- 2:05I I reviewed replaced. It's a great game.
- 2:08Go play it anyways, boys. Nick.
- 2:14We stayed we stayed in the Italian horror folchi verse and
- 2:21we watched Zombie. Yes, it's very, very good.
- 2:29This was directed released in 1979 by Lucio Fulchi.
- 2:34Great flick, cult classic. This is also known as Zombie 2
- 2:38or Zombie Flesh Eaters. You know, he does what he wants,
- 2:44Fulchi does what he wants at all points and it's supposed to be
- 2:49over there. It was marketed as the follow up
- 2:51to Dawn of the Dead, which it most certainly is not.
- 2:56You, you can't just be like, well, here's my sequel.
- 2:58You can't just do that. It it follows around Anna, who
- 3:03travels to a mysterious Caribbean island to uncover the
- 3:06truth, but her missing father alongside the journalist Peter,
- 3:10where they uncover A mysterious thing on this island and it's
- 3:14overrun by the living dead. That is my synopsis of the film.
- 3:18That's all you're going to get, because I think you should go
- 3:20see this film if you haven't. I don't want to spoil it, but I
- 3:23want to talk about a lot of the elements, a lot of the story
- 3:26beats, a lot of the effects, and some of the fucking crazy shit
- 3:29that actually happened while filming this film.
- 3:32I have an addition before we get into that, you mentioned that it
- 3:36was supposed to be a sequel to Dawn of the Dead.
- 3:40So it's actually the concept for this that it would be a direct
- 3:45sequel to Zombie, which is spelled Zombie with an I, which
- 3:48is a re edited version of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead by
- 3:52Dario Argento which released with Yeah, it was just edited
- 3:58differently and contained a new score by an Italian prog rock
- 4:03band called Goblin. I love that.
- 4:06And Goblin as of 2024 was still around and performing live.
- 4:13We love that. That's dope.
- 4:15Pretty sweet. I I still think Flesh eaters.
- 4:20Zombie Flesh Eaters is a tight name.
- 4:23Well, they, it was, I think it, it's Zombie too, because it was
- 4:27supposed to be that sequel and it got released as Zombie in the
- 4:33US and then Zombie Flesh Eaters in the UK.
- 4:36Yeah, so. I think the UK probably got the
- 4:39best name. Oh I agree 100%.
- 4:41A lot of things going on with this film.
- 4:42Also the budget seemed to be around 400 to 500.
- 4:45K was shot primarily on location in the Dominican Republic, but
- 4:50there's scenes obviously in New York and in Italy.
- 4:54It's pretty cool stuff going on in this film.
- 4:57Bolshee doesn't hold any punches.
- 4:59This is really his like dive into like his very realistic
- 5:05gore hound movies. That was like his first big
- 5:08foray into US was with Zombie. And what if this does
- 5:12differently than Night of Living Dead is the zombies and Night
- 5:16Living Dead are scary because it's like our first, one of our
- 5:19first because there was a movie prior to this, which we've
- 5:22discussed in the last show episode where we talked about
- 5:25Night Living Dead. But what that does is make the
- 5:30zombies more like like feasible, right?
- 5:32Like they're slow, they're shamblers.
- 5:34It's cool. It's like the first time you've
- 5:36really seen it. This goes OK, they're slow,
- 5:39they're shamblers. They're hyper violent though.
- 5:43Like these things look way more gross.
- 5:46They're more akin to what we were used to, are getting used
- 5:50to with zombies. They are disgusting.
- 5:53The way they're killing people is just brutal and vicious.
- 5:57And that's what this movie is really known for, as well as
- 6:01it's brutal and vicious violence.
- 6:04Like this movie doesn't spare punches.
- 6:06There's a very, there's a couple very famous scenes, especially
- 6:10the splinter scene, which that in and of itself was a very
- 6:13difficult film or scene to film due to the rig that the actress
- 6:18had to wear that was just fucking her up.
- 6:21So like, really, yeah, there's there's a whole, there's a whole
- 6:25slew of filming troubles that I have a list for that was just
- 6:29one like the. So the infamous eye gouging
- 6:31scene used a mechanical rig and careful, careful timing.
