- 0:00Welcome to Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:01Chow, where we bring you the latest in medical and health news from around the world.
- 0:07I'm Dr.
- 0:07Chi-Ming Chow, and today we have a packed episode with important updates that you won't
- 0:12want to miss.
- 0:14Let's dive right in with our first story.
- 0:19The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, has expanded what is now the largest
- 0:25known outbreak of cyclosporiasis to fifteen states.
- 0:29This outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.
- 0:34This information comes from three individuals who are familiar with the ongoing
- 0:39investigation.
- 0:40Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which
- 0:47is spread by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite.
- 0:51Symptoms can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, and they can last from a
- 0:56few days to more than a month.
- 0:59The expansion of the outbreak to include six additional states highlights the widespread
- 1:04nature of this issue.
- 1:06The CDC is actively working with public health officials in the affected states to trace and
- 1:13control the source of the contamination.
- 1:16This outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the challenges
- 1:21that can arise in tracking foodborne illnesses, especially when they cross state and
- 1:27international borders.
- 1:29What makes this outbreak particularly concerning is the potential for the illness to
- 1:34spread further if the contaminated produce is not quickly identified and removed from the
- 1:39supply chain.
- 1:40The CDC urges consumers to be aware of the symptoms of cyclosporiasis and to seek medical
- 1:46attention if they experience any signs of the illness, particularly if they have consumed
- 1:51shredded iceberg lettuce recently.
- 1:53As always, we'll keep you updated on any new developments regarding this outbreak.
- 1:59It's crucial to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to protect your health.
- 2:04Now, let's move on to our next story of the day.
- 2:09This year, the US News & World Report has released its much-anticipated list of the "best
- 2:15of the best" hospitals in America, and it's quite remarkable for a few cities and health
- 2:19systems.
- 2:20Instead of numerically ranking hospitals as they did until two thousand twenty-three, the
- 2:25list now presents twenty institutions alphabetically as an "honor roll."
- 2:30Interestingly, one health system has made the list three times.
- 2:35That's right, the Mayo Clinic is recognized for its operations in Rochester, Minnesota,
- 2:40Phoenix, Arizona, and Jacksonville, Florida.
- 2:45New York City also shines with three institutions making the list: Mount Sinai,
- 2:50NewYork-Presbyterian, and NYU Langone.
- 2:54Meanwhile, a few cities have two hospitals featured on the honor roll.
- 2:58Boston boasts Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
- 3:04Chicago is represented by Northwestern Medicine-Northwestern Memorial Hospital and
- 3:09Rush University Medical Center.
- 3:11Los Angeles has Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center on the list.
- 3:20California takes the crown as the state with the most honorees, with five hospitals making
- 3:25the cut.
- 3:26In addition to the two Los Angeles hospitals, Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital in Palo
- 3:31Alto, UC San Diego Health in La Jolla, Hillcrest, and East Campus Medical Centers, and
- 3:37UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco also made the honor roll.
- 3:42US News emphasizes that the honor roll is just one aspect of their comprehensive
- 3:49best-hospitals package.
- 3:51They also provide roundups of the best hospitals in each state and in around one
- 3:56hundred major metro areas, making it easier for everyone to find excellent care close to home.
- 4:02Additionally, they recognize five hundred and five best regional hospitals.
- 4:09The rankings are based on patient outcomes and other factors that matter to patients, such as
- 4:14the quality of their overall experience and interactions with the nursing staff.
- 4:18It's important to note, though, that US News states that for most illnesses, patients do not
- 4:24need to go to an honor roll hospital.
- 4:27Traveling away from home and paying expenses for out-of-network care might not be necessary.
- 4:33All rankings and ratings should be seen as a starting point for patients considering where
- 4:38to seek care, in consultation with their doctors.
- 4:41Individual diagnosis, insurance coverage, and personal priorities remain crucial factors in
- 4:47making the best choice for one's healthcare needs.
- 4:50In summary, US News highlights twenty hospitals that excel across most or all types of care
- 4:57evaluated by the magazine.
- 5:00Hospitals received points based on their national ranking in fourteen specialties.
- 5:05The more specialties and the higher their rank, the more points they received.
