Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Trent's Back, Weekend Recap with Super Bowl 60 set, Scott Dochterman talks College Football & Hawkeyes
Transcript
- 0:00Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:02Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:05back at it for the next 6 hours. Appreciate you starting that
- 0:09period of time here with Trent Condon and myself.
- 0:11Ken Doors, we will take you until 2:00.
- 0:13Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:16Just a couple of guests joining us here today.
- 0:18Scott Docman will be the first. He's of course rights for the
- 0:21Athletic. The Athletic turned 10 years old
- 0:23yesterday, wasn't sure it was going to survive when it first
- 0:27launched, but it didn't. It's grown and it's better than
- 0:29ever. So we'll do that and a couple of
- 0:31other topics with Doc coming up here at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:35And then at 1:00, starting off our second hour, we'll be joined
- 0:38by Bill Seals, Iowa State conversation.
- 0:40The men are off until they don't play until I'm with Thursday,
- 0:45Thursday, Colorado on Thursday 6:00 tip.
- 0:48I plays Wednesday and the Iowa State women they also play
- 0:51Wednesday. But we got a lot of topics with
- 0:53Bill Seals is he had an opportunity to talk to the new
- 0:57head football coach. Not new from December but we'll
- 1:00pick his brain on that. Coming up here at one O Clock
- 1:04and just bands are back and forth till 2O clock when we turn
- 1:08things over to off the bench with Lucas and Sean back from
- 1:12vacation all tanned, ready to roll.
- 1:14How are you? Doing well.
- 1:16It's quite a, quite a change getting back here on Friday
- 1:19night, but yeah. Now walk through the jet way
- 1:23when it hits you. It hits you the.
- 1:25Plane door opens and walking. It was like 10:30 or so.
- 1:30When we got to the vehicle, it had it warmed up, but it's still
- 1:33it was chilly getting there and quite a change as we walked back
- 1:36into this after being in Mexico for a week.
- 1:38But great time. Celebrated my buddy's 50th
- 1:41birthday, had fun there. And then the final two days,
- 1:44everybody departed. They came there a couple days
- 1:46early. So just tearing myself for the
- 1:48last couple of days, which is really nice.
- 1:49Yeah. Having a couple of days
- 1:51together, so good vacation recharge ready to go.
- 1:54And yeah, got to watch the Bears game.
- 1:58Did you see it live? Yes.
- 1:59Yeah, at the one of the bars there at the at the resort and
- 2:03very disappointed had to. Certainly had some ups and
- 2:06downs. I mean, unbelievable, right?
- 2:08The Caleb Williams play will live forever.
- 2:10Unfortunately, they couldn't seal the deal and finish the
- 2:13job. But that's that's not on the
- 2:15quarterback. That's on #2 Moore, who's quit
- 2:18running the road. That's how I saw it anyways.
- 2:21So we do have our Super Bowl all set.
- 2:22It's the Seahawks and the Patriots, that which was a
- 2:26massive, massive price before the season started to just name
- 2:29the finalists. But that's what we've got.
- 2:31Like it or not, we've got one game left and that's what it
- 2:34will be. Point spreads, 4 1/2.
- 2:36Right now, Seahawks are 4 1/2 point favorite over the
- 2:38Patriots. We'll see where that number
- 2:40goes. Obviously, a lot of basketball
- 2:42between now and then, including a massive game tonight in the
- 2:46big Oh yes, Arizona, BYU. Jeez, buckle up for that one.
- 2:49That should be outstanding television.
- 2:51But let's recap the games from yesterday before we move on and
- 2:55departeau and Hawkeye and Cyclone related topics which
- 2:58move the needle more than anything.
- 3:00But so does the NFL. And the viewing numbers got to
- 3:03be massive once we get these once they come out me either
- 3:06later today or at some point tomorrow, just because that most
- 3:09of the country could leave the house with with the weather that
- 3:12that had been falling upon them. But look, give the Patriots
- 3:17credit. They they did enough to win the
- 3:18football game. Jared Stidham, Sean Payton
- 3:22talked a good game or Sean Payton talked about Jared
- 3:24Stidham having a good game all week long.
- 3:27That didn't materialize, but it's on Sean Payton.
- 3:30I mean, you got to kick the field goal there with a backup
- 3:31quarterback. That wasn't Monday morning
- 3:34quarterbacking. That was screaming at the TV
- 3:36while it was happening. Denver did enough defensively.
- 3:40Patriots got a really good defense.
- 3:43We'll see where it goes. I don't have much hope for a a
- 3:46lot of intrigue in the Super Bowl, but the Patriots one went
- 3:49away from putting another Lombardi trophy in the already
- 3:52overflowing trophy. Case, Yeah.
- 3:53Not many people had this match up coming into the season with
- 3:56the Seahawks and the Patriots. Was it 310 to 1?
- 3:59I think I saw. Did you?
- 4:00I think I saw 310 to 1. I had 151 Rams, Broncos.
- 4:05Oh yeah. That left the mark.
- 4:07Absolutely. Would have been one of the
- 4:09biggest odd scores I would have ever hit.
- 4:11But that's why I like to bet. That's how we bet.
- 4:13And I lose more than I went. I don't have any.
- 4:15Pictures. I'm done.
- 4:15I I know. I'm licking my wounds.
- 4:17So is this going to be anything that you're going to come back
- 4:20the other way and how to? I've got my counts are empty.
- 4:24I'm now waiting for for March Madness.
- 4:27OK, and then the Stanley cop. Oh yo-yo.
- 4:30But anyways, that's what betting's about, right?
- 4:33You have fun along the way. And hopefully, I mean, I'm, I'm
- 4:36not going to miss a mortgage payment or anything like that,
- 4:39but I I don't like betting on games.
- 4:41I love going for a big score and man, I thought I had a chance.
