- 0:08Speaker 2: at the moment, but we have recorded a summer series
- 0:11Speaker 2: that we're very excited about.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Cocktail.
- 0:13Speaker 4: Please, can you rub some oil on my back?
- 0:18Speaker 3: Get the bullboard to do that.
- 0:20Speaker 2: So those are all orders for me to go and fulfill.
- 0:22Speaker 2: By the way, so I should jump off this mic
- 0:23Speaker 2: and go and look after the women. But we've got
- 0:26Speaker 2: an amazing lineup of guests and each week we talk
- 0:28Speaker 2: to a different guest. We're very excited people who you
- 0:31Speaker 2: will know from netball and they've come in and had
- 0:34Speaker 2: just some really fabulous fun chats with us. So this
- 0:36Speaker 2: is our summer series. We hope you enjoy it.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Enjoy guys, happy summer.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to the No Dribble Summer Series. You know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: we're not really here, we're on holiday, but we have
- 1:00Speaker 2: had some amazing conversations before we went on holidays with
- 1:04Speaker 2: some amazing people and today is no different.
- 1:06Speaker 4: We have a fantastic guest.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm Carolyn Swindell and I'm in studio with cath Cox
- 1:12Speaker 2: and far North Coast of New South Wales is the boss.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Liz Elis lizz Ellis.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And we also have a mystery guest who will not
- 1:20Speaker 2: reveal their identity at the moment. Kath has the gimp
- 1:23Speaker 2: mask on.
- 1:25Speaker 3: We will be doing this the way we always do it.
- 1:27Speaker 2: She will be guessing who we have been lucky enough
- 1:30Speaker 2: to get with us today. So cat Lady, here we go.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And honestly, I feel like this conversation will allow some
- 1:38Speaker 2: wrongs to be righted. Okay, we're going to There's been
- 1:41Speaker 2: some grief and today we will right those wrongs. Yeah, Okay.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Our mystery guest is one hundred and seventy five centimeters.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Tall mid quarter. Oh God.
- 1:54Speaker 2: When our mystery guest was born, the song that was
- 1:58Speaker 2: number one in Australia was right, said Fred's really only
- 2:02Speaker 2: song right, I'm too sexy? So what do you think?
- 2:07Speaker 3: What's way? Way after I was born?
- 2:11Speaker 2: That is correct? Nineteen ninety one. Our mystery guest is
- 2:15Speaker 2: a Sagittarius.
- 2:17Speaker 3: They help.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Our mystery guest started her Son Corps super netball career
- 2:24Speaker 2: with the Swifts.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Okay, should know this one.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You should should then hit a bit of stormy weather,
- 2:34Speaker 2: which continues to this.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Very day under lightning.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Our mystery guest has appeared in five successive Grand Final squads.
- 2:45Speaker 2: That's pretty good, I reckon, just you know, my expert opinion,
- 2:50Speaker 2: not getting it.
- 2:51Speaker 6: Not there yet.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Melder comes to mind, but she's not one seventy something.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Our mystery guest started netball at the age of six.
- 2:59Speaker 2: That's cute, all right, this one? For God's sake? Can
- 3:03Speaker 2: you our mystery guest? Her drink of choice is probably
- 3:08Speaker 2: a little bit, I'll advised if I'm honest. Her mystery
- 3:10Speaker 2: choice is a tequila shot.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Oh god, well, there's only one person crazy enough to
- 3:15Speaker 3: do that that I know of. It's got to be
- 3:17Speaker 3: Steph fret Well.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It is Steph Fretwell. Welcome to the podcast.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Do you see what I did there? I said, fret Well,
- 3:27Speaker 3: you did.
- 3:27Speaker 5: So.
- 3:27Speaker 3: May I please start with a very broad and big
- 3:31Speaker 3: apology for pro How long have you been married? Has
- 3:35Speaker 3: it only been this season that I've been starting?
- 3:37Speaker 6: One year?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, it's very hard when people get married. I
- 3:42Speaker 3: kind of wish you'd gone the double banger, the double barrel,
- 3:45Speaker 3: because then it's a lot easier if you fuck it
- 3:47Speaker 3: up to just kind of add in the second name
- 3:49Speaker 3: after the facts.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Would you have gone, would fret well or fret well
- 3:52Speaker 2: would if you were going.
- 3:53Speaker 6: To I wanted to combine them to make it wood well.
- 3:56Speaker 3: But wood Well.
- 3:58Speaker 2: That would have worked well for you.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah, so Steph apologies. And I don't know if you've seen,
- 4:03Speaker 3: but in the last couple of games I did Lightning games,
- 4:05Speaker 3: I actually had a big freat well written in black
- 4:08Speaker 3: tex stuff on top of the TV monitor, so I
- 4:11Speaker 3: would remind myself it's hard work. Don't get I'm getting
- 4:15Speaker 3: their apologies.
- 4:16Speaker 6: It doesn't bother me. I'm fine. I still call Gretle
- 4:18Speaker 6: but Gretel tippets.
- 4:19Speaker 3: So thank you Reli. That makes me feel better.
- 4:23Speaker 2: There are a lot of people on Facebook who have
- 4:25Speaker 2: a huge problem with kath getting it wrong.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So yeah, so sorry everybody. Just a general statement, Now
- 4:31Speaker 3: are we done with her? Was it just to say sorry, Well,
- 4:34Speaker 3: we're not done.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I feel like she's got some wisdom to impart and
- 4:38Speaker 2: we need to find out how she takes a steak
- 4:40Speaker 2: is one of one of the things. But Liz will
- 4:42Speaker 2: ask that question in her own good time.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Start with something that we've been talking about a bit.