- 5:10Being rated as High Performing in maternity care and any of the twenty-three evaluated
- 5:14procedures and conditions also contributed to their standing on the honor roll.
- 5:21In a significant development, Health Canada has given the green light to pharmaceutical company
- 5:26Moderna to conduct a clinical trial for an mRNA vaccine targeting the Ebola virus.
- 5:33This news marks Canada as the second country to authorize a Phase One clinical trial for a
- 5:39Bundibugyo virus vaccine candidate, following the United Kingdom.
- 5:43This strain of the Ebola virus is currently behind a severe outbreak in the Democratic
- 5:49Republic of the Congo, where the situation remains dire.
- 5:53The Bundibugyo virus is part of the Ebola family, and as of now, there is no licensed
- 5:59vaccine or treatment available for this particular strain.
- 6:03The trial in Canada will focus on whether the vaccine candidate can stimulate the
- 6:08participants' immune systems to produce antibodies against the virus.
- 6:12Importantly, participants will not be injected with the virus itself, alleviating some
- 6:18concerns about safety.
- 6:21This trial is just the beginning.
- 6:23Following its completion, Moderna will need to carry out additional phases of clinical trials
- 6:28before seeking approval from Health Canada for the vaccine.
- 6:32The approval for this trial comes amidst a backdrop of an explosive Ebola outbreak in
- 6:38Eastern Congo, specifically in the remote Ituri province.
- 6:43Over three thousand eight hundred cases have been reported with a death toll surpassing one
- 6:49thousand seven hundred as of the latest updates.
- 6:54The World Health Organization has declared this outbreak a public health emergency of
- 6:59international concern, reflecting the urgency and severity of the situation.
- 7:05In response, the Canadian government has also stepped up by providing eight million dollars
- 7:11in international assistance to help manage the outbreak.
- 7:15Furthermore, travelers from Ebola-affected regions are required to self-isolate for
- 7:20twenty-one days upon arrival in Canada, with additional measures in place to monitor and
- 7:26manage any potential spread.
- 7:29This clinical trial represents a critical step forward in the global effort to combat the
- 7:33Ebola virus, particularly the Bundibugyo strain.
- 7:38As we keep a close eye on the developments from this trial, it's crucial to recognize the
- 7:42collaborative efforts and international partnerships that are essential in tackling
- 7:46such global health challenges.
- 7:49We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes
- 7:53available.
- 7:56Today, we're delving into the world of summer footwear and its impact on our feet.
- 8:02As the temperatures rise, many of us reach for our trusty flip-flops to keep our feet cool and
- 8:07comfortable.
- 8:09Recently, flip-flops have undergone a fashionable transformation, with kitten heels
- 8:14becoming this summer's trendy twist.
- 8:17According to fashion expert Angela Baidoo, this style is easy to slip in and out of, offering a
- 8:23chic yet practical option for warm weather.
- 8:27However, flip-flops have gained a reputation for providing inadequate support and
- 8:31potentially causing harm to our feet.
- 8:34Is this reputation deserved?
- 8:36Baidoo notes that while they might not offer the best arch and joint support, many are now
- 8:41investing in customized flip-flops for better comfort.
- 8:45The ease of wear keeps them in demand despite the concerns.
- 8:50Podiatrist Dr.
- 8:52Helen Branthwaite, the chief clinical adviser at the Royal College of Podiatry, emphasizes
- 8:57that it's not accurate to label flip-flops as inherently bad.
- 9:01The issue arises when individuals transition abruptly from structured shoes to flip-flops,
- 9:06which might strain the feet more than usual.
- 9:09Over time, this can lead to changes in foot shape and increased susceptibility to injury.
- 9:15Dr.
- 9:16Branthwaite uses the analogy of a corset: if worn continuously, removing it would cause
- 9:21everything to "hang out." Similarly, removing structured support from the foot can lead to
- 9:26splay over time.
- 9:28So, what are the alternatives for maintaining both style and foot health during the summer?
- 9:33Angela Baidoo suggests opting for more supportive flip-flops, like FitFlops, which are
- 9:38sturdier and contoured.
