- 0:26It's revolutionary talk here on WREV. 760 AM or Patriots prompt.
- 0:33The phone and text number is 209565.
- 0:35Dave. That's 209-565-3283.
- 0:40Now here's your host, Dave Diamond.
- 0:48It is not a good day, my friends.
- 0:52It is not good news. I don't even know really where
- 1:02to begin with us. I thought that the reason that
- 1:11Doctor Church had been escorted under heavy military guard had
- 1:16more to do with a plan to inoculate the army, but that has
- 1:22turned out to not be the case. My friends it it it is far worse
- 1:26than even I could have imagined, and I have a pretty broad
- 1:32imagination. Governor Hancock of
- 1:40Massachusetts is in possession of a letter that was sent to him
- 1:452 days ago by General Washington, and it turns out
- 1:53that Benjamin Church, Doctor Benjamin Church, the Surgeon
- 1:56General of the army, was in fact arrested.
- 2:00He was not being escorted. He was being arrested by the
- 2:05army at the order of General Washington himself, it appears,
- 2:14according to his letter to Governor Hancock that last week
- 2:23on or about the second or third of October, he was presented
- 2:30with a letter that had been intercepted.
- 2:37I don't want to get into the details of the interception.
- 2:40It apparently involves a woman of ill repute with a badly
- 2:47pockmarked skin and a reputation of being just, so we say, a
- 2:59woman of ill repute who apparently Doctor Church trusted
- 3:04for some reason. Read between the lines and
- 3:07figure out what those might have been.
- 3:11The letter was written in a cipher.
- 3:16The cipher was taken to the Army headquarters in Cambridge.
- 3:21Where it was broken. I don't know.
- 3:26I wasn't there. I don't really know how or why
- 3:29they broke it. I'm my mathematics skills are
- 3:33pretty weak, as you know, and I have no way of knowing how they
- 3:36broke the code. But they did.
- 3:39And it turns out that this entire letter was a report on
- 3:45colonial troop strengths, dispositions, plans.
- 3:52It was basically telling the Brits everything they would want
- 3:57to know in code. And at least part of the code
- 4:02reads to the effect of please be careful with this, because if
- 4:06that if I'm found out, I will be killed.
- 4:09You're damn right. Church was taken to the
- 4:20headquarters at Cambridge where he was charged.
- 4:26I guess Church has been arrested.
- 4:30He has been confined. It is my understanding that the
- 4:35army has already had the Washington has already had the
- 4:40investigation and the the interrogation.
- 4:45It is my understanding based on this letter and some other
- 4:48conversations that I have had, this has already been handled.
- 4:53This has already been, it's wrapped up and that Doctor
- 4:59Church has admitted to sending this letter.
- 5:04Now, he claims, he claims that he was trying to trick the
- 5:12British. In other words, she was just, he
- 5:15was just telling them to try to scare them into thinking they
- 5:18shouldn't attack because we're stronger than than they think we
- 5:21are. Of course, the problem with that
- 5:26is if you're trying to scare the British into thinking that they
- 5:31shouldn't attack because we're so strong, wouldn't you tell
- 5:35them that we're stronger than we really are instead of giving
- 5:39them, you know, pretty accurate details?
- 5:43He is the surgeon general. He pretty much goes everywhere,
- 5:46sees everything, knows everything.
- 5:52Washington and the others said that his denials do not ring
- 5:58truth, and that consequently they do not believe him.
- 6:08They do not believe that Doctor Church was trying to scare the
- 6:12British. They believe that he was in fact
- 6:14a traitor. This, my friends, is the first
- 6:21great treason of our revolution. Not by some Tory merchant, not
- 6:26some known loyalist, but by one who speaks the language of
- 6:29liberty himself while writing letters to our enemy.
- 6:34And if a man like Benjamin Church can can, can be bought,
- 6:39who else might be a spy? Now, here's where it gets really
- 6:46messed up. You ready?
- 6:49I told you the yesterday that John Adams was telling me that
- 6:53Congress is working on instructions and rules and
- 6:57regulations and that sort of thing for the army, as if
- 6:59somehow or another this was important.
- 7:01Well, now I know why, according to our laws, our rules, our
- 7:08guidelines for the military, 'cause you know, you got to have
- 7:14those. Do you know what the penalty is
- 7:17for being caught as a traitor in our army?
