- 0:20Speaker 1: Okay, I know what's a Texan Tuesday. Go with me
- 0:24Speaker 1: here for a moment. Good afternoon, and welcome to the.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Program here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
- 0:32Speaker 1: My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with us.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Okay, you hear China Grove in the background there, which,
- 0:36Speaker 2: by the way, is a real town. It's just off
- 0:38Speaker 2: the east side of San Antoni's where East Central High
- 0:40Speaker 2: School is. And I know today is a Texan Tuesday,
- 0:45Speaker 2: and we'll do our requisite Texan Tuesday, you.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Know, return cuts.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But tonight right here in Austin, Texas, USA, Doobie Brothers
- 0:57Speaker 2: along with Santana.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll be there tonight, Yeah, London and I will go.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So but and this, I have not heard that Michael
- 1:07Speaker 2: MacDonald is going to be with the duties on this
- 1:09Speaker 2: particular tour, so it'll probably be more old school Doobie
- 1:14Speaker 2: Brothers like China Grove. So but glad to have you
- 1:18Speaker 2: with us this afternoon. The producer is Jay Herman. Are
- 1:21Speaker 2: you that familiar with the older catalog of Doobie Brothers.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Well, I know this.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I know a couple more ol do Doobie Brothers cuts
- 1:30Speaker 3: that I know. We might get to a little later
- 1:32Speaker 3: on during the show. But I've also gravitated maybe a
- 1:37Speaker 3: little bit towards you know what a full believes in
- 1:40Speaker 3: some of the more yacht rock Doobie brother cuts.
- 1:42Speaker 1: That but later stuff with Michael McDonald. Yeah, that we've that,
- 1:45Speaker 1: We've done a lot of Wednesdays on the program. Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Now, these cuts, you're not gonna hear some of those
- 1:51Speaker 2: on the yacht rock channels. You might hear a couple,
- 1:55Speaker 2: but China Grove does not fit, not fit the profile
- 1:59Speaker 2: of that. I've heard those of you who think that
- 2:01Speaker 2: I think that just about anything is is eligible to
- 2:04Speaker 2: the yacht right, That's not the case.
- 2:06Speaker 1: That's not the case in China Grove would be not
- 2:08Speaker 1: on it.
- 2:09Speaker 2: But we will hear at some point in the two
- 2:12Speaker 2: o'clock hour, when we normally do uh from the immortal
- 2:15Speaker 2: Stevie ray Vaughn, and in the three o'clock hour from
- 2:19Speaker 2: the ICONICQ Willing now soon then in the four o'clock
- 2:22Speaker 2: hour from the King George Strake. But let me let
- 2:25Speaker 2: me tell you what we have going, because it's a
- 2:27Speaker 2: it's pretty hustle and bustle afternoon coming up. We're gonna
- 2:31Speaker 2: hear from Long Worn's head coach, Steve Sarkisha. Now, we've
- 2:33Speaker 2: also had some long WRN football news come down this morning,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and we'll get to that momentarily. We will we'll hear
- 2:40Speaker 2: from Sartuh. We will also hear from Brian Schottenneim or
- 2:45Speaker 2: the Cowboys head coach, on the signing of von Miller,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and as the Cowboys get ready to have joint practices
- 2:52Speaker 2: with the Saints this week, and they'll do that later
- 2:55Speaker 2: in the week in the desert. They'll be out in
- 2:57Speaker 2: Arizona and they play the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So we'll hear from Shady some of that. We will
- 3:03Speaker 2: have inconceivable. We've got that this hour as well. In
- 3:07Speaker 2: the three o'clock hour, we'll have our Tuesdays with Tepper feature.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 3:17Speaker 2: Football magazine, will join us. We'll have a look around
- 3:20Speaker 2: college football and the lone Star State and our continued
- 3:24Speaker 2: high school previews. We have this week. We have five
- 3:27Speaker 2: A so we have five A Division one and five
- 3:28Speaker 2: A Division two, so we'll have which We'll have Jay
- 3:31Speaker 2: Herman's attention, the play by play voice of the bass
- 3:35Speaker 2: drop Bears there in five AD two, so we'll have
- 3:38Speaker 2: that coming up in the three o'clock hour, and then
- 3:41Speaker 2: in the four o'clock hour, we continue our SEC football previews,
- 3:47Speaker 2: visiting with each of the play by play voices of
- 3:52Speaker 2: the Southeastern Conference. So we've done that now for more
- 3:56Speaker 2: than two weeks. We did it in the first week
- 4:00Speaker 2: where we heard from Georgia Bulldog's play by play voice
- 4:04Speaker 2: Jeff Dantler, who is taking the football play by play
- 4:08Speaker 2: duties this fall. We visited him first shot out of
- 4:12Speaker 2: the box, the defending conference champions. Then we looked at
- 4:15Speaker 2: the Arkansas Razorbacks. We visited with Chuck Barrett the second day.
- 4:18Speaker 2: The third day, the Florida Gators a visit with Sean Kelly,
- 4:24Speaker 2: their play by play voice. On Thursday of that first week,
- 4:27Speaker 2: it was Kentucky and Tom Leach, the voice of the Wildcats,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and then on Friday, Neil Price, the voice of the
- 4:32Speaker 2: Misissippi State Bulldogs. By the way, all of these conversations
- 4:36Speaker 2: with the play by play voices were arranged around their schedules.
- 4:40Speaker 2: There was no particular rhyme or reason, but it did
- 4:43Speaker 2: work out really well.
- 4:44Speaker 1: In the final week, which I'll get to in a moment.
- 4:47Speaker 2: The second week, we started off with South Carolina and
- 4:50Speaker 2: todd Ellis their play by play voice on Monday of
- 4:53Speaker 2: last week a week ago. Today it was the Missouri
- 4:56Speaker 2: Tigers and Mike Kelly their play by play voice. On
- 4:59Speaker 2: Wednesday was the LSU Tigers with Chris Blair their play
- 5:02Speaker 2: by play voice. On Thursday and Friday, we went into
- 5:06Speaker 2: the volunteer state. On Thursday it was Vanderbilt with Commodore's
- 5:09Speaker 2: play by play voice Andrew Alla Gretta, and on Friday
- 5:12Speaker 2: the Tennessee Volunteers with Mike Keith their play by play voice.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Then we began the final week of these previews yesterday
- 5:19Speaker 2: by visiting with David Kellam, the play by play voice
- 5:23Speaker 2: of the Old miss Rebels. Today it's the Alabama Crimson
- 5:26Speaker 2: Tide and Chris Stewart, their play by play voice.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Will join us.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Tomorrow will be the Auburn Tigers and we'll visit with
- 5:35Speaker 2: Andy Birchram, their play by play voice. We should also
- 5:38Speaker 2: point out I think we mentioned it yesterday, but.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It bears repeating, and we'll repeat it again later.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Tomorrow will be a shorter program because we have Round
- 5:45Speaker 2: Rock Express Baseball coming your way twelve to fifty pre
- 5:48Speaker 2: game start time the first pitch just halfter one o'clock,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and so we'll have probably about an hour of the
- 5:53Speaker 2: program to bring you, but included in that will be
- 5:57Speaker 2: our conversation with Andy Burchram the preview of the Auburn Tigers.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And then on Thursday and Friday again, it just worked
- 6:02Speaker 2: out this way to where on the last two days
- 6:07Speaker 2: of our SEC previews we will use those to visit
- 6:13Speaker 2: with the play by play voices of the two biggest
- 6:15Speaker 2: rivals for Texas, the Oklahoma Sooners. On Thursday, Toby Roland,
- 6:20Speaker 2: their play by play voice, joins us, and then on Friday,
- 6:23Speaker 2: we'll complete our three week run of previewing SEC football
- 6:27Speaker 2: with the play by play voices Andrew Monico from Texas
- 6:30Speaker 2: A and M.
- 6:31Speaker 1: So we'll have that coming up on Friday, and that'll.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Take us all the way through three weeks previewing every
- 6:36Speaker 2: school in the SEC with all of the other fifteen
- 6:40Speaker 2: play by play voices of the conference.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it feels like a good time to remind folks
- 6:43Speaker 3: if they're coming back from a vacation or missed any
- 6:46Speaker 3: of the preview episodes or preview segments, go to the
- 6:50Speaker 3: iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcast, you can
- 6:53Speaker 3: listen to all of those very interesting conversations. Get you
- 6:56Speaker 3: ready as we count down to football season.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Absolutely so anyway, just wanted to let you let you
- 7:02Speaker 2: know about that.
- 7:04Speaker 1: So we have Also we didn't forget this.
- 7:07Speaker 2: We've been giving away copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
- 7:10Speaker 2: magazine also for these three weeks. It started on the
- 7:13Speaker 2: same day week before last. Three copies a day, one
- 7:16Speaker 2: per hour on the show we're giving away. So we're
- 7:19Speaker 2: on the final stretch run of this, so we'll give
- 7:22Speaker 2: away three copies today, one in this two o'clock hour,
- 7:25Speaker 2: one in the three o'clock hour, and one in the
- 7:27Speaker 2: four o'clock hour.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So stay tuned for the clue on that.
- 7:31Speaker 2: All right, I wanted I want to jump right in
- 7:35Speaker 2: to uh to hearing from Long Run's head coach Steve
- 7:37Speaker 2: Sarkisha and and and first of all that the first
- 7:43Speaker 2: thing I want to play for you is this was
- 7:45Speaker 2: from yesterday after practice. Somebody asked sark about the health
- 7:51Speaker 2: overall for his football team and does he have any concerns?
- 7:55Speaker 4: Not right now, No, I mean I feel good knock
- 7:57Speaker 4: on wood and for as physical as this camp has been,
- 8:02Speaker 4: I think that's encouraging, and I think that's a credit
- 8:05Speaker 4: to the players too, because they're really learning how to practice.
- 8:09Speaker 4: You know, even even when we're going live. I I
- 8:13Speaker 4: see coach Muschamp and Coach Gideon, you know, we're not
- 8:16Speaker 4: cut tackling right now. You know, we're we're really trying
- 8:19Speaker 4: to fit people up and tackle the way in a
- 8:23Speaker 4: physical nature. And and by doing so, when you can
- 8:27Speaker 4: do that, yes we're going to the ground, but you're
- 8:30Speaker 4: minimizing the amount of people on the ground and falling
- 8:33Speaker 4: onto the ground. And so it's a credit to the
- 8:34Speaker 4: players and how we're working and how we're practicing. But
- 8:37Speaker 4: we got to continue to go to another level. You know,
- 8:39Speaker 4: I really feel like, you know, from from a health standpoint,
- 8:43Speaker 4: we've been good. But there's aspects of our game that
- 8:47Speaker 4: we need to improve upon. And I'm not saying that
- 8:50Speaker 4: that could that could put our health in danger, but
- 8:54Speaker 4: our pad level's got to continue to improve. We got
- 8:56Speaker 4: to play lower at lower.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Brandon noticed how he was knocking on would Sark probably
- 9:02Speaker 2: could have knocked a little harder because the word came
- 9:05Speaker 2: down that in last night's practice, Trevor Goosby the long
- 9:09Speaker 2: run preseason all American left tackle sustained an injury. Now
- 9:13Speaker 2: there was a lot of concern when he went down. However,
- 9:16Speaker 2: they had an MRI and the results of the MRI
- 9:19Speaker 2: came back. Nothing season ending, nothing long term, but it
- 9:25Speaker 2: is a bone bruise. So how much time will Gooseby
- 9:29Speaker 2: miss don't know yet. We'll probably hear Sark talking more
- 9:32Speaker 2: about it during the course of the week, but it's
- 9:36Speaker 2: it's at least a sigh of relief that it's not
- 9:40Speaker 2: a huge injury word coming out first reported of by
- 9:43Speaker 2: our friends at on Texas Football, Bobby Burton, Jerry Hammelin
- 9:46Speaker 2: you know, in the group, So thanks to them for that.
- 9:50Speaker 2: So anyway, that's that's where that is. And hopefully Goosby
- 9:54Speaker 2: will I'll be able to bounce back. And again we'll
- 9:58Speaker 2: hear more from Sark a little bit later in the week. Okay,
- 10:01Speaker 2: let's let's go back and hear some more from Sark
- 10:03Speaker 2: and uh and that starts with the opening statement he
- 10:07Speaker 2: made after yesterday's practice, the practice that took place yesterday morning.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Okay, you know that now we got a chance to
- 10:18Speaker 4: uh watch the scrimmage on tape and and really evaluate
- 10:22Speaker 4: and meet with with all three phases. You know, I was,
- 10:24Speaker 4: I was encouraged coming out of coming out of Saturday
- 10:29Speaker 4: with the intent of which we practiced and and naturally
- 10:32Speaker 4: there was some position groups that really got taxed where
- 10:35Speaker 4: some guys had to play a fair amount of plays.
- 10:38Speaker 4: But I but I really thought for the most part,
- 10:40Speaker 4: the guys competed at a high level. You could see
- 10:44Speaker 4: the guys that are really comfortable in all three phases
- 10:47Speaker 4: and that are playing fast, and you see some of
- 10:49Speaker 4: the guys that are are still somewhat of a work
- 10:51Speaker 4: in progress, and that's understandable, you know, a week and
- 10:53Speaker 4: a half into training camp. But I think you know,
- 10:56Speaker 4: one thing we impressed upon the team wherever we were
- 10:59Speaker 4: on Saturday as individuals is not where we have to
- 11:03Speaker 4: be today, tomorrow and each day moving forward, like we
- 11:06Speaker 4: can continue to grow and get better and better and better.
- 11:09Speaker 4: That's not a finished product of a football team that
- 11:11Speaker 4: we had Saturday, And that's not a finished product of
- 11:13Speaker 4: the individuals that we had on Saturday. But it's our
- 11:16Speaker 4: job as coaches to identify the areas where each individual
- 11:20Speaker 4: can improve and where we can improve in all three phases,
- 11:23Speaker 4: and then take the necessary steps to continue to move forward.
- 11:26Speaker 4: And so I thought the team was extremely receptive yesterday
- 11:30Speaker 4: to the coaching points of where we can improve and
- 11:32Speaker 4: areas where we can continue to get better. And they
- 11:35Speaker 4: came out this morning meetings and walked through and really
- 11:39Speaker 4: tried to apply those things, which was encouraging. It was
- 11:41Speaker 4: also encouraging to get some of the guys that were
- 11:43Speaker 4: sick starting to come back, which was good because we
- 11:47Speaker 4: need those bodies, especially in the linebacker.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Room in talking about some of the individual areas of
- 11:55Speaker 2: the football team. And you know, after these practices there's
- 12:00Speaker 2: a lot of conversation about, you know, who's doing well,
- 12:03Speaker 2: what units are doing well. This was kind of an
- 12:05Speaker 2: all encompassing thing about the linebacking corps, the linebackers overall,
- 12:09Speaker 2: and ty Anthony Smith his progress, his development.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I felt like he had his best
- 12:15Speaker 4: practice before he got sick, which that was a little
- 12:19Speaker 4: bit of a setback. He was back out today. You know, naturally,
- 12:22Speaker 4: when when you have the virus that we had going around,
- 12:25Speaker 4: you're gonna lose some weight. And so I think, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 4: for him, is getting his weight back up, but just
- 12:31Speaker 4: getting back into the flow of of practicing and playing again.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, And so with that being the case, that meant
- 12:38Speaker 2: that scrimmage that they had on Saturday where several guys
- 12:40Speaker 2: had to miss, including ty Anthony because of that flu bug.