- 4:47Speaker 3: When it comes to the diamonds, what is ted ball?
- 4:51Speaker 6: Good question, Oh, Okay. Ted bull is fun.
- 4:55Speaker 7: It is like a combination of handball andolleyball. And how
- 5:02Speaker 7: do you think there's like a river in the middle.
- 5:04Speaker 7: You played across a third and you have like three
- 5:07Speaker 7: hits and then it's going to go over the river.
- 5:10Speaker 7: The first bit can bounce, but then it goes and
- 5:12Speaker 7: then you've got to hit it up. It's honestly, it
- 5:14Speaker 7: gets so competitive. When I was in the diamonds, the
- 5:18Speaker 7: oldies always won.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Is that your team is it old versus young?
- 5:22Speaker 7: Yeah, oldies versus youngies, and the youngies just they would capitulate.
- 5:26Speaker 7: They would just get angry at each other and it
- 5:28Speaker 7: would just be fun to be on the other side them.
- 5:32Speaker 4: The oldest have because we talked this year about you know,
- 5:35Speaker 4: winning grand finals and how you can be all youthful
- 5:38Speaker 4: and enthusiastic. But it's the oldest with the brains that
- 5:40Speaker 4: tend to do things like what are the oldest having
- 5:42Speaker 4: ted ball? That got your all home?
- 5:44Speaker 6: What do we have well skill? Some of the some
- 5:48Speaker 6: of the younger ones didn't have the skill at times, but.
- 5:54Speaker 7: Ledge they would just get I don't know what they did.
- 5:57Speaker 7: They were just not They would just turn on each
- 5:59Speaker 7: other at times. And we stayed in our lane. We
- 6:03Speaker 7: wouldn't like if the ball was coming towards one of us,
- 6:06Speaker 7: you wouldn't cut someone else off to try and get
- 6:08Speaker 7: the glory shot. Some of the youngies used to do that.
- 6:11Speaker 7: And then Cara Conan was my favorite because she was
- 6:13Speaker 7: a youngie and she gets very angry when she doesn't win.
- 6:17Speaker 7: So I if I wasn't a part of it, I
- 6:19Speaker 7: used to just like watching her get really angry.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Now is there a cut off age when you talk
- 6:26Speaker 3: about young and oldie? It's like if you have a birthday,
- 6:28Speaker 3: do you get a big Oh, you can come over
- 6:30Speaker 3: to our side? Well, how does that work?
- 6:32Speaker 6: It's just split. So it's just this.
- 6:34Speaker 7: It was the six oldest and then the six youngest
- 6:37Speaker 7: in the in the group. So yeah, some people I
- 6:40Speaker 7: don't know who. Once Ash and I left, I don't
- 6:43Speaker 7: know who's jumped up.
- 6:45Speaker 4: I don't know. Catherine should know that she's a commentator.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Don't you have everyone's stay to birth tattooed in your head?
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:50Speaker 2: No, not no, she can't get any more tattoos until
- 6:54Speaker 2: she gets rid of Hey stiff.
- 6:57Speaker 4: What's Kara Kana like when she's angry? Does she still
- 6:59Speaker 4: have perfect high performance hair and a lovely smile.
- 7:02Speaker 6: Of course she does. She's always very well put together.
- 7:05Speaker 6: There's just a lot it's all over her face.
- 7:07Speaker 7: Like when she plays, she's just very but you can
- 7:11Speaker 7: just read it all over her face, and she does.
- 7:13Speaker 6: She can like cool people out.
- 7:17Speaker 7: She will just be like she's we play it at
- 7:20Speaker 7: Lightning as well, and she'll call some of the girls
- 7:23Speaker 7: out and be.
- 7:23Speaker 6: Like what are you doing? Or like switch in.
- 7:25Speaker 7: But yeah, she's still her hair's always perfect. I don't
- 7:27Speaker 7: think she ever rocks up to training and doesn't have
- 7:29Speaker 7: perfect hair.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I could totally see that about Kara Kanna, and that's fascinating.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I wouldn't want her to be mad at me. No, no,
- 7:36Speaker 3: she stches me right, but she wouldn't murder you. Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 3: So ted balls are made up game?
- 7:41Speaker 4: Then is it?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Have you guys? Just is this evolved?
- 7:43Speaker 2: Everything's a made up game?
- 7:45Speaker 7: Well, it was Palmi and Jamie brought it in and
- 7:48Speaker 7: I think it started at Giants.
- 7:50Speaker 6: I'm not sure if.
- 7:52Speaker 7: The boys played it there, but they bought it in
- 7:55Speaker 7: the Diamonds and then I think from there all the clubs.
- 7:58Speaker 6: I don't know what club doesn't play it now.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I know because I watched a video that Jamie Lee
- 8:03Speaker 2: Price did trying to understand ted Bull. I didn't understand
- 8:05Speaker 2: it any better at the end of the video than
- 8:07Speaker 2: I did at the beginning of the video, but giants
- 8:09Speaker 2: got it from cricket. I think, you know, no such thing.
- 8:13Speaker 4: As an original idea.
