- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:16the question, what kind of fruit am I
- 0:18bearing at work?
- 0:20Because we don't always bear the kind of
- 0:22fruit that we wish we would.
- 0:23But by God's grace, by the power of
- 0:25the Holy Spirit, we can bear fruit that
- 0:27is good.
- 0:33I'm continuing a little explication of Paul's letter
- 0:36to the Galatians that I started in the
- 0:37previous episode.
- 0:39So if you haven't listened to that one,
- 0:40make sure you give a listen, because we're
- 0:41just going to pick up right where we
- 0:42left off.
- 0:43We finished by talking about flesh versus spirit.
- 0:46The idea that your flesh actually is your
- 0:48body.
- 0:48Paul means your body when he says your
- 0:50flesh.
- 0:50But he means your body as it's been
- 0:52formed, contrary to God, as it's been formed
- 0:54by sinful habits, sinful routines over time, and
- 0:58the way that that's still there embedded in
- 1:00you when you come up against what you
- 1:02really want to do as a disciple of
- 1:03Jesus.
- 1:05Now, we talked about how the Stoic philosophers
- 1:07believed that it was rational philosophical reflection was
- 1:11how you would get mind over matter, how
- 1:13you would become a master of your body
- 1:15rather than a slave of your passions.
- 1:17It's really interesting.
- 1:19Paul, in this passage, right after the fruit
- 1:21of the spirit, he says this.
- 1:24And those who belong to Christ Jesus have
- 1:26crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
- 1:30Now, who does that sound like?
- 1:31That kind of sounds like a stoic philosopher,
- 1:33right?
- 1:33Oh, yeah, crucifying the flesh with its passions
- 1:36and desires and overcoming those passions and desires.
- 1:40So Paul's diagnosis is very similar to the
- 1:43Stoics.
- 1:44He's saying, yeah, there are passions, there are
- 1:46superficial pleasures that can control our lives and
- 1:48can be very destructive, just like the Stoics
- 1:50would say.
- 1:52But his prescription for that diagnosis is dramatically
- 1:55different rather than philosophical reflection and the rational
- 1:58taking possession over the passions.
- 2:01What he says is those who belong to
- 2:04Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its
- 2:07passions and desires.
- 2:09The prescription is union with Christ.
- 2:12Union with Christ in his crucifixion, his death
- 2:14and resurrection, allows us to put to death
- 2:18to crucify those habits of our body that
- 2:21are contrary to his way of life, his
- 2:23teaching.
- 2:24Crucifixion was all about control.
- 2:27Literally involved nailing people's limbs down so they
- 2:30couldn't move their limbs.
- 2:32So this metaphor of crucifying the desires of
- 2:34the flesh is about finding that power over
- 2:36the things that we have an urge to
- 2:38do, finding that power over the passions and
- 2:40desires of our flesh that are contrary to
- 2:43what we really want to do as disciples
- 2:45of Jesus.
- 2:46When we are united with Jesus, when we
- 2:48belong to him, we can crucify those desires.
- 2:51We can control them.
- 2:52We can overcome them.
- 2:53We can do what we really want to
- 2:56do as children of God by the power
- 2:58of the Holy Spirit.
- 2:59That's really good news.
- 3:01This teaching doesn't just answer the Stoic idea,
- 3:04though, that rational philosophy is somehow the answer.
- 3:08We need the Holy Spirit.
- 3:09The Holy Spirit is also an answer to
- 3:11a misunderstanding on the Jewish side of things.
- 3:14So the Stoic philosophers, they were in the
- 3:16Roman world.
- 3:16There were also many Jewish followers of Jesus
- 3:20in the first century.
- 3:21Jesus himself was Jewish.
- 3:22All of the twelve apostles were Jewish.
- 3:24Paul was Jewish.
- 3:25And some of those disciples of Jesus came
- 3:28along to the early Christian community in Galatia
- 3:30after Paul had left it.