- 6:37But the actor said it was physically and mentally
- 6:39stressful to shoot because like you are like in the film, her
- 6:44her actual eye is like inches away from this giant piece of
- 6:49wood. And then the shot is obviously
- 6:51the cut with the like the face being engulfed into the
- 6:55splinter. And that is the.
- 6:57Best splinter I've ever seen. Oh, it's the gnarliest thing
- 7:00you'll ever see. Is fucking gnarly.
- 7:04I think I know what Alex wants to talk about.
- 7:09Dude I just it's a whole movie though.
- 7:12It's great. Let's go into like.
- 7:15The entire movie is just sick all the way through.
- 7:19It's. What neither of you have seen
- 7:22Zombie I. Thought I have no.
- 7:26OK, so let's let's really dive here.
- 7:29Who wants to go first, being that this is your guys's first
- 7:32viewing of the film? I saw this film plenty of times
- 7:3710 years ago. I haven't watched it since then.
- 7:40But for you guys, what were your guys's thoughts on the film,
- 7:43especially going back to Folchi, right?
- 7:45Like we know what he likes to do now.
- 7:47We know how he likes to direct. He's rough.
- 7:50But going back to him seeing Zombie, what you guys think of
- 7:53that? Why don't you take it, Alex?
- 7:58Dog No. This dude's off a dab rig going
- 8:01shit. Oh, shut up.
- 8:03I didn't. I didn't bring my homework.
- 8:06I. Didn't.
- 8:07I? Did not.
- 8:08Oh fuck. I don't know.
- 8:12The entire movie is just it has a solid story for a fucking
- 8:15zombie flick. Like super solid story.
- 8:20I don't know, really good flake. I don't really know what to say
- 8:26about it. Just go fucking.
- 8:28Watch that show, it's very late. Yes, he is.
- 8:31So very amazing. Well, I, I mean, so it's, it is
- 8:37a, it's a somewhat of a different take on the zombie
- 8:40apocalypse story. I like that there's an aspect of
- 8:45a like science minded individual who goes out to this island to
- 8:50study what's going on and he still has no idea what it is.
- 8:53So whenever somebody asks, he still says that it's voodoo
- 8:56because he still hasn't quite figured out what's going on,
- 8:58even though he's he's like testing it.
- 9:01He's trying to push the theory of what's going on on the
- 9:07island. And the the zombies are
- 9:09interesting because they seem to sometimes be in like a
- 9:12hibernation. Like they don't, they're not
- 9:15always awake, which is interesting because in like, you
- 9:19know, night of the living dead is a good one where there's slow
- 9:22zombies and the, the terror comes from the fact that they
- 9:25never stop moving, Like they're always moving slowly.
- 9:28But these ones will like wait long enough to be buried.
- 9:33And then they'll just like wake up if they, if they smell or
- 9:36they like if they see somebody or they sense a person there.
- 9:40It's like if they're disturbed, if you disturbed where they're
- 9:43resting, it's like boom activated.
- 9:47Yeah, which is actually more. Creepy.
- 9:49Way more creepy than just like constantly roaming.
- 9:52Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because then because you never
- 9:55know truly how many there are, if they can be anywhere, which
- 10:00we have shown in the movie that they are everywhere.
- 10:06Like this island. It it it's shown pretty like at
- 10:10in like the last third, like the bidding of the last third right
- 10:14when the the crew is just like taking a little rest in the
- 10:16woods and they're just coming out of the ground like in every
- 10:20location. Like there could just be a
- 10:22zombie there and you have no idea until it like reaches up
- 10:25out of the ground and attacks you.
- 10:28And they're vicious, dude, because like in other Zion
- 10:30movies, it's like they grab you and like you're old.
- 10:33There's obviously nowadays like a zombie grab somebody.
- 10:36Like they have that strength aspect right where it's like,
- 10:38OK, the the fucking hand gets pulled out.
- 10:40And this is like back then it was just like cool.
- 10:43So the zombies gripping and it's like a vice grip going down on
- 10:46the dude's ankle, just pulling it and be gloving it almost.
- 10:49And that was awesome to see. But not only that, but like the
- 10:53effects in general in this film, like that makeup they had to
- 10:56wear. Fuck that dude.
