- 1:00the beauty of Mountain Spirit. Welcome back, everybody.
- 1:07Hope you're having a great week so far.
- 1:10Hope you've enjoyed this hot, hot summer that we're having at
- 1:13least here in the portion of the United States that I live in.
- 1:16I know this week this reaches far and wide and not necessarily
- 1:21everyone is experiencing the same types of weather that we
- 1:23are, but if if the heat is your thing, then then you ought to
- 1:28be, as you know, happy as a clam, as they say.
- 1:33So welcome back to the show this week at a very fun and exciting
- 1:37interview that we're going to be holding today with a return
- 1:40guest. If you guys have listened to my
- 1:44stuff before watching my content, you've probably heard
- 1:47of Saga Ericsson. She's a heathen hedge witch, as
- 1:50she calls herself, and she's located in the United States as
- 1:53well, quite up north in the UP of Michigan, so the Upper
- 1:58Peninsula area. So she's probably not dealing
- 2:01with the oppressive heat down here too much.
- 2:04But anyway, she had reached out not all that long ago and wanted
- 2:09to come on here and talk about how she has incorporated art
- 2:17into keeping the lore alive. And she's going to have some
- 2:22presentations of her original artwork in regards to that.
- 2:28And so she's going to be or together, she or I or both maybe
- 2:32are going to be she's she's put together a number of slides and
- 2:36presentation of the examples of her artwork.
- 2:39So, you know, I think this is one of those things that as
- 2:43heathens and, and, you know, people with, with creative
- 2:45minds, you know, we, we look at, you know, whether it's a
- 2:48crafting and any sort of like physical, tangible item that you
- 2:51can use or, or, or play like an instrument or drum or any other
- 2:57sort of, you know, such things as like ritual items.
- 2:59Anytime that you know, that artistic, you know, that, that,
- 3:04that artistic funny bone or that artistic, you know, bone can be
- 3:08tickled. It's exciting to see what comes
- 3:12of it, how people manifest certain things through their art
- 3:16and saga's art is is pretty wild.
- 3:20I don't know if they're, you know, watercolors or, or
- 3:22anything like that. She's going to explain to us
- 3:23more about that when she comes on here today.
- 3:28But if you want to listen or or watch, you know, anything else
- 3:31that that her and I have done, I'll have the previous episodes
- 3:35LinkedIn the show notes. So for those of you on Patreon,
- 3:39you can go back through my video catalog and want to say she was
- 3:47she might have been on like one of the first guests on on season
- 3:50five this year or at the very end of season four, but
- 3:55relatively recently. So so that that episode that
- 4:00that she was in last time will be LinkedIn the show notes of
- 4:03the podcast or you know, down in the video description for all
- 4:06you folks on Patreon. And because we are going to be

- 4:18dollar, get your access and watch and see what Saga has to
- 4:22offer. Because this is going to be a
- 4:24very visual episode. We're going to be or she's going
- 4:27to be sharing a lot of her her art with us.
- 4:30And so if you're not watching it, everything that you were
- 4:34listening to is you're not going to get as much of an experience
- 4:37out of it as if you were were watching it, you know?
- 4:40So as a reminder, if you go to patreon.com/midgarden Musings
- 4:44pledge $1.00, that gets you access to the video versions of
- 4:47the show. And if you want to continue your
- 4:50pledge after that, it's greatly appreciated.
- 4:52But you don't have to. You can just do the the one time
- 4:54pledge, watch the episode or watch as many video episodes as
- 4:58you want. If you want to just binge a
- 5:00bunch of video episodes in my back catalogue there feel free.
- 5:04Just, you know, all the season 5 and a little bit I think of the
- 5:08end of season four is available on here on Patreon.
- 5:11So have a have fun, go wild, you know, live a little, treat
- 5:16yourself with that dollar pledge.
- 5:20So additionally from that, you know, if you go to the link tree
- 5:22link that's annotated there, you'll find all my other
- 5:27information, all my socials that you can follow me on the

- 5:41far as I'm concerned with my housekeeping stuff.
- 5:44You guys know the drill. Just click that link, tree link
- 5:46and it'll take you where you need to go.
- 5:50And then also be on the lookout for anything that's linked there
- 5:53for Saga. You know, she has a Facebook
- 5:57group. I think it's the Northern Lights
- 6:00collective or something like that, but that'll be linked down
- 6:03below or over there over here, wherever you find the show
- 6:06notes. You know, again, Patreon viewers
- 6:09down in the video description. Follow her there or join that
- 6:13group. I'm in there, not very active in
- 6:15there, but I've joined and and enjoy the stuff that that she
- 6:18and some of the other members of that group and then the admins
- 6:21and the mods put out there. So check all that out.
- 6:26Show the support in any way that you can and let's see what saga
- 6:30has to tell us today with regards to, you know, keeping
- 6:34our lore. We're keeping the lore of of
- 6:36North Eathenry alive through art.
- 6:40Let's get into it. All right, folks.
- 6:44And we are joined here back again return guest, the heathen
- 6:48hedge witch of the UP. We got Saga Ericsson back on the
- 6:52the podcast today. So thank you Saga.
- 6:54Welcome back to the show. Hi, I'm happy to be here.
- 6:58Great. Happy to have you.
- 7:00We were talking a bit offline about the, the, the
- 7:04uncharacteristic changes of the weather.
- 7:06I know you're, you're up there in the far north with some, what
- 7:09I would consider more seasonable weather for me if I was having
- 7:13to pick anything instead of this, you know, oppressive heat
- 7:16and humidity. But it is definitely odd out
- 7:19here. I know a lot of folks are
- 7:20experiencing things that are just not normal weather wise.
- 7:24So I'm glad that you're at least not having to deal with this
- 7:27sauna of a situation that we have down here in Tennessee and
- 7:31other places. Yeah, it's not near as extreme
- 7:34up here. Yeah, and you were saying before
- 7:38that, before we started, before we started recording that your,
- 7:42your herbs are liking the weather too.
- 7:44So you're having a good, good wet season?
- 7:47Yeah, it's, yeah, it's a very good, good mix of both wet and
- 7:55sun. And so the plant life here has
- 7:58just gone crazy for the herbalists out there.
- 8:04The Saint John's wort that grows wild up here is normally only
- 8:09about a foot high this time of year.
- 8:12Right now, the Saint John's wort is about 3 feet tall.
- 8:17So it is just huge. Huge.
- 8:22And it's everywhere. Yeah.
- 8:24Yeah. It's it's been a very prolific
- 8:26growing season up here. Fantastic.
- 8:31And for everybody that's new to the show or that doesn't know
- 8:34who you are, I, I've, I've told people you, you are a return
- 8:37guest. You obviously have been on the
- 8:39show before and we're going to have the folks that want to
- 8:41check out our, our last episode where you came on.
- 8:45But for those that are new or haven't caught it yet and just
- 8:48want to a little bit of background on who you are, would
- 8:50you mind sort of introducing yourself and letting the people
- 8:53know who you are and what you do?
- 8:56Sure, I'm Saga Ericsson and I'm a Norse animist, which means I I
- 9:05find the divine in everything around me.
- 9:09I find I find our gods and everything around me.
- 9:12And my Norse animism of course, the Norse part.
- 9:17I follow the Norse gods, I'm a lifelong artist, and I live on
- 9:24the border of far northern Wisconsin and the Upper
- 9:27Peninsula of Michigan, about 15 minutes from Lake Superior,
- 9:32where my husband and I are living.
- 9:35A sustainability experiment right on on the UP border,
- 9:41trying to leave as small a footprint on the earth as we
- 9:46possibly can. As a as a heathen Hedgewich.
- 9:52I am also a Githia, an ordained Githia for Awake in the North,
- 9:56as well as my own group, the Northern Lights Collective.
- 10:01I am a safe worker. I'm a vulva.
- 10:06I have been walking this path for over 35 years and it's one
- 10:12of those kind of things that I just can't get enough.
- 10:16I keep learning more all the time and as an artist, my work
- 10:22is how I keep the lore alive and it's it's kind of how I got my
- 10:27name as well. Yeah, saga, right.
- 10:32I mean, that's a a literal saga and and storytelling, visual
- 10:37storytelling is, is definitely a way of, of doing that, telling
- 10:40the sagas through through vision, you know, the visionary
- 10:44arts or the yeah. And I write to go with a lot of
- 10:48these things. So a lot of a lot of the pieces
- 10:51that we'll be sharing today, I have poetry too.
- 10:55I have stories too. Some of them are already
- 11:01illustrations that are due to be published soon in in a lore
- 11:06book. So it's it's kind of an exciting
- 11:09culmination of like the masterpiece.
- 11:12Now that I'm in my 60s, this, the masterworks coming together
- 11:16of art and story. And yeah, to me it's just very
- 11:21exciting. It is I, you know, and I'm
- 11:25excited that that first of all, you wanted to come on here and
- 11:28give people a chance to see the art now has what what what we
- 11:32are going to be sharing today. Again, for those that are
- 11:34listening to this, this this episode is going to be a lot of,
- 11:39you know, presentations. We're going to be seeing a lot
- 11:42of things that if you're just listening to this, you're
- 11:45missing out. If, if, if you're not going to
- 11:47be watching this. So as I said before, you know,
- 11:50you'll definitely, if you if, if, if, if any a time on the
- 11:53random heathen rambling podcast that there was for you to want
- 11:57to see what's going on now is it?
- 12:00So head on over to Patreon, become a patron for just the
- 12:02dollar to, to, to watch this at the very least, so you can see
- 12:06everything that we're talking about.
- 12:08But the the art that you're going to be sharing with us
- 12:11today. Saga has this.
- 12:14Who else has seen what we're about to see?
- 12:18A lot of a lot of the main body of the slides that we'll be
- 12:25sharing today are pieces that I've actually done quite well
- 12:32with in our community selling prints and greeting cards.
- 12:36So a lot of your viewership may already have some of my work.
- 12:42My, my pieces are kind of scattered all over North America
- 12:49and Western Europe. And I think there's a couple
- 12:53pieces in Australia and South America too.
- 12:56But there I, it's kind of a, an inch.
- 13:01I have a niche market of very dedicated collectors.
- 13:06So so some of your listeners may already have some of my pieces.
- 13:11It wouldn't surprise me just, you know, as as, as, as your
- 13:16reputation precedes you and as long as you've been active in
- 13:19the various capacities that you have been.
- 13:21And yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if, if the folks that are
- 13:23listening and maybe even watching this on Patreon have
- 13:26been like, ah, yeah, I can't wait to see that and more.
- 13:28And, but are these, how do you, how do you capture this your,
- 13:34your art? Are they, you know, watercolors,
- 13:37paintings, What's, what's your normal methodology?
- 13:40Most of my pieces are watercolor and ink.
- 13:45I I once in a while work in acrylics or oils or pastels,
- 13:50even graphite. But my my main go to is
- 13:54watercolor and ink and predominantly watercolor pencils
- 13:59because I'm as a watercolor artist.
- 14:03I'm not one that works wet on wet.
- 14:06I'm a little bit of a control freak and so the the colored
- 14:09pencil work, I can almost sculpt on the page with color.
- 14:16So I can, you know, vary things with, you know, different water
- 14:21application with these pencils to make them rich and vibrant
- 14:26instead of voluminous and flowing like a more free form
- 14:30watercolor. So as an example, here's here's
- 14:35a watercolor and ink original of the rune I was and I don't know
- 14:44if you can see close here. But it's like going up the tree.
- 14:49Yes, yes, and it it this is this is a rune that blah, blah blah.
- 14:55There we go. This rune features a lot in a
- 15:01healing system I'm developing, but that's that'll be for
- 15:04another time. That's exciting.
- 15:08I love, I love Rune. First of all, I love the runes.
- 15:13Anyway, I've I've picked up. That part.
- 15:15My heathenry as as a bit of a runer, you know, and, and
- 15:18studying the runes and not just the elder Futhark, but also the
- 15:22Anglo-Saxon Futhorc and the younger Futhark.