- 4:44But anyways, it's the patriots. It was the conditions.
- 4:48Stidham really looked like a backup quarterback who hadn't
- 4:51played in in three years, which he hadn't.
- 4:56And you can't blame the referees for anything.
- 4:58It was on Sean Payton, in my opinion, and Will Lutz.
- 5:01The the final field goal was tipped.
- 5:04It was tipped leaving, leaving his foot.
- 5:06That's off to the Patriots for making a play.
- 5:08They got the job done. They advance and they'll
- 5:10represent what you know, we thought when the playoffs
- 5:12started, kind of AAFC. The couple of things you
- 5:17mentioned, Stidham and he looked good early on, hit the deep shot
- 5:20and like, all right, maybe there's something here after the
- 5:23scripted plays, though, I'm sure the plays that they ran over, we
- 5:25talk about this a ton. You could see.
- 5:27And as you said, he looked like a backup quarterback.
- 5:29You know, I didn't think. And the reason that I like the
- 5:32Broncos, at least with the points is a step down from him
- 5:35to and from Nicks to him. I don't think was as substantial
- 5:38as a lot of people were making it out.
- 5:40And I was vindicated, I thought for the first quarter and a half
- 5:42and certainly before the fumble was feeling good about that part
- 5:46of it. But you know, the other
- 5:47component you mentioned the field goal and you yelling at
- 5:49your TV, take the points, take the points in that spot
- 5:53compounded with the weather situation.
- 5:55Because I was sitting there at one point in the third quarter.
- 5:58And I'm just saying to myself, myself, I thought it was
- 6:01supposed to be snowing and the flurries were starting a little
- 6:04bit. But like I thought this was
- 6:05going to be a big impact. Well, we saw what it turned into
- 6:07very quickly. Yes, very quickly it happened.
- 6:09Did you realized, was that kind of part of it that this was
- 6:13going to happen? And as the day went on, people
- 6:15were saying it's probably going to hit in a second-half,
- 6:17something like that, and it's going to be substantial because
- 6:19I guess I just didn't realize what was coming.
- 6:22But you also lived in Deborah, you know.
- 6:23And when it comes in, it comes in very quickly over the
- 6:25mountains, over the Front Range, whatever is they call it.
- 6:28And I can I can't imagine trying to navigate I-25, getting out of
- 6:32there and getting home wherever you lived during that.
- 6:34But yeah, and it happens. And and you saw it just as the
- 6:37deteriorating conditions as the as the game went on.
- 6:41Broncos need another receiver in the worst way.
- 6:43Courtland Sutton is not A1 receiver saying it all year
- 6:46long. Injuries caught up with him, but
- 6:48it's part of the game. Part of the game.
- 6:50Patriots better team yesterday. Franklin gets scratched before
- 6:53the game. Yeah, and then Brian Franklin's
- 6:55first again. Yeah, first series of the game.
- 6:59So they're down to no receivers for the most part.
- 7:01Yeah, when he got Little John out there playing as much as he
- 7:03was, OK, you're in trouble. Yeah, yeah, that's for sure.
- 7:06Couldn't run the ball against the Patriots either.
- 7:08And and. No.
- 7:09This is obviously leading more Denver because you are a Bronco
- 7:12fan, and there's obviously more Bronco fans certainly in this
- 7:14market than there are Patriots fans.
- 7:16I don't think there's any doubt about that.
- 7:17However, that New England defense, boy, they're good.
- 7:20They really are, and I give a ton of credit because Broncos
- 7:23got a pretty good offensive line and Stidham was running for his
- 7:26life a lot of time during that game.
- 7:28We'll see if that they can make an impact against the against
- 7:31the Seahawks, who got by the Rams in an unbelievably
- 7:35entertaining football game. It really was.
- 7:36I thought, I thought that saved the day yesterday just the how
- 7:40good that was The Rams doing what they did against what I
- 7:45thought was almost an impenetrable defense that the
- 7:48Seahawks bring to the field most weeks.
- 7:50But at the end of the day, was Sam Darnold playing mistake free
- 7:53football and can he do it again? He was outstanding and we have
- 7:58used a lot of airwaves, Me making fun of Sam Darnold.
- 8:01You saying that he's not as bad as you think.
- 8:04He was tremendous. He was.
- 8:06It wasn't just making the makeables and having Smith and
- 8:09Jigba. Who?
- 8:09So look, put that one hand in. Maybe his best catch was the one
- 8:14out of bounds in the end zone. Yeah, I think that was his best
- 8:17catch of the day. They threw the ball into the
- 8:18stands. He is so good and just the
- 8:24footwork that he has the ability, you know that they're
- 8:27keen on him, they're bringing extra people and it doesn't
- 8:30matter. He is just absolutely
- 8:31tremendous. Can Gonzales handle him in two
- 8:34weeks? No, Gonzales I thought was bad
- 8:35at times. My pet had the interception but
- 8:37yeah I don't disagree with him when maybe not his best day.
- 8:40I don't know how you can cover. Him, I really, I don't think he
- 8:42can. I don't think he can.
- 8:43Is it one of those where you just he's going to get his let's
- 8:46worry about slowing, slow down the run game, which wasn't great
- 8:49either. And I think the Patriots are
- 8:50going to be fine in that we're going to beat the other guys are
- 8:53not going to beat us, Smith and Jake, but he's going to get his
- 8:55you look the other direction. And kind of that's maybe the
- 8:58path to victory for New England is going that direction.
- 9:01But yeah, Arnold definitely was the story I thought in this one
- 9:04more. Special teams woes for the Rams.
- 9:06Been a bugaboo all season long. Got him again yesterday.
- 9:09And having to throw Kyron Williams back there.
- 9:11Just a fair catch. Just a catch.
- 9:13Yeah, because people are talking about the last one.