- 3:33And they said, look, we agree with Paul
- 3:35that Jesus is Messiah.
- 3:36That's good.
- 3:38But here's the thing.
- 3:39Doesn't matter if you're not ethnically Jewish.
- 3:41You need to become Jewish if you're going
- 3:44to be part of God's covenant family.
- 3:45Jesus was Jewish.
- 3:47God's covenant has always been with the Jewish
- 3:48people.
- 3:49So you really need to become Jewish.
- 3:51You need to get circumcised if you're a
- 3:52man and you need to keep the regulations
- 3:54of the Torah regardless.
- 3:56And that's essential.
- 3:57That's part of what marks you as part
- 3:59of the covenant.
- 4:01Now, before we get into how Paul responds
- 4:03to this, I just want to point out
- 4:04how reasonable this argument seems.
- 4:07This is not like way out of left
- 4:08field, totally something that nobody would ever expect
- 4:12someone to say.
- 4:13This kind of makes sense.
- 4:14Like they're saying, like, who is God?
- 4:17God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
- 4:19Jacob.
- 4:19God is the God of Israel.
- 4:21God established his covenant with a specific people,
- 4:23the people of Israel.
- 4:25And so if you want to be part
- 4:25of that covenant, you should do it the
- 4:28Jewish way.
- 4:29It makes a lot of sense.
- 4:31And so it's easy to see how early
- 4:33Jewish disciples of Jesus would kind of stumble
- 4:35into this way of thinking.
- 4:37It's intuitive.
- 4:37It makes sense.
- 4:38It's like, this is the way we've always
- 4:39done it.
- 4:39We've always been following the law of Moses.
- 4:41We've always been keeping Torah regulations.
- 4:42Circumcision is such an important symbol.
- 4:45The horror of being uncircumcised is talked about
- 4:48throughout the Jewish scriptures.
- 4:50So this is not something that's strange.
- 4:53It makes sense that people would think this
- 4:54way.
- 4:56And yet Paul gets more incensed and more
- 4:59angry about this approach to the good news
- 5:01about Jesus than anything else in the whole
- 5:03of the New Testament.
- 5:04His letter to the Galatians has his most
- 5:06extreme and emphatic language.
- 5:08He says that they're preaching a different gospel.
- 5:10So we got to ask, what's going on
- 5:12here?
- 5:12You can kind of see where the Jewish
- 5:14disciples are coming from.
- 5:16Paul calls them agitators because they're agitating.
- 5:18They're confusing the Galatians.
- 5:19And so we can empathize with the agitators.
- 5:21We get where they're coming from.
- 5:23But for Paul, it's a black and white
- 5:25issue.
- 5:26It's a non-starter.
- 5:28Why is this?
- 5:29Why is this?
- 5:30Well, remember how we were asking the question,
- 5:32where does deep inner goodness come from?
- 5:34And the stoic philosophers were like rational reflection
- 5:36on philosophy.
- 5:37That's where you're going to, that's the pathway
- 5:38to deep inner goodness.
- 5:40Obviously, in the context of God's covenant with
- 5:42his people, God himself is the source of
- 5:44deep inner goodness.
- 5:46So for any Jew, the question is, how
- 5:48do I get in touch with God?
- 5:49How can I be connected with God?
- 5:51How can I be part of what God
- 5:52is doing in the world?
- 5:54And the answer to that question is being
- 5:55part of God's covenant, specifically God's covenant with
- 5:58Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 5:59And for the longest time, following the law
- 6:02of Moses was part of that covenant.
- 6:04So again, this makes sense.
- 6:06But even though following the law of Moses
- 6:09was part of that covenant, following the law
- 6:11of Moses was not the source of that
- 6:12covenant.
- 6:13And that's something that Paul is at pains
- 6:14to explain throughout Galatians.
- 6:17And he unpacks it in Romans again.
