- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wire to hunts rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:08Speaker 1: your host, Spencer new Hearth. Welcome to Wire to hunts
- 0:15Speaker 1: rot Fresh Radio powered by First Light. I am Spencer
- 0:18Speaker 1: new Hearth and this week's episode of rought Fresh is
- 0:20Speaker 1: all about beating that September ship. Welcome to Wire to
- 0:38Speaker 1: Hunt's rout Fresh Radio and joining me on the podcast
- 0:42Speaker 1: this week to set the table for our September fift
- 0:45Speaker 1: episode is not Mark Kenyon, but instead it is the
- 0:49Speaker 1: best damn public Land white tail hunter I know, and
- 0:52Speaker 1: I've been introducing him that way for probably the last
- 0:54Speaker 1: five years, and that is Tony Peterson. How you doing, Tony,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm doing well, buddy. Thanks for having me on man. Yeah,
- 1:00Speaker 1: And uh, the reason I have you on to intro
- 1:03Speaker 1: this week is because this coming weekend you're gonna be
- 1:05Speaker 1: heading to Wisconsin for their deer opener, and so I
- 1:08Speaker 1: want to talk to you in advance about what that
- 1:11Speaker 1: haunt is going to look like. Um. Now, knowing you
- 1:14Speaker 1: as a do Tony, you don't have always these traditional
- 1:19Speaker 1: textbook early season white tail setups where you're fifteen ft
- 1:24Speaker 1: of a tree, on the edge of a bean field
- 1:27Speaker 1: in September, like most hunters are. Um, so what are
- 1:30Speaker 1: some of the setups going to look like for you
- 1:32Speaker 1: this weekend in Wisconsin. Well, I'm you know, I'm taking
- 1:35Speaker 1: one of my nine year old twin daughters. So it's
- 1:38Speaker 1: this does not look like a typical early season hunt.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I mean, we've got I've got several blinds out and
- 1:45Speaker 1: I do have a couple that are playing right on
- 1:47Speaker 1: the food source edges, but most of them are kind
- 1:51Speaker 1: of built into some sort of travel route or staging area,
- 1:56Speaker 1: playing off somebody else's food sore. So you know, maybe
- 1:59Speaker 1: a disc bean field or alfalfa field or something. But
- 2:03Speaker 1: we'll we'll be set up mostly in the woods. And
- 2:05Speaker 1: I kind of did that because you know, with a
- 2:07Speaker 1: with a kid in school, we only get to hunt
- 2:10Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday. I got you know, go over late
- 2:12Speaker 1: Friday night, come back Sunday night, and so we only
- 2:14Speaker 1: get four SIPs and I want to be able to
- 2:17Speaker 1: hunt those mornings. And so you know, it's typical field
- 2:20Speaker 1: that's set up, You're just not gonna hunt it in
- 2:22Speaker 1: the morning. And so I'm always looking for that opportunity
- 2:24Speaker 1: to get out there and sneak in and catch them
- 2:26Speaker 1: coming back from that food source before they go to bed.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So that's that's kind of how my setups look over there,
- 2:31Speaker 1: is you know, it's playing off those destination food sources,
- 2:34Speaker 1: but not necessarily right on top of them. I feel
- 2:37Speaker 1: like in the past that you've had a lot of
- 2:40Speaker 1: success hunting water this time of year. Is that going
- 2:43Speaker 1: to be a factor at all for this Wisconsin hunt? Nope,
- 2:46Speaker 1: even though you know other states are. You know, there's
- 2:49Speaker 1: a lot of drought going on and it's pretty dry
- 2:51Speaker 1: out there, and it would be a real good pattern
- 2:53Speaker 1: where we're at northern Wisconsin. There's water everywhere, and so
- 2:57Speaker 1: they're just it's just not the the top priority resource
- 3:02Speaker 1: over there because of just the abundance. And so we're
- 3:06Speaker 1: playing right off of food and travel this year. And
- 3:09Speaker 1: I know for this hunt and for other haunts, probably
- 3:12Speaker 1: for the next month, you're gonna be focused on staging areas.
- 3:15Speaker 1: How do you identify a staging area that you think
- 3:18Speaker 1: is going to be productive, especially in mid September, um,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you know, I'm just just walking in there. Part of
- 3:24Speaker 1: it goes back to the kind of march scouting as
- 3:27Speaker 1: a late winter scouting and identifying those spots with some
- 3:29Speaker 1: rubs and stuff. And then you know, I was just
- 3:32Speaker 1: in there last weekend looking around, just kind of finalizing
- 3:35Speaker 1: everything and started to see some rubs and started to
- 3:38Speaker 1: see some sign and you just kind of read it, go, Okay, well,
- 3:41Speaker 1: there's a there's an alfalfa field yards away from this spot,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and they got across the road. They're not gonna like that,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and so they're gonna probably do that in the dark.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So where are they going to set up to browse
- 3:51Speaker 1: around make these rubs? And you know, play off of
- 3:55Speaker 1: that that pattern a little bit. So it's always just
- 3:58Speaker 1: like where do they feel comfortable in the However, where
- 4:00Speaker 1: they laying down signed right now? And where can we
- 4:04Speaker 1: get in so we're not spooking them and getting too
- 4:06Speaker 1: close to the bedding or you know, when we're leaving
- 4:09Speaker 1: too close to the food source. And so it's kind
- 4:11Speaker 1: of like a it's a moving target. But you know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: when they start laying down sign, it gets the heck
- 4:15Speaker 1: of a lot easier. And they're doing that right now now.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Last question here, Tony um. You said one of your
- 4:21Speaker 1: nine year old twin daughters is coming with you to hunt.