- 9:16You fumble at the end of the half just right and got it back.
- 9:20Got it back. Still, that how that changed the
- 9:22complexion too. Did you get a 12 yard return
- 9:25even on that one? What that could have meant at
- 9:26the end of the half Tremendous game and I was pissed off at
- 9:30the. End of the I was too absolutely
- 9:32the clock right but as. The rule of the law you just
- 9:37stop the clock and as you see the referees widen the arm up
- 9:40like. No, no, no, no, no.
- 9:42I know as you know what, I'm with you 100%.
- 9:46Bets are no bets. Just give us a chance, America.
- 9:49You see this play, this one final gasp for the for the Rams
- 9:55to make the catch, obviously, and go on or drop the ball and
- 9:58go home. But we never got that
- 10:00opportunity because the damn official made the right call.
- 10:04How dare he, right? He screwed those football fans
- 10:06out of one final play that we need to see.
- 10:09I was also explained it last night to the kids.
- 10:12There's only one more football game.
- 10:13Don't remind me. And as I I was very happy about
- 10:17it because both kids, both Ellen and Jack were very sad.
- 10:21There's only one really good. They're becoming great parenting
- 10:24trend. Yes, big, big football fans.
- 10:26And I absolutely love that that they were disappointed last
- 10:29night as it was coming to a close and they're going to bed
- 10:32that this is it until the Super Bowl and we have a Super Bowl
- 10:34party. Usually, you know, have some
- 10:35friends over. They don't really watch that
- 10:37game because they're playing with their friends.
- 10:38So that's one that they were sad about.
- 10:41And I'm like, all right, I think I think we finally got the hooks
- 10:43into them and they're big football fans now.
- 10:45That's outstanding. Hey, I had one question for you,
- 10:48kind of. I know how much you love both
- 10:50the Rams and the Seahawks. Was there a moment during the
- 10:54Broncos game that you were? In a way, it's OK because Bo
- 11:01Knicks is not coming back. There's no way that we're going
- 11:04to get in front of this jugger. I know how your mind sometimes
- 11:07works. I think I said so about week 17,
- 11:09year 16, that this team doesn't have a prayer.
- 11:13But but just your fandom and you're that close to getting to
- 11:15a Super Bowl, I just wondered kind of in your mind if there
- 11:18was ever that moment where he said it's fine?
- 11:21Yeah, I was. I was.
- 11:23I wasn't as downtrodden as I normally would have been.
- 11:27So yeah, I guess maybe. Yeah, they kind of played
- 11:29together. I didn't think that this team
- 11:30had what it takes to win a Super Bowl.
- 11:32But you know, if they would have got there, obviously I would
- 11:35have painted my face. No, I wouldn't have, but
- 11:38unfortunate. But Patriots, I just hope it's a
- 11:41good game. That's all we ask, right?
- 11:42We say the same thing every final game or whatever.
- 11:45Just be a good game. Just give us something to go
- 11:48into the offseason. Not a not a game that you kind
- 11:51of tune out, whether it's the third period or the 8th and 9th
- 11:56inning and it's a big just whatever.
- 11:57Just make it a good game and that's all we ask for.
- 11:59Hopefully we will get that. We shall see.
- 12:02I don't give much. Don't put much stock into the
- 12:05fact we're going to get a good game, do you?
- 12:07I, I don't think at this point there's a whole lot that I can
- 12:11put together with a big easy. Well, this is the game plan.
- 12:15This is how it is. It's gonna be the Patriots
- 12:18against the Rams way back in the first Super Bowl is free, right?
- 12:20It's gotta be an incredible game plan.
- 12:23It has to be, Boy, how did they do that?
- 12:26It's gonna have to be something like that.
- 12:27And then Drake May has to be a lot better.
- 12:29He has to be a lot better than what he was certainly in Sunday.
- 12:33Boys, a weapon with his legs. Yes, maybe it's that, maybe
- 12:36that's the direction that you go and you're going to have to use
- 12:38him and he's going to have to carry it 7-8 ten times in the
- 12:42game. And some design runs, a lot of
- 12:44roll outs doing those kind of things and changing because if
- 12:47you just let Seattle pin their ears back, yeah, what was it, 43
- 12:50to 8 or whatever? The Seahawks, Broncos.
- 12:53Yeah. That was the one that the first
- 12:55snap of the game went over Peyton Manning's head in for a
- 12:57safety, and it was all downhill from there.
- 13:00I mean, if I think the likelihood of a blowout is
- 13:03certainly more likely was that. The last blowout we've seen, I
- 13:06did. You know what, I I guess I could
- 13:07have checked. No.
- 13:08Last year? What was the final last year?
- 13:11Well, the Chiefs, I mean. The Eagles.
- 13:12The Eagles. Seemingly had their they were in
- 13:14cruise control, right? Yeah.
- 13:16Didn't did the Chiefs get the first possession of the
- 13:18second-half? I thought that there was a
- 13:20chance for the Chiefs to get back into it and very quickly
- 13:22that went away. There was, I think we were maybe
- 13:25even trying to talk ourselves into it.
- 13:27I mean, just Philadelphia was dominant 40 they were. 4022 was
- 13:30the final. A year ago and there was a late
- 13:31score in that game too I think. Yes, we also had another Chiefs
- 13:34blowout in the Super Bowl in Tampa after the COVID year.
- 13:39Buccaneers over the Chiefs 31 nine Remember, Mahomes were just
- 13:42getting beat up in that game. The.
- 13:43Offensive line it was. Awful, absolutely awful in that
- 13:46one. So there haven't been a ton.
- 13:47We've been relatively fortunate, yes, absolutely.
- 13:50We've seen the big comebacks and a lot of great games, but on the
- 13:54paper right now does not feel like this is going to be 1 of.
