- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi, team. Welcome to the show.
- 0:24So glad you're here today. Recently, I was, I was in a
- 0:28coaching intensive. It was last week and I was
- 0:31working with a coach that I've been so excited to work with for
- 0:35probably over five years. I've been following him,
- 0:38learning from him from afar, but I've never directly been able to
- 0:41work with him. And in this cohort, listening to
- 0:44him coach people from all around the world, it was so very
- 0:47inspiring. And one of the things that he
- 0:50would ask people is this question, what do you want?
- 0:56And it strikes me that that's such a simple, seemingly obvious
- 0:58question to ask somebody, especially in the coaching
- 1:01world. It's a little cliche actually.
- 1:03But to watch him ask, it was amazing because to witness
- 1:08people try to answer this question, I mean, we're talking
- 1:12high performing coaches from all over the globe struggling to
- 1:16articulate what it is that they really want was absolutely mind
- 1:19blowing. Over and over again he asked
- 1:23this question. It was amazing to see how people
- 1:28would dance around the question. They would talk at length about
- 1:32a variety of other things. They would hem and Haw.
- 1:35But it was hard to get a sense of what the real answer was for
- 1:39people. What do you want?
- 1:42And again, it seems like a really straightforward question.
- 1:44Like, it would be easy to answer, especially for coaches
- 1:49who make it their career, to help people understand what it
- 1:52is that they want in their life. But listen, coaches are human
- 1:56too. And I've come to realize in the
- 1:59past 20 years of talking to people that it's actually really
- 2:02hard for people to clearly answer what it is that they
- 2:05want. There are a lot of reasons for
- 2:08that. I think one of the big reasons,
- 2:10especially for people who are in some kind of an industry where
- 2:14they are of service to other people, is that you get in the
- 2:17practice of giving, the practice of helping others, and you don't
- 2:21give yourself time and space to think about what it is that you
- 2:26actually want. You're thinking a lot about what
- 2:28others want, but you're very rarely tuned into what it is
- 2:31that you need, desire, want in your life.
- 2:35I also think that there's some shame or guilt or specific
- 2:39beliefs that can create resistance around the idea of
- 2:43wanting, wanting more than is here now.
- 2:47The idea of desire or wanting can have some stickiness to it,
- 2:52some negative connotation at times.
- 2:55I think we can acknowledge that many people have beliefs around
- 3:00deservedness or privilege or what's realistic.
- 3:05I also noticed that for anybody who has any sense of people
- 3:09pleasing in their life, if that's a part of their internal
- 3:12commentary, it can be challenging to speak out loud
- 3:16your desires or what it is that you truly want.
- 3:20All of these beliefs muddy the water a little bit and create
- 3:24some static for people when they think about wanting things.
- 3:28But there's tremendous value and knowing what it is that you want
- 3:31for your life. Not only that, but there's even
- 3:34more power in being able to speak it and take action toward
- 3:39it. I think we as humans are meant
- 3:42to be creators. I think that we are happiest and
- 3:46most fulfilled when we are creating things in our life, and
- 3:50that can be within relationships or work, whatever it might be.
- 3:54Creation is very high frequency. What I find is that so many
- 3:59people are just managing stuff in their life.
- 4:02They're managing their schedules, they're managing
- 4:04their kids, they're managing their relationships, they're
- 4:08managing their boss. It's just management,
- 4:10management. And we are often talking about
- 4:13responsibilities and obligations and the things that we have to
- 4:17do. And it can sometimes feel like
- 4:20we're trapped in this life that we've actually designed for
- 4:24ourselves. It's really interesting because
- 4:27I also asked this question to my coaching clients.
- 4:30What is it that you want in your life?
- 4:33And you'd be amazed at how many of these people, who many of
- 4:37them are entrepreneurs, they own businesses, they are creatives,
- 4:40they are high performing people. They can't answer the damn
- 4:44question, not clearly anyway. And often I have to push them to
- 4:50get out of the frame of what's realistic, logical or possible
- 4:54in this current circumstance. They are so used to managing
- 4:58what is here now, it's very hard for them to take the guardrails
- 5:01off their brains to think about what is it that I actually want
- 5:05or desire. But part of the process is to
- 5:09help them mine out what it is that they care about so that
- 5:12they can then determine what it is they want for their life.
- 5:15Because when they start to feel like they're back in the saddle
- 5:18in creative mode, all of a sudden their joy and their
- 5:22fulfillment and their happiness and their appreciation and all
- 5:25these high frequency emotions jump way up.
