- 0:27host. Pastor David. Welcome to the Voices of
- 0:32Life. I'm Pastor David. Did you know that King
- 0:36George III, often remembered as a villain of
- 0:39American Revolution, did not begin his reign
- 0:41with hostility toward the colonies? In fact,
- 0:45George III was the first Hanoverian king born
- 0:49in Britain, raised to speak English, and determined
- 0:53to be patriotic. He wanted to be a principled
- 0:57type of monarch. He ascended the throne at just
- 1:0222 years of age, eager to strengthen the empire
- 1:05he believed God had entrusted to him. But history
- 1:10took a sharp turn. After the Seven Years' War,
- 1:15Britain found itself drowning in debt. Nearly
- 1:19130 million pounds Parliament believed the colonies,
- 1:26protected for decades by British troops, should
- 1:29help shoulder the cost. To London, this was a
- 1:33simple fairness. To the colonies, it was a violation
- 1:37of their rights as Englishmen. And here is where
- 1:41the king's goodwill came into question. Did you
- 1:45know that King George III did not personally
- 1:48hate the colonists? Most historians agree he
- 1:51wasn't driven by cruelty. But as resistance grew,
- 1:56boycotts, protests, petitions, and finally open
- 1:59defiance, the king's patience thinned. By the
- 2:03mid -1770s, George III believed the colonies
- 2:07were rebelling against lawful authority. Parliament's
- 2:12supremacy could not be compromised. And yielding
- 2:16to colonial demands might fracture the entire
- 2:20empire. So he was looking... but the whole world
- 2:24and all the empires around the world, not just
- 2:26the 13 colonies. To him, this war was not about
- 2:29taxes. It was about constitutional order and
- 2:33preserving the unity of the global kingdom. But
- 2:36to the colonists, his refusal to listen felt
- 2:39like contempt. His approval of the Stamp Act,
- 2:43the Townshend Acts, and the Tea Act, and the
- 2:47Coercive Acts, looked like oppression. His silence
- 2:52toward their petition sounded like rejection.
- 2:55And so, in the minds of the people, the king's
- 2:59goodwill had vanished. Did you know that Thomas
- 3:03Jefferson aimed the Declaration of Independence
- 3:05directly at King George III? Not parliament,
- 3:10not ministry, but the king himself. Why, you
- 3:15may ask? Well, because a single figure could
- 3:19unite 13 colonies in a common cause. The Declaration
- 3:25listed 27 grievances, painting George III as
- 3:30a tyrant who refused necessary laws, obstructed
- 3:35justice, kept standing armies in peacetime, and
- 3:40imposed taxes without consent. Whether or not
- 3:44he intended malice, the colonists believed. He
- 3:49had abandoned goodwill and embraced coercion.
- 3:52Modern historians see King George III not as
- 3:56a monster, but as a monarch trapped in the machinery
- 4:00of imperial politics. He was defending what he
- 4:04believed was the God -ordained structure of the
- 4:07British Constitution. The colonists were defending
- 4:12what they believed were God -given rights of
- 4:15liberty. Two worlds collided, two convictions
- 4:20clashed, and a revolution was born. As John Adams
- 4:24later said, the American Revolution began in
- 4:28the minds and hearts of the people, long before
- 4:31the first shots at Lexington and Concord. So,
- 4:35did King George III lack good will toward the
- 4:39colonies? Perhaps not in his heart, but certainly
- 4:44in his actions. And actions, as scripture reminds
- 4:47us, reveal the truth of a man's stewardship.
- 4:51May we learn from this moment in history that
- 4:55leadership without listening becomes tyranny.
- 4:59That authority without humility becomes oppression.
- 5:03And that freedom once awakened becomes a force
- 5:08no earthly king can silence. Thank you for joining
- 5:13me on this Voices of Life Did You Know moment.