- 13:57Them No absolutely. Let's switch gears talk a little
- 14:01basketball here. I was been off They will play on
- 14:04Wednesday. By the way, our buddy Doctor
- 14:06Stephen Fuller's got a chance for 2/2 of you Not Now to win
- 14:09tickets to go see the game coming up here on on Wednesday
- 14:13night is that's a 7:00 tip. Don't know offhand what the what
- 14:18the tip time is for that one I. Think it's 7 but I could be.
- 14:22I might may be mistaken. Certainly 6:00.
- 14:25It's an early game, too. BTN.
- 14:27And Iowa State plays Thursday at 6:00 again.
- 14:30Really. Yes, So, so good.
- 14:32We got a couple of early ones. I was been off.
- 14:35I think it's I think that they're probably a good time for
- 14:38them to be off. I do like the fact that
- 14:41obviously how they're going into this seemingly, you know,
- 14:45beating teams that they should have.
- 14:46But we'll see if that Indiana victory that they were able to
- 14:49to muster up here will continue going forward.
- 14:53And then they came back, obviously had a nice win,
- 14:55although it certainly wasn't as comfortable as the points Brett
- 14:58said it was supposed to be. I was staying.
- 15:00On the other hand, Trent, they were up 30 at the end of 20
- 15:02minutes on Saturday against an Oklahoma State team.
- 15:05So, I mean, does does TJ on one hand, let her say this?
- 15:10Does he? Kind of.
- 15:13They won the game convincingly, won by 13, but the 2nd 20 of the
- 15:16final 20 minutes was not exactly Iowa State basketball, so, well,
- 15:20they flexed early. The fact that he doesn't, he
- 15:23does get to coach him up a little bit because you can't
- 15:26play like that and expect to win more games.
- 15:28I think it's perfect. I think it is too.
- 15:30The bugaboo for this team has been slow starts.
- 15:33All right? We, we conquered that dragon,
- 15:35right? We, we got that one knocked off.
- 15:37We came out in a hot start. Munchilovich was outstanding.
- 15:40Good. God, he's playing as you know
- 15:41what? Off we're we're knocking down
- 15:42shots. We're doing exactly what we've
- 15:44talked about with this team at a lot of different points.
- 15:46I mean, there's some of those tomato Cam 9 conference games.
- 15:48They got off to slow starts against awful teams.
- 15:50So this isn't just against good teams.
- 15:52This has been throughout the course of the season.
- 15:54It's been a pretty major issue for this squad.
- 15:56All right, we did that. We did exactly.
- 15:57Yet we gave him 50 points in the second-half against Oklahoma
- 16:01State. We know can score.
- 16:02That plays an incredibly fast pace, but I think it worked out
- 16:05about as well as you can kind of draw up a game if you will, to
- 16:08still have a little bit of that carrot dangling out there.
- 16:11This is what we need to do. Complete 40 minutes.
- 16:14All the coaching cliches, you have that opportunity to do it.
- 16:17I thought Oklahoma State was going to be live and they just
- 16:19completely took it out of everything.
- 16:20There was that one possession in the first half where Oklahoma
- 16:22State got like 4 offensive. Readouts.
- 16:25Unbelievable and they just couldn't hit anything right.
- 16:28The defense was absolutely tremendous in that game.
- 16:31I think overall it's something that you could and I, I didn't
- 16:33watch the last, I don't know, 70 minutes cuz I got over to
- 16:36Illinois, Purdue and I could not turn away.
- 16:38I could not turn away so. So did you learn more about
- 16:41Illinois or more about Purdue and the fact that maybe it's
- 16:43Purdue? Were they overrated?
- 16:45I I don't think Purdue's a national.
- 16:46Championship. I don't think they are either.
- 16:48I never thought they were. I didn't want to put them in
- 16:50that slot. They're still really good.
- 16:52Could they get to another Final Four?
- 16:53Absolutely. But when at all I I don't see
- 16:56that Illinois, I think the conversation is different and
- 17:00though I still have concerns about them on the defensive end
- 17:03of the floor and I know metrics pay them as a very good
- 17:05defensive team. I still that would be maybe the
- 17:08bugaboo. But they can beat you so many
- 17:10different ways. And when you put together that
- 17:12kind of performance and you do it without one of your best
- 17:15players, you do it on the road. I just think yes, it said a
- 17:19whole lot more about the Illini and what they can be.
- 17:21Like Final Four or win it all. Final Four, Illinois, I have won
- 17:27a national championship in our lifetime.
- 17:29Final Fours, well, they won I guess what, 25 years ago with
- 17:32that group, but it's been a long, long time for them.
- 17:35I see them though in that mix. After that time tier though,
- 17:38definitely them. Like the Texas Tech.
- 17:40That tier of team that I really like is those not dark horse
- 17:43candidates, but that next tier that's definitely out of the
- 17:45group. Those two teams are definitely
- 17:47the two that I like the most. Remember I was telling you my
- 17:49accounts completely yes bankrupt.
- 17:52How's 80 to one on? I'll that's a good one.
- 17:55Now the problem is you got to get there.
- 17:57Cut down the Nets. You got to cut down the Nets and
- 17:58if you don't have anything left your account, there's no hedging
- 18:01opportunities even if they would make a deep run out of the
- 18:04Illini. But absolutely, just such a fun
- 18:06game to watch and that was just one of many.
- 18:09We had guys going off. You had Wagler, of course, score
- 18:11in the 40s. He's.
- 18:11So good. Debanzel, what he was doing on
- 18:14Saturday, just I don't remember a day where we had as many 40
- 18:18point performances like we did in that one.
- 18:22And overall it was just a great day on Saturday.
- 18:24We're talking about basketball for the state.
- 18:26How about Drake going on the road getting Drake?
- 18:29'S had Drake's playing. Well they are, yeah.
- 18:31It looks like they are figuring it out.