- 15:25And I'm really intrigued about how contemporary heathens one
- 15:30particular fellow who has come up with an American futharch
- 15:34system to to reflect, yeah, to to reflect the the, the, the
- 15:39magical and the linguistic sides of how the runes were, were,
- 15:43were sounds than anything. So to have a runic system that
- 15:47reflects the spoken American English language, you know, it's
- 15:53fascinating. And I and I love really
- 15:55immersing myself in that. So seeing them, seeing them
- 15:57portrayed in different ways through art.
- 16:00I'm I'm all about it. So I'm excited.
- 16:03To check out my upcoming book. Yeah, which which I know you've
- 16:07got several publications out already.
- 16:10Just as a side note does as as we're going through and talking
- 16:12you you're published, you're published author, I'm assuming
- 16:17where where can people get that? We'll we'll link some.
- 16:18Stuff more of published more of published illustrator.
- 16:22My written works are not pub. Well, no, I take that back.
- 16:26I do have I do have one of my written pieces published in the
- 16:32book of Heathen prayers. That's put out by Awake in the
- 16:35North and it's it's an excellent, excellent book of
- 16:41heathen prayers written by various members in that
- 16:46community. But my my published pieces are
- 16:50mainly illustration. Once Upon a time, there was a
- 16:54writer by the name of Swain Wodening from.
- 16:59The White Marsh, right Or well, him and Eric.
- 17:03Are yeah, him and Eric Gordoning.
- 17:04I, I, I illustrated his last book before before he he stopped
- 17:12writing as a heathen. So that was the first of my
- 17:17published illustrations and the last two of Kurt Bookstrat's
- 17:22books. I had the great pleasure of, of
- 17:26doing the the illustrations for both of his last two books.
- 17:33And I am currently finishing the edits on a Norse lore book for
- 17:43children of all ages. I'm hoping that it'll be
- 17:47published for Ewell. So I'm I'm really hoping that'll
- 17:51be out by Ewell. Wonderful.
- 17:54And we may have, we may have talked about this the last time
- 17:57you were on, but any, anywhere that people can get this stuff
- 18:01make please make sure. That I get some.
- 18:03Links so that way I can direct people that want to support you
- 18:07in that way and and start collecting maybe themselves.
- 18:11Awesome. Yeah, I can.
- 18:12I can make sure to provide links for you.
- 18:16Excellent. I would love to start showing
- 18:20the folks your artwork now and and we can kind of talk through
- 18:24it. So I'm going to be now folks
- 18:28that are listening right now is your chance get over to Patreon,
- 18:31become a patron there to to see what it is that we're going to
- 18:33be showing you. Because now we're going to start
- 18:35looking at this artwork that Saga is and has been working on.
- 18:41So on the screen we've got we're going to be we're we're first
- 18:46going to be showing, I guess this this series of in your the
- 18:50Norse lore series, right? Yeah.
- 18:55So this is a series of 24 different slides that we're
- 18:58going to be going through. This is this being the first
- 19:00one. So would you mind just walking
- 19:05us briefly through what we're about to be seeing or what we're
- 19:08seeing right now? And then like, what it what?
- 19:10What's this, Morse? Lore series This is This is my
- 19:14first version of Ask an Embla from the etic poem the Voluspa.
- 19:25Where in the poem of the the divine brothers Odin, Villi and
- 19:32V are walking along the beach and there they came upon two
- 19:37logs just floating lifeless in the water, an ash log and an Elm
- 19:44log and into these logs they breathed life breath blooming
- 19:52hue an ask an Ambla. The ash and the Elm were born of
- 19:59trees. So Gaz, Olden, Billy and V made
- 20:04the very first humans from an ash tree and an Elm tree, and
- 20:08that's what this particular illustration depicts is.
- 20:12That be coming from the trees into human form and I've got all
- 20:18the divine beings off to the sideline blowing breath into
- 20:22them. The the original.
- 20:25You can actually see the breath coming from the mouth of Odin.
- 20:30So, so that's Askanembla and it is a a watercolor on on ink or
- 20:36no watercolor and ink on paper. Yeah, I love the integration of,
- 20:44you know, Oscar and Emblem coming forth out of the tree.
- 20:47Really, it really captures the what the story is, is, is
- 20:51talking about. Beautiful, beautiful depiction.
- 20:55Thank you Fire on the Mountain, an annual men's spiritual
- 20:59retreat and leadership summit, is sponsored in part by the

- 21:39them for Commission work at theenos.foxcreations@gmail.com.
- 21:43Thank you to the Norse Fox Creations for helping sponsor
- 21:47Fire on the Mountain. Thank you.
- 21:52This is a go ahead. No, I was going to just say now
- 21:57for it's a boulder, I guess. Yes, yeah, yeah, Boulder the
- 22:01beautiful. And he was the the most flawless
- 22:07of the Acer. Balder was the son of Frigga and
- 22:13Odin and he was bright and shining and pure.
- 22:17And they found he was immune from harm.
- 22:24So the gods and goddesses would make sport of throwing
- 22:30projectiles, weapons, everything at the God Balder.
- 22:36And then one one night I don't I don't have it right in my mind
- 22:41if it's Freya or not. Freya, Freya or Odin has the
- 22:44dream of Balder's death. But Odin goes to goes to hell to
- 22:51talk to Hella where they find this hall all decked out in gold
- 22:57waiting for Balder to arrive. So the goddess Freya went to all
- 23:04of the living creatures all over Midgard, all over all the
- 23:09world's, and got a pledge from each one of them that they would
- 23:13never harm her son. But she failed to get the pledge
- 23:19of one harmless little plant, the mistletoe.
- 23:23And in this painting, Valdez is actually holding the mistletoe
- 23:29in his hands, which was the one weapon that that killed him,
- 23:34fired by his own brother at the hands of Loki.
- 23:38So this is this is my depiction of Balder and it's watercolor
- 23:43and ink on cardstock. Nice.
- 23:49So vibrant. The colors really are they
- 23:51they're, they're beautiful. Thank you.
- 23:54I I like intense. All right now we have looks like
- 24:01Braggy with a with a a liar or Tagel harp or something.
- 24:06Yeah, I'm, I'm not quite sure if it's a liar or what kind of harp
- 24:10it's called, but yeah, this is, this is the God Braggy.
- 24:13And he's he's looking at his muses out the window, one of
- 24:18which is Freya and the other one is Frigga.
- 24:21And Braggy was the Bard of the gods.
- 24:24He is the God of inspiration and song and and stories.
- 24:31You know, what I think is fun is to think about is, is the
- 24:34connection of the gods and the, and the things that we find
- 24:36associated or, or that we find that are that they are
- 24:39associated with. You know, Broggy being a the,
- 24:43the kind of the, the God of the skalds.
- 24:45You know, the bards, as you say, the the storytellers, and he has
- 24:49a wife in the stories who is Edun.
- 24:51And Edun is is the keeper of the apples that keep the gods young.
- 24:57And I don't know, I always thought that that was like an
- 24:59interesting an interesting pair to consider.
- 25:03You know how the how the two that.
- 25:06Is an interesting pairing. You know how music kind of keeps
- 25:09us all connected and, and, and brings out like the the
- 25:12nostalgia, the memorabilia, like we remember things from a song
- 25:17that we heard one time or whatever, you know, and it's
- 25:20almost it's keeping us young in a way.
- 25:21So I don't know if it's an interesting thing like I.
- 25:23I like that. Kind of amusing, definitely.
- 25:30Oh wow, and who we have here? This is the goddess Air, and Air
- 25:37is the goddess of healing, and she's in.
- 25:41She's got a basket in in her arms that has all kinds of
- 25:44different healing herbs. And behind her are birches and
- 25:49willows that are medicinal plants.
- 25:52And there's Saint John's wort growing all around her that are
- 25:56all these are all medicinal plants.
- 25:58And so air is the goddess of healing and she is but to be one
- 26:04of Frigga's handmaidens or even an aspect of Frigga herself.
- 26:09And so I, I, she's actually based on one of one of my dear
- 26:18friends who's a fellow heathen in the Twin City area who is a
- 26:23healer and a midwife, so. Oh wow, what a beautiful
- 26:29dedication to to to your friend there how to be to be sort of
- 26:33depicted in the more like immortalized almost in a way
- 26:37through art like this. And I loved the, the touches
- 26:39that you gave of, you know, you could have put anything in the
- 26:43background, but your focus was on healing plants and healing
- 26:47trees and then those healing properties.
- 26:49And, and that's a really great touch to the, the, the, the
- 26:54physician of the gods. I think she sometimes gets
- 26:56referred to or it as. Thank you all.
- 27:02Right, I see cats and ladies, so this has to be Freya.
- 27:09This is Lady Freya, the goddess of love and beauty, and she's
- 27:16draped over her shoulders. She's got her Falcon cloak and
- 27:19of course she has her her great cats that pull her chariot.
- 27:24And she is also a mistress of save.
- 27:28She's one of the original Vanik goddesses who was traded during
- 27:33the War between the Gods where she became an official Azure
- 27:39Goddess and everybody in all the world's craves Freya's hand in
- 27:46marriage. That's right.
- 27:49She's got that. She's got it going on, as I used
- 27:52to say. And she's done some things, you
- 27:56know, she, she's been around the block a time or two for a thing
- 27:59or two. A time or two, yeah.
- 28:01Loki. Loki has some stories to tell
- 28:03about that. Yeah, yeah, the doors.
- 28:05You know, I call them bragging rights, but all right.
- 28:12Beautiful. All right.
- 28:14And Speaking of the the the Acer Vanier War, here we have phrase
- 28:18Freya's brother, right? Yep, this is Freya's brother
- 28:22Frey. Freya is the Lord of the land
- 28:25and again like you just said he is one of the Vanit gods that
- 28:28was exchanged in the exchange of hostage gods between the Acer
- 28:34and the Vaner. And he is the Lord of the land.
- 28:39I always consider him like I I mix my pantheons from time to
- 28:45time and to me he's also the Green Man.
- 28:49He's also her and the hunter. I always see him as a a gentle
- 28:56forest guardian in in my own practice.
- 29:00And here he is riding the golden boar Gullenbersti, who was
- 29:06created by the dwarves as there was a there was a challenge in
- 29:15in the lore where Loki went to the dwarves initially to get
- 29:21hair for the goddess Sif. And but he also challenged the
- 29:28two different sets of dwarves who could make the best gifts
- 29:32and garb and all this good stuff for the gods as a as a contest.
- 29:37And Gullenbersti, the golden battle bore was among the
- 29:44treasures created by the dwarves.
- 29:47And Gullenbersti was the the Noble ride of the Godfrey.
- 29:55Yeah, another fun thing. I, I, I recently I was talking
- 30:00with somebody since we're talking about, you know, Frey
- 30:02and, and his his his name Frey or Freyr even is is is more of a
- 30:09title like you say, you know, Lord of the land or Lord of the
- 30:11earth or I think he's sometimes called God of the world.
- 30:16Is it's it's a it's it's a title more than a name in his, you
- 30:20know, the old name of of Eng. You know Ingvi Freyr was an old
- 30:24name of the same deity and he is AII heard the term used
- 30:30recently, God of the Seed, which I thought was an interesting
- 30:33canning. He is a fertility God.
- 30:36Yes. Exactly.
- 30:37So that's that makes sense. Yeah, Yeah, 'cause he is a
- 30:40fertility God. Yep, very nice.
- 30:44I love the the boar Goulden. Thirsty golden bristle, right?
- 30:49Beautiful in the mountains in the background.
- 30:52Love it, Mama Frigg. Mama Frigg Yep, and this is this
- 31:01is one of my depictions of Frigga and she is the mother
- 31:05goddess. She is the wife of Odin, the
- 31:08mother of of Baldur and many, many other gods and goddesses.