- 12:43Speaker 2: What about the position battles and who is really stepped
- 12:46Speaker 2: forward at that point.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I don't know if, like anybody like you secured a
- 12:51Speaker 4: position or not. You know, we we you know, going
- 12:54Speaker 4: back at the tape and looking at the amount of
- 12:56Speaker 4: reps and different things, like like on the old line,
- 12:59Speaker 4: Laura Seymour had had a little bit of an injury hiccup,
- 13:02Speaker 4: nothing long term, but he only got a chance to
- 13:05Speaker 4: play eleven plays of real live football. So Dylan Sikorski
- 13:09Speaker 4: got a lot more reps and he showed he showed
- 13:12Speaker 4: a lot of progress there. I really think Kobe Black
- 13:14Speaker 4: had a heck of a scrimmage at safety and that
- 13:16Speaker 4: was important for us because that's been his first real
- 13:19Speaker 4: live action of playing safety. And uh, you know, I'll
- 13:23Speaker 4: tell you like that the first two of the first
- 13:25Speaker 4: three plays of the scrimmage, Hollywood gets out on a
- 13:29Speaker 4: run and Jonah Williams makes a really good tackle you know,
- 13:33Speaker 4: downfield in the open field, which is important for Jonah
- 13:35Speaker 4: coming off the shoulder. I think a couple plays later
- 13:38Speaker 4: where Leak Brown gets in the open field, Kobe Black
- 13:41Speaker 4: makes a really good tackle. So from from a head
- 13:43Speaker 4: coach's perspective, I'm watching that like that's a win for Texas.
- 13:47Speaker 4: From an offensive coordinator's perspective, I expect Hollywood and Raleik
- 13:50Speaker 4: to make those guys miss and but that's the challenge
- 13:52Speaker 4: of a scrimmage, right You're trying to find the positives
- 13:54Speaker 4: in both sides, but also where where can we improve?
- 13:58Speaker 2: So there were guys who were banged up and guys
- 14:02Speaker 2: who had that flu bug sweeping through the team.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And Stark said after the scrimmage on Saturday.
- 14:08Speaker 2: There might be more guys who might be out once
- 14:12Speaker 2: they came back from the day off and got into
- 14:15Speaker 2: the practices yesterday. So in doing a little bit of
- 14:18Speaker 2: roll call guys who missed, guys who've come back.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Yeah, so this morning, geez, I gotta think this through.
- 14:25Speaker 4: There's a lot of movie parts here. Just as Terry
- 14:28Speaker 4: was back out there for sure, Brad Spence was back
- 14:30Speaker 4: out there, Ty Anthony was back out there. I feel
- 14:37Speaker 4: like I missus. John Meredith was back out there today.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Rahem Biles not yet he was not back out there.
- 14:46Speaker 4: I don't know, I could be missing somebody, and sorry,
- 14:48Speaker 4: I was off the top of my head, all right,
- 14:50Speaker 4: all right?
- 14:50Speaker 2: And then one more remember this guy when last we
- 14:54Speaker 2: saw him competitively in games, we saw him playing you know, well,
- 15:00Speaker 2: we saw him playing baseball, Joonah Williams. He'd had a
- 15:02Speaker 2: little bit of that knee issue as well. But Jonah
- 15:05Speaker 2: Williams has kind of stepped up a little bit, and
- 15:07Speaker 2: Sark had some nice words to say about him.
- 15:10Speaker 4: For Jonah, you know, I think I think one thing
- 15:12Speaker 4: was when we made the decision our staff, the baseball staff,
- 15:17Speaker 4: Jonah and his family to have the surgery when he
- 15:20Speaker 4: had it, you know, which obviously sacrificed the remainder of
- 15:24Speaker 4: his baseball season. That was somewhat strategic to get him
- 15:27Speaker 4: ready for training camp because that allowed the rehab time
- 15:31Speaker 4: to happen during the spring. That allowed for June and
- 15:36Speaker 4: July for him to start kind of our PRP activities,
- 15:39Speaker 4: the strength and conditioning program, the running with coach Beckton,
- 15:42Speaker 4: and that allowed him to be fully cleared for training
- 15:45Speaker 4: camp when we got out. And you know, we knew
- 15:49Speaker 4: early on there might be some hesitation, you know, anytime
- 15:52Speaker 4: you have a shoulder surgery. It's like, can I really
- 15:55Speaker 4: trust this thing to tackle and to be physical in
- 15:57Speaker 4: the way I need to play? And early on I
- 15:59Speaker 4: think we felt some of that hesitation, but I think
- 16:02Speaker 4: his trajectory has looked like this and that's a positive.
- 16:05Speaker 4: And so the fact that he wasn't just a reckless
- 16:10Speaker 4: hitting everything in site day one was not so alarming
- 16:14Speaker 4: to the fact that I think what we saw Saturday
- 16:17Speaker 4: was a guy who was willing to get people on
- 16:19Speaker 4: the ground and to tackle. But as we saw, like
- 16:22Speaker 4: I know, you guys probably saw the one highlight. The
- 16:24Speaker 4: range that he has at safety is real, you know.
- 16:27Speaker 4: I mean, he's a he's an outfielder in baseball. He
- 16:29Speaker 4: can track the ball and so the interception that he
- 16:31Speaker 4: made was was a very instinctual play. But you saw
- 16:35Speaker 4: the ball skills, it was natural, the timing to jump
- 16:37Speaker 4: to make that play, those are all, you know, just
- 16:40Speaker 4: natural instincts that in skill set that he has.
- 16:44Speaker 2: So there are some conversation from long wrn's head coach,
- 16:47Speaker 2: Steve Sarcasian, and again the headline story of the day
- 16:51Speaker 2: is the MRI that came back on Trevor Goosby, who
- 16:55Speaker 2: was injured in practice last night. They were in shells
- 16:58Speaker 2: last night, the helmets and shoulder pad and shorts, and
- 17:01Speaker 2: Gooseby went down with a knee injury. I think they
- 17:04Speaker 2: said left Me went down with a knee injury. Turned
- 17:07Speaker 2: out after an MRI. It's a bone bruise, nothing more
- 17:10Speaker 2: serious than that. It's enough that it's kind of painful,
- 17:13Speaker 2: and it'll keep them out of some practices and we'll
- 17:16Speaker 2: see what it's like going up to the season opener,
- 17:19Speaker 2: but it's not expected to be anything long term, and
- 17:22Speaker 2: that is a relief, all right, speaking of guys in
- 17:26Speaker 2: the interior line and even just some guys along the
- 17:30Speaker 2: offensive front or the defensive front. The Cowboys have added
- 17:36Speaker 2: to their hall by adding von Miller. We're gonna get
- 17:38Speaker 2: Brian Schoenheimer talk about that, along with some other topics
- 17:41Speaker 2: as well. When we continue here on a Texan Tuesday
- 17:44Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Zone, Little Baby less a marxim roll. Last I did.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Say that it is a tex On Tuesday, which means
- 17:57Speaker 2: at some point in the program in the four o'clock hour,
- 17:59Speaker 2: we'll bump back from a break with the King George
- 18:01Speaker 2: straight in the three o'clock hour, will be from the
- 18:03Speaker 2: iconic Willie Nelson and here in the two o'clock hour,
- 18:06Speaker 2: the immortal Stevie ray Vaughn.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Here's honey Bee, which has a real classic rock feel
- 18:12Speaker 3: to it.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I suppose it would have fit better with the Texan.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Segment, you know, with Demiko's swarm, but it's it's a
- 18:18Speaker 3: song that I really loved.
- 18:19Speaker 2: His Well, the league right into Dallas Cowboys sound Cowboys
- 18:23Speaker 2: making the headlines yesterday by signing Von Miller, the DeSoto,
- 18:26Speaker 2: Texas native. It's about twenty miles if you go from
- 18:30Speaker 2: De Soto and you just go up quickly to Ie
- 18:32Speaker 2: twenty and cut across the bottom part of southwest Dallas
- 18:35Speaker 2: County and then go up three sixty once you get
- 18:36Speaker 2: into Terrn County right there, Jerry World, so not far
- 18:39Speaker 2: about twenty minutes.
- 18:40Speaker 1: They're just about twenty minutes.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And Brian chom Ember asked about the addition of von
- 18:44Speaker 2: Miller to the team.
- 18:46Speaker 5: You know, number one, always trying to find a competitive
- 18:50Speaker 5: addition to our football team. We say it all the time,
- 18:53Speaker 5: twenty four to seven, three sixty five.
- 18:56Speaker 1: What I love about Von is we've got a lot of.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Inside information knowledge about him as a player, certainly, what
- 19:05Speaker 5: he's accomplished is incredible, but what you hear about him
- 19:07Speaker 5: as a teammate is even more incredible. And my few
- 19:11Speaker 5: conversations with him, he's really excited about being part of
- 19:15Speaker 5: what we're building here, h and he's going to add.
- 19:18Speaker 1: A lot, not just on the field, but off the
- 19:20Speaker 1: field as well.
- 19:21Speaker 5: And I think we're creating competition at a spot that
- 19:25Speaker 5: is good in no way, shape or form. Is this
- 19:29Speaker 5: where he comes in and takes over any of that?
- 19:31Speaker 5: You know, He's just another really good player that we're
- 19:33Speaker 5: adding to the edition of Rashaan Gary Donman Azaraku. You know
- 19:37Speaker 5: Malachi Lawrence, James Houston played great the other night, Sam Williams,
- 19:41Speaker 5: you know, Tea Weed, you know Isaiah Ann Marris. It's
- 19:44Speaker 5: deep and you can never have enough pass rushers.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Next shot, he was asked about what are the things
- 19:50Speaker 2: that really make von Miller a fit?
- 19:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I think him talking about how much he can
- 19:56Speaker 5: help you know, some of these young guys.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Let's be honest.
- 19:58Speaker 5: You know, Malachi's young, pla, He's he's still a young player.
- 20:02Speaker 5: The influence sitting in meetings with him and watching film
- 20:07Speaker 5: that's really powerful. And the guy has no ego, he
- 20:11Speaker 5: wants to win. He's a huge fan of the Cowboys,
- 20:13Speaker 5: obviously growing up in Texas.
- 20:15Speaker 1: And I know he's told you guys about his dad,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and you know this is a's home.
- 20:20Speaker 5: So you know, very very excited to add him to
- 20:23Speaker 5: our football team and look forward to getting him here
- 20:28Speaker 5: and getting him some work.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Von Miller is thirty seven. He's got Super Bowl.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Rings, as we know with Denver and of course with
- 20:37Speaker 2: the Rams as well. So he's been around a while.
- 20:40Speaker 2: So what does he still have in the tank? Yeah,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I mean I think you look at it. You know,
- 20:44Speaker 2: he understands the game. The football intellect intelligence is pretty
- 20:50Speaker 2: you know, top tier. The production last year was really real.
- 20:55Speaker 2: You know, nine sacks, I mean that's hard to do
- 20:58Speaker 2: at this level.
- 20:59Speaker 5: But again, he still got first step quickness, he still
- 21:02Speaker 5: understands angles, he's still got a great assortment of counter moves.
- 21:06Speaker 5: And again, our plan to use him, we think will
- 21:10Speaker 5: help him be very functional. You know, he's not going
- 21:13Speaker 5: to play sixty plays a game. That's not what we're
- 21:15Speaker 5: looking for. But he's going to get the snaps that
- 21:18Speaker 5: he gets and he's gonna make us, make us better,
- 21:20Speaker 5: and hopefully we are playing a lot of games with
- 21:22Speaker 5: the lead and he along with those other guys I
- 21:24Speaker 5: mentioned in that.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Room, will go out there and hunt together.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Now in these earlier days von Beller, you know, going
- 21:31Speaker 2: all the way back to his time at Texas A
- 21:33Speaker 2: and M. Probably did so at De Soto as well,
- 21:34Speaker 2: but at Texas A and M, and then in his
- 21:37Speaker 2: earlier NFL seasons with Denver, and then obviously with Rams,
- 21:44Speaker 2: and then with Buffalo, and then he last year's with
- 21:47Speaker 2: the Commanders, he had what nine sacks with the Commanders
- 21:50Speaker 2: last year?
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what did you heard him talk about that
- 21:52Speaker 3: in the last cup. But he still has in the
- 21:54Speaker 3: tank that production is is real, even if the Commander's
- 21:57Speaker 3: defense last year was not so.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Yeah, throughout his time, in addition of the sacks, he
- 22:04Speaker 2: also in his career had employed the ability to drop
- 22:08Speaker 2: in the past coverage. But now later in his career,
- 22:12Speaker 2: longer in the tooth, does Schottenheimer c Miller is more
- 22:16Speaker 2: of a pure pass rusher and not so much dropping
- 22:19Speaker 2: in coverage.
- 22:21Speaker 5: I mean, all these guys have to drop a little bit,
- 22:23Speaker 5: and I think you know that's that's part of playing
- 22:25Speaker 5: the three four.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But uh CP and I are pretty smart.
- 22:28Speaker 5: We're not gonna drop guys that are really good at
- 22:30Speaker 5: chasing the passer. But that's something that you have to
- 22:33Speaker 5: do occasionally in the three four to keep the offense guessing.
- 22:35Speaker 5: But you know, again, I think you know, you listen
- 22:39Speaker 5: to you know, CP, the understanding of him he's trained
- 22:42Speaker 5: with BT. Toalmbot Vahn, of course he's trained with BT.
- 22:44Speaker 5: And you know, we're we're really excited.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And one thing that Schottenheimer was asked about is you
- 22:52Speaker 2: hear him talk about the team being aligned, being on
- 22:56Speaker 2: the same page.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Uh.
- 22:58Speaker 2: He is a man who really values the communication with
- 23:04Speaker 2: his players, ongoing conversations after meetings, during meetings, before practice,
- 23:10Speaker 2: after practice, in other words, total transparency. So it might
- 23:14Speaker 2: be a fair question to ask Shoddy, does he talk
- 23:18Speaker 2: to his guys both in the defensive line room and
- 23:22Speaker 2: the line backing room before he makes a signing like
- 23:26Speaker 2: this as a staff, we do, you know, And again,
- 23:29Speaker 2: you know, like everyone should be excited that we're adding
- 23:31Speaker 2: a great teammate, a very talented player that's accomplished what
- 23:35Speaker 2: he's accomplished.
- 23:37Speaker 1: You know, if they don't want.
- 23:39Speaker 5: To compete every day, they're not in the right organization.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Because that's what we're looking to do. We're looking to build.
