- 0:12Hello, friends. It's shown here and it is the
- 0:1718th of May. It is Thursday.
- 0:19And did you know that today is international Museum day?
- 0:24Today is the day that people are encouraged to visit a museum.
- 0:27Now, I get it. Well, It's like notice I realize
- 0:32and you probably don't have time to get to museum.
- 0:34But at some point today, when you make yourself a cover and
- 0:38sit down for break, did you know that?
- 0:40You can actually visit some of the world's great museums
- 0:43online, if you just have a quick search for online Museum, tours
- 0:48for free, you will find some incredible things and maybe you
- 0:51could do that today. But you and I are going to do
- 0:54something even better because we are not going to go to a museum
- 0:58of artifacts. We are going to travel back in
- 1:01time to a story, which is alive with the spirit of the Living
- 1:05God inside you and me. Holy moly.
- 1:09How good is that today? We will continue to read the
- 1:12story of the Israelites making their way through the desert.
- 1:16And today, God shows them how on Earth.
- 1:20He's going to provide catering that this many hungry mouths
- 1:23when they are in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:26So get your stomach rumbling, ready to eat.
- 1:29Have some food as we go with the Israelites all the way back in
- 1:34time in Exodus chapter 16. Then the whole community of
- 1:49Israel set out from elim and journeyed Into the Wilderness of
- 1:53sin between elim and Mount Sinai.
- 1:57They arrived there on the 15th day of the second month.
- 2:00One month after leaving the land of Egypt there to the whole
- 2:04community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron if only
- 2:09the Lord had killed us back in Egypt.
- 2:11They moaned there. We sat around pots, filled with
- 2:15meat and ate all the bread we wanted.
- 2:18But now you have brought us into this Wilderness to starve us,
- 2:22all to death, then the Lord said to Moses, look, I'm going to
- 2:27rain down food from heaven. For you, each day, the people
- 2:32can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day.
- 2:37I will test them in this to see whether or not.
- 2:40They will follow my instructions on the sixth day.
- 2:44They will gather food and when they prepare it, they will be
- 2:47too. Twice as much as usual.
- 2:50So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel by evening,
- 2:55you will realize it was the Lord who brought you out of the land
- 2:58of Egypt in the morning. You will see the glory of the
- 3:02Lord, because he has heard your complaints, which are against
- 3:06him, not against us. What have we done that?
- 3:10You should complain about us, then Moses added.
- 3:14The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to
- 3:18satisfy you in the morning. For he has At all your
- 3:21complaints against him. What have we done?
- 3:24Yes. Your complaints are against the
- 3:26Lord, not against us. Then Moses said to Aaron
- 3:30announce this to the entire community of Israel, present
- 3:34yourselves before the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.
- 3:39And as Aaron spoke to the whole community of Israel, they looked
- 3:43out toward the Wilderness there. They could see the awesome glory
- 3:48of the Lord in the cloud, then. The Lord said to Moses, I have
- 3:53heard the Israelites complaints. Now tell them in the evening,
- 3:57you will have meat to eat. And in the morning, you will
- 4:01have all the bread you want. Then you will know that I am the
- 4:06Lord, your God. That evening, vast numbers of
- 4:10quail flew in and covered the camp.
- 4:14And the next morning the area around the camp was wet with
- 4:16Dew. When the do evaporated a flaky
- 4:21substance as fine as Frost blanketed the ground, the
- 4:25Israelites were puzzled when they saw it, what is it?
- 4:29They asked each other. They had no idea what it was and
- 4:32Moses told them. It is the food, the Lord has
- 4:35given you to eat. These are the Lord's
- 4:38instructions. Each household should gather as
- 4:41much as it needs. Pick up to Courts for each
- 4:44person in your tent. Said the people of Israel did as
- 4:48they were told some gathered a lot.
- 4:50Some only a little but when they measured it out, everyone had
- 4:55just enough. Those who gathered a lot had
- 4:58nothing left over and those who gathered only a little had
- 5:02enough, each family had just what it needed.
- 5:05Then Moses told him do not keep any of it until morning, but
- 5:10some of them didn't listen and kept it until morning.
- 5:14But by then it was full of maggots and had a terrible
- 5:17smell. Moses was very angry with them.
- 5:21After this, the people gathered the food morning by morning,
- 5:25each family, according to its need.
- 5:28And as the sun became hot, the flakes, they had not picked up
- 5:32melted and disappeared on the sixth day.
- 5:35They gathered twice as much as usual for Courts for each person
- 5:39instead of two. Then all the leaders of the
- 5:42community came and asked Moses for an explanation, he told them
- 5:47this is what the Lord commanded tomorrow will be a day of
- 5:50complete. Rest, a holy Sabbath day, set
- 5:54apart for the Lord. So bake or boil as much as you
- 5:57want today and set aside what is left for tomorrow.
- 6:01So they put some aside until morning.
- 6:04Just as Moses had commanded and in the morning the leftover food
- 6:08was wholesome and good without maggots or oh Moses said eat
- 6:13this food today for today, is a Sabbath day.
- 6:16Dedicated to the Lord, there will be no food on the ground
- 6:19today. You may gather the food for six
- 6:22days but the seventh day is the Sabbath.
- 6:25There will be no food on the ground that day.
- 6:28Some of the people went out anyway on the seventh day but
- 6:32they found no food. The Lord asked Moses, how long
- 6:37will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions?
- 6:41They must realize that the Sabbath is the Lord's gift to
- 6:44you. That is why he gives you a
- 6:46two-day Supply on the sixth day so there will be enough for two
- 6:50days on the Sabbath day. You must each.
- 6:53Stay in your place. Do not go out to pick up, food
- 6:57on the seventh day. So the people will not gather
- 7:00any food on the seventh day the Israelites called the food Munna
- 7:06and it was white like coriander seed and it tasted like honey
- 7:10wafers And then Moses said, this is what the Lord has commanded
- 7:15fill. The 2 quart, container with
- 7:17manner to preserve it for your descendants.
- 7:20Then later generations, will be able to see the food I gave you
- 7:24in the wilderness. When I set you free from Egypt,
- 7:29Moses said to Aaron, get a job and fill it with two quarts of
- 7:33manner, then put it in a sacred place before the Lord to
- 7:37preserve it for all future Generations.
- 7:40Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded Moses, he eventually
- 7:44placed it in the Ark of the Covenant in front of the stone
- 7:48tablets inscribed with the terms of the Covenant.
- 7:51So the people of Israel ate Manna for 40 years until they
- 7:55arrived at the land where they would settle.
- 7:58They ate Manna until they came to the border of the land of
- 8:01Canaan. The container used to measure
- 8:04the manor was an Omer which was one-tenth of an ephah IT held
- 8:09about to Quartz. Jesus.
- 8:21So often, we pray that you would give us our daily bread Here, we
- 8:27hear of you doing. Just that for your people.
- 8:30And thank you that you do give us our daily bread that you
- 8:34provide employment. For many of us, you provide an
- 8:38income, you provide, the means to feed ourselves, you give us
- 8:42bodies able to produce you. Give us communities able to
- 8:46support you. Give us a society's able to
- 8:49share Thank you, Lord, for the way that you provide for us,
- 8:55help us see every good gift as just that as a good gift from
- 9:00you. We are so grateful that you
- 9:05provide for us in so many different ways in a thousand
- 9:08ways that our minds Boggle with the warm sunshine, on our
- 9:12shoulders, with the friendships in our lives, with the love of
- 9:16our families. With the food in our bellies and
- 9:21the clothes on our back. We thank you, Lord.
- 9:24And it's in your name that we pray.
- 9:26Amen.