- 8:15Speaker 3: So every time we have a guest, we're asking them
- 8:17Speaker 3: about their off seasons, because we know you're heavily into preseason.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Now you're not far away from starting the new netball season,
- 8:25Speaker 3: and what was your off season like? Did you enjoy yourself?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Is it nice not to be playing the internationals?
- 8:30Speaker 7: I still get foemo, but it is being able to,
- 8:33Speaker 7: like I've moved to been able to watch a game
- 8:37Speaker 7: and not feel like I'm so involved in it, which
- 8:40Speaker 7: was really nice. I actually watched the last Test when
- 8:44Speaker 7: oh no, the England Test having an espresso Martini, so
- 8:48Speaker 7: that was nice.
- 8:51Speaker 6: And yeah, no, but it was great. My off season
- 8:53Speaker 6: was a lot of fun.
- 8:53Speaker 7: I was able to do a few little trips with
- 8:55Speaker 7: my husband, went over to like Stradbroke, Ireland, had a
- 8:59Speaker 7: wedding down and Byron, and then I actually went over
- 9:01Speaker 7: to Singapore and spent some time in Singapore with netball
- 9:05Speaker 7: Singapore at one of their Nations Cup, which was really
- 9:08Speaker 7: cool to see some different nations play. So I was
- 9:11Speaker 7: able to see Kenya, Singapore, the UAE. I think Ireland
- 9:15Speaker 7: was there, so that was actually really cool.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Did you do some coaching or anything there or were
- 9:19Speaker 4: you observing.
- 9:20Speaker 7: I did a little bit of coaching with the seventeens
- 9:24Speaker 7: and then the twenty one Singapore, but other than that,
- 9:27Speaker 7: I just had to appear at the tournament and I
- 9:30Speaker 7: got to experience Singapore.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Which is it's a cool little country.
- 9:34Speaker 2: It's great, great food too.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yes, Hey, has pre season training been any easier by
- 9:40Speaker 3: the fact that you haven't had the internationals, because we
- 9:43Speaker 3: know pre season sucks the big ones. But has it
- 9:46Speaker 3: been easier because you've had more downtime or is it
- 9:48Speaker 3: harder to get yourself back into it?
- 9:50Speaker 7: Pre season's always hell for me, like I often say,
- 9:53Speaker 7: when I retire and no one's going to talk about
- 9:56Speaker 7: my absolute athletic ability, like it's always going to in
- 10:00Speaker 7: my brain. So pre season's always really hard for me.
- 10:03Speaker 7: I think the break has it allowed my body to rest,
- 10:08Speaker 7: Like I don't have the world's best knees, still had
- 10:10Speaker 7: a little bit of a grumbly ankle.
- 10:12Speaker 6: From Round two last year.
- 10:14Speaker 7: So my body felt the best it was able to
- 10:16Speaker 7: because I wasn't doing twelve months of the year. But
- 10:19Speaker 7: it's always help. I'm always down the back in conditioning,
- 10:23Speaker 7: but that's all right. It always hurts, but yeah, it's
- 10:26Speaker 7: been better for my body to have that break.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Just on the back of that, you're talking about your
- 10:32Speaker 2: netball brain. I saw an interview with you, a postmatch interview,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and it might have been when you guys were tipped
- 10:39Speaker 2: out of the finals in this song cale and you
- 10:43Speaker 2: talking about your responsibility to help the newer players learn
- 10:47Speaker 2: how to process this incredible disappointment. It was very clear
- 10:50Speaker 2: that you were very upset yourself. It may have been
- 10:54Speaker 2: another game, but I think it was that one. Can
- 10:56Speaker 2: you talk a little bit about that, like how do
- 10:58Speaker 2: you manage that scene of helping the younger players or
- 11:02Speaker 2: the less experienced players on a day to day basis
- 11:05Speaker 2: versus letting them make their mistakes, learn from watching, et cetera.
- 11:12Speaker 7: I do think people I had a few questions about,
- 11:15Speaker 7: like are you retiring?
- 11:16Speaker 6: Is that why you're so upset? I was like, oh, no,
- 11:19Speaker 6: signed a two year deal. I'll be back next year.
- 11:21Speaker 4: I'm just a store loser. Yeah, that's okay.
- 11:24Speaker 6: I don't like losing.
- 11:25Speaker 7: H I think for that game it was against the Fever,
- 11:28Speaker 7: I just felt like I didn't play the game that
- 11:30Speaker 7: I was supposed to play. And I take a lot
- 11:31Speaker 7: of pride in making sure that I perform when you're
- 11:34Speaker 7: a captain and when you're a senior.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Player of the group.
- 11:37Speaker 7: I felt really disappointed in my own performance and I
- 11:42Speaker 7: people can often think I'm not emotional. I'm a bit deadpan.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Nothing kind of phases me. But I wanted to show
- 11:50Speaker 7: I think for the younger players that like I genuinely
- 11:53Speaker 7: do care and I really want to win, and for them.
- 11:56Speaker 6: To be able to see it. It doesn't matter if it's
- 11:58Speaker 6: your first year, if it's your tenth year.
- 12:00Speaker 7: Like those losses hurt just as bad, but being able
- 12:04Speaker 7: to process it and I can't dwell on it for
- 12:06Speaker 7: days on end, we went back into the change room.
- 12:08Speaker 6: We had an honest conversation. I owned what I had
- 12:10Speaker 6: to own.