- 23:44Speaker 5: But the conversations that we're had, the guys understand, they
- 23:48Speaker 5: get it, and again, I think it's going to bring
- 23:50Speaker 5: the best out of everybody.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Now, one thing that Brian Schottenheimer has been on board with,
- 23:57Speaker 2: and I'm not saying this with cynicism, I'm saying this
- 24:00Speaker 2: because of the reality, is that he's aligned with Jerry Jones. Now,
- 24:05Speaker 2: if you're any NFL coach, you better be aligned with
- 24:08Speaker 2: your owner. In other words, on the same page with
- 24:12Speaker 2: who you're trying to sign, and might you sign this
- 24:15Speaker 2: guy or that guy, or no, we're not signing anybody,
- 24:18Speaker 2: or we've got to make this roster move. The owner
- 24:21Speaker 2: has his say, and as we know, Jerry Jones has
- 24:25Speaker 2: more of a say apparently than most owners in the league.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Or let's put better, he has more of an audible
- 24:33Speaker 2: say that will all of us hear about than a
- 24:36Speaker 2: lot of other owners around the National Football League. Remember
- 24:40Speaker 2: back in the pre training camp press conference, Jerry does
- 24:45Speaker 2: you know his big state of the team address where he,
- 24:51Speaker 2: you know, talks about where things are and where they're going.
- 24:54Speaker 2: And now he has dreams and visions and plans and
- 24:57Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff for his team being a
- 24:58Speaker 2: Super Bowl contender, says he goes into that every year
- 25:01Speaker 2: with the fullest belief and full of confidence that they're
- 25:06Speaker 2: going to get that done.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I'm sure he does. He does.
- 25:09Speaker 2: He's definitely full of lots of things, full of he's
- 25:12Speaker 2: full of the reasoning and confidence and all that kind
- 25:16Speaker 2: of stuff. The other thing that came from that training
- 25:20Speaker 2: camp opening press conference last month was, and I don't
- 25:27Speaker 2: remember exactly how it came up, whether a person asked
- 25:30Speaker 2: Jerry if he was content to stand pat or might
- 25:36Speaker 2: he be willing to make a deal if it helped
- 25:41Speaker 2: the team, and he said yes, absolutely, if.
- 25:44Speaker 1: We're out there, we're looking.
- 25:47Speaker 2: I think he was trying to get the message across
- 25:49Speaker 2: that they weren't just sitting back going Okay, here's our team, Shotty,
- 25:52Speaker 2: go do it. Let's get to the super Bowl. I
- 25:54Speaker 2: think he was trying to get the message across that
- 25:56Speaker 2: that's not the mindset that would be willing to make
- 26:02Speaker 2: a roster move, make a tray, make a free agent
- 26:06Speaker 2: signing if it meant improving their chances to make a
- 26:11Speaker 2: deep run in the postseason.
- 26:13Speaker 1: So he was asked.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Jerry was asked yesterday if this von Miller signing is
- 26:20Speaker 2: what he was kind of referring to, not that he
- 26:22Speaker 2: had von Miller in mine, although I will tell you this,
- 26:25Speaker 2: this has kind of been There's been some kind of
- 26:27Speaker 2: there was some courting between the two sides that goes
- 26:30Speaker 2: back a few weeks and no Todd Archer, who covers
- 26:34Speaker 2: the Cowboys Dallas Cowboys dot Com, had reported on that
- 26:37Speaker 2: that there had been on again, off again kind of courting,
- 26:43Speaker 2: you know, comment and response even from von Miller during
- 26:48Speaker 2: all of this in the time leading up to the
- 26:51Speaker 2: actual signing. So with that in mind, Jerry was asked,
- 26:57Speaker 2: is this what he had in mind? And it will
- 27:00Speaker 2: be more on the horizon.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Sit in a substantive trade off for kind of leaders
- 27:03Speaker 6: taking about the cross conference.
- 27:05Speaker 7: Yes, yes, if we had an opportunity, jail would be
- 27:08Speaker 7: because the morbleweed and see thing, and it says much.
- 27:10Speaker 1: About what I think of where we are.
- 27:14Speaker 7: Which I'm more positive than when we started camp, seriously
- 27:17Speaker 7: about what our chances are. And so I think if
- 27:21Speaker 7: we saw an opportunity to take a little in the
- 27:25Speaker 7: future and put it on this team, I'd do it.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Okay, So there it is.
- 27:30Speaker 2: If we saw an opportunity to help the future this
- 27:33Speaker 2: team that would help us do something on that.
- 27:36Speaker 1: So I understand.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Very jaded and cowboy fans with their own version of
- 27:45Speaker 2: PTSD when it comes to NFL fandom. We just heard
- 27:47Speaker 2: from from one of those yesterday, our own Cameron Parker,
- 27:50Speaker 2: who's kind of out on them right now until they
- 27:53Speaker 2: prove to at least get to the NFC Championship game,
- 27:57Speaker 2: which they haven't done since nineteen ninety five, that he's
- 27:59Speaker 2: not interested. Even then watching them, he's still feeling that way.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You're not quite that far out on the Commanders, are you.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I'm not. I'm not out on the Commander fandom.
- 28:09Speaker 3: I mean, I just have low lowered my expectations for
- 28:13Speaker 3: the season significantly. We talked about the Longhorns maybe breathing
- 28:17Speaker 3: a sigh of relief on their left tackle. The Commander
- 28:19Speaker 3: is not so fortunate and that's a big deal.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Losing Marcus Mariota is that hurts well?
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, losing Laramie Tunzel for the same I was worried about.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well you made reference yesterday to Mariota with
- 28:33Speaker 2: good reason, by the way, and how long is he
- 28:35Speaker 2: supposed to be out?
- 28:36Speaker 1: I'm not sure they fully know yet.
- 28:40Speaker 3: I think it was one of those deals where, uh,
- 28:43Speaker 3: it's it's a non it's a non contact injury. They're
- 28:47Speaker 3: calling it a sprain. So he's out for the preseason.
- 28:50Speaker 3: They don't know how long this will linger into the
- 28:53Speaker 3: regular season.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so we'll see. But in any event,
- 28:57Speaker 2: Jerry Jones, you heard him say it. For those of
- 29:00Speaker 2: you who are kind of jaded cowboy fans and are
- 29:03Speaker 2: kind of fed up with this, sounds like Jerry's approaching
- 29:08Speaker 2: things a little differently, and the proof is in the pudding.
- 29:12Speaker 2: But the von Miller signing may be one of those
- 29:15Speaker 2: things that moves it in the right direction. We'll see,
- 29:17Speaker 2: all right. Coming up next is inconceivable. But before we
- 29:21Speaker 2: do that, we're gonna give away a copy of Dave
- 29:23Speaker 2: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. And the way we're gonna do
- 29:26Speaker 2: that today, we're gonna start with a random intrig b
- 29:30Speaker 2: entry number. Let's say number nine, as the Beatles would say,
- 29:37Speaker 2: number nine. Number nine be the ninth person on the
- 29:41Speaker 2: talk back line. So what you do is you download
- 29:44Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app. It's really easy to download and it's free.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Just download it onto your smartphone, whether it's an iPhone
- 29:51Speaker 2: or an Android. Then you do a search for AM
- 29:54Speaker 2: thirteen under the zone in your search part. It'll pop
- 29:56Speaker 2: straight up, and then when it does, you'll see a
- 29:58Speaker 2: red button with a white microphone. Our number two here
- 30:04Speaker 2: on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred one. Yes, I know
- 30:06Speaker 2: it's a Texan Tuesday, but as I said first hour,
- 30:10Speaker 2: we'll have our usual bump backs like Willie Nelson coming
- 30:13Speaker 2: up in a few minutes. But tonight, the Doobie Brothers
- 30:16Speaker 2: are in town as well as Santana at Moody Center,
- 30:19Speaker 2: so I'm looking forward to being out there for that.
- 30:22Speaker 2: This is one of their standards, and I think it's
- 30:24Speaker 2: on their set list. It should be listening to music
- 30:26Speaker 2: is one of the great ones. It's one of the
- 30:28Speaker 2: earlier versions, earlier renditions of a song by the Doobie Brothers.
- 30:34Speaker 1: So glad to have you with us.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Our number two here coming up in a few minutes
- 30:38Speaker 2: will be Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave
- 30:41Speaker 2: Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Our Tuesdays with Tep feature. I've
- 30:46Speaker 2: got a couple of questions to ask him with regard
- 30:52Speaker 2: to what's online at Texas Football dot com. Of course,
- 30:54Speaker 2: we're giving away the magazines, and we gave away a
- 30:57Speaker 2: magazine and our number one, we'll give away one with
- 30:59Speaker 2: a trivia question this hour. We'll do that a little
- 31:03Speaker 2: bit later on this hour. But they also have a
- 31:07Speaker 2: very fine website at Texas Football dot com. There are
- 31:09Speaker 2: some things you can read online there, and there's some
- 31:11Speaker 2: things that are for subscribers only. But the subscription, when
- 31:15Speaker 2: you did it, when you get it also includes the
- 31:18Speaker 2: magazine h the actual you know, uh in your hands
- 31:22Speaker 2: magazine copy, physical copy and access to their things and
- 31:27Speaker 2: a lot of the high school football content as well.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So anyway, we'll visit with TEP coming up in just
- 31:33Speaker 2: a few moments on that I did want to get
- 31:38Speaker 2: to and and uh, this was just to get to
- 31:43Speaker 2: a little bit more from Logorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian,
- 31:46Speaker 2: And so I want to go ahead and let you
- 31:49Speaker 2: hear from it now. This is after practice yesterday, and
- 31:51Speaker 2: of course the headline they came out this morning was
- 31:54Speaker 2: the injury sustained by Trevor Gooseby, the Loghorns left tackle
- 31:58Speaker 2: on the offensive front, the pre he's an All American
- 32:01Speaker 2: knee injury and practice last night they were in helmet
- 32:04Speaker 2: shoulder pads and shorts, but an MRI I revealed no
- 32:10Speaker 2: structural damage anything like that. There was a bone bruise,
- 32:13Speaker 2: but nothing more serious than that. So that's a good sign.
- 32:16Speaker 2: And we'll see how that affects on down the road.
- 32:19Speaker 2: And I would imagine as we go on further through
- 32:21Speaker 2: the week we'll hear more from Sark about that. But
- 32:23Speaker 2: in terms of hearing from Sark, one thing he's asked
- 32:28Speaker 2: about was the depth of the position of wide receiver,
- 32:31Speaker 2: what with the addition of Cam Coleman there, having him
- 32:34Speaker 2: a mostly back, having Ryan wing go back, having several
- 32:37Speaker 2: guys there, and also the play calling element here.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I think ultimately the players kind of determine that, you know,
- 32:44Speaker 4: I to go and say, hey, I want to play
- 32:46Speaker 4: seven guys or whatever the number is. They earn that trust,
- 32:50Speaker 4: you know, of what the capacity is in which we
- 32:52Speaker 4: can play them if they're in the ballgame, and you
- 32:55Speaker 4: know we obviously we feel really comfortable, you know, the
- 32:59Speaker 4: first three guys naturally, I think Dyala McCutcheon has kind
- 33:02Speaker 4: of earned our trust. He knows what we do, how
- 33:04Speaker 4: we do, why we do. I think clik Lockett has
- 33:06Speaker 4: really come a long way to get himself into a
- 33:09Speaker 4: position where we feel like, hey, you know, we're running
- 33:11Speaker 4: him a lot right now because he's playing a ton
- 33:13Speaker 4: of special teams, which is great for him, So we
- 33:15Speaker 4: had to manage his kind of rep count. But he's
- 33:18Speaker 4: earned that trust. I think Sterling bull Culter is a
- 33:20Speaker 4: guy that knows systematically what we do, and so there's
- 33:24Speaker 4: some trust there. I think of the young guys, Jermaine
- 33:26Speaker 4: Burton is a guy that has shown can play all
- 33:29Speaker 4: three positions. I think he had four catches Saturday. Three
- 33:33Speaker 4: of those four came on third down conversions. And so
- 33:35Speaker 4: you're talking about earning trust, it's making those plays on
- 33:37Speaker 4: those critical downs as critical. And then with Cohen and Chris,
- 33:42Speaker 4: I think one of the big things is we know
- 33:43Speaker 4: the skill set and now let's get in their comfort
- 33:45Speaker 4: level systematically with what they do. But both those guys
- 33:48Speaker 4: are very talented. They're very fast.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Next, Sark was asked about that that gigantic e word expectations,
- 33:56Speaker 2: and with the expectations come the rank. It came out yesterday,
- 34:01Speaker 2: the Texas is ranked fifth in the AP preseason poll.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Long words did not accrue a single first place vote.
- 34:07Speaker 2: They're number five in the BALLOTY now at the time
- 34:09Speaker 2: that Sark was asked this question, the poll had not
- 34:12Speaker 2: yet come out. Nevertheless, the point is well made when
- 34:15Speaker 2: he was asked, does he really care that much about
- 34:16Speaker 2: the polls?
- 34:17Speaker 4: No, and that's no disrespect to anybody here who votes, okay,
- 34:24Speaker 4: and anybody out there who votes quite quite frankly, it
- 34:27Speaker 4: just you know this, the era of college football has changed,
- 34:30Speaker 4: you know, And I'm not naive to think that human
- 34:34Speaker 4: nature is human nature, and I would imagine to some degree,
- 34:38Speaker 4: the CFP, when it starts coming down to it, I'm
- 34:41Speaker 4: sure looks at the polls as one of the barometers
- 34:44Speaker 4: to say, you know, what does the media think of
- 34:46Speaker 4: the teams that are playing right now. But that's a
- 34:49Speaker 4: piece of it. You know. Years ago that was the
- 34:51Speaker 4: determining factor. There was two poles. There was a coach's poll,
- 34:54Speaker 4: the AP poll, and that determined the national champion. Different today.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I love the polls for this. I love the polls
- 35:02Speaker 4: for college football, for the fans, for the excitement, for
- 35:06Speaker 4: the marquee matchups, for all those things. I love the
- 35:08Speaker 4: polls for all that. But the polls internally, they just
- 35:11Speaker 4: don't matter. They're really irrelevant, and I think we've gotten
- 35:14Speaker 4: to a point now as a team to understand that
- 35:17Speaker 4: what matters is how we play each and every Saturday,
- 35:19Speaker 4: and the preparation and the intent in the work that
- 35:23Speaker 4: we do to get ready to play, and then ultimately
- 35:25Speaker 4: the way we play. That's ultimately what matters. You know,
- 35:28Speaker 4: the scoreboard matters now more than ever, which is a
- 35:31Speaker 4: crazy thing to say that that's ultimately what matters.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Stark was asked about the newcomers and how they continue
- 35:37Speaker 2: to develop, not just the incoming freshmen but also those
- 35:40Speaker 2: who arrive via the portal, and is he comfortable in
- 35:45Speaker 2: terms of the play calling that involves his playmakers.
- 35:48Speaker 4: You know, we have a system obviously here that we
- 35:51Speaker 4: believe in, and that system is kind of broad scope,
- 35:57Speaker 4: and then what we try to do is identify what
- 36:00Speaker 4: the guys do well, and then we try to pair
- 36:02Speaker 4: that system and to say, okay, this is kind of
- 36:03Speaker 4: who we are right now, and then how do we
- 36:06Speaker 4: as the season goes, build off of that and adjust
- 36:09Speaker 4: to these guys. And so I do think it's very important.
