- 0:05Speaker 1: Hi, I'm ritually filling in last minute for Scott Braun,
- 0:09Speaker 1: senior writer with the Athletic aircrafts Kevin Polar. Eric looks
- 0:13Speaker 1: like he's moving, but he swears he's not.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Eric.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I gotta know what the setup is? Did you like
- 0:19Speaker 1: just put that up on Ikea behind you? Like, what's
- 0:22Speaker 1: the what's.
- 0:23Speaker 2: The deal with? This is built in eighteen eighty six.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm in a house in Cape Charles that was built well,
- 0:31Speaker 2: well before you started covering the Orioles and before you
- 0:35Speaker 2: started covering. So yes, you guys can figure out, and honestly,
- 0:40Speaker 2: I will take I would take any kind of memes
- 0:42Speaker 2: and gifts that you can put in the shelves behind me,
- 0:45Speaker 2: maybe like some of the awards that I should have
- 0:48Speaker 2: earned when I was playing, Like anybody that hits two
- 0:50Speaker 2: oh nine should get some type of awards. But you
- 0:53Speaker 2: know what, it's guy's weekend, so it's time to go.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Like it, like it, good shot.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I think it's a bold strategy. If you leave empty shelves,
- 1:03Speaker 4: people will send you gifts. You know. I think it's smart.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I please please help me fill my shelves.
- 1:10Speaker 3: They might.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Kevin's immediately rocking that World Series hat today, I'm sure
- 1:14Speaker 1: that that was free.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I know.
- 1:16Speaker 4: I write the coattails. I write the coat tails. Yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 4: I never got there as a player, got there as
- 1:20Speaker 4: a you know, reporter of sports net. The hat was
- 1:25Speaker 4: not free, I'll be honest with your. Hat was not free.
- 1:26Speaker 4: I had to buy it. I had to buy it.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Wow, no discount, nothing you played there? How how is
- 1:32Speaker 3: that even possible? They can't hook it? But the hat, no,
- 1:36Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:36Speaker 4: I think I think one's on the way. I think
- 1:38Speaker 4: one's on the way. But I wasn't gonna like cross
- 1:40Speaker 4: over the line. The clubhouse attendants and you know, asked
- 1:44Speaker 4: moves for a hat. You know, he had bigger things
- 1:46Speaker 4: to worry about. So I just win the store. You know,
- 1:49Speaker 4: got in there a little early about a hat.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Nice like it. You get recognized, very much.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Very much. Yeah, still alive and well in Toronto.
- 1:58Speaker 3: There you go, there you go.
- 2:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, we got bigger things to get to
- 2:01Speaker 1: than Cratsy's background and Kevin Fullar buying his own Toronto
- 2:04Speaker 1: Blue Jays merchandise.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Let's charge the mound. Let's charge them about, all right, guys.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Big news today, A Rakis finally announced the head of
- 2:17Speaker 1: Baseball operations. But because it's the Rockies, they can't just
- 2:20Speaker 1: announce who was rumored to be finalists guys who are
- 2:25Speaker 1: in baseball, No, they go when they get Paul Depotesta.
- 2:28Speaker 1: If you have to like look that up, it's because
- 2:29Speaker 1: he hasn't been in baseball in a decade. If you're
- 2:33Speaker 1: just a casual fan, then you know the actor Jonah Hill. Well,
- 2:36Speaker 1: the movie Moneyball, Jonah Hill was modeled off of Deepost's character.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So this is a interesting move, guys. I don't know
- 2:44Speaker 1: how to really describe it. This is the guy who's
- 2:46Speaker 1: been out of baseball for ten years, who's been engaged,
- 2:49Speaker 1: as Ken Rosenthal and I wrote yesterday, I'll have Ken
- 2:52Speaker 1: on later on the show to get into the details.
- 2:53Speaker 1: He's been engaged with the Rockies for about a month,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but he wasn't on their immediate radio, wasn't a finalist.
- 3:00Speaker 1: We know they brought two guys, Amiel Sada Arizona, Matt Foreman,
- 3:03Speaker 1: Cleveland too. Denver showed them around. Talks with both of
- 3:07Speaker 1: those guys fell apart, mostly over personnel and how you
- 3:09Speaker 1: were going to be able to do the job. It
- 3:11Speaker 1: seems with Depodesta he's not quite as picky. He just
- 3:14Speaker 1: wants to get back into baseball. Is this a good
- 3:17Speaker 1: move kratzy for the Colorado Rockies?
- 3:20Speaker 2: If he is allowed the mean when you think about
- 3:25Speaker 2: Jonah Hill and Moneyball, he brought new ideas to an
- 3:29Speaker 2: organization and maybe even to baseball that weren't in there before.
- 3:33Speaker 2: If he's able to do that, if he's able to
- 3:36Speaker 2: do that with the Rockies, this is a massive move
- 3:39Speaker 2: for the Rockies. The issue with the Rockies the last
- 3:41Speaker 2: few years has been they're very insular. They're very much like, hey,
- 3:46Speaker 2: we're making a change. Everybody just carousels to the next
- 3:50Speaker 2: position in the organization. If they're going with somebody outside
- 3:55Speaker 2: of the organization, like Paul his experience in saying, you
- 4:00Speaker 2: know what, we need to kind of make a change.
- 4:03Speaker 2: The status quo has to change here, then it's it's
- 4:07Speaker 2: a move that will be huge for the Rockies because
- 4:10Speaker 2: talking to players that have played there, talking to players
- 4:12Speaker 2: who have had success there, not just players who were
- 4:15Speaker 2: there for like a year a half a year, players
- 4:18Speaker 2: who were All stars and successful players, they need a
- 4:21Speaker 2: change and they're behind on the times. So Paul de
- 4:24Speaker 2: Potesta might be an absolute gold mine for the Rockies.
- 4:31Speaker 4: It's definitely changed. But it's not like they went out
- 4:33Speaker 4: and got someone that was working within the New England
- 4:37Speaker 4: Patriots or Kansas City Chiefs. Look a look at the
- 4:41Speaker 4: record of the Cleveland Browns, like how much you know
- 4:43Speaker 4: he could have brought change there, but nothing really happened.
- 4:45Speaker 4: So I just think it's a very Rocky esque move
- 4:47Speaker 4: of maybe trying to think outside the box and trying
- 4:50Speaker 4: to get someone that you know, no one else thought of.
- 4:54Speaker 4: But I look at people's track record. You mentioned the
- 4:56Speaker 4: two guys that they were interviewing before. You know, both
- 4:59Speaker 4: teams have successful in you know, this century. You know,
- 5:02Speaker 4: I don't know why the Rockies would kind of go
- 5:05Speaker 4: against the grain and go get someone, especially in a
- 5:08Speaker 4: football organization like the Cleveland Browns who haven't had a
- 5:11Speaker 4: ton of success drafting guys. I mean, I think they
- 5:13Speaker 4: lead the NFL and quarterbacks you since I mean I
- 5:17Speaker 4: was alive. You know, they haven't had a winning record
- 5:19Speaker 4: in a long time. You've they've they've made some mistakes
- 5:22Speaker 4: on some signings. I mean where where it's like the
- 5:25Speaker 4: track record that you know, maybe Cratsy's kind of referring
- 5:29Speaker 4: to in towards of maybe being a good hire. I
- 5:31Speaker 4: don't see it.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I think the success track record is not there. Success
- 5:36Speaker 2: track record is definitely lacking. But the fact that you
- 5:41Speaker 2: look at somebody that says, hey, you know what, we
- 5:43Speaker 2: need to start looking at baseball in a different way.
- 5:46Speaker 2: The Rockies need to The Rockies need to get updated.
- 5:50Speaker 2: They're they're that friend of yours that still has the
- 5:53Speaker 2: iPhone six that's going, I'm not doing the update because
- 5:57Speaker 2: you know what, you know, somebody's nobody's gonna hack into
- 6:00Speaker 2: my phone and that's why I'm not doing the update.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And you're like, dog, like you can't even get my
- 6:05Speaker 2: text messages, like I need you to update. That's how
- 6:07Speaker 2: far behind the Rockies are. And I think if this
- 6:11Speaker 2: hiring does that, maybe this takes step one when the
- 6:15Speaker 2: rest of baseball is on step four, step five.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, fifty six, ninety nine and one.