- 12:11Speaker 7: Your shooting percentage as a shooter, like it's got to
- 12:14Speaker 7: be up there, and you take pride in being able
- 12:17Speaker 7: to do that. And that's a part of why I
- 12:19Speaker 7: was upset that we also didn't win and we weren't
- 12:22Speaker 7: able to keep our season going. But that I didn't
- 12:24Speaker 7: feel like I performed the way that I should perform
- 12:27Speaker 7: to help the team win. So that was probably my
- 12:29Speaker 7: part in that. But yeah, not retiring, that was one
- 12:33Speaker 7: they kept popping on.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Not domestically. We know you've had so much success with
- 12:39Speaker 3: the Diamonds, but and Carolyn just mentioned before then five
- 12:43Speaker 3: consecutive Grand Final appearances domestically. What's been the biggest achievement
- 12:48Speaker 3: for you domestically? Which year? If one can stand out.
- 12:52Speaker 7: It would be twenty eighteen because we were written off
- 12:56Speaker 7: right at the start.
- 12:57Speaker 6: I think we lost the first three.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Or three, Yeah, you did.
- 13:01Speaker 7: Three games, and it was when the bonus points system
- 13:04Speaker 7: was in and that was pretty much how we made finals.
- 13:07Speaker 7: I think our last round was actually against the Vixens
- 13:10Speaker 7: and we got the first two bonus points, which meant
- 13:13Speaker 7: we got into finals. But if Vixen's had beaten us,
- 13:17Speaker 7: they actually wouldn't have made fight as we would.
- 13:19Speaker 6: Have, but they would have had more wins.
- 13:21Speaker 7: So bonus points was really how we ended up getting
- 13:24Speaker 7: in and just took the long way there, like to
- 13:26Speaker 7: play in front of that Perth crowd. It is intimidating
- 13:31Speaker 7: and we were pretty averaging the first half. I had
- 13:34Speaker 7: a dramatic hit the pole and then like that moment
- 13:38Speaker 7: as well, and then to come out in the second
- 13:40Speaker 7: half and everything just started to click for us and
- 13:43Speaker 7: they had a fever, had a formidable team. Then to
- 13:47Speaker 7: win that I think was it was a really cool
- 13:51Speaker 7: and I still remember the first person on who I harked.
- 13:53Speaker 7: I remember running at Kelsey in those moments, So I
- 13:56Speaker 7: would say domestically it would have been that twenty eighteen Grand.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Final because that was a back to back too, wasn't it.
- 14:01Speaker 6: Yeah? Back to back? Yeah, and yeah, we were definitely
- 14:04Speaker 6: written off at the start of the year. But I
- 14:06Speaker 6: like that. I'm a Queenslander. I love being the underdog.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Isn't it crazy the shit that Nepple's done, Like you
- 14:11Speaker 3: forget we talked about crazy rules we've had before, about
- 14:14Speaker 3: walking penalties in a direct line across the court, We've
- 14:17Speaker 3: had those bonus points. I'd completely forgot about this.
- 14:21Speaker 1: We commentated it right, Yeah, But I actually, really I
- 14:24Speaker 1: really loved the bonus points because it kept, as you say,
- 14:27Speaker 1: it kept the season interesting for so much longer and
- 14:30Speaker 1: even games.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Because there wasn't the super shot then, so if a
- 14:34Speaker 3: game was a blowout, you could still get excited about
- 14:36Speaker 3: the last quarter because there was potentially bonus points on off.
- 14:39Speaker 7: Oh my god, yeah it was even There was a
- 14:41Speaker 7: game that year we were playing Adelaide and we needed
- 14:45Speaker 7: all the bonus points and Knowles rolled our whole team
- 14:48Speaker 7: in the last quarter, and I actually remember thinking, oh,
- 14:52Speaker 7: this could be bad, but that's I think Knowles is great.
- 14:55Speaker 7: I love her for it is she always gave you confidence.
- 14:58Speaker 7: And then we got the bonus point in that last quarter,
- 15:00Speaker 7: Like I always loved that. But I remember in that
- 15:02Speaker 7: moment being like, you've got to play every quarter, You've
- 15:05Speaker 7: got to get every bonus point.
- 15:06Speaker 6: But love her.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Is she one of the greatest coaches you've ever had?
- 15:10Speaker 6: She I always say for me, she's been the greatest
- 15:12Speaker 6: coach I've ever had. I wouldn't be the.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Player with this is Noline Tarua.
- 15:15Speaker 6: Yeah I.
- 15:17Speaker 7: Dame Norlean she would hate that, I think, but yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 7: I wouldn't be the player that I am without having her.
- 15:24Speaker 6: In my third year.
- 15:25Speaker 4: One of the things that I've heard people or heard
- 15:27Speaker 4: someone say about her from a high performance point of view,
- 15:29Speaker 4: and this is someone who doesn't work in netball, made
- 15:32Speaker 4: the point about her that she is one of the
- 15:34Speaker 4: best coaches that he had seen for understanding a high
- 15:37Speaker 4: performance environment. Is that what does that mean from a
- 15:40Speaker 4: player's point of view.
- 15:43Speaker 6: I think I've said this story once.
- 15:44Speaker 7: I think I remember she wasn't the New Zealand coach
- 15:47Speaker 7: at that time, but I came in and I had
- 15:50Speaker 7: iopp meeting like individual planning with Lisa Alexander.
- 15:54Speaker 6: And everyone, and they sung my praises.
- 15:56Speaker 7: At that point, and I remember Nol then said like
- 16:01Speaker 7: not slammed me, but kind of was just like, oh,
- 16:03Speaker 7: she needs to stop saying things. She needs to do things.
