- 0:11Speaker 1: get ready for Week four of the NFL season of
- 0:14Speaker 1: Houston Texas going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers at NRG
- 0:18Speaker 1: Steelers Up and again on novel win on the road
- 0:21Speaker 1: this season. Michael looked good, delighted to be joined by
- 0:24Speaker 1: Jimmy English State McKee. Jimmy, first off, hid the money good.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I am fantastic, Michael, glad to be back here with
- 0:29Speaker 2: you boys for the second time this week. It's always
- 0:32Speaker 2: a pleasure talking football, and even better when we're talking
- 0:35Speaker 2: Steelers football. So I'm delighted to be here. And yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 2: happened to crack.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Under the crack. Indeed, as we say over here, a
- 0:43Speaker 1: good good to see its well, great to be talking
- 0:44Speaker 1: a buble you again and do have great to see
- 0:46Speaker 1: you as well. I'm on hiding good.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Make yeah, thanks. Still having recovered from Sunday night's still
- 0:51Speaker 4: a bit what's the word I'm looking for, Still tired,
- 0:54Speaker 4: if you'd say, But yeah, I'm recovering well. And on
- 0:56Speaker 4: the Sunday here we go.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah, people wondering in the States Sun that I footbook
- 1:01Speaker 1: was on there at five am and Ireland, but it's great.
- 1:03Speaker 1: We love it and one guy that was there is
- 1:07Speaker 1: our guest this week, and like this is one I
- 1:10Speaker 1: think anyone who's an NFL fond in Europe, never mind
- 1:12Speaker 1: being the Sediors Fund, knows who this s guy is
- 1:14Speaker 1: an offensive tackle for the former of Defensive tacoph Theaters,
- 1:17Speaker 1: two time Super Bowls champion. I'm not even doing them
- 1:20Speaker 1: justice with with this introduction, but we are at Buzzn't
- 1:23Speaker 1: to welcome Marx Starks for the first time and hopefully
- 1:25Speaker 1: all the lost to the Irish Seriers podcast marks. As
- 1:28Speaker 1: we said, falcha welcome.
- 1:29Speaker 5: How are you doing. I'm doing well, fellas, and I
- 1:33Speaker 5: am excited to be on the podcast. This is one
- 1:36Speaker 5: that you know, as the Steelers talked about it because
- 1:39Speaker 5: I also do some work on their business side. When
- 1:41Speaker 5: I knew we were coming to Ireland for the business stuffer,
- 1:44Speaker 5: I was mad I could be there. I know Cordell came, uh,
- 1:47Speaker 5: but I hope to be there this upcoming year because
- 1:50Speaker 5: this has been a passion of mine wanting to see this.
- 1:53Speaker 5: I know before mister Rooney left, you know, he always
- 1:57Speaker 5: displayed his and forvor for for his home, for his homeland,
- 2:03Speaker 5: and so his dream was to do a football camp
- 2:06Speaker 5: over there, and I was like, I will be there,
- 2:08Speaker 5: mister Rooney. So I was like, so now that we
- 2:10Speaker 5: now have talks again, And of course that's Dan Rooney
- 2:12Speaker 5: who Dave in the background. You have that patch on
- 2:15Speaker 5: the back of that Juju jersey. You know, he was
- 2:18Speaker 5: such an instrumental person in my growth and development as
- 2:22Speaker 5: a young man, as a young football player and a
- 2:24Speaker 5: young adult. So I am excited to be here, to
- 2:27Speaker 5: be talking to you gentlemen.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Awesome, and like, there's so many points I mentioned there
- 2:32Speaker 1: about I was going to I'm presuming you have been
- 2:34Speaker 1: to Arland before, mix and you hope to get at
- 2:36Speaker 1: some point. Have you been at all before?
- 2:38Speaker 5: I have not. I have not. It is on my
- 2:40Speaker 5: bucket list of places to go, and I'm hoping I
- 2:43Speaker 5: get to check that off the list very soon. Of course,
- 2:46Speaker 5: my wife is gonna be jealous about it because she
- 2:48Speaker 5: also wants to go to Ireland, so we'll figure out
- 2:50Speaker 5: another trip. But I definitely want to make sure I
- 2:53Speaker 5: come uh to sport the Steelers, especially in Ireland.
- 2:58Speaker 3: First of all, it's a it's a pleasure to be
- 3:00Speaker 3: talking with you.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I had the fantastic pleasure of watching you play. During
- 3:06Speaker 2: my early days as a Steeler found him protecting big bands.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So obviously the Steelers a nasty the NFL Global Markets
- 3:14Speaker 2: program that they had Joiner were participating in the Global
- 3:17Speaker 2: Markets program earlier the off season back in March, or
- 3:20Speaker 2: may actually am how impressed I be being with their
- 3:23Speaker 2: with the efforts so far to grow the game on.
- 3:25Speaker 3: This sign of the Atnantic, I've been.
- 3:27Speaker 5: I've been super impressed. And I think the Steelers because
- 3:31Speaker 5: of their background, because of their history and their connections overseas,
- 3:35Speaker 5: and especially when you're talking about to the country of Ireland,
- 3:39Speaker 5: it's been fantastic. I mean the fact that they had
- 3:41Speaker 5: a game in Ireland played, of course there was tremendous
- 3:46Speaker 5: and I wish I would have been old enough to
- 3:48Speaker 5: have played that game. But you know, when I look
- 3:50Speaker 5: at just the initiatives and how they're allowing individual NFL
- 3:53Speaker 5: teams to go into markets that they feel comfortable with
- 3:57Speaker 5: or they identify as markets of interest for them and
- 4:01Speaker 5: let them go and ingratiate themselves to the people, I
- 4:04Speaker 5: think the actual Jaguars has really embraced that in the
- 4:07Speaker 5: UK with their programs. As twenty twelve, they have been
- 4:12Speaker 5: in that market and that you could see the ramp
- 4:14Speaker 5: up the shot Con has kind of done in there
- 4:16Speaker 5: to make the Jaguars a team that's known in the UK.
- 4:21Speaker 5: And I think having the Steelers the opportunity to be
- 4:23Speaker 5: able to open up and go to these other markets.
- 4:25Speaker 5: I look at Ireland, I look at Mexico as being
- 4:27Speaker 5: the two biggest markets for the Steelers and especially with
- 4:31Speaker 5: the personal familial ties with the Rooneys to Ireland, that
- 4:35Speaker 5: makes it that much more special, right, because there's a
- 4:38Speaker 5: legacy there, there's a history there, and they and those
- 4:42Speaker 5: principles that the Irish people carry, they carry it into
- 4:45Speaker 5: the organization. So to be able to come and have
- 4:48Speaker 5: an opportunity to go market directly in Ireland, to have
- 4:51Speaker 5: these type of programs and hopefully a lot more, it's
- 4:55Speaker 5: really it's really awesome and to be at the precipice
- 4:57Speaker 5: of that, it's pretty special.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, as you say, actually know it's great to even
- 5:02Speaker 4: be at sort of work at the podcast. You know,
- 5:05Speaker 4: we've just had been at the heart of things, if
- 5:07Speaker 4: you like, at the center of it. So it's obviously
- 5:09Speaker 4: exciting times being Steer Sound from Ireland and.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Just obviously coming back on your own career.
- 5:14Speaker 4: You know, if you look at some of the great
- 5:16Speaker 4: past rushers in the games, that is obviously we've got
- 5:18Speaker 4: a great one on TJ.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Watts.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I'm just wondering what sort of you know, who's been
- 5:21Speaker 4: the best sort of defensive layeman or edge rusher you've
- 5:24Speaker 4: come up against. Obviously you've come up with, I guess
- 5:25Speaker 4: some great ones. I'm just wondering, is there any that
- 5:28Speaker 4: comes the name when you think of past rushers like
- 5:29Speaker 4: that you've come up against.