- 31:16She is the goddess of hearth and home and nurturing and
- 31:20mothering. And I have her here sitting
- 31:24before a Rowan tree which is also called a mountain ash.
- 31:29And I don't know why I am so. I always put ash trees like this
- 31:38with Mama Friga. She sometimes she is seen as a
- 31:44goddess of weaving or spinning and any, any of the home crafts
- 31:53for me. She's, you know, a, a very
- 31:57helpful deity that I call upon a lot when I want to learn more
- 32:06about family matters or healing or, you know, even even my own
- 32:13personal struggles as a wife and mother and grandmother.
- 32:18I I take those things to Friga. Now what is she holding in her,
- 32:24in her hand, across her lap there?
- 32:26She has a distaff which is an implement of spinning.
- 32:34OK. Spinning both flax and wool were
- 32:39were women's work for the most part.
- 32:42And it is, you know how clothing came to be is the spinning of
- 32:50wool, spinning of threads. And these threads are also
- 32:54become metaphor for spinning threads into the web of weird.
- 33:02So yeah. Yeah, the Weavers, you know,
- 33:10that was definitely, like you said, it was.
- 33:12It was the work of women. I think that's why a lot of
- 33:15times, like in the lore we hear like how Odin was kind of mocked
- 33:21or looked down upon for having their showing an interest in
- 33:23safe work 'cause that was deemed as you know, women's business.
- 33:28Right. You know, art is subjective.
- 33:32I think you would agree. People catch different things
- 33:36that maybe even the artist themself hadn't intended for.
- 33:40And I'm just going to say, I don't know if you made a
- 33:43conscious effort on this, but to me, when I see this piece, it
- 33:48looks as though she's sitting by or in a marshy area.
- 33:52The the the vegetation behind her and even the way her dress
- 33:56kind of cascades down to the to the to the ground reminds me a
- 34:00bit of of a of a marshy or a water.
- 34:03Area, yes. And her hall is in a marshy
- 34:07area, Yeah. That's why, you know, and I
- 34:10don't know if that was intended. It wasn't intended, but it kind
- 34:14of happened that way. And but yeah, she her hall is in
- 34:18a marshy area, as is my namesake saga.
- 34:26Her hall is called Sokhebek, which means sinking floor, so
- 34:33her her house was in the swamp too.
- 34:35Yeah. And I, I have an, I have an
- 34:39affinity. I'm sorry.
- 34:42It's good. Yeah, marshy areas.
- 34:45I like the where I grew up in in the northeast was Shinnecock
- 34:53Indians of the Algonquin nation. And it means like shiny rock.
- 34:57But they were, they were in the marshy areas.
- 35:00And then a lot of my ancestors from Europe came across from
- 35:06areas that were very similar. So, you know, Denmark and or not
- 35:11Denmark, but the Netherlands, sorry, the Dutch.
- 35:14So like the Netherlands tends to be a pretty marshy area.
- 35:16Yeah. My family's from the Netherlands
- 35:19as well. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:21Beautiful piece. I love it.
- 35:22Thank you. Thank you.
- 35:25This one's a signomic 1. Yes, it is.
- 35:28Tell us about it. This is from the Well of Weird.
- 35:33And so the the smaller figures that are seeded are the Weird
- 35:38sisters. They are are the giant
- 35:43progenitors of everything really, because they they, they
- 35:50are timeless. They are the past.
- 35:53URD, URD, Verdandi and Skull. The past, the present and that
- 35:59which is to be or to become. And the figure in the feathered
- 36:06cloak. It can be either Frigga or
- 36:10Freya, depending on your preferences.
- 36:14I didn't have a specific goddess in mind but she is holding a
- 36:17distaff and behind her is a cauldron which is standing in
- 36:23for the well. The the three sisters are
- 36:28spinning and weaving and cutting the threads so they are in the
- 36:33active creating life. Really, they are setting the
- 36:38fibers of life into being by spinning and weaving and then
- 36:43cutting once once a life is done.
- 36:47So there's an awful lot of things happening here.
- 36:52And in the background is is the rune algae's holding up their
- 36:56hall. So it just, it's kind of cool.
- 37:01Very cool. I mean I noticed obviously if I,
- 37:03you know anybody that's into runes, they're going to see that
- 37:06image and they're going to think algae's you know right away.
- 37:10It is it is also interesting to consider how much of A support
- 37:16that that in like construction, you know, that, that, that,
- 37:20that, that that symbol is, is a support column.
- 37:23You know, it's a support area, you know, when you see it in a
- 37:26lot of structures all over the place.
- 37:27But you know, another interesting thing to take away
- 37:31from the art pieces that yes, you have a ruin of protection
- 37:35there, but it's it's a ruin of support.
- 37:37You could say maybe you know. Protection, support and it's
- 37:44it's a ruin associated with the God Heimdall who was the teacher
- 37:49of mankind. So here we have a setting in a
- 37:52room where we have fates being woven and spun under the support
- 37:59of Algies. And in that you have a whole
- 38:03learning experience as well. So it's like a multi faceted
- 38:07canning for all the things happening in in there.
- 38:13Yeah, I really like this one. Like I just like analyzing and
- 38:18seeing all the different things going on.
- 38:19And the fact that you have, you know, this sort of central
- 38:22figure as you know Freya, whoever you want to identify
- 38:27being the one that kind of holds the distaff and then the the the
- 38:31Noroneer being there to do the weaving and didn't do the work.
- 38:37It's beautiful. Thank you.
- 38:42Wow, what a. Colorful rainbow brite picture
- 38:46here. Definitely Rainbow Brite.
- 38:50So in the previous slide we had the rune algies, which is Rep.
- 38:57You know the God named doll is often represented with that
- 39:02rune. He is the son of nine waves and
- 39:09he's also called the the teacher of mankind.
- 39:15There are, I don't remember the story, but he is the in this in
- 39:21the lore, he came to three different classes of humans and
- 39:28slept with them overnight. Amma and I, it was a
- 39:35grandmother, it was a mother, you know, grandmother,
- 39:38grandfather, grandmother, grandfather, great grandmother.
- 39:42So these, these three different classes of humans, he slept with
- 39:46each one of them to kind of like make the seed stock for the
- 39:51Earls, the thralls, the serfs, the the particular caste system
- 39:57that was prevalent in medieval Europe.
- 40:02And he's holding the galler horn, which is said to be blown
- 40:08at the beginning of Ragnarok, which is like the Nordic
- 40:12Armageddon. So yeah.
- 40:16And so yeah, he's he's here in this image blowing the galler
- 40:19horn as the flames are all kind of portend, you know, not
- 40:25portending. What's the word?
- 40:29I don't know the word right now. Starting the war.
- 40:33Yeah, it's kind of it's, it's like, get ready, guys.
- 40:37You know, buckle up and here comes.
- 40:39Raise. Yourself.
- 40:41Yeah. So we've got the flames that are
- 40:44kind of like an indication of the the the the destruction of
- 40:47the gods, the twilight of the gods.
- 40:49Maybe even we've got him standing here blowing a horn,
- 40:54his Galla horn, the two to announce or incite the sort of
- 40:58the beginning. Do I see a beast before him as
- 41:04well? There is a goat a.
- 41:07Goat. There is a goat in the picture.
- 41:10I don't remember why. I believe goats were associated
- 41:14with Hamdahl, but I'm I don't take that for a shirt because I
- 41:19just don't remember at this point.
- 41:23The sky, it's the rainbow colors in the sky represent Bifrost.
- 41:29Heimdell is also the guardian of the Bifrost Bridge and he he
- 41:35kind of policies who gets to go to Asgard and visit the gods.
- 41:40So anyone that's seen the Thor movie?
- 41:45He's Oh yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, He's the watchman of
- 41:48the. I mean, yeah, the Watchman of
- 41:50the Gods, you know, Son of Nine Mothers, 9 waves, you know, he's
- 41:53got these different things that in the stories get told about
- 41:56him. And interestingly enough,
- 41:58there's, you know, not a lot like historically or
- 42:02archaeologically that that point to there being a huge focus on
- 42:06him in regions. So he's very mystical too.
- 42:09I feel like there's this there's this mystique element about him.
- 42:14Beautiful, beautiful representation, though.
- 42:16I love the the the touches in the sky.
- 42:18How you how you focused on that as the the representation of the
- 42:21beef roster by Frost Bridge? All right, folks, I wonder who
- 42:25we got here. We got a sort of half and half
- 42:28thing going on. Yep, she's She's one of my
- 42:32favorite goddesses. This is the goddess Hell or
- 42:37hella she is. She is the Lady of Helheim.
- 42:42Where in the lore it is said those who do not die in battle
- 42:48go. You know those that die of old
- 42:51age or sickness go to Hella's Halls.
- 42:55But Hella's halls were also all decked out in gold and finery to
- 43:02receive Heimdall. Now, he didn't die of either old
- 43:06age or sickness. I yeah, I think the guy.
- 43:12'S or baller, Baller, hamdall or balder.
- 43:15Balder, thank you. Yeah, thank.
- 43:17You I was making sure I didn't miss a.
- 43:19No, no, that was my bad. Yeah, Thank you.
- 43:24When? When Balder was due to go to
- 43:27hell after after he was killed. Yeah, the hell.
- 43:32His halls were all decked out. Now in the lore Hella is the
- 43:37child of Loki and the giantess Anger Boda along with the the
- 43:44Wolfenrus and the Midgard Serpent Yorman Gander.
- 43:49So when these three monstrous children were were fathered by
- 43:55Loki they were each cast to a different world.
- 43:59The the the Midgard Serpent was cast into the ocean to embrace
- 44:07Midgard, Phanerus the wolf was raised by the God Tear until he
- 44:14became too dangerous and had to be bound, and Hal was given the
- 44:20realm of her own. Now makes me wonder what we
- 44:26don't know. What wasn't in the Lord that
- 44:31this particular goddess was given her whole realm.
- 44:38So I never saw hell as being a bad goddess or a bad place.
- 44:45In my own journeys and experiences, I've always found
- 44:48her to be a goddess of compassion, a goddess of
- 44:52peacefulness, a goddess of of someone that you can pour your
- 44:59deepest darkest shadows and sorrows to and she will take
- 45:05them. So I'm thinking that there had
- 45:08to have been bigger and greater stories about her and a lot of
- 45:13the other gods and goddesses that never made it into written
- 45:17lore that she had of realm all of her own.
- 45:24So that that's my two cents worth on on Hella.
- 45:29And she is one of my favorites because I have always found her
- 45:32to be more compassionate than terrifying, even though, you
- 45:40know, she's depicted as being half, half dark or rotting and
- 45:45half light. We're kind of like that as
- 45:51humans. You know, there's we have a
- 45:53shadow side, we have a dark side and we must be integrated to be
- 45:59whole. We're because we're not all one
- 46:02light and dark. We are.
- 46:04Both yeah, yeah, I, I've, I've had my own, you know, my
- 46:08personal UPG on on hell in in my own experiences that are very
- 46:14similar to what you're saying. It's it's a bit like with her
- 46:18for me. It's always been very, you know,
- 46:21it, you get it is what it is. You know, there's no, she's
- 46:25compassionate, but it's not, it's not out of yeah, there's
- 46:27not, it's not compassion out of I feel sorry for you.
- 46:31It's it's compassionate. Well, just this is what it is.
- 46:34You can't bargain with hell no. And and but it just is what it
- 46:39is. And that's in, in that, you
- 46:42know, there there's some comfort, I think.
- 46:45She will live your sorrows with you as you recount with stories.
- 46:51Yeah. And she listens to the stories
- 46:54of the dead. It's a great.
- 46:57One way of the stories listen to they can grow.
- 47:01Yes, yeah. And your and your, your, your
- 47:03vision, your representation that it is, it's the, the the split
- 47:06down the middle, sort of half rotting, half living it.
- 47:10It is such a vibrant difference. You know, you've got one side
- 47:13that is, you know, young and full of life, and the other
- 47:16which is decayed and and rotting.