- 16:06Speaker 7: I remember sitting there being like, oh my God, like,
- 16:08Speaker 7: does this lady want me on her team? But what
- 16:11Speaker 7: I think she was really really great at is she
- 16:14Speaker 7: was great at evoking emotion and knowing how to hit
- 16:18Speaker 7: you right and then she would get the reaction what
- 16:21Speaker 7: she needed after. I remember going home and I was
- 16:23Speaker 7: living with Langman at that point, Laura Langman, and she goes,
- 16:26Speaker 7: she's doing it for a reason. And she was always
- 16:29Speaker 7: really great for us at pushing us physically, mentally, prepping
- 16:33Speaker 7: us in training that when you were walked out on
- 16:36Speaker 7: a game. You never felt out of control because everything
- 16:39Speaker 7: she had done in her planning and everything in trainings
- 16:44Speaker 7: prepped you for every single game. And I think she
- 16:46Speaker 7: was the first time she came over to Australia and
- 16:49Speaker 7: she'd never had access to people or a team for
- 16:53Speaker 7: multiplet like for a full week, because in New Zealand
- 16:56Speaker 7: she would have players fly in and they might train
- 16:58Speaker 7: for four days and then they would go.
- 17:00Speaker 6: So for her getting into this.
- 17:02Speaker 7: High performance over here, she was so good at like
- 17:06Speaker 7: planning us, but yeah, physically mentally pushing us far enough
- 17:10Speaker 7: and then she'd pull you back and yeah, prepped me
- 17:13Speaker 7: for everything. Yeah, the career that I've had, I'd cred
- 17:15Speaker 7: a big part to that, knowles.
- 17:17Speaker 4: So how hard was it then when she which is
- 17:19Speaker 4: what high praise, right, that's amazing praise for a coach,
- 17:23Speaker 4: Then how hard it was? Was it then? When you
- 17:25Speaker 4: were playing for the Diamonds and she was coaching the opposition,
- 17:28Speaker 4: that must have been so difficult.
- 17:31Speaker 7: It was hard because I probably knew how well she
- 17:34Speaker 7: was going to prep them for.
- 17:37Speaker 3: That, and I'm playing you.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Yeah, she knew my game inside out.
- 17:42Speaker 7: And I remember after a Townsville game we played, it
- 17:45Speaker 7: was a con Cup and we played in Townsville and
- 17:48Speaker 7: she came over to me and she was like she.
- 17:52Speaker 6: Kind of was just like, oh, why did you play
- 17:53Speaker 6: like that?
- 17:54Speaker 7: And I was like, well, you taught me, Like I'm
- 17:56Speaker 7: playing the exact way that you're telling me.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Yeah, So it was hard.
- 18:01Speaker 7: It was even hard, I guess for me in that
- 18:04Speaker 7: twenty nineteen season, we had an incredible season with Lightning
- 18:07Speaker 7: unfortunately didn't get the win, but even with Laura Langman
- 18:10Speaker 7: like going over to World Cup. But also I can
- 18:13Speaker 7: put that aside and be so happy because I know
- 18:16Speaker 7: the journey that Knowles took to be even be the
- 18:18Speaker 7: Ferns coach, having to come over here and not getting
- 18:21Speaker 7: the job originally but then for them to realize she
- 18:24Speaker 7: is the best person for the job, and Langman never
- 18:27Speaker 7: actually having a World Cup. So I could take even
- 18:31Speaker 7: though it hurt me very badly, I could be really
- 18:34Speaker 7: happy for them because I know the journey they went
- 18:36Speaker 7: on and it's not easy being in a professional sport
- 18:38Speaker 7: to win anything.
- 18:38Speaker 3: That might be the last one. I how.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So, Steph, one of the things we have to ask
- 18:46Speaker 2: you to do is jump in Cox's hot box for
- 18:48Speaker 2: a few minutes.
- 18:49Speaker 3: It's as god awful as it, Saunds pro we do that?
- 18:52Speaker 4: Can I just ask one more question of Steph that's
- 18:54Speaker 4: a bit more serious network question that we can go
- 18:55Speaker 4: hot box and all the stupidity. Steph. The one thing
- 18:58Speaker 4: that I find intriguing is with you is that your career,
- 19:01Speaker 4: in your career, you've done everything right. You won World Cups,
- 19:03Speaker 4: you won super Netball titles, You've been an out and
- 19:06Speaker 4: out superstar, and then you retire from the Diamonds and
- 19:10Speaker 4: you're you know, you signed for another year, but you
- 19:14Speaker 4: could absolutely go on because you're still playing so well.
- 19:16Speaker 4: But given you've had all this success, what is it
- 19:19Speaker 4: that drives you? What's driving you in this preseason premiership?
- 19:23Speaker 7: Definitely for the Lightning is to put us back where
- 19:26Speaker 7: we were when we first came into this league. When
- 19:30Speaker 7: Liz and Courtney first came to our club. I asked him,
- 19:35Speaker 7: I was like, what do you think of us? And
- 19:37Speaker 7: she said, you're the nice team and I was like,
- 19:39Speaker 7: I don't want to be the nice team.
- 19:41Speaker 6: I want to be the team that you fear to
- 19:44Speaker 6: come and play up against.