- 36:12Speaker 4: You know, spring was one thing, someone was another, But
- 36:14Speaker 4: I do think it's very important now in training camp
- 36:16Speaker 4: to really identify the strengths and weaknesses of these guys,
- 36:21Speaker 4: and and I think that that that we're doing a
- 36:23Speaker 4: good job of that right now. We're fortunate these guys
- 36:26Speaker 4: are talented, they are they've they've got good work ethic,
- 36:29Speaker 4: they want to be really good as a team, and
- 36:32Speaker 4: they want to be really good as individuals, and they
- 36:34Speaker 4: want to contribute to the team. And so now it's
- 36:36Speaker 4: identifying those things. And again, Saturday was not a scheme,
- 36:41Speaker 4: game plan, scrimmage. It was let's go spot the ball,
- 36:44Speaker 4: let's go play, and let's go see how certain guys
- 36:46Speaker 4: respond to that. I was encouraged by the response of
- 36:50Speaker 4: the of a lot of the guys that were the
- 36:51Speaker 4: new faces Hollywood releak. I that those guys played well.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Derek Cooper played well. I Cam made two tremendous catches,
- 36:58Speaker 4: you know, in the in the in the image. I
- 37:00Speaker 4: think we're starting to get a really good understanding of
- 37:02Speaker 4: Michael Musonis, of who he is and how that combination
- 37:06Speaker 4: works at tight end. We touched on, we touched on
- 37:09Speaker 4: the guard position. I think we have a really good
- 37:11Speaker 4: understanding who Melvin Siani is right now, Like, this guy's
- 37:15Speaker 4: a tough ass. Honestly, I'll be quite frank with everybody.
- 37:18Speaker 4: I thought I was getting a pass protector when we
- 37:20Speaker 4: recruited him. I'm getting a tough ass run blocker who
- 37:23Speaker 4: is a good pass protector. And that's encouraging for us
- 37:26Speaker 4: because clearly we know how important the run game is
- 37:29Speaker 4: going to be for us. So to your point, taking
- 37:32Speaker 4: in this information and then how do we start to
- 37:35Speaker 4: apply it? Probably starting next week is going to be
- 37:37Speaker 4: is going to be critical, but we got to keep
- 37:39Speaker 4: putting them in positions so that we can keep gathering
- 37:41Speaker 4: that information.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Dar next was asked about the position battles at quarterback.
- 37:46Speaker 1: No, not for the starter.
- 37:47Speaker 2: We know who the starter is, the backup guys, and
- 37:51Speaker 2: you know between kJ Lacey and Dia Belle and the
- 37:53Speaker 2: other guys, and what that has been like in terms
- 37:56Speaker 2: of the battle for the depth behind arch Manning at quarterback.
- 38:00Speaker 4: I mean, I feel very good about kJ. He's doing
- 38:02Speaker 4: some really good things. But I will say Dia is
- 38:06Speaker 4: as far along, or maybe even further along than anybody
- 38:09Speaker 4: we've had in that role, and that's a credit to him.
- 38:13Speaker 4: You know, this guy's got an innate feel for the game.
- 38:16Speaker 4: He is a natural passer, He's got great leadership qualities
- 38:20Speaker 4: and is instinctual and so he did things Saturday that
- 38:23Speaker 4: we're really really encouraging for us, and so Hey as
- 38:25Speaker 4: always at that position, that's always kind of a work
- 38:28Speaker 4: in progress as we go and we try to you know,
- 38:32Speaker 4: when you're a backup or when you're a third string guy,
- 38:35Speaker 4: the starter kind of always feels that level of intensity
- 38:37Speaker 4: and pressure to go perform every every Saturday. We have
- 38:41Speaker 4: to find ways to keep that pressure on them because
- 38:43Speaker 4: that's that competitive spirit that they have to have. And
- 38:45Speaker 4: so I think as the season goes on, keep pushing
- 38:48Speaker 4: those guys to become the best that they can become,
- 38:50Speaker 4: so that if knock on woods something were to happen,
- 38:53Speaker 4: that that guy's ready to go in those intense moments,
- 38:55Speaker 4: you know. I mean I think Matt Caldwell was a
- 38:57Speaker 4: great example of that last year. I mean, he got
- 39:00Speaker 4: into action in two critical moments, you know, at Florida
- 39:03Speaker 4: has a huge completion of Ryan Wingo at Mississippi State
- 39:06Speaker 4: throws a touchdown to Emmitt Mosey. He was ready for
- 39:08Speaker 4: the moment, and I think that's part of that preparation
- 39:11Speaker 4: that we do with those guys. So it's I know,
- 39:13Speaker 4: we always want to focus on Arch and the starter.
- 39:15Speaker 4: We don't not coach those other guys. We coach them
- 39:18Speaker 4: really hard every day too.
- 39:19Speaker 2: We'll hear's some more from scarc a little bit later
- 39:21Speaker 2: on this hour, as well as some more from Brian Schottneimer.
- 39:24Speaker 2: But up next our Tuesdays with Tep conversation with Greg Tepper,
- 39:29Speaker 2: editor in chief of Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine. When
- 39:32Speaker 2: we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
- 39:34Speaker 2: in the iHeartRadio app, It's a tax on Tuesday here
- 39:40Speaker 2: on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. As we say,
- 39:42Speaker 2: always in the two o'clock hour, one of our return
- 39:46Speaker 2: cuts is from the immortal Stevie Raygone. In the four
- 39:48Speaker 2: o'clock hour we hear from the King George Strait, but
- 39:51Speaker 2: always in the three o'clock hour the iconic Willie Nelson.
- 39:54Speaker 2: And on Tuesdays in the three o'clock hour, it's our
- 39:57Speaker 2: Tuesdays with Tip feature with Greg Temper, the editor in
- 40:01Speaker 2: chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, who can probably
- 40:05Speaker 2: identify with this particular Willie Nelson cover of the classic
- 40:10Speaker 2: all of Me, Which is Must, Which is must be?
- 40:13Speaker 2: How you feel right toward the end a public when
- 40:16Speaker 2: you get to publication time, when everybody's pulling on you
- 40:20Speaker 2: to get it the magazine to the finish line before
- 40:23Speaker 2: you finally get Am I right about that?
- 40:25Speaker 1: Yes?
- 40:26Speaker 6: Yes, it's it's a whole effort, and it's a whole
- 40:30Speaker 6: body effort there that like you know, those final weeks
- 40:34Speaker 6: before you send the press, you're exhausted.
- 40:37Speaker 1: You're just trying to get.
- 40:38Speaker 6: Past the finish line and then you can relax, and
- 40:41Speaker 6: then you can relax. But what's funny is that now,
- 40:45Speaker 6: and I've made this comment before because my wife is
- 40:47Speaker 6: an elementary school teacher, and so we kind of actually
- 40:52Speaker 6: have stumbled into a pair of careers. Where are our
- 40:57Speaker 6: schedules kind of line up? Because we send the press
- 41:00Speaker 6: around the last day of school and now it's back
- 41:03Speaker 6: to school. My boys are already back in school. Uh,
- 41:05Speaker 6: but it's it's it's about to get busy for for
- 41:08Speaker 6: me too. So like summer vacation is over, so uh,
- 41:12Speaker 6: once again all of me will be required for another
- 41:14Speaker 6: high school football season.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Are both of your boys now in school? Your youngest Steven.
- 41:20Speaker 6: Max is in pre K, so he is you know,
- 41:23Speaker 6: he is in school. He's got a teacher, you know what, Yes,
- 41:26Speaker 6: we need to drop him off somewhere. So yeah, he's
- 41:28Speaker 6: he's in pre K. But then Hank is in second grade.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Yeah, time flies, no doubt about it. Uh.
- 41:35Speaker 2: We made reference to the magazine and uh, we're giving
- 41:38Speaker 2: We've been giving away copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
- 41:41Speaker 2: Magazine for low these three weeks. And uh and and
- 41:45Speaker 2: we're gonna do it again. Give a We gave away
- 41:46Speaker 2: a copy of the two o'clock hour. We're gonna give
- 41:48Speaker 2: away a copy year in the three o'clock hour, one
- 41:50Speaker 2: in the four o'clock hour.
- 41:50Speaker 1: We're gonna do it the rest of the way. Uh.
- 41:52Speaker 2: But as I pointed out before you came on, Tip,
- 41:55Speaker 2: I did this last hour. I said, Uh, the magazine
- 41:58Speaker 2: is wonderful and it's got everything you need to kind
- 41:59Speaker 2: of perry for the season in high school and college
- 42:01Speaker 2: football in the state of Texas. But I said, uh,
- 42:04Speaker 2: and it's not even a supplement. It's a great partner
- 42:06Speaker 2: with It is the actual website. And I mentioned if
- 42:10Speaker 2: you go to Texas Football dot com, there's lots of
- 42:11Speaker 2: great things you can read and and and several of
- 42:15Speaker 2: those are free, and then there are those that are
- 42:18Speaker 2: there for subscribers.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Now correct me if I'm wrong.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Anybody that subscribes UH online at Texas Football dot Com also.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Gets a copy of the magazine, don't they.
- 42:28Speaker 6: You get a copy of the magazine too, Yeah, don't
- 42:30Speaker 6: worry about that.
- 42:31Speaker 1: You get the whole hog with it. You get our
- 42:33Speaker 1: You get all the.
- 42:34Speaker 6: Content on textaball dot com. You get all our sing content.
- 42:37Speaker 6: Are all the live games that we've got on texta
- 42:40Speaker 6: live too, So yeah, you get the whole hog.
- 42:42Speaker 2: And that leads me into asking you to give you
- 42:45Speaker 2: a chance to pump it up.
- 42:46Speaker 1: You you've got too.
- 42:47Speaker 2: In addition to the Texan live telecasts that come in,
- 42:51Speaker 2: you have too full on produced high school games of
- 42:56Speaker 2: the week, one on Thursday night, one on Friday night,
- 42:58Speaker 2: one of which you're calling the play by play you'll
- 43:00Speaker 2: know on the Friday night. But don't folks about those
- 43:01Speaker 2: two games that are coming up on Thursday nights and
- 43:03Speaker 2: Friday nights this fall.
- 43:05Speaker 6: Yeah, we've got on Thursday nights, we're going to have
- 43:07Speaker 6: our Rising Game of the week. Rising is kind of
- 43:10Speaker 6: our recruiting vertical, and so it's going to be focused
- 43:13Speaker 6: a lot more on like Star Powers can be focused
- 43:15Speaker 6: more on like the recruits, and so our recruiting team,
- 43:18Speaker 6: Greg Powers, Mallory Hartley, Carter Yates are going to be
- 43:20Speaker 6: out there, you know, calling the game and stuff like.
- 43:22Speaker 1: That with a specific focus.
- 43:24Speaker 6: We're covering in the high school football and the way
- 43:25Speaker 6: that you come to expect from Dave Campbell's. But also
- 43:28Speaker 6: if you're just interested in watching some of the three
- 43:30Speaker 6: four five star recruits, we're going to be spotlighting them.
- 43:33Speaker 1: Friday nights are going to be uh, Friday.
- 43:36Speaker 6: Night football where with myself and Matt step in the
- 43:39Speaker 6: booth calling one of the best high school football games
- 43:43Speaker 6: in the States that week and and kind of a
- 43:45Speaker 6: true game of the week. I'm sure we'll touch on recruiting,
- 43:48Speaker 6: because especially like now in high school football's impossible to
- 43:52Speaker 6: disentangle those two things. But our focus is going to
- 43:55Speaker 6: be on hey, here's a great high school football game.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Wh't you locked in with us?
- 43:57Speaker 6: And so yeah, we're we're really excited about that and
- 44:00Speaker 6: and and giving people what they want. It's going to
- 44:02Speaker 6: be you know, on Friday night, people on football on
- 44:05Speaker 6: Thursday Night.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Under way this year with Dave Campbell's.
- 44:11Speaker 2: And I might add all of that content is free
- 44:15Speaker 2: with the subscription. Correct correct, I will say yes, all
- 44:19Speaker 2: of that is free, but also the Thursday night and
- 44:21Speaker 2: Friday night games of the week, so the Rising Game
- 44:23Speaker 2: of the Week on Thursday and Friday night Football Game
- 44:26Speaker 2: of the Week on Friday, those are free as well.
- 44:28Speaker 6: Those are free for everybody. We just want you to
- 44:30Speaker 6: jump in the pool, come hang with us, and stuff
- 44:32Speaker 6: like that we want to give away. We would certainly
- 44:34Speaker 6: love for you to subscribe. That would be awesome, but
- 44:36Speaker 6: also just you know, come on and hang with us
- 44:38Speaker 6: on Friday night and then come watch us some.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Good high school I always want to give folks the
- 44:42Speaker 2: opportunity to do that, for them to be able to
- 44:46Speaker 2: jump in and subscribe to they want to. Now, I
- 44:50Speaker 2: speaking of the website, I wanted to ask your thoughts
- 44:54Speaker 2: on a piece. Are are a good friend and your colleague?
- 44:56Speaker 2: Mike Craven Rights And the headline is the twenty twenty
- 45:01Speaker 2: six college football season is critical for several Texas FBS coaches.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Here are the five head coaches under the most pressure.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Uh and uh and and uh. I've known Mike for
- 45:12Speaker 2: many years and I think the world of him. I
- 45:14Speaker 2: also think sometimes uh he has all He's an incredibly
- 45:17Speaker 2: talented writer. He can have all of the emotional uh
- 45:23Speaker 2: grip of a goouless.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Uh uh uh you know devil he can.
- 45:28Speaker 2: He can really write without a soul at all.
- 45:32Speaker 1: And so when it comes to a piece.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Like this, uh, he's really good at being able to say, look,
- 45:37Speaker 2: you know you've got you've got teams out there that
- 45:40Speaker 2: much is expected of them, and if they're not uh performing,
- 45:44Speaker 2: these coaches are going to be on the hot seat.
- 45:46Speaker 2: He has no proclivities at all about saying was this
- 45:49Speaker 2: his idea to come up with this particular piece?
- 45:52Speaker 6: It was and and and here's here's what I can
- 45:54Speaker 6: say unequivocally about my creb.
- 45:56Speaker 1: And he will call balls and strikes. He is.
- 46:00Speaker 6: It's a guy who who who will well we'll call
- 46:01Speaker 6: it right down that he will call it like a season.
- 46:03Speaker 6: So yeah, we've he's got a piece up about the
- 46:05Speaker 6: five FBS coaches that you know under the most pressure
- 46:09Speaker 6: heading into the season, you know, you know, on the
- 46:11Speaker 6: hot seat, whatever you will call it. I think I
- 46:12Speaker 6: would draw two different distinctions. You've got guys who are
- 46:18Speaker 6: their jobs are on the line. If they have a
- 46:19Speaker 6: poor season, they're probably heading for the unemployment line and
- 46:23Speaker 6: stuff like that. And I would put the top two
- 46:25Speaker 6: on his list, Scottie Walden at UTEB and Dave Randa
- 46:28Speaker 6: at Baylor in that mix, and both these guys, you know,
- 46:31Speaker 6: I think for for Aranda, I think right now you
- 46:35Speaker 6: would call this like one last gass. I think there
- 46:38Speaker 6: was a number of people, including myself, who was kind
- 46:41Speaker 6: of surprised he was retained for this year coming off
- 46:44Speaker 6: of last year.