- 4:23Speaker 1: What's wrong with the other one? Why why don't you
- 4:25Speaker 1: want to take her hunting? She gets next, she gets
- 4:27Speaker 1: the following weekends, so they get I have to split
- 4:32Speaker 1: them up otherwise it's just a little bit too much.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And so they go. My one daughter is gonna go
- 4:37Speaker 1: this weekend, and then my other daughter will go the
- 4:39Speaker 1: next weekend. So really, my first two weeks of the season,
- 4:43Speaker 1: all I'm gonna be doing is guiding nine year old
- 4:44Speaker 1: and we I'm so excited because we're hunting. We're hunting
- 4:47Speaker 1: legal deer, and we've got tags for everything. So nobody,
- 4:51Speaker 1: nobody unless they come in spotted, nobody's safe. And is
- 4:54Speaker 1: there a coin flip situation? You joined straws or how
- 4:57Speaker 1: do you determine who gets what weekend? So because of
- 5:00Speaker 1: how turkey season worked out for him, my one, my
- 5:02Speaker 1: one daughter killed the first night and the other one
- 5:05Speaker 1: she worked your tail off and didn't get one. So
- 5:07Speaker 1: she got the choice to be all right, am I
- 5:10Speaker 1: choosing to go first for the da here and play
- 5:12Speaker 1: that card? Or am I going later? And so she
- 5:15Speaker 1: she picked the first weekend because her her sister had
- 5:18Speaker 1: killed the big turkey last ring. All right, Well, that's
- 5:21Speaker 1: that's some hot tip on parenting that you don't normally
- 5:24Speaker 1: get on this podcast. UM. Now, the idea is Tony,
- 5:27Speaker 1: that I'm gonna talk to you next weekend. We're gonna
- 5:29Speaker 1: hear how that haunt went. Uh see if your predictions
- 5:33Speaker 1: and and what you think is going to happen on
- 5:35Speaker 1: this hunt came true. Um. Until then, we have some
- 5:39Speaker 1: reading material for our listeners that that you're included in
- 5:42Speaker 1: this list. This is stuff that's relevant for right now
- 5:45Speaker 1: to white tail hunters. So if if you like what
- 5:47Speaker 1: you're hearing on this podcast and you want more information,
- 5:50Speaker 1: check our description of the podcast. You're gonna find these
- 5:54Speaker 1: articles linked. And what we have is how Mark Jrewy
- 5:56Speaker 1: predicts buck movement based on win by Emily Kanner. That's
- 5:59Speaker 1: a really fascinating peace. And then we have how to
- 6:01Speaker 1: deer haunt big tracks of public land from Tony Peterson.
- 6:04Speaker 1: If if you're um in the South and you've got
- 6:07Speaker 1: some big, big forest area, if you're in the West
- 6:11Speaker 1: you've got some open grasslands, that's gonna be relevant for you.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And then Mark Kenyon's article on how to set up
- 6:16Speaker 1: a ground blind that won't spook deer, which I think
- 6:19Speaker 1: is relevant to a lot of September hunters, especially if
- 6:21Speaker 1: you're guy nag some nine year olds? Absolutely man, Awesome,
- 6:26Speaker 1: all right, Tony, what I'm gonna talk to you next week.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Good luck to you and your nine year old daughter
- 6:29Speaker 1: in Wisconsin. And thanks for joining me. Awesome, thanks buddy,
- 6:35Speaker 1: all right and joining us on the line. Next is
- 6:37Speaker 1: Brian Christner from not Can Release in Kentucky. Now, Brian
- 6:40Speaker 1: in Kentucky, what would you say the buck activity is
- 6:42Speaker 1: ben lately on a scale of one to ten. On
- 6:45Speaker 1: a scale one to ten, I would say it was
- 6:47Speaker 1: an eight. Everyone concentrates, it seems like on bean fields
- 6:51Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. As far as getting
- 6:53Speaker 1: to the food source, you know, and the way our
- 6:56Speaker 1: property has been set up, we actually really and traded
- 7:00Speaker 1: more on the woods. Um. We put mineral out and
- 7:05Speaker 1: trying to catch those bucks moving from bedding um to
- 7:09Speaker 1: the food source are back and forth, how you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: mornings and evenings. We don't have the luxury of hunting
- 7:14Speaker 1: a massive property or properties only about two acres and
- 7:18Speaker 1: with you know, three of us hunting it, it's it's
- 7:21Speaker 1: kind of slim picking. But the buck activity this last
- 7:25Speaker 1: week when we were there was they were all bat
- 7:28Speaker 1: shirt up pretty good. Um. Still my father in law
- 7:31Speaker 1: had four year four bucks that shirt up together religiously
- 7:36Speaker 1: coming to the same areas. I too had a couple
- 7:39Speaker 1: of my wife had, you know, a couple of hers
- 7:42Speaker 1: all bat shirt up still and the activity was it
- 7:45Speaker 1: was good, it was. It was really impressive in the woods.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Um as far as our bean fields and everything went,
- 7:52Speaker 1: not a lot. It was interesting. We we didn't see
- 7:55Speaker 1: a lot of action in the in the beans itself.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So how close to the bedding do you think you're
- 8:00Speaker 1: actually hunting right now? I would say we were within
- 8:03Speaker 1: a hundred two yards of the betting some thick areas
- 8:07Speaker 1: where then opened up to more hardwood areas. A lot
- 8:10Speaker 1: of the activity that we were getting on the beans
- 8:13Speaker 1: were one am two am, so we we were we
- 8:17Speaker 1: were saying within within a hundred yards of the betting.