- 19:45Speaker 7: And we've hit rock Baldom back in twenty twenty two,
- 19:48Speaker 7: Wooden Spoon missed out on finals and the following year
- 19:53Speaker 7: and then last year we scraped into finals like we
- 19:56Speaker 7: still only won six games. For me, it's a PREMI
- 20:00Speaker 7: but also making the club and when people want to
- 20:04Speaker 7: play us, they fear us, and I think fever have that.
- 20:08Speaker 7: I think or even when you go up against sorry,
- 20:10Speaker 7: the Adelaide Thunderber. It's like when you go up against Adelaide,
- 20:12Speaker 7: I know when I prep for that, it's my favorite
- 20:14Speaker 7: team to play because I've got to use my brain
- 20:17Speaker 7: to beat them, to beat that defense end. But you
- 20:20Speaker 7: fear coming up against them. And that's where I want
- 20:22Speaker 7: Lightning to.
- 20:23Speaker 6: Be back at and of course to put another premiership,
- 20:27Speaker 6: to have a third premiership at the club.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Steph, How do you do that though? Because obviously a
- 20:32Speaker 3: big chunker that is winning because it's that intimidation on court,
- 20:34Speaker 3: But clearly there's a persona that you want your team
- 20:37Speaker 3: to also develop a little So how do you do
- 20:40Speaker 3: that as a leader? How do you get that out
- 20:42Speaker 3: of your players? Oh?
- 20:43Speaker 6: Great question? You put that one on this one.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Why are you whipping them before every training session? What's happening?
- 20:49Speaker 7: I'm I'm definitely someone I see something, I say it,
- 20:53Speaker 7: I don't you know, if we're mucking around and there's
- 20:56Speaker 7: a course of time and a place where you have
- 20:58Speaker 7: your laughs. And I'm still someone that loves to have
- 21:00Speaker 7: a laugh. But when we train, we train and we're
- 21:02Speaker 7: up against each other, and my favorite training sessions are
- 21:06Speaker 7: actually the ones where attackers and defenders are going against
- 21:09Speaker 7: each other and as you can feel the tension, you
- 21:11Speaker 7: can feel it like defenders have the upper hand and
- 21:14Speaker 7: then the attackers come in and there's like, oh this tension.
- 21:17Speaker 7: That is what I think you have to create at
- 21:21Speaker 7: your training Sessionswise, when you go out, you get hit
- 21:25Speaker 7: and then you're kind of like you don't experience it,
- 21:27Speaker 7: but it is this element like I'm never going to
- 21:30Speaker 7: probably be the person. I don't want to be arrogant
- 21:32Speaker 7: or cocky and that, but there is the way we play.
- 21:35Speaker 7: The hardness in the way that we play is what
- 21:38Speaker 7: I want our club to be known for, and I
- 21:40Speaker 7: want our club to also be known for. I think
- 21:42Speaker 7: probably the few seasons before, if you get a lead
- 21:44Speaker 7: on us, oh you can have them.
- 21:47Speaker 6: You'll have them.
- 21:47Speaker 7: Like we've lost many games by twenty plus because we
- 21:50Speaker 7: didn't have that resilience at a time to be able
- 21:54Speaker 7: to grind those games back, and I think the last
- 21:57Speaker 7: two seasons you've been able to see us do that
- 22:00Speaker 7: probably as well. One of the things I have said
- 22:02Speaker 7: is in the beginning of like when Lightning started, you
- 22:06Speaker 7: had close games and we would always win them. We
- 22:09Speaker 7: had a winning culture, and at the moment we've got
- 22:12Speaker 7: to get back to that because we've had a whole
- 22:14Speaker 7: bunch of close losses. And sometimes you can get a culture,
- 22:19Speaker 7: not a culture, you can just end up not knowing
- 22:21Speaker 7: how to win.
- 22:22Speaker 6: And that's the part that we have to shift.
- 22:24Speaker 7: Because we have the people, we've got the talent, but
- 22:27Speaker 7: we've got to get that little switch of turning one
- 22:31Speaker 7: goal losses to actually five goal wins.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Why now, Yeah, I want to come up there.
- 22:39Speaker 2: One thing I didn't I didn't do in the intro
- 22:42Speaker 2: and I feel bad about this, but if I had,
- 22:44Speaker 2: CATS would immediately have known. But you know, we've talked
- 22:47Speaker 2: a lot about your domestic career, but you've had an
- 22:48Speaker 2: extraordinary international career too, and you know, finish winning a
- 22:52Speaker 2: Network World Cup and then announcing your retirement from international
- 22:56Speaker 2: play in twenty twenty three, winning Comwealth Games gold medal.
- 22:59Speaker 2: So I just feel like for completeness, I needed to
- 23:01Speaker 2: mention that here. But if I'd said that, she would
- 23:03Speaker 2: have got you straight away, even before the tequila shot.
- 23:09Speaker 2: This is the part of the podcast where it gets
- 23:12Speaker 2: really hard for you. Step I've got to say you
- 23:14Speaker 2: are going to step into Coxies hot box.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Now, yep, And I've been exercising, so it's a little
- 23:19Speaker 3: hot than normal.
- 23:22Speaker 2: It's unpleasant in there, but it's over fairly quickly.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Yeah, so this is quick fire. She's like, what the
- 23:28Speaker 3: hell I signed up for quick fire questions? So it's
- 23:31Speaker 3: not as good awful as it does sound. Oh, let's
- 23:34Speaker 3: put it that way.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Yeah, but still put your protective equipment on.