- 7:23Well, it's not what you would think it would be.
- 7:27You would think it would be hung till dead, but it's not.
- 7:30In fact, there is no penalty for it.
- 7:32It's not even covered. Nobody even thought that we
- 7:36would have a traitor in our midst.
- 7:38And so it wasn't even addressed. And now Congress is having to
- 7:43rewrite this stuff in a hurry to try to deal with this.
- 7:48The problem there is then now we're into ex post facto laws.
- 7:53We're now, we're now we're, we've already tried and we've
- 7:57already found him guilty. But the punishment is not going
- 8:04to fit the crime. The punishment is limited
- 8:08basically to confinement. And perhaps, I guess we could
- 8:16expel him. I guess we could send him
- 8:18somewhere else. I mean, he wants to be British
- 8:23so bad. Let's send him to Britain.
- 8:26There's plenty of ships that are still going that direction.
- 8:32But we can't execute him. We can't.
- 8:34We can't give him the punishment that he deserves because our
- 8:38laws don't allow it. Our rules do not allow it.
- 8:42It's not insane. There's a part of me that just
- 8:46wants to say hang the rules and let's just hang, hang the man.
- 8:49Let's just be done with this. But the problem with that is if
- 8:54we if we do that, then we're descending to their level too.
- 8:58We didn't take this into account.
- 9:00We did not believe that there would be a traitor in our midst.
- 9:03And so we didn't. We didn't plan for it.
- 9:06And now here we have one and we don't know what to do about it.
- 9:11Currently, he's under confinement.
- 9:15Currently he is awaiting whatever it is we're going to
- 9:22do. The Army is exceedingly
- 9:27irritated by this. It's apparently common
- 9:30knowledge, according to General Washington, and upon a free
- 9:37discussion the nature and circumstances and consequences
- 9:39of this matter, it has been unanimously agreed to lay it
- 9:42before the honorable Conference Congress.
- 9:44Sorry for their special advice and direction at the same time
- 9:49suggesting to their consideration whether an
- 9:51alteration of the 28th article of War may not be necessary.
- 9:59Let me, let me just go out in your line.
- 10:01I'm not in Congress and I get it.
- 10:02But yes, it's, it's necessary. Get it done.
- 10:06We need to hang this guy. We should have hung him already.
- 10:10We should have shot him. But shooting him is too good.
- 10:14He's a traitor. You hang traitors, you don't
- 10:15shoot them. You hang spies, you don't shoot
- 10:19them. You don't give them the honor of
- 10:21war. You embarrass them, you
- 10:25humiliate them, and you hang them.
- 10:30This has shaken the army to the core again.
- 10:35It was not a Tory merchant. It wasn't.
- 10:38It wasn't even Loyalist Bob, for God's sakes.
- 10:42It was the Surgeon General of the Army, Doctor Benjamin
- 10:46Church, who has sold us out for money for gold.
- 10:56Let's go to the lines. Let's go to the funds.
- 10:58Line 1. This is Corporal Josiah Green,
- 11:01Norwich Militia, Sir. We trusted Dr. Church with our
- 11:05wounded men who bled for the cause, and he sold us for gold.
- 11:10He spoke of liberty while counting his British coin.
- 11:13I've seen soldiers die with less shame than he's shown.
- 11:17If a man of learning can betray us, who's next?
- 11:21Every letter home feels suspect now.
- 11:23We've learned to watch the enemy's lines, but from this day
- 11:26forward, we'll be watching our own tents too.
- 11:28Why isn't that? Isn't that we've, we've reached
- 11:32that point now everything is suspect.
- 11:38What if you don't say the right thing?
- 11:39What if you don't, you know, look the right way?
- 11:44What if you've got a friend that's a Tory?
- 11:45What if, what if everything now is going to become suspect
- 11:49because of what Doctor Church has done?
- 11:52Line 3 go ah. Yes, I say the man merely
- 11:56returned to sanity. How long can any gentleman keep
- 11:59company with rebellion before reason reclaims him?
- 12:02You call it treason, I call it wisdom.
- 12:05Perhaps he saw what you refused to see, that this so-called
- 12:09Congress leads us not to liberty, but to ruin.