- 8:20Speaker 1: That's where we we would catch these deer in the
- 8:22Speaker 1: evenings headed towards the beans, but by the time they
- 8:26Speaker 1: actually made their way down in the beans, it was
- 8:29Speaker 1: after dark eight o'clock a thirty and then they would
- 8:32Speaker 1: stay there and feed throughout the night. Do water sources
- 8:35Speaker 1: factory in the early season set ups at all? We
- 8:37Speaker 1: have a lot of water on the property. Actually we
- 8:39Speaker 1: have several creeks running through the property. So I'd say
- 8:43Speaker 1: that's one of the big pros for us. UM. We
- 8:47Speaker 1: don't we really don't have a lot of issues with water,
- 8:50Speaker 1: um then finding water, so we we set up along
- 8:52Speaker 1: creek bottoms. Um. We're Tiffany, my wife shot her buck
- 8:57Speaker 1: this last week. It was about eight yards from the creek.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Tell us more about that set up. When your wife
- 9:04Speaker 1: killed that buck on September five, so Spember five. She
- 9:08Speaker 1: we set that set up. Uh, this past summer in June,
- 9:11Speaker 1: we set that couple hang on in the middle of
- 9:14Speaker 1: the woods. Literally, it's we knew they were betting up
- 9:17Speaker 1: on the ridge and and the neighbor's property. The neighbor's
- 9:20Speaker 1: property is real thick. And what they would do. They
- 9:22Speaker 1: filtered down through this this hard woods and we were
- 9:25Speaker 1: in a pretty thick area we cleared, but we knew
- 9:28Speaker 1: they would come through there. And Uh again that area
- 9:32Speaker 1: had no no beans near it or anything. The closest
- 9:36Speaker 1: bean field would be a good Uh it's a nine
- 9:39Speaker 1: hundred yards um. But they always walked through these woods.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And we cleared an area, small area almost like we
- 9:45Speaker 1: call it an ambush area kind of. They come through there.
- 9:48Speaker 1: It was on a good deer deer path, and we
- 9:51Speaker 1: put our mineral out there, and it was kind of
- 9:54Speaker 1: a routine. These bucks were coming through and that second
- 9:57Speaker 1: morning she uh, but second that evening hunt that's on
- 10:01Speaker 1: that second day she ended up. You know, she had
- 10:04Speaker 1: had to choose, you know, she got to choose between
- 10:07Speaker 1: two really good bucks and uh ended up getting it done.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Then where are you running a lot of your trail
- 10:13Speaker 1: cameras right now? Mainly our woods just on paths. We
- 10:17Speaker 1: lease our properties. So the farmer made a perimeter road
- 10:20Speaker 1: around the property actually, so we actually took advantage of
- 10:24Speaker 1: that and we set up on these you know a road.
- 10:26Speaker 1: When I say that road, it's not like us nice
- 10:29Speaker 1: gravel road, and I think it's just play and he
- 10:32Speaker 1: just cleared it. Um, So we set up off these roads.
- 10:35Speaker 1: A lot of guys set up on the roads and
- 10:37Speaker 1: they you know, they're looking, you know, they want to
- 10:40Speaker 1: see the whole road and see what's coming down there.
- 10:42Speaker 1: We actually went about thirty yards back in and to
- 10:46Speaker 1: where these deer are coming right down the road and
- 10:49Speaker 1: you know they're not looking to their left, which the
- 10:51Speaker 1: reds are kind of looking down the main road too.
- 10:53Speaker 1: So that's where our main focus was this last trip
- 10:56Speaker 1: was the woods and where we set it up. Our
- 11:00Speaker 1: cameras was there. Don't get me wrong, we had our
- 11:02Speaker 1: cameras on the field and that did help. I mean
- 11:05Speaker 1: it showed us what was on the field. But again
- 11:08Speaker 1: it's it was so hard to pattern those deers, the
- 11:12Speaker 1: deer on the beans because it was in the middle
- 11:14Speaker 1: of the night half the time. Um so yeah, I'd
- 11:18Speaker 1: say our our craft cameras were definitely running in the
- 11:20Speaker 1: woods of the time. Going forward, then it is next
- 11:24Speaker 1: speak or so, what do you think that bucket QVT
- 11:26Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 11:27Speaker 1: ten In Kentucky opening weeks always great. Again, I rated
- 11:32Speaker 1: it last an eight. I would say for our area
- 11:36Speaker 1: we're in Monroe County, which is like south central, I
- 11:39Speaker 1: would say it's more going to be like this seven, seven,
- 11:44Speaker 1: six or seven, just because of you know, with us
- 11:48Speaker 1: being you know an our area and the activity that
- 11:51Speaker 1: we talked to neighboring farms and neighbors and they know
- 11:54Speaker 1: we've seen a lot of Bachelord groups break off from
- 11:57Speaker 1: being in groups. But then it just said, I think
- 12:00Speaker 1: it all depends on where you're at. How much pressure
- 12:03Speaker 1: these deer get um. We had a lot of deer
- 12:05Speaker 1: that are that are hard horned already and still have
- 12:08Speaker 1: full velvet um, so I would say I'd say sorry, Arian,
- 12:13Speaker 1: Monroe County, Kentucky. Was would be a six for us
- 12:16Speaker 1: next week. The weather is supposed to be good, so
- 12:18Speaker 1: I just gotta get out there and try. All right, Brian,
- 12:21Speaker 1: congrats your wife Tiffany on that great buck. Good luck
- 12:23Speaker 1: with the rest of your season, and thanks for joining me.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I appreciate it joining us online. Next is David g
- 12:29Speaker 1: Rizzo in North Dakota from Tagg and Bregg now David
- 12:32Speaker 1: in North Dakota. What would you say the buck activity
- 12:34Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten. Honestly,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I would probably say the buck activity has been about
- 12:40Speaker 1: a three. UM. I think just coming out of this
- 12:43Speaker 1: new moon and the weather being very very staggned it
- 12:48Speaker 1: up there. They're they're in a drought or we're in
- 12:49Speaker 1: drought right now up here in Um. The weather it's
- 12:53Speaker 1: just been you know, up for seventies, low eighties, not
- 12:57Speaker 1: getting real cool at night. There's not much of a
- 13:00Speaker 1: weather change over the past week or so, and that's
- 13:03Speaker 1: made the hunting really tough. The mature bucks, for sure,
- 13:06Speaker 1: have been very nocturnal, not a lot of morning movement.