- 9:40Sliders are making way for Crocs, especially among Generation Z, due to their comfort and
- 9:45orthopedic design.
- 9:48Footbed sandals like Birkenstocks are praised for similar benefits, and wooden clogs, favored
- 9:53by professionals who stand all day, are also back in vogue.
- 9:58For those seeking a bit of height, wedges offer a comfortable solution that provides support
- 10:03while enhancing the silhouette of the ankle.
- 10:05Fisherman-style sandals, reminiscent of 1970s fashion, offer a stylish alternative to
- 10:12loafers, suitable for both men and women.
- 10:16Minimalist barefoot shoes are another trend, but Dr.
- 10:19Branthwaite advises easing into them gradually to avoid injury.
- 10:23Her top tips for happy feet include paying attention to the shoe sole's material, ensuring
- 10:29it supports your foot's movement, and regularly checking the condition of your feet.
- 10:33Moisturizing your feet daily and getting them measured regularly are also crucial practices.
- 10:39In conclusion, while summer sandals like flip-flops offer convenience and style, it's
- 10:44essential to consider their impact on foot health.
- 10:47By choosing supportive alternatives and following expert advice, we can enjoy the
- 10:51summer sun without sacrificing our foot well-being.
- 10:54Stay tuned for more health insights in our upcoming segments.
- 11:00As wildfires continue to rage across British Columbia, the Metro Vancouver Regional District
- 11:05has upgraded an air quality warning for the eastern Fraser Valley.
- 11:10Residents in areas like Chilliwack, Agassiz, and Hope are being urged to avoid outdoor
- 11:16activities due to the "very high health risk" associated with the smoke-filled air.
- 11:22This orange alert replaces the previous yellow alert, which already indicated a high health
- 11:27risk and advised reducing outdoor exercise.
- 11:32Christopher Lam, the president of the British Columbia Lung Foundation, offered a bit of
- 11:37levity amidst the seriousness of the situation, suggesting that this air quality warning might
- 11:42just be the perfect excuse to skip a workout.
- 11:46However, the situation remains critical, with major wildfires forcing thousands of
- 11:53evacuations and blanketing regions in smoke.
- 11:57The smoke has turned the skies grey and given the sun a red-orange hue, creating an eerie
- 12:04atmosphere.
- 12:06The smoky conditions are largely attributed to wildfire complexes near Clinton and Boston Bar,
- 12:12which have been burning since the start of July.
- 12:15These fires have destroyed structures on about 120 properties near Clinton, adding to the
- 12:21devastation.
- 12:22The worsening air quality across British Columbia is a growing concern, particularly for
- 12:27individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma.
- 12:31Diana Pentland, a resident of Chilliwack, expressed her worries about the effects of the
- 12:36smoke on her asthma as she ventured out for a walk.
- 12:40The province's Air Quality Health Index map paints a troubling picture.
- 12:44While much of the Okanagan and areas like Kamloops are experiencing a moderate health
- 12:49risk, the eastern Fraser Valley is facing a very high risk.
- 12:54Despite Metro Vancouver itself currently experiencing low risk, the situation might not
- 12:59remain stable.
- 13:00Christopher Lam warns that pollution levels in Metro Vancouver could spike in the coming days
- 13:05as smoke travels and settles in the area.
- 13:09The air quality situation is being closely monitored, with updates provided by the
- 13:13province's Air Quality Health Index map.
- 13:16This index shows the varying levels of health risk at different weather stations,
- 13:21highlighting the severe ratings in the eastern Fraser Valley, followed by the central Okanagan
- 13:26and the central Fraser Valley.
- 13:28As we continue to navigate these challenging conditions, it's crucial to stay informed and
- 13:34take necessary precautions to protect our health.
- 13:38As we wrap up today's episode of Morning Medical with Dr.
- 13:41Chow, let's remember the importance of staying informed about the health risks associated with
- 13:47wildfire smoke and poor air quality.
- 13:50Whether you're in British Columbia or elsewhere, taking steps to protect your
- 13:55respiratory health is vital.
- 13:57Thank you for joining us today, and we look forward to bringing you more health updates in
- 14:02our next episode.
- 14:04Stay safe and take care!