- 5:30Speaker 5: If you're like, oh my goodness, well, like you said,
- 5:33Speaker 5: you guys have watched my career earlier on Terrell Suggs
- 5:36Speaker 5: for the Baltimore Ravens, was the gnaw and Mike Crawl
- 5:40Speaker 5: were by your career of tremendous pass rusher, a guy
- 5:46Speaker 5: I respect as a football player and skilled as far
- 5:51Speaker 5: as an opponent. But of course TJ being the now
- 5:54Speaker 5: all time Steelers sacklely the guy who held the mantle
- 5:57Speaker 5: before him, was a guy had to go had to
- 5:59Speaker 5: go to the blow with in practice every single day.
- 6:02Speaker 5: That got me ready to face those Terrell Suggs, Dwight Freeanees,
- 6:07Speaker 5: DeMarcus Wares like you know, all these great pass rushers
- 6:11Speaker 5: I went against. It started with James Harrison, started with
- 6:13Speaker 5: number ninety two. He was by far the most difficult
- 6:17Speaker 5: opponent I ever had the challenge in my entire life.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And he was a guy that I was happy to
- 6:22Speaker 5: call a teammate and even more relieved to call him
- 6:24Speaker 5: a teammate on Sundays because I didn't have to see
- 6:27Speaker 5: him on the other side of the ball. But those
- 6:30Speaker 5: are just a number of Those are just a couple
- 6:31Speaker 5: of the guys. I mean, you know, I want to
- 6:33Speaker 5: get some other great ones. I mean, you think of
- 6:34Speaker 5: Clay Matthews, Who's another guy that had a prolific press
- 6:37Speaker 5: rusher at Julius Pepper's another one who's up for the
- 6:40Speaker 5: Hall of Fame right now, but none harder, none harder
- 6:43Speaker 5: than James Harrison. And then I would put Terrell Suggs
- 6:46Speaker 5: in that category just because I saw him so frequently
- 6:48Speaker 5: as well. The other guys didn't see as much.
- 6:52Speaker 1: When you look at your CV mocks, it screams history
- 6:56Speaker 1: in a positive way, and when you look at the Steelers,
- 6:58Speaker 1: it screams history and so many, so many Lovedmark moments
- 7:01Speaker 1: and one guy that played and then Trasson partner your
- 7:04Speaker 1: care was your head coach, your first head coach at
- 7:07Speaker 1: Coach Caliro. Can you talk to us about what he
- 7:10Speaker 1: was like as a head coach on how he mentioned
- 7:12Speaker 1: you and you just high in Pittsburgh.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I mean coach Kauer. I'll forever be grateful
- 7:16Speaker 5: to him, right, He's the one that actually took an
- 7:19Speaker 5: interest in me to be drafted. I remember my pro
- 7:23Speaker 5: day and this was kind of the first moment that
- 7:25Speaker 5: sticks out, like i'd want gone through the combine and
- 7:28Speaker 5: gone through senior bulls. You see all these coaches, but
- 7:31Speaker 5: the one person that absolutely was the one who sticks
- 7:37Speaker 5: out is I remember sitting in the weight room at
- 7:38Speaker 5: the University of Florida and you had to you have
- 7:41Speaker 5: to stand on this old school almost looked like a
- 7:43Speaker 5: cattle scale, and you sit on it and you look
- 7:46Speaker 5: out at the crowd and everybody's staring back at you,
- 7:50Speaker 5: and your strength coach calls out your weight, and I
- 7:53Speaker 5: just remember them looking out. They called out my way
- 7:55Speaker 5: like Max Stark's three hundred and thirty seven pounds, right,
- 8:00Speaker 5: And all I saw in the crowd of all these scouts.
- 8:03Speaker 5: You know, Coach Cowrad is pretty tall, dude. You just
- 8:06Speaker 5: see the chin and he's just shaking his head. I
- 8:10Speaker 5: never saw him again. It's like he disappeared like a goat.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I didn't see if the rest of the workout. He
- 8:15Speaker 5: wasn't there for any of the lifting, he wasn't there
- 8:17Speaker 5: for any of the field work. He was not president up.
- 8:20Speaker 6: He was literally the only time I remember seeing him
- 8:23Speaker 6: was at that way in And then we get to
- 8:25Speaker 6: the draft and it's it's towards the end of the night,
- 8:29Speaker 6: back when the first through third rounds were still one night.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Ah. Crazy to think about that history right there. Now
- 8:34Speaker 5: it's a spectacle that lasts all weekend. But I got
- 8:38Speaker 5: a phone call from a four to one to two
- 8:40Speaker 5: area code, by the way, never knew what area code
- 8:42Speaker 5: Pittsburgh was at the time. Funny enough, and I used
- 8:45Speaker 5: to go there every summer. But Omar congu Is on
- 8:49Speaker 5: the phone. He was like, please hold, Coach Cowards making decisions,
- 8:52Speaker 5: And I'm like, why'd you call me if you're gonna
- 8:55Speaker 5: put me on hold? Right? You know? In my head?
- 8:57Speaker 5: And then and then right after that, Coach Coward gets
- 9:01Speaker 5: on the phone. He's like, hey, Max, So I got
- 9:03Speaker 5: a couple of questions asking I'm like, all right, coach.
- 9:05Speaker 5: What's up. He's like, do you like snow. I was like, well,
- 9:10Speaker 5: I'm from Florida. I played in it a couple of times.
- 9:15Speaker 5: I mean, And so I say, is there a football
- 9:18Speaker 5: out there? He's like absolutely, I said, then let's go.
- 9:20Speaker 5: He's like, he's like, do you like to be physical?
- 9:22Speaker 5: I said, and that's why I play offensive line. I
- 9:25Speaker 5: need contact every play. He's like, good job, you're a
- 9:28Speaker 5: Pittsburgh Steeler. And that was like the first interaction and
- 9:31Speaker 5: then fast forward to getting there meeting him. Coach Coward
- 9:34Speaker 5: was one of those coaches because he was a former player,
- 9:37Speaker 5: Like there was a different level of understanding that he
- 9:40Speaker 5: had about your psyche, about your psychological state, and so
- 9:44Speaker 5: he knew how to get the best out of guys.
- 9:46Speaker 5: But he also knew how to relate. And one of
- 9:48Speaker 5: the things I really appreciated was that he would pull
- 9:51Speaker 5: me into his office every once in a while, because
- 9:53Speaker 5: the offensive line room was right past the head coach's office,
- 9:56Speaker 5: and he would just come in and just ask me
- 9:57Speaker 5: how I'm doing, how's everything going, you know, how's it
- 10:01Speaker 5: going with the guys, you know, because he knew it
- 10:04Speaker 5: was important to have that bond amongst your teammates. So
- 10:07Speaker 5: he would do that to a lot of guys randomly
- 10:09Speaker 5: and just to get a heartbeat and a feel for
- 10:11Speaker 5: the team. And I thought that was special. But he
- 10:14Speaker 5: was very transparent in his expectations for you, so you
- 10:17Speaker 5: never had to wonder what coach Karen was thinking. He
- 10:21Speaker 5: was always one of those guys that had he had
- 10:23Speaker 5: an open door policy. You could always come into his office,
- 10:25Speaker 5: you can ask a questions. You might not like the answer,
- 10:28Speaker 5: but you could always ask the question. And I appreciated
- 10:30Speaker 5: that type of transparency, right because as a player, you know,
- 10:35Speaker 5: you want to know that your coach A has your back,
- 10:37Speaker 5: but B is willing to listen regardless if he's going
- 10:40Speaker 5: to give you sugar or salt in that conversation, He's
- 10:44Speaker 5: willing to listen to you. And I thought that was
- 10:45Speaker 5: something that was really formidable in my younger years that
- 10:48Speaker 5: I try and apply to myself when I interact with people,
- 10:51Speaker 5: or I interact with younger players, Hey, how you doing, man?