- 47:19Visceral. Visceral.
- 47:20Yeah. Beautiful.
- 47:23Thank you, This is another depiction of hell where the dark
- 47:30is just in shadow. Now this one is a graphite it
- 47:37looks like or your description is graphite.
- 47:38The one prior was a watercolor I.
- 47:41Think yeah, watercolor and ink were were the two the the
- 47:45previous slide and this one is, is one of my graphite pieces.
- 47:48So it's all pencil in just various shades to depict light
- 47:56and dark and, you know, and she's kind of walking in the
- 48:01balance of both. Do you remember what I mean?
- 48:06So we, I don't, I don't know. I don't know which slide we're
- 48:08on. But in terms of seeing different
- 48:11gods being portrayed or goddesses being portrayed
- 48:13through your art, this is the first we've come across where
- 48:16hell gets two different depictions or two different
- 48:19slides. Was there was there a like a a a
- 48:24focus interest on wanting to give her more attention in in
- 48:28your artwork? Yeah, there was.
- 48:30I was doing a journey and of course, my my journeys are Lupg,
- 48:39by the way. Oh, you're, you're very welcome.
- 48:44And anyhow, in this journey, she came to me and, you know, I
- 48:49didn't see her so much as I heard her and she had kind of a
- 48:54pleading voice and said, make me beautiful.
- 48:58So this is this is the image that came from a plea to make
- 49:04her beautiful. And as an artist I find nothing
- 49:11more beautiful than the female form.
- 49:15So there she is. Spectacular.
- 49:19Thank you. I like, I like black and white
- 49:21art, the graphite style. I like the, Yeah, like there's
- 49:27something very ancient feeling about it, you know, it would
- 49:32remind me of a, of a bit more of a primitive style of art, you
- 49:37know, where there wasn't dyes and inks and things to to do it.
- 49:41And there is a lot of beauty to that.
- 49:44Definitely, Yeah. Hey, we talked a little bit
- 49:50about her before. The wife of Braggy, the keeper
- 49:55of, of the apples of youth. And I, I just, to me, this
- 50:01particular illustration is just very youthful because it's, it's
- 50:06vibrant, it's green, it's like springtime.
- 50:09And I have, I have a tree behind my sauna that we actually named
- 50:17for a dune that has golden apples.
- 50:21Every year without fail, it has golden apples.
- 50:24It's just beautiful. So.
- 50:29But yeah, she was. Yeah.
- 50:31Thank you. Golden hair, golden apples.
- 50:37Golden, golden, golden. It's gold.
- 50:39Full of gold. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:41Love it. Loki.
- 50:47Wow, this is an interesting piece.
- 50:52Yeah, he he stands on the Cliff. So tell us about this one here.
- 50:57Behind him is one of his own children, the midguard Serpent.
- 51:03Yorman gander in in the Cold Sea and he is holding Freya's Falcon
- 51:10cloak. So he is mid journey to
- 51:14Yeltenheim where he has borrowed, he has borrowed
- 51:17Freya's cloak so that he can make some kind of bargain with
- 51:22the with the giants. I don't even remember which
- 51:27journey this was 'cause he borrowed the cloak a lot.
- 51:30But anyhow, he this is him with the cloak.
- 51:35He's on an adventure, and behind him is the the, the Midgard
- 51:39Serpent and stormy skies, kind of depicting doom and gloom and,
- 51:45yeah, perilous journeys. And he's kind of a perilous kind
- 51:50of a character, the antagonist and sometimes savior of his own
- 51:59mischief in the lore. Yeah, I, it's, it's interesting.
- 52:04I I recently talked with a fellow who is in in Sweden and
- 52:10out there in this particular area where he lives, he is
- 52:16involved with this group. They call themselves the
- 52:19Congregation of the Smiling God and they are a very heavily
- 52:24focused on the aspects of Loki. Interesting.
- 52:28And they're they're so the, the podcast that by the time people
- 52:33listen to this, they'll have already heard the one about the
- 52:37congregation of the smiling God. So, you know, you can go back
- 52:40and listen to that folks if you need a refresher.
- 52:42But he does talk about their like they have a, a specific
- 52:47perspective of that, you know, Ragnarok has already happened.
- 52:50And they look at things kind of from the perspective of Loki
- 52:53being a survivor of Ragnarok and, and the world as it happens
- 52:58to be after the events of, of such and, and whatnot.
- 53:01So it's, yeah, this, this is interesting.
- 53:06This is, you know, this is one of those, this is one of those
- 53:08depictions of Loki that I don't think I can say of.
- 53:10You know, he, he, he gets like the, the imagery that Loki gets
- 53:14given by different artists seems a bit regurgitated.
- 53:18No disrespect to other artists out there.
- 53:20This does not feel like that at all.
- 53:22It's, it's something very unique and and and original, I have to
- 53:26say. Thank you.
- 53:27Yeah. Nicely done.
- 53:32Money. So Mani is a like a like a
- 53:38celestial body, but a a deified, right?
- 53:42Yes, he in in so much of folklore, the moon is often seen
- 53:49as female, but in the Norse lore it is male.
- 53:54And Mani is the name of the moon.
- 53:58And so I have, I have I anthropomorphize many, many
- 54:03things when I'm illustrating everything becomes people.
- 54:09And so here is Mani as the moon and the tides are rising and you
- 54:15know, and in our natural world, tides go in, tides go out.
- 54:20Can't explain. That.
- 54:23Well, they are, yeah. Yeah.
- 54:24But yeah, here we've got tides happening, and the moon gets
- 54:31credit or blame for a lot of our human behavior, animal behavior.
- 54:42You know, we don't see as much variations in people's
- 54:46personality traits with the seasons of the sun, but the
- 54:50phases of the moon tend to make humans kind of wonky.
- 54:55So any help? This is this is my depiction of
- 54:59Mani, the moon as you know, and like, like most of my pieces,
- 55:07this this is based on a person I know who's just a wonderful,
- 55:12wonderful writer and reminds me of the moon.
- 55:17So. You're right with like how you
- 55:21said, with how, you know, the human emotions and behaviors
- 55:28tend to get credited to what Well, it must be a full moon,
- 55:31you know, or whatever. I, I, I think yeah, right.
- 55:36And even though our that the word lunatic, right, has the
- 55:40word Luna, which is a cognate to the, you know, lunar meaning the
- 55:44moon. So yeah, there's this gives me
- 55:48some, it kind of gives me vibes of like Van Gogh's Starry Night
- 55:55just a tad. Oh yeah, I can see that that
- 55:58that wasn't my intent, but I can definitely see that.
- 56:01Fantastic. One of my favorite pieces.
- 56:04Yeah, I I love Van Gogh's Starry Night.
- 56:07I I really like this. This is beautiful.
- 56:09The color scheme that you chose, the silvers, the Blues, the like
- 56:13very lunar, very nice night, night time.
- 56:17I love it. Here we go.
- 56:22The laughing Odin, the old man so love.
- 56:28It. I, I, I have a lot, a lot of
- 56:32different depictions of Odin, 'cause he's the All Father after
- 56:38all. So it's like what, what he then
- 56:40out there doesn't have some kind of affinity for Odin.
- 56:44And again UPGI have felt his presence since I was a very
- 56:54small child and just didn't know who he was.
- 56:58All I know is he was always there to talk to and behind him
- 57:05is my version of Igdrasil. And I always see Igdrasil as
- 57:10female. So like tree of life, in a lot
- 57:14of pan pagandom, the tree tends to have a female form and the
- 57:23the Ravens Hugin and Munin are depicted as well.
- 57:28Odin of course is a wanderer and seeks for knowledge.
- 57:32And the Ravens Hugin and Munin are thought and memory, and they
- 57:37soar across all the lands to collect information and
- 57:41knowledge, knowledge, knowledge for Odin, who's always seeking
- 57:46for war. Yeah, yeah, the the wide brimmed
- 57:53hat, you know, very wizardly, which in the lore he does get
- 57:58described as in one of his many names and many descripting
- 58:03descriptive things about him. He does get described as you
- 58:07know, wearing a wide brimmed hat, a blue blue cloak or the
- 58:11color blue often gets associated with Odin.
- 58:17He he, he works out too in your depiction.
- 58:20Oh yeah, yeah, he's off. He's really.
- 58:23Yeah, he's cut, man. Like.
- 58:26I I have to interject a a version I'm working on right now
- 58:30of him where here we go. OK, hold on just a second.
- 58:37Let me let me do this here and get so that people can see a
- 58:40little bit better, OK? Oh yeah.
- 58:42This is a work in progress. Yeah.
- 58:47Oh, wow. All right.
- 58:52That's this is something you sent me when you first sent me
- 58:58your e-mail. That was like, that was the
- 59:00intro, like, hey, I want to talk about this.
- 59:02Here's here's something I'm working on.
- 59:04Yeah. Where he's like.
- 59:08Yeah, he is. It's, it's hard to see here, but
- 59:14he is swinging from a rope that has been broken from the tree.
- 59:20He's, you know, this is a where he is been taken over by divine
- 59:28madness. You know, I know that I hung
- 59:31from a windless tree all nights of nine, given to Odin myself
- 59:36unto myself from that tree from which no man knows where of the
- 59:40roots rise. None gave me bread, none gave me
- 59:44drink. And I took up the runes roaring.
- 59:48I took them and fell back from the tree and from a word to a
- 59:53word. I was led to a word, from a deed
- 59:57to the next deed. And that, you know, it's it's
- 59:59kind of a form of divine madness that that happened in this nine
- 1:00:06day, nine night initiation where in Nordic terms it was a
- 1:00:13shamanic vision quest. Where he sacrificed his own eye
- 1:00:19to gain this knowledge. What sane man does this?
- 1:00:24So and you know, yeah. So, yeah, I had to, I had to
- 1:00:32interject with the with the, the, the, the, the, the
- 1:00:35Arunatal. That's what I'm calling that
- 1:00:37particular piece. It's great.
- 1:00:39It's a great depiction. I love that piece so much.
- 1:00:41Yeah. Thank you.
- 1:00:44Yeah, I mean, look like you gotta be like you're gonna get
- 1:00:46shredded if you're just hanging from a tree for a week and a
- 1:00:49half, right? Like you're gonna.
- 1:00:50You're gonna get shredded. Especially no food.
- 1:00:53Yeah, I mean, 7% body fat tops. Right, it's the it's it's the
- 1:01:01Norse shaman cuts like diet system for.
- 1:01:04Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:01:06Oh. Yeah, love it.
- 1:01:10All right, let's move on here. Oh, what we got here.
- 1:01:14This is different. This is Rise from the Ashes, and
- 1:01:19it is a portrayal of Golvig's ordeal, the goddess that the
- 1:01:29goddess Golvig, the creature Golvig the giantess hath.
- 1:01:35She was a witch who for her knowledge was burned three times
- 1:01:41by the gods, and she came back stronger every time.
- 1:01:47She's also called Goldgreed Golvig Goldgreed, and she is
- 1:01:55sometimes thought to be an aspect of Freya or Freya
- 1:02:00herself. And the burning of Golvig is
- 1:02:04what started the war between the gods and she was.
- 1:02:10I actually don't remember what happened to her once she was
- 1:02:13resurrected a third time, but this particular painting is kind
- 1:02:19of a feminist cry of, you know, like in Harry Potter lore,
- 1:02:26Phoenix rising from the ashes. Rise from the Ashes is something
- 1:02:31that Gullwig did three times over, where she overcame the
- 1:02:39torture of being burned. So there we go.
- 1:02:45Very intense. Thank you.
- 1:02:50Oh. Less intense and very cute.
- 1:02:54Yeah, yeah, so youthful and so, so warm, but like, not like fire
- 1:03:01warm. Not fire warm, but cozy warm.
- 1:03:05You know this is the warm you feel on a really bright late
- 1:03:09summer day when the sun is just right.
- 1:03:13It gives you comfort instead of sweat.
- 1:03:17You know, just enough chill in the air.