- 13:10Speaker 1: We kind of base where we're hunting on the morning
- 13:13Speaker 1: movement or at least the close to daylight movement in
- 13:16Speaker 1: the morning that we observe on cameras, and it just
- 13:19Speaker 1: really hasn't been there. So I'd say probably about a
- 13:22Speaker 1: three at the highest right now. Now, you just killed
- 13:25Speaker 1: a giant in North Dakota, big five by four that
- 13:28Speaker 1: you can see at team Tagging Briggs Instagram. David tell
- 13:32Speaker 1: us about that hunt and how that went down while
- 13:33Speaker 1: you were in that area and why that buck was
- 13:35Speaker 1: in that spot. You know what it was. It's kind
- 13:38Speaker 1: of crazy, well, something a little unusual for this time
- 13:41Speaker 1: of year. It was a buck that we had never
- 13:44Speaker 1: seen before. We've had cameras up here in North Dakota
- 13:46Speaker 1: for about a month or so and have not seen
- 13:49Speaker 1: this buck yet. But the corn up here, being that
- 13:53Speaker 1: there is a drought this year, is very short, so
- 13:56Speaker 1: a lot of the farmers are cutting it right now
- 13:58Speaker 1: for silage. And there was two different corn fields within
- 14:02Speaker 1: a mile of this particular spot that got cut um
- 14:05Speaker 1: within twenty four hours. And that this buck that I
- 14:09Speaker 1: shot showed off on camera at seven thirty in the
- 14:12Speaker 1: morning in daylight. Once again, that's kind of what we
- 14:15Speaker 1: bank our hunting efforts on up there, especially this time
- 14:19Speaker 1: of year, because normally when you see a buck in
- 14:22Speaker 1: daylight in the morning or close to daylight in the morning,
- 14:26Speaker 1: he's betting close. There's a good chance you get eyes
- 14:29Speaker 1: on him or get close to him in the afternoon,
- 14:31Speaker 1: and that's uh. You know, we're fortunate to be in
- 14:33Speaker 1: the right spot at the right time. Took advantage of
- 14:36Speaker 1: that opportunity and on a slow hunting week for us,
- 14:41Speaker 1: it paid off and we're going home with a buck
- 14:43Speaker 1: in the truck. Now. You mentioned that you've been running
- 14:45Speaker 1: trail cameras there for the last month. Where are those
- 14:48Speaker 1: trail cameras set up in the early season, so we're
- 14:51Speaker 1: set up, we try and get as close as we can.
- 14:54Speaker 1: You know, two known betting areas that we've um me
- 14:57Speaker 1: that we've experienced in the past, and putting them on
- 15:00Speaker 1: the edge of the beans. And I think that's one
- 15:02Speaker 1: of the other reasons where why the movement shifted so much,
- 15:06Speaker 1: because over the last week and a half that we've
- 15:09Speaker 1: been up here, the beans have gone from green to
- 15:12Speaker 1: defoliating very quickly just because of the dry weather, So
- 15:17Speaker 1: the bucks aren't feeding on the beams as much and
- 15:19Speaker 1: we've had to shift to three rows. We're actually seeing
- 15:22Speaker 1: a lot of scrapes top up, which is kind of unusual,
- 15:26Speaker 1: and we haven't seen that as much in the years
- 15:28Speaker 1: that we've been hunting up here in the past, at
- 15:30Speaker 1: least this time of year. So we've moved our trail
- 15:34Speaker 1: cameras to scrapes. That's worked out to get box on camera,
- 15:39Speaker 1: but still the daylight activity has been few and far between.
- 15:43Speaker 1: You mentioned a few times that it's very dry right
- 15:45Speaker 1: now in the area. Has been in the drought. Has
- 15:47Speaker 1: water factored Indian evir setups then this year, Oh absolutely,
- 15:52Speaker 1: you almost you have to be near water because the bucks,
- 15:57Speaker 1: if they're not betting in the corn, they're betting in
- 15:59Speaker 1: the attails lose close to water, and a lot of
- 16:02Speaker 1: the slews that normally hold water, that are maybe like
- 16:06Speaker 1: a quarter acre to an acre or even a couple acres,
- 16:10Speaker 1: are completely dried up. So the bigger lakes and cattails
- 16:15Speaker 1: lose are the only things that are holding water, and
- 16:18Speaker 1: it's it's kind of centralized the deer movement, which has
- 16:21Speaker 1: been nice. Um and it's and it's since we put
- 16:25Speaker 1: the trail cameras out there about a month ago, we
- 16:27Speaker 1: started getting a ton of pictures right off the bat
- 16:30Speaker 1: because of it, because we kind of centralized around the water. Um.