- 6:23Speaker 1: By the way, it was the Browns record since January
- 6:25Speaker 1: twenty sixteen when de Podesta went there, as Kevin said,
- 6:29Speaker 1: like it's been a disaster, and most notably.
- 6:32Speaker 3: The Deshaun Watson trade.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I mean Browns fans were kind of rejoicing, which is
- 6:36Speaker 1: like never a good thing.
- 6:38Speaker 3: You're right, if he.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Had come from a winning place. I'm all for out
- 6:41Speaker 1: of the box. I love the Tony Vittello move. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: think if you're a winner, then it can translate. If
- 6:45Speaker 1: you bring certain things, it can translate. What exactly I'd
- 6:49Speaker 1: love to know is Pauldy with Essa bringing to the
- 6:52Speaker 1: Colorado Rockies and my bigger issue. And I got a
- 6:55Speaker 1: lot of text messages from executives again around the game
- 6:57Speaker 1: last night. That's a job that people want. That was
- 7:00Speaker 1: like a coveted job. I talked to multiple executives who
- 7:04Speaker 1: were in organizations, maybe not the top guy, but the
- 7:06Speaker 1: second or third guy who reached out to the Rockies
- 7:09Speaker 1: who were interested in that job. And they're in the
- 7:12Speaker 1: current landscape of baseball. They know what has happened over
- 7:14Speaker 1: the last ten years, Like do Steve Podessa know about
- 7:16Speaker 1: Trajax and some of the newer things that have been
- 7:19Speaker 1: going on? Like is it going to be better than
- 7:21Speaker 1: Bill Schmidt? Yes, the bar was so low. But if
- 7:24Speaker 1: you're really focus on making improvements, I guess you're really
- 7:28Speaker 1: looking at the rest of baseball and you're saying, there's
- 7:31Speaker 1: nobody here that can help us.
- 7:32Speaker 3: You know who we need?
- 7:33Speaker 1: The guy who's been running the Cleveland Browns into the
- 7:35Speaker 1: ground for the last decade. That's our guy, because he's
- 7:39Speaker 1: going to agree to keep all the people that we
- 7:40Speaker 1: want to keep and work under the conditions that we have,
- 7:43Speaker 1: And that, to me is troubling.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean a big part. I mean, Colorado as
- 7:50Speaker 4: it stands right now is not necessarily a free agent destination.
- 7:53Speaker 4: So a big part of what they have to do
- 7:55Speaker 4: is draft and develop. And if you just kind of
- 7:57Speaker 4: look at the Cleveland Browns track record of drafting and development,
- 8:00Speaker 4: especially you know, quarterbacks in first round picks, they haven't
- 8:04Speaker 4: had a lengthy track record of really nailing down the
- 8:08Speaker 4: right guy and drafting and developing guys. You think about
- 8:10Speaker 4: a guy like Baker Mayfield, he was you know, first
- 8:13Speaker 4: round pick, first overall pick, didn't pan out in Cleveland.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Now he's on his way to maybe winning an MVP. So,
- 8:20Speaker 4: like you said, I'm for you know, thinking outside the
- 8:22Speaker 4: box too, but I think you've got to have some
- 8:24Speaker 4: sort of a track record of success in order for
- 8:27Speaker 4: it to carry over from league to league.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah, do you guys think like this changes anything for
- 8:38Speaker 1: players or they have to start winning in Colorado right
- 8:40Speaker 1: for it to become a place where people are not
- 8:43Speaker 1: going to want to go almost unless you do a
- 8:45Speaker 1: massive overpaying and we've seen how that has gone terribly
- 8:48Speaker 1: as well. Like right, you're chicking your head grass, You're like, no, right,
- 8:51Speaker 1: this is a case where like this is going to
- 8:54Speaker 1: be the situation for I don't know Paul de Potesta
- 8:57Speaker 1: when he finally meets with the media, Like, what does
- 8:59Speaker 1: he sell them on?
- 9:00Speaker 3: Is it a five year plan? Like are they far?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Aphind that it's like a seven fle year plan?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Eight year?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Like how far are we talking here? And you know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: how much leeway do we give him? Because I could
- 9:10Speaker 1: come in, You could come in, Kevin can come in
- 9:13Speaker 1: and fix things they're that far behind and make real changes.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I know executives have been salivating over it, partly because
- 9:19Speaker 1: you could have such an advantage if you figure out
- 9:21Speaker 1: how to make that altitude at course field work to
- 9:24Speaker 1: your advantage. There's thirty thousand fans there every night because
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's a beautiful stadium, you know, in the heart of
- 9:29Speaker 1: the city, in like a really cool area. So I mean,
- 9:32Speaker 1: if you're Pauiti Potessa, like how are you selling the
- 9:35Speaker 1: Rockies on this? And how are you selling any kind
- 9:38Speaker 1: of free agents ever? To come here and that things
- 9:40Speaker 1: are different.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I don't think that. I don't think that's I don't
- 9:43Speaker 2: think that's where the Rockies are right now. I don't
- 9:45Speaker 2: think they're sitting there going in the next three years,
- 9:47Speaker 2: we're going to start making us making ourselves a destination.
- 9:52Speaker 2: They're going to need to do exactly what KP said.
- 9:56Speaker 2: They have to draft. They have to create a a
- 10:00Speaker 2: minor league organization that says, we have to do these
- 10:05Speaker 2: types of things. We have to find these types of players,
- 10:09Speaker 2: similar to what the Royals did for years, have done
- 10:11Speaker 2: for years. They need outfielders that go get it, they
- 10:15Speaker 2: need guys that put the ball in play. Why because
- 10:18Speaker 2: their big league park is way different than every other
- 10:21Speaker 2: big league park. And you either say, oh, we're at
- 10:25Speaker 2: such a disadvantage in Colorado, or when I'm talking about
- 10:28Speaker 2: the Royals, we're at such a disadvantage. It's such a
- 10:31Speaker 2: massive park, so many hits fall in Colorado. Because that's
- 10:34Speaker 2: what we're talking about. You have to figure out how
- 10:37Speaker 2: do you build your team to make Colorado an advantage.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And I feel like this regime, this insular organization, like
- 10:47Speaker 2: I've mentioned before, has just said, oh, man, like we're
- 10:51Speaker 2: such a disadvantage. Our players don't they don't recover. You know,
- 10:56Speaker 2: it's so tough to pitch here. It's even tough for
- 10:59Speaker 2: him because when we go on the road, no, make
- 11:02Speaker 2: that eighty one games that you have at home your advantage.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And if you're Paul Deepotesto, you have to change that
- 11:10Speaker 2: organizational philosophy. And I think that happens in the first
- 11:15Speaker 2: three years. Then you start to develop and see what
- 11:18Speaker 2: type of team you have because you have athletic dudes
- 11:21Speaker 2: that can run the outfield, you have a deep roster
- 11:24Speaker 2: that has twenty six guys who can play because of recovery.
- 11:28Speaker 2: And every GM says, oh, this is a five year deal.
- 11:32Speaker 2: That's just the trash GM. New GM talk like, oh,
- 11:37Speaker 2: we need five years for this. The Rockies actually need
- 11:40Speaker 2: five years. They might actually need seven. I'm not sure.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Yeah. From an inner workings perspective, since I played there,
- 11:50Speaker 4: they're not that far behind in terms of facilities that
- 11:54Speaker 4: they have. The clubhouse is great, the food is great,
- 11:57Speaker 4: you know, weight room and all that stuff is great.
- 11:59Speaker 4: So at least they're up to par with that. Where
- 12:03Speaker 4: was that going. Oh, I think the most important thing
- 12:06Speaker 4: that he can do is and I don't know who's
- 12:09Speaker 4: rumored to be taking the manager job there, But that's
- 12:12Speaker 4: the conversation that I'm looking forward to hearing. Who's going
- 12:15Speaker 4: to take that job, who's willing to kind of step in.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Like Cratsey said, this might be a five or seven
- 12:20Speaker 4: year plan. But me as a former player in Cratzy,
- 12:23Speaker 4: you could probably attest to this too. You're not necessarily
- 12:26Speaker 4: running to organizations to sign there because of who's in
- 12:28Speaker 4: their front office. It's usually, you know, a lot of
- 12:32Speaker 4: factors a thing, but the right manager is a huge
- 12:35Speaker 4: part of that.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that'll be fascinating to see what they do. And
- 12:39Speaker 1: if this managerial cycle is any indication, it'll be somebody
- 12:43Speaker 1: that nobody predicts, that nobody even sees coming.