- 1:03:19This is the goddess Sif. Sif of the golden hair, sick Sif
- 1:03:24of the golden grain. She is the personification of
- 1:03:29wheat ripening in the field. She's the wife of Thor, who in
- 1:03:36the middle of the night one time, Loki cut off all her hair
- 1:03:41as a prank and under threat of of death at the hands of the
- 1:03:49mighty God Thor, Loki went to the dwarves and commissioned
- 1:03:53them to make for her gold hair, spun from real gold that would
- 1:03:59attach as soon as it touched her head.
- 1:04:02So one of the gifts and treasures that the dwarves made
- 1:04:06was Sif's golden hair. And so here she is the field,
- 1:04:10she is the grain, she is the voluptuous grains ready for
- 1:04:15harvest. And as Thor's wife, she is
- 1:04:21fertility. Thor's hammer is often used in
- 1:04:25fertility rights. Sif is the product of such
- 1:04:29fertility. So that's SIF.
- 1:04:33Maybe I'm just a softy for Thor and and Sif and all that,
- 1:04:37because, you know, our tribe is, is kind of named after Thor, But
- 1:04:40I I really, really like the like how her hair just kind of blends
- 1:04:46into the the field of wheat. You know, it's like, where does
- 1:04:48her hair end in the field start kind of thing and how the the
- 1:04:54you know, the complementary opposites, you know, Thor being
- 1:04:58the sort of brash and and energetic and and rageful almost
- 1:05:02at times, you know, berserker kind of figure among the a
- 1:05:07spear. And then you have the kinder,
- 1:05:09the gentler, the softer, the, you know, counterpart of that
- 1:05:12and, and, and what that needs with people that yeah, the
- 1:05:15balance again, complementary opposites.
- 1:05:18Yeah. Yeah, this, this does feel just
- 1:05:20this feels like a summer in the UP, not a summer in Tennessee.
- 1:05:24No, this is a summer in the UP, Yeah.
- 1:05:28Yeah, yeah, very nice. Love it.
- 1:05:31Thank you. The Sif, Not Sif, the and I.
- 1:05:36It's the Scavi collection. I wrote Sif on there by mistake.
- 1:05:40Scavi's one of my favorite favorite goddesses.
- 1:05:43She is actually a giant. She was the daughter of Thiazzi,
- 1:05:49and she came to Asgard to avenge her father's death.
- 1:05:57She is a goddess of winter, of archery hunting, and she's often
- 1:06:04depicted as the goddess on skis. She lives in the mountains, so
- 1:06:09of course she's a Rhyme Thurs. She's a mountain giant.
- 1:06:14Giant, at any rate. Anyhow, she's one of my
- 1:06:17favorites because winter is my favorite time of year and
- 1:06:20normally in the UP we are neck deep in snow.
- 1:06:26So snowing, snowshoeing, skiing, hunting are are big, big
- 1:06:32activities up here. So she gets scabby gets a lot
- 1:06:37more attention because it's her home.
- 1:06:39It's. Like it's like home turf for
- 1:06:41Scottie. Yeah, it's home turf.
- 1:06:43Yes, yeah. And so, yeah, she's a she's a
- 1:06:47favorite. And she had as a weird Guild in
- 1:06:56exchange for the death of her father, she was able to choose
- 1:07:02any husband that she wanted from the Acer.
- 1:07:06But there was a cat. She had to choose her husband by
- 1:07:10their feet, not their faces. So a lineup of gods ensued and
- 1:07:18she chose the God that had the most beautiful feet among the
- 1:07:23gods, thinking that she got a prize and was going to end up
- 1:07:28marrying the beautiful God Baldur.
- 1:07:31But it wasn't Baldur's feet that she chose, it was the the sea
- 1:07:37God Nyord. So she she married Nyord, but
- 1:07:43they were not particularly happy because she liked the winter and
- 1:07:47she liked the mountains and Nyord like the sea and the sound
- 1:07:52of the wind and the waves. So they I think they ended up
- 1:07:56parting ways or at least. Yeah.
- 1:08:00That's yeah, they end. I'd love to know how that's that
- 1:08:04ended. Maybe I'll have to write
- 1:08:06something about that. Yeah, I, I forget the specifics,
- 1:08:09but they, they lasted up, you know, they lasted so long, you
- 1:08:12know, like it was, it was a. Season No, just can't do it.
- 1:08:14You can't do it. They had to go back like they
- 1:08:17have to like, go back and forth, like, let's like, let's live by
- 1:08:20the sea or then let's live in the mountains.
- 1:08:22And it was like, look, man, we can't.
- 1:08:23I can't do this. These long distance
- 1:08:26relationships man, just it's not happening.
- 1:08:30Yeah, and, and, and another moral of the story, kids, is
- 1:08:33that if you want beautiful feet, the beach is where it's at.
- 1:08:39I love that. Yes, yeah.
- 1:08:41The sandal they'll exfoliate. And give me those.
- 1:08:44It's all that exfoliating sand. Yeah, that'll.
- 1:08:47That'll make for beautiful feet. Yeah.
- 1:08:49Awesome. Suna.
- 1:08:57We had Mani a few slides back who was the depiction of the
- 1:09:01moon. And now we have Suna, the
- 1:09:03depiction of the sun. And I actually she's she's based
- 1:09:12on Marilyn Monroe because there's something about Marilyn
- 1:09:16Monroe's very brilliant that it's like that is the, you know,
- 1:09:21that is the sun. You can.
- 1:09:24See that? Yeah.
- 1:09:25That's that's about as deep as that piece gets.
- 1:09:29I could see that now that you mention it, I can see the the
- 1:09:32waves, the curls, the way her blonde hair would, would just.
- 1:09:36And she was larger than life. Like the sun, Yeah.
- 1:09:42Wow, The Wanderer. This is both the the the
- 1:09:49graphite piece in the corner is the study I did for the larger
- 1:09:54painting The Wanderer, and it it again is a depiction of Odin
- 1:10:02after his ordeal on the tree. So in the way, way background is
- 1:10:07the tree of course, and in the in the piece itself you can see
- 1:10:11tatters of rope hanging from the tree.
- 1:10:14Now in the clouds are Odin's wolves, Jerry and Frecky.
- 1:10:20So the crowd. Themselves are, are wolves and
- 1:10:23we've got the the Ravens, Hugin and Munin.
- 1:10:27And many times I will depict the the night sky in Odin's cloak.
- 1:10:34So if, if you can see it close at all, there's Starlight in the
- 1:10:41Milky Way in, in Odin's cloak. And I, I actually used my
- 1:10:47husband as the model. So yes, portraiture at his best.
- 1:11:00This is this is actually the large painting is an acrylic
- 1:11:04piece and the study is graphite. I think things froze up and I
- 1:11:18depict Odin's cloak. You'll see Starlight in the
- 1:11:23cloak because sometimes I'll use it to the night sky.
- 1:11:29And the big painting itself is is an acrylic and the study was
- 1:11:37the study is graphite. Yeah, and he's still that, that
- 1:11:42that old man kind of cut and lean, you know, coming off of
- 1:11:45this tree. Like he knows something now.
- 1:11:48Very. He knows a lot of stuff now.
- 1:11:50Yeah, yeah, He's got this. He's got this kind of air about
- 1:11:53him. He's walking this, this, this
- 1:11:54strut almost in a way, this, this stride.
- 1:11:56Like, man, I've seen some things and some stuff, yeah.
- 1:12:00Yeah, he's definitely seen a few things.
- 1:12:06Awesome, I love the Odin pieces. Thank you all.
- 1:12:13Right and. Oh, the Weaver.
- 1:12:19Very colorful. The Weaver.
- 1:12:21Yeah, Thank you. It's sometimes this is how I'll
- 1:12:25see Frigga. And again, she's got this, the
- 1:12:29DIS staff out out in front of her and the Norns in the
- 1:12:34mountain, they are spinning and casting Nets out to the sea.
- 1:12:40And in in the illustration itself, there are forests in the
- 1:12:45in the sea coming from the weaving.
- 1:12:48There are different scenes that are are woven into this net that
- 1:12:53is cast into the waves. So yeah, it's a continuation of
- 1:12:58of the weaving theme that is in a lot of my work.
- 1:13:06Side note, I'm up until the last couple years I was a Weaver as
- 1:13:11well, and I find that weaving is a really good way to do save
- 1:13:18work and a really good outlet for things like sympathetic
- 1:13:25magic. Here's an example.
- 1:13:28In a dream I I had one of my small looms and I had it all
- 1:13:35laid out for tablet weaving. And tablet weaving is one of
- 1:13:38those wonderful ancient artifacts that we have historic
- 1:13:45samples of from the Viking era. Anyhow, obsession took up tablet
- 1:13:51weaving. I'm dreaming weaving and I have
- 1:13:55a lot of chase dreams because I have a rather traumatic past.
- 1:13:59But I found in the dream I could manipulate the warp and weft in
- 1:14:04the dream to change the scenario of what was happening in the
- 1:14:09dream. So I could direct it and direct
- 1:14:12myself to safety on different strands within my weaving.
- 1:14:16Either I could go this way or that way according to the
- 1:14:19different warps and wefts that were happening on my loom in the
- 1:14:24dream. So it's like such delicious
- 1:14:28cunnings that's that come from the these ancient skills that
- 1:14:36many of our forebears did use to travel with the mind.
- 1:14:41So cool, cool stuff. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:14:46It has to be so empowering too. I feel it is.
- 1:14:50When When you find the tools to protect yourself, even in a
- 1:14:54dream, that's powerful stuff for an art.
- 1:15:00Yeah, yeah. I mean, like I say, you, you
- 1:15:02know, whether you do it again or whether you do it now or not, it
- 1:15:05you've kind of found the outlet through your art to, to depict
- 1:15:09it and bring it to life, You know, and, and I love the
- 1:15:13integration of the mountains and the sea and just that whole the
- 1:15:17landscape of where the lore, you know, the Norse lore comes from.
- 1:15:22It was mountainous. It was by it was, you know, near
- 1:15:25the, near the sea there, there there's a, a blend of, of these
- 1:15:29landscapes and it's, it's, it's, it's, it's integrated
- 1:15:33beautifully in this, in this piece.
- 1:15:36I feel really nicely done. Thank you so much.
- 1:15:42Oh wow. This is one of my all time
- 1:15:45favorite pieces I go. Oh, I mean, I just go oh wow,
- 1:15:49wow. Yeah, this this is both the same
- 1:15:54piece, but the larger image is just a detail of the Wild Hunt.
- 1:16:03Odin is often depicted as the Lord of the Wild Hunt and at
- 1:16:10Yule, if you are caught out unaware on this longest, darkest
- 1:16:16night of the year, Odin and his wild host is out there going to
- 1:16:23collect those who are, who are lost and wandering.
- 1:16:27And so I have got in the background a band of warriors,
- 1:16:32ghostly warriors kind of foraging through the snow and
- 1:16:38the mist behind Odin on Slapner. Now I I don't have a Slapner
- 1:16:44depicted as an 8 legged horse because I'm I was going more for
- 1:16:52what could actually happen in a snowy field, what you could
- 1:16:58actually see and a fun note about my model for Odin.
- 1:17:08Some of your older people in your audience will know of a
- 1:17:13skeptic called the Amazing Randy.
- 1:17:18And now I can't remember his name.
- 1:17:21Shoot the Amazing Randy. At any rate, all anyone has to
- 1:17:26do is is Google the Amazing Randy.
- 1:17:28And he, he was a magician and a skeptic and he had $1,000,000
- 1:17:35challenge that he was, he was really good for debunking fake
- 1:17:40shit. So for any of your listeners,
- 1:17:44look up the Amazing Randy. He was my model for this
- 1:17:49particular painting. In fact, I had, I had emailed
- 1:17:54him to ask his permission to use his image and I I sold him the
- 1:17:59very first print of I sent him the very first print that I made
- 1:18:05off of this particular painting. So it was.