- 23:36Speaker 6: Oh can I say the flip case? What's going on?
- 23:38Speaker 7: Cav?
- 23:43Speaker 3: What's wrong with that?
- 23:44Speaker 6: Okay, I don't see.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Did you think it was a flip phone?
- 23:47Speaker 7: No?
- 23:48Speaker 6: It's just like how do you answer it?
- 23:50Speaker 7: I always wonder about this, like do you pull it
- 23:52Speaker 7: out or do you answer it with the flip?
- 23:54Speaker 6: No?
- 23:54Speaker 3: I answer it with the flip I have to because
- 23:56Speaker 3: I don't take a wallet anywhere, and it's got the
- 23:57Speaker 3: cards I need and I've got an eight year old.
- 23:59Speaker 2: They drop no, So Steph, you're a gens or are you
- 24:02Speaker 2: an I don't actually know.
- 24:04Speaker 6: I never know in this, but.
- 24:05Speaker 2: You're calling kath on her boomer bullshit here, aren't you
- 24:08Speaker 2: like she's gen X? But look at that? It's like
- 24:11Speaker 2: I want to look like a boomer?
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, well what do I do?
- 24:13Speaker 1: Do?
- 24:13Speaker 3: I just take it out and then drop it and
- 24:15Speaker 3: break it and have to buy a new one all
- 24:16Speaker 3: the time. You're just going to cover the sister out.
- 24:19Speaker 3: What's happy to be?
- 24:21Speaker 2: You get a little case and it's like cards.
- 24:25Speaker 6: You can log you can put them on your phone.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Cat, Can I put my gym membership card on my phone?
- 24:31Speaker 2: Probably?
- 24:32Speaker 3: Okay, probably, I'm on it.
- 24:35Speaker 2: This is my favorite part of the podcast ever paid.
- 24:38Speaker 3: I thought I was meant to be doing quick fire
- 24:40Speaker 3: to her. What's happening? Okay? The first question? What's going
- 24:43Speaker 3: on with your phone? Okay? Are you ready for Coxies
- 24:52Speaker 3: hot box? All right? Coffee order?
- 24:55Speaker 6: Oh straight away? Oh? Skinny Cat small Summer or Winter?
- 25:00Speaker 3: Her Funny the Red Air again?
- 25:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I burned very easily up here. Funniest teammates Mahalia.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Tomato sauce, and the fridge are in the cupboard.
- 25:11Speaker 6: Fridge.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Favorite sport that's not netple afl Dream destination for a holiday.
- 25:19Speaker 6: Iceland have you been, No, I really want to go.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Did you see jess Anstis went there in the off season?
- 25:26Speaker 3: How do you do your photos? Jump on the grand people?
- 25:28Speaker 3: If you haven't?
- 25:29Speaker 4: Still I do. I do know someone who went there
- 25:31Speaker 4: recently and they went there for a week and they
- 25:33Speaker 4: got stuck in their hotel for a week because of
- 25:35Speaker 4: Okano started erupting and they couldn't go anywhere or two
- 25:38Speaker 4: a new things.
- 25:38Speaker 2: But that could happen in Bali or Hawaii.
- 25:41Speaker 4: The flip side is she did see York in a
- 25:43Speaker 4: record store, so.
- 25:45Speaker 3: She did see who? Oh yeah, I wouldn't even recognize
- 25:51Speaker 3: right anyway, activity you do on a plane to boredom?
- 25:55Speaker 6: Oh?
- 25:56Speaker 7: I actually love the diamonds doing this Stick Hero, which
- 25:59Speaker 7: is that you can I.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Shut so Stick Hero.
- 26:03Speaker 7: It's so ash Irvan showed us it and is like obsessive.
- 26:09Speaker 6: So you just have to I don't know.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Also it's an app.
- 26:12Speaker 7: Is pornographic steff no no, and you do like you've
- 26:17Speaker 7: got to get the little ninja across, but you can't
- 26:20Speaker 7: do it too long otherwise he falls off.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Okay, so that's an app. Do you do that for
- 26:26Speaker 3: a whole plane flight? Oh?
- 26:29Speaker 6: Try it? And it is like.
- 26:33Speaker 4: You's going to be like, oh're not saving I missed everything,
- 26:37Speaker 4: but really we'll know it's stick.
- 26:38Speaker 6: Hero.
- 26:41Speaker 3: I do enough useless things to waste time already. I
- 26:44Speaker 3: don't know that I should open.
- 26:45Speaker 2: That up just and you take quite a bit of
- 26:46Speaker 2: time on word.
- 26:47Speaker 3: I've noticed too well because I got it in three
- 26:49Speaker 3: the other day and you got it into and didn't
- 26:53Speaker 3: you have joy in telling us anyway? We've we've got
- 26:56Speaker 3: right off track. What are you binge watching right now?
- 27:01Speaker 6: Starting five?
- 27:02Speaker 3: Oh? What's it?
- 27:04Speaker 4: Let me get Yeah? Yeah, never heard of it.
- 27:09Speaker 6: It's the basketball one?
- 27:10Speaker 3: Is it like a real story?
- 27:12Speaker 7: It follows five NBA players. This does happen because when
- 27:16Speaker 7: my husband's home, I don't really get control of the TV.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Ah okay, yeah, I can get another TV if you
- 27:23Speaker 2: have to watch all that.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I was going to say, get another husbandmate.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Can I feel like you had an answer straight away
- 27:35Speaker 2: and now you're thinking I'm not sure I'm going to
- 27:37Speaker 2: say that.
