- 0:00Another caller Here we have. We've got, oh again, a lot of
- 0:05good. God, gosh.
- 0:09Now I want to get to Brett, though.
- 0:10Let's talk to Brett from Missouri.
- 0:12Brett says the New Testament is a good guide for morality.
- 0:16Brett, you're live on Talk Heath and What's Up?
- 0:18Hello, I hope you're all doing well.
- 0:21I actually run a YouTube thing in a podcast myself, and I
- 0:26thought you guys were interesting, so figured I'd call
- 0:29you up. I'm at Brett Keene on YouTube,
- 0:31if you're curious. OK, right, So what?
- 0:37What do you think? Why do you think the New
- 0:40Testament is a good guide to morality?
- 0:42Let's start there. Well, there's Arnott's.
- 0:45It's face surface by itself. It is actually a good guide.
- 0:50I've even heard many atheists state that the philosophy that
- 0:54Jesus taught was exceptional and one could actually live a pretty
- 0:58good life based upon it. But I've also compared the
- 1:01theology and the morality based upon other religions as well as
- 1:05atheism, and I've come to the conclusion that atheism is a
- 1:10subjective morality. It's basically whatever feels
- 1:13good, nihilistic. Nothing really has any meaning
- 1:17and value. It's only what's acceptable in
- 1:19society or whatever nature evolved us to be.
- 1:23Kind of concept. Well, as you know, nature isn't
- 1:27very kind. There's a lot of things such as
- 1:29pedophilia, killing, destruction, and nature and
- 1:32society. We've got to you guys were just
- 1:35talking about the death penalty, right?
- 1:37One of the big reasons why Christians argue over it is
- 1:40because our system is broken. It's messed up, so we don't know
- 1:44if we should go along with the system that says it's OK to kill
- 1:47people when they can't even get their their cases right or
- 1:50people are treated fairly in the process.
- 1:53You get what I'm saying? Yes.
- 1:57And also Jesus is a victim of the death penalty.
- 2:01So I would think that most Christians would be against it,
- 2:05but you know, obviously they don't all agree on that.
- 2:07So yes, and Brett, before we continue, though everything
- 2:10you've said so far it's about atheism, I haven't heard
- 2:13anything about the New Testament.
- 2:14And also you've described atheist morality as nihilism.
- 2:18And I don't know if you've actually done, and I'm sorry,
- 2:21correct me if I'm wrong, Brett, but have you actually read the
- 2:24literature on secular philosophy?
- 2:27Well, I myself used to be a very I I actually used to be a very,
- 2:32very popular social media former atheist until I came over to
- 2:38Christianity. I've only been doing
- 2:40Christianity and theism for about 5-6 years, but I spent the
- 2:44majority of my life doing the Aaron Rahm, Matt Dillahunty,
- 2:47amazing anus kind of thing. Oh, amazing atheist.
- 2:50Sorry about that. That's great.
- 2:52Yeah, I remember. I appreciate that.
- 2:54But I'm, I'm asking about because you there's different
- 2:58forms of secular morality, right, right.
- 3:00Like if you look at Camus, if you look at Sarts, if you look
- 3:04at the Nietzsche, I mean, all of these are just 20th century
- 3:07examples. Obviously, you got to fill out
- 3:09the majority of secular moral systems, right?
- 3:11But like, there's more than one kind of secular morality.
- 3:14And is it subjective? Well, it's not based on a
- 3:17universal moral principle all the time.
- 3:19Yeah. But like, you know, to just come
- 3:22to the collision, say that it's all just nihilism.
- 3:25I that's a red flag for me, right?
- 3:27You understand? Right.
- 3:29Well, wasn't Nietzsche A nihilist?
- 3:31He basically said, you know, even though he believed that God
- 3:34did not exist, he even stated God's dead.
- 3:37He said we have to have something to fill the void And
- 3:40his writings. He said if we don't have some
- 3:43kind of moral foundation, then there's going to be, it's going
- 3:47to be a cataclysm. Society can't hold itself.