- 1:18:08James, Randy. Yes, yes, James, Randy, the
- 1:18:12amazing Randy, he was brilliant. He passed away a couple years
- 1:18:17back and yeah, he, he just was an amazing, amazing, brilliant
- 1:18:24man. So, Randall James Hamilton's
- 1:18:28whinge. Yeah, he's got the white beard,
- 1:18:31very Odinic kind of look to him. Yeah, so I, I thought it was
- 1:18:35really kind of cool that I had an atheist skeptic depicting the
- 1:18:41Odin, and I'm sure he got a kick out of that too.
- 1:18:44Yeah. I think that atheist, you know,
- 1:18:49I really like this piece, though Saga.
- 1:18:51I love the the, the the frosty kind of abysmal, you know, feel
- 1:18:58that, that, that this piece has the, the, the shading, the
- 1:19:01color, you know, it, it's not very vibrant.
- 1:19:03It's, it's, it's just again, it's a bit more abysmal and dark
- 1:19:06as the wild hunt is, you know, and how we would depict or, or
- 1:19:12or maybe imagine such an event to be.
- 1:19:14There's a few a few things, you know, again, Odin in his blue
- 1:19:18cloak and all that, a few red, but just otherwise just a very,
- 1:19:22you know. Stark Yeah.
- 1:19:24Yeah. Yeah, it's, it's a it's a
- 1:19:27favorite. It's one of those pieces where I
- 1:19:29worked on it and I could feel the breath of the horses.
- 1:19:33I could feel the snow, I could feel the mist.
- 1:19:36It was just a totally. Immersive.
- 1:19:38The The roar of the storm. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:41Yeah, it was very alive for me. I can tell it comes through.
- 1:19:46It really does. Here he is.
- 1:19:51Thor, Thor and the Midgard Serpent and and.
- 1:19:59He's he's red bearded. He's red bearded in this.
- 1:20:02Yes, he is red bearded like he is in the lore, not in Marvel
- 1:20:07fame. Chris Hemsworth is is not the
- 1:20:11the the lore, the Thor of lore. He is not the Thor of lore.
- 1:20:16He is. He is the Marvel Thor.
- 1:20:23Oh my very favorite actor that did Thor was in the movie
- 1:20:31Adventures with in Babysitting. Have you ever seen Adventures in
- 1:20:35Babysitting? It doesn't ring a bell.
- 1:20:40OK, it's an 80s movie anyhow. Men in Black.
- 1:20:48Oh yeah. OK, the guy that played Edgar.
- 1:20:52Yep, I know what you're talking about.
- 1:20:55He did a depiction of Thor that was absolutely fantastic.
- 1:21:01So if you get a chance, look up Adventures in Babysitting and
- 1:21:06and the hymn is Thor. It's really, really good.
- 1:21:10It's too cool. But yeah, Thor is the God of
- 1:21:13Thunder. He is the son of Odin and the
- 1:21:19earth, the goddess Yord. He is.
- 1:21:25He wields the mighty hammer Mullner.
- 1:21:28He wears iron gloves so he can actually wield Mullner and he is
- 1:21:36the defender of the gods. He is the the God of the common
- 1:21:40man. So throughout ancient Nordic
- 1:21:44Europe, Thor was usually the go to over Odin because he was more
- 1:21:50accessible than than Odin who could be more formidable.
- 1:21:56His hammer was often used in fertility rites to fertilize a
- 1:22:01bride, to fertilize a field. The Thunder was said to
- 1:22:06fertilize the fields, and a few slides back we saw his
- 1:22:10counterpart, the gentle Sith who represents the grain in the
- 1:22:15field ripening from the fertile, fertile storms.
- 1:22:20So yeah, he's, he's he's kind of like in the image on the left
- 1:22:27where he's got this, you know, Thunderbolt striking behind him
- 1:22:32and, you know, his hair is like all kind of wild and crazy.
- 1:22:35You know. That, that bit of like of a
- 1:22:37dynamic, yeah, like the, like a berserker frenzy.
- 1:22:41You know, I, I've always, I've always thought of Thor as the,
- 1:22:44you know, action first, think later, you know, type of guy.
- 1:22:50He's not, he's not, he's not tactical really.
- 1:22:52He's just when you need to get something done.
- 1:22:56Strategy. Nah, yeah.
- 1:22:58Brute force. Oh yeah.
- 1:23:00Yeah, yeah. The strongest of the gods, the
- 1:23:02champion of the gods, you know, the, the the Thunderer, Like he,
- 1:23:05he bears all of these cannings. These these these you know for a
- 1:23:09reason. Yeah.
- 1:23:12Yeah, I love it. And I remember now when you were
- 1:23:16talking about I, I had to look it up the, you know, adventures
- 1:23:19in Babysitting where he's, you know, blue, blue, blue tank top,
- 1:23:24a Scandinavian blind looking like a plumber kind of heel.
- 1:23:26But yeah, I know you're talking about now.
- 1:23:28Have a look at this. Yeah, bug in an Eggar suit.
- 1:23:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think one of my favorite
- 1:23:36depictions in in pop culture recently is in the God of War
- 1:23:47video game. You know, and I don't play the
- 1:23:49video game, but the way that that Thor is depicted in, in God
- 1:23:57of War, the newest God of War, God of War Ragnarok and all
- 1:24:01that, you know who Ryan Hurst is.
- 1:24:05No. So he, if you, if you like Sons
- 1:24:09of Anarchy, he was, he was Opie and Sons of Anarchy.
- 1:24:12He he was in a, a show, I think outlanders or, or or something
- 1:24:17like that. Anyway, he's the he's the voice
- 1:24:21of the digital character in the video game, but in the video
- 1:24:25game, like Thor is depicted. Yeah, Thor, Thor, if you just
- 1:24:29Google like Thor, God of War, he he looks like power lifter.
- 1:24:33He's got a big beer belly. He's massive, red haired,
- 1:24:37scruffy looking. And it's like that's the Thor
- 1:24:41that I think of when I think like of of the the the Norse
- 1:24:45myths. Not, not a not a, you know, 7%
- 1:24:49body fat 6 pack. Abs.
- 1:24:52You know, blonde beach boy kind of guy.
- 1:24:57Yeah, yes, you know, somewhat more substantial, more
- 1:25:01realistic. Yeah, he's got to be able to
- 1:25:03carry all of that weight, you know.
- 1:25:07Yep, yeah. But oh wow, I like this one here
- 1:25:13tear. Tear tear Tear is another
- 1:25:18favorite I'll tear is tear is complicated.
- 1:25:28He is in in my innings the God of self sacrifice.
- 1:25:35He he was the only person or only one of the gods that could
- 1:25:41handle the wolf Fenris. So he raised this being from a
- 1:25:47pup, so he nurtured, he cared for, he fed the beast.
- 1:25:52He cared for and loved this. This being Fenris, who is one of
- 1:25:59Loki's monstrous children. And the beast.
- 1:26:02Fenris grew too big, too fast on tears.
- 1:26:07Love that he became dangerous and in the lore because he was a
- 1:26:15danger and prophesied to be one of Odin's biggest shoot words
- 1:26:28gone enemies. Yeah, he's Odin's demise.
- 1:26:32I mean, I mean. Yeah, Odin meets his demise in
- 1:26:35the in the mouth of the wolf Fenris.
- 1:26:38So they want to keep this from happening.
- 1:26:42So they go to the dwarves to bind the wolf.
- 1:26:47And of course, they make it a challenge.
- 1:26:49And it's like, bitch, you can't break this one.
- 1:26:52So they bind Fenris with this sturdy chain that the dwarves
- 1:26:57have made, and he goes and it's gone.
- 1:27:01The chain breaks into millions and millions of pieces.
- 1:27:05Like it's nothing. So they go back to the dwarves.
- 1:27:08We need a stronger chain. This this wolf is out of hand.
- 1:27:12So they get a stronger chain. It's like, bitch can't break
- 1:27:15this one. And again, Fenris breaks the
- 1:27:21this heavy chain that they had laid upon him.
- 1:27:24So they go back to the dwarves the third time and say, look, we
- 1:27:29need something that doesn't look too dangerous that but for real
- 1:27:36for reels, we need. So they, the dwarves,
- 1:27:40constructed this delicate ribbon called Gleep Near and it was
- 1:27:44made from the breath of a cat or the footfall of a cat.
- 1:27:48A beautiful woman and a lot of other magical, magical,
- 1:27:54insubstantial things went into this ribbon Gleep Near.
- 1:28:00And so they present this to the wolf.
- 1:28:04And it's like, wait a minute. Yeah, it's.
- 1:28:06Kind of right, they gone. Yeah, very suspicious, guys.
- 1:28:12It's like this little thing. No, man, I I suspect magic.
- 1:28:16So Fenris would not let them put the ribbon upon him unless
- 1:28:22someone was willing to sacrifice their own well-being in exchange
- 1:28:29for this challenge. So his own foster father, for
- 1:28:37lack of a better word, Tear offered his right hand to the
- 1:28:42beast, the hand that fed him. And as he found he could not
- 1:28:50escape from the ribbons, Tear lost his hand to the beast in a
- 1:28:57betrayal that probably rended the heart of both Fenris and
- 1:29:04Tear is he put a lot of love into this beast and feeding him
- 1:29:08and nurturing him and making him grow as big as he did.
- 1:29:15He was loved, he was cared for. And it's like to me Tears also
- 1:29:20the God of of this kind of grief for the greater group of the
- 1:29:26gods and all the world's he had to bind his own foster child and
- 1:29:36that that had to that had to rend his own heart and being so
- 1:29:42tear. Yeah, man, the agony if you
- 1:29:46think about. Agony.
- 1:29:47Yeah. It's like you can't help but you
- 1:29:50know, when you go deeper into the lore and realize what what
- 1:29:55did they actually go through? What was the madness of Odin
- 1:29:59like? What was the betrayal of Fenris
- 1:30:01like? What was it like to parent this
- 1:30:04beast and know that you have to imprison them so.
- 1:30:12I can see it in his face. I think again, art being
- 1:30:16subjective, you know if if this was intended or not.
- 1:30:20But in tears face, there's this grief, there's this sadness,
- 1:30:24there's this despondent emotion shown in his expression.
- 1:30:30Just I can't believe I have to do this, you know, not his, not
- 1:30:34his pain, not the pain of losing his hand, but the pain of the
- 1:30:38Eid. Of betrayal.
- 1:30:40Yeah. The hand is a small price and
- 1:30:44you know, kind of makes me wonder if if that's where the,
- 1:30:46the saying biting the hand that feeds you comes from.
- 1:30:52Oh yeah. Wow, yeah, I could see that
- 1:30:56great, great depiction of the emotional.
- 1:30:59Thank you. Yeah.
- 1:31:00Yeah, yeah, it's, it's palpable. Yeah, I have to step away just
- 1:31:05for a second and grab my charger.
- 1:31:07So up. Yeah, sure, all.
- 1:31:10Right. Yeah, tears, tears, the agony, I
- 1:31:14mean, just all of that. Yeah.
- 1:31:17And that I think that actually does complete this slide of the
- 1:31:20Norse lore. Awesome.
- 1:31:24Thing So yeah, that's the that's the last slide on the on the
- 1:31:27Norse lore, I think. There's only like 5 slides on
- 1:31:32the other end because it was a miscellaneous.
- 1:31:35Yeah, yeah. The other one we'll go into real
- 1:31:38quick here if you don't mind. No, not at all.
- 1:31:41But. Just as a recap, I got to say
- 1:31:44like, what a, what a journey, you know, for me at least,
- 1:31:48having only seen these for the first time.
- 1:31:50And for anybody that's, you know, listening or watching that
- 1:31:53has seen saga's work before that it's, you know, a treat maybe
- 1:31:59for you to, to see and to hear more of the, the details of, of
- 1:32:03what went into it all. I just have to say personally
- 1:32:06speaking from the perspective of somebody seeing this artwork for
- 1:32:13the first time, but also getting the chance to kind of go into a
- 1:32:16deep dive analysis of each piece.