- 46:44Speaker 1: But they're giving him one more shot. They've loaded up in.
- 46:46Speaker 6: The transfer portal, especially former mister Texas football DJ Lagway
- 46:49Speaker 6: from Florida to kind of save his job. But like,
- 46:52Speaker 6: make no mistake, another six and five record, another you know,
- 46:56Speaker 6: or six and six record, kind of down the middle,
- 46:58Speaker 6: he's going to mark the end almost certainly for a Veranda.
- 47:00Speaker 6: The other one is Scotty Walden. And and you know,
- 47:02Speaker 6: look he's he's five and nineteen since he took over
- 47:05Speaker 6: in twenty twenty four. And I love Scotty Walden. I
- 47:09Speaker 6: think he is a whale of a guy and a
- 47:11Speaker 6: whale of a coach. And I think a lot of
- 47:13Speaker 6: this is just how hard, plain and simple. It's just
- 47:17Speaker 6: it's a hard, hard, uh you know, program to do it.
- 47:21Speaker 6: Now he feels good about getting it going into twenty
- 47:23Speaker 6: twenty six. But I also think that you know, he
- 47:26Speaker 6: he understands the score, and he understands that this is
- 47:28Speaker 6: a that college football is a business.
- 47:30Speaker 1: That's category.
- 47:31Speaker 6: The other paper I would say is that these guys
- 47:34Speaker 6: need to win because people from saying bad things about
- 47:38Speaker 6: them on the internet, you know what I mean. And
- 47:41Speaker 6: so he was for example, number three on his list
- 47:43Speaker 6: is Steve Sarkisian, uh down there in Austin. I don't
- 47:46Speaker 6: think anybody is under any illusion that Steve Sarkisian's job
- 47:50Speaker 6: is at risk. Right of course, if things can happen,
- 47:53Speaker 6: if they were to go oh and twelve, like, maybe
- 47:56Speaker 6: things could get but like, I don't think there's any
- 47:58Speaker 6: realistic expectation that these Arcasians' job.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Is on the line.
- 48:02Speaker 6: Same thing I think goes with Joey McGuire at Texas Tech.
- 48:04Speaker 6: I don't think anybody thinks that Joey McGuire is going
- 48:06Speaker 6: to be out of a job if they have a
- 48:07Speaker 6: poor season. But I do think that there is high
- 48:11Speaker 6: expectations and when you fall short.
- 48:14Speaker 1: If you were to fall.
- 48:15Speaker 6: Short of those expectations, there's a cumulative effect of the heat,
- 48:20Speaker 6: let's just say.
- 48:20Speaker 1: And it kind of builds.
- 48:22Speaker 6: Uh So, these guys are under pressure to perform, but
- 48:25Speaker 6: I don't think that necessarily they they are worried about
- 48:28Speaker 6: getting a pink slip on their on their desk or
- 48:30Speaker 6: anything like that they would have the four season.
- 48:31Speaker 1: I think it's more like, Hey.
- 48:32Speaker 6: High expectations, You probably better live up to it or
- 48:36Speaker 6: people are going to start talking about you.
- 48:37Speaker 1: In ways you don't like.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Do you think that Sunny Dyke's at TCU is kind
- 48:40Speaker 2: of in between those two categories. I mean it would
- 48:43Speaker 2: it would have to take a big falling off for
- 48:45Speaker 2: them to decide to part company with him by the
- 48:47Speaker 2: same token, you know, they're expecting more of him than
- 48:51Speaker 2: what has been delivered of late.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Yeah, he's the strange one in this category, you know,
- 48:57Speaker 6: because I think you're right, he kind of splits the
- 48:59Speaker 6: difference here because look, overall.
- 49:01Speaker 1: His resume is he can say something.
- 49:04Speaker 6: That I believe no other team for coach in the
- 49:08Speaker 6: state can say, which is he's coaching.
- 49:10Speaker 1: The national championship game. Like he's he took tc to
- 49:12Speaker 1: a national championship game in this decade.
- 49:15Speaker 6: But at the same time, since since then, TCU is
- 49:19Speaker 6: fourteen and thirteen and Big twelve play, they've been absolutely average,
- 49:24Speaker 6: dead bang average there, and that is not what they've
- 49:26Speaker 6: wanted to do. And more importantly, I think that Mike
- 49:29Speaker 6: writes about this on the side, TC's kind of had
- 49:31Speaker 6: a bad, bad habit of losing games they shouldn't and
- 49:35Speaker 6: that I think doesn't bode well for him.
- 49:38Speaker 1: I don't know. It was one of those things where he's.
- 49:41Speaker 6: Probably one of those guys where like I said, if
- 49:44Speaker 6: Steve Starkeishan were to go like four and eight, I
- 49:47Speaker 6: think that he would still be the head coach of
- 49:48Speaker 6: Texas next year. If TCU were to go like three
- 49:52Speaker 6: and nine or four and eight, then suddenly it becomes
- 49:55Speaker 6: an active question for.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Sunny Dyke's and his his you're in and.
- 50:00Speaker 6: For withth I think that's probably he probably splits that
- 50:03Speaker 6: difference between true hot seat the seems preheated. Let's say
- 50:08Speaker 6: that you know what I mean, it's it's it's it's
- 50:10Speaker 6: it's preheat, it's been defrosted.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Which is the tougher job in the state of Texas
- 50:15Speaker 2: right now? U TIP or Sam Houston.
- 50:20Speaker 6: Man it's it's I would say it's probably U TEP simply.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Because we've seen Sam Houston win at a high level.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Right We've seen them.
- 50:28Speaker 6: Uh, you know, there's a team that has won you know,
- 50:31Speaker 6: ten games, and they've they've been a really good program. Furthermore,
- 50:35Speaker 6: they do not have the hurdles literally geographically that you
- 50:40Speaker 6: that U TEP has of getting kids out to El
- 50:42Speaker 6: Paso to go play there. The other thing about it
- 50:45Speaker 6: is that I think that the conference make up, I
- 50:49Speaker 6: think kind of uh, kind of works in the favor
- 50:54Speaker 6: of Sam Houston. You know, you know, being in Conference
- 50:57Speaker 6: USA gives them a little bit more of a a
- 51:01Speaker 6: I think there's a little bit more affiliation with the
- 51:04Speaker 6: state of Texas there, and you can convince people, hey,
- 51:06Speaker 6: come play in the state of Texas excepting to the
- 51:10Speaker 6: Mountain West, and you're like, okay, well, like I know
- 51:14Speaker 6: TC was there at one point. Like it's it's a
- 51:16Speaker 6: strange it's a strange confluence of that regard.
- 51:19Speaker 1: So I think that there's a lot.
- 51:20Speaker 6: Of bill tenors at UTEP that make it harder to
- 51:24Speaker 6: get talent out there than it would be there.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Tomson, that's a look at college football across the state
- 51:29Speaker 2: of Texas. Coming up, we'll shift our focus to high
- 51:32Speaker 2: school football in a Weekly Conversation with Greg Tepper.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Not only.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Are the Doobie Brothers performing tonight Movie Center, the Great
- 51:45Speaker 2: Santana will be there. Carlos Santana, We'll be there. This
- 51:49Speaker 2: is one of Santanna's biggest hits. The uh always popular
- 51:55Speaker 2: and well aged. So that's it's good to have that.
- 52:04Speaker 2: As we continue our conversation here with the editor in
- 52:07Speaker 2: chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, Great Tipper, all right,
- 52:10Speaker 2: let's jump to high school. I want to start off
- 52:13Speaker 2: with the news that came down last week, and your
- 52:16Speaker 2: partner in colleague, Matt step laid it out pretty succinctly
- 52:19Speaker 2: about the changes for the UIL State football Championships. Now,
- 52:23Speaker 2: if you're want to be with changes, what changes changes
- 52:26Speaker 2: in the schedule. Although it's still four days from Wednesday
- 52:29Speaker 2: to Saturday, sixteenth to the nineteen the December, and his
- 52:31Speaker 2: step rights the Wednesday format relatively unchanged. The one A
- 52:37Speaker 2: six man games will be the first two games this year.
- 52:39Speaker 2: It's the Division two state championship game that'll be played
- 52:43Speaker 2: Wednesday night, and that alternates every year.
- 52:45Speaker 1: It'll be to eighty one next year.
- 52:47Speaker 2: And then, as he writes, Thursday night is when the
- 52:49Speaker 2: changes start. To be made instead of the two A
- 52:52Speaker 2: Division one game opening at eleven am. They start with
- 52:55Speaker 2: a three A Division two state title game, then the
- 52:58Speaker 2: two A Division one state championship game in the middle,
- 53:01Speaker 2: followed by the three A D one game Thursday night Friday.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Here's where the major change noticeable change will happen. Four A,
- 53:10Speaker 2: five A and six A Division two state championship games
- 53:14Speaker 2: will start it off. The six A Division two state
- 53:17Speaker 2: title game will have a Friday night instead of Saturday
- 53:22Speaker 2: afternoon or Saturday night as it's been and it's the
- 53:25Speaker 2: first time since the single site format was implemented that
- 53:27Speaker 2: a six A state title game will be played on Friday,
- 53:30Speaker 2: and the Saturday schedule will feature the same schedule as Friday,
- 53:33Speaker 2: but the day will feature the D one schools. So
- 53:36Speaker 2: there will be a four A Division one state championship
- 53:41Speaker 2: game on Saturday and that'll be SAD in the middle
- 53:44Speaker 2: game Saturday afternoon, the five A D one game eleven
- 53:47Speaker 2: o'clock in the morning on Saturday, and the six AD
- 53:50Speaker 2: one game at seven o'clock Saturday night. I bet your
- 53:53Speaker 2: thoughts on this change.
- 53:55Speaker 6: Yeah, and so I want to make sure go to
- 53:58Speaker 6: tex football dot com see the whole schedule. Sometimes it's
- 54:00Speaker 6: going to visualize it, but basically on Thursday, the big
- 54:04Speaker 6: changes are gonna be on Friday and Satiday, where Friday
- 54:07Speaker 6: is gonna be Division two day and they're gonna go
- 54:09Speaker 6: five A, four A, six A, and then they're gonna
- 54:12Speaker 6: take that same thing and they're gonna do for Division
- 54:13Speaker 6: one on Saturday, and so the six A games will
- 54:16Speaker 6: be on on on Friday night and on Saturday night.
- 54:20Speaker 1: Uh.
- 54:20Speaker 6: To make sure I have a hard divide between what
- 54:24Speaker 6: I know and what I speculate.
- 54:26Speaker 1: So here's what I know.
- 54:27Speaker 6: Because I've had conversations with folks in the ui L
- 54:29Speaker 6: about this.
- 54:31Speaker 1: There has been.
- 54:32Speaker 6: Concern att stage about a phrase that I got to
- 54:36Speaker 6: learn about ingress and egress, okay, which is basically people
- 54:41Speaker 6: coming in and people going out.
- 54:43Speaker 1: And if you've been to at and T Stadium on a.
- 54:45Speaker 6: Saturday, those concourses get really crowded because you've got a
- 54:50Speaker 6: huge crowd leaving and another huge crowd coming in. And
- 54:53Speaker 6: I know the ui L has told me they've said
- 54:56Speaker 6: the fire Marshal's gotten onto us, like they've said, hey,
- 54:58Speaker 6: you've got to you gotta figure things out, and they
- 55:00Speaker 6: try to do their best but with that many bodies there,
- 55:03Speaker 6: that is a challenge. So that is one thing that
- 55:05Speaker 6: I know that they wanted to address, and this is
- 55:07Speaker 6: a way to address it. So that is the thing
- 55:09Speaker 6: the reason that I know now I'm going to move
- 55:12Speaker 6: hard divide. Here's me speculating. Okay, I don't have this
- 55:16Speaker 6: con confirm. Okay, I do know. You know I last
- 55:20Speaker 6: year there were a number of altercations. There are a
- 55:22Speaker 6: number of fights in the stands and in the concourses
- 55:26Speaker 6: between these you know, you've got schools, especially when you've
- 55:29Speaker 6: got schools that are from the same part of town.
- 55:31Speaker 1: You know last year.
- 55:31Speaker 6: Last year you had North Shore and ce King who
- 55:33Speaker 6: are basically neighbors in our rivals that were sharing the
- 55:36Speaker 6: same stateside of the same You've got Duncanville and De Soto,
- 55:39Speaker 6: you know, on the same side, and stuff like that.
- 55:42Speaker 6: There have been fights in the stands that I think
- 55:46Speaker 6: the UIL it was, it went a little viral online.
- 55:50Speaker 6: I think it's the UIL thinks it's a bad look.
- 55:52Speaker 6: I think again, speculate that they think that this would
- 55:55Speaker 6: help with that and kind of ease that because you're
- 55:58Speaker 6: kind of separating the two biggest classifications Furthermore, the other
- 56:02Speaker 6: thing that and this is me speculating again from a
- 56:05Speaker 6: TV perspective, this is kind of exactly what you would
- 56:09Speaker 6: want if you were scheduling this like the NFL schedules,
- 56:14Speaker 6: then you would put stick say on prime time on
- 56:16Speaker 6: Friday night and on Saturday Night, right yep. Like there's
- 56:19Speaker 6: a reason that the Dallas Cowboys are on Sunday Night
- 56:21Speaker 6: Football all the time, and ain't because they're winning a ton,
- 56:24Speaker 6: It's because they're the biggest brand names.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 56:27Speaker 6: And so again speculating, by setting this up, you now
- 56:31Speaker 6: have a prime time six A matchup on and on
- 56:35Speaker 6: Saturday night, and if you if you, you know, if
- 56:39Speaker 6: the the UIL is concerned about viewership and about ratings,
- 56:43Speaker 6: that would be a pretty good way to boost that
- 56:45Speaker 6: viewership and those ratings. So I think that that is
- 56:48Speaker 6: that is certainly something that that's sprung to mind when
- 56:50Speaker 6: when this first came down.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Well, and to your point with regard to some of
- 56:54Speaker 2: the uncomfortable feelings that happened, I know from working in
- 56:58Speaker 2: the network television booth, and you have a well that
- 57:01Speaker 2: on that on that that level, on that concourse level
- 57:06Speaker 2: where the television boots are, it's in the two hundred section,
- 57:09Speaker 2: the way that it is set up, because they really
- 57:11Speaker 2: don't have any other way to set this up. Fans
- 57:13Speaker 2: who are there safe for the first game of a
- 57:15Speaker 2: session that are sitting in that middle section, which, to
- 57:18Speaker 2: be honest, is a better vantage point than sitting down low.
- 57:20Speaker 1: You can see the field better. So there's people in.