- 3:50That's why a lot of our leaders say that if you don't have God
- 3:54and those objective concepts to go along with, then it's it's
- 3:58how do you make laws like that? Who's going to make the laws if
- 4:02it's just our human subjective behavior, animalistic instincts
- 4:08and ideas? OK, so OK, we're talking about
- 4:13something. If you're talking about what
- 4:15Nietzsche wrote in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, which he's talking
- 4:19about the deconstruction of Christianity as the main social
- 4:25and moral function of society. He does say that there has to be
- 4:29something that comes afterwards, right?
- 4:31He's using Zarathustra is a, is a, is a.
- 4:35You know, it's sort of the prophet that he uses to sort of
- 4:39represent this. And and he said there's this
- 4:42coming of age where there's going to be, you know, people
- 4:44who are looking for something outside of of Christianity in
- 4:47order to fulfill that. And he has a lot of various
- 4:52ideas about what that might be. But like, when you say he's for
- 4:56nihilism, I mean, again, it's like, well, he's describing like
- 5:00one potential system, a system that he thinks is going to be,
- 5:04you know, useful across all of of of.
- 5:08Well, not useful necessarily. I mean, for usefulness, he's
- 5:10talking about the Uber mansion stuff before he's writing about
- 5:12that. But like Nyla's means it's a
- 5:14descriptive part of his more systems, OK.
- 5:18So that's that's kind of the nuance I want to make here
- 5:20because he's not saying this is a good thing and that this is
- 5:24like what we should all be following.
- 5:25He's saying that this is going to be the result of it if we
- 5:28don't develop, you know, secular forms of morality, which other
- 5:32writers like later do, which again, it's like this is a very
- 5:35complicated issue and it there's like a lot of thought that's
- 5:38gone into this. So I.
- 5:40What does this have to do with the New Testament either?
- 5:42I I I've also, yeah, it doesn't really have much to do.
- 5:44Like, like, OK, we can talk about the problems of secular
- 5:46morality all day, right? Absolutely.
- 5:49That doesn't mean the New Testament is suddenly the, like,
- 5:53greatest and best of all the morality systems out, right?
- 5:57Exactly. Those are two totally different.
- 6:01Well, I was when we started the conversation, if you'll
- 6:04remember, I said compared to the atheist position and other views
- 6:09that I've researched and studied, I believe that the the
- 6:13New Testament has a more efficient moral system than what
- 6:19is set up. And I don't just say that based
- 6:21upon obviously just belief and faith.
- 6:23I base it on stats and what we've seen historically.
- 6:27Any time that you seen where non believers were given power or
- 6:31political push, it always ended. Entire civilizations being
- 6:37enslaved or killed. Gun control where weapons were
- 6:40removed and people were left like sitting ducks in a barrel.
- 6:44So it never turned out good. Go ahead.
- 6:48Was OK. I don't think that's the case
- 6:50though. You know, America was one of the
- 6:53largest slave owning organizations like in the world
- 6:57for a long time, right? Obviously.
- 7:01And we were. It's not like we are less like,
- 7:04it's not like we're more Christian now, right?
- 7:07There are more people like statistically who identify.
- 7:10I'm not saying population wise but but but per person, like not
- 7:15per person. Sorry I'm the opposite of per
- 7:17person. If you divide up the population
- 7:20of slave owning Americans and and all Americans, there's like
- 7:23we're more Christians than there are now.
- 7:25So like I don't understand why you're saying it's the more use
- 7:29the word efficient. I just think it's interesting
- 7:30but like why on earth would we follow Christianity when it
- 7:34seems to lead to just as many problems as any other system.
- 7:38Like I I don't see how it's the best.
- 7:40And and you make and. The New Testament.
- 7:43Has I I was going to say you make a good point.
- 7:46In a way that it supports it so. Absolutely.
- 7:48It never. And there is not a single line
- 7:51in the Bible that says slavery is wrong, right, or that human
- 7:54ownership shouldn't happen. Well, sure there is.
- 7:57Sure. There.
- 7:59Yeah. Sure there is.