- 6:19He's saying just because the law was given
- 6:21doesn't mean the law was the source of
- 6:24life.
- 6:25So in Galatians 3 21, he says it
- 6:28this way.
- 6:29He says, if a law had been given
- 6:31that could give life, then righteousness would indeed
- 6:35be by the law.
- 6:38So he's saying, let's just use our thinking
- 6:39caps here.
- 6:41Suppose there's a law out there and that
- 6:43law really can impart life to human beings.
- 6:46If there was a law like that, great,
- 6:49let's follow that law.
- 6:50And that would be how we would be
- 6:52part of what God is doing in the
- 6:53world, following that law.
- 6:55But his point is that's not how the
- 6:57law works.
- 6:57That's not even how the Torah was ever
- 6:59meant to work.
- 7:00The way that Dallas Willard puts it is
- 7:02the law is the course of life.
- 7:04It shows us the way to live, but
- 7:05it's not the source of life.
- 7:07It doesn't actually give us the life to
- 7:09power that way of life.
- 7:11It was never intended to.
- 7:13That's not, that's not how God works.
- 7:15And Paul points out, Hey, Abraham, he actually,
- 7:17he had a connection with God even before
- 7:19he got circumcised.
- 7:20And so obviously circumcision couldn't be the source
- 7:22of life because God himself is the source
- 7:25of life.
- 7:26And then Paul emphatically says, and if we've
- 7:29received Jesus as Messiah, we've put our faith
- 7:31in him, then we've received that life.
- 7:34That that's all we need.
- 7:35We don't need anything beyond Jesus as Messiah.
- 7:39This is why he is so passionate about
- 7:42this, but this creates a problem.
- 7:45This creates a problem.
- 7:46Again, the source of deep inner goodness, we
- 7:48can be tracking.
- 7:48Okay.
- 7:49So the source of deep inner goodness is
- 7:50God himself.
- 7:51It's not the law, but then like, what
- 7:54do you do with all those works of
- 7:56the flesh, like all those things that people
- 7:58do?
- 7:59Again, we don't have the agitator side of
- 8:01the conversation.
- 8:02So we don't know exactly, totally what's motivating
- 8:04them, but often people who are motivated about
- 8:08rules, what they're concerned about is moral chaos.
- 8:12It's like, well, if we don't have rules,
- 8:14aren't people just going to do whatever the
- 8:15heck they want?
- 8:16And isn't that awful?
- 8:18It's like, well, yeah, it is.
- 8:19I mean, it's everything Paul was talking about,
- 8:20impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, the whole nine
- 8:25yards.
- 8:26It's like, what, those seem like good things
- 8:27to have rules against.
- 8:28Right?
- 8:28Like, you know, do we just want anarchy?
- 8:32And so again, it's, it's very reasonable.
- 8:34You can understand maybe part of their motivation
- 8:36was this sense of we've just got to
- 8:38have rules for them.
- 8:39We got to control people.
- 8:40We got to somehow bridal people's lusts and
- 8:42their passions and, and contain it somehow.
- 8:44And that's what, that's what law is good
- 8:45for.
- 8:47And Paul would basically agree with them on
- 8:48that point.
- 8:49He'd say, well, yeah, that is what law
- 8:49is good for.
- 8:50But here's the problem.
- 8:51The problem is that that doesn't actually change
- 8:54that we do those bad things.
- 8:55It just helps us know that we do
- 8:56those bad things.
- 8:57That doesn't actually fix us.
- 8:58It doesn't actually heal us.
- 8:59It doesn't actually do something new inside of
- 9:02us.
- 9:02It just identifies what's wrong with us.
- 9:05It's a diagnosis, but it's not a prescription.
- 9:08Another way we could break this down just
- 9:09to kind of help understand is it seems
- 9:12as though if you're giving Gentiles permission, not
- 9:16to keep Torah, that they're just going to
- 9:19go crazy.