- 1:32:18What a treat. I love, I love what you've done.
- 1:32:22I, I, I think they're beautiful representations, you know,
- 1:32:26again, art being subjective, you know, some people I'm, I'm sure
- 1:32:29are going to have critiques or whatever when they see it, but
- 1:32:32who cares? I mean, I, I loved it.
- 1:32:34It was great. I loved some of the, the even
- 1:32:37down to like the background of certain things, you know, like
- 1:32:41what was depicted in the background or in the foreground
- 1:32:45even, or how I was able to like perceive or, or interpret the
- 1:32:49art. It took me for a journey that I
- 1:32:52wasn't expecting and I enjoyed it.
- 1:32:54I loved it and awesome. I'm impressed.
- 1:32:58So thank you so much for for wanting to share.
- 1:33:02I this is how I keep the lore alive when folklore and
- 1:33:11storytelling has always, always been a part of my makeup.
- 1:33:17I grew up in the 60s and 70s and so I saw fantastic TVTV was my
- 1:33:25babysitter and I saw things like Bewitched when it was still
- 1:33:31black and white. I saw A Dream of Jeannie when it
- 1:33:35first came out. I saw Dark Shadows when it still
- 1:33:39came out. And these stories were so
- 1:33:42enthralling to me. And you know, the stories that I
- 1:33:46was read as a child. I wanted to illustrate all of
- 1:33:49this stuff, and then I discovered the runes and the
- 1:33:54Norse lore that went with all of these wonderful staves, and I
- 1:34:01have to illustrate it. I, you know, it's one of those
- 1:34:04drives I have to keep the lore alive.
- 1:34:09And the best way I can do it is by my own painting of these
- 1:34:14pictures, my own feeling of the journey, like here's, here's an
- 1:34:20obscure goddess. Here we go.
- 1:34:23This is the goddess Lynn. That again, these, these are
- 1:34:33things that I have to live it. I have to feel it and it's me.
- 1:34:39It's just one of those enthralling things that then
- 1:34:42informs more deeds from a word to a word, from an image to an
- 1:34:48image, from a story to a story. I'm led to the next one and it
- 1:34:54becomes expansive. And the runic journeys that go
- 1:34:59with it. I can illustrate the journeys as
- 1:35:02they're happening. I have, I have.
- 1:35:06I have to show you my latest. Piece.
- 1:35:09Yes, you do. I agree.
- 1:35:13OK, we should see it. I just finished this.
- 1:35:20There we go. I will.
- 1:35:26I will send you a slide of this. This is the Norns.
- 1:35:33I love it. I just had to move move room
- 1:35:35myself from screen so everybody could see a better.
- 1:35:38That's OK. That's OK.
- 1:35:39This, this picture is actually the very last illustration in
- 1:35:45the lore book that should be published by Yule, and it's a
- 1:35:51picture of the Nords rising from the water and the wells.
- 1:35:57The three wells are beneath them and from both the Northern
- 1:36:01Lights I'm going to stick the thingy up again in there we go
- 1:36:08The the Norns are rising from the wells and both Northern
- 1:36:14Lights and the sea are the threads that they are spinning
- 1:36:19and that they're weaving and then they're cutting.
- 1:36:22So we've got or the Verdandian skulls spinning and weaving and
- 1:36:27cutting the threads, and is the last storm is cutting the
- 1:36:31threads of life. A new dawn happens after
- 1:36:40Ragnarok and the rainbow leads you to Valhalla into Asgard.
- 1:36:52Wow, you know, and that's. My latest piece.
- 1:36:57That is such a, you know, 'cause what do we have when we, when we
- 1:37:00talk about telling stories, right?
- 1:37:03We, we have, we have this scenario where a person is or
- 1:37:09rating in front of an audience or in front of, you know,
- 1:37:13whatever the audience might be, whether it's around a hearth
- 1:37:15fire or whether it's in front of an arena or whatever it is,
- 1:37:18right, Or ritual, right? You have a person or rating and
- 1:37:22telling a story. It invokes images in our mind's
- 1:37:28eye as the audience receiving is right.
- 1:37:30We're picturing this thing happening in our mind's eye.
- 1:37:34We're coming up with our own individual perspectives or
- 1:37:38whatever. And, and, and here we have, you
- 1:37:41know, the, the, the orators or, or, or the artist's vision being
- 1:37:47brought to life before us to see what they're seeing.
- 1:37:50And, and we're experiencing a bit of their meaning, your
- 1:37:54perspective and drawing to our own conclusions or, or, or, or
- 1:38:00again, art being as subjective as it is, receiving some of our
- 1:38:05own imagery, right and coming up with our own things about it.
- 1:38:09And how enriching and how rewarding is that to, to, to put
- 1:38:12a, a face to the name, you know, to think about the story of Thor
- 1:38:17fighting Yorman Gander, right, or whatever.
- 1:38:19Now we have a picture to go with it and it's sure it's one
- 1:38:22artist's rendition of it or version of it, but yet it's.
- 1:38:25And it's gonna be money. Yeah.
- 1:38:28Yeah, like a lot of a lot of my my work doesn't depict the rah
- 1:38:34rah Viking kind of aspect of things.
- 1:38:37It's more of the subconscious, the more fluid interpretation of
- 1:38:46how I see the gods and goddesses and aspects of nature.
- 1:38:51Yes, now you know, and I, I have to say, like you definitely have
- 1:38:54a theme, you know, you definitely have a, your art is
- 1:39:00unique. Like I think if anybody sees a
- 1:39:02piece and, and, and sees other pieces, that's like that's a
- 1:39:05saga piece, right? My my my style is is pretty
- 1:39:09consistent. Exactly.
- 1:39:13Yeah, I, I, I can from, from the 24, you know, slides that we saw
- 1:39:17in the various images, it's like, I definitely know from
- 1:39:20that that I'm looking at the same artist and and that's
- 1:39:26great. You know, I love the
- 1:39:28consistency, how you depict the gods, what what the gods and,
- 1:39:34and the lore and, and how you connect with it, how it speaks
- 1:39:37to you and how you're able to to portray that for all of us.
- 1:39:41I think it's really nicely done. And and yeah, thank you so much.
- 1:39:46It's a treat. It's again.
- 1:39:48You're very welcome. Do you want to touch on this?
- 1:39:53There's a there's AI. Think you said it's called a
- 1:39:55GNOME series. Oh yes, my Gnome series.
- 1:40:00Do you want to go on that real? Quick, Sure, sure.
- 1:40:02It's it's a real quickie I have. I have just a few of the pieces
- 1:40:10from the Gnome series on this slide.
- 1:40:13And the Gnome series is is actually based on on mine and my
- 1:40:24husband's life in our sustainability experiment.
- 1:40:30We do things very, very old fashioned here and at one time
- 1:40:35we were historic reenactors. So a lot of my GNOME series is
- 1:40:41informed by late late 19th century technology and
- 1:40:50especially fur trade type of of stuff.
- 1:40:53So these are three of of my gnome depictions.
- 1:41:00We've got winter camp, we've got the hearth and we have the
- 1:41:06greeting. And I I actually have an
- 1:41:11illustration project lined up once I finished the Norse lore
- 1:41:16book for one of my cousins who's a a published poet writing a
- 1:41:23story about her gnomes from a Dutch point of view, because
- 1:41:29half of my family is from the Netherlands.
- 1:41:32So I'll be illustrating a book depicting a story about the
- 1:41:39gnomes from an A perspective from the Netherlands.
- 1:41:49Any you know. So that's that's the Gnome
- 1:41:52series. Yeah, the gnomes, I mean like
- 1:41:54gnomes as as a word, like there's there's different names
- 1:41:58for them in different cultures. Like there's the Nisa, there's
- 1:42:02the Tomte, like very like Norwegian, I think is is a very.
- 1:42:08And Tomte and the floor. Yeah.
- 1:42:12And I know in the Netherlands they're called kabuters.
- 1:42:17Yeah, yeah, there's, there's so much folklore in, in, in
- 1:42:20Northern Europe that surrounds these, these little people or
- 1:42:23these little unseen spirits. And, and for the, for the, for
- 1:42:26the listeners, yes, the housewives, right.
- 1:42:29The the the spirits of the home, they they kind of are a
- 1:42:33representation of the inhabitants of the hearth and
- 1:42:37home. Yeah.
- 1:42:38In in in a lot of folklore and. In my my versions, they depict a
- 1:42:44lot of our life. And these are some illustrations
- 1:42:48from one of Kurt's books. Kurt Hoogstrat is one of my best
- 1:42:53friends and he wrote he, he's written four books now, but it's
- 1:42:59his last two. I had the great privilege of
- 1:43:03being able to do the illustrations and layouts for
- 1:43:06his books. So this is these are just some
- 1:43:08of the the pen and ink pieces that I did for for a couple of
- 1:43:13his books. Do you remember the name of the
- 1:43:16books that these illustrations would be seen in?
- 1:43:20Yeah, the one is Let There Be Light and it is available
- 1:43:25through Amazon by Kurt Hoogstrat.
- 1:43:27And the other one is, hang on a SEC, I'm just going to grab it
- 1:43:32off the bookshelf. Yeah.
- 1:43:41OK, here we are. It is Esoteric Musings, the
- 1:43:47workings of a Druid and Vitki, and this is available through
- 1:43:53Amazon. All of all of Kurt's works.
- 1:43:57What? I was saying esoteric works of a
- 1:44:00of a druid and Vicki. I have Vicki Musings by Kurt
- 1:44:03Hoogstrat 1. Of his and that is part of this
- 1:44:07book Vitsky musings and Druid musings.
- 1:44:12He he combined into one book and I I was so thrilled to be able
- 1:44:18to do the illustrations for this book.
- 1:44:20And here's one you might recognize in black and white if
- 1:44:26I can get my page straight. There we go, the Wild Hunt in
- 1:44:30black and white. Tada, yes, there it is.
- 1:44:36Yep, and remove the screen sharing just so the way people
- 1:44:40could see it. That's fine.
- 1:44:42We'll, we'll we'll post links for that too 'cause Kurt is is
- 1:44:46a. Kurt's a good guy.
- 1:44:48Yeah, he he's so cool, man. I love it.
- 1:44:51He really wins. Alright, so yeah.
- 1:44:57And these these also featured in Kurt's book.
- 1:45:01These are these are some of my portrait works in graphite.
- 1:45:06And yeah, these are various portraits.
- 1:45:08One is based on old photos from the late 19th century.
- 1:45:14And the the one on the bottom in the center was actually a photo
- 1:45:21I had taken when in my photography days of a young girl
- 1:45:27keeping her puppy warm. So it was just kind of a fun
- 1:45:31piece and I could work on, I call it shelter from the storm
- 1:45:37because it was really, really windy and her Chihuahua pup was
- 1:45:40just freezing. So she's got them all wrapped up
- 1:45:42in a blankie. So.
- 1:45:45But yeah, these are pieces that also ended up in Kurt's book.
- 1:45:50Very nice. Thank you.
- 1:45:53And these are from a book I'm working on.
- 1:46:00Yes, yes. This is a memoir from some of my
- 1:46:06experiences in the last 60 years.
- 1:46:10And so these are from some of my dreams and some of the things I
- 1:46:17imagined as a little girl. And the book will be called
- 1:46:21Skeletons in the Closet. So it'll be kind of a
- 1:46:24combination of of humor and anecdotes and tragedies and a
- 1:46:30life well lived. Wow, wow.
- 1:46:35So, visions from your mind's eye.
- 1:46:38Yes, yeah. Wow, see this type of stuff
- 1:46:43really fascinates me. When a person who has these
- 1:46:47types of subconscious visions and experiences have, you know,
- 1:46:52when, when they have the, the capacity to remember enough of
- 1:46:57it to put it to paper or acrylic or whatever the, the substance
- 1:47:02might be right to, to materialize these visions.