- 12:46Speaker 4: But is there any football coaches out there looking for jobs?
- 12:51Speaker 4: You know, we're an NBA coach that feels like they
- 12:53Speaker 4: can just step in, Yeah, yeah, a hockey coach why not? Yeah?
- 12:58Speaker 4: You know, is there like someone a hockey coach said
- 13:00Speaker 4: just has been kind of looking for a job. And
- 13:02Speaker 4: maybe maybe Crassy, maybe you just need to get the
- 13:04Speaker 4: right phone numbers in your hand, because apparently you could
- 13:06Speaker 4: just reach out and put your name in the hat
- 13:09Speaker 4: for these sort of jobs these days. So make a
- 13:12Speaker 4: phone call.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I'm putting my phone on do not disturb. I don't
- 13:15Speaker 2: want that phone call.
- 13:17Speaker 3: The raise decline.
- 13:17Speaker 1: They're twelve eleven trying to give Peter Fairbanks more money.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Eleven million dollar option on Peter Fairbanks. He's now a
- 13:23Speaker 1: free agent, per multiple reports.
- 13:26Speaker 3: This is a little unusual, guys.
- 13:27Speaker 1: They could have just done what Tampa Bay usually does,
- 13:30Speaker 1: which just trade them, right, They could just pick it
- 13:31Speaker 1: up and tried to flip them.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Are you guys surprised by this?
- 13:36Speaker 4: I'm always hesitant when the Rays don't pick up a
- 13:38Speaker 4: picture's option or trade them. I like Peter Fairbanks. I
- 13:42Speaker 4: think he's very funny. I think he's a great picture.
- 13:44Speaker 4: I think he's going to find a home somewhere and
- 13:47Speaker 4: be very effective. But the Rays always have me skeptical
- 13:50Speaker 4: when they don't do what they normally do.
- 13:55Speaker 1: You're right, it's like, don't trade but thera, yeah, don't
- 13:58Speaker 1: trade with the Rays.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I agree with that. But he cost money, and there's
- 14:02Speaker 2: there's a few things that the Rays are allergic to,
- 14:04Speaker 2: World Series Championships and money. They do not want to
- 14:09Speaker 2: pay money. I think this is great for Pete obviously,
- 14:12Speaker 2: people are gonna say, oh, you're a player all this stuff, Like,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I'm not afraid of the peripherals that I think the
- 14:19Speaker 2: Rays are looking at. That there was some there was
- 14:21Speaker 2: some backtick in some things. And maybe it's because he's
- 14:26Speaker 2: on the show and he's, you know, great at what
- 14:29Speaker 2: he does to me as a closer in the American
- 14:32Speaker 2: League East that now becomes a free agent a year early.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I love this for him. I love I love the
- 14:39Speaker 2: fact that for him they did not pick up his
- 14:41Speaker 2: eleven million dollar option. And maybe the Rays can't spend
- 14:44Speaker 2: eleven million on a closer. There's some teams out there
- 14:48Speaker 2: that are going to spend eleven million on a closer.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And I think, you know, I think he could be
- 14:52Speaker 2: in line at least a two for twenty possibly a
- 14:58Speaker 2: three for twenty eight issue. Like, I think there's there's
- 15:01Speaker 2: some cash out there for him because he's done it
- 15:04Speaker 2: in the toughest division.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah, he gets a.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Million dollar buyout, So that million that I improvise guys, he's
- 15:11Speaker 1: actually getting. So it's still going to be a good
- 15:13Speaker 1: time in the Fairbanks house. I agree with you. I
- 15:15Speaker 1: think he's going to get a two or three year deal.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I think the market for him if he's healthy, and
- 15:19Speaker 1: Kevin's right, I kind of raises some alarm bells, but
- 15:21Speaker 1: you know, teams go through so many processes for medicals,
- 15:24Speaker 1: so if he's healthy, I think he's going to be
- 15:26Speaker 1: somebody that's in demand. He's been very successful, a huge
- 15:29Speaker 1: part of the race success over the last couple of years.
- 15:32Speaker 1: You know, it feels like they're moving on from a
- 15:34Speaker 1: guy who was part of that identity.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They cycle through so many guys, but there there always
- 15:39Speaker 1: seems to be like one or two guys who have
- 15:40Speaker 1: kind of made it through like two or three years
- 15:43Speaker 1: of these purges, and Fairbanks has been one of those guys.
- 15:46Speaker 3: So best of luck to him.
- 15:47Speaker 1: He joins what is going to be a pretty robust
- 15:50Speaker 1: pitching market here in free agency. I think it's a
- 15:53Speaker 1: better market than we've seen in the last couple of years.
- 15:58Speaker 3: All Right asked.
- 15:59Speaker 1: About starting ross Akins, so the free agent class looks
- 16:02Speaker 1: quote a little bit better than usual, and he said
- 16:04Speaker 1: the Blue Jays have already begun some trade talks about
- 16:08Speaker 1: starting pitching. That's pretty encouraging. Now, you guys think if
- 16:11Speaker 1: you're the Toronto Blue Jays, it feels like they really
- 16:13Speaker 1: teams say this all the time, but they want to
- 16:15Speaker 1: capitalize on their run and then we don't see it happen.
- 16:18Speaker 1: It feels like in KP you probably have more of
- 16:20Speaker 1: an indication being so closely involved with them that they
- 16:23Speaker 1: are very committed to building off of this and to
- 16:26Speaker 1: continue to put those resources forward to make Toronto a
- 16:29Speaker 1: perennial powerhouse.
- 16:31Speaker 4: What do you think? Yeah, I believe they're going to
- 16:33Speaker 4: ride the momentum of their success this year. Obviously it
- 16:37Speaker 4: started a couple years ago with the stadium renovations. It's
- 16:40Speaker 4: such a great place for you know, not only you
- 16:42Speaker 4: know singles or families, you know, anyone to come to
- 16:46Speaker 4: a ballpark. It's a great place to come. It's location,
- 16:48Speaker 4: Downtown's beautiful. What they've done with the stadium is unbelievable.
- 16:52Speaker 4: I think Shane Bieber also opting into his deal shows
- 16:56Speaker 4: how there was a lot of talk about how that
- 16:59Speaker 4: team can chemistry was the best that anyone had ever seen.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Everyone loved everyone. For Bieber to come there get traded there,
- 17:07Speaker 4: only really spend two months there. Pitch good enough and
- 17:10Speaker 4: a lot of people's opinion to be able to go
- 17:12Speaker 4: out and test the free agent market get a longer
- 17:15Speaker 4: term deal more money really shows what they had there
- 17:18Speaker 4: was really special that people want to be there, and
- 17:22Speaker 4: I think Bieber is maybe showing a lot of other
- 17:27Speaker 4: players like Toronto is a destination where a lot of
- 17:29Speaker 4: players want to play, and I think, you know, Ross
- 17:31Speaker 4: and Mark coming out and saying what they said and
- 17:34Speaker 4: really trying to strike when the iron's hot and make
- 17:36Speaker 4: trades or go out and try to sign free agents
- 17:38Speaker 4: right away, because the foundation is really the core of guys,
- 17:41Speaker 4: and the foundation, starting with Lottie is there and not
- 17:45Speaker 4: everyone's window always opens entirely. I feel like the window
- 17:48Speaker 4: for them is open, and I think they're going to
- 17:50Speaker 4: do whatever they take, and I think they have support
- 17:53Speaker 4: from ownership.
- 17:55Speaker 2: When you're making decisions for your team in the future,
- 17:57Speaker 2: you can't go recency bias. You can't be like, oh, oh, oh,
- 18:00Speaker 2: we made the World Series, so we must be a
- 18:02Speaker 2: really good team. You have to go with like, what
- 18:05Speaker 2: have they done consistently? They have done even when they
- 18:09Speaker 2: were bad. They went out and got the best pitching,
- 18:13Speaker 2: They solidified their defense. I think they took a step
- 18:15Speaker 2: back because they got rid of a guy like Matt
- 18:18Speaker 2: Chapman who was anchoring third base. Then they were like,
- 18:21Speaker 2: you know what, we are really good at defense? Doan
- 18:24Speaker 2: varshow is going to be healthy? We went out and
- 18:25Speaker 2: got Andre Samenez. So you have two Platinum Glove winners.
