all right, Jocko. Did
- 23:57you find anything to check for one thousand dollars from Alma Beaks? Yeah?
- 24:02What else? Some more pictures of the Opland fire. One of them looks
- 24:07good. Yeah, it's just like the rest, except in the background something
- 24:11is circled with a red pencil. That'll do it, Jocko. And there's
- 24:14a clipping here with another picture. I can't tell, but I think they
- 24:18match. What's it saying? Well, it's all about Jocko. What's the
- 24:22matter? Are you right, Jocko? Jocko? You all right? He
- 24:27says, to tell you no. After Jacko's call, I grabbed a cab
- 24:41and rode up to Callowie's apartment. When I got there, Jacko was sitting
- 24:44in the middle of the floor, sat as a steer on a sheep ranch.
- 24:45He hadn't seen who hit him, and the picture was gone, so
- 24:48was the clipping. I asked him if there were any negatives around. He
- 24:52said no. That meant that somebody was still on the pile for those negatives.
- 24:56So I called Helman and briefed him. He said he'd made us at
- 25:00Reuben Calloway studio in ten minutes. When we got there, it was dark,
- 25:03but I sensed Helman in the back room. Turned out to be a
- 25:06couple of pans of acid. But Helman was there going over the negatives.
- 25:08All this guy did was take pictures. Let me take a look with you,
- 25:11Helman. Can you spot the right one here? Jocko hold him up
- 25:15to the light. All right, here are the fire pictures. How about
- 25:18this one? No, no, I had that one. Yeah, that's
- 25:21it. And this fellow back here's the one that was circled holding up so
- 25:25I can see. Oh, turkey, you waited too long. Give me
- 25:29the picture, mister. All that gunnal do was making noise. Spaniel,
- 25:32it won't make enough to keep a secret. Just tand me the picture.
- 25:36Somebody knows you're alive. Now the pictures for laughs. It's your word against
- 25:38mine, and I'll be so far away I can't hear the argument. Let's
- 25:44saving. Don't give it to him now that yeah, I'll give it to
- 25:45him. You take it away, Helman. Thanks Novay that alley touch your
- 25:51manners? Just stand over there. Want to remember the way you look.
- 25:56Don't worry. I'll tell you about them turch backing. This guy is going
- 26:00to show around your breastbone. The guns are getting cheap. You better drop
- 26:03yours. Spaniel over there, you look the same, Turk, You're almost
- 26:10the same. You got this all wrong, Alma. Joe doesn't look the
- 26:14same. Nine years in the cooler and you lose your personality. Please,
- 26:18Alma, don't do anything crazy. After nine years you lose almost everything.
- 26:22Joe's lost everything but me. Down on the floor, Spaniel. I want
- 26:26you on your knees, please, Alma. You got it wrong. I
- 26:29got it all right, Turk, because Joe wouldn't lie to me when he
- 26:33said he didn't kill you. I knew you were alive. Please, Alma,
- 26:36down on the floor beside the table. Go easy, baby, you
- 26:37got a copper here. I can't hurt him. No back, Turk.
- 26:41Spaniel's legally dead. All you can do to a dead man is kick up
- 26:44the dust. You're not seeing this right. I'm gonna have a better chance
- 26:48than you. You couldn't see, Spaniel. You couldn't see your way back
- 26:52to help Joe out. You look good on your knees over by the table
- 26:56that along, Sweetet. I'm gonna help him see the whole and full up
- 27:00it. I'm gonna help you see spaniels. Please help me. You wouldn't
- 27:03do that. You got the short end of the bed. You better look
- 27:14at him and Jacko. Don't bother. I'm you're a baby doctor. We
- 27:17may need you him, not for this copper, Remember Tex Spaniels dead,
- 27:21Detroit says, So he looks live now. He can't be dead. They're
- 27:25and live here. I like your climate, but it's not that good.
- 27:30You can't see me, Turk, I'll bet you can hear me. Walk
- 27:33out of here. Goodbye, Turk. I'll send you a cane. Well.
