- 0:00This is Laura Dierdahl with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:02podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:04Stephanie Everett, administrator of Montreal Bethel Home and
- 0:07chief executive officer of Montreal
- 0:09County Medical Center. Stephanie, it's a pleasure to
- 0:11have you on the podcast today.
- 0:13I am, it's a pleasure to be here.
- 0:16Fantastic. Well, I'm looking forward to our conversation
- 0:19and getting a sense of some of the
- 0:20great things that you have been doing over
- 0:22the last year as well as your perspective
- 0:24on the future. But before we dive in,
- 0:25can you tell us a little bit more
- 0:27about yourself, your background, and the organization?
- 0:31My name is Stephanie Everett. I have been
- 0:33with the Montreux County Health Center since 2013.
- 0:38I came in as the foundation director until
- 0:412013
- 0:42for the Montreal County Health Foundation.
- 0:44Six years ago, actually, in March, I then,
- 0:47took the classes ahead of time to become
- 0:49the administrator of the Montreal,
- 0:51Bethel Home, and I'm also then the CEO
- 0:54of the Montreal County Medical Center. Inside that
- 0:57campus, it's one attached campus.
- 0:59We are a 36 bed nursing home with
- 1:0210 basic care. We have 14 units of
- 1:05assisted living that is attached,
- 1:07to the nursing home
- 1:09along with being attached to an ER and
- 1:12an 11 bed critical access hospital and a
- 1:15rural health clinic. So, we are a total
- 1:19campus of,
- 1:20you know, continued care and it's all under
- 1:23one roof, which is lovely in North Dakota.
- 1:25We are an hour away from the Canadian
- 1:27border, so it gets a little chilly in
- 1:28the wintertime.
- 1:30So it's really nice to be able to
- 1:31offer all these services to our residents under
- 1:33one roof.
- 1:36That's amazing to hear. Now, when you think
- 1:38of the last year or so, what was
- 1:39the most important initiative you led? What did
- 1:41you do, and what were the result?
- 1:45We broke ground
- 1:47last July for a new nursing home facility
- 1:49that is still gonna be attached,
- 1:52and that is coming to fruition. We're going
- 1:54to be opening that up,
- 1:56in like a month and a half.
- 1:58And so, you know, you don't make money
- 2:00running a nursing home, but who's going to
- 2:01take care of your elderly as they age?
- 2:03And so I've been really working hard,
- 2:06to raise
- 2:08the money to build a new nursing home,
- 2:10have it be fully funded with grants and
- 2:12donations. And we, that reputation has come to
- 2:15pass. We have been able to raise the
- 2:17grants or raise the money, for grants and
- 2:19donations.
- 2:21And we did a market analysis
- 2:23with,
- 2:25Eide Bailly.
- 2:26And one of the things that we found
- 2:27was the service area population is going to
- 2:30be growing
- 2:31over the next
- 2:33five years
- 2:34for, anywhere between 70 to eighty five seventy
- 2:37years old to 85 is around 31%
- 2:40that we're going to see a growth in
- 2:41that elderly population.
- 2:43And so leading into the next question that
- 2:45you're going you know, that will be coming
- 2:47up is we are in a $53,000,000
- 2:51building project,
- 2:53like I said, with the new nursing home
- 2:54opening up in a month and a half,
- 2:56in a month and a half, and the
- 2:58last portion of the build out in 2027
- 3:02is more assisted living. And we have a
- 3:04waiting list of 32 people on that on
- 3:07that waiting list for assisted living.
- 3:11Wow. That's incredible to to know. I know
- 3:13this huge undertaking to build any new facilities,
- 3:15but especially a project that's so important to
- 3:17the community and,
- 3:19will really make an impact on the lives
- 3:21and and folks who are able to gain
- 3:22their services there.
- 3:24So I guess if we're digging a little
- 3:26bit deeper, where do you see some of
- 3:27those big priorities as well as headwinds when
- 3:29you're thinking of these big projects, expansion and
- 3:32ways that you want to continue to develop
- 3:34going forward?
- 3:38Not only are we going to be opening
- 3:39the new facility this spring and then continuing
- 3:42construction on the on the medical side into
- 3:45'27,
- 3:46we are actually going we are switching from
- 3:48Cerner to Epic
- 3:50in '26.
- 3:51So not only do we have this huge
- 3:52big building project going on that literally takes
- 3:55up the entire campus and both sides, the
- 3:58nursing home and the medical center side. My
- 4:00poor little medical center side is now diving
- 4:03into an an EHR,
- 4:06you know, a new EHR coming in October.
- 4:08So '26 is gonna be a really pivotal
- 4:10year for us with a lot of amazing
- 4:12growth.
- 4:15That's fantastic to hear and exciting. I know
- 4:17all of those things are a huge undertaking.
- 4:19So when you look at your executive team,
- 4:21what are you doing to make sure that,
- 4:23you're moving things forward operationally? How have you
- 4:26worked with them to design the vision of
- 4:27what you wanna be in the future? Can
- 4:29you take us a little bit more inside
- 4:31of, your your leadership team process and how
- 4:33you're going to continue to, keep the momentum
- 4:36going?