- 12:12Mark me, Sir, the good doctor will be remembered kindly when
- 12:16this fever of sedition finally breaks.
- 12:18No, he won't, Bob. No, he will not.
- 12:21He will be remembered forever as America's first traitor.
- 12:27With any kind of luck, his passing will be marked with
- 12:33great joy, great excitement. Stay with us.
- 12:41We'll be right back. Welcome back.
- 12:47I'm Dave Diamond. It's revolutionary talk here on
- 12:50AM 760 AM because said that twice.
- 12:55Norwich, CT. The segment brought to you by
- 12:59Old Mutual. Old Harbor Mutual and Salvage
- 13:02for a modest subscription. Old Harbor will lend a hand when
- 13:04the tides turn foul. They will recover what the sea
- 13:08takes and ensure your cargo against worst weather and worst
- 13:12fate. No lawyers, no baffling papers.
- 13:16Just stout men, stout oaths and stout work.
- 13:22It's Old Harbor Mutual and Salvage on the docks here in
- 13:25Narch. Stout oaths are what we need.
- 13:29Congress is going to have to do so.
- 13:30They're going to have to sharpen up the loyalty oaths.
- 13:34They're going to have to adjust the Articles of War.
- 13:39We're going to have to scrutinize every man in the
- 13:46Army. We're going to have to
- 13:49reorganize things in the Army. General Washington is going to
- 13:52have to. And no man can hold rank without
- 13:56complete scrutiny. Dr. Church was obviously not
- 13:59vetted properly. We're going to have to fix that.
- 14:06The news yesterday was that General Howe had arrived in
- 14:10Boston. That was erroneous.
- 14:12I am apologize. That was a mistake.
- 14:17General Howe did not arrive yesterday.
- 14:21He's been here all along. I didn't know this.
- 14:23He apparently has been in London or in Boston the whole time.
- 14:29And now the rumor, the rumor is still that he's going to take
- 14:32over, that he's relieved General Gage.
- 14:35But I don't know what to believe now.
- 14:38I really don't. General Gage, clearly not the
- 14:44man that the Brits want in charge, but it's, it's being
- 14:50said around town, the General Howe will take over.
- 14:53I don't know if that's true or not.
- 14:54I don't know why it's true. I I do know that Billy Howe is,
- 15:03you know, I said yesterday, the guy's a wig.
- 15:05He and his whole family are wigs.
- 15:06They've been our friends in the past.
- 15:08They were not our friends when it mattered most.
- 15:11They call them Gentleman Billy, but don't lead.
- 15:14Don't be fooled by that. General Gage has fumble the
- 15:18British match, but how has come to light the fuse?
- 15:21I believe some of us, I was in the Tavern last night, some of
- 15:26you are hopeful that the British will just give up and go home.
- 15:31I don't. I don't think so.
- 15:32I I think how is here to bring destruction to us and if how
- 15:39means it, we'll see harsher blockades.
- 15:43We may not have any trade left by Christmas.
- 15:47We'll have to wait and see. The British morale, I'm told in
- 15:53Boston is improving, which is not good.
- 15:59They are badly out of supply, but their morale is holding.
- 16:05Is that an effective of Gentleman Billy?
- 16:08Possibly, hopefully the news of the capture of Doctor Church
- 16:15will will put a little pinprick in that and let the air out of
- 16:18that a little bit. It'd be better if we took him up
- 16:21to the top of Bunker Hill where they could see him and just hung
- 16:23him there. But there you go.
- 16:30Two men fell today, one by disgrace, the other by recall.
- 16:36One betrayed his country and the other possibly his king.
- 16:40I don't know if Gage betrayed the king or not, but he
- 16:42certainly failed him. Doctor Church will be forever
- 16:45remembered as the first to sell his soul in this struggle.
- 16:49General Gage will be marked as the first to lose his command.
- 16:52But mark this well. General Howe's rise here means
- 16:58that the king has not yet gotten tired of us in this war.
- 17:01And neither was me. Neither must we.
- 17:04We must not give up. Trust is a costly coin in this
- 17:09revolution. Spend it carefully.
- 17:13We'll be back tomorrow for revolutionary talk right here on
- 17:15760 AM Norwich, CT. I'm Dave Diamond, you can e-mail