- 1:47:04Like do do do people realize like for the like, again, if
- 1:47:08you're listening to this and, and you've made it this far in
- 1:47:11the podcast and you haven't become a patron on Patreon to
- 1:47:14watch this, what you're seeing here is stuff that nobody else
- 1:47:17has ever portrayed. Yeah, nobody's seen this yet.
- 1:47:21Nobody's seen this yet. This is This is exclusive,
- 1:47:26right? This is, this is a treat.
- 1:47:28And that, and that's putting it mildly.
- 1:47:30But I mean, like, you know, there's, there's plenty of
- 1:47:33artists out there that have kind of done a similar thing before
- 1:47:36where, you know, they, they, they paint or they draw or they
- 1:47:38depict something that they've had in terms of a vision.
- 1:47:41But this is your vision or these are your visions.
- 1:47:45These are your depictions. And we're seeing this now, you
- 1:47:48know, in this format and in this way for the first time, right?
- 1:47:55This isn't published. Yeah.
- 1:47:57This particular slide, none of these pieces have been
- 1:48:00published. What an honor.
- 1:48:02Oh my goodness. Oh, thank you.
- 1:48:04Wow. Thank you.
- 1:48:09Some color pieces here. This is this is a sneak peek
- 1:48:14from the lore book. These these two these have never
- 1:48:18been been seen in public. So this these are a sneak peek
- 1:48:22for the the books that should be coming out at Yule Wow.
- 1:48:26And these are different depictions from the Voluspa.
- 1:48:34Which is a rich poem. I mean, it's a it's one.
- 1:48:37Of the one of my favorites. Of, of what we would consider a
- 1:48:41primary source of the Codex Regis, you know, and to have
- 1:48:47imagery to put to yeah, wow, what a treat Saga.
- 1:48:54I, I, I can't I and that's the end of that one.
- 1:48:56That's, that's, that's all we got.
- 1:48:59And that's what we needed to get.
- 1:49:00That was goodness gracious sakes a lot.
- 1:49:03Boy, I can't even, I can't even put into words the excitement
- 1:49:07of, of being given this privilege and this opportunity
- 1:49:11to, to sit here with you and, and go through this.
- 1:49:14And then for the viewers, I mean, listen guys, for those of
- 1:49:18you on Patreon that are watching this, consider yourselves
- 1:49:23blessed and honored as well as I am to sit here and, and, and see
- 1:49:28everything that you've seen. And for the listeners that are
- 1:49:32are hearing this, do yourselves a favor.
- 1:49:36I mean, it ain't but a dollar. And you know, if you don't, if
- 1:49:40you don't renew it, I don't care.
- 1:49:41Just come and and pledge the dollar to be able to see all of
- 1:49:46this stuff in full that we've gone now, you know, or that
- 1:49:49we've gone over now for for over an hour and a half, almost
- 1:49:52almost an hour and 45 minutes. This is first of all, Saga, a
- 1:49:56tremendous amount of time that you've dedicated for us to be
- 1:50:01able to go through this. Thank you so very much for for
- 1:50:04doing this. You're very welcome.
- 1:50:06This is time well spent, I feel. At least, you know, for me as,
- 1:50:11as, as the host here, I, I feel infinitely blessed to, to, to
- 1:50:15have shared this time with you today.
- 1:50:17So thank you so very much for the listeners, for the viewers.
- 1:50:20Guys, I can't stress enough, the gift that we've all been given
- 1:50:26here and, and, and saga. I, I, I, I want to say too, I
- 1:50:31feel like this is some, this is a gift that can keep on giving
- 1:50:34in, in, in terms of inspiration, you know, do you feel, do you
- 1:50:38feel like doing stuff like this can inspire others to see
- 1:50:47something similar within themselves that maybe can awaken
- 1:50:50in themselves? Yeah, I really hope so.
- 1:50:53I, I have had the great privilege to see some of my
- 1:50:59peers that are, they're young, younger than myself and up and
- 1:51:03coming in on this path, who are creating and they are telling
- 1:51:10the stories their way. And I, I just am thrilled to see
- 1:51:17all the different ways that Odin is depicted, all the different
- 1:51:22ways that Thor is depicted, all the different ways that the
- 1:51:27young people coming up are expressing the devotion, what
- 1:51:33they like about particular deities, what they like about
- 1:51:36particular practices. And they're illustrating it,
- 1:51:40they're writing it, they're acting it out.
- 1:51:44And I love to see all of the diverse ways that people are
- 1:51:51imagining the gods into being. It's like we create them in our
- 1:51:57image. Really kind of a deep dive
- 1:52:00there. But it's like this, this
- 1:52:03embodiment is how they create in a tactile way through our hands,
- 1:52:10through our eyes, through our hearts.
- 1:52:13Our writings are divine, our art is divine, our music is divine.
- 1:52:18All of this grand storytelling that we humans get up to, this
- 1:52:23is the work of gods, and keeping the stories alive is important
- 1:52:30to inspire more stories, more lore, today's lore, contemporary
- 1:52:39war. Yes, we should be writing sagas,
- 1:52:44right We we live in saga times. Saga times, yes.
- 1:52:49You know, and Yep, what opportunities are there for
- 1:52:54people to gather around a hearth fire or a campfire or a communal
- 1:52:58gathering and tell a story? You know, if you don't have a
- 1:53:03story to tell, then make a story, create a story, live
- 1:53:06something, do something. And then, yeah.
- 1:53:10Like, like a lot of the people that I mentor, they they want to
- 1:53:15know how Odin and Frigg fell in love.
- 1:53:19I said pray about it, tell their story.
- 1:53:22Imagine it into being. We are the Lord keepers.
- 1:53:27And it's like there's only a small fraction of what was oral
- 1:53:33traditions that ever made it into writing.
- 1:53:35Let's imagine the rest into being.
- 1:53:39Let's fill in the let's fill in the gaps.
- 1:53:41We have that power. Yeah.
- 1:53:45Yeah, we do. We do.
- 1:53:46And there there's like there's another aspect to that that I
- 1:53:50feel is, is worth mentioning in that the the stories of our
- 1:53:54time, the things that the people we know that are experiencing,
- 1:53:59right are are are the people that are experiencing these
- 1:54:02profound moments, these these sort of revelatory musings,
- 1:54:09right? Their their own UPG.
- 1:54:12OK, we'll just say that. Are they are, are they locking
- 1:54:19it down and keeping it away from people or are they sharing it
- 1:54:22with the right people and turning it into a saga?
- 1:54:26And I have an example for like listeners and viewers that I,
- 1:54:29you know, I, I can't say that it'll ever be public at this
- 1:54:35point. But your situation here saga,
- 1:54:38like with with what you've shown us today through your art is it
- 1:54:43has inspired me to just say this much, right?
- 1:54:44I have a, a, a personal experience that I am, you know,
- 1:54:50I am authoring or I am writing a saga myself through, from a
- 1:54:54personal experience that I I had.
- 1:54:57And I've told it in a very raw, I I've told it in a very raw
- 1:55:00form around 1 campfire. And there's been a lot of gaps
- 1:55:03that through the story I had to be like, yeah, I need to fill
- 1:55:05this thing that or the other. But I have a goal set by a
- 1:55:10certain point in time this year that it'll be finished and that
- 1:55:14I will be able to tell it around a fire and tell this saga, you
- 1:55:19know, And it's a personal experience.
- 1:55:21It's nothing that you'll ever hear about in, you know, lore or
- 1:55:24anything like that. But that's that's where sagas
- 1:55:28come from. They come from and experience a
- 1:55:30moment in time that was captured by somebody that had the
- 1:55:37ability, the, the, the, the, the cognitive presence and
- 1:55:40everything to retell it to, you know, turn the, the average or,
- 1:55:48or perhaps the above average thing into some sort of heroic
- 1:55:52feat or deify a person or even, you know what I mean?
- 1:55:56That's what a saga is. Yeah.
- 1:56:00That's what are. Things family saga of the Bull
- 1:56:06Suns. That's how it happens.
- 1:56:09Yes. Hail Day.
- 1:56:13And that's what's happening now. Like there are things that that
- 1:56:16happen. You know, people experience
- 1:56:19things. I know I'm not the only one.
- 1:56:20I know you're not the only one. There are people experiencing
- 1:56:24things that they can turn around and share with their respective
- 1:56:27communities through the art of storytelling.
- 1:56:31Yes. Immortalize the experience,
- 1:56:35right? And, and, and turn it into
- 1:56:37something that your people now have a story to tell.
- 1:56:41I heard the story once around this fire about the blah, blah,
- 1:56:45blah, whatever it was, right? And, and next thing you know, it
- 1:56:49becomes the story that gets told to the children and the children
- 1:56:52they're after and this and that. And then maybe it gets written
- 1:56:54down or whatever, but it, you know, it starts with the
- 1:56:57experience that that person had and then they immortalize it
- 1:57:02through storytelling and whether it's art or whether it's oration
- 1:57:06or whether it's music. There's so many ways to to
- 1:57:11immortalize our our tales and to really express what it is to be
- 1:57:17living in Saga times. You know, it's fun and you're
- 1:57:23doing it wonderfully. Saga, thank you so much.
- 1:57:24Thank. You, you're very welcome.
- 1:57:27This was this was awesome. Yeah, this was awesome.
- 1:57:32I mean not being biased or anything, but it really was for
- 1:57:34me. I I appreciate it and I hope it
- 1:57:36was as enjoyable for you as it was for me and hopefully.
- 1:57:38And when I get on kind of A roll, when I start telling the
- 1:57:43stories of the pieces, because for me it's still very much
- 1:57:47alive. Even the pieces I did 30 years
- 1:57:50ago are still as soon as I I live the story again, it's, it's
- 1:57:56alive for me. So that's a special gift too.
- 1:58:01So thank you. Yeah, no, I and yeah, 100%.
- 1:58:05And, and, you know, to, to wrap things up, like when you say
- 1:58:09the, the stories are still alive, I mean, when I think of a
- 1:58:14belief, you know, when I think of what it means to believe in
- 1:58:18something, what comes to mind for me is that to believe means
- 1:58:26to be alive. So if I'm gonna believe in
- 1:58:30something, I'm going to be alive in it.
- 1:58:33It's going to live through me. I'm not gonna just put it on as
- 1:58:37a facade or as a hat or as some sort of costume or whatever and
- 1:58:41make it this like thing. It, it, it, it's gonna show
- 1:58:43through my life. I'm gonna live it.
- 1:58:47And this is yet another example of being alive in what you
- 1:58:54believe. It's it's showing through your
- 1:58:56art. You, you, you, it, it stands up,
- 1:59:00right? It, it, it.
- 1:59:02The time is immeasurable when it comes to the depiction of these
- 1:59:06things because what was relevant and what was alive 30 years ago?
- 1:59:10Who cares? That's just time.
- 1:59:12What is, whatever that is it, it's still alive today.
- 1:59:15Why? Well, because of the life that
- 1:59:17it's been given, of the life that it's been carried, you
- 1:59:21know, the, the carrying that life through our deeds, you
- 1:59:25know. And so that's what I think of
- 1:59:27when I think of belief. It is to be alive in it.
- 1:59:31I like that a lot. That's really, yeah, that makes
- 1:59:35a lot of sense. And thank you so much for being
- 1:59:39alive in your art and keeping the lore alive through it.
- 1:59:47I think you've done a wonderful job and I hope others can
- 1:59:52appreciate that as well. And you know, for those folks
- 1:59:55that want to support an artist, that want to support a liver of
- 2:00:02the lore, as it were, there'll be links for for you to check
- 2:00:06out on ways to do that. You know, Saga has a rich
- 2:00:10background and history of of everything she's done over the
- 2:00:14last several decades. So be sure to check out those
- 2:00:17links and show your support in any way that you can.
- 2:00:23Cool beans and the coolest of beans.
- 2:00:26I gotta say, you know, like we're halfway through.