- 4:39You wanna keep them grounded.
- 4:41You wanna keep this the team focused with
- 4:43so much going on.
- 4:45I just had some of my one on
- 4:46ones. I try to be in front of
- 4:48them all the time. I try to have
- 4:49one on one conversations with them a lot,
- 4:51several times because they they talk
- 4:54more personally, you know, when you're with them
- 4:56rather than in their manager meetings and in
- 4:58the big groups and things like that. One
- 5:00of them that they have been saying is
- 5:02they feel disorganized because there's so much going
- 5:04on, like, so much going on.
- 5:07But then I'm always there for them to
- 5:08be able to help them.
- 5:11How do they grow more inside their leadership
- 5:14roles. You know, you want the right people
- 5:16in the seats.
- 5:17You wanna give them the power to grow
- 5:19into their positions. We do do a high
- 5:22road leadership.
- 5:23There is a leadership program that all of
- 5:25them can be a part of. Right now,
- 5:28we're in, Jane or, John Maxwell's High Road
- 5:31Leadership book. And the one thing that, you
- 5:33know, chapter eight is coming up next week,
- 5:35and the one item that I really
- 5:38stuck out to me reading this chapter was
- 5:40people would rather follow a leader who is
- 5:42always real than one who is always right.
- 5:45And I love,
- 5:46Craig Groeschel.
- 5:47He you know, I've watched podcasts of him.
- 5:49He is just amazing with, with how he
- 5:52has vision and how he wants his team
- 5:54around them
- 5:56to grow. And I don't micromanage. I don't
- 5:58want to micromanage at all, all of that.
- 6:00And you need to listen to them and
- 6:02you need to understand
- 6:04their concerns. And you want to not only
- 6:07you want to understand their concerns, you want
- 6:08to be able to act on their concerns
- 6:11within reason, you know, and be able to
- 6:13help them grow and be able
- 6:15to see the vision. And, you know, one
- 6:16of the examples is we're in this middle
- 6:18of a $53,000,000
- 6:20project,
- 6:21and
- 6:22the PT department is downstairs underneath the hospital.
- 6:26And inside that space is going to be
- 6:27a new specialist clinic, so we can bring
- 6:29in specialists
- 6:31inside that market, analysis that we did with
- 6:33I. Bailey. We can see where
- 6:36the growth,
- 6:37capabilities are. We can see where the
- 6:41growth, capabilities are. We can see where the
- 6:42specialist growth is going to be. So that
- 6:42was key of our, that we wanted to
- 6:43bring in
- 6:44specialists to, Montreal County because we're an hour
- 6:47away from our tertiary,
- 6:49hospital in Minot.
- 6:51And so but then the one thing that
- 6:52led into from one of my one on
- 6:54ones is my PT then looked at me
- 6:56and she goes, Steph, we're really growing. And
- 6:58with the specialist clinic sitting there,
- 7:01then it's going to be kind of
- 7:03busy down here, you know, and it's a
- 7:05small little space. So now on top of
- 7:06all of this and all the growth inside
- 7:08the market analysis, it says rehab,
- 7:11the inpatient service line of rehab is going
- 7:13to grow like 27%
- 7:14over the next ten years. So now that's
- 7:16actually something we're talking about with the current
- 7:19construction company that is building our four year
- 7:22project, working on the four year project, do
- 7:24we take PT off-site? Do we
- 7:27build just a clinic for them? They'd be
- 7:30the easiest one to take off-site.
- 7:32And then we also have so many travelers.
- 7:34As we all know, the workforce for nursing
- 7:37is really hard.
- 7:38So we have a lot of travelers
- 7:40for PT and then our ER,
- 7:42and then we could build apartments on top
- 7:44of the PT clinic. So that would kind
- 7:46of be a twofold, you know, where it
- 7:48would be nice apartments for our travelers to
- 7:50be, you know, to live in when they're
- 7:51here. And then we'd be able to, you
- 7:54know,
- 7:55take on that ten year growth of 27%
- 7:58and build a really nice p clinic off-site.
- 8:00It's only a couple blocks away from the
- 8:02current hospital. And if they needed to, they
- 8:04do a lot of rehabilitation
- 8:06inside of our nursing home. We have a
- 8:08really big, gorgeous restorative therapy room inside the
- 8:11new nursing home,
- 8:12just to keep the residents moving and, you
- 8:14know, and walking as long as they possibly
- 8:17can. And so then it would be an
- 8:19easy drive to come over, you know, from
- 8:21there. So yeah. Mhmm. Don't wanna get bored.
- 8:24Right? Yeah.
- 8:25There's always something to do.
- 8:27No. But I really think that is so
- 8:29critical as you were talking about how you're
- 8:31working with your leadership team, making sure you're
- 8:33not micromanaging, but really listening to them, understanding
- 8:36some of the challenges as well as things
- 8:38that they're seeing on the ground and then
- 8:39being able to troubleshoot, work through it, find
- 8:41solutions, and, you know, look at ways that
- 8:44really can
- 8:45improve the organization overall as well as service
- 8:47to patients. So, you know, it's incredible to
- 8:50to think through all of that. What do
- 8:52you think the hardest thing you'll have to
- 8:53do will be?