- 57:23Speaker 2: There for a game going on, and then the people
- 57:26Speaker 2: for the next game are queuing up in that lobby,
- 57:29Speaker 2: in that concourse, and it gets real.
- 57:32Speaker 1: I'll tell you what.
- 57:33Speaker 2: For those of you who suffer from claustrophobia, you don't
- 57:35Speaker 2: want to be anywhere near that when that happens. That
- 57:38Speaker 2: gets that gets pretty scary. And then there is a reluctance.
- 57:42Speaker 2: And it doesn't matter if it's Inner City, it doesn't
- 57:44Speaker 2: matter if it's Panhandle, it doesn't matter if it's South Texas.
- 57:48Speaker 2: There's a reluctance by some folks to give up their
- 57:51Speaker 2: seat even though their team is done, they're playing, they're
- 57:54Speaker 2: supposed to clear out and let people come in for
- 57:56Speaker 2: the next thing. And there's there's a bit of inconsideration
- 57:58Speaker 2: that goes on there, and so nerves get a little
- 58:01Speaker 2: bit afraid. For people who want access to the seats
- 58:03Speaker 2: they hold tickets for, and then those who who want
- 58:07Speaker 2: to stick around and watch from their spot the next
- 58:09Speaker 2: game of a session.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Am I right?
- 58:12Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 58:12Speaker 1: I think so.
- 58:12Speaker 6: I think that there are you know you can you
- 58:14Speaker 6: can when you buy a ticket, you get.
- 58:17Speaker 1: To sit anywhere you want, and that's awesome.
- 58:19Speaker 6: The problem is that you get to sit anywhere you want,
- 58:21Speaker 6: including a seat that somebody else might want, and and
- 58:24Speaker 6: that especially when your team has left it. I say,
- 58:27Speaker 6: I believe a lot of those, as you said, some
- 58:29Speaker 6: of those altercations happened because people weren't going to give
- 58:32Speaker 6: up their seats or something like that, or hey move,
- 58:34Speaker 6: I want to sit there like I'm gonna watch you know,
- 58:35Speaker 6: my team or my kid or something like that. And
- 58:38Speaker 6: so I think the UIO by by doing this, it's
- 58:40Speaker 6: by going five A then four A than six A.
- 58:43Speaker 6: You've got four a crowd and six a crowd passing.
- 58:47Speaker 6: So a smaller crowd on the way out with a
- 58:49Speaker 6: bigger crowd on the way in will alleviate a lot
- 58:53Speaker 6: of those concerns, especially, you know, if you want to
- 58:56Speaker 6: think about it, that like if there is a Dallas
- 58:58Speaker 6: area team, if you're in Dallas, like you're likely to
- 59:01Speaker 6: just stick around and keep watching the game.
- 59:03Speaker 1: But if you've got to go back.
- 59:05Speaker 6: Let's just say, hypothetically, part that you were to be
- 59:07Speaker 6: in the state championship game, Well, it's.
- 59:08Speaker 1: About a three and a half hour drive to Fenila County.
- 59:11Speaker 6: You might want to get on the road a little bit.
- 59:12Speaker 6: And so I think that there are This is going
- 59:14Speaker 6: to be a really interesting experiment. The one we'll say
- 59:16Speaker 6: and this is, you know, I think that the u nothing.
- 59:20Speaker 6: One thing I've learned about the UIL is that nothing
- 59:23Speaker 6: is ever set in stone, and so I think the
- 59:27Speaker 6: UIL is going to try this. If there were if
- 59:31Speaker 6: it didn't solve the problems that they wanted, or hypothetically,
- 59:34Speaker 6: if attendance were to take a huge dip or something
- 59:37Speaker 6: like that, then I think that they would rethink it
- 59:39Speaker 6: and go back to the drawing board. As far as
- 59:41Speaker 6: the schedules, it's a big reason why they haven't been
- 59:43Speaker 6: back to Houston. There was one hundred thousand sands less
- 59:46Speaker 6: the one year they were at NRG as opposed to
- 59:48Speaker 6: what it usually is on average in Arlington. So you're right,
- 59:52Speaker 6: they're responsive in that. Okay, before we get done, we
- 59:55Speaker 6: want to continue our high school previews. We're on the
- 59:57Speaker 6: five A. Okay, the Southern we can close up the feature. No,
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: you know, let's listen.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: When you've got a state champion at the six A
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: level dropping down in classification, with a lot of people,
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: including one of the best running backs in the state,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: and Sarad Baker coming back, you don't have to be
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: fleeingy to figure it out that they're going to be
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: the preseason choice.
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: They're the number one team in our five A D
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: one rankings and for all their I mean, look, this
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: is a team like I think people may not think about.
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: Like I don't know why, but I think that people
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: maybe have a disconnect about DeSoto and the world dynasty.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: But they've won three titles in four years. That is,
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: in my estimation, the very definition of the dynasty. And
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: now they are dropping down a classification where they will
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: be theoretically the big fish in the small pond. Now
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: I will say this, you mentioned Sarrod Baker. Their defensive
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: line is going to be really, really good as well.
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: But I have a couple of concerns about them, you know,
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: especially I think kind of on the edges, you know,
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: they graduate Booby Feaster who's now at USC they they
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: need to find a quarterback.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: That's gonna be a question. Although they always just snapped
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: the ball to Surrod Baker.
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: That's a pretty good plan the other but I will
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: say this, it's like you you look at this at
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: the at the the five AD one rankings, man, there
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: is star power everywhere.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Okay, Smithson Valley.
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: Let's not forget the two time raigning five A D
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: one champs, right uh they are. They're gonna be different
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: in the way that like a lot of the big
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: Hog Molly's they've got in their strength.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: That they've had in the trenches.
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: Situated, but they have something that they haven't had in
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: this run of back to back state championship, which is
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: a known commodity. A star at quarterback in ty Can Newson.
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: By the way, speaking of stars at quarterback, you've got
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: Frisco lone star with with with right there. They're Trey Wright.
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: They're outstanding junior quarterback.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: He's a star. Oh yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: By the way, Richmond Randall's moving up to five A
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: D one and they have a guy who is on
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: the gate bold covering the magazine and Landon Williams. Kallis
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: the Texas commit, He's unbelievable. Denton Ryan's gonna be in
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: the mix with their new head coach Shane Tollison. If
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: you're looking for a team that is kind of like
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: a newcomer, a party crasher, because we name a lot
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: of brand names, Flugerville, Weiss by Stock Now they are
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: gonna be really really good coach Malcolm Hill his second
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: year there, and they are absolutely loaded with frontline talent
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: and our recruiting.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: People go nuts about Weiss. That is a team that
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: I want you to buy stock in.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Okay, and in five eighty two, since Randall has moved
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: over to five A D one, it would be logical
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: at South Oak Cliff, which seemingly holds an annual ticket
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: to playing there in Arlington, would beat the preseason joys.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even think about.
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: Has consecutive state championship games, like like thinking about the
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: program that have never done that, okay, Like like there's
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: tons of the very best programs in Texas high school
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: fall Highland Park has never done that, Okay, Like some
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: of the best programs in texasised schotball history have done
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: and haven't done it.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: South Oakcliff has they have some questions.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: I'm interested to see, especially what happens kind of at
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: the at the skills spots. They need to have some
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: some some dynamic playmakers. But I know they've got some
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: young guys who are real excited about one of these
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: really interesting. They've got quarterback in Jaydon Williams, like he
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: was the real difference maker for them last year. He's
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: back for his senior year. I like what Argyle brings
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: as probably the favorite region one. They get the transfer
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: from prosper will of growth Hayes Hackney. He will throw
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: to one of the best receiver corps in the state
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: out wide with Julian Caldwell. Even the way Port and
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: Asius grows looms as well. Now moving back over to
- 1:03:36Speaker 6: the other side of the bracket, they're gonna be interesting
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: because I think they're gonna run the ball really well.
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: But I like they're for the first time kind of
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: in this run of there. They got to replace some
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: big pieces up front. And then by the way, the
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: teams looking that I feel like nobody's talking about is Bernie. Okay,
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: Bernie in Region four, I think they're the I think they're,
- 1:03:56Speaker 6: in my estimation, the clear region for a favorite they
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: bring back Grant Sweeney, who is one of the state's
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: leading passers last year.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: They are I think going to be a real problem there.
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: And whoever they if they were, I think a Bernie
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: porten Ages Groves State semifinal would be box office.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Stuff, really really good.
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: So I think five eighty two actually is more wide
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: open than five AG one, even though five eight one
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: I think has.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: The star power edge.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and and could you see a semi final in
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: five A D two between our Gyle and South Olcliffe
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: like we saw a few years ago?
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Oh percent.
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: My questions for our guy are going to be on
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: the defensive side, but their offenses, and they're gonna have
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: one of the very best offenses in Texas. The other
- 1:04:34Speaker 6: team keep an eye on Terrell. After a breakout year
- 1:04:37Speaker 6: last year, can they do it again? Is this the
- 1:04:40Speaker 6: new normal for Terrell? Got a reload on defense. But
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: that's a that's a Tigers program that I think is
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: on the rise.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: He's Greg Tepper, editor in chief of Day Campbell's Texas
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: football magazine. We have Tuesdays with Tep each week. Next
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: week we finished the high school previews with the largest
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: of the classification six A and as tep pointed out
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: six AD two will be a Friday night, the championship
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: on Saturday, so anyway, we'll look forward to that. Hey
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: appreciate the time as always. Thanks, and we'll do it
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: again next week. Looking forward to it, guys. All right,
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: that's Greg Tepper. We have more coming up here on
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Glad to have you
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: with us on a Texan Tuesday. Greig Way and the
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: producer Jay Herman with you. Coming up in a few minutes.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: We'll continue our SEC football previews. We'll take a look
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: at the Alabama Crimson Tide, and of course we've been visiting,
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: you know, two weeks ago last week with all of
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: the play by play guys. Of the respect of other
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: fifteen institutions of the Southeastern Conference, you know, Texas of
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: course would be number sixteen out of sixteen. So you
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: hear from me all the times. You don't necessarily have
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: to have a Texas preview per se. We've been doing
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: that all along and we'll continue to do that. We're
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: going to hear some more from Steve Sarkisian in a
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: few minutes here. But we have been looking at all
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: of the other schools around the SEC. And remember it
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: started all the way back week before last with the
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: defending conference champions from George and we visited with Jeff Dansler,
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: who moves into their football play by play role this season.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: That was on Monday.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: On Tuesday, a week before last, we looked at Arkansas.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: We visited with their play by play voice, Chuck Barrett.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: On Wednesday it was the Florida Gator. Sean Kelly, who
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: calls the action for the Gators Radio network, joined us.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: Then on Thursday was Kentucky. Tom Leach, the voice of
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: the Kentucky Wildcats joined us. And on Friday it was
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: the Mississippi State Bulldogs and we visited with Neil Price.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: That was week one. Week two started off with South Carolina.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: This was last week. Todd Ellis, their play by play voice,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: was with us on Monday. Tuesday was the Missouri Tigers
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: and Mike Kelly, the voice of Missou joined us on Tuesday.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Wednesday was lsu and Chris Blair, their play by play
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: voice joined us on Wednesday, and then we wrapped up
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: on Thursday and Friday of last week. Thursday was Vanderbilt
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: as we visited with Andrew alligretta play by play voice
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: of the Vanderbilt Commodore, and on Friday we looked at
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: the other school in that state, the Tennessee Volunteers, and
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Mike Keith, their play by play voice, joined us. Of
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: course this week, yesterday we started it off with David Kellum,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: the voice of the Old Miss Rebels, and so coming
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: up we'll take a look at the Alabama Crimson tit
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: and just to let you know the rest of the week.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Tomorrow the other school in the state of Alabama, Auburn,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: and we'll visit with Andy Birchram, they're play by play voice.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Now, that could be a little bit tricky.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: With Andy because we have the Round Rock Express game
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: tomorrow starting at twelve fifty the coverage, but we do
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: believe we should at least have close to, if not all,
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: of the four o'clock hour at the very least of
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: the show to bring you, So we'll definitely have Andy
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Birchram scheduled for that portion of the show that we
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: have opened.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: That will be tomorrow and then.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: On Thursday, with two days remaining in our previews, why
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: not turn it to the two biggest rivals of Texas,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: the Oklahoma Suoners on Thursday and Toby Rowland, play by
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: play voice of the Suitors, will join us on Thursday,
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: and we'll wrap it up on Friday with the agis
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: of Texas A and M and Andrew Monico their play
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: by play voice. So you get to hear from the
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: play by play voices of all of the schools in
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: the Southeastern Conference. Let's hear from sark and in discussing
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: with the media individual improvement as well as overall unit improvement,
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: he was talking about Grayson Lilton. We saw Grayson Loveton
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: make big strides as a freshman last year, and now
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: what is little able to accomplish in will Mushchamps defense.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Grayson has had a great camp, and
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: you know, I think there was a learning curve and
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: a transition in spring ball. But I think, you know,
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: Grayson has quickly reminded us a week and a half
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: in how good of a football player he really is.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: And he made a bunch of great play Saturday, tackling,
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: playing physical, smart communicates well and so you know, I
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: think for us, I think he's really earned the trust
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: of coach Muschamp, which is important. That's a very critical
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: position for us to play. Obviously, Xavier Fielsmi's playing at
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: that spot. Deuce Cunningham is working at that spot. You know,
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: Bo Mascow is a guy that can kind of do
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: both play play that nickel spot and corner spot. So
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: I think we've we've created a good amount of depth
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: at that spot right now, but it is an important
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: position to what we're trying.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: To do next.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: Sart was asked that question that we always hear all
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: the time about, and that's that question leadership and how
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: it relates to the quarterback arch Banding is always going
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: to be, you know, looked at in terms of not
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: only the production, but the leadership element. So he was asked,
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: He's been asked almost every practice and after every scrimmage,
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: how's arts looking in terms of the leadership as well
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: as the production.
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: You know, I think leadership is unique because it's unique
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: to the personality, right and you know, like Matt Ryan
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: was a great leader, but Matt Ryan was like a
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: drill sergeant.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: It wasn't about rapport. It was about do as I
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: say and do as I do. Right, it was both
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: those things on the same token. You can have a
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: great leader who's a rapport guy and he has like
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: a feel for everybody in the room, and I think
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: that's Arch. I think he's got field guy. I think
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: he's an energy guy, and that's what the guy's feed
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: off of. We've seen the clips of last year, Like
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: when Arch goes into that mode, I think the team
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: feeds off of that, and so I think that that's
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: all that Stuff's really helpful that way. But in the
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: same note, like I'll go back to like DeVante Smith
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: and the way he led. He led by his actions
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: and the way he prepared and the way he practiced
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: and ultimately the way he played, and so everybody's different.