- 10:58That shit was so heavy. Yeah, it looked like full head
- 11:05prosthetics for the most part. Like maybe a mask they were
- 11:09wearing or just like 1 big prop. But then some of them did have
- 11:14different effects. One of the effects I noticed for
- 11:16a lot of them, a lot of the zombies are walking around,
- 11:18their eyes are closed. Yes.
- 11:21Will that be indicative of like the the voodoo aspect to a
- 11:25degree, like the sewn eyelids and shit like that when you bury
- 11:28the bed a lot of. There's that one, there's that.
- 11:31There's that one shot, though, on top of the barn that Zombie
- 11:37pokes in and his one eye is open.
- 11:39Yeah, that that just that shot was so nice you.
- 11:43Can see the whites of the eyes too and it's like oh that's so
- 11:47sweet. There's a lot of cool camera
- 11:51stuff going on in this movie as well.
- 11:53Yeah, a lot. They do like, like a shot where
- 11:57it'll be focused on one person. The camera will like whip around
- 12:00180°. There's a lot of like kind of
- 12:04extended close up shots on the zombies to really get a good
- 12:08look at them. Yeah, the underwater scene is
- 12:12really impressive too. Very cool.
- 12:15Let's dive on in. So in this movie.
- 12:17Dive on into the underwater scene.
- 12:19Very good. This movie boasts this is a cult
- 12:24scene. This is a cult classic scene of
- 12:27a zombie shark fight. This is the first time it's ever
- 12:30happened in a movie. It was a real shark, so let's
- 12:37get that out of the way. This was a real fucking shark.
- 12:41This thing was a bit more aggressive than they had
- 12:46intended for, I guess, and it caused problems during the
- 12:53shoot. More aggressive as in, like the
- 12:57shark, the wild animal that they were filming near was more
- 12:59aggressive than they hoped. Yeah, the thing got pissed.
- 13:02The shark was not supposed to be aggressive, but unpredictably
- 13:06made it generally dangerous, Yes.
- 13:09It's a it looked like a fucking great white shark, dude.
- 13:13I mean, it was. So in some shots it looks much
- 13:15bigger than it actually is. When you see it wrestling with
- 13:19the guy, it looks much smaller, but like that's still a shark.
- 13:23That's still dangerous. The the zombie in the water was
- 13:27also a trained diver, so that is good because that scene is
- 13:32incredibly dangerous and he is caked in that makeup, which is
- 13:37like, unfortunately because they're in the ocean, it's just
- 13:42fucking ripping off his face. But you know what that I feel
- 13:46like? Do you feel like that added to
- 13:49it? It adds to it.
- 13:50It's falling off Ironic. The the ocean, like a body in
- 13:57the ocean, decays incredibly quickly.
- 14:00Yeah, yeah. So they would have had all the
- 14:02animals, like all the little fish nibbling off of it.
- 14:05And the salt water takes a toll on it as well.
- 14:08Yep Yep Yep Yep Yep Yep. I mean this scene is awesome
- 14:12though. This seat is so awesome and that
- 14:14shark got so pissed when it bit that zombies arm.
- 14:18It was just green duck going everywhere blows you.
- 14:22Sorry we keep it live on the show baby.
- 14:25And then you can just see that shark was like, this is not
- 14:28anything I actually want and it just fucks off for a minute.
- 14:32But for them to use a real shark and have a human fight a real
- 14:36shark in the 70s? Yeah, that's that could have
- 14:41been you could have been a Congo type situation.
- 14:45Congo the movie. Isn't isn't that the one where
- 14:48the people got got killed by wild animals while making the
- 14:53movie? Did that hurt?
- 14:55Did that happen during the? Congo.
- 14:57Congo. There's a there's a movie where
- 15:00people were killed by animals during the movie.
- 15:03What? It could be wrong, it might not
- 15:07be. Caught what?
- 15:10Yeah, you never heard of this? Oh.
- 15:13No. Oh well, yeah, it it, it
- 15:19happened. That's why I like when I saw the
- 15:21shark I was, I immediately thought it was like, oh,
- 15:24somebody's about to be bitten by a shark on camera for real.
- 15:28Like that's what I expected during that whole scene.
- 15:32Oh I have no idea dude, I I can't find.
- 15:38Anything about that I will vamp for a while.