- 18:33I agree. Lot of new pieces had injuries
- 18:35early this season. It feels like it's all coming
- 18:37together for them. They beat Murray State in there,
- 18:40and Murray State never had a chance.
- 18:42Yeah. I mean, they were the better
- 18:42team on the floor the entire time.
- 18:44And Edinbury State, still in first place, goes to the McLeod
- 18:47Center and you and I gets a good, good win.
- 18:49And that one goes over 80 points.
- 18:51Got the win. Watch the last 10 minutes or so.
- 18:53That one, as I was on what CBS Sports Network I think had it.
- 18:56So I was watching that Leon Bond really really good in the game
- 19:01and the kid that they they brought in from NC State Dwarf I
- 19:05think is his name. Yeah, he's he's from Quebec,
- 19:07Yes. Yeah, good Frenchman.
- 19:09I know you like that one. He he's not thick, but he's tall
- 19:15and they don't have a whole lot of big bodies.
- 19:17He was really, really good, I thought, in the game and if he
- 19:19continues to play like that, they got a chance.
- 19:22They got a chance here. Well, they needed that because
- 19:24they've been going the wrong way.
- 19:25Quinn for Drake is is what a what?
- 19:27A player? He's building an all Valley type
- 19:29of resume this year. He's been terrific.
- 19:34We'll see where it goes. Hopefully they what did they
- 19:36play? They played.
- 19:38They played twice late. Late, right?
- 19:40Like Valentine's Day? Is it around there?
- 19:42The 1st. Game is yeah, the day after
- 19:45Sunday, February 15th, that one will.
- 19:48Be here or there. It's going to be in Cedar Falls
- 19:50and then the season finale will be in Des Moines.
- 19:54I mean, you can talk about positioning, huge possibility of
- 19:57what that's kind of going to look like for them.
- 20:00At least getting a bye right getting into the quarterfinals.
- 20:02I'm anxious to talk to Adam Emenecker tomorrow because it'd
- 20:05be kind of tough to last couple of weeks.
- 20:06Absolutely talk about bad basketball.
- 20:09Finally get an opportunity here to talk about some good
- 20:11basketball. All right, Scott, documents

- 22:31Kicking off our number two, Bill Seals covers Iowa State
- 22:34cyclonereport.com. Bill will join us in 30 minutes.
- 22:37Right now Scott Dockerman is with us from The Athletic as
- 22:41they celebrate their ten year anniversary.
- 22:44Doc, thanks for popping on. Appreciate it as always.
- 22:48Good to speak with the Scott Dockerman.
- 22:49So where were you when The Athletic launched 10 years ago?
- 22:54Were you still with that? What was it called?
- 22:56Land of Land of 10. Land of 10.
- 22:59Yeah, Yeah. Is that where you were?
- 23:00No, not quite. I was still with the Cedar
- 23:03Rapids at that until August of 16.
- 23:07And then I was with Land of 10 until early July of, of 2018.
- 23:13And then I went over to the Athletic.
- 23:15So I've been there 7 1/2 years. So it's it's it's kind of flown
- 23:19by. It's, yeah.
- 23:20Wild ride. And I really didn't know much
- 23:23about The Athletic until like a year or so after it debuted.
- 23:28And, and it's it's certainly has taken off.
- 23:31I think we have 10 million subscribers.
- 23:32It's unbelievable, Doc, when it first launched, I, you know, I
- 23:35gave it, you know, this might last six months because you
- 23:37couldn't get a credit press credential.
- 23:39I think you were basically just in Chicago.
- 23:41Do I have that right? And then you added a couple more
- 23:44cities and now I mean, it's, it's appointment.
- 23:47It's an appointment click every day just to keep up on it.
- 23:51Obviously the New York Times, you guys have taken over that
- 23:54sports section, which is great to see, see that you've expanded
- 23:57your reach. So what's next for the athletic
- 24:00doc? I mean, I'm not sure you're in
- 24:02those meetings. You just obviously stay in your
- 24:05lane. But what?
- 24:07What do you think's next? Well, that's a great question.
- 24:11I mean, you know, we're, I can say that, you know, I, I, I
- 24:15learn of things probably after everybody else has been told,
- 24:19but it comes to the, but I do think I know this is going to be
- 24:22a, a very busy year for us, no question about it.
- 24:24I mean, we cover everything. We have the largest sports staff
- 24:27in the world for we have 500 full time employees and we,
- 24:32we've got the Olympics coming up in Italy.
- 24:35I won't be there. We do have several people who
- 24:37are and, and then in the summer we'll cover the World Cup and I
- 24:41do think I am going to be giving my toe into that.
- 24:44So, and then, you know, last week I was in Miami for the
- 24:47national championship and we've got, you know, Super Bowl coming
- 24:51up. So we're, we're going to be all
- 24:52over the place. And as far as anything, any
- 24:54expansions, I, I don't know of anything like that, but I know
- 24:58we're kind of pivoting a little bit more to video and, and we're
- 25:02hoping to continue to grow. With that your main beat is
- 25:07college football and there was some news today on college
- 25:10football as the Big 12 championship game that had been
- 25:13kind of married to that noon Eastern slot 11:00 AM Saturday
- 25:16morning to kick off Championship Saturday is no more.
- 25:19The ACC now gets that slot meeting.
- 25:22The Big 10's going to have a stand alone window if you will,
- 25:24at least out of the major conferences at night on
- 25:26Saturdays and the Big 12 going to Friday.
- 25:30Good move for the Big 12 getting that spotlight.
- 25:34I think so. I, I think, you know, that was
- 25:37kind of vacated by the when the PAC 12 imploded.
- 25:40And the last one was a great game between Oregon and
- 25:44Washington when they played on that Friday night and got a lot
- 25:46of viewership. And, and I think that there is
- 25:49fertile ground there. And and this year, as we saw, I
- 25:51think I can't remember specifically which teams played,
- 25:54which tells you everything you need to know.