- 28:00Hellman managed to get most of the story out of Turk's spaniel. Ruben
- 28:06Calloway stumbled into the whole thing, and he didn't know what hit him.
- 28:10He went over to Oakland to take some pictures of the fire, and he
- 28:14got a picture of Spaniel in the crowd. Spaniel saw him and trailed him
- 28:18over to this side. He had to get the pictures because back in Detroit
- 28:22he'd frame Joe Biggs with a riddled up body and skipped out of the country.
- 28:27He'd been away until a few weeks ago, and now he was waiting
- 28:32for a boat out of San Francisco, so he had to stay dead.
- 28:36He sent George Leggott after the pictures, but Leggott figured it was a good
- 28:40way to double cross him and stay in the clear, so he tipped off
- 28:44Alma Biggs, who'd come out here on our lead a few weeks before Kirk
- 28:48finally tell him with a local gunsil he killed Callaway and left Leggott in my
- 28:53apartment where he trailed him. Almost worked out, but he didn't get to
- 29:00that shop in time. Hellman asked only one question when I first met her,
- 29:07that I know that Helma Biggs was that hard no, and that saturn
- 29:14evening gown. I didn't think so. The American Broadcasting Company has just brought
- 29:32to the fifth of a new series, Pat Novak or Hire, starring Jack
- 29:37Webb. Pat Novak is produced and directed by William B. Bussol. Jack
- 29:41Omnigan is played by Tudor Owen. Inspector Helman is played by Raymond Burr.
- 29:45Music was composed and conducted by Basil etlam In our cast where Yvonne Fade,
- 29:51Charles McGraw, her Butterfield and her bellas. This program is being released to
- 29:56our servicemen and women overseas through the worldwide facilities of the arm Forces Radio Service.
- 30:00Be with us again next week, when over most of these same ABC
- 30:04stations we will bring you Hat Novak or Hire. This program came to you
- 30:11from Hollywood. Now a brief reminder, there is no mystery to this statement.
- 30:30Wherever they serve at home or abroad, the men who wear the uniform
- 30:34of the United States are men of whom we can be proud. Army,
- 30:37Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coastguard. All of them serve our country
- 30:42and us with pride and honor. ABC, the American Broadcasting Company, welcome
- 30:51back. Well last you wonder if Novak talked like that all the time.
- 30:55The answers Yes. The stick even continues with poor Rube and Calloway, who
- 31:02when he lands on the ship, is dying and I would be thinking,
- 31:04why have all boats did I have to land on this one? And again
- 31:10we get some great images, such as the idea of a parent who washes
- 31:14their child off and discovers they were ugly anyway, And we also saw a
- 31:18reason why police officers would really hate this program, with Hellman actually roughing up
- 31:26Novak here, which was somewhat unusual even for an era when the police foil
- 31:33didn't get the most respectful portrayal in the first place. All right, well,
- 31:37now we turn to listener comments and feetback and Javier comments on Facebook.
- 31:44Yes, Pat Novak is back. I was missing a truly hard boiled detective,
- 31:48the con that has a constant scowl on his face and you can imagine
- 31:53having four fingers of whiskey for breakfast. Thanks for replaying them, Joan k
- 32:00It's Adam. I just love the Pat Novak character with Jack Webbs and the
- 32:06quips. Jack is so quick to say. I just wish I could come
- 32:09up with him like he did. Well, to be fair, probably even
- 32:13the writer couldn't come with them as quickly as Novak did. That's the advantage
- 32:16of being the writer. You can sit there and think things out and then
- 32:21your characters can say them quickly. And then a comment from Sheila who says,
- 32:24I love this old time show and you're great at your job. Thank
- 32:28you and God bless well. Thank you so much, Sheila. All right,
- 32:31well, that will do it for today. Join us back here tomorrow
- 32:35for the Adventures of Philip Marlow and we will be back on Tuesday. Next
- 32:40Tuesday with Pat Novak for hire. Also coming up next Monday will be again
- 32:46our look at the CBS series Pursuit, so be sure and check that out
- 32:51on next Monday. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at