- 10:54Speaker 5: You know, just ask those personal questions outside of just
- 10:58Speaker 5: the athlete aspect of it, because I think it's important
- 11:01Speaker 5: that they know that you see them, right, that there's
- 11:03Speaker 5: a there's a person there as well, and he taught
- 11:05Speaker 5: me that.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I thought you was being totally involved in the growth
- 11:12Speaker 2: of Steelers Nation here overseas, particularly in Ireland. What was
- 11:16Speaker 2: your reaction to the recent announcement that the Steelers will
- 11:18Speaker 2: be hosting the the first ever NFL Find Watch Party
- 11:22Speaker 2: in crow Park, Dublin later on in the air.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I was ecstatic to hear that, and I actually went
- 11:28Speaker 5: on Sky Sports opening weekend. We were all we were
- 11:33Speaker 5: all watching here, Yeah, and to hear that news right
- 11:38Speaker 5: before I was about to go on, I was like, oh,
- 11:39Speaker 5: I got to talk about this. This is phenomenal. And
- 11:42Speaker 5: just the immediate impact and and the way that it
- 11:45Speaker 5: was received, I mean, sold out almost immediately. I mean
- 11:49Speaker 5: that that was that was really special. And to know
- 11:51Speaker 5: that we could have that type of effect across the pond.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Because it's one thing to be in the city right
- 11:58Speaker 5: of Pittsburgh. Everybody believes black and gold, that year around it.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Every day, the heartbeat of the city goes with your
- 12:03Speaker 5: wins and losses. But then when you see that there
- 12:06Speaker 5: is a bigger outward following that extends beyond the city limits,
- 12:13Speaker 5: that extends beyond the state limits and the country limits.
- 12:16Speaker 5: To know that there's a country that fully believes in you,
- 12:21Speaker 5: that loves what you do, and they love your team
- 12:23Speaker 5: and your organization. It gives you a bigger sense of
- 12:26Speaker 5: pride and you realize how global of a sport football is,
- 12:31Speaker 5: and American football. I always had to say that American
- 12:34Speaker 5: football is because for us, we only see it from
- 12:36Speaker 5: a national perspective. You know, I didn't get to play
- 12:39Speaker 5: overseas for any games, so for me, I can hear
- 12:43Speaker 5: about it. But it's another thing when you see that
- 12:46Speaker 5: visual representation of it, like we're having a watch part,
- 12:49Speaker 5: we're having people there. I wanted to go there for it.
- 12:52Speaker 5: I was like, man, I want to go there and
- 12:54Speaker 5: be a part of that, but I can't. I was like,
- 12:56Speaker 5: cause I got to call a game or radio. But
- 12:58Speaker 5: it's something that I always looked at. I said, man,
- 13:00Speaker 5: if I ever get the chance to do that, I
- 13:02Speaker 5: would love to do that. And I would, And Ireland
- 13:04Speaker 5: is definitely on the top of my list, especially representing
- 13:06Speaker 5: the Steelers organization.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You can always come over and call it from crow
- 13:10Speaker 2: power line.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Yes, yes, you know what, I would love that.
- 13:15Speaker 4: No, definitely, I'll say, you know, you're welcome any time
- 13:17Speaker 4: to come over. Max it's it's it's one of those
- 13:19Speaker 4: things where told we had to obviously get everybody over
- 13:22Speaker 4: and hopefully for a game as well, and just even
- 13:24Speaker 4: come back to your own career again and obviously you're
- 13:27Speaker 4: yourself from Big Bend. Just both came out and the
- 13:29Speaker 4: see him draft and so obviously he's got that straight
- 13:32Speaker 4: chemistry coming out of the drafts. I're just wondering what
- 13:34Speaker 4: your relationship was like with him, and can you just
- 13:37Speaker 4: explain what the importance is for an offensive linement to
- 13:40Speaker 4: have with his quarterback. Is it something that is it's
- 13:42Speaker 4: very important or is it more just like you can
- 13:44Speaker 4: you can sort of separate your differences and just blend
- 13:46Speaker 4: in with the rest of the team.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Okay, So here's how close then and I were when
- 13:52Speaker 5: Ben got to Pittsburgh. I got to Pittsburgh. We've shared
- 13:56Speaker 5: the same car going to do an interview together the
- 14:00Speaker 5: same place for the late Stan SAVERGN who was a
- 14:03Speaker 5: Pittsburgh legend and commentator. We went and did his show
- 14:06Speaker 5: and then we drove to the facility to sign our
- 14:08Speaker 5: contracts together. And then on top of that, my locker
- 14:12Speaker 5: was next to him my entire career, so I was
- 14:14Speaker 5: literally as close as you could possibly be to him
- 14:17Speaker 5: in proximity for nine years and then, I mean we
- 14:22Speaker 5: shared a lot of a lot of moments together. I
- 14:24Speaker 5: mean Ben made it a point to take us on trips,
- 14:28Speaker 5: to invite us and include us on a lot of things.
- 14:31Speaker 5: You know, we were we were attendants in his wedding.
- 14:35Speaker 5: You know, Ben was at my wedding and he was
- 14:38Speaker 5: a special person. He had to get up there to
- 14:41Speaker 5: speak at my wedding, even though I did not have
- 14:43Speaker 5: him on the list. But I mean, we had so many,
- 14:46Speaker 5: so many We grew up together essentially as young men,
- 14:49Speaker 5: right because you enter this game the age around twenty
- 14:51Speaker 5: one to twenty two. You're fresh out of college. This
- 14:54Speaker 5: is really your first taste of the real world and
- 14:56Speaker 5: having to deal with real world issues, taxes, priorities, edualy,
- 15:00Speaker 5: how do you manage your butdy like all of these things.
- 15:02Speaker 5: And we'd have these conversations and so we just we
- 15:06Speaker 5: grew together over the years as young men and became dads, fathers, husbands.
- 15:11Speaker 5: You know, we had all of these first that we
- 15:14Speaker 5: happened around each other, and so it was really special
- 15:17Speaker 5: to have that relationship because I know, not everybody gets
- 15:20Speaker 5: that relationship with their quarterback and offensive linemen. But you know,
- 15:24Speaker 5: for an old line, it's already one special, very together group.
- 15:27Speaker 5: But then when your quarterback becomes an extension of that group,
- 15:31Speaker 5: and we like we traveled down to his lake house
- 15:33Speaker 5: many of time, as we've gone on trips, you know,
- 15:36Speaker 5: across the country together, We've had many of fun times.
- 15:40Speaker 5: And so it was so Ben with Ben's really special.
- 15:44Speaker 5: He's still a dear friend of mine to this day,
- 15:47Speaker 5: and you know, it's it was just it was a
- 15:49Speaker 5: great moment for us to have almost a decade together,
- 15:52Speaker 5: but literally go to it right next to each other
- 15:54Speaker 5: in the locker room and of course in the huddle.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Yeah, you're probably like, you're probably like, I can get
- 16:00Speaker 4: away from this game.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm like, he's everywhere. I said, Ah, tired of
- 16:04Speaker 5: number seven, geez, see it every day. No, but it's
- 16:07Speaker 5: lucky number seven because I believe he'll be a Hall
- 16:09Speaker 5: of Famer. And you know, he was one of the
- 16:11Speaker 5: guys that if it wasn't for him, I mean we
- 16:13Speaker 5: wouldn't we wouldn't have won Super Bowl forty three, and
- 16:16Speaker 5: he and he led the way. Even though he didn't
- 16:18Speaker 5: have a touchdown pass, he still rushed for a touchdown
- 16:21Speaker 5: in Super Bowl forty. I mean, you know, we always
- 16:24Speaker 5: had each other's back, and that's one of the things
- 16:25Speaker 5: I always felt great. If you saw Ben in the huddle,
- 16:28Speaker 5: you knew we had a chance to win a game.
- 16:30Speaker 5: And there was never a doubt in any of our minds.
- 16:32Speaker 5: He was our unequivocal leader. When you looked at his eyes,
- 16:36Speaker 5: you know, and you saw blood coming from some body
- 16:39Speaker 5: part and he just wasn't even thinking about it. It
- 16:41Speaker 5: was like, all right, well, let's keep blocking guys, because
- 16:44Speaker 5: he's not gonna stop.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It seems I got it, seemed to finally gave. In
- 16:50Speaker 1: Pittsburgh was only last week. It's really really weird. It's
- 16:52Speaker 1: it's crazy. Other time flies and dot Knight in Pittsburgh
- 16:55Speaker 1: was special with the funds and one thing, you got
- 16:57Speaker 1: to see the box round in the stea. It's not
- 16:59Speaker 1: just for the seat, but also doing college ball as well.