- 27:37Speaker 6: No, I'm very neat. I am very neat. I would say, oh.
- 27:42Speaker 3: God, ash Urban, Oh okay, interesting. Do you have any ink?
- 27:47Speaker 3: Are you tattooed?
- 27:49Speaker 6: I do?
- 27:49Speaker 7: I have a little love heart on my finger. Nice
- 27:54Speaker 7: with my sisters, both my sisters, and then I have
- 27:57Speaker 7: I have a little lightning bolt underneath it underarm.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Was that the back of a premiership win?
- 28:04Speaker 7: No, so there was after the first premiership win a
- 28:07Speaker 7: few girls did go get the lightning bolt, but Kelsey,
- 28:10Speaker 7: Aerona Bass and I all went and got that after
- 28:14Speaker 7: the In the Christmas break of the first preseason.
- 28:17Speaker 3: What prompted that drinks, we were.
- 28:21Speaker 6: Just sitting there like we should get a tattoo, and
- 28:23Speaker 6: we're like, yeah, let's do that. We've got a little
- 28:26Speaker 6: lightning bolt.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yeah, because you were one of the first two players
- 28:29Speaker 2: signed to Lightning, won't you.
- 28:31Speaker 6: Yes, yes, fantastic.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I think she were the first, but you're the number
- 28:34Speaker 4: one signing.
- 28:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:36Speaker 7: I always feel uncomfortable saying it, but yes, because you're old.
- 28:42Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 28:42Speaker 7: I just feel like when I think, because everyone takes
- 28:45Speaker 7: the piss out of me for it.
- 28:47Speaker 6: Now because we're up to like number thirty.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Or whatever, you're the first, yeah, whatever.
- 28:52Speaker 6: Number one?
- 28:54Speaker 2: Yeah that Pip, that's right, And you know what, girls,
- 28:58Speaker 2: that's what we're all aiming for, right.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Remember they're just jealous, all right. Favorite music genre.
- 29:07Speaker 6: Country folk at the moment.
- 29:10Speaker 7: Country fus not like full it's probably just country, but
- 29:14Speaker 7: it's not that full twang country.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Like, yeah, are you alarmed? What people are into country?
- 29:22Speaker 2: What's going on in the netball world? Sun Corps Supernetball
- 29:25Speaker 2: has been infiltrated by Hillbillies?
- 29:27Speaker 3: Do you know? Not that long ago Carolyn told us
- 29:30Speaker 3: to search up cow What was it? Cow Tech?
- 29:33Speaker 6: No?
- 29:33Speaker 3: Cow Tech?
- 29:34Speaker 2: And what came on first when you searched no?
- 29:38Speaker 3: Which was great world? Okay, okay, last question this is
- 29:46Speaker 3: very important to Lizella's How do you like your steak cooked?
- 29:49Speaker 6: Medium, rare?
- 29:52Speaker 3: Okay? Elizabeth?
- 29:54Speaker 7: I have though I would have been medium well, and
- 29:58Speaker 7: then as I've gotten old, I've realized that that's terrible.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Because your denures couldn't hardcore.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I think there are a few of the younger players
- 30:10Speaker 2: who need your leadership in this space to really find example.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Are there are a lot that go for more than
- 30:17Speaker 6: a medium.
- 30:19Speaker 3: It's a very Sligery well to talk to her, How
- 30:23Speaker 3: does Nat have her steak? If Amy he's having hers
- 30:25Speaker 3: well done, Nat Sliger might be similar. You better get
- 30:28Speaker 3: onto that interest.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Look, I don't know if you realize this, but
- 30:32Speaker 4: it is the role of the older player to bring
- 30:34Speaker 4: the younger players along because it's a younger play thing
- 30:36Speaker 4: to go. I like my stake well done, or I
- 30:39Speaker 4: like to go and have carbonara and garlic bread and
- 30:42Speaker 4: you've got to actually expand the taste pretty good, zellous.
- 30:49Speaker 3: It's also about getting them off the udls, pre mixes,
- 30:52Speaker 3: whatever they're called, onto the nice wines. But I don't
- 30:55Speaker 3: think Steph is in the position to be that's casting
- 30:58Speaker 3: a specially know we get off that have a tequila.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Steph, how was your your hen's day starting with tequila shots.
- 31:07Speaker 6: Well, we went for a long lunch and that was lovely,
- 31:09Speaker 6: and then yeah, it all went very damn hill when
- 31:11Speaker 6: the tequila shots came out.
- 31:14Speaker 2: So you don't start with tequila shots. You don't go
- 31:17Speaker 2: out like, yeah, okay, this is a kind of yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 6: Like I like my wine.
- 31:22Speaker 7: I think I am getting older now that I think
- 31:24Speaker 7: something in red wine gives me headaches.
- 31:26Speaker 6: But that's fine, that's past point.
- 31:28Speaker 4: That's peri metopause, Steph. That's a worry for you.
- 31:33Speaker 7: Wonderful gin and tonics, Like I'll always go for a
- 31:40Speaker 7: gin and tonic and then yeah, as it gets on, I'm.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Like tequila shots. It's usually right.
- 31:46Speaker 3: And she's in bed about half an hour later, I
- 31:49Speaker 3: can always know that.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Really, oh god.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Mental night, don't go out with.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Well that's it.
- 31:57Speaker 3: You passed cox Is Hot Box and you survived. And