- 25:57You know, you know, I think it was the American was in that
- 25:59slot. And, and when, when you you see
- 26:03kind of the, the viewership for those games, it makes perfect
- 26:07sense because the Big 12 in that early slot got I think it was
- 26:119.3 million, which is really good for the most part, but it
- 26:15could probably do the same or a little bit more on Friday night.
- 26:18And there you look at in addition to the ACC which got
- 26:21murdered by the, you know, by the Big 10.
- 26:24I mean, Big 10 had, you know, 8.3 million and they had like
- 26:273.5, you know, so you want to get off of the SEC or Big 10
- 26:31challenge when it comes to going head to head.
- 26:34And and granted, you know, you're going to have probably
- 26:36the American eyes, I assume going to that night position for
- 26:40ESPN, but they're going to get the same number of views pretty
- 26:42much anyway. So I I think it's a good move
- 26:45for the Big 12. I don't think it's permanent.
- 26:48I think it's going to be a rotational type situation
- 26:50really. But still, yeah, I think it they
- 26:52may move back. You know, it's either noon
- 26:56Eastern Time kickoff on Saturday or, you know, even move around a
- 27:00little bit from there. But but for this year
- 27:02specifically, it's definitely going to be that Friday night
- 27:05window and I think it is a good move.
- 27:07I think it's a great move for the ACC because as you guys have
- 27:09said, they get buried caught up against the Big 10 and they've
- 27:13always got an A-Team there. It's usually Herb St. and Fowler
- 27:17do in that game or it had been in the past, but maybe maybe
- 27:19this year they went off of it anyways.
- 27:21Well, along those same lines, talk is about what what's coming
- 27:24in five years. If I would have asked you this,
- 27:26you know, when your career started, what's college
- 27:28athletics going to look like? One more the same?
- 27:30Not really not going to be much change.
- 27:32But if I'd asked you five years ago, what's on the horizon, I
- 27:35mean, it's just been from one extreme to the other, just all
- 27:38the changes, the the open transfers, the paying of the
- 27:42athletes, etcetera, etcetera. The expense.
- 27:45We went from no playoff to a college football for the four
- 27:47teams to now 12 teams. So, so point being Doc is it's
- 27:51it's it's ever evolving. How much more is there left to
- 27:55evolve and got your crystal ball still take a look at it for us,
- 27:59would you? Oh, wow, don't hold me to all
- 28:02this, but you know, this is off the cuff, but I, I think that
- 28:06there's two key areas that we're going to see some probably
- 28:09significant change. One is I, I would not be a bit
- 28:12surprised to see some sort of declaration of employee status,
- 28:17collective bargaining, something to that effect involving
- 28:21athletes. We we've seen too much chaos.
- 28:24It's, it's gotta change and I think it's, it's not so much the
- 28:27player movement and player pay as it is the players.
- 28:32Either they're too naive or there's not enough teeth to when
- 28:36they do sign a contract and then they try to get out of it, that
- 28:40needs to change because that's not real life.
- 28:42She can't do that in any other profession.
- 28:44So why would you be able to do here?
- 28:46And then people will say, well, they're not pro athletes.
- 28:48Well, they kind of are, but they're not designated as
- 28:50employees. So somewhere they're going to
- 28:52have to get that thing figured out.
- 28:55The other thing is I, I think we will absolutely see an expanded
- 28:58playoffs. You know, whether it's 16 or
- 29:00beyond, it's just a matter of when.
- 29:02And, and of course, the Big 10 in SEC could not come to an
- 29:05agreement on Friday, which was expected.
- 29:09You know, Tony Patini wants a larger field and saying he wants
- 29:14to try 16 right now. They're gonna go to 12 for one
- 29:17year. I I mean, it's gonna go to 16 at
- 29:20some point. It's just at what is gonna be
- 29:22the, you know the level of the, the the auto bids are out the
- 29:26door. That's not gonna happen.
- 29:28But are they gonna expand it from there and is Petiti gonna
- 29:31be able to get that kind of extraction from the SEC?
- 29:34That I do not know. So, but I do expect a minimum of
- 29:3916 team field if not more opportunities beyond that,
- 29:43whether it's wild card rounds or or an, you know, expansion to 24
- 29:47in five years. You mentioned Tony Battitti, the
- 29:50Big 10 commissioner came from television and that's his
- 29:52background, that one of the reasons that he wants the 2014
- 29:56field where the opportunity of playing those championship
- 29:58weekend events is for TV and more inventory and with it more
- 30:02money for his conference. I know you've been pretty
- 30:05outright in Tony Battitti not exactly being a speaking piece,
- 30:10you know, mouthpiece for the conference at the same level we
- 30:12see other commissioners. How would you grade him at this
- 30:15point in his time as a Big 10 commissioner and and going
- 30:18forward, what does he need to change in your mind to to get to
- 30:21that upper echelon and be considered a great commissioner
- 30:23of the conference? There's a lot, I mean, I would
- 30:27not. I mean, if you grade him on
- 30:29results, I mean the Big 10 just had three, the third straight
- 30:33national title in football. And and if that's what you grade
- 30:36them on, kind of like ads, if you grade them on that, I mean,
- 30:39then then you've got to say a for sure.
- 30:40Or if it's just strictly on field.
- 30:42But I don't think it is. I mean, as a commissioner,
- 30:44you've got more things to it tend to, I think he had to kind
- 30:48of take over from Kevin Warren, who was not a real successful
- 30:52commissioner. He made both, both organizations
- 30:55better when he left for the Bears and which is kind of
- 30:59funny. But he, I, I, I would say,
- 31:01though, that his grandiose ideas and plans have failed and he's
- 31:06failed to garner the kind of support that he needs to, to be
- 31:09successful in that, in this position.