- 17:01Speaker 1: It's just seeing bonds on their atmosphere. And you could
- 17:05Speaker 1: say the staters Nition really sorry stater Nistion really showed
- 17:10Speaker 1: up in Vegas last Sunday to said, at least I
- 17:13Speaker 1: was watching the AM I two in the morning. I
- 17:14Speaker 1: couldn't get over there on the staters fans that were
- 17:16Speaker 1: in Allegiance and hopefully it's another last time in Allegiance
- 17:19Speaker 1: this season. And just for you, where would you run
- 17:22Speaker 1: the Steels fom based like traveling bomb based an atmosphere
- 17:25Speaker 1: amongst other bonds that you've played for and seen as well.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Number One, the following that the Steelers have from city
- 17:35Speaker 5: to city, stadium to stadium across this world. It's pretty fantastic.
- 17:41Speaker 5: And I'm a pretty well traveled individual. I love traveling
- 17:44Speaker 5: the world. I love visiting new places. And what I saw,
- 17:50Speaker 5: just specifically for the Las Vegas piece of it. I
- 17:54Speaker 5: remember I'm sitting on the sidelines with my other sideline reporter,
- 17:57Speaker 5: Missy Matthews, and Missy and I are looking around the state.
- 18:00Speaker 5: I'm like, man, it's like I can't tell what our
- 18:03Speaker 5: attendance is because everybody's wearing black, right, because the Raiders
- 18:08Speaker 5: are black and silver. We're black and gold, and a
- 18:10Speaker 5: lot of people wore their home jerseys, right, the black
- 18:12Speaker 5: one like you have in the background their day. So
- 18:14Speaker 5: you're trying to look in the crowd of this humongous city.
- 18:17Speaker 5: It's a beautiful stadium, by the way, Allegiant is at
- 18:19Speaker 5: was one of my favorite stadiums in the entire NFL.
- 18:23Speaker 5: You're looking in the crowd and you're like, I can't
- 18:25Speaker 5: really tell, and then we both look at each other.
- 18:27Speaker 5: We're like, let's wait till they intro the Steelers. And
- 18:31Speaker 5: when they intro the Steelers, you saw every terrible towel
- 18:34Speaker 5: come out, and you're like, Okay, we have more fans
- 18:38Speaker 5: in this stadium than the home team. That is official
- 18:41Speaker 5: right now, and you heard it. Forcing a home team
- 18:44Speaker 5: to go into a silent count is probably one of
- 18:46Speaker 5: the most demoralizing and I would call damning type of
- 18:50Speaker 5: indictments against the team, and they're following. So I'm like,
- 18:53Speaker 5: so for Raider fans, don't claim your Raider fans when
- 18:56Speaker 5: you don't sell out your own stadium and you allow
- 18:58Speaker 5: the Steelers nation to come upon your statedium and take
- 19:03Speaker 5: it over. But we've done that in multiple places. We
- 19:06Speaker 5: do it in Jacksonville consistently. We travel to Arizona, and
- 19:10Speaker 5: Arizona has more Steeler fans where I live, like, we
- 19:13Speaker 5: have the largest Steeler bar in the country outside of
- 19:17Speaker 5: Pittsburgh right here in Arizona. So when you have this
- 19:20Speaker 5: San Diego when they were when the Chargers were there,
- 19:23Speaker 5: Steeler fans would overtake. So to have that type of
- 19:26Speaker 5: consistent you know, market and fan base and other stadiums
- 19:30Speaker 5: and be able to take them over and have the
- 19:31Speaker 5: mayor of a city telling their fans, please don't sell
- 19:34Speaker 5: your tickets to Steeler fans. That that's pretty special and
- 19:37Speaker 5: that just lets you know that not everybody can tout that,
- 19:40Speaker 5: and everybody can say that about their teams, and that's
- 19:43Speaker 5: what makes the Steelers in the NFL one of the
- 19:45Speaker 5: best travel fan bases around the world.
- 19:49Speaker 2: It's one of your impressions of the twenty twenty three
- 19:52Speaker 2: Steelers team so far.
- 19:54Speaker 5: So I always say this for me, I always give
- 19:57Speaker 5: it four games like a month snapshot less we know
- 20:00Speaker 5: kind of what the identity of this team is. But
- 20:03Speaker 5: where we stand right now going into that fourth week
- 20:05Speaker 5: is we're ascending. Right Week one was terrible. I mean
- 20:09Speaker 5: it was bad against San Francisco, but then you saw
- 20:12Speaker 5: the fight and the dog in a rivalry game against
- 20:14Speaker 5: the Browns, and you saw us overcoming. It took a
- 20:17Speaker 5: combination effort of offense mixed with defensive scoring to win
- 20:21Speaker 5: that game, but we did that. And then of course
- 20:23Speaker 5: you go and you have the Sunday Night game where
- 20:24Speaker 5: you saw some rhythm with the offense, but the one
- 20:27Speaker 5: thing that was consistent was the defense's dynamic plays right
- 20:30Speaker 5: interceptions and sacks. Those are the big head turners and
- 20:35Speaker 5: change of momentum type of plays in a game, and
- 20:38Speaker 5: they kept consistently that and the offense got more confidence
- 20:40Speaker 5: throughout that game. So I really expect that by the
- 20:43Speaker 5: end of the season we'll have a good picture of
- 20:44Speaker 5: what this team is. I like where they're at. I
- 20:46Speaker 5: like the fact that they're getting better and better because
- 20:49Speaker 5: I don't want my team peaking in the first four
- 20:51Speaker 5: weeks and season. I need them peaking in December. And
- 20:54Speaker 5: I think as long as this trajectory stays in that
- 20:57Speaker 5: type of momentum area where it's getting better every single
- 20:59Speaker 5: week and they're getting a little bit more cohesive, the
- 21:02Speaker 5: bigger plays are happening more frequently in the game, I
- 21:05Speaker 5: think we're going in a good place. I think for Tinny,
- 21:07Speaker 5: the biggest thing that we did switching from primarily shotgun
- 21:11Speaker 5: in those first two games to going more under center
- 21:14Speaker 5: gives him more comfortability because you could run the ball
- 21:17Speaker 5: more effectively, and also your play action passing and that
- 21:21Speaker 5: type of anonymity gives a greater depth to the offense.
- 21:25Speaker 5: So I really like where we're at now. It's still
- 21:27Speaker 5: progressing in the direction of I want if they haven't
- 21:29Speaker 5: plateaued and they haven't regressed.
- 21:33Speaker 4: I'm just wondering, Max, you know one person that sort
- 21:36Speaker 4: of flew under the radar so far this season. So far,
- 21:38Speaker 4: he hasn't really got that much of a chance because
- 21:40Speaker 4: of how Don Moore Junior has been planning Ron up
- 21:43Speaker 4: Jones our first round peck. What advice would you give
- 21:45Speaker 4: him at the stage of his career because obviously he
- 21:47Speaker 4: hasn't got many not much opportunity because of highwell Don
- 21:51Speaker 4: Moore has been playing. What advice would you give him
- 21:53Speaker 4: as a young young guy coming into the team. Would
- 21:55Speaker 4: you just tell him keep his head up or what
- 21:57Speaker 4: sort of like tackle deil advice would you give just
- 22:00Speaker 4: going ahead with fifth career.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Well, one of the biggest things, and you know, the
- 22:04Speaker 5: blessing I have is I get to go to training
- 22:06Speaker 5: camp with the team, so I'm with them all the time.