- 8:00Sure there is. Even in the Old Testament, it
- 8:03says that if you kidnap people then you'll be you'll get the
- 8:06capital punishment. You're not allowed to take a
- 8:09person as possession. The entire book of Exodus talks
- 8:13about a man who is sent by God to free over 400,000 slaves, and
- 8:18as far as a New Testament, Jesus says you aren't to others.
- 8:22Oh, oh, hold on. You made a positive service.
- 8:24It happened because it was the occupation of Jewish people.
- 8:29Am I able to finish my My point is.
- 8:31False. But also if you look at
- 8:34Leviticus, which is what Sydney is referencing, that outlines
- 8:37the actual rules that you have to follow if you're going to own
- 8:42a slave, which again, it doesn't say don't own a slave, it says
- 8:46this is what you do when you own a slave, these.
- 8:49Are the preferred ways in which you should own a slave, because
- 8:52you should, apparently. OK, so you know, you guys are
- 8:56making some good points, but as far as the New Testament goes,
- 9:00you guys would have to agree on this that if you're doing on to
- 9:03others, you want to be done under yourself and you're loving
- 9:06people and you're loving your neighbor and loving your enemy,
- 9:09you would not enslave them. That's, I mean, that's a simple
- 9:13thing to do all. There gives you permission to
- 9:15enslave them. Yeah, the slaves.
- 9:18Are not. Considered your neighbor in the
- 9:20Bible. That's not who they're talking
- 9:21about. They're talking about people who
- 9:22are your equals. They definitely had slaves that
- 9:26did not have the same rights and freedoms as everybody else.
- 9:29When they say love thy neighbor, they're talking about non
- 9:31slaves. They're talking about people who
- 9:32are equal in your community. I do not think that counts for
- 9:35slaves. Yes, in the epistles, Paul does
- 9:38not right Slave owners free your slaves.
- 9:41He says Slaves obey your masters.
- 9:44OK, the Jesus, like if we're just saying oh do unto others as
- 9:49you should do unto yourself is the best form of morality.
- 9:52OK, that's one thing. So we could talk about that, But
- 9:55that's different from just saying the New Testament is
- 9:58consistent in that idea because it's definitely.
- 10:00Not, no, it's definitely not. Well, let's let's take history
- 10:04for example. You mentioned slavery in the
- 10:07United States of America. Now, if we really dwelled into
- 10:10this, how did people get freed from slavery anyway?
- 10:14It was the Christian community, the Christian citizens who
- 10:17actually fought. You can't find me one single
- 10:20atheist who actually fought against us.
- 10:22You got Deist, you got Christians who actually you
- 10:25can't. Find a Christian that that
- 10:28supported slavery. You have Christians who actually
- 10:32stopped slavery. It was Christians who actually
- 10:35said we all come from God. We're all created equal that.
- 10:39It was like, definitely OK by most Christians for a long time.
- 10:45Yes, the American South, very Christian, very pro pro slavery
- 10:51like that as a whole. Those things go hand in hand.
- 10:56You do realize that there was a lot of Christians who were hung
- 10:59alongside blacks for actually trying to free them even before
- 11:03the war the. Christians that were doing the
- 11:05hangings like you, you really are doing a chicken and egg
- 11:09thing here. Okay, here's the chicken.
- 11:11It's the Christian society, the Christian institutions that
- 11:15allowed it. We didn't even allow women to
- 11:17vote until the 1900s, Okay. And that's also because of
- 11:22Christians, by the way. And it's because it was secular
- 11:26forms of morality, humanism, that was influencing this stuff
- 11:31more than anything, right? Humanism did not always exist in
- 11:35society, but more, as humanism began to develop, as secular
- 11:38forms of justice began to become widespread across the world,
- 11:43that's when we actually saw the social changes.
- 11:45It's not because people got to their senses and realized Oh
- 11:49well, Christianity actually says this.
- 11:51I'm sure some of them justified their anti slavery practices
- 11:55through Christian. In fact I know that for a fact
- 11:57because I've actually read about this subject.
- 11:59But if you also read about this subject, you will see document
- 12:02after document after document that outlines church sermons
- 12:06that outlines people's public opinions at the time.