- 16:34Speaker 1: But you know, like I said, the daylight activity just
- 16:37Speaker 1: hadn't been there over the last week, and I think
- 16:39Speaker 1: the weather has played a big part in that. Now,
- 16:43Speaker 1: for as long as I have known you and your brother,
- 16:45Speaker 1: you guys have made trips to North Dakota in early
- 16:48Speaker 1: September in that time period. By now, have you picked
- 16:51Speaker 1: up on some historical patterns and how did those factory
- 16:53Speaker 1: into your setups when you come back each year. Yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 1: there's definitely those go to spots that we have. Like
- 17:00Speaker 1: I said, you got those so, I mean we call
- 17:03Speaker 1: them like buck palaces, the cat tails, slews, or the
- 17:06Speaker 1: specific betting areas that we focus on and anything that
- 17:13Speaker 1: revolves around cover. If beans meet the cover, it's you're
- 17:17Speaker 1: normally a good area. You add water into the mix
- 17:20Speaker 1: and you can almost guarantee that you're gonna have deer there.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But the biggest thing is trying to glass and find
- 17:26Speaker 1: the deer, because once you find, you know one to
- 17:30Speaker 1: a couple of different box Normally, you know, deer attract
- 17:34Speaker 1: deer um, so we centralized and focus on those areas,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and you know, we've definitely found a pattern, like I said,
- 17:41Speaker 1: where the beans, meat, to cover and water is. I mean,
- 17:45Speaker 1: those are dynamite spots for us to set up. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: when we're setting up trail cameras, you know, a couple
- 17:50Speaker 1: of weeks before the season, that's really where we focus.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And then based on that trail camera knowledge or the
- 17:58Speaker 1: or the information that we're getting, we kind of make
- 18:01Speaker 1: our our shifts accordingly from there going forward. Then in
- 18:04Speaker 1: this next week or so, what do you think that
- 18:06Speaker 1: Buck ACTV is going to be on a scale of
- 18:08Speaker 1: one to ten in North Dakota. Honestly, I would say
- 18:12Speaker 1: probably a four, because looking at the forecast, it's gonna
- 18:16Speaker 1: be in the eighties all week. I think the only
- 18:18Speaker 1: benefit right now is gonna be the last couple of
- 18:21Speaker 1: days of the Red Moon. I shot my buck on
- 18:24Speaker 1: the second day of the Red Moon. We got a
- 18:26Speaker 1: couple more days left. I think the early portion of
- 18:29Speaker 1: this week is going to be the best plunning of
- 18:31Speaker 1: the week. And there's rain coming in later this afternoon,
- 18:35Speaker 1: which in the past you get a rainstorm, and you've
- 18:39Speaker 1: got a couple of hours where that rainstorm moves out
- 18:42Speaker 1: in the afternoon and and the sun peeks back out
- 18:45Speaker 1: in the afternoon. Those are magical, magical days. The deer
- 18:49Speaker 1: want to get up, shake themselves off, dry off, and
- 18:52Speaker 1: they typically start feeding pretty early during that, you know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: during those specific days. So I think today is gonna
- 19:00Speaker 1: be the best day of the week. Um, But as
- 19:02Speaker 1: the week goes on, I I honestly think it's gonna
- 19:05Speaker 1: get just worse and worse hunting wise, because it's going
- 19:07Speaker 1: to go back to that stagnant weather, and you know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: the buck movement, especially the mature buck movement, is probably
- 19:14Speaker 1: gonna be subdued because of it. All Right, David, congrats
- 19:17Speaker 1: again on the great buck. Good luck with the rest
- 19:19Speaker 1: of your season, and thanks for joining me. Thanks Bence,
- 19:21Speaker 1: I appreciate it alright, and joining us on the line.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Next is Taylor Chamberlain from the Hunt Urban YouTube channel
- 19:28Speaker 1: in Virginia. Now Taylor in Virginia, what would you say
- 19:30Speaker 1: the buck activities been lately? On a scale of one
- 19:32Speaker 1: to ten skill one to ten, I'd put buck activity
- 19:36Speaker 1: at a solid seven to an eight. Um, I'm seeing
- 19:40Speaker 1: deer on their feet a ton right now. They're hitting
- 19:43Speaker 1: food sources. We've got the first bit of acorn trees,
- 19:48Speaker 1: white oaks that they're starting to drop um and that mass,
- 19:51Speaker 1: as soon as it hits the ground around here is
- 19:53Speaker 1: just getting gobbled up. So on top of that, we've
- 19:57Speaker 1: had a large weather system push for push through. We've
- 20:01Speaker 1: had traditionally much cooler temperatures than we normally get, so
- 20:05Speaker 1: the deer on their feet, they're on their feet longer
- 20:08Speaker 1: in the morning hours and also up much earlier in
- 20:12Speaker 1: the afternoons, and even seeing really good midday movement. The
- 20:15Speaker 1: last you know, five to eight days have just been
- 20:19Speaker 1: exceptional as far as deer movement, both in the field
- 20:22Speaker 1: and also on my cameras that I'm seeing, so uh,
- 20:25Speaker 1: it's been really really good. Besides acorns, what other food
- 20:29Speaker 1: sources are relevant for white tails in those urban environments, Well,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I mean deer around here in in any urban environment
- 20:36Speaker 1: where you have a larger population of white tail um,
- 20:40Speaker 1: they tend to be, you know, eating at any opportunity
- 20:44Speaker 1: they can. We see a lot of deer eating shrubs, plants,
- 20:49Speaker 1: hostas anything that's palatable for them, which is why when
- 20:53Speaker 1: the acorns start dropping, or maybe some symmeon trees. Any
- 20:57Speaker 1: any tree or plant that has off mast on it.
- 21:01Speaker 1: As soon as that's ripe and hitting the ground, the
- 21:03Speaker 1: deer just gonna crush it. The only thing that they
- 21:06Speaker 1: don't like, or you know, the red oaks, which they
- 21:09Speaker 1: will eat. I kind of equate those to like taco
- 21:11Speaker 1: bell at two o'clock in the morning right now, where um,
- 21:15Speaker 1: it's something that's palatable, but you're gonna regret it later.
- 21:19Speaker 1: And the deer with all those tannins in it, I
- 21:21Speaker 1: think it as upsets their stomach for a little bit.