- 22:09Speaker 5: So I got a chance to talk with Roderick on
- 22:11Speaker 5: a couple of different occasions. But the biggest thing is
- 22:14Speaker 5: is just continue to refine your skill set, continue to
- 22:18Speaker 5: work on the things on a daily basis. Right, those
- 22:21Speaker 5: deeds have a cumulative effect over time. Because my first
- 22:25Speaker 5: year I didn't start. I was a third round pick.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I know, he's a first round pick and we jumped
- 22:30Speaker 5: up to get him. But for the offensive line, it's
- 22:32Speaker 5: a little bit different. Right. You don't get Joe Thomas
- 22:34Speaker 5: and Jake Long and these guys who are immediate day
- 22:37Speaker 5: one stars and they started every single game with their career.
- 22:39Speaker 5: That doesn't happen for most guys. You play a position
- 22:42Speaker 5: you're not supposed to play at first normally, and then
- 22:45Speaker 5: you work your way into what your role is over time.
- 22:49Speaker 5: And for an offensive lineman, you don't really mature into
- 22:51Speaker 5: your offensive lineman what I like to call big boy
- 22:54Speaker 5: body until about year four or five. So those closer
- 22:58Speaker 5: you get to year four or five, less STAPs you've
- 23:00Speaker 5: taken before then, where it hasn't been out of necessity,
- 23:05Speaker 5: the better you're going to be over time. One of
- 23:08Speaker 5: one of the great legends that you know, I looked
- 23:10Speaker 5: up to, Jackie Slater. Jackie Slater played nineteen years in
- 23:13Speaker 5: the NFL. His first seven years he was on the
- 23:16Speaker 5: practice squad, and then the last twelve he was a
- 23:19Speaker 5: dominant left tackle as a Hall of Famer, you know.
- 23:22Speaker 5: So you know, I think of for offensive unlike other
- 23:25Speaker 5: positions like quarterback, you're trying to get him out there
- 23:27Speaker 5: earlier because cap issues, money whatever. Running backs there's only
- 23:30Speaker 5: a small window because of the amount of physicality that
- 23:34Speaker 5: comes in the position. Linebackers, same thing, but for offensive
- 23:38Speaker 5: and defensive lineman, it takes time for them to mature
- 23:41Speaker 5: into that body, and also to understand that you're playing
- 23:44Speaker 5: against grown men across you that have bills and taxes
- 23:48Speaker 5: and all kinds of other worries on their mind, and
- 23:50Speaker 5: they're trying to provide for their families, and you're a
- 23:52Speaker 5: young guy that's just starting on that road. It's okay
- 23:55Speaker 5: to take a little time because I look at what
- 23:58Speaker 5: I have wanted Roger Jones out there weekly one against
- 24:00Speaker 5: Nick Bosa, no, absolutely not. What I want him against
- 24:04Speaker 5: Miles Garrett week two, absolutely not. I want him to
- 24:06Speaker 5: mature and see it so that he can get ramp
- 24:10Speaker 5: himself up for those moments so that when it does
- 24:13Speaker 5: come the time, he's a finished product and he's ready
- 24:16Speaker 5: to go. I always say this to my to my
- 24:18Speaker 5: friends I said, what meal tastes better one that comes
- 24:22Speaker 5: from a microwave or one that comes from the oven.
- 24:26Speaker 5: And I love an oven baked meal. You know what
- 24:28Speaker 5: I'm saying. I love oven baked turkey. I don't want
- 24:31Speaker 5: microwave turkey. Microwave turkey is dry, it doesn't have taste
- 24:34Speaker 5: of texture. But when you have it in the oven,
- 24:36Speaker 5: you can baste it a little bit. You can chant,
- 24:38Speaker 5: you can you can roast it. That's the more flavorful
- 24:41Speaker 5: and that's the more impactful and that's the thing that
- 24:42Speaker 5: sticks in your mind more and you want to go
- 24:44Speaker 5: back to that. So I call it the oven effect
- 24:48Speaker 5: versus the microwave in a microwave society. It's okay that
- 24:51Speaker 5: he's sitting there, but he's not getting he's not getting
- 24:53Speaker 5: down in himself and he's always ready which I think
- 24:56Speaker 5: is a great trait for him to half.
- 24:58Speaker 1: That might be the best thing I've heard of, the
- 24:59Speaker 1: Paul cost of Seasons Afar and up microwave thing. I
- 25:01Speaker 1: love it. And last round of interrogation slash questions Mac.
- 25:07Speaker 1: First off, London games start this week. Get and look
- 25:09Speaker 1: even those seeders aren't playing and they've got three games
- 25:12Speaker 1: in London, two games in Germany over the next few
- 25:14Speaker 1: weeks on we hope and we're excited to see hopefully
- 25:16Speaker 1: a lot of theaters fans at Wembley this Sunday regardless.
- 25:19Speaker 1: And did you ever have a chance to play and
- 25:21Speaker 1: an international game? And if not, is that something that
- 25:24Speaker 1: you regret not being able to do, because it's exploded
- 25:26Speaker 1: now since he retired.
- 25:28Speaker 5: I wholeheartedly regret the opportunity because you know, the year
- 25:31Speaker 5: Steelers went and played overseas was literally the year I
- 25:35Speaker 5: left the team, and I was like, really, they played
- 25:37Speaker 5: on Thanksgiving and they played in London in the same year.
- 25:41Speaker 5: I was like, I waited my whole career. I wanted
- 25:44Speaker 5: to play overseas for a game, and literally the year
- 25:47Speaker 5: that I left, they did both of those things. So
- 25:50Speaker 5: that's one of my great regrets. I never got a
- 25:52Speaker 5: chance to play a game physically in London or overseas
- 25:55Speaker 5: in general. I would love to broadcast a game now
- 26:00Speaker 5: now that I'm in my other career, I want to
- 26:01Speaker 5: broadcast the game overseas for sure. But it's one of
- 26:05Speaker 5: those things where when you get to take the show
- 26:07Speaker 5: on the road, so to speak, right, and the game
- 26:09Speaker 5: of football on the road and you get to introduce
- 26:12Speaker 5: it to a new population that as a player or
- 26:16Speaker 5: as an organizational member, you've never been exposed to. And
- 26:20Speaker 5: to see that response is special. It's something that it
- 26:25Speaker 5: lets you know that the game is bigger than your city,
- 26:29Speaker 5: your town, your state, your area. It lets you know
- 26:33Speaker 5: that this game truly is a global game. We hear
- 26:35Speaker 5: about it right as players. You hear, oh, this is
- 26:37Speaker 5: a global game. But it's like, but no other countries
- 26:39Speaker 5: are really playing it to the level that we're playing it.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Whereas you think of football or soccer, it's played everywhere
- 26:45Speaker 5: in the world, right and even for basketball. Basketball is
- 26:48Speaker 5: played across the world. You see the Pan American games,
- 26:51Speaker 5: you see you know, the Olympics, you see all these
- 26:54Speaker 5: events where it's represented and your sports that represent it.
- 26:56Speaker 5: So when you get a chance to see it on
- 26:59Speaker 5: that international scale and level, you see the impact of
- 27:03Speaker 5: nfl UK, of the International Player Portal bringing guys over
- 27:08Speaker 5: from other countries to experience the sport. You know, one
- 27:11Speaker 5: of my one of my good buddies we had we
- 27:12Speaker 5: were part of the International Player Exchange, Marvin Allen who
- 27:16Speaker 5: now works for nfl UK MERR one of my boys.
- 27:20Speaker 5: He lived. He lived in the same apartment complex with me.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Me and Marvy used to kick it all the time,
- 27:24Speaker 5: and Marvin coming over from London and being a receiver
- 27:27Speaker 5: and being on our squad for two years, you get
- 27:30Speaker 5: to learn some of those things and now to see
- 27:32Speaker 5: it grown to where the levels that's at now is tremendous.
- 27:35Speaker 5: And then to have friends who are working on the
- 27:38Speaker 5: international side, and you know, I've I've gotten a chance
- 27:41Speaker 5: to work with some of the ipp or international player
- 27:43Speaker 5: portal players that have come over from Europe, that have
- 27:46Speaker 5: come over from Germany, London, Africa, Australia, and you get
- 27:52Speaker 5: to have those guys physically in the building and you
- 27:53Speaker 5: get to talk with them and see their feelings about it.