- 31:11And that, you know, the, it's not private equity, but the UC
- 31:15Investments Fund, 2.4 billion dollars.
- 31:17He failed to, to rally everybody under his umbrella to, to join
- 31:22it. And that is a failure period.
- 31:24And then you look at, you know, the ideas and thoughts that he's
- 31:27wanted to do with the playoff. He's an unable and, and it's
- 31:30just a bicameral talk with him and Greg Sankey.
- 31:33He's been able to unable to sway him to his way of thinking.
- 31:36So that again, that's a failure. And I think even though he has
- 31:40some really interesting ideas, he's a big time ideas guy, but
- 31:44he's not very, you know, he doesn't didn't want to go out
- 31:47and talk very often. I mean, last week at the
- 31:49national title game, he could not leave the dais faster after
- 31:54an Indiana Indiana clinched. And so Ross Dellinger and I were
- 32:00chasing him down. We probably sprinted a good 60
- 32:03yards between a ton of people that take to get him and Ross
- 32:06kind of cornered him on one side eye to the other.
- 32:08And he talked for a minute 46 and I'm like, you know what, you
- 32:13know, what does this mean for your league?
- 32:15He won three straight national titles, you know, and I mean, if
- 32:18any time he's going to beat on your chest to say we're the
- 32:20best, do it now. And Lord knows Greg think he
- 32:22would. And he was just kind of watered
- 32:24down and and milk toast almost and then kept backing up and
- 32:28couldn't wait to get out of that.
- 32:29And I'm thinking, you know, and I talked to a couple other
- 32:31people connected to the Big 10 and they're they're mad because
- 32:35they're thinking this is an opportunity to really and you
- 32:38and a spillover effect by him not talking about how great the
- 32:43Big 10 is, is He's not talking about how good Iowa was or
- 32:47Illinois or Washington or USC. And that's how you get Iowa
- 32:50ranked 17th and Vanderbilt 13th or 15th, I'm sorry, and Iowa
- 32:5417th. And then you don't get Illinois,
- 32:57who won nine games, beat Tennessee in a bowl game, into
- 33:00the top 25. You don't get Washington into
- 33:02the top 25. And they blew out Boise State in
- 33:04a bowl game. That's what the the, the
- 33:06spillover is by your commissioner not talking.
- 33:09So I got to give him a low grade on this.
- 33:11He can't sell people on his ideas.
- 33:13And he hasn't he isn't representing the conference well
- 33:16in the public light. I mean, that's a, you know, if
- 33:18it wasn't for the national titles.
- 33:20I mean, it's a clear F. But you know, right now I don't
- 33:23give him much higher than a barely passing grade.
- 33:26Speaking of the the latest national title, you and Bruce
- 33:29Feldman and really good piece on how Indiana was built.
- 33:33And suffice to say it was different than most people would
- 33:38if you didn't follow them closely.
- 33:39Well, they just spent their money, right?
- 33:40They just went and got one portal shop after another.
- 33:43Not the case. Scott Doctorman.
- 33:46Yeah, it was a really interesting way to develop his
- 33:49team because he'd he'd worked within some of the holdovers
- 33:54that he had and and some of them left.
- 33:56There were two very prominent players, starters on this year's
- 33:59team that that left as soon as he got there.
- 34:01Khalil Benson went to Colorado, the right tackle and Lewis
- 34:04Moore, the safety went to Ole Miss And it was and both of them
- 34:08told me that wasn't about Signetti.
- 34:12It was just that, you know, they they were three and nine.
- 34:15Their coach got fired. And it's like, well, I want to
- 34:17bet on myself and see kind of what else is out there.
- 34:19And, and Signetti said, fine, go, go do it.
- 34:22But then when they wanted to come back, he welcomed him back
- 34:24And and Signetti said, look, it's a business decision.
- 34:26And I think he realizes it that everybody else tries to pass it
- 34:30off as we're family here. And no, it's business.
- 34:33I mean, you're paying them now. You want to win, they want to
- 34:35win, you do what's best. And I he was that way.
- 34:38And probably the most revealing one to me was Omar Ku Cooper,
- 34:41who you know, by mid season he was ready to transfer and then
- 34:45when was out the door and then he got a high ankle sprain and
- 34:48he had no market and he just figured, well, I might as well
- 34:50stay. And he turned into a really,
- 34:53really good player for Indiana. And probably, you know, I would
- 34:56say at minimum a second day pick in the draft.
- 35:00You know, when he, you know, whenever he comes out.
- 35:02So I think it is a really fascinating story.
- 35:05I think everybody should study what Indiana did and see how
- 35:08that can, you know, you could work in a your makeover, whether
- 35:12that's an Ames or, or, you know, Penn State or wherever, because
- 35:16I think there's a lot of lessons that can be taken from that.
- 35:19And now Signetti built a national champion at the losing
- 35:22his program in NCAA history. Did Kirk Ferrets maybe learn
- 35:25some things too? Because you look at this
- 35:27transfer hall and outside of what one guy who is a stopgap at
- 35:31defensive tackle with Stevenson, this is a lot of guys with a lot
- 35:34of years of eligibility building it certainly a different way
- 35:37than what we've seen in the past is, is this what I was playing
- 35:41is, is looking at Indiana and saying, hey, that makes sense.
- 35:43Guys that need to learn our system.
- 35:45It's not easy to do in one year. These multi year guys are the
- 35:48fabric and maybe the chance for I would to take a next step.
- 35:52I think it's it works more in parallel.
- 35:55This was Iowa's plan pretty much all along.