- 15:41I'll see if I can find this. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:45But this is, again, the shark scene is fucking just an example
- 15:49of the lengths Folchi will go to, to just do what he wants, in
- 15:56my opinion. But it's it, it works here
- 16:00because Zombie doesn't. The film doesn't just go, here's
- 16:04that cool shark thing also, we're going to just continue
- 16:08with some silly shit like that. It's OK.
- 16:10Now we'll get back to the real shit.
- 16:11We just want to show you that we can do this.
- 16:14This is a wild shark too, right? I'm assuming.
- 16:17I probably. I don't know, I, I, I if they
- 16:21intended it for it not to be aggressive.
- 16:24I think maybe this was like a shark that they had an animal
- 16:27trainer bring, but then the thing got pissed off.
- 16:33That's so sick. Dude so.
- 16:35I mean, how much can you train a shark?
- 16:38Yeah, that's where I'm kind of. I don't know.
- 16:41Like a lion can be trained somewhat, an elephant can be
- 16:46trained. I don't.
- 16:47I mean, a dolphin can be trained.
- 16:48I don't think you can train a shark.
- 16:50Though I'm not a shark geologist.
- 16:51I don't know man. Also, the movie I'm thinking of
- 16:54is called Roar and over 100 people were injured making that
- 16:59movie, mostly from wild animals. That's a rough gig.
- 17:03I'd be fucking pissed. That's like people.
- 17:09People were cut, like, scratched by tigers, stepped on by
- 17:13elephants. It's yeah, not good.
- 17:16Not a good time. I needed fifty stitches after
- 17:19being attacked by a lioness. Oh.
- 17:22My God, not fucking around with animals to talk about filming
- 17:25troubles. This film had its own slew of
- 17:28them, including cast and crew dealing with intense heat,
- 17:30humidity, and then sex. Extreme exhaustion was
- 17:35constantly plaguing the set, as well as illness.
- 17:38Equipment struggled in the climate, especially with makeup
- 17:41effects melting or degrading. The again, the eye gouging scene
- 17:46had its own thing. Extras playing zombies often
- 17:49wore heavy prosthetics and extreme heat, increasing the
- 17:53risk of dehydration. Some did dehydrate and there was
- 17:57an incredible language barrier during the filming, which you
- 18:00can tell because the filming had its dubbing issues or not
- 18:04issues, but there was a lot of dubbing going on here.
- 18:08So I mean, this thing experienced its own fucking.
- 18:10It's a full G film though. Like it's going to have this.
- 18:14It's almost like getting on set with Stanley Kubrick and like
- 18:16not having a mentally torment you.
- 18:21He said he seems to be a director who you you know what
- 18:25you're getting into. You kind of know what if a if,
- 18:29if a movie by the same director is a little bit weird or a
- 18:32little bit quirky, You can expect the explanation like you
- 18:37can you already know what it's going to be.
- 18:40It's it's interesting. I mean his.
- 18:42I actually think that the the like the English translation
- 18:48issues are worse in the beyond than they were in this.
- 18:52Like there wasn't as much with this one.
- 18:55No, I I definitely agree on that and I like to be on.
- 19:00Yeah, it. Was.
- 19:03Beyond was good too. Yes brother, you got yes.
- 19:07You got to not dab it out before the show.
- 19:10You're fucking so sleepy. I'm so sleepy.
- 19:14I'm what's up? Nevermind.
- 19:18Go ahead. Sorry.
- 19:19What? What he's actually going to
- 19:23like? What's the drama?
- 19:27What you're saying? Nothing.
- 19:29Go ahead, Nick. I'm sorry.
- 19:30What drama? I don't know.
- 19:37Anyway, I'm. I'm cooked.
- 19:39Oh, I'm done. I posit this.
- 19:41Question but Alex, you're the the dry but grounded 1.
- 19:44Yes, Alex. Thick, dry, but grounded.
- 19:48Yeah, I posit. I was like the chat GPD just
- 19:51called me boring. Thank you chat GPD, you've
- 19:56broken a man's spirit so you piece of shit.
- 20:00He's just in the background, in the dark, laughing.
- 20:03I am. I'm laughing really hard and
- 20:04it's so good. Oh my God, I posit this final
- 20:07question before our review. Does the raw danger of the
- 20:11practical effects make this movie feel more I got 2 Like
- 20:14make this feel more real than Night of Living Dead?