- 21:23Speaker 1: That's why they tend to find those white oaks, orny
- 21:26Speaker 1: type of apple tree for cemetree more palatable. You mentioned
- 21:30Speaker 1: that your trail cameras have been lighting up lately. Where
- 21:32Speaker 1: are your trail cameras running in early September? So early September,
- 21:36Speaker 1: they're all on food sources. Uh, any oak tree in
- 21:40Speaker 1: the you can kind of tell it looks like turkeys
- 21:43Speaker 1: scratching on the leaves. Um pretty easy to spot the
- 21:47Speaker 1: trails that are coming in and out of those food areas,
- 21:50Speaker 1: So I like to have them rate where the trail
- 21:54Speaker 1: is kind of entering the feeding area. I don't like
- 21:57Speaker 1: to have a ton of just feeding pictures because I
- 22:01Speaker 1: just I don't need, you know, thtures of those feeding
- 22:05Speaker 1: on acorns. I want to see what's coming and going.
- 22:07Speaker 1: But I like to have a camera kind of parallel
- 22:10Speaker 1: to where that trail is entering rather than have a
- 22:13Speaker 1: picture of a dear head on because I find that
- 22:15Speaker 1: the bucks will like to enter on a slightly different
- 22:18Speaker 1: parallel trail from where those dose are coming into a
- 22:21Speaker 1: food source, and so if I can have a little
- 22:24Speaker 1: bit of topography there or just kind of take a
- 22:27Speaker 1: picture where I'm shooting across the parallel trails, that's where
- 22:31Speaker 1: I find the best trail camera locations to be on
- 22:34Speaker 1: those white oak flats. What's the status of bachelor groups
- 22:38Speaker 1: and bucks in Velvet right now in Virginia? I'd say
- 22:42Speaker 1: about eighty five bucks are no longer involved. Drive around
- 22:47Speaker 1: last night doing some scouting, I saw um multiple bachelor groups,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and I still have pictures on camera of baschular groups,
- 22:56Speaker 1: so I think there's just now getting ready to break up.
- 23:00Speaker 1: For the most part, I'd say the majority of bucks
- 23:02Speaker 1: are in bachelor groups, with the exception of a couple
- 23:04Speaker 1: of big mature dear that I've seen out on their own,
- 23:08Speaker 1: but at the same time last night and a couple
- 23:11Speaker 1: of batchelor groups, I saw um some big mature deer
- 23:14Speaker 1: in those groups. So I think that the majority of
- 23:17Speaker 1: deer are still in bachelor groups, but they're coming out
- 23:20Speaker 1: of velvet. Very few are still in velvet, and they
- 23:23Speaker 1: should be breaking off and going into a less traditional
- 23:26Speaker 1: summer feeding pattern any day now. Taylor, I know you
- 23:30Speaker 1: do almost all mobile running gun setups. How does your
- 23:34Speaker 1: gear list or your setups change in early season versus
- 23:37Speaker 1: October or November or December. Well, right now, I mean,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm I'm going in as light as possible, so I uh,
- 23:44Speaker 1: you know, trying to mitigate sweat, which for me, I'm
- 23:47Speaker 1: a big jade and I'm probably not in the best
- 23:49Speaker 1: shape I could be. UM, So you know, swet's gonna
- 23:52Speaker 1: happen for me. Um. But I'm going in light. I'm
- 23:55Speaker 1: normally running just a very lightweight top and lightweight pants.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I make sure, and I'm very sprayed down with permethron um.
- 24:03Speaker 1: As I'm sitting here giving you this interview, I'm picking
- 24:05Speaker 1: ticks off my arm and just cut out of the woods. Um.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But as I get it later into the season. I mean,
- 24:11Speaker 1: it's all about spending more time in the tree as
- 24:14Speaker 1: we get into later October early November. So right now
- 24:17Speaker 1: I'm going in light and as we get later in
- 24:20Speaker 1: the season, I'm just gonna bring more layers with me
- 24:23Speaker 1: and probably more snacks. Um. But you know, my kid
- 24:26Speaker 1: pretty much has everything in it, but I need from
- 24:28Speaker 1: day one with the exceptional layers and um, changing from
- 24:32Speaker 1: water to coffee as we get later in the season.
