- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of.
- 0:18Thinking. And just bring some joy into the
- 0:21world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. So there's a quote from John
- 0:33Powell that says the only real mistake is the one from which we
- 0:36learn nothing. And I, I really believe that
- 0:41quote is very, very strong and present.
- 0:43I like, I love that version of it because I don't like to think
- 0:47about things as mistakes. I like to think about them as
- 0:51well. That taught me something and I
- 0:54can move on. So it had to happen.
- 0:55So therefore really was it a mistake?
- 0:57I don't, I don't feel like it was a mistake.
- 1:00I feel more like it had to happen so that I could grow from
- 1:03it. But when we focus our attention
- 1:07on mistakes and the mistakes we've made, they have a
- 1:09significant holdover us often because the the reality is
- 1:13people get very tied into making mistakes.
- 1:16They don't want to make mistakes, they're afraid to make
- 1:18mistakes. They don't stretch.
- 1:19Whatever it might be in your head that is circulating around
- 1:23this, it is from that functional piece of not wanting to feel the
- 1:28pain of the mistake and it's it's impossible to avoid it.
- 1:34It's impossible to avoid it and no one teaches us early on.
- 1:39Let's look through our days, our weeks, and see what we could
- 1:43have done better or what we learned.
- 1:45Now. I have always been taught about
- 1:48what we could have done better. Like the framework is OK, here's
- 1:51what we did well, here's what we could have done better.
- 1:53How do we close the gap? That's a pretty standard
- 1:56framework that I have operated in for many, many years.
- 2:00However, because we're humans and we're wired like literally
- 2:04wired for safety and wired for our brains to be constantly
- 2:09connected to that little tiny factor of safety because safety
- 2:13is a very big piece of our entire world.
- 2:17Got to know you're safe, you're not safe, then there's a
- 2:19problem. So if you stop and pause for a
- 2:22minute and you think about this from a very straightforward
- 2:26perspective of I, I want my mistakes to matter.
- 2:31I and I'm you air quoting when I say mistakes, the things that I
- 2:34still perceive as a mistake. Because quite honestly, like I
- 2:38said, I don't have that framework.
- 2:40But if you do, and if I go back and I say, let me look through
- 2:43these things and see what, what is it that I still could
- 2:46perceive of a mistake? Like I push myself to look for
- 2:50that. I sat down and I did this little
- 2:52exercise and said, what can I learn from all of these?
- 2:55What are the things that I could take away from all of this?
- 2:58And I I have to say, it's really an outstanding exercise to put
- 3:03yourself in it and say, OK, here's where if I am feeling it,
- 3:09if I feel like about something, that's probably the best word I
- 3:13could use. It's just a sound, just yucky
- 3:16about it. Was it a mistake?
- 3:19Was it a choice? Doesn't really matter.
- 3:22But if you have that an an emotion around it on the that
- 3:25side of not feeling great about it, then look at it and say, OK,
- 3:30I know I can learn something from this.
- 3:33Let me go back and dig through it and say, what could I learn
- 3:38from this? So many people will say, you
- 3:41know, it was a mistake to marry that person.
- 3:43It's a very big thing that I hear throughout my coaching
- 3:47world. It was a mistake to marry that
- 3:48person. Oh, it was a mistake to go on
- 3:51that trip. It was a mistake to take that
- 3:53job. We look at these big, giant
- 3:55things in our lives and we say it was a mistake.
- 3:57And I go, no, no, no. You were supposed to be there
- 3:59because if you weren't, you wouldn't have been.
- 4:01So you've got to figure out what you are, you know, taking away
- 4:05from it. And you say what good, good
- 4:07things came from it? What, what went well while you
- 4:10were there? Because not everything, and I
- 4:12truly mean this, it is extraordinarily rare to have a
- 4:15situation be completely from the darker side and not find
- 4:19anything good from it. I mean, as we know through
- 4:24writings of people who have been imprisoned and, you know,
- 4:27tortured and all of this, they will come out and they will have
- 4:30survived by finding those threads of good things in it,
- 4:34what they learned from it. They got closer to God.
- 4:37They found peace in their hearts.
- 4:39They forgave their parents, whatever it might be they go
- 4:42through and they have these spiritual and just moving
- 4:47experiences that shift them. So we could say, well, that's
- 4:51worth it, right? Because they, they've
- 4:53transformed themselves in the process.
- 4:56So this exercise is very akin to that where you're pulling out
- 5:00stuff and you say, what are the good things of it?
- 5:03And especially if you use the example of like a marriage,
- 5:06there were maybe there were children that came from it.
- 5:09They're not mistakes. Maybe there were moments that
- 5:13you have to go back and maybe there aren't a lot of them, but
- 5:15you go back and you say, yeah, that was a great moment.
- 5:17Or that was a great trip, or this was a great time and you
- 5:21can put some happiness back into situations, happiness into your
- 5:27heart about all these things that we potentially are beating
- 5:30ourselves up for because that doesn't help us.
- 5:33So let's use the power of that, of that transformational mindset
- 5:38and say, I don't have to view it this way.
- 5:41I have a choice and switch it up because I promise you it'll be
- 5:45so much better when you don't look at them as just blatant
- 5:49things you can't change. Of course, we can't go back and
- 5:51change things, but we can change our perspective of what it meant
- 5:54to us. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:56you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:58Bye.