- 12:09That said, yes, absolutely the owning of people is absolutely
- 12:14OK by Christianity, 100% so. Historically, historically,
- 12:21historically, again, it was OK. So historically, Christians are
- 12:25actually the ones who broke the slavery, and that's the reason
- 12:29why people are free today. But there wasn't any atheist
- 12:32back then. He stood up or defended it.
- 12:35Can you name at least three atheists who actually helped get
- 12:39rid of slavery? Is this how you do people?
- 12:42You just ran and ran and took those.
- 12:45People over in the 1st place, right?
- 12:48This was a mostly Christian society that were doing these
- 12:51things. Slavery was just.
- 12:52An atheist were doing it too. Legitimate practice and
- 12:55Christianity as anything else. Atheists were doing it, too.
- 12:59Because there are no against against slavery in the Bible.
- 13:05There is absolutely zero none no supporting scripture that says
- 13:09you shouldn't other you have to go out the back way around and
- 13:13say, Oh well the Bible says we should treat others like we
- 13:16should treat ourselves right and that and and then you can get to
- 13:19that conclusion. But but the actual institution
- 13:22of slavery is not prohibited in the Bible.
- 13:24What it's. Not prohibited by atheism
- 13:27either. You haven't been able to name
- 13:33You haven't been able to name 3 atheists you've actually did.
- 13:36Not watch the cold open. Brett, you were.
- 13:38I'm sorry, Brett, I don't know who you did on what you did on
- 13:41social media or whatever, but like, if you're going to be an
- 13:44influencer, you have to know the literature you have.
- 13:48To I guarantee that I know it more than both of you put
- 13:51together. You mute people and you rant
- 13:55over people and you don't let people who are actually
- 13:58intelligent debate you're. Standing and also.
- 14:01Just rant, rant, rant, mute, mute, mute you take.
- 14:04This position. They've muted me.
- 14:07I don't think. There's.
- 14:08A way they're just ranting right over me.
- 14:12Yes. You're muting me and you're
- 14:17ranting over me. See, you don't even have enough
- 14:20moral framework to listen to another person side of you.
- 14:24You've proven my point. First of all Brett, I'm talking
- 14:27to you right now on the show we're.
- 14:29Live. You're a coward.
- 14:30You're a coward. Why don't you come on my live
- 14:33show? Why don't you come on my live
- 14:35show and we'll see how things go.
- 14:38Brett, Brett, I have listened. I know who you are.
- 14:40I've listened to hours of your content, hours of your content.
- 14:43I've listened to so much of your content that I recognize what
- 14:46kind of conversation we were about to go into.
- 14:47Because I remember you and I've watched your content and I've
- 14:50listened to you ad nauseam. That's why I feel comfortable.
- 14:52Being like oh. This is not going to go well
- 14:54because I know exactly who you are.
- 14:56Not going well for you because you have no moral framework.
- 15:01I have listened to you so often that I don't even have to hear
- 15:03what you're about to say in order to know what.
- 15:05You're about, you're just going to speak?
- 15:06For me, they're. Muting me the entire time
- 15:11throughout the conversation, ladies and gentlemen, They have
- 15:15no moral framework. They can't even have a
- 15:17conversation. They just want to spell.
- 15:19Because you. Like to hear?
- 15:35Yourself live on air and you like to get people riled up, but
- 15:38I remember you, Brett. And I know you too.
- 15:41You have no moral framework. I've proved my point.
- 15:43I had. Nauseam.
- 15:44And I know how this conversation is going to go.
- 15:46And that's why your group is a minority in this time.
- 15:49And you? Won and you're probably.
- 15:50Going to make a video about how you won and and you know, oh I.
- 15:53Did I? Did the fact that you got to
- 15:55meet me over and over and over and rant?
- 15:57Over I know how to. Prove my point.
- 15:59You're a coward if. That makes sense.
- 16:02Yeah, it's cowardly to mute people like that and just rant
- 16:05right over them. Have no moral framework, and
- 16:08you've got no place to be able to tell us who's right and
- 16:11wrong.