- 20:18And does Zombie do a better job of representing the current
- 20:26zombie movies that we are accustomed to than the Living
- 20:30dead? It's 2 parter.
- 20:33I I think 1 there's, I mean, it's, it's only kind of cool to
- 20:41say it, but there's really nothing cool about putting
- 20:43actors in danger to make a movie when it's avoided.
- 20:47But it was also the late 70s and you could make an argument that
- 20:51they didn't really know yet. And also they were probably less
- 20:54regulations on safety it but I mean, you never want to hear
- 21:00about like actors being harmed on set making a thing.
- 21:06But I think some of it it adds to the mystique of the movie,
- 21:11you know, having a bit of legacy now.
- 21:13It it definitely adds to that. And I would say it is more like
- 21:19our current depictions of zombies, like you're walking
- 21:22Deads or you're 28 Days later where they are, you know, they
- 21:26are violent. They are a little more
- 21:29complicated than just a guy walking around.
- 21:32They have a, there's a, their abilities are sort of in
- 21:35question and what sort of drives them is also something that's in
- 21:41question. And, and, and the idea that they
- 21:43are given a source, like they come from somewhere and we're
- 21:47going to explore that a little bit.
- 21:48That's sort of what I think connects it to more modern
- 21:52movies because now a lot of modern movies are like, you want
- 21:56to figure out why? Like why did the zombies show
- 21:58up? Yep, love it.
- 22:01Do you guys prefer fast zombies or slow ones?
- 22:07Slow. I like shamblers.
- 22:11I do, I love shamblers, I really do.
- 22:14I think some I think a healthy mix of fast and slow is good
- 22:18though. But if I had to watch a zombie
- 22:20flick, I like the shamblers because I like the horde swarm
- 22:24effect. Fast zombie is cool for things
- 22:27like 28 days because it's not technically an actual zombie,
- 22:30it's just like a rage virus. But I mean, there's an argument
- 22:34to be had there. I'm going to go with slow.
- 22:41Yeah, my problem with fast zombies is it's harder to make a
- 22:45fast zombie because a fast zombie is not just like a zombie
- 22:50who can run as fast as a person can run.
- 22:52They're always like super fast and they always get, it always
- 22:56devolves into World War Z where they're just like a bunch of
- 22:59floppy ragdoll bodies stacking up on each other and I.
- 23:02Posit this corpses like that that are decaying.
- 23:08Yeah, they would fall apart from the act of running.
- 23:11The minute those bitches go it's going to be boom and the knees
- 23:15are going to crack and break, dude.
- 23:17People's knees explode. Train runner's knees just
- 23:20explode from the act of running. And you want me to believe that
- 23:23this. Yeah.
- 23:25You want me to believe that this decaying corpse just runs around
- 23:28like that? I I, I think it's less
- 23:30realistic. Like the slow zombie is, is
- 23:34scarier because it's slow, Yeah, than a zombie that's fast.
- 23:38Like it's not as scary because they're fast.
- 23:41I'm going to. I'm going to throw this in
- 23:42there. I left the concert before the
- 23:44fucking main acts finished their set because my knees and my
- 23:48ankles hurt. I dipped these zombies that have
- 23:51been dead for fucking years who are getting up.
- 23:53They ain't running bro. Yeah, they're just going to turn
- 23:57into a pilot. You know, it's zombie semantics,
- 24:00but yes, definitely, definitely slow.
- 24:03And these are really good slow zombies because they will just
- 24:06sort of walk in One Direction for a while, but they'll also
- 24:10just like they'll wait and they'll reach out and they'll
- 24:13grab you. Yeah, like the one in the coral
- 24:15reef. That was sweet.
- 24:17How? Long was he down there, you
- 24:19know? Son of a bitch, dude.
- 24:21If that if he can be down there, does that mean that zombies
- 24:24don't have to breathe? They.
- 24:26Defy all laws, dude. Where are there?
- 24:30What the fuck? What the fuck?
- 24:32They're in our waters. Those are that those are the
- 24:34interesting things that this movie, that this movie proposes
- 24:40to us. Yeah.
- 24:41But they did have Yeah, that was a weird.
