- 0:09Speaker 2: Now back to Mark Simon on wor Hey, let's take
- 0:15Speaker 2: some calls. Eight hundred three two one zero seven ten
- 0:19Speaker 2: is the number. Oh look at this calling. Sal from Patsy's,
- 0:22Speaker 2: the legendary restaurant West fifty sixth Streets. Sal from Patsy's.
- 0:25Speaker 2: How you doing?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Hey, good morning buddy, How are you good?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Drive it into work? I can tell you could.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Tell you, oh yeah, thank you. But it was so funny.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You're talking about Don Rickles. There's so many great stories.
- 0:40Speaker 1: He was so funny. I couldn't even take his order.
- 0:42Speaker 1: He was making me laugh so much. And like you said,
- 0:45Speaker 1: he was the only way he'll get away, the only
- 0:47Speaker 1: one who could get away with it and say these
- 0:49Speaker 1: things in a way that you just had to crack up.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You was so was so funny and and certainly the
- 0:55Speaker 1: truth in that interview you had with him there he
- 0:57Speaker 1: was the only one who could get away with stuff
- 0:59Speaker 1: with Sinatra, not only get away with it, but that
- 1:02Speaker 1: he loved him. And I think the most famous story
- 1:05Speaker 1: and this clip you could watch it on the Johnny
- 1:07Speaker 1: Closson Show, Frank to tell us the story about that
- 1:12Speaker 1: when Don Rickles was there, and he did this twice
- 1:14Speaker 1: to him. He did it once at Patches Italian restaurants
- 1:16Speaker 1: and he didn't and on the West Coast Italian restaurant.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I think, wait, this is this famous story where he
- 1:23Speaker 2: begs Frank come over the table sail out to me
- 1:25Speaker 2: because I'm with this girl. I'm trying to impress her.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So Sinatra was trying to impress the girl. Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, So the later Sinatra walks overs, Hello, Don, how
- 1:33Speaker 2: are you Frank? Can't you see a meeting? What are
- 1:35Speaker 2: you bothering me for? Sir? Every time those two guys
- 1:38Speaker 2: told the story, I've noticed it's not on the air
- 1:41Speaker 2: but off here. It was always a different restaurant, it
- 1:43Speaker 2: was always a different city. So that's why I thought
- 1:45Speaker 2: it was a myth. But you actually saw it.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yes, he actually did it at the restaurant he was
- 1:53Speaker 1: and you know, Sinatra was upstairs and he finished his
- 1:56Speaker 1: express all stuff, and he, you know, he fulfilled his
- 1:59Speaker 1: promise to come down because Don Rickles was with the
- 2:02Speaker 1: woman who's trying to impress her. That he knew Frank
- 2:04Speaker 1: sinatra'ee can't you see I'm eating here? Leading alone?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Now, the young Don Rickles, before he was really famous,
- 2:14Speaker 2: although he was very successful nightclubs, was a young he's
- 2:17Speaker 2: kind of a very heavy he had a lot of
- 2:19Speaker 2: much heavier back then. He was always chasing women. He
- 2:22Speaker 2: was chasing after every woman's singer on the boat and
- 2:25Speaker 2: so uh. But and Rickles and his wife, they were
- 2:29Speaker 2: they were the nicest people. They were like not very
- 2:31Speaker 2: show busy. They were just kind of like regular tourists.
- 2:33Speaker 2: They were going to Broadway shows and all that stuff.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Regular old fashioned people. Just a great guy. And you
- 2:40Speaker 1: took about acting. I don't remember even he was in
- 2:42Speaker 1: some of the Twilight Zones. Do you remember that?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, before he got really famous, he was a
- 2:47Speaker 2: big nightclub star, and he did acting. He was in
- 2:50Speaker 2: Gomer Pyle, he was in the Munsters, he was in
- 2:52Speaker 2: the Twilight Zone.
- 2:53Speaker 1: He was it's so funny to watch him back then,
- 2:58Speaker 1: but he was. He was a good actor. I was
- 3:00Speaker 1: top of all of that and just just a great
- 3:03Speaker 1: I can't believe it would have been a hundred.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you got his picture on the wall, right, of.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Course, I got a picture of him eating. I take
- 3:10Speaker 1: a meat ball.
- 3:11Speaker 2: All right. So when you go to Patsy's, the great
- 3:13Speaker 2: Italian landmark restaurant, West fifty six between Broad Williams, don't
- 3:18Speaker 2: just rush in. When you walk in the door, stop
- 3:21Speaker 2: and look at all the pictures on the wall. They're
- 3:22Speaker 2: pretty amazing, all these famous customers. Well South, thanks for calling.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Oh, thank you, buddy, p Well you take care.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Let's go to Mike in Florida. Mike, how you doing.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Good morning, Mark, Yes, Mike, I had a comment about Wickls.
- 3:38Speaker 3: But a quick thing about leononuh not Leonon Jeffries a
- 3:42Speaker 3: queen Jeffries. Watching when he speaks his hands are moving
- 3:44Speaker 3: in a very awkward way is something they must have
- 3:47Speaker 3: all gone to Democrat how to speak school, because he
- 3:50Speaker 3: Gavin Newsom, they all move their hands and it doesn't
- 3:53Speaker 3: jibe with what they're saying.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Well exact.