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: I think being true to yourself is when you become
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: the best leader that you can be and not try
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: to be something that you're not. The moment you try
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: to be something you're not, it feels awkward, it's not sincere,
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: it's not real, and I think peers, teammates feel that,
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: and so I think being true to yourself is probably
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: the best thing to be when you're trying to be
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: a leader that way.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: This week, of course, is the last full week on
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: the Texas Training Camp fall camp schedule that is not
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: a game week, so they start getting into the full week.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Week after next.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Next week the last practice schedule, but this week leads
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: up to a scrimmage. They have one more full scrimmage
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: that comes up on Saturday, and then they have one
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: more week of practice that leads to the dress rehearsal
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: that they have a week from Saturday, and that's largely
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: just getting the guys acclimated to the time. Well, let's
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: let's start tell you about it. First of all, the
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: scrimmage and then in addition to that, the scrimmage at
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: the end of this week, and then the dress rehearsal
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: the practice week leading up to both of these two events.
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, so I think how this will go is, we're
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: still in training camp mode right when we're walking through
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: in the morning, we're practicing tonight. We'll do the same
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: format tomorrow. We'll flip that on Thursday, we'll practice in
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: the morning, we'll walk through at night. So on same
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: with Friday, we'll scrimmage Saturday. You know, school starts next Monday,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: a week from today, and so what that week looks
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: like is, yes, we'll have a MOTT game that Saturday,
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: but we really treat that week like it's game week
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: because school has begun, and so we'll go to all
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: exclusively morning practice format. Will we'll install like we would
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: in a game week, whether it's based downs and then
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: it's third down, red area two minute like we would.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: And so what I'm learning this week is like we're
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: still just in training camp mode next week is how
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: well they can take in information and then apply it
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: and practice and then carry it over to the next day,
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: the next day and next day and then by that
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: Saturday of the mock game put it all together right,
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: Because that's another part of the evaluation process of all right,
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: each week, it's not the same game plan, right, and
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: so how do you take in that information and then
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: apply it to that Saturday? And so that'll be part
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: of next week because some of that, a lot of
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: that will be new for a lot of our faces,
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: even our transfers, because coming from different programs, different schemes,
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: you know, what we do, how we do, why we
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: do is probably different than where a lot of the
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: guys came from.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: There's Sark's thoughts on what they have coming up ahead
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: of them the schedule this week in addition to the
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: scrimmage that'll.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: Be on Saturday, and then that final.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Full week of practice that's not a game week that
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: it just leads to the dress rehearsal.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: And that's what I was referring to earlier.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: This is the final week that leads up to pads
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: really hitting on Saturday, and that will be this second
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: camp scrimmage coming up. All right, before we get to
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: the break and before we visit with Chris Stewart, I
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: do want to give away another copy of Dave Campbells
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: Texas Football Magazine, because after all, that's the other thing
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: we've done over these past three weeks. We've given away
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: copies of the magazine a week before last and all
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: of last week, and doing so all this week. Three
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: copies per show, available one per hour, and we've mixed
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: it between the trivia and the random. This hour it's
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: the random. So let's have you be the tenth tenth
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: person to reach us via the talkback microphone and again
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: to review, you download the iHeartRadio app. Really easy to
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: do and completely free. You search AM thirteen under the
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: zone it'll pop straight up and then when it does,
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: you tap that red button with the little white microphone
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: in it that activates our talk back line. And all
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: you have to say is I want the magazine, and
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: the tenth person in the ca thank you. The tenth
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: person in line to do that is going to get
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: a copy of the magazine. I don't know how to
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: tell you how to be the tenth person. Good luck
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: for you, hopefully you are. But the tenth person will
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: get the opportunity to pick up a copy of the magazine.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Coming up next we continue our SEC football previews, will
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: take a look at one of the conference preseason favorites,
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: the Alabama Crimson Tide. Will visit with Chris Stewart coming
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: up when we continue on this textan Tuesday on Sports
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: RADIOAM thirteen under the Zone and where you always listen
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: to us absolutely free of charge right here on the
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: You gotta stop, You got stop, You got stop.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: This is a Texan Tuesday here on thirteen under the Zone,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: and in the four o'clock hour, we do have amongst
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: our return cuts, the King George Trady joins us then.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: But our own star joining us right now as we
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: continue our SEC football previews is our good friend Chris
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Too at the play by play voice of the Alabama
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Crimson Ties. We take a look at the Tide for
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: twenty to twenty six. I appreciate that. How's your summer going,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Kris Man?
- 1:16:14Speaker 8: It's great, but I gotta make sure did I understand
- 1:16:17Speaker 8: you correctly?
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I'm all on the same show that George Strait will.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: Appear on every Tuesday. We bump back in the two
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: o'clock hour with the immortal Stevie ray Vaughn, in the
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: three o'clock hour with the iconic Willie Nelson, and in
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: the four o'clock hour with the King George Straight little
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Texan Tuesday.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: I got you.
- 1:16:39Speaker 8: I misunderstood the assignment, but I'm still honored nonetheless that
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: I get to appear, at least in that manner.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, with him, but it's too good.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: Yeah, So summer's gone well for you? Getting ready, I know, Yeah,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: a little vacation time, get ready for the start of
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: the season.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: It's been nice. I've been.
- 1:16:59Speaker 8: Following my retirement plans progress. I've got a fifteen year
- 1:17:02Speaker 8: old son that plays golf, and he's the only shot
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: I've got it ever being able to say I'm done,
- 1:17:10Speaker 8: and I will say four oh, one k, as I've
- 1:17:12Speaker 8: dubbed him, is progressing nicely, So there you go.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: It's been fun. It's been fun.
- 1:17:16Speaker 8: That's been great to be able to spend time chasing
- 1:17:19Speaker 8: him around and watch his success, but also play with
- 1:17:22Speaker 8: him a good bit and you know, kind of enjoy
- 1:17:25Speaker 8: some normal stuff. So it's that's been nice. But I
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: am like everybody else, I'm ready to get going here
- 1:17:30Speaker 8: within the month and see what our teams are all about.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: Well, you know, interested in getting your thoughts on Caitlyn
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: de boor getting ready to crank things up on a
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: third season. Last year definitely a step forward getting into
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: the playoff as well and winning eleven ball games as well.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: And trust me, as you know, the expectation they're in
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: the Yellahammer state very much like the expectations here in
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: this town and in a lot of other places as well.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: So is there a lot of uh, you might say,
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: ramped up optimism causes optimism, excited optimisic? How would you
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: describe what what the atmosphere has been like? And I
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: know there are two different things, the fan base the
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: program itself, right, And that's.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: What I was going to say. It depends on who
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: you're talking to, if you're talking to.
- 1:18:24Speaker 8: The the the internet, you know, fake name, you know,
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: people that are that are nameless and faceless in terms
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: of true identity.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: You would think that we didn't win a game last year,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: not that our season ended in the Rose Bowl.
- 1:18:44Speaker 8: Okay, uh the and let me be real clear on that.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I'm saying this and jest.
- 1:18:51Speaker 8: Alabama was man handled in a way that Alabama's not
- 1:18:55Speaker 8: supposed to be man handled, albeit in the Rose Bowl,
- 1:18:59Speaker 8: all be it at the place that you know, it's
- 1:19:02Speaker 8: it's it's not a it's never good to have your
- 1:19:04Speaker 8: season fall short of a national championship, especially at Alabama.
- 1:19:08Speaker 8: But you know, there are a lot of teams that
- 1:19:11Speaker 8: would have loved to have been in the spot Alabama
- 1:19:14Speaker 8: was in. Sure, Okay, but that being said, we fell
- 1:19:18Speaker 8: what we fell short of what the standard is for Alabama. However,
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: it's easier to get where you want to be from
- 1:19:25Speaker 8: our spot than it is from a lot of others.
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: So there are those that are going, Holy cal you know,
- 1:19:31Speaker 8: I don't know if we're going I don't know if
- 1:19:33Speaker 8: we could even have a winning record this year. Those
- 1:19:36Speaker 8: are the doom, those of the doomsday people. I think
- 1:19:40Speaker 8: you know, uh, you've got some weight and sees in
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: that building. Though they know who they are, they know
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: who they're capable of being, and it's a team that
- 1:19:53Speaker 8: fully believes they're capable of exceeding what they did last year.
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: There was a Nick Saban factor that men Alabama was
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: going to start in the top five.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Regardless.
- 1:20:05Speaker 8: They could have had you and me starting at different
- 1:20:07Speaker 8: spots and probably still would have had us slipped us
- 1:20:10Speaker 8: down to six. If Nick Saban was the coach and
- 1:20:13Speaker 8: he'd earned that and it was it was a safe vet.
- 1:20:17Speaker 8: Why would you not put put your money on Bama
- 1:20:20Speaker 8: being where they almost always seemed to be under the
- 1:20:24Speaker 8: best coach of this era. That being said, this is
- 1:20:29Speaker 8: a team that's still in a program, that's still in
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: a very good position, and I think they've got a
- 1:20:34Speaker 8: chance to be a national championship contender, an SEC content Well,
- 1:20:39Speaker 8: if you're an SEC contender, you're a national championship Sure,
- 1:20:42Speaker 8: you know this team was the number one seed in
- 1:20:44Speaker 8: the SEC last year.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: By the time it was over. You don't lose it
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: home to Oklahoma.
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: Late in the regular season, this team would have been
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: clearly number one, and no conversation about whether they would
- 1:21:00Speaker 8: of the in er out in terms of the playoffs
- 1:21:03Speaker 8: once they lost to George.
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: In the championship game. So look, we're not far at
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: all in my opinion.
- 1:21:10Speaker 8: And if we can avoid we could avoid injury stuff
- 1:21:13Speaker 8: and everybody deals with it, but more so I think
- 1:21:15Speaker 8: than ever right now, Craig, with the numbers being as
- 1:21:18Speaker 8: they are, I'm talking blue chip numbers. You know, used
- 1:21:21Speaker 8: to have blue chips that your red shirt. That doesn't
- 1:21:24Speaker 8: happen anymore. And if you could avoid those and we
- 1:21:27Speaker 8: lost the running back for a few weeks anyway in
- 1:21:30Speaker 8: Akdar in Saturdays or Thursday scrimmage, I should say last week.
- 1:21:34Speaker 8: But if you could avoid those type of things, this
- 1:21:37Speaker 8: squad's going to be just fine.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: Here's a question I have asked of me quite often
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: when it comes to Sark, but I think it's every
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: bit as applicable with Kaylyn de Boor. Has he gotten
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: a fair shake? I mean, at least from the fan
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: perspective anyway?
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Is he gotten his.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: The respect that would accord a guy who's won twenty
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: ball games in the Cup of years.
- 1:22:01Speaker 8: No, And to me it's it's about not just what
- 1:22:05Speaker 8: he's done since he's been in Tuscaloosa, but looking at
- 1:22:07Speaker 8: what the overall track record is, and it's kind of threefold.
- 1:22:11Speaker 8: It's those two things, and then it's another i'll, i'll,
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: you know, we'll go to the panic button people and say, okay,
- 1:22:20Speaker 8: let's make a change of coach.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Who are you going to hire?
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: Who are you going to hire that you can guarantee
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: we'll have the higher level, the more consistent level of success.
- 1:22:35Speaker 8: You know, the easy answer may be a Kirby smart
- 1:22:38Speaker 8: Will you think you're gonna pull Kirby from Georgia?
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: You know, Alabama's Alabama? But are you gonna pull Sark
- 1:22:45Speaker 8: from Texas? I mean, just like you said, there are
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: people there at Texas that are questioning Sark. Sure right now,
- 1:22:52Speaker 8: but it's the nature of people were questioning Nick Saban.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 1:22:58Speaker 8: So that's that's the type stuff that you were into.
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: If you listen to those people, eventually you will be
- 1:23:04Speaker 8: sitting beside them. And so again, the passion is what
- 1:23:09Speaker 8: part of what makes all of our programs so great.
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: But you've got to you've got to make sure you
- 1:23:15Speaker 8: respect that passion.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: But you can't.
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: Let passion and irrational rule of the day. And this
- 1:23:24Speaker 8: guy I think is fantastic, and I think has been
- 1:23:30Speaker 8: a great combination of adapting where he needs to and
- 1:23:33Speaker 8: yet staying true to who he is. And so that's
- 1:23:36Speaker 8: a that's that's what I'm excited about seeing this year
- 1:23:40Speaker 8: because I think we're terrific defensively, and I think we're
- 1:23:44Speaker 8: going to be very, very, very explosive and balanced on offense.
- 1:23:48Speaker 8: We're going to run the ball better, We're going to
- 1:23:50Speaker 8: be better on the offensive line.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: But you've got to go show it. You got to
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: go prove it.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Visiting with Chris Douher, play by play voice of the
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Alabama Crinston Tide here on thirteen hundred, Hey, I'll veer
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: off course just for a moment, then get back on.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: We'll talk about this team just as an update since
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: it has been since January twenty ten.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: So what's going on?
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: Seventeen years since I've been in the broadcast booth at
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: the Rose Bowl to call a game. Are the two
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: radio networks all the way down at the end? Still
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: they put them all the way down at the left
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: end of the booth as you face the field.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember. I think we were I think
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: we're pretty close to midfield. Good. Hopefully it made that change.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: I think we're pretty close. I think we're pretty close
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: to mid.
- 1:24:36Speaker 8: Phil As I recall, you know, there ain't nothing new
- 1:24:41Speaker 8: that's been done to it other than that, you know,
- 1:24:44Speaker 8: it's Pasadena and you know, the only investment that's been
- 1:24:49Speaker 8: made in that place, I think is got himself and
- 1:24:52Speaker 8: you don't need to change what he's done with the
- 1:24:54Speaker 8: outside and the view.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: But the stadium itself is it says the rose Ball on.
- 1:25:06Speaker 8: It, and beyond that, I don't think that there's a
- 1:25:09Speaker 8: ton of a ton of excitement.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: It's a good thing that well, I'll put it this way.
- 1:25:14Speaker 8: There there was not a whole lot to be excited
- 1:25:16Speaker 8: about watching on the field for Alabama fans last year.
- 1:25:19Speaker 8: But also we had rainy cloud cover and it wasn't
- 1:25:22Speaker 8: until the fourth quarter that the clouds finally lived in
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: when you could see San Gabriel Mountains, which is what
- 1:25:29Speaker 8: makes that whole experience of being there. So there was
- 1:25:33Speaker 8: absolutely nothing pleasant until the fourth quarter for Alabama, and
- 1:25:36Speaker 8: by the end of game was so bad that a
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: lot of AAMA fans were heading for the exits.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: Anyway, Yeah, you're right.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: The San Gabriel Mountains and the Arroyo Seko take care
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: of everything else exactly. And you know, I've been asked
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: often about that the Vince Young run for the touchdown
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: and win the five National championship, and I said, you
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: do know what I call that, I'm leaning out the window,
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: leaning way out because we were all the way down
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: the other same thing the prior year when Texas beat Michigan,
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: leaning out looking way down at the other end of
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: the opposite endo the field where he scored that touchdown.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: So that's why you're still in my mind wondering, you know,
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: if you're at the radios, were well that that's that's
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: hopeful the future of hy the spot there again.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: And just a broadcaster thing.