- 27:56Speaker 5: It's pretty special and pretty phenomenal. So it's something I
- 27:59Speaker 5: hoped to cross one thing off of the list to
- 28:02Speaker 5: promote the goodwill of the sport abroad outside of the
- 28:05Speaker 5: national conference.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Actually at that game and Wembley Max that you referred
- 28:11Speaker 2: to when the Staters played the Vikings, and that was
- 28:13Speaker 2: probably for the best that you weren't there, because it
- 28:15Speaker 2: was it was pretty bad from what I from what
- 28:18Speaker 2: I recalled, it was not a good day for a
- 28:20Speaker 2: big band of the Steters.
- 28:21Speaker 5: And this and Max.
- 28:23Speaker 2: You've won two super Bowl titles in your career, and
- 28:25Speaker 2: you know most NFL players can only.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Really driven about even being winning one.
- 28:30Speaker 2: So can you tell us, you know, can you even
- 28:33Speaker 2: put into words what that's gonna like as a player?
- 28:38Speaker 5: A childhood fantasy fulfilled? Right, because that's what we look
- 28:43Speaker 5: at it. It's fantasy until it becomes a reality. And
- 28:47Speaker 5: there takes a lot to get to those places, right,
- 28:51Speaker 5: because this is the ultimate team sport. You know, it's
- 28:54Speaker 5: not just eleven guys on the field. You have sixty
- 28:57Speaker 5: one guys at the time, and now that's ballooned up
- 28:59Speaker 5: to about sixty eight guys on a roster. But it
- 29:02Speaker 5: takes all sixty one of those guys working together, regular
- 29:07Speaker 5: squad practice, squad management, coaching staff, front office, nutritionists, the
- 29:14Speaker 5: chefs in the kitchen, right, all of these people, your chiropractice,
- 29:18Speaker 5: your medical team. It takes a concerted effort by everybody
- 29:22Speaker 5: to get there. And then when you do get to
- 29:24Speaker 5: that moment where you're at a super Bowl, it's almost
- 29:29Speaker 5: like you're pinching yourself because funny enough, I always tell
- 29:33Speaker 5: this story my earliest super Bowl memory where I actually
- 29:36Speaker 5: paid attention that understood was actually Super Bowl thirty, which
- 29:39Speaker 5: was Steelers Cowboys, And I remember I was at by
- 29:42Speaker 5: Budding William Whitehead's house. We're playing basketball in the front
- 29:45Speaker 5: yard and we come in for the Super Bowl and
- 29:48Speaker 5: I'm watching the Steelers and the Cowboys play, and I
- 29:52Speaker 5: just that was a first thought, the first time I
- 29:53Speaker 5: ever thought that, Man, I want to do that one day,
- 29:56Speaker 5: first time, first time because I wasn't allowed to play
- 29:58Speaker 5: football up toil that point eighth grade, and then I
- 30:01Speaker 5: finally get to play in high school because I was
- 30:02Speaker 5: too big, funny enough to play football at a younger age.
- 30:06Speaker 5: And so to have that moment and then for it
- 30:10Speaker 5: to then be the Super Bowl in my second year,
- 30:15Speaker 5: and to tie it even further for the Detroit experience.
- 30:19Speaker 5: The only other time the Super Bowls played in Detroit
- 30:21Speaker 5: was in nineteen eighty two. I was born two weeks
- 30:25Speaker 5: before that Super Bowl. Furthermore, my father, Ross Browner, rest
- 30:31Speaker 5: in peace. He played for the Cincinnati Bengals. It was
- 30:35Speaker 5: the Bengals forty nine Ers Super Bowl. My father is
- 30:39Speaker 5: the only man to ever sack Joe Montana in a
- 30:41Speaker 5: Super Bowl. In the four tries that he had and
- 30:44Speaker 5: we're practicing in the Pontiac Silver Dome where my father
- 30:48Speaker 5: had his Super Bowl and I call him right at
- 30:50Speaker 5: the spot where he sacked his college teammate and friend
- 30:54Speaker 5: in the Super Bowl. And so that was truly emotional.
- 30:59Speaker 5: That was the things I would never have expected to
- 31:02Speaker 5: have happened to me. And to then get to that
- 31:05Speaker 5: point where I'm doing the same thing my father did
- 31:09Speaker 5: and I'm realizing a childhood dream from eighth grade and
- 31:12Speaker 5: it literally happened ten years later was Super Bowl thirty.
- 31:15Speaker 5: When I saw it, I'm playing in Super Bowl forty
- 31:18Speaker 5: It was just surreal. It was surreal, it was overwhelming.
- 31:21Speaker 5: And then to actually go and win that game, man,
- 31:26Speaker 5: I mean the emotions that I had. My mom's was
- 31:29Speaker 5: born and raised in Detroit. You know, my father's there,
- 31:33Speaker 5: my uncles, my aunts, everybody's there. And to celebrate that
- 31:37Speaker 5: achievement was something I'll never forget for the rest of
- 31:40Speaker 5: my life. It was truly special. And the Super Bowl
- 31:42Speaker 5: forty three happened to be the closest place of my hometown.
- 31:45Speaker 5: I grew up in Orlando, Florida. Game was played in Tampa,
- 31:47Speaker 5: right across Interstate four, one side to the other. So
- 31:50Speaker 5: I have very personal emotional connections to both of these
- 31:53Speaker 5: Super Bowls because it was like a culmination of like
- 31:57Speaker 5: my life. Because it was my father mother that was
- 32:01Speaker 5: for them in the first one, right, uh a nod
- 32:03Speaker 5: to them. This one was for me. This was going
- 32:05Speaker 5: back to my hometown where my friends, my buddies and
- 32:08Speaker 5: everybody could see me playing this game. And then of
- 32:12Speaker 5: course we win it against the Cardinals.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it just even sounds like even hearing that story,
- 32:19Speaker 4: it sounds like it was it was written in the
- 32:20Speaker 4: stars fear not just to win one Super Bowl, but two.
- 32:23Speaker 4: It's actually crazy. It's sort of PENSI miss out vagrant
- 32:25Speaker 4: here or not. But yeah, just just finally Max And
- 32:28Speaker 4: obviously we've got the Houston Taxins this weekend. And I
- 32:31Speaker 4: was saying, like at the start of the seasons, parentially
- 32:35Speaker 4: again the most Staters fans maybe put down as a
- 32:37Speaker 4: certain w on the calendar, and maybe a couple few
- 32:41Speaker 4: weeks into the season, it's fur de sized, not that
- 32:43Speaker 4: straight straate. It's been fantastic so far. Just what's your
- 32:46Speaker 4: opinions on the game. Do you think we started a
- 32:48Speaker 4: good chance in stopping them or do you think it's
- 32:50Speaker 4: you know, potentially could be. You know, it's a tight
- 32:52Speaker 4: enough game. What's what's your opinion on not?
- 32:54Speaker 5: So I look at it like like you said, I
- 32:56Speaker 5: think c J. Stroud's playing phenomenal. I mean for a
- 32:58Speaker 5: rookie quarterback. He's playing the best out of all the
- 33:00Speaker 5: rookies when you think about the guys drafted in front
- 33:03Speaker 5: of him, and think about where Anthony Richard and Bryce
- 33:05Speaker 5: Young both injured right now from their early play and c. J.
- 33:10Speaker 5: Strou has been trusted to throw the ball forty plus
- 33:12Speaker 5: times a game. Right he has one hundred and twenty
- 33:14Speaker 5: one pass attempts without an interception the receiving corps what
- 33:20Speaker 5: you say, I mean Tank Dell, another rookie is coming alive.
- 33:23Speaker 5: He's playing really well for them, and he's providing a
- 33:26Speaker 5: spark in the passing game. Their run game is a
- 33:29Speaker 5: little less to be desired. Offensive line's banged up right now.