- 24:35Speaker 1: How about with your saddle or your sticks? Is anything
- 24:37Speaker 1: changed there in September? No? Uh, some my saddle just
- 24:42Speaker 1: in sticks are always the exact same unless I'm running
- 24:46Speaker 1: you know, some sort of prototype gear or whatever. But
- 24:49Speaker 1: my one sticks and I've been running the Phantom xl
- 24:52Speaker 1: UM now for pretty good while. And um, you know
- 24:57Speaker 1: that's just always ready to go in the back of
- 24:59Speaker 1: my car. Uh, just reading rock going forward. Then, in
- 25:03Speaker 1: this next week or so, what do you think that
- 25:04Speaker 1: buck ATV is going to be on a scale of
- 25:06Speaker 1: one to ten in Virginia. I think it's probably gonna
- 25:10Speaker 1: slow down, give it like a four compared to what
- 25:13Speaker 1: it is now. Um. I've been using some different predictability apps, UM,
- 25:18Speaker 1: one of them being called spartan forge, which predicts kind
- 25:21Speaker 1: of wind, deer moving and where um. And what they've
- 25:24Speaker 1: determined and discovered is that like deer will feed for
- 25:27Speaker 1: a period until they're satiated, and once they're satiated, they're
- 25:30Speaker 1: not going to have these long feeding spurts. And so
- 25:33Speaker 1: I think we're at the end of that major feeding
- 25:37Speaker 1: spurt that we just saw correlated with the cooler weather,
- 25:39Speaker 1: and as it gets warmer than deer gonna kind of
- 25:42Speaker 1: lay low until the next feeding event occurs. All right, Taylor,
- 25:46Speaker 1: good luck with the rescue season. Great intail, thanks for
- 25:49Speaker 1: joining me. Thanks Messor, good luck everybody out there all
- 25:52Speaker 1: right and joining us on theline. Last is Jake Hipschman
- 25:55Speaker 1: from the hunting public in Wyoming. Now, Jake in Wyoming,
- 25:58Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activity is been Leley
- 26:00Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, I would say, uh,
- 26:04Speaker 1: seven or eight. The what the weather when we were
- 26:07Speaker 1: out there, it was a little warmer, But I mean,
- 26:11Speaker 1: the nice thing about hunting those western states that that
- 26:14Speaker 1: we like is you can always just get up to
- 26:16Speaker 1: a vantage point. It seems like where you can get
- 26:18Speaker 1: somewhere and see a long ways and observe a bunch
- 26:20Speaker 1: of stuff, so the weather doesn't doesn't play as big
- 26:24Speaker 1: of a factor, doesn't seem like just because our style
- 26:27Speaker 1: of honey would like to get up on an elevated
- 26:30Speaker 1: knob usually and watch over a bunch of ground and
- 26:32Speaker 1: just try to get eyes on the animals, especially in
- 26:34Speaker 1: the morning, and then hopefully if you do get eyes
- 26:38Speaker 1: on the animal, you can either try to make a
- 26:40Speaker 1: stalk throughout the day or just get somewhere close to
- 26:42Speaker 1: where you last seen him to set up in the afternoon.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And we have pretty good luck doing that, So, I mean,
- 26:48Speaker 1: I'd say it was a seven or eight. If the
- 26:50Speaker 1: weather would have been cooler, maybe would have had even
- 26:52Speaker 1: better luck. But as far as just getting eyes on ducks,
- 26:54Speaker 1: we had pretty good luck when we're out there. On
- 26:58Speaker 1: our website Wired haun we've had Mark Kenyon right in
- 27:01Speaker 1: the past about how one of his favorite features to hunt,
- 27:04Speaker 1: whether he's in Maine or Montana, our water crossings, because
- 27:08Speaker 1: they're so easy to to locate and they're great for
- 27:11Speaker 1: hunting year round. Tell me about hunting those jake and
- 27:14Speaker 1: what you like about those in September. Well, I'll start
- 27:17Speaker 1: with when we first got out there, it seemed like
- 27:20Speaker 1: it had been really dry, like the we we've done
- 27:22Speaker 1: end up hunting along this river, but it was more
- 27:26Speaker 1: of a creek. I mean, it was you could about
- 27:28Speaker 1: jump across in most places. Then we got a bunch
- 27:31Speaker 1: of rain, and uh, it seemed like the deer weren't
- 27:35Speaker 1: used to it, the river being as high as it
- 27:37Speaker 1: was after we got all that rain, I mean, the
- 27:38Speaker 1: river was twenty thirty yards wide. Rush it's pretty good.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And we got a video on the channel of of
- 27:44Speaker 1: all this. But basically we got up to one of
- 27:47Speaker 1: the two knobs that we ended up kind of focusing
- 27:49Speaker 1: in on in the morning, and there was three bucks
- 27:53Speaker 1: beating out on alfalfa field that we had seen about
- 27:56Speaker 1: on a couple of nights earlier. They were still out
- 27:58Speaker 1: there on that field during daylight, but as soon as
- 28:01Speaker 1: the sun popped up they pretty much just made a
- 28:03Speaker 1: beam mine for the same place that a bunch of
- 28:06Speaker 1: doughs acrossed earlier that morning. And every single year that
- 28:09Speaker 1: we saw throughout this bottom was going to this certain
- 28:13Speaker 1: spot in the river. This little oxboat across and it
- 28:16Speaker 1: was right down the river of a beaver dam, and
- 28:18Speaker 1: lust water must have been more shallow there, and all
- 28:21Speaker 1: the year knew this, So that morning we watched I
- 28:24Speaker 1: don't know, seven or eight deer cross on the same
- 28:27Speaker 1: exact trail, so we uh we figured they weren't very
- 28:31Speaker 1: far down in the river bottom, and uh we basically
- 28:35Speaker 1: just got as close as we could to the river
- 28:36Speaker 1: on that clock crossing. There wasn't much cover out there.
- 28:39Speaker 1: There was just a couple uh sage bushes right up
- 28:42Speaker 1: against the river that we tucked behind, and we ended
- 28:44Speaker 1: up having uh those same three bucks coming across just
- 28:47Speaker 1: out of range that afternoon. So, um, I don't know,
- 28:51Speaker 1: I think just the combination of observing and sitting back
- 28:55Speaker 1: and waiting and kind of waiting to find something that
- 28:59Speaker 1: we can focus in on. That's kind of what we
- 29:00Speaker 1: were waiting for for three, four or five days there.
- 29:03Speaker 1: And then we'd realized all these bucks after their server
- 29:06Speaker 1: came up, we're crossing on this one trail. So we
- 29:08Speaker 1: finally made our move, but we just, uh we didn't.