- 9:20They're just going to go nuts because they've
- 9:23got permission to do whatever the heck they
- 9:24want.
- 9:25And Paul actually gets at this in chapter
- 9:27five.
- 9:29He says, for freedom, Christ has set us
- 9:31free.
- 9:31Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again
- 9:33to a yoke of slavery.
- 9:35Again, that slavery would be trying to use
- 9:36the Torah as the source of life, trying
- 9:38to say it's by keeping Torah that I'm
- 9:40in the covenant.
- 9:40He's like, no, no, no.
- 9:41Our freedom comes through Christ.
- 9:42Faith in Christ, that's what brings us into
- 9:45the covenant.
- 9:45We don't have to keep Torah too.
- 9:47But then he says, for you were called
- 9:50to freedom, only do not use your freedom
- 9:53as an opportunity for the flesh.
- 9:56But through love serve one another.
- 9:59Let me read that again.
- 10:00For you were called to freedom, brothers, only
- 10:03do not use your freedom as an opportunity
- 10:05for the flesh, but through love serve one
- 10:08another.
- 10:10That word opportunity is actually a military term
- 10:12that means base of operations.
- 10:14So he's saying, don't use your freedom as
- 10:16a base of operations for the flesh, but
- 10:20through love serve one another.
- 10:25What puts that love in our hearts?
- 10:27It's the spirit of God.
- 10:29What's the internal change that God makes?
- 10:32It's changing our hearts through love, through the
- 10:34power of his Holy Spirit.
- 10:36So an external thing like circumcision cannot accomplish
- 10:40what God can accomplish in our hearts through
- 10:43the gift of his Holy Spirit.
- 10:46This is why Paul gets so agitated and
- 10:49animated about the agitators is that they basically
- 10:51have a really bad theology of the spirit.
- 10:54They're saying people do all sorts of problems.
- 10:56So what we need is the law.
- 10:57And Paul says, no, no, no, no, no,
- 10:58no, no, no, you're right.
- 11:00People do all sorts of problems.
- 11:01What we need is a change of heart.
- 11:03And for that, we need the spirit of
- 11:04God.
- 11:05And guess what?
- 11:05If you put your faith in Jesus as
- 11:06the Messiah, you've got the spirit of God.
- 11:08You don't need to keep the law in
- 11:09order to have the spirit of God.
- 11:11And in fact, this love that the spirit
- 11:13puts in your heart, that fulfills what's most
- 11:15important about the law.
- 11:16Anyways, Paul says this, uh, and now this
- 11:19is moving ahead to chapter six, uh, bear
- 11:21one another's burdens and so fulfill the law
- 11:23of Christ.
- 11:25He says, it's this love we have for
- 11:26each other fulfills what's necessary about the law,
- 11:30all of those rules and regulations and rituals.
- 11:31What they were trying to get at is
- 11:33this is what it looks like to live
- 11:34in love under the care of God.
- 11:36And we can do that now because God
- 11:37is living inside of us in the Holy
- 11:39Spirit.
- 11:41So where does that leave us?
- 11:43Well, first I want to again, emphasize how
- 11:45plausible the approach of the Jewish agitators is.
- 11:49This happens in Christian communities all of the
- 11:52time.
- 11:53There's some sort of problem and people think
- 11:55that rules are going to be the solution.
- 11:57There's some sort of issue and people think
- 11:59that we've just got to control people's behavior.
- 12:02But, but this intuition actually cuts against character
- 12:06formation actually cuts against the fruit of the
- 12:08spirit.
- 12:09Because if you're going to have the fruit
- 12:10of the spirit, what you have to do
- 12:11is interact with the spirit of God, taking
- 12:14responsibility for the kind of human being you're
- 12:16really becoming over time.
- 12:18Whereas if you just have to follow a
- 12:19list of rules, you just have to follow
- 12:21a list of rules, regardless of what's going
- 12:22on in your heart.