- 35:58I had side conversations with a few of the coaches and, and
- 36:02people there and, and part of what they were starting to
- 36:05experience was when they were bringing in one year guys that
- 36:08were pretty good. It was like by the time they
- 36:11they started operating at a really high level, then they
- 36:14left, you know, Mark Gronowski's case in point, but you know,
- 36:17also guys like Jonah Pace and, and Jack Heflin going back and
- 36:21then a few others. And they really like the
- 36:23trajectory arc of study someone like Zach Van Volkenburg, where
- 36:27he had a multiple years and you could see that growth.
- 36:29So they figured that that was the best way for Iowa, which was
- 36:33get some talented players who've proven themselves on the field
- 36:38and get them to where you could have them for multiple years.
- 36:41And and I mean, this Hall is is terrific, you know, and, and
- 36:45talking to a lot of people about this and, you know, national and
- 36:48and otherwise, I mean, they people feel like this is a
- 36:51really good use of Iowa's money and and, and really pushing that
- 36:57button. So now will it parlay into more
- 36:59than nine wins next year? I don't know.
- 37:01That's it's way too early to figure that out.
- 37:03But but I do think that they did the right thing rather than just
- 37:07go get, hey, this four-star wide receiver from Chicago.
- 37:10Chicago is at Ohio State and barely played.
- 37:12He's in the portal. And then he ends up with like a
- 37:14couple of catches and he's not nobody.
- 37:17So I think they they understand production is more valuable than
- 37:21potential. I think there's what, 55 to 6055
- 37:25hundred 6000 kids still in the portal, which is unbelievable.
- 37:29Scott Dockerman from the Athletic Dock.
- 37:31What? Well, US athletic subscribers
- 37:33who've been there for 10 years or anybody that even if you just
- 37:36signed up, what, what have you got working on this week?
- 37:39Yeah, tomorrow the Big 10 schedule becomes is unveiled.
- 37:43So I'm going to have two different pieces on that.
- 37:45One's just kind of a headline hitting the the main topics.
- 37:48But then I'm doing a ranking of 1 to 81 of the games to to see
- 37:53on this year's Big 10 schedule. You know, Ohio State and
- 37:56Indiana's number one and and Maryland at Purdue is #81 I can
- 38:02tell you that it's pretty easy to figure that out.
- 38:05But I'm doing that ranking and looking at the bowls because
- 38:08that's the next step in this CFP mess, which is whether they have
- 38:12an extension for one more year. And what does that mean for like
- 38:15the Alamo Bowl? Do they have to take a PAC 12
- 38:17team that's new into? The.
- 38:21Yeah, do you want Fresno State? No, you know, and then no,
- 38:25nobody else does either. So so I'm looking at that and
- 38:28I'm also it's it's draft season. So I've got me and Nick, Nick
- 38:32Baumgartner are doing a or two Brown mock draft this week.
- 38:37So yeah, we got a lot of things on my plate now.
- 38:40Football season is not over for me.
- 38:42Hell no, good, keep it going. And it just just an aside, I'm
- 38:45guessing if you would have done the the ranking of the Big 10
- 38:47games over the last whatever the 7 1/2 years that you were there,
- 38:51most years Michigan, Ohio State would have topped that list.
- 38:54But that has been knocked off its perch this year.
- 38:56And you got the right one, Doc Great stuff.
- 38:58Look forward to reading your pieces as we always do and are
- 39:01always grateful when you join us on Mondays.
- 39:03Thank you, Scott Dockerman. Appreciate it.
- 39:06Yep. Thanks for having me.
- 39:07Appreciate you. Good.
- 39:07To talk to you, Scott Dockman, as we check in on a variety of
- 39:10topics. We'll finish up our #1 Miller
- 39:12and Condon, you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:15Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 39:16Final couple of minutes, First hour of the program.
- 39:19It's coming up at hour number two.
- 39:21Bill Seals will join us. Iowa State conversation to kick
- 39:24off the second hour of the program.
- 39:25So I don't know what you were doing on Saturday night.
- 39:28I know what I wasn't doing on Saturday night watching the
- 39:30Netflix special. The guy, I mean, I can't even, I
- 39:35can't even watch that because I get dizzy and nauseous and I'm
- 39:38like, Oh my God, I don't want to see a guy fall to his death.
- 39:42I saw the social media about it. Never got over there.
- 39:46Ella was over at, she was at a birthday party and escape room
- 39:49with her friends. So we had the house kind of
- 39:51where herself, Jack was out playing.
- 39:53And I think we just caught up on a show, something that we
- 39:55haven't done in a long time. But yeah, I saw the social media
- 39:58buzz about it. I I'm not scared of heights.
- 40:01I don't get too crazy, but I don't love them and the same
- 40:05kind of thing. Even the curiosity of it and so
- 40:07many people talking about I'm like, no, I'm good.
- 40:10I'm fine with that. And they had a was was Elle
- 40:12Duncan, who left from ESPN. She was actually in studio
- 40:16commenting on this. She was.
- 40:17So yeah, she's taking a role with Netflix.
- 40:19She's going to be their sports person.
- 40:21She's kind of the face sounded like maybe she talked too much.
- 40:23That was is. That right?
- 40:25So she did what Rich Eisen did with the NFL Network and what
- 40:28Dave Revson did with the Big 10. Good for her.
- 40:31Yes, absolutely. If it works out on Netflix, it
- 40:33should. They got money.
- 40:35Yeah, they do. And now they're getting into
- 40:36podcasts. Really.
- 40:38Oh yeah, Bill Simmons podcast now is over there.
- 40:40Well, it's still audio on Spotify, but yes, it is.
- 40:43Also, you see the video feed now and a bunch of them spitting
- 40:47Chiclets. The hockey, that's one of them.
- 40:48Yeah, how about that, by the way, in case you were wondering,
- 40:51Yes, should there Sanders, he's a Pro Bowler.
- 40:54How bad is the AFC? You got to stoop to chador
- 40:57Sanders. Our two next.