- 1:26:17Speaker 8: It's it's one thing if you're in that position, like
- 1:26:20Speaker 8: when you're at you're at the beautiful stadium in Dallas
- 1:26:24Speaker 8: for the Cowboys. We're even in the when you're you're
- 1:26:28Speaker 8: fortunate enough to draw the home booth for a game,
- 1:26:32Speaker 8: you're you're well into the end zone. But the video
- 1:26:35Speaker 8: board is so massive and you can see everything so
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: clearly for the most part, we're calling it off that anyway,
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: So so you you know, vision is not an issue
- 1:26:47Speaker 8: because of that but man, when you're when you're in
- 1:26:49Speaker 8: an older place technology wise, uh, and you've got that
- 1:26:53Speaker 8: kind of spot, it is tough to It is tough
- 1:26:57Speaker 8: to share clearly with your audience exactly what's going on
- 1:26:59Speaker 8: on when you're not so sure you can see it yourself.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: Yeah. I had no doubt about that. And you're right.
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: Once he actually moves beyond midfield, you're you're kind of
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: looking at the big board.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Uh from that. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Let's let's let me start with the quarterback because because uh,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: I called his state championship game when he was playing
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: at Duncanville. When when uh, when his teammate was Colin Simmons, the.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Texas edge rusher.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: When they want to stay tyle, I can imagine those
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: guys on the same football team and Alex January as well. Uh,
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: they were all on that same Duncanville team that won.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: How about Keelan Russell and and and the things that
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: that he has uh you know, had thrust upon him,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: uh to be able to jump in there and uh
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: and be in firm command of this Crimson Tide offense
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: this season.
- 1:27:46Speaker 8: Yeah, he is obviously and you saw it before we did.
- 1:27:49Speaker 8: Just ultra talented has handled himself incredibly well. Had the
- 1:27:56Speaker 8: tragedy uh losing his sister when he was I had
- 1:28:00Speaker 8: first basically gotten on campus, and you know, there are
- 1:28:06Speaker 8: a lot of people that thought, well, they want to
- 1:28:08Speaker 8: transfer back home, but the reality was I think that
- 1:28:11Speaker 8: that football building had become family to him and that's
- 1:28:16Speaker 8: where he felt like he needed to be and.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I think it was.
- 1:28:22Speaker 8: Therapeutic for him to be in that environment. But moving
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: on from that piece of it, he's just developed and
- 1:28:29Speaker 8: gotten better and better. And to me, it speaks volumes
- 1:28:32Speaker 8: to who Austin Mack is that he is. You know
- 1:28:37Speaker 8: that it's not an obvious that Keelan Russell is the
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: guy right now. The flip to that as well as
- 1:28:43Speaker 8: to tell you how good Austin Mack is, or it
- 1:28:48Speaker 8: tells you, excuse me, how good that Keelan is.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: That Austin isn't the runaway guy.
- 1:28:54Speaker 8: Because this is somebody who's got four years now in
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: Kaitlyn devorce system. He was signed by I'm at Washington,
- 1:29:01Speaker 8: was a red shirt for a year there now has had.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: In essence two years in the system.
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: He was the primary backup last year in addition to
- 1:29:16Speaker 8: getting reps the previous year.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: So playing behind.
- 1:29:22Speaker 8: Ty Simpson a season ago and now it's it's still
- 1:29:26Speaker 8: a battle.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: I mean, they haven't named a starter. If I had to,
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: if I had to place.
- 1:29:30Speaker 8: Your money on it, Craig, I would say that Austin
- 1:29:33Speaker 8: will probably get the first snaps.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: But I don't think this is going to be.
- 1:29:39Speaker 8: You know, just because you're the guy going into the
- 1:29:40Speaker 8: East Carolina game doesn't mean that you will be to
- 1:29:43Speaker 8: be one for the Auburn win.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: So Keelan's Keelan's.
- 1:29:47Speaker 8: Upside is so incredibly high that I think there's phenomenal
- 1:29:54Speaker 8: excitement about where this team can be under him. But
- 1:29:58Speaker 8: for Week one and for the early part of the season,
- 1:30:02Speaker 8: it may be that Bostin's experience and ability to avoid
- 1:30:07Speaker 8: mistakes and give.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Him a little bit of an edge out of the gate.
- 1:30:11Speaker 8: But again, as those thoroughbreds run, there's no doubt that
- 1:30:15Speaker 8: Keland is a Triple Crown quality horse, if you will,
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: and I'll be really surprised if he doesn't have a
- 1:30:23Speaker 8: prominent role in this offense as the season goes on.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: If there was in your estimation at this point here
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: in August a question mark that if this goes the
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: way folks think it will. This is going to be
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: really really good. If there was a part of the
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: offense and that what would it be. It's got to
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: be upfront. You're going to replace now again, the offense.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: The offensive line had some talent in some periods.
- 1:30:53Speaker 8: Of success, certainly in a passing game with Ty Simpson
- 1:30:55Speaker 8: as a quarterback, but they could run it last year consistently.
- 1:31:02Speaker 8: It was well off of what Alabama was supposed to
- 1:31:05Speaker 8: in a run game. Part of that's with running backs
- 1:31:07Speaker 8: being injured. Part of that was with lineman trying to
- 1:31:11Speaker 8: get some things figured out and battling injuries and a
- 1:31:13Speaker 8: lot of shuffling.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: And trying to piece it together.
- 1:31:16Speaker 8: A new offensive line coach and a new approach in
- 1:31:19Speaker 8: Adrian Clem who they're really excited about. But also the
- 1:31:23Speaker 8: pieces they put in tackle to tackle they feel really
- 1:31:27Speaker 8: good about and feel like they're going to be a
- 1:31:29Speaker 8: more effective rush team and give whoever the starting quarterback
- 1:31:33Speaker 8: is or wherever it's a quarterback period time to find
- 1:31:38Speaker 8: an incredibly gifted group of receivers in a deep receiving
- 1:31:42Speaker 8: corps as well. So they're really excited about that. But
- 1:31:46Speaker 8: the offensive line has got to be what they think
- 1:31:49Speaker 8: it can be and they are excited about that, but
- 1:31:52Speaker 8: it's how quick can those guys gel?
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: And the same thing can be said on defense.
- 1:31:57Speaker 8: You know, the back half of that defense, especially second
- 1:32:00Speaker 8: probably as good as any in the country. But the
- 1:32:04Speaker 8: defensive front has got to be I think consistent this year.
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: And when you lose a guy like Tim Peenan in
- 1:32:12Speaker 8: the middle, which is where everything started, you've you've got
- 1:32:16Speaker 8: huge shoes to fill in that regard. So you know,
- 1:32:19Speaker 8: does Bama get the job done up front on both
- 1:32:23Speaker 8: sides full determine exactly how deep this season goes, no.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Doubt about it.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: Chris doher play by play voice of the Crimson Time
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: joining us for a few more minutes.
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: I look at your schedule.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: And what I've asked all of my sec play by
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: plate brethren, I'll put to you as well. And that's
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: obviously the most talked about thing with regard to scheduling
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: the nine game conference schedule. I ask this as I
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: look at your schedule, and you have the unique schedule
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: to anyway with the late season non conference game like
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: you have against Chattanooga, so it and then and then
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: there's some other ones, you know, like Florida has Florida
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: State late, George Georgia Tech Lake, Kentucky as louisvillelate, that
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: kind of thing. And so my question to those guys
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: has been, hey, you only got two weeks to Rampa,
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: but you only have one with East Carolina with the
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: Florida State game on the back side of that Kentucky
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: Conference opener on the road.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: So that's that's a little bit unusual with then, Yeah,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: it is.
- 1:33:19Speaker 8: And I know East Carolina probably didn't get our league
- 1:33:22Speaker 8: and I know it didn't get our fans fired up,
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: But you know, it's a reputable program.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: It's to be determined how how good they are.
- 1:33:30Speaker 8: Yes, it's when Alabama should win and should win comfortably,
- 1:33:34Speaker 8: depending on what your definition of comfortable is. But I
- 1:33:37Speaker 8: think one of the biggest challenges for Alabama is locking
- 1:33:40Speaker 8: in on East Carolina and locking in on the trip
- 1:33:44Speaker 8: to Lexington and not looking ahead to Florida State, where
- 1:33:47Speaker 8: they feel like they've got so much to pay back
- 1:33:49Speaker 8: from what had that season teetering on the brink after
- 1:33:53Speaker 8: Week one because of the way.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: You lost and and.
- 1:33:57Speaker 8: There was a high expectation of Alabama winning that game
- 1:34:00Speaker 8: and simply didn't get it done. And they had to
- 1:34:03Speaker 8: really rally the troops. It was until they beat Georgia
- 1:34:06Speaker 8: in Week four that they felt like things were stabilized
- 1:34:11Speaker 8: for the year. But you go those first three ball
- 1:34:15Speaker 8: games and there's there's a challenge. Before you have South
- 1:34:18Speaker 8: Carolina at home. October is a road trip to Startvill,
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: which I know again is one of those that doesn't
- 1:34:24Speaker 8: outside of Alabama, doesn't get a lot of attention, but
- 1:34:28Speaker 8: State is historically it's physical a game that Alabama plays.
- 1:34:33Speaker 8: That is one where you think of Georgia nationally. You
- 1:34:38Speaker 8: think of Auburn regionally and nashly as the close rivals,
- 1:34:43Speaker 8: but Alabama Mississippi State are the two closest schools geographically.
- 1:34:46Speaker 8: A lot of folks don't know that, Yeah, exactly they are.
- 1:34:50Speaker 8: It's closer to Startville than it is to Auburn for Alabama,
- 1:34:54Speaker 8: they're from tuscaloosas So that's an intense one.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: Before you have Georgia going to see on the.
- 1:35:00Speaker 8: Road, Texas, A and M at home to end the
- 1:35:03Speaker 8: month of October, and then you flip it, it's at LSU,
- 1:35:08Speaker 8: It's at Vandy, which is no longer taken for granted, Chattanoogle,
- 1:35:12Speaker 8: like you said, and then Auburn at home to wrap
- 1:35:15Speaker 8: up the regular season, and so there's there's yes, there's
- 1:35:19Speaker 8: a bye week, and yes there's Chattanoogle eight.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: But like everybody else.
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: There's not a ton of room to catch your breath
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: in this league because weekend and week out, it is
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: a battle.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: And you're either you're either in another.
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: Team that's against another team that's comparable, or you're playing
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: somebody perceived lower than you that is going to give
- 1:35:39Speaker 8: you probably their best game of the year to try
- 1:35:41Speaker 8: to knock you off. Sounds like this steals the same thing.
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I start to say it sounds like your answer
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: to the question about how do you feel about a
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: nine game a nine game conference schedule is similar to
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: mine in that the fans love it. The media probably
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: enjoys it as well, because a lot of those that
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: ninth conference opponent's going to be better than most of
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: the other ones you might see in non conference, unless
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: it's a nationally renowned program like of Florida State or
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: Ohio State coming here, that sort of thing. But it's
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: there's a reason why the coaches weren't in favor of it.
- 1:36:15Speaker 8: Look, it is one of the challenges for everybody, but
- 1:36:20Speaker 8: especially perennial national championship contenders like Alabama and Texas. There
- 1:36:28Speaker 8: are so many fans that remember the history and remember
- 1:36:32Speaker 8: the perfect seasons and that is the standard. But the
- 1:36:38Speaker 8: reality is that you will have fewer and fewer perfect
- 1:36:42Speaker 8: seasons where they're hoisting the national championship trophy at the
- 1:36:46Speaker 8: end of the year. This is much more like professional
- 1:36:49Speaker 8: football in so many ways, but especially as it relates
- 1:36:53Speaker 8: to the Super Bowl itself, where nobody knows what the
- 1:36:57Speaker 8: regular season record is.
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: You know, in the.
- 1:36:59Speaker 8: NFL, well, they had had that perfect season since the
- 1:37:02Speaker 8: Miami Dolphins of Don shul and it may or may
- 1:37:05Speaker 8: not ever happen again. It's very I think we're rapidly
- 1:37:10Speaker 8: approaching that with if we have it already gotten there
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: with college football, with the playoffs, the number of games
- 1:37:17Speaker 8: you have, the conference championship game two and the week
- 1:37:21Speaker 8: after week Brian, and the attrition that can take place
- 1:37:24Speaker 8: now because of guys you probably faced it. You guys
- 1:37:28Speaker 8: have some of our starters, former starters. South Carolina had
- 1:37:33Speaker 8: two guys starting on defense last year that would have
- 1:37:35Speaker 8: started for us that and I don't say this as
- 1:37:39Speaker 8: a knocker, as a princess and it's just the reality
- 1:37:41Speaker 8: of the game. They're guys that would have started for US,
- 1:37:43Speaker 8: but took money a year early so that they can
- 1:37:46Speaker 8: get on the field and make money. So they didn't
- 1:37:49Speaker 8: wait their time like like that would be the case
- 1:37:52Speaker 8: in the past. So those are all things that factor
- 1:37:56Speaker 8: in to make them it so different. It was already
- 1:37:58Speaker 8: tough to be perfect, and now it's virtually impossible. And
- 1:38:04Speaker 8: I think that's where the mindset adjustment will have to
- 1:38:06Speaker 8: take place. Where do you finish? That's what it's going
- 1:38:10Speaker 8: to matter. Don't look at the path, don't look at
- 1:38:12Speaker 8: how the sausage is made. Just enjoy it when it
- 1:38:14Speaker 8: lands on your plate. Hopefully that's a delicious bite, all right.
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: And for those who said, well, what about Indiana they
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: went um bet last year, Well you got to see
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: it firsthand how good that was. But you know, sure,
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: it's going to be incredibly difficult for anyone to duplicate
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: that it's the reason Indiana.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: But Indiana didn't.
- 1:38:32Speaker 8: Have to play weekend and week out what Alabama Texas did.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: No doubt they destroyed us wh when they played US.
- 1:38:37Speaker 8: I'm not diminishing who they were, but that attrition that
- 1:38:41Speaker 8: can take place over the course of the year. Alabama
- 1:38:44Speaker 8: wasn't better against Indiana, part of because of getting beat
- 1:38:47Speaker 8: up throughout the course of the year in the SEC.
- 1:38:49Speaker 8: I know the Big Ten is great, it is on
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: the top half, but give me some of the teams
- 1:38:55Speaker 8: Indiana had got a chance to face during the year
- 1:38:59Speaker 8: in league play, not counting there.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: Go just compare the schedules.
- 1:39:03Speaker 8: Okay, And again I'm not talking about what happened in
- 1:39:06Speaker 8: the head to head because Indiana was clearly superior, but
- 1:39:10Speaker 8: also Indiana was a lot closer to full strength than
- 1:39:14Speaker 8: Alabama and probably Oregon as well, even though that's the
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: same way.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Hey, I appreciate you taking the time to do this anytime, bro,
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: And listen, if I'm seeing you before basketball, it means
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: we're both in Atlanta for the SEC championship game. So
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: that'd be okay, right if it worked out that way.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: I got no problem seeing me multiple times in the
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: course of your body. That works for me, all right.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: He's Chris Stewart, play by play voice of the Alabama
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: Crimson Tide here in our SEC previews.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: Thank you, my friend. I appreciate that any time. All right.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: That's Chris Stewart, We have more coming up when we
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: continue on