- 12:24Dallas Willard puts it like this.
- 12:26He says, as a child of the King,
- 12:28I always live in his presence.
- 12:31By contrast, the way of law avoids individual
- 12:33responsibility for decision.
- 12:35It pushes the responsibility and possible blame onto
- 12:38God.
- 12:39That is one reason why people who must
- 12:41have a law for all their actions lead
- 12:43such pinched and impoverished lives and develop very
- 12:46little in the way of genuine depth and
- 12:47godly character.
- 12:49I think of a saddening example of this.
- 12:51My dad used to be like the generosity
- 12:53pastor at our church.
- 12:54So he bought a book about four different
- 12:56views of tithing.
- 12:57Like how should we teach about tithing?
- 12:58You know, it's in the Jewish law, but
- 13:00it's not in the new covenant explicitly, but
- 13:02it still seems like a good idea.
- 13:03And I read some of that book and
- 13:05there was an author in that book.
- 13:06I won't even say his name because it's
- 13:07just so sad.
- 13:08But he added up all of the Old
- 13:10Testament regulations about tithing.
- 13:13And he said, okay, here's the percentage.
- 13:15It's not actually 10%.
- 13:15It's some, some higher percent because you also
- 13:17got to factor in these other things from
- 13:18the festivals and the sacrifices.
- 13:20All that God wants is that exact percentage
- 13:22of your income.
- 13:23That's what you owe to God.
- 13:24That's the only thing you need to worry
- 13:25about.
- 13:26But that was his teaching.
- 13:28What's going on in the heart of someone
- 13:29who teaches that?
- 13:30He is so afraid about responsibility.
- 13:33He is, he is just terrified of the
- 13:35idea that he might have to discern something
- 13:37about generosity in the Holy Spirit in his
- 13:40actual life.
- 13:41He just wants a rule.
- 13:42He just like, just tell me the percentage
- 13:43God and I'll do it.
- 13:44And then I know I can feel okay
- 13:46about things.
- 13:47He's pushing the responsibility back onto God.
- 13:49But that's not the point.
- 13:50The reason that the tithe law is not
- 13:52explicitly commanded again in the New Testament is
- 13:54not because it's a bad idea.
- 13:56It's because we're called to a transformation of
- 13:58our character.
- 13:59We're called to a radical generosity fueled by
- 14:02the Holy Spirit.
- 14:03Again, in freedom, without compulsion, as Paul says
- 14:06in a different passage.
- 14:07The whole point is to change who we
- 14:09are as human beings, not to get our
- 14:11behavior to conform to a specific rule.
- 14:13So where does that leave us?
- 14:15What's the alternative?
- 14:16How do we keep in step with the
- 14:18spirit?
- 14:19As Paul says, it's really fascinating because Paul
- 14:21is addressing so many internal dynamics, but then
- 14:24he keeps turning to social answers as well.
- 14:26He keeps looking at how we interact with
- 14:28each other.
- 14:29So for example, he's talking about not gratifying
- 14:32the desires of the flesh.
- 14:33But then he says, starting in verse 25,
- 14:37if we live by the spirit, let us
- 14:38also keep in step with the spirit.
- 14:40Let us not become conceited provoking one another.
- 14:43Inveying one another.
- 14:44So his first application after this whole teaching,
- 14:46his, his vice list, his virtue list, keeping
- 14:48in step with the spirit is let us
- 14:50not become conceited provoking one another, envying one
- 14:52another.
- 14:53It's a social application within the body of
- 14:55Christ.
- 14:56So Paul's saying, if you want to keep
- 14:57in step with the spirit, the first thing
- 14:58is to pay attention to how are you
- 15:00treating your brothers and sisters in Christ.
- 15:03So now if we take this into the
- 15:04workplace, some of us may have brothers and
- 15:06sisters in Christ in our workplace.