- 8:58The hardest thing will keep is I'll have
- 9:01to keep them, like I said, focused
- 9:03because there's so much going on. And you
- 9:06wanna be in front of them and you
- 9:08don't
- 9:09I'm a visionary, and I love just challenges.
- 9:12But a lot of them don't love challenges.
- 9:14You know? Like, I you know, we all
- 9:16do DISH assessments, and I'm very I'm a
- 9:18d. I'm a high d. But a lot
- 9:20of my staff are s's, and they don't
- 9:22like they don't like confrontation, and they don't
- 9:25like, you know, taking on the big tasks
- 9:27and figuring out how to, you know, do
- 9:29the do the hard topics and the hard
- 9:31conversations.
- 9:32And so that's the one thing that I
- 9:34don't wanna get them uncomfortable
- 9:36in a situation. I wanna be able to
- 9:38listen to what they're saying, but I also
- 9:40wanna challenge them too. You know? Because growth
- 9:42is great across the board if it's done
- 9:44and done right, especially with leadership.
- 9:48For sure. I think that's, you know, so
- 9:50important and and definitely
- 9:51helpful to understand the propensities, but then figure
- 9:54out where, you know, the great leaders, managers,
- 9:56and coaches, it seems like, can find the
- 9:58levers or buttons that they need to press
- 10:00in order to make their teams, you know,
- 10:02inspire that growth and get them into a
- 10:04position where they can,
- 10:06truly, you know, level up in a meaningful
- 10:08way.
- 10:10Exactly. And it's been fun watching them grow.
- 10:13A lot of them have been coaching over
- 10:14the last year,
- 10:16in the leadership. Girls and one of them
- 10:17on the one on ones yesterday, she had
- 10:19taken on a couple challenges inside of radiology
- 10:22and she just knocked it out of the
- 10:24park. She goes, I would have just a
- 10:25year ago went, oh, that's okay.
- 10:27We won't have to offer that service. But
- 10:29she was like, no, we're offering that service.
- 10:31No, this is why. And it was really
- 10:33cute watching her just be excited, you know,
- 10:36that she was able to tackle that challenge
- 10:38and
- 10:39we're still we're able to bring the service
- 10:40in. You know? So it's it's been fun
- 10:42watching them grow. So it's very fun.
- 10:45Absolutely. That's fantastic.
- 10:47And speaking of growth, where do you see
- 10:49some of the best opportunities for organizational growth
- 10:52overall? I know we've talked a little bit
- 10:53about some of those capital investments and space
- 10:55where you're trying to expand services. But, you
- 10:58know, anything else you'd like to talk about
- 11:00and touch on when you think about growth
- 11:02going forward?
- 11:05As, you know, we have the new nursing
- 11:07home. It's gonna be the same footprint as
- 11:09we have, you know, 36 beds,
- 11:12skilled,
- 11:1310 basic care. The one area that we
- 11:15can do more services and more growth is
- 11:18on the hospital side.
- 11:20We're bringing in an MRI machine. We're bringing
- 11:22in a treatment area that we can maybe
- 11:25do some different
- 11:26items, you know, some different outside the box
- 11:28thinking,
- 11:30for different services that we can offer,
- 11:32Montreal County
- 11:34and all that. The one thing we always
- 11:35have to be careful with and the one
- 11:37thing I really wanna,
- 11:38pay attention to, I don't wanna grow too
- 11:41fast. I wanna grow reasonable. I wanna grow
- 11:43what makes sense, and I don't wanna get
- 11:45my current staff nervous. Because we all know,
- 11:47you know, living in rural North Dakota, it's
- 11:50hard to it's hard to recruit. You know,
- 11:52right now, we're recruiting a radiologist and we're,
- 11:54you know, we're always wanting to recruit PTs
- 11:57and ER nurses. And so you don't wanna
- 11:59grow too fast that makes your current staff
- 12:02going, hey. Wait a minute. You know, things
- 12:04like that. So we just wanna grow within
- 12:05reason. And so that's gonna be the next
- 12:07step moving into '26 and all of '27
- 12:10is then expanding
- 12:12the the medical center side,
- 12:15but within reason.
- 12:17Comfortable growth. Reasonable growth.
- 12:19Yeah. So Absolutely. Reasonable growth. I love it.
- 12:22Well, Stephanie, thank you so much for joining
- 12:24us on the podcast today. This has been
- 12:26such an inspiring conversation, and I look forward
- 12:28to seeing you at our annual meeting in
- 12:30April. I know you'll be speaking on a
- 12:31panel, and it'll be truly our our, pleasure
- 12:35and honor to have you there in in
- 12:36digging deeper into some of these themes as
- 12:38well as sharing with the broader network of
- 12:40health care executives and leaders, how some of
- 12:42the lessons you've learned and and things you're
- 12:44thinking about for the future. So I look
- 12:46forward to that.
- 12:48I look forward to it also. I love
- 12:50that conference.