- 33:32Speaker 5: You know, starting left tackle Larmy Tunsel is injured, Josh
- 33:35Speaker 5: Jones is out, So now you really only have one
- 33:37Speaker 5: tack along the roster outside of your practice squad. So
- 33:41Speaker 5: I look at that and I say advantage Steelers defense
- 33:44Speaker 5: right Offensively, there's no names that jump out on the
- 33:47Speaker 5: deepense side of the ball outside of their first round
- 33:49Speaker 5: pick Will Anderson. But you have some guys that have
- 33:53Speaker 5: been around the league that are older veteran Sheldon Rankins
- 33:55Speaker 5: comes by, Blake Cashman, Denzel Perryman, Like you have some best,
- 34:00Speaker 5: but there's no like, oh my god, there's a T. J.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Wattle on the other side of the ball for the
- 34:04Speaker 5: for the first time in four weeks, I actually say
- 34:06Speaker 5: there's not a premiere pass rusher on the other side
- 34:09Speaker 5: of the ball. We've we've gone I guess, three of
- 34:10Speaker 5: probably the best five in the leak so far in
- 34:14Speaker 5: consecutive weeks. But it's one of those games that I
- 34:16Speaker 5: call a trap game. Like mentally, you can bring yourself down.
- 34:19Speaker 5: You can take it for granted. You look at the paper,
- 34:22Speaker 5: You're like, ah, what are these guys. They're just a
- 34:25Speaker 5: bunch of guys. But those are the games that are
- 34:28Speaker 5: most dangerous if you don't come in with the right mindset.
- 34:31Speaker 5: You know, my, my, my, my analysts, my Color Analyst hosts.
- 34:36Speaker 5: Craig Wolfley loves to say this. He's like, if you
- 34:39Speaker 5: can't beat up on the stiffs when they show up
- 34:41Speaker 5: on the on the roster, then you are the stiff.
- 34:44Speaker 5: And that's one of the things you always say, don't
- 34:46Speaker 5: take anybody for granted. So I don't want them to
- 34:49Speaker 5: take anybody for granted. Each of these wins have been
- 34:51Speaker 5: hard fought. So if you go in with that same
- 34:54Speaker 5: mentality and you handle the business that I know you're
- 34:56Speaker 5: capable of, it should be a victory. But at at
- 35:00Speaker 5: the same time, if you do like Jacksonville did and
- 35:03Speaker 5: you kind of take this team for granted, you think,
- 35:05Speaker 5: oh man, they've been they've been a dumpster fire for
- 35:07Speaker 5: the last three years because of all the situations surrounding
- 35:10Speaker 5: the organization, the player transactions, and you focus on that
- 35:15Speaker 5: and don't focus on this current squad, you will get meat,
- 35:17Speaker 5: just like Jacksonville did at home. But I really feel
- 35:20Speaker 5: like the Steelers have a really good chance to win
- 35:22Speaker 5: this game. You know, you look at the assisition and
- 35:24Speaker 5: this is the next step in the progression. If you
- 35:27Speaker 5: can show me that you can handle business on a
- 35:29Speaker 5: game that I feel you should win, and that trajectory
- 35:32Speaker 5: stays up here, that means we're moving the right direction
- 35:34Speaker 5: as a team. So and we're closer to seeing that
- 35:37Speaker 5: team in the preseason than we are further away from
- 35:39Speaker 5: that team in the preseason.
- 35:42Speaker 1: And for people listening, you'll be able to hear mox
- 35:45Speaker 1: Welfe the whole team on off the ball on the
- 35:48Speaker 1: otb op with the play by play this weekend in Ireland.
- 35:52Speaker 1: If you are going to listen to the game, please
- 35:53Speaker 1: feel free to do so. Listen to under that football
- 35:56Speaker 1: and they kept me going at two am. I'm sure
- 35:58Speaker 1: the will to me. I'll agree there as well. That
- 36:01Speaker 1: was special, man. That was pretty awesome to be honest with.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I'm sure we'll get shot into
- 36:06Speaker 1: some point this season, maybe in Dublin or at some
- 36:09Speaker 1: other point two knows, but on behalf of these guys
- 36:12Speaker 1: here and just all the fans in Ireland, thank you
- 36:15Speaker 1: very very much for your time and wish you and
- 36:17Speaker 1: the whole team the very very best look for the
- 36:18Speaker 1: rest of the season.
- 36:20Speaker 5: Nah, thank you guys very much. I really appreciate the
- 36:22Speaker 5: time and this is awesome. So to all of Steelers
- 36:25Speaker 5: Nation in Ireland, you know we're thinking of you and
- 36:28Speaker 5: we hope hopefully we bring home a w for you guys.
- 36:30Speaker 5: You guys can keep celebrating of course. To Michael, Jimmy
- 36:33Speaker 5: and Dave, thank you guys. For having me on the
- 36:34Speaker 5: pod today.
- 36:38Speaker 1: One an honor it is to have Black Starks on
- 36:39Speaker 1: the Irish Singers podcast and props to Jimmy English, but
- 36:42Speaker 1: push me again on Jimmy. As a lifelong Seniorslan, you
- 36:46Speaker 1: must be buzzing to have Max on. What a great guy.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Michael, And you know, he's such a legend
- 36:53Speaker 2: within the Steelers organization. He's won obviously two Super Bowls
- 36:57Speaker 2: and including our most recent one against the against the Cardinals,
- 37:02Speaker 2: so it's just fantastic to speak with him, to hear
- 37:05Speaker 2: the stories he had and obviously he's back involved now
- 37:08Speaker 2: with the Steelers on the broadcast team, so he's kind
- 37:11Speaker 2: of in the same field as we are, so to
- 37:14Speaker 2: get his perspective and insider knowledge on the Steelers is
- 37:18Speaker 2: just fantastic. What a what a sound guy. And hopefully
- 37:22Speaker 2: we can we can convince him to come across the
- 37:23Speaker 2: pond to Dublin in November for for our watch party.
- 37:27Speaker 2: So yeah, no, fantastic to chat to chat to Max
- 37:30Speaker 2: and have him on the podcast.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Please God please call TVC look award to seeing who's
- 37:35Speaker 1: going to come over very soon, very shortly as well.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Keep your eyes keep your eyes peedle the Steeds arg
- 37:39Speaker 1: for that DVE. That was pretty an awesome isn't it.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Oh yeah, absolute legend of a guy. And it's a
- 37:44Speaker 4: legend for the Steelers as well. You know, he's as
- 37:47Speaker 4: Jimmy said, he's won two Super Bowls. I mean, if
- 37:50Speaker 4: you go to the end of your career and you
- 37:51Speaker 4: have any Super Bowls at all, it's a accompliment. Never
- 37:53Speaker 4: might have him too, So obviously a massive integral part
- 37:56Speaker 4: of that team as well, and obviously good tearing about
- 38:00Speaker 4: his relationship with Ben and stuff.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Coming out of the same draft class.
- 38:02Speaker 4: So yeah, down derf gay and obviously fantastic having them
- 38:07Speaker 4: on as well, and getting a bit of an inside
- 38:08Speaker 4: as well, So yeah, fantastic.
- 38:10Speaker 5: Hopefully we get them.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Over I'll start lighting the candles talking about Ireland and
- 38:16Speaker 1: talking about over here. It's been been a weird week
- 38:19Speaker 1: storm aug and this took a hold of everywhere. It
- 38:21Speaker 1: was a bit mad, and hopefully the Steelers defense can
- 38:24Speaker 1: take a hold of these Taxans. Jimmy as mobe go
- 38:26Speaker 1: in the week four the season NRG Stadium and home
- 38:29Speaker 1: game for the Houston Texans away game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Texans having a really, really good game last week offensively
- 38:34Speaker 1: against Jacksonville Jaguars. This will be a test, Jimmy, I
- 38:37Speaker 1: think with when you've got Tak doll Andy Good Collins
- 38:40Speaker 1: and he just tries playing really, really well, I can't
- 38:43Speaker 1: wait to see how our defense is going to go
- 38:44Speaker 1: up against them. I guess just for me, cheeess lot.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Starting with Jimmy looking ahead the week four, what are
- 38:50Speaker 1: your faults in this game? And who do you think
- 38:52Speaker 1: is gonna come on top?