- 18:29Speaker 2: So if you're a starting pitcher, all that you see
- 18:31Speaker 2: from Bieber, all that you see from the postseason, you're like,
- 18:35Speaker 2: this organization likes pitching, and I want to be there.
- 18:39Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to Ft and Kratzy. This might
- 18:42Speaker 1: be what you were thinking of with the qualifying offer,
- 18:44Speaker 1: But Lucas Giolito his situation in Boston with the qualifying offer,
- 18:50Speaker 1: there were you guys surprised at all about the news
- 18:53Speaker 1: that he did not receive the qualifying offers. So maybe
- 18:55Speaker 1: you weren't thinking, yes, is I think what you were
- 18:57Speaker 1: thinking about with Grisham, this was a little bit of
- 18:59Speaker 1: a prize. I think he didn't get the offer, which
- 19:02Speaker 1: means the he's a free agent. Without that qualifying offer,
- 19:04Speaker 1: they don't get a draft pick obviously if he signs
- 19:06Speaker 1: with another team. I was a little surprised by this
- 19:09Speaker 1: because I think people always want pitching and you always
- 19:12Speaker 1: kind of stand the I feel like they would have
- 19:14Speaker 1: probably gotten the draft pick. He would have probably gotten
- 19:17Speaker 1: a longer term deal somewhere else. What do you guys
- 19:19Speaker 1: think about this?
- 19:22Speaker 2: I think I think he could have. I think it
- 19:24Speaker 2: would have been kind of a Paveta Ironically, Paveta was
- 19:28Speaker 2: with the Red Sox right before he signed with the Padres,
- 19:31Speaker 2: and the Padres deal that he signed was kind of
- 19:34Speaker 2: very backloaded, So I think it was a unique type
- 19:38Speaker 2: of deal that he signed. And I think maybe the
- 19:41Speaker 2: way that Giolito ended and kind of his ups and
- 19:45Speaker 2: downs inconsistencies showed them, you know what, We're not going
- 19:50Speaker 2: to give him a qualifying offer. We're not, even though
- 19:52Speaker 2: he's not even thirty two years old yet, We're not
- 19:55Speaker 2: going to give him that offer because I don't know
- 19:56Speaker 2: that it's going to pay out. And I think ultimately,
- 20:00Speaker 2: when you give somebody a qualifying offer. We just talked
- 20:02Speaker 2: about it with Big WU. Do you want him back?
- 20:06Speaker 2: Are the Red Sox like we will pay this guy?
- 20:09Speaker 2: Because ultimately that's the decision you have to make. Are
- 20:12Speaker 2: you willing to make this move and pay him the
- 20:15Speaker 2: I have to figure out exactly what it is. I
- 20:17Speaker 2: think it's twenty one point seven million is the qualifying offer?
- 20:21Speaker 2: Essentially twenty two million dollars are you willing to do that?
- 20:23Speaker 2: And I don't know that the Red Sox we're willing
- 20:25Speaker 2: to do that.
- 20:26Speaker 4: I think to answer your previous question to Ken, maybe
- 20:29Speaker 4: that one year deal of twenty two point one million
- 20:32Speaker 4: dollars is too much for the Red Sox. But let's
- 20:35Speaker 4: hope for dialdo's sake, you know, And that was a
- 20:38Speaker 4: question I probably should ask Ken too. Is because a
- 20:41Speaker 4: guy doesn't receive a qualifying offer, does it diminish kind
- 20:45Speaker 4: of his value in you know, he's probably worth less
- 20:48Speaker 4: than what the qualifying offer is, you know, over multiple years.
- 20:51Speaker 4: But let's hope in the case of Giolito, the fact
- 20:54Speaker 4: that he doesn't have the qualifying offer attached to his name,
- 20:57Speaker 4: it could be a beneficial to him and his family.
- 20:59Speaker 4: You know, Teams are very hesitant to sign players unless
- 21:03Speaker 4: they really really are going to move the needle because
- 21:05Speaker 4: they value those picks so much. So in his case,
- 21:08Speaker 4: hopefully it's a good thing. Hopefully he lands with the
- 21:10Speaker 4: multi year deal and it's probably a lot easier without
- 21:13Speaker 4: the qualifying offer over your head.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. In the days and age of people
- 21:19Speaker 1: like Prospect hugging, it does hurt guy's markets. And we've
- 21:22Speaker 1: seen that in the past, we've seen guys who have
- 21:24Speaker 1: that qualifying offer attached have to take a lesser deal
- 21:27Speaker 1: and kind of really changes the scope of their free agency,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and it's something that they can't control it all. So
- 21:34Speaker 1: you guys both played. I mean, as a player, how
- 21:37Speaker 1: frustrating would that be because so much of what the
- 21:40Speaker 1: team decides on this qualifying offer can at times dictate
- 21:43Speaker 1: what you are able to get in the winter.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I wasn't fortunate enough to really put
- 21:49Speaker 4: myself in a position to have a qualifying offer, but
- 21:51Speaker 4: I would be extremely frustrated because in no sport is
- 21:54Speaker 4: it harder to reach free agency. And then in some ways,
- 21:57Speaker 4: when you actually do get there as a here for agent,
- 22:01Speaker 4: you're not entirely free because, like you said, there's a
- 22:04Speaker 4: lot of organizations that value draft picks and prospects, and
- 22:08Speaker 4: you know, maybe you're not entirely you know, bidding against
- 22:12Speaker 4: every team, because there's some teams right off the top
- 22:14Speaker 4: that say, nope, you have a qualifying offer, We're not
- 22:16Speaker 4: going to offer you a deal.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I obviously never made the qualifying offer even discussion, but
- 22:23Speaker 2: I think anytime you take away from a player's value,
- 22:26Speaker 2: and when I say a player's value. You're not taking
- 22:28Speaker 2: away from Juan Soto's value, You're not taking away from
- 22:32Speaker 2: the elite players in baseball, but you're taking away the
- 22:35Speaker 2: value from that like what I would say the upper
- 22:39Speaker 2: middle class of Major League Baseball. Then the owners win.
- 22:43Speaker 2: The owners win because there's more of those guys than
- 22:47Speaker 2: there are of superstars, and the superstars are always going
- 22:50Speaker 2: to get paid. And I think the owners win anytime
- 22:53Speaker 2: you can hold down the majority salary than the minorities.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Right, and there was thirteen players if you're not familiar
- 23:04Speaker 1: who received that qualifying offer per Reports, that list is
- 23:08Speaker 1: right up there. Bobashett Dylan ce, Edwin Hazda, Gallin, Trent Grisham,
- 23:13Speaker 1: Shota Shota, Imanaga, Michael King, Kyle Schwarber, Ranger, Sworrez, Glabor Torres,
- 23:19Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker, Friend, Raveldez, and Brandrew Woodroff, who we discussed
- 23:23Speaker 1: earlier as well. So if they do sign with another team,
- 23:26Speaker 1: their original team will get a compensatory draft pick. This
- 23:30Speaker 1: is also something guys that you know, we're talking about
- 23:32Speaker 1: the big salary cap and the looming issues, but this
- 23:34Speaker 1: is something in every CBA there could be changes like
- 23:37Speaker 1: this is something that the players could say, hey, this
- 23:39Speaker 1: isn't fair when you change the way this is structured
- 23:42Speaker 1: as well, So this could maybe be one of the
- 23:45Speaker 1: last times we see something like this.
- 23:46Speaker 4: You know, I don't know.
- 23:47Speaker 1: It's it's really kind of a weird part of the process,
- 23:50Speaker 1: and no other sport quite does it this way right
- 23:52Speaker 1: where it's like, hey, we have to pick between giving
- 23:55Speaker 1: you this offer, but then we give up a draft
- 23:57Speaker 1: pick and drafts are really important now ten fifteen years ago,
- 24:01Speaker 1: where gms were like not prospect hugging. So I wonder
- 24:04Speaker 1: if this is something a small thing, you know, way
- 24:07Speaker 1: down the list that players are like, can we can
- 24:09Speaker 1: we fix the system here a little bit? Because no,
- 24:12Speaker 1: maybe we should just go if like why do teams
- 24:16Speaker 1: need to get compensation at all?