- 29:11Speaker 1: We weren't quite close enough to the trail. There was
- 29:13Speaker 1: basically two trails that we could see across the river,
- 29:15Speaker 1: and we picked the run one that was about ten
- 29:17Speaker 1: yards too far away from what we felt comfortable shooting
- 29:21Speaker 1: at him. So you mentioned that you were watching some
- 29:25Speaker 1: books on al delfa, what other food sources relevant for
- 29:28Speaker 1: that hunting wyoming? There wasn't a lot of crop in
- 29:32Speaker 1: that area. That was about the only crop field that we,
- 29:35Speaker 1: uh we even noticed. It was mostly just um natural
- 29:40Speaker 1: brows ky stuff. Greg greg wisconum sunflowers, so I'm assuming
- 29:45Speaker 1: that's what they actually were. He he knows a lot
- 29:48Speaker 1: more about that stuff that I do. But just the
- 29:50Speaker 1: little yellow flowers. They're not the traditional sunflowers I'm used
- 29:54Speaker 1: to see in like road crop sunflowers Midwest, but they
- 29:58Speaker 1: were just like a smaller yellow hour And basically the
- 30:01Speaker 1: year we're betting down. There's a hunt that is on
- 30:05Speaker 1: the channel as well of where Ted and Greg stalked
- 30:08Speaker 1: a buck that was bettered down this stuff. But they're
- 30:10Speaker 1: betting in it just because I can stand up throughout
- 30:12Speaker 1: the day and drows on it too. There's just a
- 30:14Speaker 1: bunch of different uh plants that are growing within them too,
- 30:18Speaker 1: And there's footage of like those bucks standing up in
- 30:21Speaker 1: that stuff and feeding on it, but it's tall enough
- 30:23Speaker 1: where they feel like they're in cover two. I think
- 30:27Speaker 1: I know you boys do a lot of hunting from
- 30:29Speaker 1: the ground, how is it different hunting from the ground
- 30:32Speaker 1: for white tails and early September versus the rest of
- 30:34Speaker 1: the years, say October November. Oh boy, I mean you
- 30:38Speaker 1: just got a lot more cover this time of year.
- 30:40Speaker 1: So I mean, as far as getting shots, that might
- 30:43Speaker 1: make it a little tougher. Like in that video that
- 30:46Speaker 1: we have we're Ted and tedd and Greg got close
- 30:48Speaker 1: to that buck in those sunfowers. They were offen twenty
- 30:50Speaker 1: yards of them for I don't know, I think it's
- 30:53Speaker 1: two or three hours, but and he stood up a
- 30:56Speaker 1: couple of times, but everything in the vegetation was just
- 30:58Speaker 1: too thick where he couldn't get to sheep, like he
- 31:01Speaker 1: wasn't comfortable taking the shot. Um, seems like as everything
- 31:05Speaker 1: dies off, it's just a little bit easier everything everything, uh,
- 31:09Speaker 1: all the so it's stuff just gets lower to the
- 31:12Speaker 1: ground as it dies obviously, and just getting shots might
- 31:16Speaker 1: be a little bit easier. So you might have to
- 31:18Speaker 1: be a little bit more careful about where you're picking
- 31:21Speaker 1: the set up and making sure you're gonna be able
- 31:23Speaker 1: to get a shot when the year actually come in.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Going forward, then in the next week or so, what
- 31:28Speaker 1: do you think that buck ATV is going to be
- 31:29Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. In Wyoming, it
- 31:32Speaker 1: didn't seem like I guess we got there. The bucks
- 31:35Speaker 1: were interacting with each other here as much, which especially
- 31:39Speaker 1: when they're bachelored up, like it seems like they're always
- 31:41Speaker 1: seeing them early season, especially uh, just knock heads together,
- 31:45Speaker 1: you know, and do a little sparring and just kind
- 31:47Speaker 1: of start to set that packing order. And as as
- 31:50Speaker 1: we were leaving Wyoming, it seemed like there was a
- 31:54Speaker 1: lot more of that going on, where like bucks were
- 31:56Speaker 1: starting to lose their velvet, they're starting to spar a
- 31:58Speaker 1: little bit more, and bachelor groups are starting to break up.
- 32:01Speaker 1: It seemed like like even in some of that footage,
- 32:04Speaker 1: like there's but there's two nice bucks that came in.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Of the three, one of them was hard horned and
- 32:09Speaker 1: the other one was in velvet. Still on that hard
- 32:12Speaker 1: horn one kind of nudged the velvet eight pointer around,
- 32:15Speaker 1: even though I mean the other buckland it looks like
- 32:19Speaker 1: he's bigger body, maybe a year older deer, and I mean,
- 32:21Speaker 1: you have bigger antlers, but that that hardharmed, smaller antler
- 32:25Speaker 1: buck kind of nudged him around. I don't know if
- 32:27Speaker 1: it's just because the uh at losson velvet yeah, or
- 32:30Speaker 1: or you have loss of velvet yeah already, but I'd
- 32:34Speaker 1: say there's gonna be a lot more of that going
- 32:35Speaker 1: on as they kind of start to set the tecting
- 32:37Speaker 1: order throughout that river bottom there. If you want to
- 32:41Speaker 1: see the haunted Jake has been talking about, you can
- 32:43Speaker 1: see it right now on the Hunting Public's YouTube channel. Uh.
- 32:46Speaker 1: The one video is titled Deer hunting a beaver Dam.
- 32:48Speaker 1: The other is big Wyoming public Land White Tails. Thank
- 32:51Speaker 1: you for joining me, Jake, and good luck with the
- 32:53Speaker 1: rest of your fall. And that concludes this week's episode
- 32:58Speaker 1: of rut Fresh Radio. Thanks to Brian, David Taylor and
- 33:01Speaker 1: Jake for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Remember those reading materials can be found in the description
- 33:06Speaker 1: of the website about how Mark Jory predicts buck movement
- 33:08Speaker 1: based on when Tony Peterson says you should be deer
- 33:12Speaker 1: haunting big tracks of public land, and how to set
- 33:14Speaker 1: up a ground blind that won't spook to your punt. Kenyon,
- 33:17Speaker 1: I will talk to you next week and until then,
- 33:20Speaker 1: stay wired to Hunt.