- 38:54Speaker 2: I think at a minute, Michael, looking at the injury
- 38:56Speaker 2: report on both sides this morning, I think the Steelers
- 38:59Speaker 2: have this advantage considering the form that our defensive front
- 39:02Speaker 2: is in.
- 39:04Speaker 3: TJ.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Water Course is currently the league sack leader with six,
- 39:08Speaker 2: and I think he's gonna have an absolute field day
- 39:10Speaker 2: against the depleted line of the Texans.
- 39:12Speaker 3: I know Laramie Tunsel and a few.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Others showed up on the injury of work this morning,
- 39:18Speaker 2: so I think that will definitely give us the advantage
- 39:20Speaker 2: on defense. On offense, we have to keep building on
- 39:23Speaker 2: the positive momentum of last week. Kenny Pickett has to
- 39:26Speaker 2: keep getting into keep connecting with its receivers and continue
- 39:31Speaker 2: to develop that relationship. In that report, like I said
- 39:34Speaker 2: earlier on in the week, I'd love to see a
- 39:36Speaker 2: bit more of a run game be established. I think
- 39:38Speaker 2: that's that's so vital, especially early on in the season,
- 39:41Speaker 2: that we get the run game humming.
- 39:43Speaker 3: And yeah, I.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Think it's gonna I think it's gonna be close, but
- 39:46Speaker 2: I think eventually the Steilers are going to pull away
- 39:48Speaker 2: come middle middle of the third, late fourth quarter, and
- 39:50Speaker 2: I think we'll just be I think our defense is
- 39:52Speaker 2: going to overmatch the Houston Texans offense.
- 39:56Speaker 3: I think they're gonna be too much for for the
- 39:58Speaker 3: Rooughie quarterback.
- 40:00Speaker 2: I think we're going to absolutely get inside his head
- 40:02Speaker 2: earlier on early on, and for some errors from him.
- 40:06Speaker 2: But it's going to be a great game and I'm
- 40:08Speaker 2: just looking forward to seeing what the Steilers can ply
- 40:10Speaker 2: out of the bag in Week four big time.
- 40:13Speaker 1: And like the Texans have a scored I think fifty
- 40:18Speaker 1: seven points in the last two games day, so it's
- 40:20Speaker 1: obviously going to be imparative to have the defense show up.
- 40:23Speaker 1: But look, you would expect on Jimmy's mentioned there today
- 40:26Speaker 1: for the defense to show up, but not to repeat
- 40:29Speaker 1: Jimmy as well. The wrong game is something I'd love
- 40:31Speaker 1: to see this week, I think Kenny goes out and
- 40:34Speaker 1: it's even better this week. I reckon, see, there's win
- 40:36Speaker 1: this game by ten to fourteen points and not there's
- 40:39Speaker 1: your Michael Jinks, folks. I think here's where the chinks starts.
- 40:43Speaker 1: If I started saying stuff like this here, it's funny
- 40:46Speaker 1: because TJ's Robert j J is going to be honored
- 40:49Speaker 1: at half time. It's it's a big day for the
- 40:51Speaker 1: what hopefully TJ has a better day with all jeers
- 40:54Speaker 1: back to the JJ. But what's your faults in this
- 40:56Speaker 1: game on something?
- 40:59Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, at the start of the year, I
- 41:01Speaker 4: think maybe a lot of us mark the taxes down
- 41:04Speaker 4: as a win after there, like season started. I don't
- 41:08Speaker 4: think we can we can take it for granted anymore. Mike,
- 41:11Speaker 4: They're they're a solid team.
- 41:12Speaker 1: C A.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Stroud, He's had a pretty promising start of the season.
- 41:15Speaker 4: I'm just saying he hasn't even turned the ball over
- 41:17Speaker 4: for a rookie. That's in the first three games. That's
- 41:19Speaker 4: actually incredible when you think of it. He's the only
- 41:22Speaker 4: quarterbacks to sorry, he's only only four quarterbacks have actually
- 41:27Speaker 4: thrown more passing the yards and passing attempts again, for
- 41:29Speaker 4: a rookie, that's that's sensational. If there is maybe one weakness,
- 41:34Speaker 4: as Jimmy was matching, and they have a lot of
- 41:35Speaker 4: injuries on their own line, Larmie tounsels a massive loss
- 41:39Speaker 4: and I see as well he's been sacked the eleven
- 41:41Speaker 4: times in three games.
- 41:42Speaker 3: So if there is one.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Thing we can maybe lean on, it's probably going to
- 41:45Speaker 4: be that defense been able to get to him and
- 41:47Speaker 4: put a put of pressure on him. And as well
- 41:48Speaker 4: as that, the fact he hasn't thrown any interceptions. I
- 41:51Speaker 4: think he's gonna guarantee you throw one in the next one.
- 41:53Speaker 4: He's a lot of averages he's gonna have to. And
- 41:55Speaker 4: as we've mentioned in the podcast earlier in the week,
- 41:57Speaker 4: we we don't hesitate and turn the ball over. It's
- 41:59Speaker 4: one of our strength. So and I'm in the same
- 42:03Speaker 4: boat as Jimmy and and yourself. As you say, I
- 42:05Speaker 4: think we could potastically win this by double digits. But
- 42:08Speaker 4: again it's it's it's hard to say. I think the
- 42:10Speaker 4: taxes have actually opened out his favorites as well, which
- 42:12Speaker 4: is a bit strange. But not being too cocky, but
- 42:15Speaker 4: I think we we should, we should come in out
- 42:18Speaker 4: of Houston with a W and hopefully get to three
- 42:20Speaker 4: in one. But I just imagine about the wrong game
- 42:22Speaker 4: as well. The wrong game is something I think was
- 42:24Speaker 4: it's going to come apart this week, and obviously Canny Pecket,
- 42:28Speaker 4: I think it might have a breakout like game, although
- 42:30Speaker 4: he was decent in the last game. I think potastally
- 42:32Speaker 4: could eaven Malgan through over for three hundred yards. That's
- 42:35Speaker 4: maybe a bul prediction itself, but hopefully not not a
- 42:38Speaker 4: not idioticy But what did you say that word? Is
- 42:41Speaker 4: it idiotic or something like that.
- 42:43Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Yeah, hopefully it's not coming across the guad. Hopefully it's
- 42:47Speaker 4: just coming across as optimistic. But yeah, and I'll just
- 42:50Speaker 4: jump in here with a prediction. I'm gonna go Steelers
- 42:53Speaker 4: twenty eight, Paxson's nineteen, then go bring it to the bank.
- 42:59Speaker 2: That's still that's that's still too close for comfort for me, though, Dave.
- 43:02Speaker 2: I mean, I think with the firepower that we began
- 43:05Speaker 2: to see last week, I mean Calvin Austin, I'm still
- 43:09Speaker 2: amazed by that catch that he that he made and
- 43:12Speaker 2: just that deep ball connection from Kenny. So I'd be
- 43:14Speaker 2: hoping to see the Steelers display a bit more offensive
- 43:18Speaker 2: pizzazz for once of a better word, and really start
- 43:21Speaker 2: to show up. I mean, I think Jalen Warren for me,
- 43:25Speaker 2: is not even the second string running back anymore. He's
- 43:28Speaker 2: it's one and one a between himself and Nagie Harris.
- 43:32Speaker 2: I think we've seen him being added in more and
- 43:34Speaker 2: more incrementally over the past couple of weeks, and he's
- 43:37Speaker 2: he's a great outlier receiver for Kenny as well. So
- 43:40Speaker 2: I think it's time. Now it's week four, We've got
- 43:43Speaker 2: gotten over the.
- 43:43Speaker 7: Offensive struggles to the for for the large for the
- 43:47Speaker 7: most part, and I think now is the time where
- 43:49Speaker 7: we have to start doing some big things on offense
- 43:51Speaker 7: and stop making making the defense carry us the entire game.
- 43:56Speaker 1: You can watch the game of the weekend on Sunday
- 43:58Speaker 1: on NFL game Pass in Europe and if you're in Ireland,