- 3:56Speaker 2: In his defense, he is a robot, so blame the programmer,
- 3:59Speaker 2: whoever program that.
- 4:00Speaker 3: That's true. They need, they need dude coders. But getting
- 4:04Speaker 3: back to Rickles, I'm glad you guys mentioned what a
- 4:06Speaker 3: great actor he was. He you know, because he shows
- 4:08Speaker 3: up in all this early TV, the Andy Griffith Show
- 4:11Speaker 3: and uh and uh, you know, maybe Mayle and he
- 4:16Speaker 3: was great and Kelly's heroes Dick Van Dyke show. What's
- 4:21Speaker 3: that famous story where he was doing Cpo sharkey And
- 4:25Speaker 3: was it Carson who went over to give him a
- 4:27Speaker 3: hard time or was it the other way around?
- 4:29Speaker 2: No, he broke carson cigarette box the night before, so right, Johnny,
- 4:33Speaker 2: that's what it was. The whole thing was actually pretty
- 4:36Speaker 2: fake and rigged, but it was cute. But he said,
- 4:39Speaker 2: I've had this cigarette box for you since New York.
- 4:42Speaker 2: That's not true. It's a whole different cigarette box in
- 4:44Speaker 2: New York. But and Rickles knew they were common. It
- 4:47Speaker 2: was all priest.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Oh he did. That's I wish he wasn't in on
- 4:51Speaker 3: the joke. That would have been because he was so great.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I mean, he looked really looked like he was taking
- 4:55Speaker 3: aback when Carson confronted him.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Very good actor. As you said, you see today you
- 5:01Speaker 2: could just take a camera, handheld camera guy could follow
- 5:03Speaker 2: you across the hall, down the hall into another streat.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Back then you couldn't do that. They were big, heavy show.
- 5:08Speaker 3: That was a big production. And come to think of it,
- 5:10Speaker 3: you're right.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah, the cables wouldn't have reached they had to have it.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It all had to be all set up. But thanks
- 5:15Speaker 2: for calling, Mike. Great call. Let's go to Joe in Nutley,
- 5:18Speaker 2: New Jersey. Joe.
- 5:19Speaker 4: How you doing Yeah, Mark, how are you doing great? Yeah?
- 5:24Speaker 4: I just wanted to comment on Mick Jagger. I remember
- 5:27Speaker 4: back in twenty nineteen he stopped at a place at
- 5:31Speaker 4: TikTok Diner. Yeah, on his way to MetLife Stadium for
- 5:34Speaker 4: a show. And compared to what he's eating now at
- 5:37Speaker 4: this fancy cress rest French restaurant you mentioned, Yeah, he
- 5:42Speaker 4: had a tailor ham, egg and cheese sandwich with disco fries.
- 5:47Speaker 4: The city still have it on the menu. It's called
- 5:49Speaker 4: the Mick Jagger.
- 5:50Speaker 2: That's the old Micjagger. The old Mick Jagger was in
- 5:54Speaker 2: biker bars, he was downtown in clubs. He's now he's
- 5:56Speaker 2: at the French restaurant. He's at the ballet last night.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's the spring Gala, Ballet Gala. It's not the it's
- 6:03Speaker 2: not the old Mick Jagger.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Okay, sort of. I wonder as these rock stars age,
- 6:08Speaker 4: if they're going to go from like pilor ham cheese
- 6:11Speaker 4: and egg and to Prune Danish possibly.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so uh I don't want to mention names. Some
- 6:18Speaker 2: of these fine new restaurants. The biggest new French restaurants
- 6:21Speaker 2: in New York are the biggest new They make a
- 6:24Speaker 2: big point of going old school, very old fashioned, which
- 6:27Speaker 2: means they come to your table with a cart. Like
- 6:29Speaker 2: you order caesar salad, they make it right at your table.
- 6:32Speaker 2: That used to be a big thing in the fifties
- 6:34Speaker 2: and the Madman days, you know, making it table side.
- 6:37Speaker 2: They would have a big bowl and I would crack
- 6:39Speaker 2: the eggs and then cut up the lettuce, and then
- 6:42Speaker 2: right in front of you they'd make the caesar salad
- 6:44Speaker 2: from scratch. When they do it now, it is the
- 6:48Speaker 2: most annoying thing in the world. You got to sit there.
- 6:50Speaker 2: What are you supposed to have to watch the guy
- 6:51Speaker 2: for ten minutes? Make a season? Just make it in
- 6:53Speaker 2: the kitchen, just bring it out. And I don't want
- 6:56Speaker 2: the waiter of the captain making it. I want the
- 6:58Speaker 2: guy in the kitchen that makes a two thousand some
- 7:00Speaker 2: of them a week. He's better at it. It's it's
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's some of those old traditions. It's good they're gone. Hey,
- 7:06Speaker 2: when we come back to the Great Entertainment Reporter Roger Friedman.
- 7:09Speaker 2: We've got a lot to talk to him about. Coming
- 7:12Speaker 2: up next on seven to ten wor