- 24:19Speaker 3: Right?
- 24:19Speaker 1: Like, am I wrong here?
- 24:20Speaker 2: Do you?
- 24:20Speaker 3: Guys?
- 24:21Speaker 2: Like?
- 24:21Speaker 3: No, the weirdest process.
- 24:24Speaker 4: It is a very weird process, and I don't fully
- 24:26Speaker 4: understand it. You know, this is where I'd like defer
- 24:29Speaker 4: to a Trevor May because he's so he knows all
- 24:32Speaker 4: this stuff so well. I mean, I live through this,
- 24:34Speaker 4: but like, there's been so many changes that I can't Obviously,
- 24:39Speaker 4: in negotiations, you're giving up something to give something. This
- 24:42Speaker 4: was one of those things that was given up. But
- 24:44Speaker 4: it just feels weird to me. I'm thinking about like
- 24:47Speaker 4: Boba Shitt. You know, guy drafted and developed by the
- 24:49Speaker 4: Toronto Blue Jays, does his six years and then you
- 24:53Speaker 4: put a qualifying offer on him. Is it like a
- 24:55Speaker 4: way of letting the fans know, like, hey, we still care,
- 24:59Speaker 4: but if you go, at least we get a draft pick.
- 25:01Speaker 4: It's really weird to me. And as a player, if
- 25:04Speaker 4: I was in that position, I would be a little
- 25:06Speaker 4: bit frustrated because, like I said, I don't a lot
- 25:09Speaker 4: of teams don't view you as entirely free when you
- 25:12Speaker 4: have this kind of thing weighing over your head, and
- 25:16Speaker 4: teams love draft picks and prospects so much. You know,
- 25:20Speaker 4: even if it takes away from one team that's willing
- 25:22Speaker 4: to negotiate from you, you work so damn hard to
- 25:24Speaker 4: become a free agent in baseball. I just don't think
- 25:27Speaker 4: it's right.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I think it's a big miss by the PA, by
- 25:31Speaker 2: the Players Association for not seeing the future of how
- 25:35Speaker 2: this will be used by the owners by the front offices,
- 25:40Speaker 2: because that is you essentially have one opportunity to go
- 25:44Speaker 2: to free agency as a player, if if the big if,
- 25:49Speaker 2: if you make it to six years, you become a
- 25:51Speaker 2: big league free agent, and that is tough to do.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And for that to even be squashed more it's almost
- 25:58Speaker 2: like they're saying, Okay, you know, yes, you made it
- 26:02Speaker 2: the free agency, but it's like another year that you have.
- 26:07Speaker 2: But you know, and when you're talking about negotiations, you
- 26:12Speaker 2: have to be cognizant of the fact that owners and
- 26:16Speaker 2: gms and front offices will always be there. Players get
- 26:21Speaker 2: one career and it is quick. It goes by super fast.
- 26:24Speaker 2: KP knows it. He was just playing this year and
- 26:27Speaker 2: now it's over. So anytime you give up anything like that,
- 26:31Speaker 2: you're really squashing your opportunity to earn the most that
- 26:35Speaker 2: you can in a sport that is tough, tough, tough
- 26:38Speaker 2: to play.
- 26:39Speaker 4: It's tough to earn too, really tough to earn in
- 26:42Speaker 4: the spot because I mean, you're you already your salary
- 26:47Speaker 4: set for your first three years, and then you go
- 26:49Speaker 4: through an arbitration process, which has its inefficiencies as well too,
- 26:53Speaker 4: and then you finally get out of that arbitration process
- 26:55Speaker 4: and you finally want to be free and you're not
- 26:57Speaker 4: entirely free. I think it's it's a miss. Hopefully it's
- 27:02Speaker 4: something that it's not just me as a former player
- 27:05Speaker 4: in Cratsey. Hopefully the current players right now kind of
- 27:07Speaker 4: see this as something where is it worth a lockout over? No,
- 27:11Speaker 4: but it's worth having a discussion over, like maybe fully
- 27:15Speaker 4: understanding what was kind of given up for this, you know,
- 27:18Speaker 4: maybe talking to people within the union like why did
- 27:21Speaker 4: we kind of come up or why did we agree
- 27:23Speaker 4: with this qualifying offer? And I know a lot of
- 27:26Speaker 4: it probably has to do with smaller market teams, you know, drafting,
- 27:30Speaker 4: developing guys and then really never having a chance of
- 27:33Speaker 4: re signing a guy, which in theory every team has
- 27:36Speaker 4: a chance to sign whoever the heck they want. Smaller
- 27:39Speaker 4: market teams don't choose to sign players. It's their kind
- 27:42Speaker 4: of reward of, Hey, you did a good job developing
- 27:45Speaker 4: this guy and you know, holding on to him for
- 27:47Speaker 4: six years, But as he walks out the door, we're
- 27:49Speaker 4: going to give you a little gift a draft pick.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. I agree. You heard it here first on
- 27:56Speaker 3: FT News.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Here the Dodgers designated for assignment start Tony Gonsolin and
- 28:01Speaker 1: add outfielder Ryan Ward and left handed pitcher Robinson Ortiz
- 28:05Speaker 1: to their forty man roster. They also outrighted Justin Dean
- 28:09Speaker 1: and Michael Grove. This is obviously a lot of housekeeping
- 28:12Speaker 1: this time of year. But Tony Gonsolin, because he was
- 28:15Speaker 1: part of that World championship team, because he's been a
- 28:18Speaker 1: part of that team for a while, kind of jumped
- 28:20Speaker 1: out to me, guys like it's probably the end of
- 28:22Speaker 1: the road for him with the Dodgers here. But great
- 28:25Speaker 1: career in LA, great job in LA. I don't think
- 28:28Speaker 1: there's a whole lot, you know, you can say if
- 28:30Speaker 1: you're Tony Gonsolin about his time there, But clearly this
- 28:33Speaker 1: is the Dodgers making space to ad payroll to ad
- 28:35Speaker 1: players ahead of the free agency bonanza that we're going
- 28:39Speaker 1: to see.
- 28:39Speaker 4: I would be in line if I was a Major
- 28:41Speaker 4: league GM of wanting that guy to be on my
- 28:44Speaker 4: roster when healthy. He is as good as it gets.
- 28:46Speaker 4: I mean, is he quite a one, No, But he's
- 28:48Speaker 4: a really solid addition. Up until his recent histories, he's
- 28:53Speaker 4: been a guy who's been able to take the ball,
- 28:55Speaker 4: and I think he's got really really good stuff. So
- 28:57Speaker 4: if I'm a GM out there right now, He's a
- 28:59Speaker 4: guy that I'm on the phone with right now seeing
- 29:01Speaker 4: whatever it takes to get a deal done, because I
- 29:03Speaker 4: think he can help a lot of teams.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Some of these some of these options, some of these
- 29:07Speaker 2: DFAs and that kind of stuff really work out for
- 29:10Speaker 2: the player because where's the where are you going to
- 29:13Speaker 2: slot in with the team that you're at, And even
- 29:16Speaker 2: if you know, maybe you get traded, you're still on
- 29:19Speaker 2: your current contract. Now, these guys, normally, most of these guys,
- 29:24Speaker 2: like when we talked about Pete Fairbanks, you have an
- 29:27Speaker 2: opportunity to get a little bit more of a lucrative
- 29:30Speaker 2: longer term, maybe more guaranteed money, and it just adds
- 29:35Speaker 2: a little a layer of security for your family.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. I think this starting put your market
- 29:43Speaker 1: on the on the free agent side is going to
- 29:46Speaker 1: be fascinating. There's some like real upgrades out there. Obviously,
- 29:48Speaker 1: if Tek's Google gets traded, that's going to create a
- 29:51Speaker 1: domino effect. But you look at just who's available, not
- 29:53Speaker 1: including like potential trades here and there are some really
- 29:57Speaker 1: interesting names and I think that there's obviously, like the
- 30:00Speaker 1: always is a lot of teams after it, but some
- 30:02Speaker 1: big market teams like the Mets.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Really, you know, we're going to.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Flex their muscle here because they have to add in
- 30:07Speaker 1: my mind, two starters, you know, at least two top
- 30:11Speaker 1: end starters, and then go down with the young guys
- 30:13Speaker 1: as their depth. And so when teams like that are
- 30:16Speaker 1: going to be that aggressive, I think it's only good
- 30:18Speaker 1: for the guys that are out there that are available.