- 15:08Some of us may have other human beings
- 15:09in our workplace, but how we treat those
- 15:11people, regardless of whether their belief is or
- 15:13not, that's an indication of what's really going
- 15:15on in our hearts.
- 15:16Again, you can tell the root by the
- 15:18fruit, the words and the actions of how
- 15:20we interact with other people.
- 15:22That's what demonstrates what's in our heart.
- 15:24It's determined by what's in our heart.
- 15:27As Paul continues to unfold these applications in
- 15:29chapter six, he says this, do not be
- 15:32deceived.
- 15:33God is not mocked.
- 15:34For whatever one sows, that will he also
- 15:37reap.
- 15:38For the one who sows to his own
- 15:39flesh will from the flesh reap corruption.
- 15:42But the one who sows to the spirit
- 15:44will from the spirit reap eternal life.
- 15:47And let us not grow weary of doing
- 15:48good, for in due season we will reap
- 15:51if we do not give up.
- 15:52So then, as we have opportunity, let us
- 15:55do good to everyone and especially to those
- 15:57who are of the household of faith.
- 16:00He repeats the same cycle again.
- 16:02He does a little bit of teaching about
- 16:03the Holy Spirit.
- 16:04He says, if you sow to the Holy
- 16:05Spirit, you from the Holy Spirit reap eternal
- 16:07life.
- 16:08You sow to the flesh, you from the
- 16:09flesh reap corruption.
- 16:10It's basically just another metaphor for the same
- 16:12thing he's been saying before, that look, you
- 16:14really do need outside help.
- 16:16You really do need the Spirit of God
- 16:17inside of you.
- 16:18And you really need to be active in
- 16:20that.
- 16:20And as you're active in that, that's where
- 16:22the life comes from.
- 16:24It's by our interaction with the Holy Spirit.
- 16:26That's what eternal life is.
- 16:27It's the life that we live in God,
- 16:29in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 16:31But then his application of that is social.
- 16:33It's so then, as we have opportunity, let
- 16:35us do good to everyone.
- 16:36And especially those who are of the household
- 16:38of faith.
- 16:39So if you want to live out life
- 16:40in the Spirit, do good to people.
- 16:41Go around doing good things, especially for brothers
- 16:44and sisters in Christ, but really for everybody,
- 16:46especially doesn't take away from the other one.
- 16:48And so when you think about your workplace
- 16:50and you're thinking about what it means to
- 16:52bear the fruit of the Spirit in your
- 16:53workplace, the way that you interact with other
- 16:55human beings in your workplace should be your
- 16:57first focus.
- 16:58We'll talk about prayer and other things that
- 17:00influence our life with God at work.
- 17:01But really the question is, how am I
- 17:04loving and serving other people during the workday?
- 17:07That's the question.
- 17:09If you just focus on that, that will
- 17:10guide you toward the fruit of the Spirit
- 17:12more than anything else.
- 17:13That's your true north.
- 17:16And when we do that, we come up
- 17:18against those works of the flesh really fast.
- 17:21We realize how bad we are at loving
- 17:23other people and how much we need God's
- 17:25grace, how much we need that outside help
- 17:27to make a change in our hearts.
- 17:29And that's what we're going to start talking
- 17:30about with our next episode is the part
- 17:33of the fruit of the Spirit that I
- 17:34love to hate, self-control.
- 17:36But the good news is this change is
- 17:38possible.
- 17:39This change is real because the Holy Spirit
- 17:41is in us.
- 17:42And we're going to start looking at that
- 17:43in more detail really soon.
- 17:47Lord Jesus, thank you for dying and rising
- 17:49again, for opening God's covenant to us as
- 17:53we trust in you.
- 17:54And we do ask that you would help
- 17:56us not to view life as just following
- 17:58the rules, but as an interaction with your
- 18:00Spirit, do your work in us as we
- 18:03do our work with you.
- 18:05Amen.
- 18:09Thanks for listening.