- 5:28It's so much less of the stress of life that they're telling the
- 5:32story of, but now they're telling the story of, I feel so
- 5:36purposeful. I get to create this.
- 5:38I'm so excited to go to work. And that's where the impact
- 5:41happens when you are in that space.
- 5:43Because you can imagine the person who is most impactful is
- 5:47not the one who is so stressed out in time scarcity, in lacking
- 5:53mode, and not able to think outside of what is currently
- 5:57there for them. The person who is most impactful
- 6:00is the one who's thinking outside the box, who's thinking
- 6:03creatively, who's thinking with curiosity and creativity and
- 6:08collaboration. That space is a very powerful
- 6:11space and that's where things get really exciting.
- 6:15There's an exercise called the 100 Things List, and it's
- 6:20literally a list of 100 things that you want in your life.
- 6:25Usually this is the way that the exercise goes.
- 6:28You write down the 1st 30 things with a lot of ease.
- 6:32They just flow out of you. No problem.
- 6:34I can write 30 things that I want.
- 6:36The 2nd 30 is a little harder. You have to stretch a little bit
- 6:39to come up with things that you want, things that you desire in
- 6:42your life. And then the last third of it is
- 6:45where it gets tough. Sometimes this takes people
- 6:49days, sometimes weeks to finish because this is where the list
- 6:53of things you want can get a little outrageous.
- 6:57This is where you have to kind of challenge your thinking and
- 7:01your beliefs about what is currently here.
- 7:05Take the guardrails off your brain, as I said, and think
- 7:08bigger. This is a space of creativity.
- 7:11This is digging below the everyday common beliefs that are
- 7:15bouncing around in our minds and our internal commentary and
- 7:18dialogue. This is where you have to
- 7:20challenge yourself, and it often has people having to set aside
- 7:24feelings or thoughts about what's realistic, about what's
- 7:27possible, and even what they think they deserve.
- 7:31But the reason this is so powerful is because people
- 7:34rarely think about this, and they very rarely think about it
- 7:36to this depth. And when you do this, it almost
- 7:41always reveals some important insight for you, something that
- 7:45unlocks you at a very deep level.
- 7:48At the very least, it allows you to get more clear so that you
- 7:51can articulate what it is that you might want for yourself or
- 7:55in your life. Think about this.
- 7:58When is the last time that you thought about this?
- 8:03When is the last time that you actually put pen to paper about
- 8:06this? When is the last time you had a
- 8:07conversation with your spouse or your partner about this
- 8:11something where you were declaring it out loud?
- 8:14For most people, it's not done very often.
- 8:19And this is my challenge to you is to practice this exercise
- 8:24this week. And remember, let's call this
- 8:26what it is. It is an exercise.
- 8:28Try to drop all the resistance that you feel about it.
- 8:32Try to suspend your beliefs about the social cultural
- 8:35constructs right now or the commentary around wanting and
- 8:39just play. Take the guard rails off.
- 8:42Allow yourself to think about what's possible.
- 8:46You can write anything that you want, possessions, states of
- 8:49being, feelings, things that you want for the world, specific
- 8:54environments, I mean truly anything is possible.
- 8:58You've had so many experiences in your life that have allowed
- 9:01you to sift and sort through what it is that you want and
- 9:04also what you don't want. So let yourself be free in your
- 9:08mind and write it down. Like I said, the first third of
- 9:12the list is easy, the second is a little harder, and the third
- 9:16is the most challenging. So don't be surprised by that.
- 9:19And on that note, if you're struggling at any point to think
- 9:22of what it is that you want, you can write a list of things that
- 9:25you don't want and work backwards.
- 9:27Try to uncover the hidden desire there.
- 9:31I know that I give you a challenge often.
- 9:34I know for all of you who listen to this show regularly, you can
- 9:37hear me giving a challenge almost every single episode.
- 9:40And that's part of the coaching practice is to get clients into
- 9:43action. And that's what I would love to
- 9:46see for you is for you to say, I accept this challenge and then
- 9:49actually do it. Actually write down the 100
- 9:52things list. Don't just turn this podcast off
- 9:55and go to the next podcast, but actually do this thing this week
- 9:59and see how it feels. Because like I said, every
- 10:02single time that I've put someone through this or that
- 10:04I've done this for myself, it has been a massive unlock for
- 10:08me. And I want that for you,
- 10:10especially this first month of the year where you are setting
- 10:14the stage for everything to come in 2026.
- 10:18So good luck. Take advantage of this.
- 10:21Think of this as a gift to yourself that you are giving
- 10:23yourself is 30 minutes to start writing this list of 100 things
- 10:29that you want in your life. I appreciate you.