- 30:19Speaker 1: There's going to be a lot of big fish chasing
- 30:22Speaker 1: these guys.
- 30:23Speaker 5: Guardians left fielder Stephen Kwan, who is controlled through twenty
- 30:27Speaker 5: twenty seven. Now you talk about it, you watch the
- 30:30Speaker 5: Blue Jays playing in the World Series ago, they put
- 30:32Speaker 5: the ball in play, they didn't strike out man. That
- 30:34Speaker 5: is Stephen Kwan to a t. But you look at
- 30:37Speaker 5: his last year he was like a below average offensive performer.
- 30:41Speaker 5: He really fell off from twenty twenty four, and you
- 30:43Speaker 5: look at his first four years of his career is
- 30:45Speaker 5: really really good blow lea garbage, really really good blowly gabage.
- 30:50Speaker 5: So I guess, like you said, Jimmer's risk with every player,
- 30:54Speaker 5: but Stephen Kwan, he would certainly give you more contact.
- 30:58Speaker 2: He's a great defender.
- 31:02Speaker 6: He they were on him in this summer, The Phillies
- 31:07Speaker 6: were on him, and I heard the Guardians almost said
- 31:13Speaker 6: the Indians would not get off the name Aiden Miller.
- 31:16Speaker 6: So if they're still on that on that name, he
- 31:19Speaker 6: probably not going to get him, but it is I
- 31:22Speaker 6: do look at you know, he doesn't strike out, and
- 31:25Speaker 6: that would be very appealing in this lineup to add
- 31:27Speaker 6: a bat that doesn't strike out.
- 31:30Speaker 2: But he also doesn't really slug.
- 31:31Speaker 6: And you can say what you want about the the
- 31:35Speaker 6: Blue Jays putting the ball play, and I agree they
- 31:38Speaker 6: led to majors and hitting. They put the ball play.
- 31:40Speaker 6: They don't strike out a lot, and that's great. Every
- 31:42Speaker 6: game they won in the postseason they hit a home run,
- 31:44Speaker 6: you know, so I would like to have a little
- 31:46Speaker 6: bit of slug as well. I'm concerned that he was
- 31:49Speaker 6: below below league average across the kind of across the
- 31:53Speaker 6: board offensively last year, but you know, there's a lot
- 31:56Speaker 6: to like there. I'm sure Cleveland's gonna have a very
- 32:00Speaker 6: high price on him.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like Stephen Kwan is a guy who
- 32:06Speaker 1: also like every time you watch a Cleveland game, he
- 32:10Speaker 1: impacts the game like he even if he doesn't have
- 32:13Speaker 1: any hits, he impacts the game. I feel like he
- 32:15Speaker 1: brings a lot of the intangibles on a lot of
- 32:16Speaker 1: the stuff that Craig was talking about about the Cleveland
- 32:18Speaker 1: way of playing. To me, Stephen Kwan kind of embodies that.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Yeah, he impacted the All Star Game. He pushed the
- 32:29Speaker 2: All Star Game into extra home run swings. I don't
- 32:33Speaker 2: know how you say that, but like he's gonna always
- 32:36Speaker 2: put up a good at bat. Are you okay? To me?
- 32:39Speaker 2: I think Stephen Kwan is a piece to the puzzle.
- 32:43Speaker 2: And the Phillies already have enough slug. Yes, Trey Turner
- 32:46Speaker 2: doesn't slug as much as the other guys, but the
- 32:50Speaker 2: Phillies were low on slug this past season. Before that
- 32:55Speaker 2: they were okay. So they they diminished their strikeout rate
- 32:59Speaker 2: last year, and to me, it's like, how far do
- 33:02Speaker 2: you go? Stephen Kwan is is a plus ad to
- 33:05Speaker 2: any team he gets out of.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Oh who wrote this.
- 33:13Speaker 1: The best player of his generation? Fade away? I did
- 33:16Speaker 1: not know we were discussing. This is my column from
- 33:19Speaker 1: earlier in the week.
- 33:20Speaker 3: About something that's been bothering me.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Guys like and I talked to Derek Peter and Calrican Jr.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And like other like all time grades about this, Like,
- 33:28Speaker 1: does your perspective of Mike Trout change knowing that he
- 33:33Speaker 1: has not won a playoff game, and that essen stands
- 33:35Speaker 1: right now. He even if he got there, wouldn't be
- 33:37Speaker 1: that Mike Trout again. So he had that ten years
- 33:39Speaker 1: of dominance and kind of feels like he's faded away
- 33:43Speaker 1: in the saddest way for baseball. So I want to
- 33:45Speaker 1: know for you guys, to.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Tell me how you feel, how you really feel.
- 33:50Speaker 3: I feel sad.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I feel sad because I feel like, like my mom
- 33:53Speaker 1: was a big baseball fan. The other day was like,
- 33:55Speaker 1: Mike Trout is so overrated, and I feel like people
- 33:57Speaker 1: say that a lot who just don't understand how good
- 34:00Speaker 1: he was for ten years and how much nobody knew
- 34:02Speaker 1: he was good for ten years. That's the problem. Now
- 34:05Speaker 1: baseball's at an all time high end viewership. We've got all
- 34:07Speaker 1: these stars, it's never been easier to make the playoffs,
- 34:10Speaker 1: and we've got Mike Trout doing nothing but testifying in
- 34:12Speaker 1: a wrongful debt Tyler skag suit with the Angels. It's
- 34:15Speaker 1: the only time you'll see him in October. I think
- 34:17Speaker 1: it's just a really sad story for baseball.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Around free Mike Trout. I think it's time he doesn't
- 34:23Speaker 4: want to be free. I think I think loyalty is
- 34:26Speaker 4: like a great quality to have. I'd like to think
- 34:29Speaker 4: I'm a very loyal person. It's probably my tragic flaw
- 34:32Speaker 4: is when you're in with me, you're in with me,
- 34:34Speaker 4: and like, I'm never breaking free from that. And Mike
- 34:37Speaker 4: has obviously proven that he's very loyal to the Angels.
- 34:40Speaker 4: But what have the Angels ever really done for him?
- 34:43Speaker 4: You know, they haven't really built a team around him.
- 34:45Speaker 4: I know they had Otani for a short amount of time,
- 34:47Speaker 4: but they haven't really built a team around him. I think,
- 34:50Speaker 4: you know, and maybe Mike doesn't want to leave. You know,
- 34:53Speaker 4: why would you want to leave Southern California live in
- 34:55Speaker 4: Newport Beach. It's great, But I think Mike is deserving
- 34:58Speaker 4: of being on a team that is gonna go to
- 35:00Speaker 4: the playoffs. I know there's one team that Mike would
- 35:03Speaker 4: be willing to go to, and that's Philadelphia, so we
- 35:05Speaker 4: could be close to home. So maybe it's time they
- 35:08Speaker 4: try to figure out a deal to get Mike to
- 35:09Speaker 4: Philly and allow him to play in some postseason and
- 35:12Speaker 4: allow his greatness to shine once again.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I mean, I guess the saying is, if you know,
- 35:18Speaker 2: you know, But I think sometimes in baseball, if you
- 35:22Speaker 2: don't know, you don't know. He's never been in another
- 35:26Speaker 2: organization ever. And we clamor for guys to stay. We
- 35:29Speaker 2: clamor for Clayton Kershall, don't sign with the Rangers. I
- 35:33Speaker 2: know you'll go home. We want you to stay in
- 35:36Speaker 2: an organization. We want to see Mike Trout on a
- 35:39Speaker 2: team that's in the playoffs. Mike tried at four hundred
- 35:42Speaker 2: and fifty three at bats last year and he had
- 35:44Speaker 2: twenty six homers. I still think there's more. Even though
- 35:47Speaker 2: Britt wrote an article staying there is it's.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Did I I did not say that?