- 24:44They did have the end. The the end is, is a very like
- 24:53generic 80s sci-fi ending where they like, look at the radio or
- 24:57look at the information and see that, like, the rest of the
- 25:00world's been taken over, that it's ended.
- 25:04And then we see the zombies just like walking slowly across the
- 25:07Brooklyn Bridge. That's a great shot.
- 25:10Yeah. On the top of it.
- 25:11Which is even cooler. It's like that's well First off,
- 25:14Polchi explain how they got I I want to see how they got I would
- 25:19love to know the explanation there.
- 25:21How do? They they got there because
- 25:25they're New York has infested with them because it comes from
- 25:29the cop being attacked on the boat and then attacking.
- 25:32On top of the bridge. Oh, oh, it's a pedestrian
- 25:35walkway, I thought. The top of it is.
- 25:40There's some bridge that has like a it's a pedestrian walkway
- 25:43on the on the top. Oh, that's terrifying.
- 25:46Yeah, it's like that. You.
- 25:47Ain't catching me doing that shit.
- 25:51I've seen that movie. I just watched that movie.
- 25:53I'm not going on there. I think it's safe.
- 25:58I'm not. I'm not arguing bridge safety
- 26:00with you. I'm not doing it.
- 26:03I wouldn't go there if there's all those zombies walking across
- 26:05there going to Manhattan to kill everybody.
- 26:08Hell no, that's Zombie from our good buddy Lucio Folchi.
- 26:14Again, Slow burn. Starts out a bit of a mystery,
- 26:17devolves into a bit of voodoo talk mixed with like an
- 26:21adventure looking for a missing father that leads to bigger
- 26:25crazier things that I think you should all experience and it is
- 26:29a zombie flick through and through that I I do believe is
- 26:32important to the current zombie movie scene.
- 26:36I think any director worth their grain who is going to make
- 26:40anything related to zombies references This Night of the
- 26:45Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and just these are the
- 26:49cornerstones right here, and this is definitely one of them.
- 26:52Even if I believe the marketing was a bit piggybackish for me,
- 26:56I'm going to get a fucking five out of five.
- 27:00This is a perfect. Zombie Flake.
- 27:02Wow. Yes.
- 27:06I'm going to say 3.5 out of five.
- 27:10Holy shit. Because I liked it, It was good.
- 27:14I'd recommend it to people. Well, no, I'll bring I'll bump
- 27:18that to a four because it was it was it was a good idea about
- 27:22like where the zombies come from.
- 27:23Yeah, I love a like a a chance happening situation that sparks
- 27:31a whole other thing. Yeah, pretty good all.
- 27:37Right, I'll give this a good O 4 out of five as well.
- 27:42It's a super, super solid flick. For the first time seeing it,
- 27:48it's probably like, I'd probably, yeah, rate this top
- 27:53five zombie films. Ah, very good.
- 27:56Where does this land with your list in zombie films?
- 27:59Does it land up high or where? Yeah, I'd put it pretty high.
- 28:04Like a lot of zombie films are kind of they're just, they're
- 28:11just more zombie movies. I think it's a bit played out
- 28:15now, but I like, I like this one.
- 28:18I thought it was a cool, cool idea.
- 28:22Awesome, awesome, awesome and. Awesome, we can all watch zombie
- 28:27three also on screen box. Oh shit.
- 28:31Rolling right into it. Rolling right into it.
- 28:34Could do it. Boys, we're getting ever closer
- 28:37to episode. What?
- 28:4152. 52 which means almost a full what?
- 28:46Year. Year of doing it came from
- 28:50Scream Box. We have a lot of lot to discuss
- 28:56about the show's future, which you guys keep hearing us talk
- 28:59about. But with recent events today,
- 29:04that discussion has been amplified and we will be
- 29:09progressing us a bit further. We're going to be trying to nail
- 29:11some shit down. No problems or anything like
- 29:13that. But just with certain things I
- 29:15was like, yeah, well, it's time. So we're going to be the show is
- 29:19not done by a long shot. That's not what we're saying.
- 29:22But we have a lot to discuss, a lot to change, and it's going to
- 29:26be a good change because it's not really going to affect the
- 29:29show you listen to. It's just going to be a Pretty
- 29:32Little change. So stay tuned for that.
