- 0:29This is Hailey Recker with the Becker's Payer
- 0:31Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:33Becker's third annual spring payer issues roundtable.
- 0:36I am thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:38doctor Sachin Jain, president and CEO of SCAN
- 0:41Group. It is my understanding that you just
- 0:43finished speaking in the Conference Conference Room, so
- 0:45thank you so much for taking the time
- 0:47to be here today. My pleasure.
- 0:49Can you go ahead and introduce yourself and
- 0:51tell us a little bit about your background?
- 0:53Sure. Sachin Jain, I lead SCAN Group. SCAN
- 0:55is a not for profit Medicare Advantage
- 0:58organization that was started in 1977.
- 1:01We have a presence in California, Arizona, Nevada,
- 1:03New Mexico, and Texas,
- 1:05and,
- 1:06serve over 300,000
- 1:08members. We also now operate,
- 1:10five different medical groups,
- 1:12that serve special populations,
- 1:14within the older adult population.
- 1:17Alright. Well, thank you so much for that
- 1:19brief introduction.
- 1:20Now to get started, net promoter score is
- 1:23a powerful indicator of member loyalty and satisfaction.
- 1:24How are how are you using NPS to
- 1:24drive meaningful and
- 1:29improvements across your health plan? Look. I think
- 1:32NPS is just what you're measuring. At the
- 1:34end of the day, it's really about, like,
- 1:36changing the experience of care. And I think
- 1:38a lot of what we think about at
- 1:39SCAN as first principles,
- 1:41You know, what would it look like to
- 1:43actually treat this person like a person as
- 1:45opposed to a health plan member?
- 1:47And a lot of that is, like, getting
- 1:49into the space of not normalizing the abnormal
- 1:51practices that
- 1:52really,
- 1:53we've normalized in our industry. We treat people
- 1:56like ping pong balls. We send them,
- 1:58from, you know, one call center to the
- 2:00other call center to the other call center,
- 2:02and we call it, quote, unquote, great member
- 2:04service.
- 2:05We're in the process of trying to really
- 2:07unpack what it is that we do with
- 2:09our members,
- 2:10and then get them into a place where
- 2:12they're feeling like we're treating them more like
- 2:13humans than they are like health plan members.
- 2:16Well, that's super important. And I kind of
- 2:18wanna pivot the conversation a little bit to
- 2:20the future of the payer space.
- 2:22So looking ahead, what do you see as
- 2:24the biggest opportunity for payers to lead the
- 2:27charge in transforming care delivery and driving better
- 2:30outcomes for all stakeholders? And how can leaders
- 2:32take a step in this direction now? For
- 2:34us, it's driving a much higher degree of
- 2:36collaboration between payers and providers.
- 2:39Right now, payers and providers sit on opposite
- 2:41side of the table and basically argue about
- 2:44rates. And then, you know, there's some cute
- 2:46window dressing that's about service innovation or quality
- 2:49innovation.
- 2:50But the reality is is that most of
- 2:51what takes place between payers and providers
- 2:54is haggling over rates.
- 2:56I think, you know, our most recently announced
- 2:59partnership with Sutter Health Plan Sutter Medical Group
- 3:02or Sutter Health System,
- 3:04you know, exemplifies the kinds of things that
- 3:06we wanna see more of in health care,
- 3:08which is payers and providers collaborating
- 3:10to build new provider oriented health plans, provider
- 3:13sponsored health plans, provider partnered health plans, that
- 3:16ultimately are gonna serve members
- 3:18through a a lot of innovation and collaboration.
- 3:21Right now, I would say the nature of
- 3:24the relationship just needs to change very fundamentally.
- 3:27Well, doctor, thank you so much for joining
- 3:29me today. Again, this is Haley Recker with
- 3:31the Becker's Payer Podcast
- 3:32recorded live at the Becker's third annual spring
- 3:34payer issues roundtable.
- 3:36Doctor, thank you so much. My pleasure. Thank
- 3:37you.