- 35:57Speaker 1: All right, Let's check out this Instagram post from Bett
- 36:00Speaker 1: MGM cities with the most championships in the four major
- 36:03Speaker 1: sports since twenty ten. You see La at the top,
- 36:07Speaker 1: hid per second, Boston and San Francisco. Then we have Miami,
- 36:10Speaker 1: Kansas City, and Chicago.
- 36:13Speaker 3: On that list.
- 36:14Speaker 1: So not a super surprising list, but definitely a group
- 36:18Speaker 1: that I think if you look at you look at
- 36:21Speaker 1: those cities, you're like, yeah, well LA is a top
- 36:22Speaker 1: because they've won three times since twenty twenty, so like, yeah,
- 36:26Speaker 1: they are a little bit of like a modern dynasty. There,
- 36:29Speaker 1: you guys surprised by that, Chicago, Miami a little surprised.
- 36:33Speaker 4: Now, Miami surprised me a little bit. I had to think.
- 36:35Speaker 4: I had to go like through my roller decks of
- 36:37Speaker 4: sports teams, and then I remember the heat were pretty
- 36:40Speaker 4: good and had been pretty good. But yeah, I was
- 36:43Speaker 4: a little bit surprised to see Miami on there.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Going back to Cali strictly for the weather women in
- 36:48Speaker 2: the World Championships, I guess San fran and La all
- 36:53Speaker 2: in there.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I mean I think, yeah, you have to remember that
- 36:58Speaker 1: a world exists outside of baseball, because I'm like, why
- 37:01Speaker 1: is Houston on a list?
- 37:02Speaker 7: Oh?
- 37:03Speaker 3: Right, right? Because they just don't have the other sports.
- 37:06Speaker 1: And then of course Houston, I mean they didn't win
- 37:08Speaker 1: back to back.
- 37:09Speaker 3: They certainly won a lot.
- 37:10Speaker 1: They got there a lot they got there in loss.
- 37:12Speaker 1: So I have to remember that this is not just
- 37:14Speaker 1: a baseball specific list.
- 37:17Speaker 4: We are counting the Golden State Warriors as San Francisco.
- 37:20Speaker 4: I'm assuming, right, that's okay, okay, because when I saw
- 37:25Speaker 4: that too, I'm like, okay, I know they had their
- 37:26Speaker 4: run in the you know, twenty tens, you know, in baseball.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Like you said, it's not just baseball. You know the Niners,
- 37:33Speaker 4: haven't I guess when did they win? Did they win?
- 37:35Speaker 5: No?
- 37:35Speaker 4: So I guess it's really the Golden State Warriors carrying
- 37:37Speaker 4: that list.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know what, I would love to see
- 37:41Speaker 1: a list of like championships that people largely forgot about,
- 37:44Speaker 1: because like remember the like nineteen nineties New Jersey Devils,
- 37:47Speaker 1: Like where were those celebrations a parking lot? I mean,
- 37:49Speaker 1: I'm from Connecticut. I felt like, you're like, it's not
- 37:51Speaker 1: a huge deal, like our teen pro door. Give the
- 37:54Speaker 1: guy a little props, you know. I feel like the
- 37:56Speaker 1: we just forgot about how good they were back in
- 37:58Speaker 1: the day. But that's where's the list team forget.
- 38:02Speaker 4: I love your passion for hockey, you lost me when
- 38:04Speaker 4: you send New Jersey Devils.
- 38:10Speaker 1: All right, guys, uh, we've got uh, we've got bet
- 38:14Speaker 1: MGM here, get your steak back in cash if your
- 38:17Speaker 1: first touchdown scorer scores second. Instead, bet on any pro
- 38:21Speaker 1: football players score the first touchdown of the game.
- 38:23Speaker 3: If you're right, you win.
- 38:24Speaker 1: If your player score second, you get your stake back
- 38:27Speaker 1: in cash. Gambling problem or concern Call one eight hundred gambler.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 38:32Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 38:35Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 38:36Speaker 5: That's what he said.
- 38:40Speaker 7: Obviously, Josh, they haven't signed a multi year free agent
- 38:43Speaker 7: since you were still in a Pirates uniform, So I
- 38:45Speaker 7: think there it's time to break that stigma. It's yes,
- 38:49Speaker 7: Vonova was the last multi year free agent.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Yeah, in twenty seventeen.
- 38:56Speaker 4: Thank you for there, Thank you for yeah.
- 38:59Speaker 5: I mean wow yeah, mm hmmm speechless this time?
- 39:04Speaker 1: Yes, Uh, the Pirates will leave you speechless. That's just
- 39:10Speaker 1: kind of what it does. Guys, I have a that's
- 39:13Speaker 1: what she said, real quick, KP. This has been bothering
- 39:15Speaker 1: me since I saw you at the playoff, says, anyone
- 39:17Speaker 1: ever told you that you look like Kevin Gossman, like
- 39:20Speaker 1: a clean shaven Kevin Gossman. Oh, you get a side
- 39:23Speaker 1: by side here, that's that's Cody Stavenhagen. I would like
- 39:26Speaker 1: KP versus KG here. That is where I think they
- 39:30Speaker 1: look like.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Though.
- 39:31Speaker 1: It's nice to see our good pal Cody Steve in
- 39:32Speaker 1: Hagen again, you look like Kevin Gosman.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Do you see it?
- 39:34Speaker 8: Cratzy, No, I've never I've never been told that. I've
- 39:37Speaker 8: never been Do you do without the beard and Kevin
- 39:40Speaker 8: Gosman without the beard. Maybe because I often covered Kevin
- 39:43Speaker 8: when he came up. He's a little younger, so saw
- 39:46Speaker 8: that a lot of the clean.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Shaven Kevin Gosman he looks. You guys look similar. It's
- 39:51Speaker 1: been bothering me. No one's told you that in Toronto.
- 39:53Speaker 1: No one has told you that.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I think k I think. I think KP looks like
- 39:58Speaker 2: a mix between Brad Pitt, Tyler glass Now and George Clooney.
- 40:07Speaker 2: It's like a It's like a perfect mix of those
- 40:09Speaker 2: three guys. That's KP.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Definitely, the wrinkles like Clooney. Though you know, I got
- 40:13Speaker 4: the age.
- 40:15Speaker 2: I can't get past not wrinkles. Interesting.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Interesting, I love the I loved the I just I
- 40:22Speaker 1: can't unsee it. The Kevin Gosman thing, I can't unsee it.
- 40:25Speaker 2: I need to see it.
- 40:27Speaker 4: I know they're working hard right now to do it,
- 40:29Speaker 4: but they.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Are work smart. I think they thought I might saving again.
- 40:33Speaker 1: But it definitely there's definitely a lot of similarities between
- 40:35Speaker 1: you and Kevin.
- 40:37Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, similarities.
- 40:42Speaker 4: When I threw up that first pitch, I held a splitter.
- 40:44Speaker 4: I was trying to get that down action. I just
- 40:46Speaker 4: held onto it a little too long, you know.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Is that what it was?
- 40:50Speaker 1: No?
- 40:50Speaker 2: No, no, you just yard you just yard darted it.
- 40:53Speaker 2: But Gosman split, He like has that one eyebrow up
- 40:58Speaker 2: when he's pitching, and he's always like, I can't even
- 41:00Speaker 2: do it. I can't make my one eyebrow go up.
- 41:02Speaker 2: But he's he's got that good locked in face. Yeah
- 41:05Speaker 2: I can do it. You can't do it.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I don't think you can.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I think you need like a like an overactive muscle
- 41:10Speaker 1: on one side. Right, I don't know it's Kryptoni.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 41:14Speaker 1: See no, see like, there is a lot of similarities.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I'm telling you.
- 41:17Speaker 2: I don't hate it. I don't hate it.
- 41:19Speaker 4: I don't hate it either.
- 41:20Speaker 3: I don't hate it, especially if you shave kp here.
- 41:25Speaker 3: There's just a lot.
- 41:28Speaker 4: My kids have never seen me without a beard.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Scary day, interesting.
- 41:34Speaker 4: Kevin, And they're going to be like, who my dad?
- 41:41Speaker 2: Who are you?
- 41:43Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 41:43Speaker 1: You got to keep it for November. Isn't the no
- 41:45Speaker 1: shave November thing?
- 41:46Speaker 2: Right?
- 41:47Speaker 4: Hockey? Before we no, that's playoff beers, playoff beers.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Playoff beards. Yes, before we hit the break KP. I
- 41:56Speaker 2: need to hear your because you've been a free agent.
- 41:58Speaker 2: How many times that stat about the fact that the
- 42:01Speaker 2: last person they sought the Pirates signed with Ivon Nova.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Is that crazy to you? Or is that sad to you?
- 42:08Speaker 4: No, it's sad.
- 42:09Speaker 2: It's not crazy.
- 42:10Speaker 4: It's sad because you can't expect to win if you
- 42:13Speaker 4: only bring in players for one year. At the end
- 42:16Speaker 4: of the day, you own a Major League Baseball team.
- 42:18Speaker 4: If you don't want to own that team, sell them.
- 42:20Speaker 4: You probably are going to make a ton of money
- 42:21Speaker 4: on them. And if you can't find it within your
- 42:24Speaker 4: ownership group, within your pocketbook to go out and sign
- 42:27Speaker 4: players for multiple years, you don't deserve to own a team.
- 42:31Speaker 4: It's sad. You know my reaction is much different than
- 42:34Speaker 4: Josh Harrison's. He was speechless.
- 42:35Speaker 2: I'm not speechless.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Because I think it's really sad and the fans of
- 42:40Speaker 4: Pittsburgh deserve better.
- 42:41Speaker 1: All Right, A little news la Troy Hawkins with the Twins,
- 42:44Speaker 1: bullpen coach next season for Derek Shelton's FIRS staff in Minnesota.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Twenty one year MLB veteran. This is great for the game.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I agree with Bob Mangel it is great for the game,
- 42:54Speaker 1: a guy who's universally liked, well respected. Listen, if Derek
- 42:58Speaker 1: Shelton is going to come out from under, you know
- 43:00Speaker 1: the fact that he's very familiar to Twins fans. If
- 43:02Speaker 1: they're actually going to do something different, then they need
- 43:05Speaker 1: to make some energizing hires, and I think this is
- 43:08Speaker 1: one of them.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Guys.
- 43:08Speaker 3: I think this is something that is.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Going to get at least some fans excited, and that
- 43:13Speaker 1: is a fan base who is just very upset right now,
- 43:15Speaker 1: and very rightfully so over what's transpired.
- 43:20Speaker 4: In my opinion, it's much better than hiring someone out
- 43:22Speaker 4: of another sport. I love I played with LaTroy Latroit
- 43:28Speaker 4: obviously played LaTroy spent twenty one years of his life
- 43:31Speaker 4: sitting in a bullpen. Who better to kind of usher
- 43:33Speaker 4: these guys in and out of the bullpen, to talk strategy,
- 43:36Speaker 4: to teach guys how to prepare. It's a great hire.
- 43:39Speaker 4: He obviously has a connection to the Minnesota fan base,
- 43:43Speaker 4: the organization, He's worked within the organization over the last
- 43:47Speaker 4: couple of years. I think it's a great hire.
- 43:49Speaker 2: He has got what the kids call aura, and he
- 43:53Speaker 2: didn't spend his entire career in the bullpen. I wanted
- 43:55Speaker 2: to see how many starts he made. He made his
- 43:59Speaker 2: first four year, five years he was a starter. Then
- 44:03Speaker 2: he said, I'm going to the bullpen. So there's something
- 44:06Speaker 2: to be said about somebody who lasted that long in
- 44:08Speaker 2: the bullpen to be able to play in nineteen ninety
- 44:11Speaker 2: five and still in twenty fifteen with KP. It's understanding
- 44:16Speaker 2: that your role changes, understanding how everything moves and shakes.
- 44:20Speaker 2: You're not just always the bullpen guy. You're not just
- 44:23Speaker 2: always the guy the seventh in, the guy eighth and
- 44:25Speaker 2: a guy ninth inning guy. You got to be able
- 44:27Speaker 2: to change. And I think he'll bring that because I
- 44:30Speaker 2: worked with him for like a day when it was
- 44:32Speaker 2: with Team USA, and I love everything about him I
- 44:35Speaker 2: was Unfortunately I never got to play with him, So.
- 44:39Speaker 4: I think it's pretty And I would say the bullpen
- 44:42Speaker 4: arm is like unless you're the elite closer, like the
- 44:45Speaker 4: kind of mid tier middle relief guy is like the
- 44:47Speaker 4: most expendable human being in the baseball world. You could
- 44:51Speaker 4: just pick up a guy you know from who gets
- 44:54Speaker 4: DFAD or you know, a Rule five guy, and you
- 44:57Speaker 4: could throw him in the bullpen for a guy to last,
- 44:59Speaker 4: you know, what was that? Fifteen sixteen years in the bullpen?
- 45:02Speaker 4: And I know we had some points in his career
- 45:04Speaker 4: where he was pitching at the back end. But to
- 45:06Speaker 4: survive even ten years of being kind of a floater
- 45:09Speaker 4: in the bullpen kind of just doing whatever the team
- 45:12Speaker 4: needs you to do is incredible. So who better to
- 45:15Speaker 4: learn from than a guy like la Troy Hawkins?
- 45:31Speaker 2: Nice? What did I win? I got a KP. I
- 45:35Speaker 2: got a KP catch there Brent Jeroli on the bench
- 45:39Speaker 2: where I spent most of my career. I got one
- 45:41Speaker 2: of Scott's Emmy's. Do I have a Tony up there?
- 45:44Speaker 7: Too?
- 45:45Speaker 2: Do I have a Tony Award winner? I'm not sure
- 45:47Speaker 2: what the hot dog is doing? The hot dogs a
- 45:48Speaker 2: little a little provocative there. I'm not sure what's the
- 45:52Speaker 2: top award? Do you guys know what the top award is?
- 45:55Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Looks fancy though, it looks like.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean for a Friday. Claudia normally brings it,
- 46:08Speaker 2: but absolutely today she brought it one hundred.
- 46:14Speaker 4: Hey, I have a question for you guys. I got
- 46:16Speaker 4: I got a serious question. You guys can give me
- 46:18Speaker 4: an honest answer. God, is it too early for me
- 46:23Speaker 4: to put my Christmas lights up.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Yes, yes, Pratzy Pratty says no, I say yes.
- 46:33Speaker 4: When when's that cut off? When's that cut off for you? Also,
- 46:36Speaker 4: let me give you a little context. Let me give
- 46:38Speaker 4: you a little context too. I am leaving for the
- 46:40Speaker 4: week at Thanksgiving to go see my in laws, so
- 46:43Speaker 4: I'm missing that week. So I feel like I need
- 46:45Speaker 4: to get it done before.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Okay, with that context, I say, you can do it before.
- 46:49Speaker 1: But in general, I feel like once Halloween is over,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I see like people take down there like pumpkins, and
- 46:55Speaker 1: all of a sudden.
- 46:55Speaker 3: It's Christmas.
- 46:56Speaker 1: And I love Thanksgiving. There's no presence involved. It's all
- 47:00Speaker 1: about just sitting around and eating and your fat pants,
- 47:02Speaker 1: watching football, then eating more pie and then passing out.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Why are we like rushing to get to Christmas? It's
- 47:08Speaker 1: like Thanksgiving never gets hits too.
- 47:10Speaker 4: It's not rush come to your house for Thanksgiving because
- 47:12Speaker 4: that sounds incredible. Fat pants, eat, eat more, watch football,
- 47:17Speaker 4: and then pass out.
- 47:19Speaker 2: KP's never had KP's never had a Thanksgiving. He's never
- 47:23Speaker 2: had a Thanksgiving. Since he's been a player, He's gone
- 47:25Speaker 2: to Thanksgiving, but he's been like, I gotta still focused.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Where are we going. I gotta train, okay, two hours
- 47:33Speaker 2: in the morning and then and I gotta hit because
- 47:35Speaker 2: that's when I'm starting to hit. Now. This is KP's
- 47:37Speaker 2: first double dip of the pumpkin Pie.
- 47:40Speaker 4: I'll make sure my wife sends you guys a picture
- 47:43Speaker 4: of me passed out. I don't know if it's gonna
- 47:45Speaker 4: be food or pie. It might be something else, but
- 47:47Speaker 4: I'm going to pass out on my first thing.
- 47:49Speaker 1: The meal isn't over when you're full. It's over when
